Welcome Croeso

Next Chapter News • Newyddion Chapter Nesaf Open to click, call or tweet Our car park has been resurfaced and re-lined, the pot-holes have been filled in and the flooding every time it rains is over (we hope). Or as one of our Twitter followers commented to the news of its reopening: “I speak for the whole of Cardiff when I say HOOORARRRR!” Talking about Twitter if you’re not a follower of ChapterTweets you’re definitely missing out. There’s a link from the homepage of our website at www.chapter.org or just search for @chaptertweets at www.twitter.com. You’ll find random thoughts, behind-thescenes gossip, photos, audio and video clips as well as the odd competition or two. Live tweet streams from the Cannes Film Festival and the BAFTA Cymru awards were big hits and we’re keen to do more. We’re heading rapidly towards the end of the build now and everything seems to be fitting into place (touch wood — our beautiful, recently-laid, oak floor that is). By the end of this double issue magazine the builders will

be gone (touch more wood in a slightly compulsive and neurotic manner) and we’ll be adding the final touches, checking everything works and generally getting ready for the most important part of this strange process…welcoming you in. The builders have started work on one of the main features of the redevelopment - a stunning light box that will span the whole of the main entrance area. It leads from our spacious theatre foyer (no more queuing up the stairs!) and we’ll use it to showcase specially commissioned artworks. Our interior design team is also planning not just the furniture scheme but how our new spaces will look and feel. We’re going all-out to avoid it being precious, corporate or for it to reek of shiny, designer minimalism. That’s not what we’re about and you’ve told us it’s not what you want. We want to keep the atmosphere you love, maybe lose the shabby and keep the chic.

Slightly vague information about the box office Sometime in the first couple of weeks of July we need to move our temporary box office, reception and shop while the builders work on the adjacent corridor. This only affects what’s going on during weekdays until 5pm and should only last for about five days. Our box office and reception will still be open — we’re just not entirely sure where yet — and of course you’ll still be able to buy tickets by phone or online at any time of day. Everything will remain as normal after 5pm. This magazine covers our programme for the next two months and things are moving rapidly, so to keep in touch with developments as they happen visit our website www.chapter.org or join us on Twitter or Facebook. Or just be greedy and do all three. Have a lovely summer and we hope to see you here soon.

Beyond Repair Dance Beside You To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the coal miners’ strikes, choreographer Matthew Howells presents a double bill of new work, including Beside You which draws inspiration from the women of the mines and those wives who kept households ticking over during the strikes. The piece looks at the worries of the women for both their husbands and children, and how they stood strong throughout the demonstrations. Beyond Repair is a new Cardiff–based dance company whose previous work, Cube with Magic Ribbons toured Wales as part of Welsh Independent Dance’s Dance Bytes. £10/£8/£6

“The high standard of contemporary technique and choreography within this young company cannot be denied.” — Cloud Dance Festival Y Llofft Y Llofft is a temporary performance space which we are using throughout the redevelopment of our facilities. It is situated above the temporary Caffi Bar Chapter. Events taking place in Y Llofft during the summer are Michael Groves, Beyond Repair Dance Company, Dance Double Bill, Ludus Ludius and My Prosthetic Soul. Dance Double Bill Peripheral Landscapes + Touched Developed in the ancient and changing landscapes of Carmarthenshire and Tornio and Ylitorno in Finland, Peripheral Landscapes is a duet performed by Eeva–Maria Mutka and Titta Court in collaboration with choreographer Gaby Agis, costume designer Helen Merrin and filmmaker Jeff Higley. From expansive coastal cliffs to dark wooded valleys and fast–flowing northern rivers, the dance gradually reveals the performers’ own histories within these places, and to each other. Touched is a duet performed by dancer/choreographer Gaby Agis and electric bass guitar player Douglas Hart, who fuse together their individual interpretations of dance and sound. Evoking the atmosphere of a live gig, the two performers appear to be in their own worlds: clashing, colliding, and rebounding through the performance space, before ultimately finding unity. £10/£8/£6

Tanja Råman traces Award–winning choreographer Tanja Råman, artist John Collingswood and musician Jon Ruddick join forces in this beautifully crafted, dark and thrilling performance. How do we determine what it is to become a memory or to be forgotten over time? Is it possible to choose a moment to preserve forever? To what extent are our memories manipulated by the way we wish to remember them? traces explores the notion of memory through highly athletic choreography, performed to a breathtaking and hypnotic electronic soundtrack. An ephemeral world of drawing, video projection and live photography captures fleeting traces of the choreography and sonic environment. £10/£8/£6

Behind the scenes at Chapter: John Hardy Music John Hardy is one of the many people that make Chapter the vibrant, artistic melting pot that it is. Wales’ leading film composer, his music composition and production company has been based here for many years. In May, John beat Doctor Who composer Murray Gold to win the BAFTA Cymru award for Best Original Music Soundtrack for the second year running, his fourth BAFTA prize. The score was for Welsh–language film Martha, Jac a Sianco. John also received an award nomination for the heart–warming road–trip movie Abraham’s Point, which has been praised as “a poetic, moving film” by Kevin McCloud (Grand Designs) and by Keeley Hawes (Spooks, Ashes to Ashes), who said “I absolutely adore the film, totally beautiful.” Other recent projects include the score for international award– winning drama Cwcw and Welsh gangster series Y Pris, now in its second series on S4C. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales’ recording of John’s colourful Blue Letters from Tanganyika has recently been released by Ffin Records. The piece has received airplay on BBC Radio 3 and Radio Wales and was described as “powerfully cinematic” by the South Wales Echo. Gallery Oriel Rupert Clamp, Wordmade flesh, installation in collaboration with Mark Vernon, 2000.

Assembly: Art in the Bar • Cynulliad: Celf yn y Bar Rupert Clamp — A Yard of Earth Fri 3 July — Sun 2 August • Gwe 3 Gorff — Sul 2 Awst Rupert Clamp has been working with contemporary and historical maps of Chapter and the locality to create a collage on the walls of our Caffi Bar. At first glance the maps, diagrams and other cartographical paraphernalia hint at locations associated with the exhibition space. However, on closer inspection the ideas connecting these various findings are far from clear. Several drawings and maps seem unrelated whilst the scale across the artwork remains uncertain or inconsistent. You are tempted to unravel the problem,

as though assembling clues or interpreting archaeological remains, all the while adding to the work by projecting onto it your own knowledge of the area, experiences and assumptions. As the merging of present and past is explored through the installation, tales of Victorian explorers’ routes emerge placing the building and the city’s rich past back onto a map of Cardiff. These journeys through time playfully challenge our own stories, whether they are fact or fiction.

Open • Ar Agor: Mon — Sun • 9am–11pm • Llun — Sul

Rupert Clamp graduated from the University of Derby in 1995, and in 2008 achieved a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and Training. He has exhibited across the UK in both solo and group exhibitions including Fighting Man at Vane, Newcastle. He is currently working as a creative consultant with Sheffield County Council to help research and develop their public art strategy. Clamp is based in Marsden, West Yorkshire. www.rupertclamp.com

Children’s Art Day — After School Club

Assembly: Art in the Bar Tim Freeman

Thu 9 July • Iau 9 Gorff Kicking off with a guided tour of Rupert Clamp’s exhibition (see p11) participants will be invited to create a large scale group map based on their memories of journeys. Artist Holly Davey will lead the activities which start in Caffi Bar Chapter at 3.45pm. To book a place please call The Shop on 029 2030 4400 or email gallery@chapter.org. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fri 7 Aug — Sun 6 Sept • Gwe 7 Awst — Sul 6 Medi Tim Freeman’s recent lens-based works reference the poetry and tragedy of ‘Romantic’ painters such as William Blake, Caspar David Friedrich and Constable and in doing so explore some of the contemporary debates surrounding the depiction of landscape in both photography and painting. The stunning black and white works in our Caffi Bar incorporate digital collage and printmaking to describe the multi-layered landscape around us. They begin with the documentation of Freeman’s walks, through which he develops a ‘sketchbook’ of images; open landscapes, shifting cloud patterns, tree formations, light on water. The images are built up and manipulated, layer upon layer to create a seamless landscape of contradictions: the urban and the rural; the fictitious and the real; the synthetic and the natural; the poetic gesture and the everyday. Born in Canada and raised in the Yorkshire Dales, Tim moved to Cardiff in 1998 to study an MA in Fine Art at UWIC. He was named Welsh Artist of the Year 2009.

Supported by Engage, the National Association for Gallery Education.

Children’s Competition Our extremely popular children’s art packs now include a regular competition to help young people to respond to the Art in the Bar programme and to create their own art. During July, to coincide with Rupert Clamp’s exhibition (see p11), we are asking children to design a wall plaque based on a memory they have of Chapter. The winning entry will be framed and put up in the building. Details of the competition can be found in the art packs or ask at The Shop.

Y Llofft (detail)

Study and Stay Residency Dan Clark in Y Llofft During August, Dan Clark is undertaking a 5-week residency in Y Llofft as part of our continued commitment to supporting recent graduates from art schools in South Wales. During his residency, Dan will use the specific site of Y Llofft — with its old school sinks, classroom blackboards and pitched roof — as a starting point for an intensive and focused period of professional development.

Dan is planning an open studio in September. See the next magazine for details. The Study and Stay Residency Programme hosted by Chapter Gallery is designed to support recent graduates in the first stages of their careers by providing a studio space, resources and curatorial support to encourage artists to develop their professional practice in Wales.

About the artist Dan Clark graduated from UWIC in 2008 and lives and works in Cardiff. In September 2008 he was invited to create an intervention in response to the changing face of Chapter during the redevelopment. Dan placed homemade ‘bombs’ in an unnerving daisy chain strung along a stairwell and corridor.

Everlasting Moments Fri 26 June — Thu 2 July Gwe 26 Mehefin — Iau 2 Gorff Denmark/Finland/Norway/Sweden/ Germany/131mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Jan Troell. With Maria Heiskanen.

Set at the beginning of the last century, this true-life inspired story examines a cultural, political and artistic crossroads through the intimate and at times brutalised life of a dedicated wife and mother who discovers she has an artistic gift looking through the lens of a camera. Supporting her family while her husband is at war, she takes haunting and pictures of weddings, parties and sometimes departed friends, finding her inner life is transformed through the freedom of creative expression. Swedish directorwriter-cinematographer, Jan Troell uses a gentle yarn-telling style to create a warm and intensely observant film.

Tyson Mon 29 June — Thu 2 July Llun 29 Mehefin — Iau 2 Gorff USA/2008/90mins/15. Dir: James Toback. With Mike Tyson.

“Dark, intimate, violent, comic, absurd, erotic, wounding, tragic and humane: the film ranges from Tyson’s earliest memories to his present dilemmas and understands him not only as an individual — the legendary and uniquely controversial international pugilistic icon — but also as a figure conjuring radical questions of race and class. Over an hour of original footage is structured around illustrative archival fight footage, interviews and photographs.” — From Cannes Film Festival, where this film was selected for Un Certain Regard.

A Girl Cut In Two (La fille coupee en deux) Fri 26 June — Thu 2 July Gwe 26 Mehefin — Iau 2 Gorff France/Germany/2009/114mins/Subtitled/15. Dir: Claude Chabrol. With Ludivine Sagnier, Benoit Magimel, Francois Berleand.

One time critic for Cahiers du Cinema and credited as being a founder of the ‘nouvelle vague’, Chabrol returns to his favourite themes of self–destruction and reserved perversity. This is the tale of Gabrielle, a bright young TV weather girl being courted by two very different men — Paul, the dandyish heir to a pharmaceutical fortune and Charles, a charming, womanising veteran author. Taking delight in the flaws of mankind, A Girl Cut In Two initially plays like a comedy but soon reveals a darker humour.

In his second appearance at Chapter this month (see Looking for Eric, p18), Eric Cantona offers more advice to us flailing Brits as he plays Thierry Grimandi, a celebrated auteur film-maker and self-appointed expert on the nature of love. Jed Winter (Hugh Bonneville), an ‘emotionally reserved’ journalist, is quick to dismiss Grimandi’s theories as pretentious nonsense, irrelevant to real people in real life relationships. However, when his long-term girlfriend Cheryl (Victoria Hamilton) refuses to marry him and forces him into couple counselling, Jed begins to realise that his own emotions aren’t as straightforward as he once believed.

Tue 30 June — Thu 2 July Maw 30 Mehefin — Iau 2 Gorff France/1959/99 mins/subtitled/PG. Dir: François Truffaut. With Jean–Pierre Léaud, Claire Maurier, Albert Rémy.

“Fifty years on from its unveiling at the Cannes Film Festival, Truffaut’s superb feature debut remains an influential landmark in the history of the cinema. Deeply moving yet devoid of maudlin sentimentality, the film centres on Antoine Doinel, a 13–year–old constantly in trouble — justifiably or otherwise — with his parents and teachers. Drifting into truancy and petty theft, he soon finds himself at odds with still less sympathetic figures of adult authority... Shot on the streets of Paris, the film exudes an authenticity and displays real compassion as it charts a seemingly inexorable progress towards delinquency.” — BFI.

In 1974, the most celebrated American R&B acts of the time came together with the most renowned musical groups of Southern Africa for a concert in Zaire. Boxing promoter Don King combined the event with ‘The Rumble In The Jungle’ epic fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. Soul Power brings together footage of the experiences and performances of such luminaries as James Brown, BB King, Bill Withers and Celia Cruz as they return to their musical heritage.

A Roma boy finds that his girlfriend’s parents do not like the colour of his skin; a teenage girl dates online; a couple prepare for their first child; and a piano teacher has an underwater fairytale adventure in his small flat. With occasional animated interludes, this film gives an intimate insight into the world lived in by blind people.

France/2009/95mins/subtitled/12A. Dir: Safy Nebbour. With Catherine Frot, Sandrine Bonnaire, Wladimir Yordanoff.

When Elsa Valentin spots a little girl at her son’s school who she believes is the daughter she lost in a hospital fire 6 years ago, she takes the only possible course of action she can — to get her back. Nebbour deftly handles this tense thriller, as Elsa’s initially inscrutable behaviour becomes increasingly disturbing, and when the child’s mother confronts Elsa this in turn brings deeply buried secrets to the surface.

UK/2002/106mins/18. Dir: Ken Loach. With Martin Compston, William Ruane, Annmarie Fulton.

A sensation at Cannes, Ken Loach’s charming film tells the story of Eric, a football-fanatic postman whose life is falling deeper and deeper into crisis. With the help of some marijuana borrowed from his wayward son, the famously philosophical Eric Cantona appears to give him some life coaching. With some great supporting performances from his fellow football loving postal pals, Looking For Eric maintains a strong element of Loach’s usual grit, but with plenty of warmth and laughs along the way.

“unusual, amusing and affecting” — Time Out

Loach’s BAFTA winning and much-loved adaptation of Barry Hines’ book about a boy befriending and caring for a kestrel hawk. In his first on-screen role, David Bradley plays Billy, the boy whose spirit couldn’t be broken.

Raining Stones Sun 12 + Tue 14 July Sul 12 + Maw 14 Gorff UK/1993/91mins/15. Dir: Ken Loach. With Bruce Jones, Ricky Tomlinson.

Bob needs to raise some money to pay for his daughter’s first communion… by any means necessary. With a style that’s at times gentle and engaging and often laugh-out-loud funny, Raining Stones tells the story of men clinging precariously to their self-respect in a world with no jobs.

A winner at Bafta, Cannes and many other festivals around the world, this uplifting film tells the story of a feisty but naive teenage boy who turns to crime in an attempt to get the money needed to buy a home for himself and his mother who is returning from prison. Written with long-time collaborator Paul Laverty, Loach yet again favours nonprofessional actors (the compelling Compston) and draws tremendous performances in this powerful social-realist drama. 3 FOR 2 Ticket Offer: Save up to £5.20. My Name Is Joe

My Name Is Joe Sun 19 + Tue 21 July Sul 19 + Maw 21 Gorff UK/1998/105mins/15. Dir: Ken Loach. With Peter Mullen, Louise Goodall, David McKay.

Peter Mullen (also in Loach’s Riff Raff) won a best actor award at Cannes for his turn as unemployed recovering alcoholic Joe, who falls for his community health worker in one of the toughest neighbourhoods in Glasgow. Wounded from past experiences, their relationship tentatively grows as she discovers his spirit and sincerity in staying sober. However, as in all Laverty’s scripts, nothing in life is that easy and a member of the young football team he’s managing draws him back in to a world of drugs and crime that he’s fighting so hard to escape.

Poland/2007/121mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Andrzej Wajda. With Artur Zmijewski, Maja Ostaszewska, Andrzej Chyra.

USA/2008/120mins/15. Dir: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck. With Algenis Perez Soto, Alina Vargas, Andew Holland.

Now in his 80s, Wajda remains one of the leading lights in Polish cinema and the quality of his latest film reflects his wealth of experience. The little known, outside of Poland at least, massacre of 15,000 Police officers in the Katyn forest in 1940 was always blamed on the Nazis when in reality Stalin’s Russia was the perpetrator. This had been denied by the Russians for many years, until an official admission in 1990. Wajda’s father was a victim of the massacre when the director was 14, and perhaps because of his personal experiences Wajda concentrates as much on the impact on the wives and children, as he does the horror of the massacre itself.

The writing/directing team behind Half Nelson take us on another moving, humane exploration of contemporary American society. Sugar is a young amateur baseball player attempting to escape the grinding poverty of life in the slums of the Dominican Republic. Making it to the US, Sugar finds himself culturally displaced, linguistically at sea and homesick in the alien cornfields of Iowa. Despite a faltering romance he decides to search for another path to happiness and turns his back on baseball. Beautifully made with real depth and sensitivity, this is a thought-provoking film which consistently wrong-foots expectations and is as far from a mainstream American sport film as it is possible to get.

Fri 10 — Thu 16 July Gwe 10 — Iau 16 Gorff France/2008/97mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Fred Cavaye. With Vincent Lindon, Diane Kruger.

Anything for Her is the latest fastpaced, French thriller to cross the Channel. Julien and his wife Lisa are living happily with their small son when their world is shattered by an unexpected visit from the police. Lisa (European star Kruger) is taken to prison for a crime she did not commit, and the film’s flashback structure details her husband’s increasing desperation to find a way to free her. Exhausting all legal channels, he is forced to consider the unthinkable and thus begins a daring plan to break her out of jail. This is a tense and atmospheric thriller which generates a cracking pace while the leads give compelling performances as a family under siege.

Fri 10 — Thu 16 July Gwe 10 — Iau 16 Gorff

USA/2008/98mins/15. Dir: Matt Aselton. With Paul Dano, Zooey Deschanel, John Goodman.

US/2008/92 mins/12A. Dir: Joel Hopkins. With Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson.

Academy Award winners Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson star in this hopeful and romantic celebration of new beginnings. New Yorker Harvey Shine arrives in London for his daughter’s wedding to learn that she has chosen to have her stepfather walk her down the aisle. Doing his best to hide his devastation, he leaves before the reception but still misses his plane. Drowning his sorrows at the airport bar, Harvey meets Kate, a slightly prickly 40-something whose life is limited to work, the occasional humiliating blind date and endless phone calls from her smothering mother. This unexpected meeting inspires both as they begin to transform each other’s lives…

Fri 17 — Thu 23 July Gwe 17 — Iau 23 Gorff

This stylish directorial debut has impeccable indie credentials with the veteran Christine Vachon as producer and Paul Dano (Let There Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine) and Zooey Deschanel (Assassination of Jesse James, All The Real Girls) as its stars. Dano plays Brian, a mattress salesman with a burning desire to adopt a Chinese baby, perhaps in an attempt to escape his highachieving, repressed family life. After a young woman arrives to collect an order, however, Brian’s plans for the future become sidetracked. Fresh and lively, this is an enjoyable and entertaining take on love, commitment and family life. The couple at its core are likeable characters and there is able support from John Goodman as Deschanel’s blustering but tender dad.

Sunshine Cleaning Fri 17 — Thu 23 July Gwe 17 — Iau 23 Gorff USA/2009/91mins/15. Dir: Christine Jeffs. With Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Alan Arkin.

From the producers of Little Miss Sunshine, this endearing, offbeat comedy follows Rose (Adams), a single mother who’s desperate to raise the funds to send her precocious young son to a private school that won’t rely on medication as ‘the answer’. When cleaning people’s homes fails to bring in sufficient cash, her cop boyfriend notices that people get paid very well for mopping up crime scenes after gruesome murders. While not the easiest of tasks, this grisly role allows Rose and her reluctant sister (Blunt), to help people in the aftermath of unexpected traumas, while also helping Rose to make sense of her own confusing life.

Set against a backdrop of 1960s London, this off-beat biopic of the maverick song-writing and producing genius Joe Meek boasts a superb cast under firsttime director, Nick Moran. Enjoying success with Telstar, the best selling record of its time, Meek worked alongside many much-loved recording artists of the time including his house band, The Tornados, until bad luck, amphetamines and depression forced him a decline of murder, the occult and suicide. An iconic figure in the world of British pop, Meek’s tale is a compelling and deeply troubled one. The film boasts a cracking soundtrack including titles from Gene Vincent, Screaming Lord Sutch & The Savages and of course, The Tornados.

In order to protect their lands, the ruling warlords of the region must overcome their differences and join forces. Mexico/2008/81mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Fernando Eimbcke. With Diego Catano, Hectgor Herrera, Daniela Valentine.

Master of the crime-action-thriller genre, Oscar nominated director, Michael Mann (Collateral, Heat) takes us along the crime ridden streets of 1930s Chicago with this story of legendary Depressionera outlaw and first Public Enemy No 1, John Dillinger. No one could stop him and no jail could hold him, his daring escapes endearing him to almost everyone, from his girlfriend Billie Frechette to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression. But his lightning raids made him a target of J Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis.

Sara and Brian live an idyllic life with their young son and daughter. The family is rocked by the sudden, heartbreaking news that their daughter Kate has leukaemia, forcing them to make a difficult and unorthodox choice in order to save Kate’s life. Based on the novel by Jodi Piccoult, this is a film that challenges your perceptions of love and loyalty and gives new meaning to the definition of healing.

An audience favourite at this year’s Wales One World Film Festival, this gently funny story follows a young boy who crashes a car and searches a sleepy Yucatan town for a mechanic to fix it. The original mix of humour and sadness is combined with gorgeous-looking scenes in which not a lot is said, but the silence speaks volumes. The incidental characters have lovely comic touches — one’s a puny Bruce Lee obsessive, another a wannabe punk singer. Lake Tahoe makes modesty a virtue providing a small but perfectly formed study of friendship, love, loss and the importance of family ties.

Tato and Beto are two brothers who have a simple dream of saving enough money to build their mother her dream house. But fate has other plans. A friendly game of football leads to first one, then the other, being taken on by the nation’s top talent scout and gives rise to the first of many emotional head-toheads between them. Suddenly they find themselves living the high-life of fame, riches, fast cars and beautiful women. But every dream has a dark side... In a Mexican all-star dream team Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna and Carlos Guaron (Y Tu Mana Tambien) are reunited in the first project from Alftonso Cuaron, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Guillermo Del Toro’s groundbreaking new company Cha Cha Cha.

Dividing the critics, Von Trier’s visceral and uncompromising latest feature is not for the faint hearted. After the loss of their child, a grieving couple retreat to their cabin ‘Eden’ in the woods hoping to overcome their loss and repair their broken hearts and marriage. However, when Dafoe’s character ‘He’, as a relentless and overbearing talk therapist, suggests that ‘She’ should relinquish her medication and have the courage to stay in the situation that frightens her, he seriously underestimates the power of their absolute and allencompassing grief. Come and see it and make up your own mind.

Ray Eddy’s husband abandons his car at a Mohawk bingo parlour and disappears, leaving her penniless but determined to do anything possible to keep her family on the rails. For Lila, a Mohawk single mother, this abandoned car is her opportunity to make the money she needs to get her young son back from her mother-in-law who has ‘stolen’ him. Thrown together by circumstance, the two women make hazardous car trips across the ice of a frozen river to smuggle Chinese and Pakistani immigrants across the border into the US. While this is the stuff of action thrillers, first-time writer/ director Hunt’s naturalistic style keeps it grounded in the struggle for economic survival and has received critical acclaim in festivals around the world.

Comprised of material shot by undercover reporters in Burma, this incredible documentary tells the story of those who risk their lives to film and then smuggle the footage out of the country. The material is used for free by foreign TV crews and international media who are banned from the country and is then broadcast back into Burma via satellite. This film offers a unique insight into high-risk journalism and dissidence in a police state, while at the same time providing documentation of the historical and dramatic days of September 2007 when the Buddhist monks started to march.

In the future, the energy crisis has been averted by cheap fusion, with Lunar Industries maintaining a mostly-automated base on the dark side of the moon to collect the necessary fuel. Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) and computer GERTY (voice of Kevin Spacey) have the lonely job of monitoring the refineries. Bell is nearing the end of his three-year tour when there’s an accident on one of the refineries. But when he returns from carrying out the routine maintenance something seems amiss… is GERTY hiding something?

This tale of revenge culminates in the flooding of Dolwyn, a fictional village, in 1892. Richard Burton plays Gareth, working in the local shop and pining for the love of the local land owner’s niece. Rob Davies (Emlyn Williams) returns to Dolwyn, the scene of a childhood trauma, to exact revenge on its inhabitants...

Zeffirelli draws great gusto and ferocity from the then married Burton and Taylor in this adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic battle of the sexes.

In this first-ever screen adaptation of Dylan Thomas’ classic play, Burton fulfilled a life-long ambition to appear in a part which his friend Thomas wrote especially for him. It remains moving, funny, beautiful and completely timeless.

Born in 1883 in rural France, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel developed a keen eye, forthright manner and revolutionary approach to women’s tailoring, transforming her from a gruff peasant girl into the embodiment of chic. Anne Fontaine’s tenth feature and first period film promises to be her finest achievement yet, due in no small part to Audrey Tautou’s splendid performance as the headstrong, selfsufficient French designer, who in pre-First World War France was one of the first women to assert herself in a man’s world.

UK/Bangladesh/2008/81 mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Sadik Ahmed. With Tariq Anam Khan, Ahmed Rubel, Tanveer Hassan.

This intense contemporary western by UK film-maker Sadik Ahmed captures the soulful landscapes of the marshlands of Bangladesh. Mysterious lone gunman Kala arrives in a small town armed only with a rifle. The town is split by a feud between two leaders, the corrupt and ruthless Chairman and the local Thakur, the last of the local Hindu landlords whose aim is to reclaim land to build a temple. Kala is soon approached by both sides, but he’s on a mission of his own to avenge his mother’s murder...

Fri 14 — Thu 20 Aug Gwe 14 — Iau 20 Awst Germany/2008/98 mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: Andreas Dresen. With Ursual Werner, Horst Rehberg, Horst Westphal.

While it may be a topic seldomcovered in mainstream cinema, Cloud 9 proves that love and sex don’t stop once you reach your 60s. Inge repairs clothes in her home and one day decides to deliver her work to a client in person. On meeting Karl, the two are passionately drawn to each other, but Inge is still married and devoted to her loving but predictable husband of 30 years, so what should she do? This gentle and heart-warming comedy focuses on the decisions she must make that will affect the people around her, and proves that falling in love can be difficult whatever age you are. Winner of Un Certain Regard at Cannes 2008.

France/Germany/2008/100 mins/ subtitled/12A. Dir: Claire Denis. With Alex Descas, Mati Diop, Gregoire Colin.

Lionel, a widower and train driver, lives with his daughter Josephine, a law student who also works as a sales clerk. Their time together is based on routine, trust and subtle, affectionate gestures but despite all the constants, both know that one day Josephine must leave the security of their shared home. Award-winning writer and director, Claire Denis (Chocolat, Vendredi Soir) has created an atmospheric, gorgeously shot and deeply affecting study of the bond between father and daughter.

USA/2009/ctba. Dir: Max Mayer. With Hugh Dancy, Rose Byrne, Peter Gallagher.

Japan/2008/120 mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Fumihiko Sori. With Haruka Ayase, Shido Nakamura, Yosuke Kubozuka.

A winner at the Sundance Film Festival, this is the humorous and quirky tale of a young man living in the Manhattan apartment he once shared with his now deceased father. Adam works as an electronics engineer creating a toy company’s new talking doll. He also has Aspergers syndrome, so when Beth, a brainy and beautiful young woman who’s still smarting from a past relationship starts to fall for him, they must both learn how to truly connect with each another.

Continuing in the tradition of Zatoichi, director Fumihiko Sori (Ping Pong) introduces us to a female version of the famous sword hero. Haruka Ayase plays Ichi, a roaming blind woman, who travels the land with her shamisen, a threestringed Japanese guitar. But when the need arises, she reveals the sword hidden in her cane and unleashes her exceptional fighting skills to battle with yakuza and other assorted villains.

France/Canada/2008/114mins/15. Dir: Jean-Francois Richet. With Vincent Cassel, Gerard Depardeiu, Cecile De France.

Inspired by the true story of Jacques Mesrine, France’s most notorious gangster with 39 murders to this name, the first instalment of this epic charts Mesrine’s journey from disillusioned soldier in Algeria to becoming France’s eponymous Public Enemy No 1 after a series of prison escapes and increasingly brutal crimes. This hard hitting biopic boasts an allstar cast with Vincent Cassel as Mesrine, and Depardieu in a particularly creepy role as his underworld mentor. Look out for Part Two in September.

Mexico/USA/96 mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: Cary Fukunaga. With Marco Antionio Aguirre, Leonardo Alonson.

Belgium/2009/77 mins/subtitled/PG. Dir: Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon, Bruno Romy. With Dominque Abel, Fiona Gordon, Philipe Martz.

When Honduran teenager Sayra reunites with her father, she believes that her dream of a life in America may at last become possible. Sayra’s story interweaves with that of Willy, a young gang member and robber from southern Mexico. Sin Nombre, meaning ‘without a name’, explores the risky and fateful journeys taken by so many in the hope of a better future in the north. “an extraordinary debut film… He knows the material. He spent time riding on the tops of northward trains” — Roger Ebert

Fiona and Dom have a common passion for Latin Dancing. Teachers in a rural school by day, by night their lives abound with glorious dance competitions and the trophies they have accumulated over the years. However, one night their lives are turned upside down when they’re involved in a tragic car crash, avoiding a man trying to commit suicide. While this sounds like the stuff of heavy drama, in the hands of lead actors/directors Abel and Gordon (L’Iceberg), this is an optimistic, bright and humorous film, full to the brim with physical comedy, vivid colours, a little conversation and plenty of very clever dancing. “turns dark tragedy into deadpan comedy through a series of surreal gags” — Variety

Just Another Love Story (Kaerlighed på film) Fri 28 Aug — Thu 3 Sept Gwe 28 Awst — Iau 3 Medi Denmark/2007/100 mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: Ole Bornedal. With Anders W Berthelsen, Rebecka Hemse, Nikolaj Lie Kass.

She assumes that he is her boyfriend and Jonas is drawn into the possibilities of a new and exciting life. But when her real boyfriend begins to grow curious about the intruder that has stolen his identity, things begin to take a tense turn.
