Welcome

Hello and welcome to your guide to all that’s happening here at Chapter during February. We’re delighted to host an exhibition of work by Rose Wylie, whose bold paintings inspired by irreverent popular culture have made her a firm favourite of the British art scene (p4-6). We’ll be taking a cool trip down memory lane with our season of films by the godfather of French New Wave, Jean-Luc Godard (p25), and also enjoying BAFTA nominees Spotlight (p22) Room (p19) The Hateful Eight (p23) and The Revenant (p19). Over in the Seligman Theatre Mr and Mrs Clark will be presenting Smash it Up (p11) their hit show which delighted audiences and critics alike at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe. February at Chapter has become synonymous with one thing above all else: From Now On (12-14 Feb, p14-15). Now in its third year, this festival of adventurous music returns, and brings with it international pop luminary, Julia Holter, surreal electronic trio Stealing Sheep and many more. Thanks for reading and see you soon!

Rose Wylie’s pictures are bold, occasionally chaotic, often unpredictable, and always fiercely independent, without being domineering. Wylie works directly on to large, unprimed, un-stretched canvases and her inspiration comes from many and varied sources, most of them popular and vernacular. The cut-out techniques of collage and the framing devices of film, cartoon strips and Renaissance panels inform her compositions and repeated motifs. Often working from memory, she distils her subjects into succinct observations, using text to give additional emphasis to her recollections. Wylie borrows from first-hand imagery of her everyday life as well as films, newspapers, magazines, and television allowing herself to follow

loosely associated trains of thought, often in the initial form of drawings on paper. The ensuing paintings are spontaneous but carefully considered: mixing up ideas and feelings from both external and personal worlds. Rose Wylie favours the particular, not the general; although subjects and meaning are important, the act of focused looking is even more so. Every image is rooted in a specific moment of attention, and while her work is contemporary in terms of its fragmentation and cultural references, it is also traditional in its commitment to the most fundamental aspects of picturemaking: drawing, colour, and texture.

Magda Archer, Bet Your Mum Works at McDonalds

chapter.org

ART IN THE BAR

Magda Archer #givemeeverythingandnothingbaby Until Sun 28 Feb I once saw a man in pressed cream chinos sitting in an airport departure lounge. He looked very smart, as if enroute to clinching an important account. He stood up at the announcement his gate was boarding, but on walking away, it turned out he had unknowingly sat upon an abandoned chocolate bar. There was a large, brown, melted skidmark down the back of his pants. He had no idea. It shouldn’t be funny, but it was. It was awful, but also hilarious. As a random event, it might have happened to anyone. I was glad it hadn’t happened to me. Someone had to take the fall. The universe will have a little giggle at our expense. If the moment had been captioned, it would have to be ‘SH*T HAPPENS’. Magda Archer is an artist with an eye for these moments of wry banality, from the sweetly melancholic to the needle-piercingly astute. Her paintings, screen prints and related merchandise are often paired with the typographic commentary of a high street seer: The Oracle of Argos, if you will.

‘Keep ya mouth shut, I want to stay in love with you’, pleads one cartoon puppy of another. ‘Bet your mother works at McDonalds’, in an exchange of playground insults. Or the human condition succinctly summarised in a single sentence… ‘Let’s Talk About Me’. For her new exhibition in the public spaces at Chapter, Archer looks at the pseudo friendships and false promises offered by the internet and social media; supposedly a means of greater connectivity, but actually an isolating and alienating amalgamation of other people’s baby photos. Extract from a text by Bren O’Callaghan, Exhibition Curator and Programme Manager for HOME Manchester. A full version of the text is available from Chapter or to download at www.chapter.org A selection of Magda Archer’s posters are available to purchase from the/Chapter’s box office. Prices start from just £5. For more information call 029 2030 4400 or email visual.arts@chapter.org

Introducing our new Head Barista, Dan Richards What do you enjoy most about being a barista? The instant satisfaction of seeing the response of customers who are enjoying their cup of coffee, and being able to provide them with something they will really enjoy. Where did you learn your craft? I spent two years working in Australia and New Zealand. I chose to go to those countries because of their great reputation in the coffee industry. They’re very keen on espresso based drinks and have developed an exciting café culture, which has moved over here to the UK in recent years. I moved back to the UK four years ago and have worked as a barista in Cardiff and London since then. What are your plans here at Chapter? I have an exciting challenge ahead — working with a large, dynamic team, and our coffee roaster, Welsh Coffee Company, to ensure that we’re always delivering a great service.

Mr and Mrs Clark Smash It Up Wed 17 Feb 8pm (preview performance) Thu 18 Feb 8pm (press night) Fri 19 — Sat 27 8pm (No performances on Sun/Mon/Tue) In your hometown a symbol of equality, justice and freedom has been destroyed; a piece of art that stood for everything you know to be right. Its destruction makes way for a privately guarded shopping centre. What do you do? If you are Mr and Mrs Clark you start a campaign. In collaboration with the Newport art activists Bosch and with the guidance of the artist Andre Stitt, Mr and Mrs Clark developed a timeline of performances in public spaces that now make up a theatre show. They call it Smash It Up. Short-listed for the Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award at the Edinburgh Fringe during 2015, Smash It Up is a destructive plea for some cultural conservationism. It is a challenging demand for equality, for hope and for greater creative freedom and beyond all for an understanding and nurturing of the creative imagination.

The Danish Girl

The Revenant

Fri 22 Jan — Thu 4 Feb

Fri 29 Jan — Thu 11 Feb

UK/2016/120mins/15. Dir: Tom Hooper. With: Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander, Ben Whishaw.

USA/2016/151mins/15. Dir: Alejandro González Iñárritu. With: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson.

This is the remarkable tale of the lives of artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener as they navigate Lili’s ground-breaking journey as a transgender pioneer. With two incredible central performances, we begin to understand that Gerda’s portraits of Lili capture in art a truth that mirrors can’t reflect.

In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal by his friends. Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption.

The Bad Film Club is turning to the bad musical as it continues to celebrate 10 years of terrible cinema. Tonight is the turn of Xanadu. Inspiring the creation of the Golden Raspberry Awards and subsequently skating off with an embarrassment of Razzies in 1981, including worst director, worst actor (Michael Beck) and worst actress (Olivia Newton-John). Will roller-skates, stalking and terrible dancing help the ridiculous plot seem more plausible? It’s doubtful. Note: The will be a live commentary throughout the films and film titles can be subject to last minute change.

Fri 12 — Thu 25 Feb

Fri 19 — Thu 3 Mar

Italy/2015/118mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Paolo Sorrentino. With: Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz, Paul Dano, Jane Fonda.

USA/2015/124mins/15. Dir: Jay Roach. With: Bryan Cranston, Diane Lane, Helen Mirren, Michael Stuhlbarg, Louis CK.

Retired composer and conductor Fred Ballinger is living a life of dissolution in a Swiss health spa with his best friend, film director Mick, who is struggling to finish his latest film, and a gaggle of elegantly wasted guests. A request from the Queen brings his PA (and daughter) Lena to the hotel, which becomes a catalyst for questions about lost time and regret. Late career-best performances from the cast pair perfectly with Sorrentino’s effortless visual decadence.

Dalton Trumbo was the screenwriter of many Hollywood classics and also one of the Hollywood Ten, consigned to the margins due to their supposed (and actual) Communist leanings in Cold War America. A gregarious, eccentric and passionate man, he refused to be cowed by the indictment that blighted his career. A wry story of resilience in absurd and dangerous times, this is a timely reminder about the necessity of fighting for what you believe in. Audio descriptions and soft subtitles available, please see the calendar for details.

Fri 12 — Thu 25 Feb

Fri 12 — Thu 18 Feb

USA/2015/129mins/15. Dir: Tom McCarthy. With: Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Liev Schreiber.

Iceland/2015/93mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Grimur Hakonarson. With: Sigurður Sigurjónsson, Theodór Júlíusson.

The Boston Globe investigative journalism department headed by Walter ‘Robby’ Robinson, slowly unravel a systematic cover up of child abuse by the Catholic Church which pushes the team to breaking point. Dealing with a disturbing subject matter with a searching intensity and a rare sensitivity, this is the true story behind the scandal that is still unfolding 15 years later.

Gummi and Kiddi are brothers who live on neighbouring sheep farms in a remote Icelandic valley, but haven’t spoken to each other for forty years. Disease threatens the health and ancient lineage of their beloved rams and the brothers are forced to communicate. A naturalistic portrait of rural life which captures both the austere beauty of the country’s landscape and its people’s wry, deliciously mordant humour.

Audio descriptions and soft subtitles available, please see the calendar for details.

Bounty Hunter John “The Hangman” Ruth has taken murderer Daisy Domergue into custody on the way to justice in Red Rock, but a blizzard forces them into Minnie’s Haberdashery where they find not Minnie but a menagerie of other salubrious characters. Will all eight strangers survive the storm?

NT Live: As You Like It Thu 25 Feb UK/2016/240mins/12A. Dir: Polly Findlay. With: Rosalie Craig, Patrick Godfrey.

With her father the Duke banished and in exile, Rosalind and her cousin Celia leave their lives in court behind and journey into the Forest of Arden. There, released from convention, Rosalind experiences the liberating rush of transformation. Disguising herself as a boy, she embraces a different way of living and falls spectacularly in love.

NT Live Encore: Jane Eyre Sun 28 Feb Almost 170 years on, Charlotte Brontë’s story of the trailblazing Jane is as inspiring as ever. This bold and dynamic production uncovers one woman’s fight for freedom and fulfilment on her own terms. From her beginnings as a destitute orphan, Jane Eyre’s spirited heroine faces life’s obstacles head-on, surviving poverty, injustice and the discovery of bitter betrayal before taking the ultimate decision to follow her heart. This acclaimed re-imagining of Brontë’s masterpiece was first staged by Bristol Old Vic last year, when the story was performed over two evenings. Director Sally Cookson now brings her celebrated production to the National, presented as a single, exhilarating performance. £10

A Syrian Love Story Fri 12 — Tue 16 Feb UK/2015/76mins/12A. Dir: Sean McAllister.

When filmmaker Sean McAllister first meets their family in 2009, Raghda is back in prison leaving Amer to look after their 4 boys alone; but as the ‘Arab Spring’ sweeps the region, the family’s fate shifts irrevocably. Filmed over 5 years, the film charts their incredible odyssey to political freedom. For Raghda and Amer, it is a journey of hope, dreams and despair: for the revolution, their homeland and each other. Screenwriter Paul Javal’s marriage to his wife Camille disintegrates during movie production as she spends time with the American producer. A discussion on the layered conflicts between art and business as well as an autobiographical reflection of Godard’s infamous marriage to Anna Karina, this is a sharp Gallic satire on the film industry.

Sun 28 Feb + Tue 1 Mar

A U.S. secret agent is sent to the technocratic dictatorship of Alphaville where he must find a missing person and free the city from its tyrannical ruler.
