Nástio Mosquito
Bedwyr Williams
Lamia Joreige
Embracing performance, video, music, poetry, installation, philosophy and digital art, Mosquito’s work bursts forth with fervent energy. Originally rooted in the broadcast industry as a director and cameraman, his practice is both confrontational and deeply witty, expressing an urgent desire to engage with reality at all levels. Nástio Mosquito’s exhibition for Artes Mundi 7 will include a new audiovisual installation entitled Transitory Suppository: Act#I Another Leader (2016). The installation revolves around a unique and absurd solution for a fictional country attempting to overcome its economic problems and transform itself into a world power. The artist takes centre stage, embodying the character of a despotic leader in a darkly humorous and pertinent exhibition.
Bedywr Williams’ practice draws upon his own life experiences, highlighting and examining the friction between the deadly serious and the banal aspects of modern life. For Artes Mundi 7, Bedwyr has created a fictional city around Cadair Idris (Idris’ Chair) near Dolgellau in North Wales. The city draws its inspiration from mega cities built all over the world to house expanding populations and to sate burgeoning state ambition in times of economic boom. The film Tyrrau Mawr can be seen at National Museum Cardiff and Bedwyr has developed a companion work for Chapter’s Caffi Bar space. The large-scale diptych of day and night from the film also references the medium of matte painting, a device applied to live-action film footage to enable the illusion on film of environments that would otherwise be too expensive, or impossible, to build.
Lamia Joreige uses archival documents and fictional elements to reflect on the relationship between individual stories and collective history. Her practice is rooted in the possibilities of representation of the Lebanese wars and their aftermath, specifically Beirut, a city at the centre of her imagery. For Artes Mundi 7 the artist will exhibit work at Chapter and National Museum Cardiff. Chapter will host the premiere of the latest work within the ongoing project Under-Writing Beirut — Nahr (The River), 2013-2016, entitled After the River. In this work Joreige investigates the urban areas in and around the river which defines the eastern border of Beirut, inviting a reflection on migration, the process of gentrification, and the notions of borders and landscape in our imaginary. Other elements of Under-Writing Beirut — Nahr will be shown at National Museum Cardiff.

Stuart Hall is one of the most influential and esteemed cultural theorists of a generation. A thinker and commentator, his peers include other giants of political commentary such as Noam Chomsky, Susan Sontag, Alan Ginsberg, Michel Foucault and Gore Vidal. This majestic film takes the viewer on a roller coaster ride through the upheavals, struggles and turning points that made the 20th century the century of campaigning, and of global political and cultural change. Gallery Opening Times: Tue, Wed, Sat, Sun: 12-6pm, Thu, Fri: 12-8pm, Mon: Closed
Sat 17 Dec 2.30pm Echt depicts a dystopian future in which a fast-track feudal system has left the country divided among new chieftains. In this new world where status is based on conspicuous consumption, hoarders are kings. They have set up their new courts in former dance halls and clubs, populated by a host of Bedwyr Williams’ acutely observed characters. Realised with the collaboration of the omni talented Casey Raymond and Ewan Jones- Morris, Echt was originally part of a larger installation in Tramway, Glasgow as part of the City’s 2014 Glasgow International Festival.

Emerging from Ann Arbor Michigan amidst a countercultural revolution, The Stooges' powerful and aggressive style of rockn-roll blew a crater in the musical landscape of the late 1960s “upsetting people wherever we went”. Assaulting audiences with a blend of rock, blues, R&B, and free jazz, the band planted the seeds for what would be called punk in the decades that followed. This is a look at what director Jarmusch calls “the greatest rock & roll band ever”.
Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai Sun 4 + Tue 6 Dec USA/1999/111mins/15. Dir: Jim Jarmusch. With: Forest Whitaker, Henry Silva, John Tormey
Ghost Dog is a hitman trying to live by an ancient Japanese warrior code and has devoted himself to the service of Louie, a low-level crime boss who once saved his life. When Louie's superiors decide he must be executed, Ghost Dog leaps into action, methodically wiping out his many enemies. Featuring a seminal soundtrack from RZA of Wu-Tang Clan, this is a sharply funny, surreal and unconventional look at crime culture. See p12 for other film screenings as part of BFI Black Star
A bus driver in a city that bears his name, every day Paterson adheres to a simple routine, observing the city as it drifts across his windshield and overhearing fragments of conversation swirling around him. He writes poetry into a notebook; he walks his dog; he stops in a bar and drinks exactly one beer; he goes home to his wife, Laura. A film that quietly celebrates the modest and small details of everyday life, inspired by the poetry of William Carlos Williams.

In the mid '80s, Nottingham played host to a rising fascination with hip hop and breakdance culture. Its infamous Rock City jams enabled a generation to escape the confines of inner city life, widespread racism and became an institution for breakdancers across the UK. Combining present-day interviews with five original B-Boys (and B-Girls) with previously unseen video footage, this engaging archive is a character-driven documentary full of energy, charm, heart and of course, breakdancing.
In 1947, Seretse Khama, the Prince of Botswana, met Ruth Williams, a London office worker. They were a perfect match, yet their proposed marriage was challenged not only by their families but by the British and South African governments. Celebrating the release of the new album Skeleton Tree we go behind the scenes of the writing and recording of the album interwoven with performances from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. The film began as a collaborative concept between the band and filmmaker Andrew Dominik but the film took on more significance as the tragic backdrop of the writing of the album evolved. A stark, raw and fragile album that began its journey in late 2014 in Brighton and finished in France a year later.

The filmmaker’s authority over the story becomes complicated as she and the audience get drawn tighter into Sonita’s defiance to tell her story in this award-winning film. On the cusp of relocating from Madrid to Portugal with her new partner Julieta’s daughter, Antía goes missing and Julieta is plunged into an exploration of her life and how her daughter has been a part of her story. The mystery at the centre of this emotional story is Julieta in this adaptation of an Alice Munro short story by a master filmmaker.
“ A sombre, ravishing study of grief, guilt and burden” Dave Calhoun, Time Out
The Innocents Fri 23 — Fri 30 Dec Poland/2016/115mins/15/subs. Dir: Anne Fontaine. With: Lou de Laâge, Vincent Macaigne, Agata Buzek, Agata Kulesza
Mathilda is a young French doctor working for the Red Cross helping concentration camp survivors outside Warsaw after WWII. She makes a disquieting discovery when visiting a convent: several nuns in advanced states of pregnancy after systematic rape by Soviet soldiers during the war. With the political alliances still delicate and the nuns’ iconography of purity to maintain, Mathilda helps the nuns through whilst trying to keep their secret. A moving and compelling true story of faith and loyalty.

(Un)Covered
Cymru yn Fenis Wales in Venice
By Zosia Dowmunt Tue 10 + Wed 11 Jan 7.30pm
Cymru yn Fenis Wales in Venice is delighted to announce that James Richards has been selected to represent Wales at the 57th International Art Exhibition, the Venice Biennale. The exhibition, which is curated by Chapter, Cardiff, will run from 13 May to 26 November 2017. Richards presentation - his first major commission at an international biennale - will consist of a new, site responsive sound installation and a suite of additional works containing overlapping archival samples and musical extracts repeated or reworked into different forms. He will collaborate with students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and, through a partnership residency, will excavate the archives of the National Sound and Screen Archive in Aberystwyth. As part of the Cymru yn Fenis Wales in Venice project, the artist will also curate a group show for Chapter in Autumn 2017 after which his solo Venice presentation will be shown in February 2018.
Clothes can be armor, art work, identity, conformity, protection or rebellion (Un)Covered is a solo dance theatre performance exploring who we are as women inside our clothes. How we can embody empowerment and fight back against the politicization and violent control society places on our bodies, via the clothes we wear. This issue connects us all, across borders and transcending cultural difference. The freedom is not in what you wear or don’t wear- it’s in the choice. £10/£8

Prospero is a magician, able to control the very elements and bend nature to his will. When a sail appears on the horizon, he reaches out across the ocean to the ship that carries the men who wronged him. Creating a vast magical storm he wrecks the ship and washes his enemies up on the shore. When they wake they find themselves lost on a fantastical island where nothing is as it seems. £17.50/£14/£13
