Paloma Varga Weisz: Spirits of my Flesh Fri 25 Nov — Wed 4 Jan • Gwe 25 Tach — Mer 4 Ion Preview • Blaenwelediad: Thu 24 Nov • 6-8pm • Iau 24 Tach Paloma Varga Weisz creates enduring and evocative works that recall folklore, contemporary media and art history. the hybrid forms that she fashions by this fusion of influences are reminiscent of our cultural history — be it mythical, religious or comic — and simultaneously encapsulate adult knowingness and youthful innocence; personal reference and collective memory; the familiar and the remarkable. Deeply rooted in the arts and crafts of the middle ages, Varga Weisz’s works embrace many of the intrinsic facets of its style and subject matter. for chapter she has moved away from her trademark ecclesiastical woodcarvings to produce works in ceramic that embrace the aesthetic instincts and influences of the arts and crafts movement. themes of bodily containment and deconstruction still remain current in these works. the slick, dynamic glaze seems to shift in such a way as to capture in each work a moment of metamorphosis or transformation — between sleep and death; male and female; real and unreal. this delicate balance between restraint and exaggeration is also felt in here watercolour paintings which reveal an immediacy and freedom that is equally captivating. almost ghostlike in their delicate appearance, the portraits seem to foreshadow the manifold stories still untold by paloma Varga Weisz. biography paloma Varga Weisz (born 1966) lives and works in Düsseldorf, germany. she has had solo exhibitions at, amongst others, sommer contemporary art, tel aviv (2009); gladstone gallery, new york and Konrad fischer galerie, berlin (both 2008); Douglas hyde gallery, Dublin (2006); berlin biennale (2006) and the 51st Venice biennale of art (2005). she was recently included in the folkestone triennial (2011) and has a major forthcoming exhibition at museum schloss morsbroich, leverkusen (2012). assembly: art in the bar Dave bain: red feather Fri 9 Dec — sun 5 Feb • gwe 9 rhag — sul 5 Chwef Dave bain’s illustrative works capture the energy and vitality of birds and draw on the many influences in his life, including his involvement with street art — hinted at by the drips of bright colour and boldness of line in his paintings. his detailed site-specific work for chapter reflects his obsession with pure drawing, continuous line, vibrant colour and simple structure playfully interwoven with complex patterns. red Feather is an exhibition structured around a landscape of stark, bare branches — typical of our british winter — with glimpses of robins scattered throughout to bring some welcome colour. striking, mischievous, and sometimes surprising, bain’s paintings capture the cautious glances and sudden movement of these feathered festive icons. biography Dave bain graduated from falmouth college of arts in 2006, and now lives and works in bristol. his work has appeared in various illustration annuals, zines and books as well as being sought after for commercial briefs and private commissions. he has worked for a wide range of clients, including nokia, nspcc, clarks, children in need, bbc and bfi. he has been commissioned to draw live at events from underground club nights to public-sector planning meetings. recent exhibitions include: flight, the glass room, colston hall, bristol; Deep into the Woods, start gallery, bristol (both 2011); grotesques, antlers gallery, bristol; play — inkygoodness, east gallery, london and Decked 2, coningsby gallery, london (all 2010). www.davebain.com

A message from our friends at Sherman Cymru We’d like to extend a big thank you to all at Chapter for playing host to a whole range of Sherman Cymru writing and artist development activity, and for providing a temporary home for our Youth Theatre and Sherman Sherbets groups during our extensive £5.4 million theatre redevelopment. Our theatre building in Cathays will be reopening in February and details of the spring/summer season can be found at www.shermancymru.co.uk. We’re extremely pleased that our relationship with Chapter will be ongoing as, due to popular demand, we’ll continue to run two Sherbets groups on a Saturday for children aged 4-9.

Diamond age & eddieladd.com cabaret songs sat 3 Dec • 8pm • sad 3 rhag a new restaging of Diamond age’s 1981 show, performed by Janek alexander (previous chapter Director), theatre, choreographic and performance artist eddie Ladd and guest jazz saxophonist Dave Perry (previously seen at chapter with gerald tyler and bristolbased group, limbo). this evening of virtuosic singing, arrangements and playing is scored around alexander’s tuneful pop songs about politics, society and happiness. from recordings made at the time of the falklands War, these are songs “from the old country”, a visceral and ironic look at the state of the nation in a show that innovatively updated the cabaret format for the 1980s. a welcome return of Diamond age and special guests to chapter. £10/£8/£6

Marega Palser combines her training in dance and fine art in this collaboration with three of Wales’ finest movement artists: Catherine bennett, belinda neave and rosalind brooks. marega is one half of Mr and Mrs Clark and an associate artist of Volcano theatre Company.

She has starred in a number of TV and Radio 4 comedies including Sarah Millican’s Support Group.

Woodstock born Linda Lamb, known for her work with Nina Hagen and Punx Soundchecks, will be making a rare appearance and Robin and Bina Williamson return to Chapter with their haunting mix of traditional and original folk. Direct from the Edinburgh Fringe and following on from his sell-out tour of ‘Uncaged Monkeys’, Robin Ince continues his comic exploration of the human condition in his new show ‘Happiness Through Science’ — an entertaining evening orienteering the craggy landscape of evolution, all without the aid of a safety net. And at 9pm, after all the science stuff, Robin performs a second show of his favourite bits and pieces from his work over the last few years. the utah bride by carmen medway-stephens Fri 16 + sat 17 Dec • 7.30pm • gwe 16 + sad 17 rhag 16-year-old alice lives in a small village where nothing ever happens. one day a mormon missionary knocks on the door and alice invites him in. she defies her Welsh methodist upbringing and runs away with him to live the american dream. four years later she arrives home to the wrath of her matriarchal mother. revelations, confessions and healing take place between a mother and daughter divided by religion, men and anger. often the worse war is the one at home, fought between knife and fork, table and chair. this play explores the meaning of home and family, and asks if the grass is greener on the other side. the utah bride is 1.618 theatre’s first full length play. these scriptin-hand performances will mark the culmination of an intensive week of development and exploration. £6/£5 (on the door) supported by the arts Council of Wales & sherman Cymru Literary Dept.

alternative theatre company assembly Women by elizabeth morgan Fri 13 + sat 14 Jan • 8pm • gwe 13 + sad 14 Ion too much testosterone in government and in the home has resulted in pointless wars, too many families bereaved, too many wounded forced to beg, spiralling taxes and a widening divide between rich and poor. by a stealthy coup d’etat, the government is put firmly in the hands of the women. equality, the sharing of wealth and possessions, is the objective, and now sexually free there is the promise of ‘pleasure for all’. elizabeth morgan’s new play is loosely based on a comedy by aristophanes. this script-in-hand performance will be followed by an open discussion on the possible advantages of having women in control. utopia or what? let’s hear what you think. £4

this beautifully realised film is based on owen sheers’ widely acclaimed novel which explores an alternative reality in which the D-Day landings have failed and the german army is marching across britain. When sarah lewis wakes up to find her husband has disappeared, she discovers that all of the men in their Welsh border valley have gone. filmed in the black mountains, this gripping portrait of a community under siege is also a moving story of love and friendship.

in 1964, Ken Kesey, fêted author of one Flew over the Cuckoo's nest, loaded a bus christened ‘further’ with pals and drugs and embarked on a journey from california to the World’s fair in new york which promised a 'World of tomorrow'. it was a year after the assassination of John f Kennedy, with cold War paranoia gripping the nation and the civil rights struggle resulting in armed clashes in some cities. alex gibney and alison ellwood have worked with three archival institutions to restore the mostly-unseen footage, creating this incredible document of a significant moment in american history. contemporary footage gives greater context to the trip, while the soundtrack, made up mostly of american pop before the beatles made an impact there, is irresistible.

the veteran surrealist Jan svankmajer introduces us to what he claims will be his final film. renowned for some of cinema’s most imaginative and humorously grotesque features, he continues this tradition with the story of evzen, a married man, bored of his job, who retreats into his dreams to live a double life with a beautiful woman. becoming addicted to these dreams, despite his visits to a highly unprofessional psychiatrist, he quits his job and rents a private room so that he can spend more time sleeping.

in post-war occupied Japan, young yoshihiro tatsumi’s passion for comics eventually becomes a means of supporting his poor family. already published as a teenager, talented tatsumi finds even greater inspiration after meeting his idol, animator osamu tezuka. Despite his steady success, tatsumi begins to question why Japanese comics should cater to children with cute and whimsical tales and drawings. in 1957, tatsumi coins the term gekiga (dramatic pictures) and redefines the manga landscape by encouraging an alternative genre for adults which grapples with the darker aspects of life.

Director phyllida lloyd (Mamma Mia!) works again with a transformed streep and brings together a stellar british cast including Jim broadbent as Denis and richard e grant as michael heseltine.

long distance truck driver rubén picks up a young mother carrying her eight-month-old son en route from paraguay to buenos aires and agrees to take them for a fee. as a man of few words, this is clearly going to be a long journey, despite her efforts to engage him. however, as the strained atmosphere gradually gives way to conversation and then to affection, there comes the growing suspicion that the guarded, gruff rubén may even be falling in love. owing a debt to the ‘slow cinema movement’, this is an enchanting and uplifting experience. Winner of several awards at 2011 Cannes Film Festival, including the prestigious Camera D’or.

Chapter is situated in Canton, behind Cowbridge Road East, between Llandaff Road and Market Road. We are easily accessible from the city centre. Overflow car parking is available after 6pm at Cardiff Community Learning Services adjacent to the car park at Chapter. Alternative nearby car parks are shown above. Number 17, 18 and 33 buses leave every five minutes from the City Centre. From the east on M4: Take exit 29 onto the A48; after 6 miles turn slight left onto A4119/ Mill Lane; then left onto Cardiff Road; continue straight onto B4267/Llandaff Rd; after 300m turn right onto Market Place; take next right onto Market Road; Chapter car park is on the right. From the west on M4: Take exit 33 and follow signs onto A4232; after 6.3 miles exit onto Leckwith Rd, towards the new Cardiff City Stadium; keep straight until turning left onto Cowbridge Road E; Market Rd is on your right; Chapter car park is on the right.
