Welcome

We love May here at Chapter; Art Car Bootique (p6-7) on Sunday 24 May turns our everyday car park into a fabulously quirky village fete, crammed with art, fashion, performance, food and live music, while our annual Maibock festival (p10) coincides nicely, to welcome in the summer. While we roll up our sleeves and get ready for a busy month, we know that none of this would be possible without our wonderful volunteers. They’re a fantastic bunch of people, who come from all walks of life, who share one thing in common — they’re passionate about Chapter and what we do, love new experiences and welcoming people to the building. Our volunteers help us with all sorts of events and activities, and make a vital contribution to the work that we do. In return, we offer lots of great opportunities — to see theatre performances and film screenings, to receive training and, most importantly of all, to become part of the Chapter community. We’re currently looking for new volunteers, so if you think you’d like to join the team, please see our website or contact philippa.brown@chapter.org for an application form. The closing date is 5pm, Friday 22 May. Good luck!

Richard Woods, Inclosure Acts, 2015.

chapter.org

Richard Woods: Inclosure Acts Fri 10 Apr — Sun 14 June Richard Woods has built an international reputation for his signature architectural transformations, paintings and sculpture that fold the history of the decorative arts, functional design and graphic language into intoxicatingly witty plays with image and surface. His architectural interventions are chiefly concerned with the re-surfacing of existing structures, proposing an absurd twist on the cult of home improvement and DIY aesthetics. For Chapter, Woods has created ‘Inclosure Acts’ a new work that is inspired by both the history of the building — sited as it is on a former cattle market — and by the Acts (1604-1914) that radically transformed open fields and common land in the countryside. Wall-based works reference the suburban in a series of monoprints. Based on hard-edged renditions of Mock Tudor decoration, the paintings are suburbia meets Neo Geo — the past made future. In the Caffi Bar Woods’ works ‘Bad Bricks’ are beautifully simple sculptures made from wood and resembling cartoon bricks. Their vibrant colours, bright white mortar and thick black edges offer a joyous celebration of the most mundane of building materials.

Exhibition open: Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 12–6pm; Thursday & Friday 12–8pm; closed Monday

Biography Richard Woods was born in 1966 in Cheshire, UK and was educated at Winchester School of Art and Slade School of Fine Art. He lives and works in London. In autumn 2014 Chapter collaborated with Woods to produce ‘Cardiff Rebuild’ a work in the grounds of Cardiff Castle as part of Cardiff Contemporary. Woods has exhibited extensively internationally and significant recent projects include major commissions at the University of Bath (2014); A Maze for Yorkshire, Wakefield (2013); Public Art Fund and Lever House, New York (2010) and collaborations on a wide range of furniture with Established & Sons. Woods has work in major collections internationally including The Saatchi Collection, London; Frank Cohen Collection, Manchester / Wolverhampton and Jumex Collection, Mexico. He is represented by Works I Projects. With thanks to The Alan Cristea Gallery, London.

Talk at 2 Sat 9 + Sat 23 May 2pm Our ‘Talks at 2’ are on every other Saturday during exhibitions and are hosted by our artist Live Guides Richard Higlett and Thomas Williams. They provide an opportunity to discover more about the current exhibition and the artists’ approach to making art. No two talks are the same, while we hope they’re always insightful and open. Talks at 2 are free of charge and there’s no need to book in advance — just turn up at the Gallery and join in! FREE

Intangible Studio presents

Spring, Autumn, Summer, Winter: Pop-Up Love Party Fri 29 + Sat 30 May 9.30pm From the team that brought last year’s International Performance Festival Cardiff is a new group show performance specially created for Chapter. Featuring the work of pioneering theatre company Zuppa Theatre (Halifax, Nova Scotia), Shirotama Hitsujiya (Artistic Director of Yubiwa Hotel, Tokyo, Japan) and local theatre-makers Valmai Jones and James Tyson, Spring, Autumn, Summer, Winter: Pop-Up Love Party is a a philosophical feast: a theatre show accompanied by a 7-course taster menu created by Michelin starred New York chef Daniel Burns. The occasion? To reflect on philosophy and raise a glass to love in the 21st century. A reimagining of Plato’s Symposium (The Drinking Party) in which a group of leading public figures got together to eat, drink and think about a mysterious thing: erotic love. The performance develops from a series of questions: What is space? Where do we find space for thinking within all the complexities of everyday life?

Plato hated theatre because he thought its focus on visceral experience was a distraction from serious contemplation. Spring, Autumn, Summer, Winter: Pop-Up Love Party wonders if both things can happen simultaneously. Can emotional and sensory experience actually inspire deep thought? £15 (to include seven-course taster menu and wine) Spring, Autumn, Summer, Winter: Pop-Up Love Party is produced by James Tyson/Intangible Studio with Zuppa Theatre (Halifax) in collaboration with the National Arts Centre (Ottawa). The performance has been made possible through the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, Arts Council of Wales and the Japan Foundation.

The mother dough brings new friends into Nettie’s life; Maggie the shepherdess, wild and free, Mair the Vicar, upright like a head stone but soft as the very dough. Annabel the estate agent, so well turned out and little Lara, pregnant at 16 left holding the baby. Through Nettie’s wish to find herself, these individuals all come to the table to make bread with her. ‘So by inventing the white sliced bread how did that liberate us?’ The table — our universe where the crust is broken, love is shared, tears are shed, laughter rings and secrets told. Lambert and Stamp

USA/2014/132mins/15. Dir: Brett Morgen.

UK/2015/117mins/15. Dir: James D. Cooper.

An absorbing collection of rare archive material and interviews with those who knew him best combines to create a portrait of a reluctant music legend. We see how a happy childhood was halted by his parents’ divorce, triggering a tailspin only appeased when he found an outlet in music until his conflicting feelings about his talent and celebrity became too much to handle.

This is the remarkable tale of Chris Stamp and Kit Lambert, aspiring filmmakers who set out to find a subject for their film. Their quest led them to discover, mentor and manage The Who, fuelling the band’s artistic development and leaving an indelible impression on generations to come. Featuring interviews with iconic personalities who have survived to tell their stories and incredible footage of the band and the mod movement in its heyday.

UK/2015/102mins/15. Dir: Carol Morley. With: Maisie Williams, Maxine Peake, Greta Scacchi.

Sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, an elderly Jewish woman, Maria Altmann, starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt’s famous painting ‘The Lady in Gold’. Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer Randy Schoenberg, she embarks upon a major battle which takes them all the way to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court, and forces her to confront difficult truths about the past along the way.

In 1969 best friends Lydia and Abbie have cultivated their own private world in the midst of the pent-up atmosphere of a buttoned up English girls’ school. Lydia’s fixation on her friend is a welcome distraction from her frustrating agoraphobic mother. Abbie is the centre of her fragile world but when tragedy strikes things begin to fall apart and a mysterious fainting epidemic overtakes the school.

What is consciousness? That’s the question troubling Hilary, a young researcher at a brain science institute. After all, if everything is matter, the advance of technology means that the computer and fMRI scanner will one day be able to answer all the questions currently addressed by psychology. It’s this ‘hard problem’ that brings her into conflict with her colleagues including her mentor Spike, her boss Leo and the institute’s billionaire founder, Jerry. Tom Stoppard’s eagerly anticipated new play explores some of the deeper questions at the outer limits of scientific endeavour.

NT Live: Man and Superman Thu 14 May Encore: Mon 25 May UK/2015/240mins/12A. Dir: Simon Godwin. With: Ralph Fiennes.

A serious revolutionary and wealthy bachelor Jack Tanner becomes the reluctant guardian to a charming heiress named Ann. Rejecting the attentions of a poet, she decides to marry the suitably aghast Tanner. Naturally, he opts to flee to Africa instead, only to be captured by bandits. What follows is an extraordinary dream-debate about Heaven and Hell with the Devil himself with Ann in hot pursuit. A dazzling reinvention of George Bernard Shaw’s philosophical fairy tale, this is a satirical romantic comedy.

As part of our series inspired by World War I, we examine the impact that conflict has on those at home whilst war continues at a distance. We pose questions of how war is seen by families of all kinds.

Good Kill

Timbuktu

USA/2014/102mins/15. Dir: Andrew Niccol. With: Ethan Hawke, January Jones, Zoë Kravitz.

France/2014/97mins/subtitles/12A. Dir: Abderrahmane Sissako. With: Ibrahim Ahmed, Toulou Kik, Abel Jafri, Fatoumata Diawara.

Air Force Major Thomas Egan is a talented pilot, but spends his days operating a drone over various terrorist threats in the Middle East while sitting in a trailer on a base in Las Vegas. As the CIA dictates orders to Egan and his crew, he begins to feel morally disconnected from his job and his family life suffers. An exploration of the dehumanising effect of modern warfare and the psychological implications for those at home, with a powerful central performance.

Beautifully filmed against the backdrop of stark desert landscapes and the sparkling river, this is a lucid portrait of the impact foreign jihadi occupation has on everyday life in Timbuktu. We hear the stories of a Muslim who plays desert blues, a farmer and a liberal Imam, as they adjust to living with oppression. A caustic sense of the absurd makes this subtle sense of clashing cultures both funny and petrifying.

Mon 11 — Thu 14 May

A Royal Night Out Fri 15 — Thu 28 May

UK/2015/97mins/12A. Dir: Julian Jarrold. With: Sarah Gadon, Emily Watson, Rupert Everett.

On V.E. Day in 1945, Princess Margaret and her sister Elizabeth were granted permission to leave Buckingham Palace for the night to celebrate. Based on true and previously untold events, this heartwarming story looks at two teenage girls looking for romance and danger but trying to avoid a scandal.

The Good Lie Fri 15 — Thu 21 May

Kenya/2014/110mins/12A. Dir: Philippe Falardeau. With: Reese Witherspoon, Arnold Oceng, Ger Duany.

Orphaned by the brutal civil war in Sudan, four young victims travel on foot in search of safety, finally resettling in the USA, where their encounter with employment counsellor Carrie changes their lives. Using four refugees rather than actors to tell the story (two of them former child soldiers) this is a heart-warming, true story of survival.

Fri 29 May — Thu 4 June

Rosewater

Fri 29 May — Thu 4 June USA/2014/103mins/15. Dir: Jon Stewart. With: Gael Garcia Bernal, Kim Bodnia, Dimitri Leonidas.

In 2009, journalist Maziar Bahari was detained in Iran for 118 days because he conducted a satirical interview which discussed the country’s presidential election. His inquisitor, nicknamed Rosewater for the cologne he wears, interrogated him daily over the course of four months, attempting to force a confession to a dizzying range of crimes including being a Zionist and appearing on The Daily Show. Adapted from Bahari’s memoirs, Stewart presents a Kafkaesque and telescopic drama that suggests that a regime incapable of tolerating humour is capable of tyranny. Ukraine/2014/130mins/silent without surtitles/18. Dir: Miroslav Slaboshpitsky. With: Grigoriy Fesenko, Yana Novikova, Rosa Babiy.

Jerry is a seemingly normal man trying to succeed in his new job, living with his dog, Bosco, and his cat, Mr. Whiskers. Yet something seems off. Jerry meets Fiona and excitedly goes home to tell his pets about her. Surprisingly, they answer and thus lead us to an insanely bizarre and wickedly subversive comedy. + Join filmmaker and horror fan Ben Ewart-Dean after the screening on Fri 15 May for an informal lecture and discussion around the themes of the film and the horror genre.

Set in a crumbling state boarding school for deaf adolescents new student Sergey is inducted into a world of teenage gangs, sex and crime. Negligent teachers have abandoned their students to a brutal, selfgoverning world where the violent bullies are the rulers. This is a challenging, compelling and highly original film, presented without subtitles and very little sound, only sign-language, echoing the confusing, misunderstood and often alienating silent world of the students.

‘I can’t stop thinking about it… What an intriguing film’ Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Something Must Break Tue 19 + Wed 20 May Sweden/2014/82mins/subtitles/18. Dir: Ester Martin Bergsmark. With: Saga Becker, Iggy Malmborg, Shima Niavarani.

In Stockholm self-abusive Sebastiane is looking for love in all the wrong places, struggling with androgyny and a desire to identify as a woman when he is rescued from a fight by Andreas. The two strike up an intense relationship during the summer, despite Andreas’ insistence that he is straight, but can it last? A gritty, beautifully shot story about love seeing through the gender binary.

A bewitching, complex drama about Maria, a diva actress whose career is on the wane, her smart devoted personal assistant Valentina and Jo-Ann, a young actress sizzling with confidence, eager to take Maria’s crown. When I’m not out and about visiting exhibitors across Wales, I can be found tucked away in the Chapter Cinema department planning our next slate of Film Hub supported projects. We work in partnership with Chapter and a host of cinemas, arts centres, community venues, societies, festivals and wider film practitioners throughout Wales — with the aim to expand film choice for audiences. I’ve worked with Film Hub Wales since the initiative launched in September 2013 and some of my highlights include a showing of silent film, Nosferatu (1922) with live organ accompaniment by Father Richard at St. Mary’s Church, Hay-On-Wye and Chapter’s ‘pop-up’ cinema nights with CADW & USW at Caerphilly Castle and Castell Coch. This month, I’m really looking forward to seeing the The Rumble-O’s perform a live score to the 1966 surfing documentary, Endless Summer - a sun, sea and surf treat on the big screen!

With spring finally sprung what better way to celebrate the season than greased muscles, 80s action and a tie in toy franchise? The Bad Film Club presents...Masters of the Universe. He-Man and his comrades arrive on Earth and with a little help from his friends (Corteney Cox, get it) and a magic cosmic Key they must fight the evil Skeletor and his army of villains. “Can you believe they actually made this?” — just one of the comments from film fans after watching this badly dated stinker. Bikes vs Cars

Above all Else

Sweden/2015/90mins/subtitles/ctba. Dir: Fredrik Gertten.

USA/2015/95mins/ctba. Dir: John Fiege.

Earth’s resources and much of the planet’s surface is consumed by the car and the ever-growing, dirty, noisy traffic that ensues. The bike is a great tool for change, but those who gain from the private car invest billions each year on lobbying and advertising to protect their business. In the film we meet activists and thinkers who are fighting for better cities, who refuse to stop riding despite the increasing number killed in traffic. + Join us for an introduction from Bike Shed Cardiff

One man risks family and future to stop the tar sands of the Keystone XL pipeline from crossing his land. Shot in the forests, pastures, and living rooms of rural East Texas, we follow David Daniel, a retired high-wire artist, as he rallies neighbours and environmental activists to join him in a final act of brinkmanship; a tree-top blockade of the controversial pipeline. What begins as a stand against corporate bullying becomes a rallying cry for climate protesters nationwide.

We cross the globe in search of the perfect wave in the ultimate surfing adventure. From the uncharted waters of West Africa, the shark-filled seas of Australia, to the tropical paradise of Tahiti and beyond, these Californian surfers accomplish in a few months what most people never do in a lifetime: they live their dream. A timeless masterpiece that continues to capture the imagination of every new generation.

Since 2010, Jean Hill has been spearheading a grassroots campaign to ban the sale of plastic bottles in her hometown of Concord, Massachusetts. As she prepares for one last town meeting, she faces the strongest opposition yet from local shopkeepers, right-wing media pundits and the International Bottled Water Association. In the same town that incited the American Revolution, can one little old lady make history?
