Spring has sprung… The sun is shining and we’re thinking about gardening. We’ve teamed up with some enthusiastic locals who are part of Canton Community Gardens and some interested nearby residents to turn the city-side of our frontage into an edible landscape. We met up for the first time at the beginning of March in an all-day design workshop led by Michele Fitzsimmons of Edible Landscaping and had an inspirational time thinking creatively about how best to turn an unfinished space into something really special. There’s even the possibility of bees… The next meeting will be in early to mid April when Michele will talk us through three possible designs. You can find more details about Michele and what she does online at www.ediblelandscaping.co.uk and we’ll be keeping you in touch via our website at www.chaapter.org and our facebook fansite at www.facebook.com/chapterarts .

Something’s brewing… We’ve also teamed up with the wonderful people at VoG (the independent, microbrewery in the Vale of Glamorgan) and have begun the process of brewing our very own cask-conditioned real ale. You’ll be able to sample a pint or two of Chapter Old School in May at this year’s Maibock beer festival. At the moment we’re still working on the recipe…it’s a hard job but someone’s got to do it.

Help us help our neighbours… Since our relaunch last November we’re even busier than usual and this can put a lot of strain on our car parking facilities. On the back of this magazine there’s a map which shows where all the local, free car parks are and don’t forget that our overflow parking next door at Cardiff Community Learning Services is available after 6pm and at weekends. Harvey Street car park is often quiet and is only a couple of minutes walk away. Don’t forget we’ve got lots of bicycle racks on the frontage and we’re easy to get to by bus (numbers 17 and 18 from the city centre). Thanks, we really appreciate your help. Carol Jones, Chapter

Helen Frik: Difficult Preview • Blaenwelediad: Thu 1 April • 6-8pm • Iau 1 Ebrill Exhibition • Arddangosfa: Fri 2 April — Sun 9 May • Gwe 2 Ebrill — Sul 9 Mai

Everyone now and then heaves a sigh, coupled with the wish that things weren’t quite so difficult. But what if the difficulties vanished, if there were no complications, and no struggle in order to get where you wanted to be? Life would not be worth living, would it? ‘Difficult’ is universal: if there were no difficulty in passing electricity through a copper wire, there would be no heat or light; without death, life would not be possible. Traces of difficulty can be found in everyone’s history and because it is universal, everyone has personal experience of it. This paradox lies at the heart of Helen Frik’s exhibition and forms the basis of three new, large-scale commissions to be produced for their exhibition premiere in Wales. Helen Frik is a great observer and works with emotionally laden themes. Her work is autonomous and totally singular, while at the same time offering the recognisable. Many of Frik’s works have two ‘sides’ and are generally about human shortcomings: difficult relationships; the incapacity to communicate; feelings of loss and failure, for example. She collects and combines diverse materials and objects from her everyday experiences: second-hand goods, clothes, carpet, pieces of wood. The materials however, never function as they should. This is Frik’s first solo exhibition in a public gallery in the UK. The newly commissioned work is shown alongside a number of drawings from the Frik Collection. In addition, Helen has produced a limited edition print for sale during the exhibition (pictured). The prints are £150 (unframed) and are available from The Shop. Helen Frik was born in Worcester, UK and now lives and works in Amsterdam. She is represented by David Risley Gallery, Copenhagen. This exhibition is generously supported by Fonds BKVB.

Gallery open: Tue — Sat 10-8pm; Sun 2-8pm. Closed Mondays.

Assembly: Art in the Bar David Price Sat 17 April — Sun 6 June • Sad 17 Ebrill — Sul 6 Mehefin Abandoned by God to indulge in every whim we hurtle headlong towards catastrophe and destruction. No super hero Jesus or Mohammed can save us now. David Price’s current work incorporates the ancient art of copper plate etching, a slow and laborious process with remarkably detailed results. The intensity of his work draws upon a history of endurance and fear of the unknown, and reworks these into a narrative study of the human condition. David is exhibiting a selection of his recent etched prints and oil paintings on the walls of our Caffi Bar. David Price, born in Birmingham and now based in London, studied Fine Art at the University of Edinburgh, before completing an MA in painting at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and most recently an MA in printmaking at the Royal College of Art, London in 2009. Recent selections include the Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2009, an annual show dedicated to profiling the work of emerging artists at the start of their professional careers, launched at Cornerhouse, Manchester. David is Director of London Drawing and is Tutor at Tate Modern, specialising in drawing. www.davidmprice.com

European Premiere

New York City Players People Without History by Richard Maxwell Tue 6 + Wed 7 April • 8pm • Maw 6 + Mer 7 Ebrill “The ground rolls by. There is nothing so, but the contour and foot adjusting and then, step again. It’s work, and you get somewhere before you know it.” So says Alice near the opening of Richard Maxwell’s new play about war and loss and the dim time between the end of one and the reckoning with the other. This latest work by one of America’s most celebrated and acclaimed theatre companies known for their droll and convention-defying stagings brings to the stage a world set between Shakespeare’s Henry IV part 1 and Henry IV part 2. It is set on the borders of Wales and England in the aftermath of the Battle of Shrewsbury, in which the Lancastrian King, Henry, has defeated a rebel army. Cast includes Victoria Vazquez, Rafael Sanchez, Bob Feldman, Tom King, Alex Delinois, Jim Fletcher, Christopher Sullivan. Design by Lara Furniss. Directed by Brian Mendes. Co-produced by Project Arts Centre, Dublin. £12/£10/£8

“And dare I say it? — I have the feeling that this work comes closer than Shakespeare and certainly closer than any period costume movie, in making 21st-century audiences feel what it must have been like to be a foot soldier in the early 15th century.” Ben Brantley, The New York Times (photos: Michael Schmelling)

Gofasterstripe Richard Herring — The Hitler Moustache (live DVD Recording)

Fri 2 April • 7pm + 9.15pm • Gwe 2 Ebrill Has Adolf Hitler ruined that moustache for everyone? Is it possible to reclaim the toothbrush moustache for comedy? After all, Chaplin had it first. Richard Herring returns to Chapter to film his latest show, which finds out how people respond to this contentious face furniture in the 21st Century. Will they understand what he is doing, or just assume he's mentally ill or a fascist or both? Will the toothbrush ‘tache actually make him evil? Or might it take him from the tiny beer cellars he currently plays to stadium gigs with thousands of adoring fans chanting his name? This show examines iconography, the way we judge and are judged, the dangers of political apathy, the point where comedy and madness touch and the very ethics of such a comedy stunt. Is it worth Herring upsetting strangers, risking physical and psychological damage and ruining his parent's Golden Wedding photos for the sake of a stand up show? £10

From 2002-2007 he was Project and Site Manager at Chiswick House Gardens, working on the major Heritage Lottery Fund restoration project.

Name: Matt Beere Job title: Cinema Officer How long have you worked at Chapter? About 7 or 8 years; as each one passes by the first one gets harder to remember. What is your favourite thing about working at Chapter? There’s always an interesting conversation or challenging concept lurking behind every coffee cup. What’s the most memorable thing that’s happened to you at Chapter? Showing my own performance work is always memorable, and some of the friendships I have made through Chapter will stay with me forever. What was the last cultural thing you did? Took my kids to see The Princess and the Frog and then took them Bowling! What do you get up to outside of Chapter? I play football a couple of times a week, do a lot of stuff with my two children, watch films, read philosophy — the usual stuff… Tell us a secret… I put tape on the mirrors in my house so I don’t accidentally walk through into another dimension. Tell us a joke… Last week I went to a restaurant that serves “breakfast at any time.” So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance.

Crazy Heart Fri 26 March — Thu 8 April • Gwe 26 Mawrth — Iau 8 Ebrill USA/2009/112mins/15. Dir: Scott Cooper. With Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Keane.

2 Oscars

Crazy Heart finds Jeff Bridges in Oscar-winning form as Bad Blake, the broken-down, hard-living country music singer whose glory days are behind him. When he agrees to be interviewed by local journalist Jean Craddock, their growing attraction inspires him to put aside his self-destructive life playing bars and bowling alleys and he agrees to write songs for the reigning superstar of country, Tommy Sweet. However, we all know its not that simple... The joy in this film is in Bridges as the curmudgeonly but complex Blake as he tries to turn his life around, together with his performances of original songs by the great T-Bone Burnett (Cold Mountain, O Brother Where Art Thou, Walk The Line). The screening on Tue 6 April will be subtitled.

Adoration Fri 26 March — Thu 1 April • Gwe 26 Mawrth — Iau 1 Ebrill UK/France/2008/101mins/15. Dir: Atom Egoyan. With Devon Bostick, Rachel Blanchard, Scott Speedman.

Gaining awards and nominations and dividing critics, Atom Egoyan’s film tells the story of Simon, a high school student who decides to weave his own family history into a French-translation assignment. Claiming that his father was the terrorist who planted a bomb in the airline luggage of his pregnant girlfriend set for the Middle East, he underestimates the impact it will have when he invites an internet audience into the scenario. Inspired by a true life event, this tale is populated with rich, complex characters whose emotional lives exist within a wider, debated political framework of nationalism, religion and prejudice.

In the hope of putting her fears to rest, she hires a young woman, Chloe, to test his fidelity. However, while Catherine sees this initially as a straight business transaction, Chloe’s motives are a little less clear and her erotic encounters with the charismatic David begin to put Catherine’s family life at risk.

The Wolfman Mon 29 March — Thu 1 April • Llun 29 Mawrth — Iau 1 Ebrill USA/2010/102mins/15. Dir: Joe Johnston. With Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Hugo Weaving.

Inspired by the classic Universal film, The Wolfman brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Lawrence Talbot is a haunted nobleman whose childhood ended the night his mother died. Lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes amidst a string of gruesome murders, Talbot is reunited with his estranged father and sets out to find his brother, while trying to protect the woman he has grown to love. The real fun is in the telling of this tale of bloodlust and tortured souls, as Del Toro, on beastly form, discovers his own horrifying destiny. The screening on Mon 29 March is followed by a panel discussion. Experts from the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and genomics, Cardiff University discuss the rise of gothic in film and the historical treatment of madness and human enhancement.

Oil City Confidential Fri 2 — Sun 4 April • Gwe 2 — Sul 4 Ebrill UK/2009/104 mins/15. Dir: Julian Temple. With Lee Brilleaux, Wilko Johnson, John B Sparkes, John Martin, Chris Fenwick.

The last film in Julian Temple’s trilogy on British music of the 1970s — following The Filth & The Fury (Sex Pistols) and The Future Is Unwritten (Joe Strummer). Temple utilises the music of Dr Feelgood as a prism through which to examine the social and cultural conditions of the times in an irreverent and anarchic style. This noir-esque documentary looks at the four men in cheap suits who crashed out of Convey Island on the ‘Thames Delta’ and played a key role in creating the conditions for the cultural explosion of the 70s, forming a bridge between The Kinks and The Sex Pistols.

Bad Film Club: Night Train to Terror Sun 4 April • Sul 4 Ebrill USA/1985/98 mins/18. Dir: John Carr, Phillip Marshak.

Nicko and Joe bring their inimitable, live and irreverent DVD-style commentary to another exhibit from their collection of terrible movies. This bizarre and confusing movie sees Satan and God on a train discussing the fate of three people whose stories are told in a series of strange vignettes. One of the stops involves an insane asylum with some very interesting ideas on how to treat patients... Dare you travel with them?

The Headless Woman Fri 2 — Thu 8 April • Gwe 2 — Iau 8 Ebrill Argentina/2008/87mins/subtitled/12A. Dir:Lucrecia Martel. With: Inés Efron, Claudia Cantero, María Onetto.

Firmly established as one of world cinema’s most distinctive voices, Martel’s atmospheric third film (after La Cienaga, The Holy Girl) centres on Veronica who, briefly distracted while driving along a dirt back road, hits what she thinks was a dog. But later she sees a small handprint on the side of her car. Martel takes us effortlessly inside Veronica’s head as, beset by uncertainty, her life starts to unravel. A haunting film about self-preservation that reflects on our collective amnesia about the way the lives of the privileged are based on the suffering of others.

“One of the films of the year” — Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

My Father, My Lord Fri 2 — Thu 8 April • Gwe 2 — Iau 8 Ebrill Israel/2007/72mins/subtitled/PG. Dir: David Volach. With Assi Dayan, llan Griff, Sharon Hacohen.

Menahem is of an age where he absorbs the world around him as a place of wonder, following as his loving father leads him along the straight and narrow path that must be pursued by men of faith. However, on a summer vacation to the Dead Sea, events unfold that put to the test Rabbi Abraham’s faith in the protection due to him through his devotion to the Torah and Jewish Law. First time director Volach, formerly from the strict and closed branch of the Haredic sect, draws on his experience to tell this intense and humanistic tale of discovery, family and a faith shaken to its roots.

The Last Station Mon 5 —Thu 15 April • Llun 5 — Iau 15 Ebrill England/2009/112mins/15. Dir: Michael Hoffman. With Anne-Marie Duff, James McAvoy, Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, Paul Giamatti.

Set during the last year of Tolstoy’s life, this period literary tale focuses on the tensions between his wife of 48 years and his followers who are attracted by his doctrine of a spiritual life and a mystical Christian communism led by his main disciple, Chertkov. Believing that her husband plans to bequeath his entire literary inheritance to the Russian people, the Countess battles to stem the ever increasing influence his followers have on him while his young idealistic secretary, Valentin is caught between dedicating his life to the better future and falling in love for the first time. With a delicate balance of light and shade, drama and broad comedy, and with stellar performances from a first rate cast, this is a tender and passionate portrait of love and lifelong dedication.

With the richest 1% of Americans having more than the bottom 95% there’s no shortage of targets for Moore, including the ‘dead peasant insurance’ where companies insure their employees so they collect on death. Love him or hate him, Moore at least succeeds in getting the argument started.

The Queen of Spades Sun 11 — Wed 14 April • Sul 11 — Mer 14 Ebrill UK/1949/96mins/PG. Dir: Thorold Dickinson. With Anton Walbrook, Dame Edith Evans.

Not seen in British cinemas since is original release in 1949, this classic supernatural drama is set in an Imperial St Petersburg in the grip of gambling fever at the turn of the 19th Century. No card strikes more fear into the hearts of the soldiers than the evil Queen Of Spades and Captain Herman Suvorin, a lowly German engineer obsessed with making his fortune hears tell of the ancient Countess who sold her soul to the devil for the secret of success at cards. Evocative and sinister in equal turns, this is a lost gem from one of the most underrated of British Directors, Thorold Dickinson [Gaslight, High Command] and is championed by Martin Scorcese who has recorded a brief introduction to the film to be shown before each screening.

“An exotic, fascinating film.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Jan Svankmajer’s Alice

Alice In Wonderland

Fri 9 — Thu 15 April • Gwe 9 — Iau 15 Ebrill

Sun 4 + Tue 6 April • Sul 4 + Maw 6 Ebrill

Czech/1988/85mins/PG. Dir: Jan Svankmajer. With Kristyna Kohoutova.

1966/UK/72min/PG. Dir: Jonathan Miller. With Ann-Marie Mallik, Wilfred Brambell, Alan Bennett, Michael Gough

The Czech master of bizarre and twisted animation, Svankmajer brings his dark skills to Lewis Caroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland’. He mixes the live action of Alice as the sole human actor with a variety of stop-motion animated creatures from the complex White Rabbit to the incredibly simple Caterpillar [consisting of a sock, a couple of glass eyes and a pair of false teeth]. Treating the story quite faithfully, fans of the director won’t be surprised, or disappointed, to follow him on his numerous digressions (including living slabs of meat). This is not, necessarily, one for the kids.

Alice In Wonderland (2D) Fri 2 — Thu 8 April • Gwe 2 — Iau 8 Ebrill Fri 30 April — Mon 3 May • Gwe 30 Ebrill — Llun 3 Mai USA/2010/108mins/PG. Dir: Tim Burton. With Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter

Burton brings his talent for magical storytelling to this tale of 19-year-old Alice who returns to the world from her childhood adventure where she reunites with her old friends and learns of her true destiny: to end the Red Queen’s reign of terror.

“With this funny outrageous turn, Bonham Carter approaches national treasure status” The Telegraph

Dispensing with animal costumes in favour of actors in period garb, Miller’s BBC adaptation remains a curious trip down the rabbit hole, using Lewis Carroll’s nimble wordplay as a means of dissecting the Victorian upper-classes. The dreamlike atmosphere is haunting and unsettling, the cast stellar, and Dick Bush’s deep-focus cinematography, inspired by the photography of the era is impressive.

Dreamchild Sun 11 + Tue 13 April • Sul 11 + Maw 13 Ebrill UK/1985/95mins/PG. Dir: Gavin Miller. With Coral Browne, Ian Holm, Amelia Shankley

In 1932, Alice Liddell Hargreaves travelled to New York aged 80 to attend a celebration of the centenary of Charles Dodgson’s birth. Haunted by childhood events, Alice starts to recall the questionable attentions of the shy, stuttering Dodgson. Written by Dennis Potter, this is a dark and complex film with nightmarish creatures by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and a terrific turn from Amelia Shankley as the young Alice.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Fri 9 — Thu 22 April • Gwe 9 — Iau 22 Ebrill Sweden/2009/subtitled/152mins/18. Dir: Niels Arden Opley. With Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, Peter Andersson

When the head of the powerful Vanger dynasty employs a young journalist and a computer hacker to investigate the possible murder of his niece, the pair link her disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from forty years ago and begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan and the duo soon discover just how far the close knit, dysfunctional family are prepared to go to protect themselves. As a celebrated author drawing on the rich history of western crime novels and writers, this is the much anticipated adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling, and award-winning Swedish thriller and the first instalment of his Millennium trilogy.

Under Great White Northern Lights Fri 16 — Sun 18 April • Gwe 16 — Sul 18 Ebrill USA/2010/92mins/ctba. Dir: Emmett Malloy

This is a visual and emotional feature length film documenting The White Stripes making their way through Canada and culminating with their 10th anniversary show in Nova Scotia. The film captures intimate moments of Jack and Meg both on and off stage as they travel through some of the most remote parts of the northern Yukon Territory. A captivating mix of striking live footage and poignant off-stage moments, this visually stirring and emotive film celebrates the band’s history, bringing them full circle in their career to a place reminiscent of how they first started out.

Exit Through the Gift Shop Fri 16 — Mon 19 April • Gwe 16 — Llun 19 Ebrill UK/2010/87mins/15. Dir: Banksy. With Banksy, Rhys Ifans, Shepard Fairey, Space Invader

“A film about a man who tried to make a film about me” is how renowned British graffiti artist Banksy describes this feature. Banksy is used to fiercely guarding his identity to avoid prosecution, so it was perhaps no surprise when he refused to be filmed by an eccentric French shop owner named Thierry Guetta. Exit Through The Gift Shop traces Thierry’s attempts to capture the world of graffiti art in thrilling detail, following many of the most infamous figures at work in the streets. We trace Thierry’s efforts to locate and befriend Banksy only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner with spectacular results. A true story of low-level criminality, companionship and incompetence — or the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable — and failed.

“A supremely entertaining movie” The Times

Lourdes Fri 16 —Thu 22 April Gwe 16 — Iau 22 Ebrill Austria/France/Germany/ 2009/98mins/subtitled/U. Dir: Jessica Hausner. With Sylvie Testud, Lea Seydoux, Gilette Barbier.

Can miracles really happen? Even in Lourdes people have their doubts, but that doesn’t make the pilgrimage any less popular. With Sylvie Testud at her best as Christine, a lonely and disabled non-believer who makes the journey as a way to get out of her regular existence, Hausner’s film records everyday events in this religious tourist attraction and avoids real satire or melodrama to offer up a subtle study about hope, faith and the whimsical nature of life.

Grégoire Canvel is a charismatic film producer with everything a man could want. A wife he loves, a supportive if neglected family and a stimulating job discovering talented filmmakers and developing films that fit his conception of cinema — challenging and honest. However, his production company Moon Films is struggling and when the pressure becomes unbearable and he is driven to a desperate act, it is his wife who must find the strength to comb through the wreckage and carry on. This is unhurried and assured filmmaking which is as much about the state of independent cinema as it is about a family coping with loss.

Samson & Delilah

Fri 23 — Thu 29 April • Gwe 23 — Iau 29 Ebrill

Fri 23 — Thu 29 April • Gwe 23 — Iau 29 Ebrill

Italy/2009/120mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Luca Guadagnino. With Tilda Swinton, Flavio Parenti, Edoardo Gabbriellini.

Australia/2009/101 mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Warwick Thornton. With Rowan McNamara, Marissa Gibson, Mitjili Gibson.

Emma, the matriarch of a wealthy Milanese family, lives in a carefully ordered world where her duty towards her husband and children dominates her life, but a chance encounter ignites long repressed passions and sets her on a journey of sexual awakening with her son’s young business partner. Writer and Director Guadagnino has produced a stunningly beautiful film for the big screen, drawing a pitch perfect performance from past collaborator Swinton in an Italian speaking role with moments of achingly elegant cinematography from Yorick Le Saux [Ozon’s Swimming Pool].

This visually stunning love story centres on two self-destructive teenagers — petrol-sniffing Samson and the feisty Delilah — who live in a ramshackle village on a remote Aboriginal reserve. They communicate non-verbally, but deeply expressively, and it’s clear that they rely on each other to get by, particularly once they flee to Alice Springs and set up home under a bridge with a kindly alcoholic. The sparse storytelling has a brutal narrative simplicity and the texture of a parable. This tender portrait gives a rare glimpse into life on the edge of destitution with a ray of hope at the end of a difficult journey.

Dave Berry Memorial Event Fri 23 April • Gwe 23 Ebrill Join us for a celebration of the life and work of our dear friend and colleague Dave Berry who died earlier this year at the age of 66. The event starts at 2.30pm with a screening of Only Two Can Play. The evening session at 6.15pm includes personal contributions from his friends and colleagues and clips from some of Dave’s favourite films. All are welcome. “A moment in Dave’s company was something to treasure. Acerbic, fun, funny and generous, he was one of the great practitioners of journalism in Wales as well as one of its great characters. Our feelings for him went way beyond friendship and affection — but he was too self-effacing to recognise that. He’d interviewed everyone from the Rolling Stones to prime ministers. And of course he loved films. He was an original – and irreplaceable.” — Steve Groves, Western Mail.

+ Only Two Can Play Fri 23 April • 2.30pm • Gwe 23 Ebrill UK/1962/106 mins/PG. Dir: Sidney Gilliat. With Ken Griffith, Peter Sellers, Richard Attenborough.

Described by Dave Berry in his book Wales And Cinema: The First Hundred Years, this is “undoubtedly the funniest of all Welsh screen comedies, a coruscating, almost sardonic view of Welsh insularity and punctured male vanities.” Sellers is on great form as John Lewis, a bored librarian, henpecked at home until the wife of a local councillor sets her sights on him. We hope that this event will be introduced by Dave’s partner Gerhild Krebs, an archivist and film historian.

Behind the Scenes: Roughcollie Roughcollie are motion and interactive designers who live over the road from Chapter in Market House. Rob Cawdery explains a bit more about the company: “We design motion, that is, we animate design. We don’t really know what our job title means but we seem to be doing something different every day. Primarily we create branding, title sequences and graphics for television, but we also produce feature film titles and graphics for film trailers, visual effects for films and commercials, dynamic websites populated with games and animations and we also produce commercials and music videos. Motion design has a close relationship with film, music and art which makes Chapter an excellent place to be. We collaborate with some brilliantly creative people, many of whom also work here. We share a building with artists, film makers, designers, musicians and dance companies, which makes for a stimulating and often unusual environment. We’ve been here since 2004, we thought about leaving once but would have missed the chat and Erdinger too much so we’ve expanded into a second studio instead.” You can check out some of Roughcollie’s excellent work at www.roughcollie.tv

Fri 23 — Thu 29 April • Gwe 23 — Iau 29 Ebrill

Fri 30 April — Thu 6 May • Gwe 30 Ebrill — Iau 6 Mai

UK/2010/93mins/15. Dir: Tom Harper. With Thomas Turgoose, Holly Grainger.

USA/94 mins/2009/PG. Dir: Robert Kenner. With Michael Pollan, Eric Schlosser.

When David discovers that his best friend Emily is being forced to leave their caravan park home, he agrees to help her to run away. But after their plan starts to unravel, secrets come to light that transform his life in ways he never imagined. This is a promising debut from first time director Harper as he draws on writing talent from Skins and Shameless and Fish Tank’s cinematographer to create a dark exploration into media hysteria and the naivety of youth.

This eye-opening documentary, featuring Fast Food Nation’s Eric Schlosser, will convince you to never look at the food on your plate in the same way again. Our UK Chefs have recently been warning us of the pitfalls of modern meat farming but Food, Inc goes much further. It looks at how the international food industry puts profit before the safety of workers, the livelihood of the farmers, the environment and consumer health. Exploring the bigger-breasted chicken, the perfect pork chop, insecticide-resistant soybean and tomatoes that won’t go bad, this is one of the US’ highest grossing independent films of the year.

Yasujiro Ozu Late Spring

Sun 25 + Tue 27 April • Sul 25 + Maw 27 Ebrill

Japan/1949/108mins/subtitled/U. Dir: Yasujiro Ozu. With Chishu Ryu, Setsuko Hara, Haruko Sugimura.

Japan/1960/129mins/subtitled/PG. Dir: Yasujiro Ozu. With Setsuko Hara, Yoko Tsukasa, Mariko Okada, Shin Saburi, Chishu Ryu.

Set in Kamakura and nearby Tokyo, Late Spring is designed to suggest that traditional Japanese culture can happily co-exist with the new realities of the American occupation. The plot finds progressive-minded academic Somiya struggling to come to terms with the need to marry off his daughter Noriko, accomplished by making her think that he plans to remarry himself. This Japanese classic is achingly emotive and boasts superb performances.

“a remarkable, piercing film” Time Out

Made near the end of his life, Late Autumn is Ozu's bittersweet, half-comic drama about parenthood, difficult children and marriage prospects. Tokyo widow Akiko’s grown-up daughter Ayako seems determined to stay single rather than leave her mother all alone. However, three old college friends of Akiko’s husband take it on themselves to meddle and find a husband for Ayako and possibly, maybe, a husband for the still vibrant and once beloved by all, Akiko. Ozu has fun weaving the tale of misunderstandings caused by the child-like men and showing the echoes between their lives.

Following its single screening here last October, this is a welcome return for an important new film from one of China’s highest profile directors. Debut director, Tom Ford uses his strong eye for design to create this vivid and almost palpable portrait of 1960s LA. British college professor George Falconer is struggling to find meaning in his life after the tragic death of his partner Jim. Hoping to just make it through the day, a series of encounters cause him to reflect on his bliss-filled life with Jim and to consider whether or not he has a future. With superb supporting performances from Julianne Moore as his lovelorn and cocktail soaked best friend and Nicholas Hoult as a tentatively obsessive student, Colin Firth turns in one of his most sympathetic and persuasive performances to date, which also won him a BAFTA for Best Actor.

Fri 30 April – Thu 6 May • Gwe 30 Ebrill – Iau 6 Mai

Germany/2010/110mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: Hans-Christian Schmid. With Kerry Fox, Anamaria Marinca, Stephen Dillane.

USA/2010/102 mins/15. Dir: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa. With Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, Leslie Mann.

Director Hans-Christian Schmid (Requiem) has produced an intelligent political thriller inspired by the Serbian war crimes trials. Hannah Maynard is a prosecutor at the Tribunal in The Hague who manages to convince a young Bosnian to testify against an alleged war criminal. As diplomatic interests collide and threats escalate, Hannah is torn between her strong beliefs in the system and her loyalty towards the witness. Featuring excellent performances by Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days) and BAFTA-winner Stephen Dillane (The Hours, Savage Grace), Storm is a gripping film about personal and political integrity.

When a car accident causes family man Steven Russell to reassess his life, he realises he’s been living a lie and is in fact gay. Turning to conman tricks to fund his new, expensive lifestyle, he is sent to prison where he meets and falls in love with the titular Phillip Morris. Being generally sold as a broad comedy and written by the Bad Santa team, as in life, this true story is much darker, at times unsettling and ultimately more tender than appearances suggest with a Jim Carrey that’s more The Truman Show and less Pet Detective.

Café open: Mon — Sat 8.30am-9.30pm Sun 9.30am-9.30pm Breakfast: 9-11.30am Lunch: 11.30-3pm Main Menu: 12-9pm

Spring has (almost) certainly sprung so it may be time for you to venture onto our outdoor terrace — the perfect spot for an afternoon coffee or a light bite? Our café manager Lex will be mixing things up on the specials board with some lighter choices to put a spring (sorry) in your step. As ever, there is something for everyone — vegan, vegetarian or carnivore. How about a grilled salmon fillet with welsh leeks and samphire served with sautéed new potatoes and a lemon butter sauce? A bargain at £7.95. Or a stuffed red pepper topped with mozzarella served with herby couscous and fresh salad at £6.95. Bon appetit! Easter Sunday Special Offer — Sun 4 April Buy 2 main meals on Easter Sunday and get a bottle of house wine for just £7!

Drink • Yfed Kaltenberg Hell may sound like a film from our latest expressionist horror season but it’s actually a rather nice, crisp lager, new on draught this month. Its history can be dated back to 1516, when Duke Wilhelm IV passed the German Purity Laws. Kaltenberg Hell (4.1%) is brewed using only 4 natural ingredients — water, malt, hops and a unique Bavarian yeast. The word Hell, which also features in many of our bottled beers, is derived from the German word helles, which means bright and refers to the colour of these refreshing brews. Bar open: Sat 12pm-12am, Sun 12-10.30pm, Mon-Thu 12-11pm, Fri 12pm-12.30am. Free wireless internet is available in Caffi Bar Chapter.

Speaking of our unrivalled selection of bottled beers, I usually base my selection on the fancy picture on the front, but if you want to be a bit more choosy then ask one of our knowledgeable bar hands — they’ll be happy to offer a recommendation. One of the more recent additions to our fridge that you may want to sample is Lowenbrau Bartholomaus at 5%. Iechyd da!
