Paloma Varga Weisz: Spirits of my Flesh Fri 25 Nov — Wed 4 Jan • Gwe 25 Tach — Mer 4 Ion Preview • Blaenwelediad: Thu 24 Nov • 6-8pm • Iau 24 Tach Paloma Varga Weisz creates enduring and evocative works that recall folklore, contemporary media and art history. the hybrid forms that she fashions by this fusion of influences are reminiscent of our cultural history — be it mythical, religious or comic — and simultaneously encapsulate adult knowingness and youthful innocence; personal reference and collective memory; the familiar and the remarkable. Deeply rooted in the arts and crafts of the middle ages, Varga Weisz’s works embrace many of the intrinsic facets of its style and subject matter. for chapter she has moved away from her trademark ecclesiastical woodcarvings to produce works in ceramic that embrace the aesthetic instincts and influences of the arts and crafts movement. themes of bodily containment and deconstruction still remain current in these works. the slick, dynamic glaze seems to shift in such a way as to capture in each work a moment of metamorphosis or transformation — between sleep and death; male and female; real and unreal. this delicate balance between restraint and exaggeration is also felt in here watercolour paintings which reveal an immediacy and freedom that is equally captivating. almost ghostlike in their delicate appearance, the portraits seem to foreshadow the manifold stories still untold by paloma Varga Weisz. biography paloma Varga Weisz (born 1966) lives and works in Düsseldorf, germany. she has had solo exhibitions at, amongst others, sommer contemporary art, tel aviv (2009); gladstone gallery, new york and Konrad fischer galerie, berlin (both 2008); Douglas hyde gallery, Dublin (2006); berlin biennale (2006) and the 51st Venice biennale of art (2005). she was recently included in the folkestone triennial (2011) and has a major forthcoming exhibition at museum schloss morsbroich, leverkusen (2012). Paloma Varga Weisz can also be seen at sadie Coles hQ, London between thu 12 Jan and sat 25 Feb 2012. assembly: art in the bar Dave bain: red feather Fri 9 Dec — sun 5 Feb • gwe 9 rhag — sul 5 Chwef Dave bain’s illustrative works capture the energy and vitality of birds and draw on the many influences in his life, including his involvement with street art — hinted at by the drips of bright colour and boldness of line in his paintings. his detailed site-specific work for chapter reflects his obsession with pure drawing, continuous line, vibrant colour and simple structure playfully interwoven with complex patterns. red Feather is an exhibition structured around a landscape of stark, bare branches — typical of our british winter — with glimpses of robins scattered throughout to bring some welcome colour. striking, mischievous, and sometimes surprising, bain’s paintings capture the cautious glances and sudden movement of these feathered festive icons. biography Dave bain graduated from falmouth college of arts in 2006, and now lives and works in bristol. his work has appeared in various illustration annuals, zines and books as well as being sought after for commercial briefs and private commissions. he has worked for a wide range of clients, including nokia, nspcc, clarks, children in need, bbc and bfi. he has been commissioned to draw live at events from underground club nights to public-sector planning meetings. recent exhibitions include: flight, the glass room, colston hall, bristol; Deep into the Woods, start gallery, bristol (both 2011); grotesques, antlers gallery, bristol; play — inkygoodness, east gallery, london and Decked 2, coningsby gallery, london (all 2010). www.davebain.com

uK/2011/91mins/pg . Dir: amit gupta. With: andrea riseborough, michael sheen, iwan rheon.

UK/2011/98mins/15. Dir: Jes Benstock. With Andrew Logan, Zandra Rhodes, Derek Jarman.

this beautifully realised film is based on owen sheers’ widely acclaimed novel which explores an alternative reality in which the D-Day landings have failed and the german army is marching across britain. When sarah lewis wakes up to find her husband has disappeared, she discovers that all of the men in their Welsh border valley have gone. filmed in the black mountains, this gripping portrait of a community under siege is also a moving story of love and friendship.

Sculptor Andrew Logan created ‘The Alternative Miss World’ costume pageant as a chance for the creative and outrageous to come together in a celebration of strangeness. A fascinating documentary told with flair in a glittering patchwork style.

The Ides of March Fri 18 Nov — Thu 1 Dec • Gwe 18 Tach — Iau 1 Rhag USA /2011/101mins/15. Dir: George Clooney. With George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ryan Gosling.

Stephen Myers is the ambitious press spokesman for Democratic hopeful Governor Morris. The ethical twists and turns of a life in politics are revealed when the campaign strategist for a rival candidate attempts to poach Myers over to his own camp, and Myers starts a clandestine relationship with a well-connected intern.

Wuthering Heights Fri 25 Nov — Thu 8 Dec • Gwe 25 Tach — Iau 8 Rhag UK/2011/130mins/15. Dir: Andrea Arnold. With Kaya Scodelario, James Howson, Nichola Burley.

Andrea Arnold (Red Road, Fish Tank) brings her bold direction to this tale of obsessive love and class division. A Yorkshire farmer finds a homeless boy on the streets and takes him to live as part of his family at their isolated farm. When the boy develops an all-consuming relationship with the farmer’s daughter, he provokes jealousy from her brother. While respectful of the original text, this is a radical interpretation with a breathtaking visual style which captures the bleak and beautiful nature of Yorkshire’s wild and windy moors.

a rare opportunity to see this archive film which inspired owen sheers to write resistance. two months after the nazis’ massacre of over 170 men in a czech mining village humphrey Jennings gained the co-operation of the south Wales miners’ federation and local pitmen to stage a bold re-enactment of the events in cwmgiedd.

+ Our Adaptations group meets after the screening on Mon 5 Dec to discuss the film and the book that inspired it.

respected documentarian errol morris follows standard operating Procedure with this rather different tale of imprisonment. in 1977 former miss Wyoming Joyce mcKinney was perfect tabloid fodder when she became the centre of the ‘manacled mormon’ case, an alleged kidnapping of her lover, whom she claimed she was trying to rescue from a cult. the intense gaze of morris’ camera leaves the clarity of all sides of the story a little murky and the truth as difficult to grasp as air. a timely look at whether the media is acting as a window to the world or a mirror, grossly distorting it.

terence Davies We’re celebrating the work of a man who is regarded by many as britain’s greatest living director by screening his latest film the Deep blue sea, alongside three other classics from his wonderful back catalogue.

the Deep blue sea Fri 9 — thu 29 Dec • gwe 9 — Iau 29 rhag uK/2011/98mins/12a. Dir: terence Davies. With rachel Weisz, tom hiddleston, simon russell beale.

terence Davies brings emotional sensitivity and flawless craftsmanship to his adaptation of terence rattigan's acclaimed play about the unreliable nature of love. the setting is london in the 1950s, a time of rationing and privation as britain struggles through the aftermath of the second World War. hester collier leads a privileged life as the beautiful wife of a high court judge, though theirs is a companionable rather than a passionate marriage. When hester meets a young ex-raf pilot she falls devastatingly in love with him and, to the shock of those around her, she leaves her marriage to live with him in shabby lodgings. but, as time passes, hester comes to realise that the dashing but damaged freddie is unable to return her all-consuming passion, just as she is unable to return her husband's love.

Distant Voices, still lives sun 4 + tue 6 Dec • sul 4 + Maw 6 rhag uK/1988/84mins/15. Dir: terence Davies. With freda Dowie, pete postlethwaite, angela Walsh.

set in a world before elvis, a liverpool before the beatles, this is a remarkable evocation of working-class family life in the 40s and 50s. in a powerful succession of searing vignettes, Davies paints an autobiographical picture of a family dominated by an oppressive patriarch. the women in the family achieve partial escape from his dominance through the popular songs of the period, provoking the idea of ‘a kind of musical’. terence Davies’ poetic masterpiece has acquired the status of a british classic and this restoration from the bfi national archive will enable a whole new audience to experience its visual beauty, life-affirming humour and extraordinary emotional power.

of time and the city sun 11 + tue 13 Dec • sul 11 + Maw 13 rhag uK/2008/72mins/12a. Dir: terence Davies.

Davies’ passionate and poetic documentary on his native liverpool is a heart-stirring meditation on time, memory and mortality. images of liverpool past and present are magically combined with a wonderfully rich selection of music (ranging from peggy lee to mahler, handel to the hollies), voices, radio clips, and the director’s own narration. the result is a powerful evocation of the director’s youth in post-war britain and a reflection on how his home city — and the world at large — have changed over the years.

the terence Davies trilogy sun 18 + tue 20 Dec sul 18 + Maw 20 rhag uK/102mins/15. Dir: terence Davies.

made over a period of some seven years, this trilogy spans the period from Davies' earliest work as a filmmaker through to his emergence as one of the outstanding british directors of his generation. together, the three films chart the life and death of robert tucker, brought up — like Davies himself — in a catholic working-class home in liverpool. robert is bullied at school and has a violent father who dies while the boy is still young. as an adult, he struggles with his homosexuality, and the feelings of guilt and shame induced by his sexuality are sharpened by his catholicism. the trilogy contains: Children (1976/46mins); Death and transfiguration (1983/26mins); and Madonna and Child (1980/30mins).

llygaid sgwâr gan philip Wyn Jones Dau Terence sydd dan sylw y tro hwn. Ganed y cyfarwyddwr ffilmiau Terence Davies yn Lerpwl ym 1945 a dechreuodd gyfarwyddo ffilmiau ym 1976. Mae nifer o’i ffilmiau yn hunangofiannol gan gynnwys y tair ffilm fer sy’n ffurfio’r Terence Davies Trilogy a’r ddwy ffilm nodwedd Distant Voices, Still Lives a The Long Day Closes. Lerpwl yn y 1940au a’r 1950au yw’r cefndir a phortread o’r ddinas honno a geir yn ei ffilm ddogfen Of Time and the City. Cefndir Americanaidd sydd i The Neon Bible a House of Mirth. Roedd y dramodydd Terence Rattigan (1911–1977) yn hynod boblogaidd hyd nes i John Osborne a’i debyg ennill ffafr y beirniaid ar ganol y 1950au. Rhwng 1940 a 1958 addaswyd nifer o ddramâu Rattigan yn ffilmiau llwyddiannus, yn eu plith French Without Tears, The Winslow Boy, The Browning Version, The Deep Blue Sea, The Prince and the Showgirl a Separate Tables. Y prif gymeriadau yn The Deep Blue Sea ydy Hester a Freddie ac yn ffilm 1955 fe’u portreadwyd gan Vivien Leigh a Kenneth More. Mae Hester yn briod gyda barnwr enwog, Syr William Collyer (Emlyn Williams) ond mae’n syrthio dan hud dyn ifanc a fu’n beilot yn ystod yr Ail Ryfel Byd, Freddie. Wrth ddod i adnabod Freddie yn dda mae’n sylwi ei fod yn hynod anaeddfed. Mae’n ymddangos y bydd y berthynas hon yr un mor anfoddhaol â’r un y mae wedi ei hepgor. Bellach mae fersiwn newydd o’r ddrama wedi cyrraedd y sinemâu a Terence Davies yw’r cyfarwyddwr. Mae Davies wedi cyfarwyddo The Deep Blue Sea yn y theatr. Mae ganddo ddwy feirniadaeth; fod Rattigan yn tueddu i ddefnyddio’r act gyntaf yn ei ddramâu i gyflwyno’r cefndir yn ei grynswth yn lle gwneud hynny’n raddol trwy gydol y ddrama a’i fod yn or-gynnil, yn arbennig yn ei gyfarwyddiadau i’r actorion. Fel canlyniad, dyw ffilm Davies ddim yn oedi cyn symud y stori yn ei blaen a dywed Tom Hiddleston, sy’n portreadu Freddie, fod dychymyg Davies yn ehangach a chyfoethocach nag eiddo Rattigan. Serch hynny, deialog Rattigan sydd yn y ffilm drwyddi draw ac mae’r cyfnod — llwyfannwyd y ddrama am y tro cyntaf ym 1952 — yn cael ei atgynhyrchu’n ffyddlon. Er bod Hiddleston, Simon Russell Beale (Collyer) a Rachel Weisz (Hester) yn actorion llwyfan profiadol gwyddant hefyd sut i addasu eu techneg ar gyfer y camera. Mae rhai wedi cwyno bod Rachel Weisz yn rhy brydferth. Cafodd Vivien Leigh yr un feirniadaeth yn union yn ôl ym 1955. Mae’n rhyfedd fel mae rhai beirniad yn methu gweld y gall pobl olygus fod yr un mor anhapus â’r mwyaf salw yn ein plith! Sylwodd Hiddleston fod Davies yn nodi yn y sgript y darnau o gerddoriaeth fydd yn chwarae yn y cefndir. Mae lle amlwg i gerddoriaeth Samuel Barber yma a chaneuon poblogaidd o’r 1950au megis ‘You Belong to Me’ a gyfansoddwyd ym 1952. Gan rag-weld y gall fod peth anesmwythyd ym meddyliau dilynwyr selocaf Rattigan, mae Terence Davies yn gofyn i gynulleidfaoedd feirniadu’r hyn a welan nhw ar y sgrin yn hytrach na grwgnach am yr hyn a ddylai fod yno yn eu barn nhw! Fri 20 — thu 26 Jan • gwe 20 — Iau 26 Ion

Fri 27 Jan — thu 2 Feb • gwe 27 Ion — Iau 2 Chwef

czech/2010/105mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Jan svankmajer. With Vaclav helsus, Klara issova, Zuzana Kronerova.

singapore/2011/94mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: eric Khoo. With tetsuya bessho, motoko gollent, yoshihiro tatsumi.

the veteran surrealist Jan svankmajer introduces us to what he claims will be his final film. renowned for some of cinema’s most imaginative and humorously grotesque features, he continues this tradition with the story of evzen, a married man, bored of his job, who retreats into his dreams to live a double life with a beautiful woman. becoming addicted to these dreams, despite his visits to a highly unprofessional psychiatrist, he quits his job and rents a private room so that he can spend more time sleeping.

in post-war occupied Japan, young yoshihiro tatsumi’s passion for comics eventually becomes a means of supporting his poor family. already published as a teenager, talented tatsumi finds even greater inspiration after meeting his idol, animator osamu tezuka. Despite his steady success, tatsumi begins to question why Japanese comics should cater to children with cute and whimsical tales and drawings. in 1957, tatsumi coins the term gekiga (dramatic pictures) and redefines the manga landscape by encouraging an alternative genre for adults which grapples with the darker aspects of life.

the iron lady Fri 27 Jan — thu 9 Feb • gwe 27 Ion — Iau 9 Chwef uK/2011/ctba. Dir: phyllida lloyd. With meryl streep, Jim broadbent, richard e. grant.

a look at the life of margaret thatcher focusing on the 17 days leading up to the falklands War in 1982. her politics aside, she was a ground-breaker who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. this is an insightful portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman, negotiating the politics of power and paying the price for it. Director phyllida lloyd (Mamma Mia!) works again with a transformed streep and brings together a stellar british cast including Jim broadbent as Denis and richard e grant as michael heseltine.

las acacias Fri 27 Jan — thu 2 Feb • gwe 27 Ion — Iau 2 Chwef argentina/spain/2011/86mins/12a. Dir: pablo giorgell. With germán de silva, hebe Duarte, nayra calle mamani.

long distance truck driver rubén picks up a young mother carrying her eight-month-old son en route from paraguay to buenos aires and agrees to take them for a fee. as a man of few words, this is clearly going to be a long journey, despite her efforts to engage him. however, as the strained atmosphere gradually gives way to conversation and then to affection, there comes the growing suspicion that the guarded, gruff rubén may even be falling in love. owing a debt to the ‘slow cinema movement’, this is an enchanting and uplifting experience. Winner of several awards at 2011 Cannes Film Festival, including the prestigious Camera D’or.
