Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan: A Tool For The Making Of Signs

Biography

Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan have worked collaboratively since 1995 and currently live and work in Newcastle upon Tyne. Recent projects and exhibitions include Art Across The City 2012, Swansea and Studio Voltaire, London (both 2012); Collective Gallery (offsite), Edinburgh and Tramway, Glasgow (both 2011); CCA, Glasgow (2010); La Salle de Bains (2009). They are represented by The Modern Institute/ Toby Webster, Glasgow; Galerie Francesca Pia, Zurich and Campoli Presti, London/Paris.

Gallery open: Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 12-6pm; Thursday & Friday 12-8pm; closed Monday

Fri 7 Dec — Sun 24 Feb The collaborative duo Joanne Tatham & Tom O’Sullivan, create provocative and interrogative works that are often concerned with the mythic potential of art. Utilising sculpture, painting, architecture, found imagery, performance, literature, institutional critique and curation, the artists use carefully crafted paths, displacements and diversions to re-stage and re-present a vocabulary of images, phrases and forms that are part of a common history; tools to explore the world of art — with its collective mysticism of forms, objects and histories. This exhibition features a number of elements, intended to challenge and confound interpretation, including the cartoon motif that appears on the lightbox and exhibition leaflet, as well as the title of the work: A tool for the making of signs. In the Gallery, a large-scale construction positions itself awkwardly between two rooms. Reading the sculpture in its entirety is almost impossible requiring the viewer to search for clues and so to become complicit in the construction of its meaning. The structure itself utilises the symbol of the ‘dragon’ which, presented as it is in Tatham and O’Sullivan’s trademark style, explores some of the particular resonances for Welsh national identity and yet nevertheless retains the potential for more primal and multiple meanings. The structure operates as both analogy and counterpoint to the inclusion in the exhibition of twodimensional and audio works by painter and modernist poet David Jones. By integrating his works into the structure itself, the artists ask us to consider the relationship between contemporary art and art produced in the mid 20th Century, in particular how contemporary artists look back to previous artistic practices and incorporate this interest as part of a current discourse.

Phil Collins This Unfortunate Thing Between Us Lightbox Commission Until Tue 4 Dec Chapter is delighted to announce a new lightbox artwork by Artes Mundi shortlisted artist Phil Collins. Commissioned by Chapter as part of Experimentica 2012, the lightbox features a vibrant montage of the characters from Collins’ critically acclaimed video installation — This Unfortunate Thing Between Us (TUTBU TV) — showing at Chapter until 13 January 2013. A vast collage has been assembled from images that take us behind the scenes and into the world of Collins’ theatrical TV production. Featuring a cast of largerthan-life characters, including Wales’ own pop hero Gruff Rhys, the artwork provides a riotous backdrop against which to experience the videos, screening in parallel in the TUTBU TV caravans that nestle below on the forecourt. These two second–hand caravans host the UK premiere of This Unfortunate Thing Between Us (2011). First performed in September 2011 and broadcast live on German digital television, TUTBU TV is an alternative home shopping channel selling real life experiences at promotional prices, in place of mass-produced commodities. Hosted by a crew of actors and porn workers, and soundtracked live by Gruff Rhys and Y Niwl, TUTBU TV adopts the format of teleshopping, with pitches, demonstrations and live phone-ins, providing a tantalising glimpse into what could be the future of consumer television. This Unfortunate Thing Between Us, 2011 is open Tuesday — Sunday 12-6pm and admission is free. The lightbox can be viewed 24 hours. TUTBU TV is presented at Chapter as part of Artes Mundi www.artesmundi.org The Phil Collins lightbox commission has received financial support from Cardiff Contemporary, a Cardiff Council initiative developed in partnership with Cardiff’s visual art, design and architecture communities.

Art In The Bar Gordon Dalton: We Care A Lot Fri 30 Nov – Sun 6 Jan Gordon Dalton’s paintings have a melancholic humour that questions their seriousness and intentions. His seemingly offhand approach denies any superficial finesse to reveal a love of awkward imagery. The paintings have an adolescent quality about them, vulnerable, embarrassed and yet full of bravado. An anxious contradiction is on show, with the work being self conscious of what it is, its possible failings, yet disregarding any angst by replacing it with a certain nonchalance and arrogance. Paintings jostle against each other for dominance whilst others battle against a blood red wall painting. The works both attract and repel, daring you to like them, to share in their stuttering, bad grammar. As an artist Dalton shifts positions with ease, from Dr Frankenstein, to his monster, to the baying mob with pitchforks and flaming torches. You almost feel he is teasing you, calling you names behind your back, which he probably is. References spill out like an overstuffed wardrobe in an American teenager’s bedroom. Whoopee cushions, heavy metal, footballs, rubber chickens, cartoons, horror movies, bad jokes, with the odd art history book stolen from the library — Dalton paints them as if he is cramming it all in just to let it all spill out again. These ongoing battles dare the viewer to look longer and harder, driven by an addictive inquiry into what painting is, and why it continues to fascinate. Works detailing apathy, disaffection, paradoxical beliefs, power, resistance, history, future, excess and anxiety are created in relation to the obsessive repetition in a modern world where possibilities and choices are seemingly endless. Beyond the Border Sarah Rundle: Gawain & The Green Knight

New Sound Wales Henry’s Funeral Shoe, The Boy Royals & Big Colours

Wed 5 Dec 8pm

Sat 8 Dec 7.30pm

An ancient Celtic story that became a literary masterpiece in the 14th century is now retold with intelligent irreverence by storyteller Sarah Rundle. Gorgeous Gawain, the King’s nephew, rides out in golden armour on his white horse. His mission is suicidal, his journey long and cold. He is constantly ambushed, but the greatest danger comes from his own heart....Themes of magic, honour and heroism tinged with absurdity combine in this classic winter’s tale from King Arthur’s Court.

Newsoundwales return to Chapter with three of Wales’ most exciting live bands. Influenced by blues and 60s bands, Henry’s Funeral Shoe’s debut album ‘Donkey Jacket’ has pushed them into the first division of Welsh bands. The Boy Royals (previously named Town) are heavily influenced by bands such as The Jam, The Who and Britpop and their single ‘Teenage Sky’ received airplay from DJs such as Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens. Big Colours are a young three piece who released an ep ‘Farewell to Forever’ in 2012. Influenced by the likes of The Clash and the Dead Kennedys they are a definite prospect for 2013.

Marega Palser: Sometimes We Look

Hong Kong Season Peter Suart Melencolia

Wed 16 – Sat 19 Jan 8pm This site specific combination of dance, drawing, animation and printmaking investigates how the simple use of mark-making can affect the way movement can be created, and how dance, in turn, can affect the impulse to draw. Marega Palser combines her training in dance and fine art to provide this performing exhibition of her work in collaboration with three of Wales’s finest movement artists — Catherine Bennett, Belinda Neave and Rosalind Brooks. The dancers and choreographer use their individual styles and experience to provide a subtle and intimate take on the art work and the exhibition space. £10/£8/£6

“[Marega’s performance and drawing work is] engaging, skilful, serious, funny, personal and generous all at once” Caroline Sabin, Artist and Dancer

andGo presents Confusions by Alan Ayckbourn Thu 31 Jan – Sat 2 Feb 8pm (+ Sat 2 Feb 3pm) A mother spends so much time home alone with her kids that she treats everyone like children… her salesman husband sits in a hotel bar looking for more than a drink… a waiter eavesdrops on the deteriorating relationships of diners… a local councillor is invited to open a village fete… five strangers sit alone and talk — but will anyone listen? Ayckbourn’s ingenious suite of comic vignettes peeks behind the twitching curtains of suburbia to find desire, obsession and loneliness.

029 2030 4400

Fri 25 Jan 8pm Suart is co-founder (1987) of the Hong Kong theatrico-musical ensemble ‘the box’, author and illustrator of the Tik and Tok books, and illustrator for the Folio Society. He premiered in the UK with Fragile, at Chapter in 2011, which dealt with disease of the body. Melencolia — based upon three famous prints of Albrecht Dürer — deals with disease of the mind. Through image, movement, original music (recorded and live), and spoken and projected text (English, Cantonese, German, Latin), Melencolia looks at the life and times of Dürer, enquiring into the idea of melancholy, the Iconoclastic Fury, the decline of Christianity in Britain, translation, black dogs, the Hong Kong riots of 1967, and sixteenth century photographs of Hong Kong. It is at once serious, melancholic, and comic. £12/£10/£8 Presented in association with the Intangible Studio

Said I to myself, ‘If I don’t mind my Ps and Qs, the Guv’nor — from force of habit — will fine me all my pocket-money.’” The imminent arrival of Cis’ godfather sends Agatha incognito to the Hôtel des Princes to warn him of her deception. But it’s also where her son has cajoled his otherwise staid stepfather into joining him for a binge. High-spirited carousing leads to a police raid and a night of outrageous mishap as the trapped guests make desperate attempts to conceal themselves from the law and from each other. Indignities escalate at court the next day where Posket, the police magistrate, must preside.

Amour

Fri 7 Dec — Thu 3 Jan

Fri 30 Nov — Sun 30 Dec

USA/2012/137mins/15 Dir: Paul Thomas Anderson. With Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams.

Austria/2012/127mins/12A/subtitled. Dir: Michael Haneke. With Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva, Isabelle Huppert.

In the years after WWII, a charismatic American intellectual publishes his book The Cause, creating a new religion which promises to end war, poverty and cure cancer. When he meets a troubled drifter, he invites the man to help him spread the new faith. As their congregation increases, the drifter begins to question the religion he once accepted and the mentor who gave his life direction.

Georges and Anne are cultivated, retired music teachers in their eighties living in a beautiful Parisian apartment. When one day Anne has an attack, the couple’s bond of love is severely tested. While Haneke is known for his confrontational past, this poignantly acted and uncommonly tender twohander relates the tragic final months in a relationship with at least six decades’ worth of history, as a concerned French husband cares for his increasingly irritable wife in the wake of two debilitating strokes.

HITCHCOCK: THE REAL MASTER What better way to bring in the new year and prepare ourselves for Anthony Hopkins as Hitchcock, than with a fine selection, from over 50 features, of homicide, mariticide, uxoricide, avicide, menticide, faked suicide and a little psychoanalysis, voyeurism, surrealism and Nazi espionage thrown in for good measure?

The Ring

Spellbound

UK/1927/116mins/PG. Dir: Alfred Hitchcock. With Carl Brisson. Lillian Hall-Davis, Ian Hunter

USA/1945/111mins/PG. Dir: Alfred Hitchcock. With Ingrid Bergman, Gregory Peck

Beautifully evoking London in the 1920s, Hitchcock’s boxing melodrama tells the story of two boxers whose love rivalry plays out between the ropes. Suffused with expressionist touches, using symbolism and heavily stylised shots to convey mood and meaning which was probably influenced by Hitchcock’s time spent in Germany, this restoration includes the premiere performance of a new jazz score for the film by Soweto Kinch.

Dr. Constance Petersen is a psychiatrist with a firm understanding of human nature—or so she thinks. When the mysterious Dr. Anthony Edwardes becomes the new chief of staff at her institution, the bookish and detached Constance plummets into a whirlwind of tangled identities and feverish psychoanalysis, where the greatest risk is to fall in love. A transcendent love story replete with taut excitement and startling imagery featuring a captivating dream sequence by Surrealist icon Salvador Dalí.

Downhill

Sun 9, Tue 11 + Thu 13 Dec UK/ 1927/80min/U. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. With Ivor Novello, Ben Webster, Robin Irvine

Novello, here performing his own stage play, plays (somewhat implausibly at 34) model school student Roddy, falsely accused of getting a young woman pregnant. Expelled and disgraced, Roddy is reduced to renting himself out as a companion to lonely, wealthy women before winding up destitute and ill in Marseilles. Unusually dark for its day, Downhill is the first pure example of Hitchcock’s much-revisited ‘wrong man’ plot and is a most unfairly neglected work.

Rebecca

Sun 16, Tue 18 + Thu 20 Dec USA/1940/130mins/PG. Dir: Alfred Hitchcock. With Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, George Sanders

Bringing the Daphne Du Maurier novel to the screen, this much loved film tells of a naive ladies’ companion who meets and falls in love with the wealthy but haunted Maxim de Winter. Married, they return to Manderley, his large country estate in Cornwall but Max is still troubled by the death of his first wife, Rebecca, in a boating accident the year before. Clashing with the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, the new Mrs De Winter discovers that Rebecca still has a strange hold on everyone at Manderley.

Fri 21 – Sun 23 Dec

Notorious

Sun 30 Dec, Wed 2 + Thu 3 Jan USA/1946/102mins/U. Dir: Alfred Hitchcock. With Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, Claud Rains

In this brilliant allegory of love and betrayal, Hitchcock fuses two of his favourite elements: suspense and romance. A beautiful woman with a tainted past is enlisted by American agent Devlin to spy on a ring of Nazis in post-war Rio. Her espionage work becomes life-threatening after she marries the most debonair of the Nazi ring, Alex. Only Devlin can rescue her, but to do so he must face his role in her desperate situation and acknowledge that he’s loved her all along.

But when Jean Horton, a former grande dame of the opera fallen on hard times, also Reggie’s ex-wife and the fourth and most celebrated member of their former quartet, moves into the home to everyone’s surprise, the plans for this year’s concert start to unravel. This directorial debut from Dustin Hoffman is an entertaining and uplifting story about redefining old age and growing old with hope, showing how the human spirit remains undimmed even as the brightest stars start to fade. + Audio description is available and there will be soft subtitled screenings on Tue 22 and Wed 30 Jan.

In his first feature film screenplay, Salman Rushdie adapts his own Booker Prize-winning novel — an allegorical saga that parallels the dramatic upheavals in one family’s history with the events that would define contemporary India, from the end of colonialism to the partitioning of Pakistan. Born on the cusp of India’s independence from Britain and switched at birth by a maternity nurse in a secret act of protest, Saleem Sinai’s fate is not only inextricably bound to the future of his country, but also to that of Shiva, the boy whose place of privilege he takes. When Saleem discovers he has special powers and is able to communicate with other children who share his auspicious birthday, we are able to navigate the tumultuous course of history from a host of perspectives.

Hooper [The King’s Speech, The Damned United] has brought this well-loved musical and novel to the screen with a star studded ensemble cast. + Our Adaptations film and literature group will meet after the screening on Mon 28 Jan to discuss the film. Please book tickets from the box office.

Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat no matter how personal the cost.

Happy Happy Fri 25 – Thu 31 Jan Norway/2010/85mins/15/subtitles. Dir: Anne Sewitsky. With Agnes Kittelsen, Henrik Rafaelsen

Family is the most important thing in the world to Kaja. She is an eternal optimist in spite of living with a man who would rather go hunting with the boys and isn’t interested in having sex with her anymore because she “isn’t particularly attractive”. But when the perfect couple moves in next door, Kaja struggles to keep her emotions in check. Not only do these successful, beautiful, exciting people sing in a choir, they have also adopted a child - from Ethiopia. These new neighbors open a whole new world to Kaja, with consequences for everyone involved. And when Christmas comes around, it becomes evident that nothing will ever be like before - even if Kaja tries her very best.
