Welcome
Welcome to your guide to all that’s in store this July. We’re nearing the Edinburgh Festival, and feeling a little envious of the lucky people heading up there. Luckily, we’re going to be previewing a number of productions, from gritty drama to the best of Welsh comedy, in the weeks prior to the festival. Look out for this logo EP and stay one step ahead of the Edinburgh crowd with these exclusive previews (p10–18)! We’re looking forward to a new exhibition in our Gallery, as we welcome sculpture show Sticky Intimacy: Katie Cuddon, Emma Hart & Nicholas Pope (p4–5). Over in our cinema, we’re keeping the little ones (and big kids) entertained as we continue our Studio Ghibli retrospective (p28–29) and kick-start our Roald Dahl on Film season, gearing up to the birthday of Wales’ favourite storytellers, with a screening of new release, The BFG (p27). And, as we near the end of term, we’ve got the summer holidays covered with films, workshops and activity days, turn to pages 29–30 to find out more.

Sticky Intimacy: Katie Cuddon, Emma Hart & Nicholas Pope Preview: Thu 7 July Exhibition: Fri 8 July — Sun 18 Sep
‘Sticky Intimacy’ brings together artists of different generations who each explore an inquisitive relationship to materials and making. The show is a conversation around shared formal and thematic approaches and, while the work is diverse, each artist makes sculpture that is resolutely un-monumental. In using materials such as glass, wood and clay Cuddon, Hart and Pope translate their own circumstances and lived experiences into exuberant and highly emotive works. Whether it is through a process of sculpting with clay, drawing or glass blowing, the body and its myriad of imperfections are mirrored in the wonky, the awkward and the asymmetrical, and all are tied to the intimacy of the handmade. Katie Cuddon explores the materiality of clay and the spatial engagement dictated by sculpture. Each sculpture is made out of highly tactile and textured clay to look both familiar and strange. The formalised interaction between objects, and between object and viewer, prompts us to contemplate the stereotypes they hinge upon: issues of gender and sexuality, rejection, failure, loss and shame.

In ‘Penumbra’ a faceless, genderless, child-size ceramic sculpture suggests an omnipresent spectre in the gallery. The powdery, pinched surface intonates somebody trying to get the measure of this person or creature, as if repetitious squeezing, kneading, feeling, could release the contents or help to understand the insides better. ‘Leg Plough’ wavers between comedy and melancholy where the frailty of the childish clay legs invoke thoughts of frustration, of materiality battered by the tide of entropy and ever-threatening collapse. Emma Hart’s work is marked by an anarchic aesthetic that upends and disrupts the viewing process, and captures the confusion, stress and nausea of everyday experience. Hart uses materials that reference awkward experiences and by doing so creates visual spillages that walk a tight line between control and disarray. Ceramic outlines of wine glasses tip ceramic drinks against the gallery wall. These pools are simultaneously speech bubbles and vomit that erupt from the mouth shapes that Hart has bitten in to the clay herself. Sculptures of hair nod to tensions between live-ness, looseness, control and stasis. Often seen as healthy, glamorous and feminine the long hair here is held by oversized scrunchies that make an unconvincing attempt at taming already static fired clay. Like that of many of his peers who emerged in the 1970s, who were preoccupied with finding a new and distinctive sculptural language, Nicholas Pope’s work marked a disassociation from an earlier generation and he began to be known for using mainly natural
materials, which he carved, or more simply, stacked and assembled. Following his 1980 exhibition representing Britain at the Venice Biennale, Pope visited Zimbabwe and Tanzania; an experience that affected the rest of his life and twisted his artistic practice completely. In a move towards softer, more malleable materials such as glass, porcelain, textiles, moulded aluminium and ceramics, Pope began to make abstract works that reference complicated themes of spirituality and society. In this exhibition, Pope has worked with master glassmaker James Maskrey from the National Glass Centre, Sunderland, to create a new series of 14 chalices inspired by the Seven Virtues and Seven Deadly Sins. Working from the artist’s original drawings, the chalices translate mark making into glass blowing, manifesting a complex relationship between artist and maker. With the drawings displayed alongside the chalices, audiences are offered a unique opportunity to see this translation in proximity. ‘Sticky Intimacy’ is curated by Hannah Firth for Chapter and is developed in partnership with Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art (NGCA), Sunderland. ‘Baldock Pope Zahle’ formed the first part of this exhibition diptych and was initiated and curated by George Vasey for NGCA. Nicholas Pope’s Seven Virtues and Seven Deadly Sins were originally commissioned by NGCA for ‘Baldock Pope Zahle’ which was also generously supported by Sunderland City Council, The National Glass Centre, C’Art, Arts Council England, and Grosserer L.F. James Richards
James Richards selected to represent Cymru yn Fenis Wales in Venice 2017
We are delighted to announce that James Richards has been selected to represent Cymru yn Fenis Wales in Venice 2017 in a presentation to be curated by Chapter for the 57th International Art Exhibition, the Venice Biennale. This solo presentation — to develop a suite of new work for a large scale, ambitious and original exhibition — will be the artist’s first major commission at an international biennale. Richards has a strong presence on the contemporary UK art scene with a rapidly growing reputation internationally. Receiving widespread critical acclaim following his Turner prize nomination in 2014 and current presence in the British Art Show 8, this opportunity comes at a pivotal moment to consolidate his practice at one of most significant international platforms for the visual arts, the Venice Biennale. The artist’s interest lies in the possibility of the personal amidst the chaos of mass media. He combines video, sound and still images to create installations and live events. His work makes use of an ever-growing bank of video material that includes fragments of cinema, works by other artists, stray camcorder footage, murky late night TV and archive research. Carefully constructed installations involve sculptural, cinematic, acoustic, musical and curatorial considerations to create works of extraordinary intensity.
James Richards was born and brought up in Cardiff and now lives in Berlin. It is significant for Chapter — a place that James sites as extremely influential on his early career — to create a project with the artist both in his hometown of Cardiff and on an international platform in Venice. Hannah Firth, Director of Visual Art at Chapter and curator of Cymru yn Fenis Wales in Venice 2017 commented: “James Richards is one of the most original and exciting artists of his generation and we are absolutely thrilled to be working with him to commission a new body of work for presentation at such a significant international event. We have built a strong collaborative approach and are working with a range of organisations in Wales to deliver the exhibition including work with student composers at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and the significant artist-run gallery G39 who will deliver an integrated programme of professional development and public engagement in Wales.” Audiences in Wales will also have the chance to experience two associated exhibitions of James’ work at Chapter: a group show organised by the artist and featuring works by national and international artists, and then the Wales in Venice exhibition itself as it tours to Cardiff in early 2018. Cymru yn Fenis Wales in Venice is commissioned and managed by the Arts Council of Wales and Wales Arts International with support and collaboration from the Welsh Government and British Council.

Dan Rees, Nomas Foundation, Road Back to Relevance
chapter.org
Artist In Residence: Dan Rees This month we are pleased to be hosting a threeweek residency with artist Dan Rees. Selected from hundreds of international applications, Swansea-born Dan will be provided with space in both Cardiff and Venice in order to investigate the past and present relationship between the port cities and their hinterlands. Based here at Chapter he will explore South Wales and the inland waterways of Cardiff. Based at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation, Venice, he will research the less well-known history of the waterways and canals that feed the city from the surrounding areas of Northern Italy and the port links to the rest of the world. “I am delighted to take part in the Venice Cardiff Artist residency; the cultural significance of the waterways in the two cities offers a hugely rich source of material from which to begin an important reexamination and reinterpretation of their respective legacies and futures.” Dan Rees About the artist Dan Rees (b. 1982 Swansea, UK) lives and works in London and Berlin. Rees studied at the Staatliche Hochschule fur Bildende Künste Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main 2007-9, and graduated from Camberwell College of Arts, London in 2004. He has exhibited internationally in solo and group exhibitions, solo shows include ‘Road Back To Relevance’, Nomas Foundation, Rome (2016); ‘Think Local, Act Global’, MOT International, Brussels (2015); ‘Stimulate Surprise’, Tanya Leighton, Berlin (2015); ‘Kelp’,
National Museum Cardiff and MOSTYN, Llandudno, Wales (2013); ‘Gravel Master’, Goss Michael Foundation, Dallas (2013); ‘Top Heavy’, T293, Rome (2013); ‘High Tea’, Shane Campbell Gallery, Chicago (2013). Group exhibitions include 13th Fellbach Triennial of Small-Scale Sculpture, Germany (forthcoming); Atlante delle immagini e delle forme, GAMeC, Bergamo, (2016); Le Nouveau festival / Extension du domaine du jeu, Espace 315 — Centre Pompidou, Paris, (2015); THE GO-BETWEEN, Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, Naples, (2014). About the Residencies This opportunity is developed by Addo, Glandŵr Cymru — the Canal & River Trust in Wales and the Arts Council of Wales. Glandŵr Cymru has teamed up with the Arts Council of Wales to create a three-year programme of seven artists’ residencies across Welsh waterways. This partnership will highlight not only the heritage and historic significance of Wales’ canals, but also celebrate and increase their current relevance to local communities and contemporary Welsh culture. The charity is exploring how contemporary arts can play a new role in conserving, animating and re-interpreting the waterways in Wales. An exhibition in 2017 will bring together all the research by the seven artists.

ART IN THE BAR
Lorna Macintyre Preview: Thu 7 July Exhibition: Fri 1 — Mon 25 July To accompany the forthcoming gallery exhibition Sticky Intimacy: Katie Cuddon, Emma Hart & Nicholas Pope, Scottish artist Lorna Macintyre has taken a series of photographs of Nicholas Pope’s house and studio in Herefordshire. The silver gelatin prints offer an oblique documentation of his work, and present a portrait of an artist through an idiosyncratic landscape of objects, as much as through the work. The lyrical photographs gesture towards his influence, forming a type of formal and conceptual reverberation across generations.
About the artist Lorna Macintyre (Born in 1977, Glasgow, Scotland). Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Material Language Or All Truth Waits In All Things’, Mary Mary, Glasgow, ‘Solid Objects’, Glasgow Project Room (both 2015) and ‘Four Paper Fugues’, Mount Stuart, Bute (part of Generation, 25 years of Contemporary Art in Scotland) (2014). Recent group exhibitions include ‘Surface Tension’, Streetlevel Photoworks, Glasgow, ‘Representing Space’, CCA Andratx, Mallorca (2015), ‘Polarity and Resonance’, Sammlung Lenikus, Vienna and ‘Dirt and Not Copper’, 221a, Vancouver. Lorna is represented by Mary Mary, Glasgow. The exhibition was originally commissioned by NGCA and has been kindly supported by Elephant Trust, Arts Council England and Sunderland City Council.

All around him people are drinking too much, dancing until the early hours and getting it while they can. But when Lee receives an invitation to a friend’s house-warming everything seems ripe for change, and it only takes seven hours, a bottle of vodka, and the devil on his shoulder for him to break his promise and fall back into the arms of a new admirer. Saturday Night Forever follows Lee on a journey through the wreckage of past relationships and the early stages of a promising new love affair. For a short while life is sweet, but after every Saturday night comes the cold reality of Sunday morning, and as Lee cruelly discovers, nothing lasts forever.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Fri 8 + Sat 9 July 7pm Matinee on Sat 9 July 2.30pm The South-West’s much loved physical comedy theatre company Le Navet Bete are back this season with their sell out successful take on the classic tale, ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’. Join Dorothy and Toto on their fantastical and downright chaotic travels along the Road of Yellow Bricks meeting the usual (sort of) suspects along the way — an unbelievably idiotic Scarecrow, a Tin Man straight from under the Iron Curtain and a Lion whose West-End dreams seem just Over the Rainbow — and the odd unexpected character. Will they make it to the Emerald City or will the Mighty Oz and his Green Army stop them in their tracks? Will Shirley the Wicked Witch of the West be more wicked than you could ever imagine? The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is co-produced by Le Navet Bete and Barbican Theatre Plymouth. Prepare yourselves for a physical comedy bonanza of ridiculous characters, live music and song, hilarious dances, utter stupidity and much, much more. This really is a long, long way from Kansas... £13/£11 Age 4+

Over the last few years Chapter has been working on a collaborative research project with Kerrie Reading from Aberystwyth University which has examined the wealth of material held in the Chapter archive. A number of interviews have been conducted with Chapter’s founders, artists and some of the companies who have been involved since the 1970s. This work has given us an important insight into the emergence of new infrastructures for the alternative British performance and theatre scene of the 1970s and the impact these had on the development of local audience communities. Featuring a short presentation on the research project and a Q&A session with some of Chapter’s founders. This is a free event, but places must be reserved. Bad Film Club Piranha Sun 3 July USA/2010/88mins/18. Dir: Alexandre Aja.
As the 10th anniversary of The Bad Film Club rolls towards its summer break it seems only fair to leave on a high and you can’t get much higher than a film chocked full of boobs and piranhas. Piranha mixes the acting ability of Kelly Brook with the CGI capabilities of a teenager on an iPad but it’s a non stop roller-coaster of killer fish and bare flesh which is guaranteed to brighten up the summer. Spring break will never be the same again after thousands of killer piranha are woken from their watery slumber and are chomping their way through the locals at a break neck speed.
In the summer of 1983 just days before the birth of his first son, writer and theologian John Hull went blind. In order to make sense of the upheaval in his life, he began keeping a diary on audiocassette. With access to these extraordinary recordings, this elegant documentary encompasses dreams, memory and imaginative life, excavating the interior world of blindness.
The Daughter Fri 8 — Thu 14 July Australia/2015/95mins/15. Dir: Simon Stone. With: Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, Anna Torv.
The skeletons of two families are hauled out of the closet with the arrival of Christian, returning for the marriage of his father Henry to a younger woman. He bumps into old pal Oliver and spends time with his family, encouraging one of them to spill the beans on a long-buried secret. Reconfiguring Ibsen’s ‘The Wild Duck’, this is a close-knit drama and mood piece told with a lyrical energy both lush and dangerous. + Join us for a post screening discussion with our Adaptations group on Mon 11 July. A group of soldiers have fallen ill with a mysterious kind of sleeping sickness. Cared for at a hospital, a young volunteer claims that they have disturbed an ancient cemetery of kings. Like the soldiers, the volunteers in the eerie hospital become living ghosts enacting an uncanny, calm sort of hysteria, in this crystalline meeting of the magical and the mundane.
Eye in the Sky Fri 15 — Thu 21 July UK/2016/102mins/15. Dir: Gavin Hood. With: Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman, Barkhad Abdi, Aaron Paul, Jeremy Northam.
In a shanty town in Kenya terrorist group al–Shabaab are reportedly setting up a meeting. Kenyan military forces, aided by the US and UK military drone technology, begin reconnaissance. From the perspective of individuals involved in the larger political game we see inside the mission: a stern colonel at the UK army base; drone pilots in Nevada; the ministers in the political machine and the agents on the ground in Kenya. A tense, witty screenplay and wonderful cast (including the final performance from Alan Rickman) culminates in a thought–provoking thriller about one of the most morally dubious activities of the modern age.
A group of youths in an underground punk band take a gig at a neo-Nazi bar despite initial reservations. After a tense performance, they prepare to leave only to stumble upon a dead body and are forced to barricade themselves in the green room at the mercy of a pack of backwood brutalists in a riotous, roughhewn punk re-invention of 70s style grindhouse exploitation cinema.

Florence Foster Jenkins Fri 8 — Thu 14 July
UK/2016/110mins/PG. Dir: Stephen Frears. With: Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant, Simon Helberg.
A gentle look at the true story of the New York socialite who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great opera singer. The voice she heard in her head was beautiful, but to everyone else it was hilariously awful. Her partner St. Clair Bayfield, an aristocratic English actor, was determined to protect his beloved from the truth. When Florence decides to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall, St. Clair must face his greatest challenge.

Private John Ball and his comrades in the Royal Welch Fusiliers are posted to the Somme. In Mametz Wood they enter a strange realm — outside of time, dreamlike but deadly. Clockwise from top left: Ivan’s Childhood, Andrei Rublev, Solaris
chapter.org
Tarkovsky Retropective: Sculpting Time One of world’s most visionary, celebrated and influential filmmakers, Andrei Tarkovsky made just seven features before his tragically early death at the age of 54. Characterised by metaphysical and spiritual explorations of the human condition, each film is an artistic masterpiece of extraordinary visual beauty and stand as enduring classics of world cinema.
Ivan’s Childhood

Russia/1962/93mins/subtitles/12A. Dir: Andrei Tarkovsky. With: Nikolay Burlyaev, Valentin Zubkov, Evgeniy Zharikov.
Russia/1972/166mins/subtitles/12A. Dir: Andrei Tarkovsky. With: Natalya Bondarchuk, Donatas Banionis, Jüri Järvet .
Sun 3 + Tue 5 July
Determined to avenge his family’s death at the hands of the Nazis, 12 year old Ivan joins a Russian partisan regiment as a scout, where he becomes indispensable for his ability to slip unnoticed through enemy lines. But as his missions become increasingly dangerous, it is decided that he must be removed from the front line. Ivan resists and convinces his commanding officers to allow him to carry out one last expedition. Winner of the 1962 Venice Golden Lion
Andrei Rublev Sun 10 + Tue 12 July
Russia/1969/174mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Andrei Tarkovsky. With: Anatoliy Solonitsyn, Ivan Lapikov, Nikolay Grinko.
Widely regarded as Tarkovsky’s finest film, Andrei Rublev charts the life of the great icon painter through a turbulent period of 15th-century Russian history which was marked by endless fighting between rival Princes and Tatar invasions. Made on an epic scale, it does not flinch from portraying the savagery of the time, from which, almost inexplicably, the serenity of Rublev’s art arose. The great set pieces — the sack of Vladimir, the casting of the bell, the pagan ceremonies of St. John’s Night and the Russian crucifixion — are tours-de-force of visceral filmmaking.
Sun 17 + Tue 19 July
On a space station orbiting the oceancovered planet Solaris, cosmonaut Kris Kelvin arrives to investigate a series of mysterious and bizarre occurrences among the crew. What he discovers are supernatural phenomena that cause repressed and haunting memories to take on physical form, including that of Kelvin’s late wife. Through her, Kelvin attempts to communicate with the forces responsible which appear to be emanating from the mysterious planet itself.

From L to R: Maggie’s Plan, Embrace of the Serpent
26
Maggie’s Plan Fri 22 — Thu 28 July USA/2015/99mins/15. Dir: Rebecca Miller. With: Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke, Julianne Moore, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph.
Maggie’s plan to have a baby on her own is derailed when she falls in love with John, a married man, destroying his volatile marriage to the brilliant Georgette. Once the dust settles on the split Maggie realises she may have made a mistake and constructs a new plan to get the couple back together. This witty comedy with an accomplished cast is a pleasingly twisted love triangle.
Men and Chicken Fri 15 — Thu 21 July Denmark/2015/102mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Anders Thomas Jensen. With: David Dencik, Mads Mikkelsen, Nikolaj Lie Kaas.
Socially-challenged siblings Gabriel and Elias discover that they are adopted half-brothers in their late father’s videotaped will. They journey to the small Danish island of Ork to find their true father, only to stumble upon three other half-brothers also sporting hereditary harelips and lunatic tendencies living in a dilapidated mansion overrun by barn animals. This warped family portrait with a farcical Kafkaesque theme has sweetness at its core.
Chevalier Fri 29 July — Thu 4 Aug Greece/2016/105mins/subtitles/18. Dir: Athina Rachel Tsangari. With: Giannis Drakopoulos, Kostas Filippoglou, Yiorgos Kendros.
In the middle of the Aegean Sea, six men on a fishing trip on a luxury yacht decide to play a game. An absurdist comedy with an intriguing and fascinating study of competitive spirit where friendships are tested with flaws scrutinised.
Embrace of the Serpent Fri 22 — Thu 28 July Colombia/2015/122mins/subtitles/12A. Dir: Ciro Guerra. With: Nilbio Torres, Jan Bijvoet, Antonio Bolivar.
Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and last survivor of his people guides two scientists to search the Amazon for a sacred healing plant. In two time periods parallel expeditions expose the effects of imperialism in this enthralling, psychedelic historical adventure about the colonialization of the Amazon.
The Commune Fri 29 July — Thu 4 Aug Denmark/2015/112mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Thomas Vinterberg. With: Ulrich Thomsen, Trine Dyrholm, Fares Fares.
In 1970s Copenhagen middle-class, middle-aged Anna and Erik inherit a large house and decide to move in with their teenage daughter Freja and turn the home into a commune with their professional friends and acquaintances. But having set off down this bold route of solidarity and tolerance they find their personal lives reaching a crisis. An engaging drama with incredible central performances.

Japan/2008/101mins/U. Dir: Hayao Miyazaki. With: Noah Cyrus, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Liam Neeson.
Sophie works in a hat-shop, humbly believing herself to be plain, until her life is turned upside down when she is rescued from two boorish soldiers by Howl, a notorious wizard rumoured to eat the hearts of young maidens. The jealous and jowly Witch of the Waste casts a spell on her, turning her into a crone. Determined to reverse the curse, she embarks upon Howl’s clambering moving castle accompanied by an animated scarecrow.
Sweet natured Sosuke finds a goldfish called Ponyo trapped in a jar by the beach. When he cuts himself on the glass, the fish licks him better and reveals herself to be the daughter of the king of the ocean, drawing him under the waves to a hidden enclave of neon-hued aqualife. Yet their blossoming friendship is threatened by the trenchant reminder of looming ecological catastrophe as Ponyo’s crossing from sea to land upsets the balance of nature.
