Garth Evans But, Hands Have Eyes: Six decades of sculpture Preview | Rhagddangosiad: 13.09 6-8pm Exhibition | Arddangosfa: 14.09.19–26.01.20 The work of Garth Evans is integral to the history of British sculpture. His practice has largely been defined by the use of geometric, asymmetrical forms and a commitment to simple, everyday materials. Evans is noted for a body of work that offers a bridge between 1960s modernism and the lyrical experimentation with a broader range of materials that followed. Experimenting with the potential of scale, weight, medium and form, Evans’ work comprises both a formal and conceptual approach. He is always interested in interrogating established boundaries and, as a result, his sculptures are made from a diverse range of materials including ceramics, steel, leather and fibreglass. Evans states that many of his works, even when most abstract, are ‘triggers for, and containers of, particular identifiable memories’. Ultimately, Garth Evans’ works are ambiguous, multifaceted and completely original. This exhibition, Evans’ first in Wales since the 1970s, features works from the 1960s to the present day.

About the artist Garth Evans was born in Cheshire in 1934. His grandfather was from Cardiff and his mother grew up in Pencoed, South Wales where Garth would spend his summers each year. Evans went on to study sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art, London and now lives and works in North East Connecticut, USA. Since the 1960s, Evans has exhibited widely across the UK and USA including in the influential group exhibitions ‘British Sculpture ‘72’, Royal Academy of Arts, London (1972) and ‘The Condition of Sculpture’, Hayward Gallery, London (1975). In 2013, artist Richard Deacon curated the survey exhibition ‘Garth Evans’ at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. His work is represented in numerous collections including Tate; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum. Mae gwaith Garth Evans yn ganolog i hanes cerflunwaith Prydain. Mae ei arfer wedi’i ddiffinio i raddau helaeth gan ei ddefnydd o ffurfiau geometrig ac anghymesur, a’i ymrwymiad i ddeunyddiau syml bob dydd. Mae Garth yn adnabyddus am greu gwaith sy’n pontio rhwng moderniaeth y chwedegau a’r gwaith telynegol a ddilynodd a oedd yn arbrofi ag ystod ehangach o ddeunyddiau. Drwy arbrofi â photensial maint, pwysau, cyfrwng a ffurf, mae Garth yn ymdrin â’i waith mewn modd ffurfiol a chysyniadol. Mae diddordeb ganddo mewn herio ffiniau sefydledig, ac o ganlyniad caiff ei gerfluniau eu creu o amrywiaeth o ddeunyddiau, gan gynnwys serameg, dur, lledr a ffibr gwydrog. Yn ôl Garth, mae llawer o’i waith, hyd yn oed ar ei fwyaf haniaethol, yn ‘sbarduno ac yn cynnwys atgofion penodol’. Yn y pen draw, mae gwaith Garth Evans yn amwys, yn aml-wynebog ac yn hollol wreiddiol. Mae’r arddangosfa yma, sef arddangosfa gyntaf Garth yng Nghymru ers y saithdegau, yn cynnwys gweithiau o’r chwedegau hyd heddiw.

Art in the Bar | Celf yn y Bar Jon Pountney: Waiting For The Light 06.09.19–14.02.20

Waiting for the Light’ is a body of photographic works that capture a particular type of light; a harsh, acutely angled low sunlight that gives the scenes in Jon Pountney’s images a somewhat surreal and melancholy feel. Hard light catches the swish of a grubby lace curtain, or casts a shadow across the delicate, threadbare surface of a mattress, to elevate the seemingly mundane into something extraordinary and beautiful. The hard glare of the sun makes the subject appear hyper-real; rendering the everyday unfamiliar and enigmatic. Jon Pountney is not merely a spectator, choosing to capture moments that take place within the community in which he lives and works. This familiarity with his subjects helps to imbue the work with empathy and creates intriguing narratives that are all and more absorbing because, with one exception, the works are bereft of real human presence.

Corff o weithiau ffotograffaidd yw Waiting for the Light, sy’n cyfleu math penodol o olau; golau haul cras ac isel ar ongl lem, sy’n rhoi ymdeimlad lled swreal a lleddf i’r golygfeydd yn lluniau Jon Pountney. Mae golau caled yn cyfleu crandrwydd llenni les brwnt, neu’n taflu cysgod ar draws arwyneb cain, treuliedig matres, gan ddyrchafu’r hyn sy’n ymddangos yn ddi-ddim i fod yn rhywbeth hynod a hardd. Mae disgleirdeb caled yr haul yn gwneud i’r gwrthrych ymddangos yn or-real; gan droi pethau arferol yn anghyfarwydd ac enigmatig. Nid gwyliwr yn unig yw Jon Pountney; mae’n dewis cyfleu’r momentau sy’n digwydd yn y gymuned y mae’n byw ac yn gweithio ynddi. Mae bod yn gyfarwydd â’i wrthrychau’n helpu i drwytho’r gwaith gydag empathi, ac yn creu naratifau diddorol sy’n fwy cyfareddol fyth oherwydd, heblaw am un eithriad, does dim pobl go iawn yn bresennol yn ei waith.

About the Artist Jon Pountney is an artist based in South Wales. His work spans photography, painting, drawing, and filmmaking. He is interested in creating narratives through this imagery; exploring the idea of a ‘sense of place’ and often creating work that is routed in specific locations or communities. Previous projects include ‘Cardiff before Cardiff’, which uncovered an unseen photographic collection of the 1970/80s and later became a publication and exhibition at the Wales Millenium Centre, Cardiff. He has been selected as Artist in Residence for Cadw, firstly at Castell Coch and then again at the world heritage site of Blaenavon. In 2015, the BBC commissioned him to present the documentary, Forgotten Images of Valley Life. Currently, Jon is working on a joint commission for the National Assembly for Wales and Ffotogallery.

Ynglŷn â’r Artist Artist o dde-ddwyrain Cymru yw Jon Pountney. Mae ei waith yn cynnwys ffotograffiaeth, paentio, arlunio a chreu ffilmiau. Mae ganddo ddiddordeb mewn creu naratifau drwy’r ddelweddaeth yma; gan archwilio’r syniad o ‘ymdeimlad o le’, ac mae’n creu gwaith sydd wedi’i wreiddio mewn lleoliadau neu gymunedau penodol yn aml. Mae ei brosiectau blaenorol yn cynnwys ‘Cardiff before Cardiff’, a oedd yn datgelu casgliad ffotograffaidd gwreiddiol o’r saithdegau a’r wythdegau, a ddaeth yn gyhoeddiad ac yn arddangosfa yng Nghanolfan Mileniwm Cymru yng Nghaerdydd yn ddiweddarach. Cafodd ei ddewis fel Artist Preswyl Cadw, yng Nghastell Coch i ddechrau, ac yna eto yn safle treftadaeth y byd ym Mlaenafon. Yn 2015, cafodd Jon ei gomisiynu gan y BBC i gyflwyno’r rhaglen ddogfen Forgotten Images of Valley Life. Ar hyn o bryd, mae Jon yn gweithio ar gomisiwn ar y cyd ar gyfer y Cynulliad Cenedlaethol a Ffotogaleri.

‘ There’s not much beauty in it. I can’t see no beauty at all in that.’

The Cardiff Tapes 19.09- 20.09,7.30pm | 21.09 2.00pm & 7.30pm In 1972 Garth Evans created a large-scale sculpture that was placed in The Hayes, Cardiff for six months as part of a ground-breaking, UK-wide sculpture project. Garth chose Cardiff as the location for his work as he had very strong family connections with Wales and his Welsh grandfather’s tales of his time as a miner were hugely influential on the sculpture’s form – evoking both a hammer-like tool and the image of a mine tunnel that was as black as coal. The day after the sculpture was installed, Garth anonymously recorded the comments of passers-by and the transcript of these fascinating recordings forms the basis of this original play. Adapted by award-winning writer Leila Philip, this production is directed by Wayne Vincent and presented in partnership with Everyman Theatre.

Ym 1972, creodd Garth Evans gerflun graddfa fawr a oedd wedi’i osod yn yr Aes yng Nghaerdydd am chwe mis, fel rhan o brosiect cerflunwaith ledled Prydain a oedd yn torri tir newydd. Dewisodd Garth Gaerdydd yn lleoliad i’w waith, gan fod ganddo gysylltiadau teuluol cryf iawn gyda Chymru, ac roedd hanesion ei daid am ei gyfnod fel glöwr yng Nghymru yn ddylanwadol iawn ar ffurf y cerflun – sy’n ymdebygu i declyn tebyg i forthwyl a delwedd o dwnnel glofa mor ddu â’r glo. Y diwrnod ar ôl gosod y cerflun, aeth Garth ati yn ddienw i recordio sylwadau’r bobl a oedd yn cerdded heibio iddo, a thrawsgrifiad o’r recordiadau diddorol yma yw sail y ddrama wreiddiol yma. Addaswyd y gwaith gan yr awdur llwyddiannus Leila Philip, cafodd ei gyfarwyddo gan Wayne Vincent, a’i gyflwyno mewn partneriaeth â Theatr Everyman.

But, Hands Have Eyes: Six decades of sculpture 14.09.19–26.01.20

Untitled

18.09.19 — 18.03.20 In 1972 Garth Evans created a large-scale sculpture that was placed in The Hayes, Cardiff city centre for six months. After the project, the sculpture was relocated to Leicestershire where it has remained neglected and unseen by the public. Following a successful crowdfunding campaign the generous donations of the public have enabled Chapter to carry out the specialist restoration that is so desperately needed. In a unique project, Chapter in partnership with Art Fund will now return the work to its original location almost 50 years after it was first seen.

Ym 1972, creodd Garth Evans gerflun ar raddfa fawr a osodwyd yn yr Aes, yng nghanol dinas Caerdydd am chwe mis. Ar ôl y prosiect, symudwyd y cerflun i Swydd Gaerlŷr, ac yno mae wedi cael ei esgeuluso a’i guddio rhag y cyhoedd. Mae ymgyrch cyllido torfol lwyddiannus a rhoddion hael y cyhoedd wedi galluogi Chapter i gynnal y gwaith adfer arbenigol y mae mawr ei angen arno. Mewn prosiect unigryw, bydd Chapter, mewn partneriaeth ag Art Fund, yn dychwelyd y gwaith i’w leoliad gwreiddiol bron i hanner can mlynedd ar ôl ei ddangos am y tro cyntaf.
