Welcome to our Cinema miniGuide for May. As always it’s a packed month with some great new releases and events, including the Before I Die Festival: Festival for the living about dying. We dip into the city-wide Diffusion photography festival (www.diffusionfestival.org) with a screening of Sleep Furiously by award winning director Gideon Koppel, which will be followed by a Q+A with the man himself and the cinema takes a trip to a rock club with the launch of Noys R Us. The end of the month sees the release of the long anticipated Great Gatsby a lavish rendering of the American novel, by popular director Baz Lurman. Changing doctors and medications in an attempt to find a cure, psychiatrist Jonathan Banks prescribes a new medication called Ablixa but the side effects of this drug have dangerous consequences. With no CGI used in the making, this gruesome long-time-in-thewaiting remake of Sam Raimi’s original video nasty The Evil Dead stays true to its master with the dream team of Raimi, Campbell and Tapert producing with their hand-picked Alvarez at the helm.

In this stylish, gut-wrenching thriller, Simon a fine art auctioneer is handling the sale of a Goya painting and becomes mixed up with a criminal gang to steal the multi-million pound artwork. After suffering a blow to the head during the heist he awakens to discover he has no memory of where he hid the painting. When physical threats and torture fail to produce answers, the gang’s leader Frank hires hypnotherapist Elizabeth Lamb to delve into the darkest recesses of Simon’s psyche. As Elizabeth begins to unravel Simon’s broken subconscious, the lines between truth, suggestion and deceit begin to blur.
Luke is in constant motion, as a motorcycle stunt performer travelling from town to town with the carnival. Passing through his home town he tries to reconnect with a former lover only to learn that in his absence she has given birth to their son Jason. Resolving to forsake life on the road to look after his family he is thrust into a new career as a bank robber by a sleazy new friend. But it is only a matter of time before Luke runs up against the law in the form of ambitious local cop Avery Cross and his corrupt boss. An ambitious thriller with a confident swagger and an enthralling score from Faith No More’s Mike Patton, this is a punchy follow up to director Cianfrance’s delicate drama Blue Valentine.

Life in a middle-class neighbourhood in Brazil takes an unexpected turn after the arrival of an independent private security firm. A bustling portrayal of modern day Brazil, this is a confident and highly anticipated debut from director Filho.
1945 was a pivotal year in British history with a postwar vision of a better society. Loach has created a rich political and social narrative using archive film of the period and contemporary interviews with those who remember those times, such as ex-Miner Ray Davies from Caerphilly and pioneering Valleys GP, Dr. Julian Tudor-Hart. This celebrates a period of unprecedented community spirit in the UK, the impact of which endured for many years and whose towering achievements such as the NHS are again under threat today. Steve Butler is an energy company salesman who enters a small town with hefty financial inducements to allow hydraulic fracturing (known as fracking) on their land. Coming from a rural background himself, he knows how much the town needs investment to maintain its way of life. Environmentalist Dustin Noble tries to warn the townspeople the damage that he sees it causing and Butler walks a tightrope of trying to do what is right whilst in the face being employed to do what is wrong. With outstanding performances, the increasingly versatile director Gus Van Sant keeps this from becoming a sentimental issue movie. + soft subtitled screening on Tue 7 May

We threw it open to the Bad Film Club panel and audience and so this month’s choice is this epic Swarthy Swayze kick ass zen action movie. Fights, hot nights and naked mediation come together in one steaming hot, high kicking movie.

Over the last 25 years, Michael Haneke has established himself as one of the most important directors in cinema history. From his early work to Amour, he has created a unique universe, revealing like no other the darkest corners of society, our existential fears and emotional outbursts. Through interviews with his actors, Isabelle Huppert, Juliette Binoche, Emmanuelle Riva as well as previously unseen footage and intimate dealings on the film set with the man himself, this film depicts the work of a rare artist.

Telling the story of Paul Raymond, the controversial entrepreneur whose talent for PR began with his turn as a mind-reader on Clacton, and saw him rise to become Britain’s richest man and the “Grandfather of Soho”. Despite notoriety for his interests in the adult entertainment industry, his life was built around three strong women and the film looks at how his success was mirrored by tragedy. A drama about how looks can be deceiving, this is another wonderful pairing of director Michael Winterbottom and star Steve Coogan who have worked together since 24 Hour Party People. + soft subtitled screening on Mon 13 May

The latest controversial film from writer-director Harmony Korine (Gummo, Kids) takes the subject of the hedonistic antics of four college girls on their way for the annual sun-sex-stimulants holiday ritual. The girls land in jail after robbing a restaurant in order to fund their fun and find themselves bailed out by a drug dealer who wants them to do some of his dirty work. This is a candy-coloured, blackhumour fuelled, fevered wet dream which turns into a nightmare.
Set in a small farming community in mid Wales, a place where Koppel’s parents — both refugees — found a home. This is a landscape and population that is changing rapidly as small scale agriculture is disappearing and the generation who inhabited a pre-mechanised world is dying out. Much influenced by his conversations with the writer Peter Handke, the filmmaker leads us on a poetic and profound journey into a world of endings and beginnings; a world of stuffed owls, sheep and fire. + Q&A with Director Gideon Koppel

Julian and Nicolas, two priests and long-standing friends, work tirelessly to help the local people in the “Villa Virgin”, a shantytown in the slums of Buenos Aires. Nicolas joins Julian in overseeing the construction of a hospital in the area, following the failure of a project he was leading in the jungle. Deeply troubled, he finds a little comfort in Luciana, a young, attractive, atheist social worker. As Nicolas’ faith weakens, tension and violence between the slum drug dealing cartels grow. This is a bold examination of the real meaning of sacrifice and servitude, with a soaring soundtrack by Michael Nyman.

Ellis and his friend Neckbone find a grimy drifter named Mud hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. Mud’s stories of vengeful men on his tail and his childhood sweetheart waiting for him seem like fantasies but bring colour and romance to their humdrum lives. Sceptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him but it isn’t long until Mud’s visions come true and their small town is besieged by a beautiful woman with some bounty hunters in tow. A beautifully shot coming of age tale told with fine performances from the young cast and a reminder of the talents of McConaughey and Witherspoon.

Don McCullin is one of the legendary names in photo journalism, particularly for his indelible gutwrenching war photos, but also for his work on humanitarian crises such as the famine in Biafra. Responsible for the photos in Antonioni’s Blow Up, he worked first on the Observer and then for many years on the Sunday Times, McCullin’s harrowing images drawn from headlines and conflicts around the world earned him both many awards, but also the disapproval of governments around the world as he sought to expose the atrocities that frequently followed in the wake of armed conflicts. This moving documentary, covering McCullin’s entire career, is not for the easily shocked, but while the images themselves are haunting, it is the lengthy interview with the man himself about a lifetime capturing atrocities committed by his fellow man which makes for the most moving viewing. The screening on Sat 18th May will be introduced by Richard Sambrook, Professor of Journalism and Director of the Centre for Journalism at Cardiff University, former Director of Global News at the BBC

When an introverted teenager tells his parents he’s going on a ski trip he instead spends the money on provisions and holes up alone in the basement of the family’s apartment building with music, books, an ant farm and an active fantasy life for entertainment. But when his heroin-addicted older half-sister Olivia crashes into his hideout needing a place to go cold turkey, his carefully planned isolation is destroyed. Bertolucci’s consideration of the turmoil of youth is his first feature in almost a decade and his skill as an elegant craftsman remains.

Luhrmann’s long-awaited adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Long Island-set novel is set to be a lavish extravaganza as you’d expect from the director of Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet. Midwesterner Nick Carraway is lured into the extravagant world of his neighbour Jay Gatsby but soon enough Carraway will see through the cracks of Gatsby’s nouveau riche existence, where obsession, madness, and tragedy await.
This frank and shocking documentary by the Israeli director Moreh features interviews with six surviving former heads of Shin Bet, the Israeli security agency established in 1949 to lead on counter-terrorism and intelligence gathering. Having spent their working lives in the grey areas of the morality of national security, now for the first time they speak with surprising bluntness about the black and white world of the politics of conflict. It’s not essential to be familiar with the modern history of the Middle East to fully appreciate the magnitude of the insight we’re being given.

But against the highly pressured backdrop of presidential elections in France, the stakes are high and all bets are off. Chapter is delighted to be a festival partner in Diffusion — a new biennial international photography festival. As part of the festival, our Gallery hosts Maurizio Anzeri’s first solo exhibition in Wales, featuring a selection of his critically acclaimed ‘photosculptural’ pieces. Art in the Bar meanwhile, welcomes artist Emma Bennett’s hauntingly beautiful paintings that reference the darker side of still-life’s long tradition, and Mike Tooby will re-examine Edouard Manet’s famous painting Un Bar aux FoliesBergere (1882). Over at the Stiwdio Gideon Koppel’s film installation BORTH captures the curious west Wales town and follows on from his feature-length film Sleep Furiously (2009). The end of the month brings the Diffusion publishing weekend (25/26 May) plus many events and activities for all the family. The month of May begins with Mercury Theatre Wales’ production Spangled, which re-visits the pulsating world of Welsh clubbing c.1993. It also sees the 5th Birthday of Newsoundwales with performances from 5 great acts. From the sublime to the freakish, you are invited by Tin Shed Theatre to revel in the delights of Dr Frankenstein’s Travelling Freak Show. Wednesday 15 May sees the Savage Children Double Bill. Make a night of it and watch both performances for the double bill price of £10/£8. Sioned Huws returns to Chapter with her Aomori Project, started in 2008 in response to the Arctic conditions of Northern Japan. Featuring music, performance and dance exchanges, the project is constantly evolving. Offsite, Reverie takes to the streets of Cardiff Bay, where participants will partake in roaming theatre, street gaming and online storytelling. For our younger audience, why not close the month with Magic Doors a theatre event produced by Bombastic that will reveal extraordinary creatures and make-believe worlds?
