Welcome

Welcome to your guide to all that’s in store at Chapter this March. With Easter upon us we’ve got the holidays covered, with plenty of family films and performances for the whole family to enjoy… Delve into the curious world of Flossy and Boo (p14), who return to Chapter with their unique brand of storytelling, featuring puppetry, music and outrageous characters to delight the little ones. Or bring the family to our cosy cinema, where we’ll be screening classics The Jungle Book and Pinocchio as well as recent favourites Inside Out and Minions (p32-33). With sixteen films over seven days, WOW Film Festival (p24–29) brings a plethora of films from around the globe to our doorstep this month. After a hard day at work (or a lazy afternoon matinee) our Caffi Bar is a bit of a bolthole, and this month we’re thrilled that the Bar will host Unknown Pleasures, (8–12 Mar) (p8) a beer festival that celebrates the very best of Manchester’s increasingly exciting brewing scene. Thanks for reading and see you soon!

Rose Wylie’s pictures are bold, occasionally chaotic, often unpredictable, and always fiercely independent, without being domineering. Wylie works directly on to large, unprimed, un-stretched canvases and her inspiration comes from many and varied sources, most of them popular and vernacular. The cut-out techniques of collage and the framing devices of film, cartoon strips and Renaissance panels inform her compositions and repeated motifs. Often working from memory, she distils her subjects into succinct observations, using text to give additional emphasis to her recollections. Wylie borrows from first-hand imagery of her everyday life as well as films, newspapers, magazines, and television allowing herself to follow

loosely associated trains of thought, often in the initial form of drawings on paper. The ensuing paintings are spontaneous but carefully considered: mixing up ideas and feelings from both external and personal worlds. Rose Wylie favours the particular, not the general; although subjects and meaning are important, the act of focused looking is even more so. Every image is rooted in a specific moment of attention, and while her work is contemporary in terms of its fragmentation and cultural references, it is also traditional in its commitment to the most fundamental aspects of picturemaking: drawing, colour, and texture.

In 2011, she was given the Paul Hamlyn Award and in 2014, she won the John Moore’s Painting Prize. Unknown Pleasures

Tue 8 — Sat 12 Mar (Bar opening times — see calendar for details) Having stepped out from the creamy shadow of Boddingtons, Manchester is in the midst of a craft beer revolution. Small, but mighty, microbreweries such as Six O’Clock Beer Co and Blackjack Beers have sprung up to join the likes of Marble Brewery in making Manchester something of a beer destination. The city will be holding its first official Manchester Beer Week in June this year, and we thought we’d join the celebrations with our annual cask ale festival this month. We’ll be bringing in beers from a dozen or so new or small breweries, none of which will be served with a Flake! And if you’re into spirits, and the name Zymurgorium means anything to you, be excited. Very excited….

British Dance Edition Tue 15 — Fri 18 Mar British Dance Edition (BDE) is the biennial showcase of British dance. Recognised as a major event within the international dance calendar, it presents a diverse programme of quality dance over an intensive four-day period to industry promoters and presenters. The four key venues Wales Millennium Centre, National Dance Company Wales’ Dance House and The Riverfront are being led by Chapter and its creative producer programme Coreo Cymru, who has successfully brought British Dance Edition to Wales for the first time since being established by National Dance Network in 1998. Chapter and its consortium partners are delighted to be inviting and hosting up to 375 delegates to support the buying and selling of British dance and to forge new links within the international dance community. The showcase will present performances from 36 leading and emerging dance companies and artists from all four UK nations including Wales’s National Dance Company Wales, Jo Fong, Gwyn Emberton Dance, Theatr Genedlaethol, Vertical Dance Kate Lawrence and Up & Over It. Within the dynamic programme five performances will be on public sale at Wales Millennium Centre and The Riverfront in Newport offering audiences a chance to experience some of the most exciting dance the UK can offer. These include two triple bills in the Donald Gordon Theatre including work by Russell Maliphant,

Phoenix Dance Company, Scottish Dance Theatre, Hofesh Shechter Company, National Dance Company Wales and Candoco; and at The Riverfront a double bill from rising stars Aakash Odedra and James Cousins, and riveting dance theatre from both Gary Clarke Company and Gecko Theatre. Surrounding this packed programme of work is an extensive trade show representing up to 70 British companies. There will be pitches from an additional 11 artists and companies about their forthcoming productions and ideas, including Ballet Cymru, Simon Whitehead, Shobana Jeyasingh and Jasmin Vardimon and the Business of Dance programme for emerging artists and producers in partnership with Dance UK and the British Council. One-day passes will be available to local independent artists and professionals providing entry into the Trade-show, discussion sessions, networking receptions and selected performances on 17 March at Wales Millennium Centre. Aczel is known for not following the rules of stand-up comedy and he aims to use his show, with help of the Chaos Theory, to change the world once and for all — although it may turn out to be too complicated. He asks whether you can have your cake and eat it — i.e. seek to change human consciousness forever and keep your weekends free. Ed includes a couple of amusingly circular stories about his life, which thankfully don’t last long. Meet Fred Thu 3 Mar 1.30pm + 7.30pm Meet Fred. He’s just a regular guy who wants to get on in life: get a job, find a nice girl, settle down. The only problem is that Fred is a puppet, and that’s where his dependency issues start. Day to day life is tough when you rely on three other guys being with you at all times. Out for a quiet walk, on a date, in the bathroom, life is never simple for the puppets amongst us. Created in association with puppetry experts Blind Summit, this “massively entertaining” (Wales Arts Review) comedy theatre show is about an outsider trying to make his mark in a world in which he needs a lot of help. Witty, poignant and full of Fred’s badass attitude, Meet Fred features a mouthy puppet and, as with all Hijinx productions, live performance by actors with and without learning disabilities.

Good News From The Future What Comes Next? Fri 18 + Sat 19 Mar 8pm ‘We are happy in our own skins — our maturity brings a whole new set of delights.’ Another chance to see a surprise hit from last November’s Cardiff Dance Festival. Good News from the Future brings together pioneering physical theatre practitioners, a clutch of people who haven’t performed for a long time and some people who’ve only just started. It marks and celebrates the wisdom of older bodies and the adventurousness of time-travelled heads. A dozen performers in a wildly eccentric and exuberant improvisation of solos, duos and group encounters. And above all — fun! £10/£8

Theatr Bara Caws present

Hogia Ni — Yma O Hyd Tue 22 — Thu 24 Mar 8pm (Please note this is a Welsh language production. There will be an English precis for every scene, so it is suitable for Welsh learners.) It’s 2014, and her Majesty’s Armed Forces have finally returned home from Helmand, Afghanistan. Three former soldiers meet in the Alex, Caernarfon. Iwan Jones, Diane Taylor and Telor Roberts have returned to civilian life, but little by little it becomes apparent that it is impossible for them to return to their former lives. The nightmare experience of being on the front line never goes away. Plato’s words, “Only the dead have seen the end of war”, are as relevant as ever. £12/£10/£8

Our Brand Is Crisis

A Bigger Splash

Fri 26 Feb — Thu 3 Mar

Fri 26 Feb — Thu 3 Mar

USA/2015/107mins/15. Dir: David Gordon Green. With: Sandra Bullock, Billy Bob Thornton, Anthony Mackie, Zoe Kazan.

Italy/2015/120mins/15. Dir: Luca Guadagnino. With: Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Dakota Johnson, Matthias Schoenaerts.

A battle-hardened American political consultant is brought back from retirement after a scandal to help re-elect a controversial president in Bolivia, where she must compete with a long-term rival working for another candidate. A film that demonstrates what a serious, but sometimes fun business politics can be.

Rock star Marianne is recuperating after an operation on her vocal chords with her boyfriend, filmmaker Paul on a Mediterranean island, when her old flame Harry and his beautiful, petulant daughter Penelope pitch up at their villa unexpectedly. A simmering, provocative psychodrama ensues with romance, envy and amoral intrigue.

Trumbo Fri 19 Feb — Thu 3 Mar USA/2015/124mins/15. Dir: Jay Roach. With: Bryan Cranston, Diane Lane, Helen Mirren, Michael Stuhlbarg, Louis CK.

Dalton Trumbo was the screenwriter of many Hollywood classics and also one of the Hollywood Ten, consigned to the margins due to their supposed (and actual) Communist leanings in Cold War America. A gregarious, eccentric and passionate man, he refused to be cowed by the indictment that blighted his career. A wry story of resilience in absurd and dangerous times, this is a timely reminder about the necessity of fighting for what you believe in. Audio descriptions and soft subtitles available, please see the calendar for details.

Alphaville Sun 28 Feb + Tue 1 Mar France/1965/95mins/12A. Dir: Jean-Luc Godard. With: Eddie Constantine, Anna Karina, Akim Tamiroff.

A U.S. secret agent is sent to the technocratic dictatorship of Alphaville where he must find a missing person and free the city from its tyrannical ruler. Combining dystopian science fiction and film noir, Godard shot the film on the streets of Paris where modern brutalist architecture represented a new world. Ethiopia/2015/96mins/subtitles/ctba. Dir: Yared Zeleke. With: Rediat Amare, Kidist Siyum, Welela Assefa.

Japan/2015/128mins/subtitles/ctba. Dir: Hirokazu Kore-eda. With: Ayase Haruka, Nagasawa Masami, Kaho.

Set in the Ethiopian Highlands this is a delightful portrait of village life amongst subsistence farmers. Young Ephraim is left with his tyrannical uncle while his father looks for work. Alone in an unfamiliar world, Ephraim’s constant companion is his pet sheep, apparently destined for the pot. Simply told through the eyes of the boy, there’s more going on than initially appears. Though it’s a fiercely patriarchal society, it’s Ephraim’s lively grandmother Emama who reigns over the household. This charming story about growing up in a land where everyone is short of food has an undeniable ring of authenticity.

In the 1960s, Anwar Congo was a leader in Indonesia’s pro-regime paramilitary and participated in the murder and torture of more than a million alleged Communists, ethnic Chinese and intellectuals. Proud of their deeds and completely unpunished, Anwar and his friends delightedly use actors and elaborate sets to re-enact these murders for this documentary. Initially enthusiastic, as the movie violence is played out and reconstructed, Anwar finally begins to feel unease and remorse. + Join us for a post screening discussion.

In an isolated house a mother supports her husband and teenage son by washing sheets for local hotels. A workman and his daughter come to drill for water, to improve the inconsistent supply and the family is jolted out of their daily routine. A beautifully crafted film, focusing on the nonverbal elements of the relationships, this is an engaging, poetic character study that makes excellent use the surrounding landscape.

A cowboy working the rodeos around the back roads of Brazil, Iremar knows there’s more to life than his daily routine of bulls, dust and macho posturing. What he really likes doing is making glamorous dresses for his boss Galega. Beautifully shot to capture the rhythms of Iremar’s life, this beguiling, visually ravishing tale of sequins and sawdust overflows with vitality and sly humour, and upends conventional thinking about masculinity, sexuality, class and creativity.

Life is tough for Romani teenager Adam when his father is murdered and his menacing uncle Zigo marries his grieving mother without delay. But this Hamlet-inspired storyline is subtly different from Shakespeare’s plot. The icy hostility between the Gypsies and wider society is explored through brutal encounters with the police and hospital staff. While Uncle Zigo preaches his ruthless criminal code, Adam tries to find his own path. Trying to do the right thing for his family, he soon comes into conflict with the unwritten laws of his own community. A powerful and authentic tale of Romani life on the edge.

Shot in long takes in striking black and white, this beguiling fable explores the changing face of Tibet. Leaving the solitude of the high Himalayas behind, Tharlo, a simple shepherd has to go into town to get his ID photo taken. There he meets the vivacious Yangchuo, a thoroughly modern Tibetan who loves to smoke, drink and go karaoke singing. Smitten and disoriented, Tharlo returns to tend his sheep in the vast empty mountains but can’t forget the lure of a different life. Nyima’s compelling central performance brilliantly captures Tharlo’s confusion at his fateful first encounter with a new world. Winner Best Screenplay Golden Horse Festival 2015

What if confronting the climate crisis is the best chance we’ll ever get to build a better world? Based on her bestselling book, Naomi Klein argues that we can seize the crisis of climate change to transform our ecocidal economic system into something much better. By presenting seven powerful portraits of communities on the front line, Klein connects the carbon in the air with the economic system that put it there. It can often seem an overwhelmingly difficult task to repair our damaged world, but Klein gives hope that this can be done if we change our way of thinking — ‘system change not climate change’. + Join us for a panel discussion after the film.
