Welcome Croeso Chapter’s Director Janek Alexander and team. Just £50,000 still to raise.

Next Chapter News • Newyddion Chapter Nesaf Open for the final countdown It’s the final countdown… (OK so how many of you are singing already?). The changes are really beginning to show now and it’s just weeks before the work installing the glass for the stunning, new lightbox to the façade of the building will begin. If you’ve walked past recently you’ll probably have noticed that the huge metal structure for the lightbox is already in place and just looking at the beams gives a good impression of how it will finally look. After an open call to artists we’ll shortly be able to announce who will be the first person to have their work featured in the lightbox. There’s been a great response from artists living and working all over Wales so keep an eye on our website (www.chapter.org), become a fan on facebook (www.facebook. com/chapterarts) or start following us on twiiter (@chaptertweets) for the announcement.

There’s still lots to do and there’s the inevitable array of last minute glitches, panics and problems (sorry challenges). The current one is our beautiful, new oak floor. It’s all ready to lay but the moisture content in the screed is too high. All this rain has scuppered us a bit and not a barbeque summer in sight. Anyway for those of you who don’t know what a screed is, it’s “an accurately leveled strip of material laid on a wall or floor as a guide for the even application of a covering”. Good. So now you’re up to speed with screed. We’re doing all we can this end but keep your fingers crossed for some dry, hot weather and a bit of good luck. Our café-bar and box office have been installed but it’s difficult to get across in words how sensational (and big) the bar is, so have a look at our photoblog on the homepage of our website. Our new signage is in the hands of the planning department so fingers crossed for that too and thanks for all your comments which really helped us get things right.

We need your help. At the end of August/beginning of September we’ll be conducting some research on internal signage and wayfinding. It will probably mean donning a hard hat and a hi-vis jacket and looking at mock-ups of signage throughout the building. If you’re interested in taking part just email carol.jones@chapter.org or ring 029 2031 1060 and we’ll get in touch about when and what etc. Our fundraising campaign has been a huge success and there’s just £50,000 left to raise from our £3.8M target. Your support has been key to every penny but if you’ve been thinking about adopting a seat, brick or builder or investing in one of our limited edition prints this is the time to do it. There’s all the usual information on page 9. We’ve installed the first batch of plaques and they look rather grand nestling on the backs of our new seats. There’s a photo on page 9 or look enviously at them when you next come to watch a film. Not long now…

Theatre Theatr Tanja Råman (image: John Collingswood)

The Theatre Reopens The main Chapter building won’t be reopening for another month or so but we’re now ready to open the doors to our fully accessible main theatre space, complete with new comfortable seats! During September, entry to the theatre will be via the current temporary entrances — just follow the signs. We’re also looking forward to opening the newly designed theatre foyer in October. Fri 4 + Sat 5 Sept • 8pm • Gwe 4 + Sad 5 Medi

Tanja Råman and dbini industries Traces Capitalising on the strengths of their long-term collaboration, award–winning choreographer Tanja Råman and visual/sound artist John Collingswood (dbini industries) have created their most adventurous production to date. For traces, Tanja and John have joined forces with sound artist Jon Ruddick from the S.A.A.B Collective to explore the notion of memory. How do we determine what becomes a memory, or what gets forgotten

over time? Is it possible to choose a moment to preserve forever? To what extent are our memories manipulated by the way we wish to remember them? In this beautifully crafted, dark and thrilling performance, Tanja combines smoothly flowing movement, sudden dynamic changes and highly athletic expression. The hypnotic electronic soundtrack is created by the manipulation of sounds generated by the performers,

while video projection, drawing and live photography capture fleeting memories of the choreography and sonic environment. £10/£8/£6

Faction Collective The Censor by Anthony Neilson

by Patrick Jones

“And the people we dare to call perverts and deviants — the victims of this war — the good humane people we’ve criminalised and traumatised, they’ll be recognised for what they truly are: Visionaries!” From the company that brought last year’s sell-out Revelation by Patrick Jones, Faction Collective present another explicit and urgent drama from one of the UK’s most acclaimed contemporary playwrights. The Censor follows a gripping encounter between a female pornographic filmmaker and the man who holds the licensing scissors. The play unfolds as a moving parable of the artist and critic as a healing and finally tragic love story. Directed by Chris Durnall. Performed by Julie Barclay, Stacey Daly and Nathan Sussex. Contains scenes of a strong sexual nature.

Michael Kelligan and his team celebrate the beginning of their 5 Years and Still Talking season with this moving new play by Patrick Jones. Rachel, Mary and old Mrs Hartson are content to let their lives slip away gently… but it’s not that simple. Earnest is determined to go down fighting. In fact he’s determined not to go down at all and his rumbustious ‘carryings on’ begin to cause mayhem in the Hospice! Directed by Allan Cook. With Micheal Kelligan as Earnest. £3 (on the door)

It’s not too late to adopt

Limited Edition Prints

This month is your last opportunity to adopt one of our precious builders or bricks as we embark on the final stages of the redevelopment. The builders are working hard to hit those deadlines so they’re even more in need of Lucozade and Yorkie bars for energy during the final flourish. And the last few unwanted bricks have been heard crying in their skip late at night. Please help to give them the support they deserve. Adopt a Seat will continue and, for those of you who have already been through the simple adoption process, your plaque has been attached to your seat (see above) and is ready for you to enjoy. The October magazine will contain information on new and exciting ways in which you can continue to support us. The first stage of our redevelopment may be coming to an end but we will still need your support to allow us to plan an exciting and eclectic mix of work in the new space. To claim your last chance brick or builder, or adopt one of our new seats, call the Box Office on 029 2030 4400 or visit www.chapter.org

Our limited edition prints from celebrated artists James Aldridge, Pete Fowler, Heather and Ivan Morison and Joanna Quinn are still available with all proceeds going towards the redevelopment. All four prints are displayed just inside the entrance to our temporary Caffi Bar Chapter. Each print costs just £100 (unframed) or you can buy a set of all four for £350. We also offer an easy payment system allowing you to spread the cost. You can buy online at www.chapter.org, by phoning us on 029 2030 4400 or just pop in. Postage and packing within the UK costs £7.50. Postcard versions of the prints are now available from the Shop and are priced at £3.50 for a set of four. Assembly: Art in the Bar • Cynulliad: Celf yn y Bar Tim Freeman — On Returning Fri 7 August — Sun 20 September • Gwe 7 Awst — Sul 20 Medi Tim Freeman’s recent lens-based works reference the poetry and tragedy of ‘Romantic’ painters such as William Blake, Caspar David Friedrich and John Constable and in doing so explore some of the contemporary debates surrounding the depiction of landscape in both photography and painting. The stunning black and white works in our Caffi Bar incorporate digital collage and printmaking to describe the multi-layered landscape around us. They

begin with the documentation of Freeman’s walks, through which he develops a ‘sketchbook’ of images: open landscapes, shifting cloud patterns, tree formations, light on water. The images are built up and manipulated, layer upon layer, to create a seamless landscape of contradictions: the urban and the rural; the fictitious and the real; the synthetic and the natural; the poetic gesture and the everyday.

Born in Canada and raised in the Yorkshire Dales Tim moved to Cardiff in 1998 to study an MA in Fine Art at UWIC. He was named Welsh Artist of the Year 2009.

Assembly: Art in the Bar • Cynulliad: Celf yn y Bar Artstation: TXT2 Chapter Thu 24 — Sat 26 September • Iau 24 — Sad 26 Medi For the final exhibition in the temporary Caffi Bar, we have invited Artstation to create a live interactive installation. Over the past year Artstation have been researching and exploring the use of technology as a way of interacting with and reflecting our environment. For this installation they’re inviting you to text your comments and thoughts to a mobile phone number. The information will be processed and projected onto the wall of

our Caffi Bar. The artwork will create a live tapestry of publicly generated content for other Chapter visitors to read, ignore or get involved with. The system provides a way of communicating ideas, poetry, memories, slogans, prepared texts, quick notes etc. It’s an opportunity for you to make comments about Chapter, things you have seen or done — your imagination is the limit. The mobile number will be projected as a footnote on the installation itself.

The software has been developed in association with Dr Ian Grimstead from Cardiff University and anthropologist Kath Williams of the University of Glamorgan. This project is supported by the Arts Council of Wales, UnLtd and Science Shops Wales of University of Glamorgan.

Sun 30 Aug + Tue 1 Sept Sul 30 + Maw 1 Medi

Fiona and Dom have a common passion for Latin Dancing. Teachers in a rural school by day, by night their lives abound with glorious dance competitions and the trophies they have accumulated over the years. However, one night their lives are turned upside down when they’re involved in a tragic car crash, as they avoid a man trying to commit suicide. While this sounds like the stuff of heavy drama, in the hands of lead actors/ directors Abel and Gordon (L’Iceberg), this is an optimistic, bright and humorous film, full to the brim with physical comedy, vivid colours, a little conversation and plenty of very clever dancing.

A much over-looked gem from director Jack Gold (The Naked Civil Servant). When John Morlar (Richard Burton), a man without enemies, is attacked by an unknown assailant and left in a coma, Inspector Brunel is puzzled. However, as he works to uncover Morlar’s past for clues he discovers a string of disasters and unsolved mysteries linked to his key witness...

Clay studies the relationship between a Danish film-maker and his Thai girlfriend, then, as the film shifts from black-andwhite to colour, embarks on a new narrative, following a mafia enforcer searching for his brother. Back by popular demand, this delicate and engrossing documentary explores a small hill-farming community in Trefeurig, mid Wales. It is a landscape that is changing rapidly as shops, schools, bus services and small-scale agriculture are vanishing and the last generation who inhabited a pre-mechanised world is dying out. What was once a community cut off from the world must now learn to adapt to modern times. This inspiring surf-doc chronicles a tumultuous 2-year period of competitive and cultural clashes in mid-Seventies Hawaii, as a small crew of Australians and South Africans set out to change the world of surfing. These young men (including World Champions-to-be Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew, Shaun Tomson and Mark Richards) risked everything to become the best surfers in the world. Their courage and vision began a cultural revolution that led to the birth of professional surfing and ultimately what has become today’s billiondollar surf industry. Featuring stunning archive footage, this is a genuinely fascinating story, even if you’ve never been near a surfboard in your life.

Finest Hour: Films By Humphrey Jennings Sun 6 + Tue 8 Sept Sul 6 + Maw 8 Medi UK/1939-1943/total 80 mins/U.

Humphrey Jennings is widely considered to be Britain’s greatest documentary director. To mark the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War we are screening these four short films which combine poetic observation with subtle yet intense national feeling. Spare Time A fascinating survey of leisure pursuits in 1939, focusing on the steel, cotton and coal workers of Sheffield, Manchester, Bolton and Pontypridd. Words For Battle Images of wartime Britain are accompanied by stirring passages of poetry and prose spoken by Laurence Olivier. The Silent Village The tragedy of the Czech village of Lidice — which was occupied and destroyed by the Nazis — is

re-enacted by a Welsh mining community. A sombre and gripping drama documentary. Listen To Britain An exhilarating montage of the sights and sounds of wartime Britain.

France/Italy/1965/110 mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Jean-Luc Godard. With Anna Karina, Jean-Paul Belmondo.

Godard called it the story of the “last romantic couple”, but this was also his spectacular farewell to the style and spirit of the Nouvelle Vague. Ferdinand abandons his wife and child to take off with Marianne, an old flame, on a crazy and eventually tragic adventure, involving fast cars, gangsters and a Mediterranean idyll. This is a truly romantic film, but one which, in the best romantic tradition, is also deeply self-aware and at times self-mocking. A great finale to the world of the New Wave.

Under the spell of an ancient Mayan curse which causes flesheating snakes to hatch in her stomach, a woman boards the train from Mexico to Los Angeles with just hours left to live… Suspense and surprises may be lacking, but if your hunger for bad film is as insatiable as these snakes’ desire for human flesh then it’s definitely worth sinking your fangs into! Please be aware that this film will be accompanied by irreverent DVD-style comedy commentary.

USA/1985/121 mins/partly subtitled/15. Dir: Paul Schrader. With Ken Ogata, Mashayuki Shionoya, Hiroshi Mikami.

One of Japan’s most celebrated writers, Yukio Mishima was an advocate of a return to medieval Japanese values, owner of a private army and a shameless self-promoter. On November 25th 1970 he committed an act that shocked the literary world. Covering the public, private and literary life of the flamboyant would-be samurai, Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) draws on his novels to tell this tale of an extraordinary life and perhaps even more incredible death. The film also features original music by Philip Glass and performances by the Kronos Quartet, while Roy Scheider gives an off-screen English narration. Screening thanks to ScreenLit Festival of Film, TV & Writing, Broadway, Nottingham.

Llygaid Sgwa ˆr gan Philip Wyn Jones Ganed Vincent Cassel ym Mharis ym 1966. Yn erbyn ewyllys ei rieni aeth yn actor ac ym 1994 daeth yn wyneb cyfarwydd ar y teledu fel cariad Nicole yn yr hysbysebion Renault Clio. Ym 1995 ymddangosodd yn ei drydedd ffilm, La Haine. Roedd yn un o dri llanc yn protestio yn erbyn plismyn treisgar. Enillodd y ffilm wobr yng Ngw ˆ yl Ffilmiau Cannes. Ym 1996 enillodd y gomedi L’Appartement wobr BAFTA. Mae Cassel yn ddyn busnes sy’n esgeuluso ei swydd oherwydd ei fywyd carwriaethol gyda thair merch, un ohonynt yn cael ei phortreadu gan Monica Bellucci. Priodon nhw yn ddiweddarach. Yn Elizabeth (1998) mae Cassel, fel Duc d’Anjou, yn uwch yn y cast na John Gielgud a Daniel Craig - ond yn is nag Eric Cantona! Roedd Le Pacte des Loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf, 2001) yn ffilm iasoer hanesyddol gydag elfennau o kung-fu, camp y mae Cassel yn gryn feistr arni. Yn yr un flwyddyn roedd Sur Mes Lèvres (Read My Lips) yn stori am ysgrifenyddes fyddar sy’n gallu darllen gwefusau a’r mân droseddwr sy’n ffurfio partneriaeth gyda hi er mwyn torri’r gyfraith. Roedd trydedd ffilm Cassel a Bellucci, Irréversible (2002), yn un ddadleuol. Mae cariad athro yn cael ei threisio ac mae’r athro a’i gyfaill yn dial ar y treisiwr. Mae’r ffilm yn dechrau yn y diwedd ac yn symud yn ôl mewn amser. Caiff y treisio a’r dial eu darlunio’n fanwl a bu sawl gwlad yn amau a ddylid dangos y ffilm o gwbl. Ym

Mhrydain dosbarthwyd y ffilm yn ei chyfanrwydd ond mae’r sensor wedi rhybuddio y gallai dorri’r DVD. Yn ôl Cassel, os yw hynny’n wir fydd y ffilm ddim yn cael ei rhyddhau ar DVD ym Mhrydain. Math o Western arallfydol yw Blueberry (2004) a seiliwyd ar gomic o Wlad Belg. Mae’n prysur dyfu’n gwlt ac yn destun cryn drafod ar y we. Mae Cassel yn portreadu Siryf Blueberry sy’n erlid y dyn a laddodd ei gariad. Dyma un o’i hoff ffilmiau. Ymddangosodd yn Ocean’s Twelve yn 2004 ac Ocean’s Thirteen yn 2007 a chael cyfle i arddangos ei sgiliau kung-fu eto. Trodd ei law at gynhyrchu yn 2006 gyda’r ffilm iasoer Sheitan (Satan). Yn 2007 daeth Eastern Promises, ffilm rymus a chyffrous wedi’i lleoli ym myd gangsters Rwsiaidd Llundain. Gwnaeth Cassel ymdrech arbennig i ddysgu Rwsieg ar gyfer chwarae rhan Kirill yn y ffilm hon. A dyma ddod at ei ffilm bwysicaf hyd yn hyn, Mesrine (2008). Cipiodd hon sawl César gan gynnwys un yr un i Cassel a’r cyfarwyddwr. Mae Cassel yn portreadu’r gangster erchyll Jacques Mesrine oedd yn dipyn o arwr gan y Ffrancwyr am iddo lwyddo i dwyllo a threchu’r awdurdodau gyhyd. Dangosir y ffilm mewn dwy ran: L’instinct de mort (Killer Instinct) a L’ennemi public no 1 (Public Enemy no 1). Oddi ar hynny mae Cassel wedi gwneud tair ffilm arall a mawr fydd y disgwyl amdanyn nhw hefyd. Mae Philip Wyn Jones yn olygydd ac adolygydd ar ei liwt ei hun.

From L to R: Mesrine: Part 2 — Public Enemy No 1, Three Miles North of Molkom

France/Canada/2008/114 mins/partly subtitled/15. Dir: Jean-Francois Richet. With Vincent Cassel, Mathieu Amalric, Ludivine Sagnier.

Following on from the scorching Mesrine: L’Instinct Du Mort, the concluding part of this epic story follows Jacques Mesrine in his rise to becoming France’s most notorious gangster. After a series of prison escapes and increasingly brutal crimes he moves from Paris to the US, Canada and Spain but is unable to leave his past, and the potential for notoriety, behind. Jean-Francois Richet’s double-header plays like a French take on De Palma’s Scarface but with a far murkier, more complex morality.

Three miles north of Molkom, hidden deep in the lakeside forests of Sweden, lies Angsbacka; a 21st Century playground for adults. Once a year, their gates open to a thousand international participants who take part in firewalking, shamanism, tantric sex and a myriad of other physical, psychological and esoteric experiences. Filmmakers Corinna Villari-McFarlane and Robert Cannan were given unrestricted access to the delights of the ‘One Mind Fest’ to create this entertaining and bittersweet documentary. A Swedish celebrity, a Californian hippy, a Finnish grandmother and an abrasive Australian rugby coach (who stumbled on the wrong party), are among the group searching for enlightenment, love and themselves. Will they ever be the same again?

The Yes Men Fix The World Fri 11 — Thu 17 Sept Gwe 11 — Iau 17 Medi USA/France/2009/90 mins/ctba. Dir: Andy Bichlbaum, Mike Bonanno.

Fixing the world one hoax at a time, Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno use their unique style of political activism to expose the people profiting from disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the environmental disaster in Bhopal. Posing as plausible corporate officials and gaining access to worldwide conferences and even CNN and Channel 4 news, the pair question why the world market dictates the direction of our society and do what the offending industries won’t and accept responsibility for their actions.

Mon 14 — Thu 17 Sept • Llun 14 — Iau 17 Medi UK/South Africa/2008/107 mins/12A. Dir Anthony Fabian. With Sophie Okonedo, Sam Neill and Alice Krige.

Based on the extraordinary true story of Sandra Laing, a black child born in 1950s South Africa to white Afrikaners, Skin traces their 30-year struggle to find acceptance in a society living under apartheid. Sandra was raised in rural isolation by her shopkeeper parents with no real perception that she was any different from them or her older brother Leon. But on her first day at boarding school, it’s immediately apparent that everyone else thinks she’s quite different indeed. She is examined by State officials, reclassified as ‘coloured’, and expelled from the school. Her parents are understandably shocked, and begin the fight to have the decision reversed. Sandra’s long journey from rejection to acceptance, betrayal to reconciliation, makes for a mesmerising story of family, forgiveness and triumph of the human spirit. Sophie Okonedo is outstanding as Sandra and is ably supported by Sam Neill and Alice Krige as the wellintentioned but often misguided parents.

“film-making of a very high order… I cannot recall a film that captures so well the textures of SA, South Africans and life under apartheid.” Simon Barber, Business Day, South Africa

Spain/128mins/2009/subtitled/15. Dir: Pedro Almodovar. With Penelope Cruz, Lluis Homar, Blanca Portillo.

Almodovar’s biggest budget offering so far dances between melodrama and comedy with a touch of noir, as he clearly enjoys playing with the conventions of film. Harry Caine is a screenwriter and director who changed his life and name after losing his sight in an accident. When he hears news of the death of the man who produced and ultimately destroyed his film “Girls and Suitcases”, he and his friends revisit this time in his life to uncover a bed of secrets and lies. With a labyrinthine, time-shifting plot, this is a thoroughly enjoyable ride through gloriously rich landscapes, witty dialogue and a host of cinematic references.

Germany/2008/92 mins/subtitled/18. Dir: Özgür Yildirim. With Denis Moschitto, Moritz Bleibtreu, Volkan Özcan

Street smart Chiko (Denis Moschitto) and his best friend Tibet (Volkan Ozcan) believe that money, power and respect are all that count in the suburban ghettos of Hamburg. Chiko uses his ruthless charm to win the trust and respect of the local drug lord Brownie and eventually becomes his right-hand-man. But, when Tibet steps out of line, Chiko finds himself in a dangerous situation. Everything they have dreamed of is at stake — their reputation, status and most of all, friendship. Produced by Fatih Akin (Head On, The Edge Of Heaven) and directed impeccably by debutant Ozgur Yildirim, this is an intense and forceful Turkish-German thriller which is drawing comparisons with Al Pacino’s classic Scarface.

USA/2009/146 mins/15. Dir: Judd Apatow. With Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Eric Bana, Jason Schwartzman.

Based on the best-selling novel by Audrey Niffenegger this romantic drama tells the tale of a Chicago librarian cursed with a rare genetic disorder that causes him to travel through time involuntarily to different periods within his own lifetime. Encountering this unpredictable stranger as she grows from childhood to maturity, Clare believes that they are destined to be together. But how do you build a life around a distant husband who literally disappears?

In Nazi-occupied France a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as “The Basterds” are hand-picked to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. When they cross paths with Shosanna, a French-Jewish girl who’s escaped the dastardly Colonel Hans Landa, they mastermind a plot to use her movie theatre to bring Hitler and the leaders of the German army to their knees. Christophe Waltz is mesmerising as the multilingual, inscrutable Landa and with the Tarantino geek-o-meter turned down low, Kruger, Fassbender and Roth are able to excel in this enjoyable, lavish and occasionally brutal romp.

Fri 25 Sept — Thu 1 Oct Gwe 25 Medi — Iau 1 Hyd

George Simmons is a gruff and seasoned 40-something stand up comedian with a level of success working the LA scene. When he learns of a possibly fatal health condition, he reassesses his well-honed distance from those around him and takes on a relatively new performer as his writer and potential friend. When he receives the news that he may well survive, George begins to experience life afresh and put all his efforts into saving the love of his life from her safe but flawed marriage. The Director of 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, Apatow succeeds in making an unsentimental, humorous and warmly engaging film and offers a behind the scenes insight into comedy club culture.

Telling the sensational story of legendary soul star Billy Paul, Am I Black Enough For You is also a portrait of the city of Philadelphia in the 1970s, which shows how the oppression of Afro-Americans and the civil rights movement gave rise to the birth of soul music. Taking its title from Paul’s follow-up single to ‘Me and Mrs Jones’, this poignant insight into the life and legacy of a genuine soul legend features exclusive, allaccess interviews with the man himself and key contemporaries, including his civil rights campaigning record executive Kenny Gamble. The film also incorporates wonderful, rarely-seen archive footage of the superstar in his prime.
