Andy Eagle Director Welcome to December at Chapter. As always we have an excellent programme this month which I hope you will enjoy browsing through. We are particularly delighted to welcome back Pride to our cinemas, back through popular demand. Whilst not exactly a Christmas film, it nonetheless warms the heart, is full of human spirit with many belly laughs and so in that sense is full of Christmas Spirit. We continue to present the work of Renzo Martens, Sharon Lockhart and Karen Mirza and Brad Butler as part of Artes Mundi 6 and in the theatre there is dance, drama, Dylan Thomas and Richard Burton! We have an excellent Christmas menu available, a Christmas Craft fair and of course for an interesting last minute gift why not consider our gift shop. Happy Christmas and a successful 2015!

Artes Mundi 6 Until Sun 22 Feb 2015

We are delighted to be working with Artes Mundi to present work by Karen Mirza and Brad Butler (UK), Renzo Martens (The Netherlands) and Sharon Lockhart (USA). Works by the other Artes Mundi 6 shortlisted artists can be seen at National Museum Cardiff and Ffotogallery, Penarth. For details about all of the shortlisted artists and opening times at other venues please visit www.artesmundi.org

Renzo Martens and the Institute for Human Activities Lightbox and Theatre Foyer Renzo Martens lives and works in Brussels and Kinshasa and is known for his disturbing documentaries in which he travels to war-torn countries and places himself at the centre of the action, demonstrating how Western spectators consume distant trauma. Martens presents Episode 3 (Enjoy Poverty) in which he visits the ruined Congo, interviewing photographers, plantation owners and locals; acting the role of Western journalist, colonist,

missionary and aid worker. His film focuses on one observation: poverty is Africa’s biggest export, and as with other natural resources, it is exploited by the Western world through the media. He lectures locals about poverty as a commodity and encourages them to sell their own photographs of starvation and death rather than let Western journalists profit from their humanitarian disaster.

Exhibition open: Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 12–6pm; Thursday & Friday 12–8pm; closed Monday

Karen Mirza and Brad Butler Lunchtime Events Gallery and Art in the Bar

Mirza and Butler have worked together since 1998, developing a layered practice that consists of film, installation, performance, publishing and curating. Their work challenges terms such as participation, collaboration and the traditional roles of the artist as producer and the audience as recipient. For Artes Mundi 6, Mirza and Butler present The Unreliable Narrator, a constellation of works that take advantage of the gap between fiction and reality. In You are the Prime Minister, a prominent neon becomes an empowering invitation to take up the title role in a fantasy fiction. A video installation also speaks of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, alternately from a position of the terrorists and of a seemingly impartial commentator.

Thursdays 1.05–1.30pm Performers from across Wales create unique responses to Artes Mundi 6, taking inspiration from the shortlisted artists’ exhibited works, materials, themes or countries.

Thu 18 Dec Live Music, in association with SĹľn Festival.

Sharon Lockhart Gallery Sharon Lockhart works with individuals and groups to make still and moving images that are both visually compelling and socially engaged. One of Lockhart’s major works is Lunch Break (2008) which features 42 shipyard workers as they take their midday break. Over the course of the lunch break we see workers engaged in a wide range of activities — reading, sleeping, and talking — in addition to actually eating their midday meal. For Artes Mundi 6, Lockhart shows one of two films from Lunch Break entitled Exit. Filmed over a five-day working week, each of the five takes that comprise Exit shows the long progression of workers leaving the Bath Iron Works at the end of their shift. Reminiscent of Louis Lumiere’s film, Leaving the Lumiere Factory, Exit emphasises the flow of time and the nuances of daily experience.

Talk at 2

Sat 13 + Sat 27 Dec 2pm Our Talks at 2 are on every other Saturday during exhibitions and are hosted by our artist Live Guides Richard Higlett and Thomas Williams. Talks at 2 are free of charge and there’s no need to book in advance — just turn up at the Gallery and join in! FREE

Our supporters in action!

Legal & General are a long standing supporter of Chapter and this November supported the performance ‘Memoria’, a project aimed at increasing the awareness and understanding of dementia. As well as enabling Chapter to bring a ground-breaking piece of theatre to full production, the project linked directly to Legal & General’s CSR strategy and its Health & Wellbeing programme. It specifically supported the company’s ‘dignity in later life’ campaign which not only aims to raise awareness of the impact that an ageing population has on Legal & General as a business (through pensions, life & critical illness insurance) but also the impact it has on its employees, their relatives and wider society. We were delighted to offer Legal & General a tailored package of benefits surrounding Memoria which not only raised awareness of this campaign, but also offered direct support to employees through workshops which examined the impact of dementia on both sufferers and carers, as well as offering exclusive branding opportunities and complimentary tickets to the premiere of this powerful piece of theatre.

For more information on any of our corporate relationships or to find out how your own business could benefit from the association with Chapter please contact Elaina Gray on 02920 355662 or email elaina.gray@chapter.org

Blood on the Snow The winter solstice… where death meets joy in equal measure. The dark hinge of the year with the hope of spring curled and sleeping in its slow beating heart. Following on from the sell-out delight that was A Curious Zoo Caroline Sabin returns this year with a cockle-warming theatrical presentation of Benjamin Britten’s iconic choral masterpiece A Ceremony of Carols. Step through the wardrobe into an imposing church interior where a magical snow-laden forest grows. Here a group of dryads will sing, dance, fly, squabble, knit, throw snowballs and generally entertain your woolly winter socks off. Come spend an hour in this enchanted woodland with an extraordinary cast of multi-skilled performers. Expect tokens of love, heart-melting beauty and slapstick antics while the scent of the pine forest pervades each moment. And yes — there will be pie. Cast: Eddie Ladd, Tianyi Lu, Beth Powlesland, Caroline Sabin, Bethan Semmens, Kylie Ann Smith and Lara Ward with new writing and a cameo appearance from the inimitable Jon Gower. Please note: This is a promenade performance. The space is fully wheel chair accessible but there is no formal seating.

Andy Zaltzman One half of the global smash hit topical podcast, The Bugle, alongside John Oliver, Andy Zaltzman addresses issues including The World, and associated matters, in his first DVD recording. A renowned satirist and liar, Zaltzman, star of 5 Live’s 7 Day Sunday, its one-day-earlier-in-the-week sibling 7 Day Saturday, sundry stuff on Radio 4, and bafflingly/rightly infrequent TV appearances (delete according to taste). He has performed stand-up in all of the planet’s leading hemispheres, and four of its top-ranked continents.

‘Probably the best satirical comic we’ve produced in the last two decades. Intelligent, biting and silly’ Time Out London Helen Keen’s It Is Rocket Science! Helen Keen’s It Is Rocket Science! is a low budget, highly original look at the history and future of space travel. Factually accurate and funny, featuring all the enormity of the universe, without any of the boring bits. With Space Nazis! Satanists! And Aeronautical Engineers! This live show has so far launched three award-winning, critically acclaimed series for BBC Radio 4.

‘Quirky, offbeat and original... Helen Keen is clearly someone to watch’ The Sunday Times

Mike Bubbins The King and I Sat 13 Dec 8pm Since childhood, Mike has noticed parallels between his life, and the life of Elvis Presley, and at crucial moments he has known that he has had a jumpsuited shoulder to lean on. Not literally, he’s not delusional, but rather in Presley’s songs, which Mike is convinced were recorded specifically for him, in order to support and encourage him. To say thank you to his spiritual guide, Mike has entered every Elvis Tribute Act competition in the country, including making the finals (honestly) of the competition to find Europe’s Best Elvis. This is a homecoming for Mike, who performs across the UK. The audience can expect lots of laughs, at least three songs, and a costume change. Which may include a jumpsuit. Fri 5 — Thu 11 Dec

UK/2014/113mins/12A. Dir: Morten Tyldum. With: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode.

UK/2014/107mins/12A. Dir: Israel Horovitz. With: Maggie Smith, Kevin Kline, Kristin Scott Thomas.

This is the fascinating and ultimately tragic true story of Alan Turing, the cryptanalyst who cracked the Nazi’s wartime secret enigma code and advanced computer science yet found himself demonised for revealing his own secrets. Beginning with his arrest for homosexuality in 1951 the film explores the life of a man unworried by social conventions and the accepted chain of command, who found salvation in the clarity of numbers.

Mathias Gold inherits a Parisian apartment from his estranged father, but when he arrives to sell he’s shocked to discover a live-in tenant who is not prepared to budge. The apartment is a viager — part of an ancient French property system with complex rules — and the feisty English tenant, Mathilde who has lived there for many years, can by contract collect monthly payments from Mathias until her death. Mathias decides to settle in for what could be some time, and soon secrets are unravelled to unite them in unexpected ways.

This unprecedentedly delicate documentary examines legendary boxer Muhammed Ali’s personal life. The void left by Ali’s silence is filled by his family and terrific vintage footage from the Rumble to the Jungle to the Thriller in Manila.

In the harsh Nebraska Territories three women have gone insane due to the severe pioneer lifestyle. Pious, independent-minded Mary Bee Cuddy takes it upon herself to transport them to sanctuary in the East. Employing boozy, nomadic George Briggs they must first traverse the stark beauty and threatening landscape. This is an uncharacteristic Western, about coping with failure to tame the West rather than conquest.

Fri 12 — Thu 18 Dec USA/2014/138mins/12A. Dir: Tate Taylor. With: Chadwick Boseman, Nelsan Ellis, Dan Aykroyd.

Based on the incredible life story of the Godfather of Soul, we look inside the music, moves and moods of James Brown, from his impoverished childhood to his evolution into one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. A rare biopic that relishes in the surreal and gregarious aspects of the ego-driven character of Brown, who lived life to the fullest.

Bad Film Club Double Bill

Wed 24 Dec

Sun 7 Dec

USA/1947/130mins/U. Dir: Frank Capra. With: James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore.

Santa’s Summer House

George Bailey is a local boy who stays local, doesn’t make good, and becomes so unhappy that he teeters on the edge of sanity one snowy Christmas Eve. An angel named Clarence reveals to him a parallel universe in which he doesn’t exist, leaving a hole in the community. Frank Capra’s masterpiece is a call for a kinder, gentler world and a real festive treat. For a Homegrown Christmas film you may enjoy locally made A Wonderful Christmas Time (p20).

USA/2012/90mins/PG. Dir: David DeCoteau.

Bells are jingling, chestnuts are warming and The Bad Film Club are serving up two helpings of the biggest turkeys they can find with their Christmas Spectacular Double Bill. First up is Santa’s Summer House. Ever wonder what would happen if a bunch of 90s Z list action film actors stumbled upon the house of Santa and Mrs Clause? Wonder no more, we have the answer and that answer is just over an hour and a half of bad acting, confusing plot lines and a seven minute improvised croquette scene.

Megaforce USA/1982/99mins/PG. Dir: Hal Needham.

If the first film wasn’t enough they are also bringing you Megaforce, a 1980s film which brings to life the dream of having Barry Bostwick heading up a rapid deployment defence unit that is called into action whenever freedom is threatened. It’s an early version of Team America without the strings, and acting more wooden than the puppets. Mince pies, crackers, Christmas games and the good chocolates. Bring your Christmas spirit...You’re going to need it. Note: There will be a live commentary throughout the films, and film titles can be subject to last minute change.
