Welcome

Welcome to your guide to all that’s happening during July. Our gallery and cinema have joined forces to bring the brilliant Bedwyr Williams here, and we can’t wait! Following a stellar reception at Glasgow International, we’ll be screening his two films, directed by the inimitable Casey Raymond and Ewan Jones Morris and there’ll be a Q&A with the man himself (p7). Our Gallery will host Cristoph Dettmeier’s first solo exhibition in the UK. Our theatre has a busy month, starting with Robert Zucco (p11). Lying somewhere between a detective thriller and a glamorous American gangster movie, this is August 012’s latest production following last year’s acclaimed ‘Caligula’. Do your children attend a Welsh school? Are you learning Welsh alongside them? Theatr Iolo’s Pen-blwydd Poenus Pete is the perfect show for you (p13). With Cannes Film Festival highlighting the latest films that we can enjoy over the coming months it’s sometimes useful to remember cinema greats, and this month we’re doing just that, with our Stanley Baker retrospective (p28–29). It’s fifty years since the release of Zulu, and we take a look back at the wonderful career of one of Wales’ greatest gifts to Hollywood. Speaking of Welsh greats, this month is also a chance to welcome back Cardiff-born journalist Jon Ronson, who is here to talk about his recent hit book and film Frank (p23). Thanks for reading and see you soon!

Christoph Dettmeier: Happy Birthday Preview: Fri 25 July 6-8pm Exhibition: Sat 26 July — Sun 21 Sep Christoph Dettmeier can find a Wild West prairie in Detroit, Berlin or anywhere that an industrial wasteland can stand in for a ghost town. In his bestknown photographic works they form the background for silhouettes of lone riders and grotesque cowboys and are depicted in such a way that these essentially non-descript places become surreal, absolutely timeless, and astonishingly picturesque. This multi-media exhibition - his first solo show in the UK - features a selection of such epic landscapes produced in response to significant locations in Wales and reflecting on this year’s centenary commemorations of the start of World War I. Dettmeier takes as his starting point the collective trauma of the war and the subsequent development of horror film and contemporary gaming genres and inserts this into these epic landscapes — most significantly in the practice trenches of Penally which provide a poignant backdrop to a new photographic series and a film that follows the imagined sight lines of a WW1 computer game to traverse the trenches in a frenetic and relentless manner.

Exhibition open: Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 12-6pm; Thursday & Friday 12-8pm; closed Monday

About the artist Christoph Dettmeier was born in Cologne and now lives and works in Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Waitin’ Around To Die’, Kunstverein Braunschweig (2010) and Galerie der Stadt Remscheid (2009); ‘Private Land’, rahncontemporary, Zürich and ‘Open Range’, Galerie Schmidt Maczollek, Cologne (2009) and ‘Badlands’, o.T. Raum für aktuelle Kunst, Luzern (2008). Selected group exhibitions and performances include ‘Experimentica12: Born Under A Bad Sign’, Chapter, Cardiff (2012) and the ‘2nd International Triennial of Contemporary Art (ITCA)’, Nationalgalerie Prague (2011) ‘2Dead_LINES. Kelly Best, Out Lines, colour pencil drawing, 2014

06

ART IN THE BAR Kelly Best: Out Lines Fri 23 May — Sun 3 Aug Kelly Best’s work is characterised by its often graphic execution and an aesthetic that implies both mathematical and chaotic systems. She seeks inspiration from the experience of inhabiting architectural spaces which she dismantles and partially reconfigures, abstracted from their origin. Her experimentation with perspective (and its removal) causes the work to oscillate between the image surface and the depicted space, populated with reconfigured architectural forms such as glazed domes, pillars or apertures. Her mark-making at Chapter references the sunlight as it obliquely casts elongated shapes on the wall from the skylights above. Working onto a specially selected off-white ground, she recreates versions of the sunlit delineations in coloured pencil. The work’s strength is in its subtlety: the drawn shapes are so close tonally and in colour to the wall that they can be easily overlooked, but the scale is such that once the viewer is aware of it the work has that much more presence, even when appreciated from a distance — and it is this recognition of our visual acuity that is most intriguing. These drawings, then, are an exercise in looking. We are so used to the passive act of seeing but are less well versed at looking. Best’s work prompts us to look at what we are seeing, simply out of the curiosity it engenders. Excerpts taken from a commissioned text by Chris Brown.

Biography Kelly Best was born in Kent in 1984 and completed her BA Fine Art painting degree at Kingston University, London. She now lives and works in Cardiff. Recent exhibitions include ‘Unit(e) Residency’, g39, Cardiff (2014); ‘Y Lle Celf’, National Eisteddfod of Wales, Denbigh, ‘Painting Exhibition’, Studio B, Cardiff (both 2013); ‘John Moores Painting Prize’, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, ‘Cardiff Open 2012’, Cardiff, ‘Door Painting Prize’, Centrespace Gallery, Bristol (all 2012).

Event

Bedwyr Williams Echt and The Starry Messenger Film screenings followed by Q&A with Bedwyr Williams, Casey Raymond & Ewan Jones Morris Thu 17 July 8.30pm Echt, a new film by Bedwyr Williams depicts a dystopian future in which a fast-track feudal system has left the country divided among new chieftains. In this new world where status is based on conspicuous consumption, hoarders are kings. They have set up their new courts in former dance halls and clubs, populated by a host of Bedwyr’s acutely observed characters. Realised with the collaboration of the omni talented Casey Raymond and Ewan JonesMorris, Echt was originally part of of larger installation in Tramway, Glasgow as part of the City’s Glasgow International Festival.

Alongside the screening of Echt we are also pleased to be showing The Starry Messenger. Originally commissioned for presentation at the Wales Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of Art 2013, The Starry Messenger was the first collaborative film project by Bedwyr with Casey and Ewan.

Thu 3 July + Fri 4 July 7.30pm “We all have a journey to make, stupid girl, even you.” Where do we come from and what makes us who we are? Is our destiny written in the stars or stamped in a passport? Born on the very first day of a new nation, Hashi, the girl who always smiles, grew up surrounded by flying tigers in the Sunderban jungles. In The Tiger and the Moustache, Saikat Ahamed traces the journey of Hashi, his mother, and the emerging nation of Bangladesh. Travel with him, as he slides in and out of time from the agonies of Partition in 1947 right up to the present day, as we board fishing boats up the Megna River and rickshaw along the dusty roads of Dacca. From East London to East Bengal, taking in Birmingham, Germany and Glasgow, the story of Bangladesh is woven together through storytelling, theatre, live music, dance and a healthy dose of humour. Writer and performer Saikat Ahamed is known to television audiences through regular parts in Monday Monday (ITV) and Trollied (Sky TV) and works a great deal at The Bristol Old Vic. He is delighted to bring his one man show to Cardiff, following a sell-out week at Tobacco Factory Theatres last year. £10/£8 Age 12+

“Ahamed is an excellent storyteller, bringing an energetic bounce to the stage that invests his performance with real fizz.” Bristol Evening Post

Craig Jones, I.T apprentice This month, I’m looking forward to attending the Cardiff Comedy Festival, as this is the 3rd year Chapter has been the partner venue. I’m sure it will be a great day. Along with that I am also excited for the Cardiff Mini Film Fest: Comedy edition. I love seeing short comedy films which are sure to be hilarious. Along with those, I will be sure to catch the Monty Python Live (mostly), which is the last ever performance of the five remaining Pythons. Hopefully there will be some classics skits that we all love and remember.

Tue 22 — Sat 26 July 7.30pm + matinee Sat 26 July 2.30pm Across London, twelve people wake up from an identical, horrific dream. At the same moment, a young man named John returns home after years away to find economic despair, futile protest and a Prime Minister about to declare war. But John has a vision for the future. In recent years which have seen governments fall and thousands take to the streets, 13 explores the meaning of personal responsibility, the hold that the past has over the future and the nature of belief itself. This is the Welsh premiere of 13, which was first performed in 2011 at The Royal National Theatre. On Thu 24 July there will be a pre-show talk at 6.15pm and a post-show talk at 10.15pm. £10/£5

“ Aomori Project is like coming in from the cold.” Singapore Business Times 2012

Sioned Huws Aomori Aomori Thu 31 July + Fri 1 Aug 7.30pm A performance by a company of dancers, musicians and a singer from Japan, Wales, UK and Europe. Drawing on memory and the influence of environment and the everyday, Aomori Aomori is a performance work of dance, song and sounds arising from the arctic winters of North Japan; framing a work of emotive containment, where movement, voice, sound and silence become multidimensional. In repetition, movement assumes a sensibility of an internal landscape, reflecting the soul of Aomori; the silent repetition of snowfall.

A Tsugaru ‘hand dance’, a detail in focus, from vertical to horizontal, a choreographic process of translation and understanding, a gesture in repetition. A juxtaposition of organized systems, balanced on a fine line between order and chaos, being and nothingness, a transitional simplicity. With Tsugaru teodori dancer Yoshiya Ishikawa, Tsugaru Shamisen — Hasegawa Sangen-kai, minyo singer Kiyoko Goto (who came to Chapter for the Aomori Project in 2011 and 2013) dancers Sioned Huws, Elena Jacinta, Agnese Lanza and Taz Burns. Aomori Project is an ongoing performance project that since 2008 has made connections across the Northeast coast of Japan and has toured to over twenty international venues and festivals in Europe, Japan and Singapore. £12/£10/£8

After landing on Earth and slipping into the skin of a human woman, Scarlett Johansson’s space creature drives around Scotland seducing young men before one of them gives her pause to look at other aspects of human nature. An abstract, fascinating deconstruction of sexual power with a hypnotic musical score, this is a mesmerizing cinematic experience.

Inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the illegitimate mixed race daughter of Admiral John Lindsay who was raised by her aristocratic great uncle, Lord Mansfield. Belle’s lineage affords her certain privileges, yet her status prevents her from the traditions of noble social standing. After meeting an idealistic young vicar’s son bent on changing society, he and Belle help shape Lord Mansfield’s role as Lord Chief Justice to end slavery in England.

Jon Ronson’s Frank Story

Noys R Us

Frank

chapter.org

Sat 19 July For three years in the 1980s Jon Ronson was the keyboard player with the Frank Sidebottom Oh Blimey Big Band. Frank wore a papier-mâché head and nobody outside his inner circle knew his true identity. They toured the UK, playing to sell-out crowds. They rode high. And then it all went wrong… Jon presents a one-man show telling the true story behind the fictionalized movie. Part funny memoir, part movie diary, this is a tribute to outsider artists too wonderfully strange to ever make it in the mainstream. £12/£10

Frank Fri 18 + Sat 19 July Ireland/2013/95mins/15. Dir: Lenny Abrahamson. With: Domhnall Gleeson, Michael Fassbender, Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Young wannabe musician Jon discovers he’s bitten off more than he can chew when he joins an eccentric pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank. Loosely inspired by writer Jon Ronson’s time in the backing band for masked cult icon Frank Sidebottom, as well as the stories of outsider artists such as Daniel Johnston, this is a dazzling dark comedy.

Chapter Cinema, in association with The Full Moon, brings you Noys R Us Film Night. Once a month we’ll be pitching up with the best in alt/rock/metal/punk cinema. Drink, relax and watch some of the most incendiary music films ever made.

The Devil and Daniel Johnston Mon 28 July Doors: 7pm. Film: 8pm. USA/2005/110min/12 Dir: Jeff Feuerzeig

The Devil and Daniel Johnston tells the story of, now legendary musician Daniel Johnston, chronicling his life, music and art, along with his ongoing struggles with bipolar disorder, which manifests itself in demonic self-obsession. Famed for his prolific lo-fi recordings, his music has been covered by the likes of Beck, Wilco, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and Pearl Jam. As well as being a uniquely gifted musician he is also an artist whose drawings have been exhibited worldwide and whose fans include Johnny Depp and Simpsons creator Matt Groening. His wild fluctuations, downward spirals and periodic respites are chronicled through revealing interviews, home movies, recorded tapes, and performance footage. In this brutally austere film, we wait with Camille, powerfully embodied by Binoche, as she expects a visit from her brother Paul. Stanley Baker Retrospective Celebrating 50 years since the release of Zulu Born in the mining community of Ferndale, Stanley Baker, alongside lifelong friend Richard Burton, went on to Hollywood stardom as a character actor rather than romantic lead. Proving an enduring and powerful presence as an actor and later as a producer, he made some of the great films of the era. Over the summer we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Zulu and pay homage to this Welsh great.

Fresh out of prison, Tom signs up as a notorious ‘Hell Driver’, a truck driver with a huge workload. But he soon realises that the driving is the least brutal part of the job. The other truck drivers and their hate, drinking and fights are far more dangerous. An efficient and energetic thriller with an outstanding cast, including an early performance by a young Sean Connery.

Stanley Baker: As Good as Bread Sun 6 July Stanley Baker was a giant of Welsh cinema. He could play heroes and villains with ease. But he was a tender tough guy who remained close to his Welsh roots and eschewed the Hollywood road taken by his contemporaries. UK/1957/105mins/PG. Dir: Basil Dearden. With: Stanley Baker, Peter Cushing, Anne Heywood, David McCallum.

January 22, 1879, an army of 4,000 Zulu warriors have already decimated a huge British garrison; now they are on their way to the much smaller Rorke’s Drift manned by a Welsh regiment. A Royal Engineers officer is determined to stand his ground, despite having only a skeleton garrison at his command. His tactics are constantly at odds with those of a lieutenant, who feels that a retreat is called for, but it becomes clear that if the garrison is to survive, they’d better pay heed. A career-best performance from Baker, a film he also co-produced, and an eyecatching first role for Caine, this rousing film still has power today.

After investigating a case of juvenile crime, Detective Jack Truman comes into contact with the Murphy family. As he becomes more involved with them he begins to suspect Johnny, the elder brother, of being an arsonist but Jack doesn’t realise the desperate measures Johnny will take to avoid capture.
