05.11.14—09.11.14 Established in 2001, Experimentica is Chapter’s annual five-day Festival of live art. Experimentica hosts a dynamic programme of performance and interdisciplinary projects and offers a significant platform for UK and international artists to produce or introduce their work.
Cover image / Delwedd y clawr: Andre Stitt, Art is not a mirror it’s a fucking hammer, 1978 Inside cover image / Delwedd tu mewn y clawr: Mark Leahy, Answering Machine, 2014
05.11.14—09.11.14 The Festival can be entertaining, dangerous, confusing, life affirming, playful, provocative, witty, engaging, irritating and everything in between. This year’s Festival takes its title from the 2009 science fiction thriller District 9 (directed by Neill Blomkamp), a multi-layered allegory that explores our attitudes to outsiders. The title is not a theme but rather a starting point in which participants can explore how we co-exist.
Sefydlwyd Experimentica, gŵyl bum niwrnod flynyddol Chapter, yn 2001. Mae Experimentica yn cyflwyno rhaglen ddeinamig o gelfyddyd, perfformiadau a phrosiectau rhyngddisgyblaethol byw ac mae’n llwyfan pwysig sy’n caniatáu i artistiaid o Brydain ac o bedwar ban byd gynhyrchu neu gyflwyno eu gwaith.
Gall yr Ŵyl fod yn ddifyr, yn beryglus, yn ddryswch pur, yn wir bob gair, yn chwareus, yn bryfoclyd, yn ffraeth ac yn unrhyw beth arall dan haul. Daw teitl yr Ŵyl eleni o ffilm wyddonias 2009, ‘District 9’ (wedi’i chyfarwyddo gan Neill Blomkamp). Mae’r ffilm honno’n alegori amlhaenog sy’n archwilio ein hagweddau at estroniaid. Nid thema yw’r teitl fel y cyfryw ond man cychwyn sy’n galluogi i gyfranogwyr archwilio syniadau am gyd-fodolaeth.
THROUGHOUT THE FESTIVAL LOLO Y LAUTI: SELF-PORTRAIT SWEATSHOP
8 Duke street Arcade, 12–5pm Self-Portrait Sweatshop is a participatory work inside a shop in Cardiff. Participants have been hired to draw portraits of the artists. They are tied to a workstation in the basement of the shop for an hour. A tutorial video guides them through their shift. At the same time, Lolo y Lauti will run the front of the shop where the drawings will be for sale as self-portraits. www.loloylauti.com Supported by Cardiff Contemporary
good cop bad cop: OCCUPATION
Cardiff City Centre, 12–6pm So today the smell of burning tyres has finally shifted and the sounds of gunshot absent. The bank is back without a blackened facade and the snow drifts have dissolved. The barriers have moved and we can all go shopping. In the background, out of the frame and away from the lights, they wait for their scheduled appearance. They know what it is to kill time and have come prepared. They’re just going to follow the rules and then they will get paid. Keep their heads down. Make no eye contact. Don’t ask questions. Strictly no autographs. Any minute now. Hopefully get home on time. Last week victims of the flood. Yesterday, rampaging masses. Something to show the grandkids. But for now there’s nothing. There’s no one. They’re not there. It’s not happening. Nothing to see. Cue the animals. And... Action! Occupation... a ten letter word, starting with ‘O’ and ending with ‘n’. A series of invisible pieces to be found in the city that could be Cardiff by good cop bad cop. www.gcbccentral.com A Cardiff Contemporary commission
DRWY GYDOL YR ŴYL BETH GREENHALGH & JOHN ABELL MURDER BALLAD: AN ELEGY
CARDIFF CITY CENTRE, 12–5pm (Every artist has used a bath) The bathroom had remained ordinary. Without presence. The bathroom had been used for cleansing, clearing, thinking and excreting. A spider enters the bathroom. It clambers through a plughole. The spider moves through the bath: there is nothing to ruin here. The spider has thoughts of making something beautiful. Its imagination creeps and builds up slowly, Nothing is made. A girl enters the bathroom, she is aware of the spider; upon seeing it she moves it into a cupboard. She runs a bath and begins a conversation with the spider. She tells him: “Adding tomatoes to my bath will remove impurities from my skin and hair.” She talks. The spider listens, but is mostly uninterested and begins making a web. He continues making the web. The web is never ruined. johnabell.blogspot.co.uk intangiblestudio.co.uk/ipfc/beth-greenhalgh/
THERE THERE: TEXT HOME TO 78070
Popping up at Chapter and in Cardiff City Centre Text HOME to 78070 is inspired by the infamous Home Office campaign of 2013 and is a spoken word concept album. It has one goal: to help newcomers to the EU to integrate, assimilate and infiltrate into the UK as they advise about everything from marrying for money and subverting the NHS, to scamming your way to a work permit. An invaluable manual for urgent immigration advice, Text HOME will take over Experimentica and Cardiff when you least expect it! www.therethere.eu
LOLO Y LAUTI: SELF-PORTRAIT SWEATSHOP
8 ArcÊd Stryd y Dug 12–5pm Mae Self-Portrait Sweatshop yn waith cyfranogol wedi’i osod mewn siop yng Nghaerdydd. Cyflogwyd cyfranogwyr i greu portreadau o’r artistiaid. Maent yn gaeth i orsaf waith yn seler y siop am awr gyfan. Mae tiwtorial fideo yn eu tywys drwy eu gwaith. Ar yr un pryd, bydd Lolo y Lauti yn gyfrifol am flaen y siop, lle bydd y lluniau yn cael eu gwerthu fel hunan-bortreadau. www.loloylauti.com Gyda chefnogaeth Caerdydd Gyfoes
good cop bad cop: OCCUPATION
Canol Dinas Caerdydd 12–6pm Mae arogl y teiars llosg wedi diflannu o’r diwedd ac mae ergydion y gynnau wedi tewi. Does yna ddim façade du gan y banc mwyach ac mae’r eira wedi toddi. Mae’r rhwystrau wedi eu codi a gallwn fynd eto bob un i siopa. Yn y cefndir, allan o’r ffrâm ac ymhell o’r goleuadau, maent yn aros i wneud eu hymddangosiad. Maent yn gwybod sut mae lladd amser ac maen nhw wedi paratoi. Maen nhw’n mynd i ddilyn y rheolau ac yna fe gânt eu talu. Cadw eu pennau i lawr. Osgoi edrych i fyw llygaid unrhyw un. Ymatal rhag gofyn cwestiynau. Dim llofnodion. Unrhyw funud nawr. Cyrraedd adref ar amser gydag ychydig o lwc. Yr wythnos ddiwethaf, roeddent yn ddioddefwyr llifogydd. Ddoe, yn dyrfa wyllt. Rhywbeth i ddangos i’r wyrion a’r wyresau. Ond, am y tro, does yna ddim byd. Does yna neb i’w weld. Dydyn nhw ddim yno. Does dim yn digwydd. Does yna ddim byd i’w weld. Anifeiliaid yn barod ... “Action”! ‘Occupation’ ... gair deg llythyren sy’n dechrau ag ‘O’ ac yn gorffen ag ‘n’. BETH GREENHALGH & JOHN ABELL MURDER BALLAD: AN ELEGY
CANOL DINAS CAERDYDD, 12-5PM (Mae pob artist wedi defnyddio bath) Mae’r ystafell ymolchi yn ddigon cyffredin o hyd. Yn wag. Cafodd yr ystafell ymolchi ei defnyddio ar gyfer glanhau, clirio, meddwl ac ysgarthu. Mae pry cop yn mynd i mewn i’r ystafell ymolchi. Mae’n dringo i mewn drwy ddraen. Mae’r pry cop yn symud drwy’r bath: does yna ddim byd i’w ddifetha fan hyn. Mae’r pry cop yn awyddus i greu rhywbeth hardd. Mae ei ddychymyg yn datblygu’n raddol. ‘Chaiff dim byd ei greu. Mae merch yn mynd i mewn i’r ystafell ymolchi. Mae hi’n ymwybodol o’r pry cop; ar ôl ei weld, mae hi’n ei osod mewn cwpwrdd. Mae hi’n rhedeg bath ac yn dechrau sgwrs gyda’r pry cop. Mae hi’n dweud wrtho: “Bydd ychwanegu tomatos at ddŵr fy math yn gwaredu’r amhureddau o’m croen a’m gwallt.” Mae hi’n siarad. Mae’r pry cop yn gwrando, ond does dim llawer o ddiddordeb ganddo ac mae’n bwrw ‘mlaen â chreu gwe. Mae e’n parhau i nyddu ei we. Ni chaiff y we ei difetha. johnabell.blogspot.co.uk intangiblestudio.co.uk/ipfc/beth-greenhalgh/

THURSDAY 6 NOVEMBER NATHAN WALKER: S C A W
COMMON ROOM, 12–8PM S C A W is an eight-hour install-action exploring unsighted automatic writing, circular actions and permutational mouthings. Following a score of a pre-recorded spoken text, generated through computational chance procedures, the work superimposes the private performance of reading onto the public performance of writing. Writing occurs in S C A W through the body and appears as graphic, visual, phonic and sonic actions. www.nathan-walker.co.uk
LUCIE AKERMAN & SAMUEL PLAYFORDGREENWELL: TOWARDS A CAVENDISH GROUP SIGIL
MEDIA POINT, 6PM Following a fictional internet-based banana cult, the Cavendish Group — named after the banana — the group derive much of their structure and cosmological beliefs from the banana plant itself. Using a combination of improvised conversation, ritualised incantation and banana-related props and imagery, the performance will take in diverse subjects, from the notion of ‘Radical Chic’ and the ideology of style, to ventriloquism and demonic possession; from the affective quality of wallpaper, to Hegel’s notion of the ‘end of history’. samplayfordgreenwell.wordpress.com
Dydd Iau 6 Tachwedd CIAN DONNELLY: BLEACH BOX
STIWDIO, 7PM Bleach Box is an experimental performance, structured as a series of vignettes that move between poetic narrative, experimental pop, and hallucinatory entertainment. An intensely visual and aural experience, Bleach Box stages the self as a psychosexual ghost story. www.ciandonnelly.com
GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN: NUMBER 1, THE PLAZA
THEATRE, 9PM Red front door. Gold number 1. Tiny peephole. Take a look around. GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN want to open up and let you in. Right in. So you can really get a feeling for what it’s like on the inside. This is an ‘evening with’ — conversation, songs, shit like that. Someone’s left a passive aggressive note on the kitchen table; it’s about entitlement, property and privacy. Welcome to the show home, everyone. Conceived and devised by the company. Performed by Lucy McCormick and Jennifer Pick. Directed by Hester Chillingworth. Co-produced by PACT Zollverein (Essen), Colchester Arts Centre and Cambridge Junction. Yn dilyn sgôr o destun llafar wedi’i recordio ymlaen llaw ac a gynhyrchwyd â chyfres o weithrediadau cyfrifiadurol ar hap, mae’r gwaith yn arosod syniad o ddarllen fel perfformiad preifat ar syniad o ysgrifennu fel gweithred gyhoeddus. Mae ‘ysgrifennu’ yn S C A W yn digwydd drwy’r corff ac yn ymddangos ar ffurf gweithredoedd graffig, gweledol, ffonig a sonig. www.nathan-walker.co.uk
LUCIE AKERMAN & SAMUEL PLAYFORDGREENWELL: TOWARDS A CAVENDISH GROUP SIGIL
PWYNT CYFRYNGOL, 6PM Gan ddilyn cwlt ar-lein sy’n seiliedig ar fananas, mae Grŵp Cavendish — a enwyd ar ôl math o fanana — yn tynnu rhan helaeth o’u strwythur a’u credoau cosmolegol o’r planhigyn banana ei hun. Trwy gyfuniad o sgwrsio byrfyfyr, llafarganu defodol a phropiau a delweddaeth yn ymwneud â bananas, bydd y perfformiad yn trafod pynciau amrywiol, o’r syniad o ‘Radical Chic’ ac ideoleg arddull, i daflu’r llais a meddiant gan ddiafoliaid; o nodweddion affeithiol (‘affective’) papur wal, i syniadau Hegel am ‘ddiwedd hanes’. samplayfordgreenwell.wordpress.com
CIAN DONNELLY: BLEACH BOX
STIWDIO, 7PM Mae Bleach Box yn berfformiad arbrofol, wedi’i strwythuro fel cyfres o vignettes sy’n pendilio rhwng naratif barddonol, pop arbrofol ac adloniant rhith-weledol. Mae Bleach Box yn brofiad gweledol a chlywedol dwys ac yn llwyfannu’r hunan fel rhyw fath o stori ysbryd seicorywiol. www.ciandonnelly.com

FRIDAY 7 NOVEMBER MARK LEAHY: ANSWERING MACHINE
CINEMA, 12PM Our words are not only our own, in some way they are always already others’, always already used. We are subject to controls or forces outside or beyond ourselves, and we function in language that both is and is not ours. Answering Machine places the performer at the mercy of the audience or participants, as they determine what he says. Participants will be invited to text or tweet a question, instruction, or statement to the performer. Using an online search engine and text-to-speech software this will be converted to an audio stream that will be delivered to the performer via headphones from which he will then attempt to speak as much of the material as he can. New input displaces the question being responded to; a conversation develops. Struggling to answer, the performer is a mix of oracle and puppet. Operated by the participants who contribute their offerings. His stammers and sputters elicit further prompts from the listeners as he is turned into an automated speaker. www.markleahy.net
CATHY GORDON: HAMMER THE HISTORY OF CATHY GORDON’S ANGER — SIX STRATEGIES FOR SUBLIMATION
COMMON ROOM, 2PM Interweaving personal facts and fictions, HAMMER offers ‘processing techniques’ for rage while exploring compliance, feminism, and social responsibility. The audience starts at a safe distance and then slowly succumbs to a final act of trust. www.cathygordon.com
ADRIENNE WONG & DUSTIN HARVEY: LANDLINE CARDIFF TO HALIFAX
CWTCH, 3–6.45PM Landline is a shared experience for two people on opposite sides of the country. The piece uses city streets, cell phone technology and poetic suggestion to engage audience members in a game of unlikely rendezvous. Inspired by the playful idea of drifting around urban environments, Landline was created to make the city come alive through audience interaction. By establishing a carefully choreographed sequence of events, the project encourages people to become performers in an imaginary play, while creating an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. The artists are experimenting with strategies to allow audience members to assume the roles of both viewer and performer. LANDLINE: Cardiff to Halifax created by Dustin Harvey and Adrienne Wong produced by Neworld Theatre and Secret Theatre co presented with Zuppa Theatre 4,419km away in Halifax, Nova Scotia. www.dustinharvey.com
Dydd Gwener 7 Tachwedd PHIL HESSION: A VERSION OF BARBARA ALLEN
STIWDIO, 6PM Phil Hession uses a self-built record cutting lathe, live song and YouTube videos to create a mash-up of the traditional ballad ‘Barbara Allen’. Phil takes on the dual roles of performer and archivist, layering sound and visuals in a performance that draws comparisons between oral song tradition and the open source nature of YouTube performances. www.philhession.com
HARANCZAK/NAVARRE PERFORMANCE PROJECTS: CONTROL SIGNAL — A DUET BY KAREN CHRISTOPHER & SOPHIE GRODIN
THEATRE, 9PM Control Signal explores invisible influences and the inexplicable connections we feel but fail to acknowledge. It explores our irresistible urge to impose our will upon our immediate surroundings; upon nature. We are tied to each other, to objects we hold dear, to ideas. We are moved: we are pulled toward and we are pushed away. Following lines of electricity through the body, through the air, and through history this show looks at the long and the short distances electricity travels and how humans have used it as a measure of control. We send a ripple with a facial expression. We move the air. We lean. We push. We fall silent. We look at each other or we don’t look at each other. We make a plea. And, in order to bridge the internal and the external, in order to blur boundaries and induce perplexity, in order to undermine stable forms, in order to show the effect of invisible forces, we introduce an uncontrollable vibration. SINEMA, 12PM Nid yn unig y mae ein geiriau yn perthyn i ni ein hunain, maent hefyd yn perthyn eisoes, mewn rhyw ffordd, i eraill; maen nhw eisoes wedi cael eu defnyddio. Rydym yn ddarostyngedig i reolau neu rymoedd y tu hwnt i ni ein hunain; rydym yn defnyddio iaith ac yn bodoli mewn iaith sydd yn perthyn i ni heb fod yn perthyn i ni chwaith. Gwahoddir cyfranogwyr i decstio neu drydar cwestiwn, cyfarwyddyd neu ddatganiad i’r perfformiwr. Gyda chymorth peiriant chwilio ar-lein a meddalwedd testun-i-leferydd, bydd y testun hwn yn cael ei drawsnewid yn llif sain a chwaraeir i’r perfformiwr drwy glustffonau. Wrth iddo wneud ei orau i ateb, bydd y perfformiwr yn gyfuniad o oracl a phyped. Ac yn cael ei weithredu gan y cyfranogwyr eu hunain. Mae’r darn yn defnyddio strydoedd dinesig, technoleg symudol ac awgrymiadau barddonol i gynnwys aelodau’r gynulleidfa mewn gêm o gyfarfyddiadau annhebygol. Wedi’i ysbrydoli gan y syniad chwareus o ddrifftio ar hyd ac ar led dinas, crëwyd Landline er mwyn rhoi bywyd i’r ddinas trwy gyfrwng rhyngweithio â’r gynulleidfa. Drwy sefydlu dilyniant gofalus o ddigwyddiadau, mae’r prosiect yn annog pobl i fod yn berfformwyr mewn drama ddychmygol, a chreu awyrgylch o fyfyrdod tawel. SATURDAY 8 NOVEMBER GAVIN KRASTIN: ROUGH MUSICK
COMMON ROOM, 12PM The practice of ‘Rough Music’ originated in the small villages of medieval England as a means for the public to disgrace and humiliate petty criminals, sexual deviants and ‘others’. Strangely carnivalesque, this public shaming involved the creation of a brutal cacophony of sound and the public would direct this barrage of sound at the chosen individual like a weapon. Fundamentally the public were the ‘Rough Music’. Inspired by these early practices, Gavin Krastin has created a contemporary re-engaging with these dark rituals of exile. A visual and visceral experience unfolds through the brazen clashing of images and activities sourced from Gaelic folklore, Welsh ‘sin eating’ ceremonies, ‘bogey man’ mythologies and psycho-sexual fetish role-playing games. Spectators of this ritual are invited to participate in its unfolding and to become implicit in the dark demonstrations and fantasies. Created by Gavin Krastin Performed by Gavin Krastin and Alan Parker Original sound by Shaun Acker www.gavinkrastin.com Rough Musick was originally commissioned for and by the National Arts Festival, South Africa in 2013. Organised as part of The South African Season in the UK 2014 & 2015. The SA-UK Seasons is a partnership between The Department of Arts and Culture, South Africa and the British Council.
KAREN MIRZA AND BRAD BUTLER: THE EXCEPTION AND THE RULE
TEMPLE OF PEACE, CARDIFF CITY CENTRE, 2PM Mirza and Butler have collaborated with local Cardiff residents to workshop and stage one of Bertolt Brecht’s short ‘learning plays’ ‘The Exception and the Rule’. The ‘rule’ implies a legal language or a directive, while the ‘exception’ evokes being ungovernable or searching for an alternative to either the state or the free market. Together, they act as both a statement that ‘the rule cannot exist without the exception, and a question as to what a state of exception might be. Mirza and Butler encourage you to enter into the project with the spirit of mutual enrichment and collaboration, where personal experiences/ expertise and collective interpretation ultimately converge in the public presentation of the play. www.mirza-butler.net An Artes Mundi 6 commission supported by CHAPTER

ALBERTO RUIZ SOLER & ELEANOR SIKORSKI
STIWDIO, 8PM Eleanor & Alberto are pretty cynical when it comes to love. They didn’t expect their first sweaty collaboration to possess much more romance than a shower-wank. Pushing each other towards physical exhaustion and revealing personal failings and embarrassments along the way, they are both wingmen and divas. As the ‘love story’ rears its head, they relish both the mundane tale and the agonising heartbreak. www.bertruiz.net www.eleanorsikorski.com
THREATMANTICS: THE BALLAD OF SHOTGUN BILLY
THEATRE, 9.30PM The Ballad of Shotgun Billy is the tale of fictional National Football League quarterback and murderer Billy Armstrong. An audio-visual shock and awe rock-opera, the live band accompanies a flood of projected images and video with each song representing a different chapter of Billy’s life. Threatmantics attempt to crowbar as much into rock and roll as possible. Veering wildly from heartbroken folk, to balls-out rock, to spine-crushing metal, to good-time pop — barely held together by very fine thread and pretty ribbons. www.threatmantics.com
IWAN AP HUW MORGAN: THE MYTH OF THE URBAN SHAMAN
CHAPTER, 11pm A new live action work that is both confrontational and introspective, explaining the extreme challenges facing the artist as an apprentice shaman still living in an urban environment. Through intensely ritualised actions, poetry, spoken word and icaros (spirit songs), the audience will witness the constant battles the artist faces as he learns to travel safely between two worlds; the land of the living and the land of the dead, and where the world of myth and legend merges. www.gweld.wordpress.com/iwan-ap-huw-morgan/
GAVIN KRASTIN: ROUGH MUSICK
YSTAFELL GYFFREDIN, 12PM Dechreuodd yr arfer o greu ‘Rough Music’ ym mhentrefi bychain Lloegr y canoloesoedd fel modd i’r cyhoedd ddwyn gwarth a gwaradwydd ar fân-droseddwyr, gwyredigion (‘deviants’) rhywiol ac ‘eraill’. Yn rhyfedd o garnafalaidd, roedd yr arfer o godi cywilydd cyhoeddus yn golygu creu cacoffoni creulon o synau a byddai’r cyhoedd yn cyfeirio’r sŵn at yr unigolyn dan sylw fel arf. Y cyhoedd eu hunain oedd y ‘Rough Music’. Wedi’i ysbrydoli gan yr arferion cynnar hyn, mae Gavin wedi creu fersiwn gyfoes ohonynt ac yn ail-ymwneud â’r defodau tywyll. Yn Rough Musick, mae profiad gweledol ac angerddol yn datblygu drwy gyfrwng gwrthdaro rhwng delweddau a gweithgareddau sy’n tarddu o lên gwerin Gaeleg, seremonïau ‘bwyta pechod’ Cymreig, mytholegau am y ‘dyn drwg’ a gêmau ffetish chwarae rôl seico-rywiol. Gwahoddir gwylwyr y ddefod hon i gymryd rhan yn ei datblygiad ac i ymwneud â’r arddangosiadau a’r ffantasïau tywyll. KAREN MIRZA & BRAD BUTLER: THE EXCEPTION AND THE RULE
Y DEML HEDDWCH, CANOL DINAS CAERDYDD, 2PM Cydweithiodd Mirza a Butler gyda thrigolion Caerdydd er mwyn llwyfannu un o ‘ddramâu dysgu’ byrion Bertolt Brecht, ‘The Exception and the Rule’. Mae’r ‘rheol’ yn awgrymu iaith gyfreithiol neu gyfarwyddeb, tra bod yr ‘eithriad’ yn cyfleu syniad o fod yn anllywodraethol, neu o chwilio am rywbeth i ddisodli’r wladwriaeth neu’r farchnad rydd. Gyda’i gilydd, maent yn ddatganiad, na all y rheol fodoli heb yr eithriad, ac yn gwestiwn hefyd ynghylch union natur yr eithriad hwnnw. Mae Mirza a Butler yn eich annog i ymwneud â’r prosiect ac i ymgyfoethogi a chydweithio, mewn cyd-destun lle mae profiadau/ arbenigeddau personol a dehongliadau ar y cyd yn dod at ei gilydd wrth i’r ddrama gael ei chyflwyno i’r cyhoedd. www.mirza-butler.net Comisiynwyd gan Artes Mundi 6 gyda chefnogaeth CHAPTER

SUNDAY 9 NOVEMBER ANDRE STITT: PERFORMING POLITICAL ACTS: PERFORMANCE ART IN NORTHERN IRELAND: RITUAL, CATHARSIS, AND TRANSFORMATION
CINEMA, 12PM For over forty years artists have been creating performance art in Northern Ireland during a period of traumatic civil conflict. This experimental work, created as a consequence of ‘The Troubles’, is explored through examples of artists’ interventions in an urban environment of civil war. The presentation looks at how artists used ritual and catharsis as a means whereby public artistic testimony, intervention and memorialising might be converted into acts of transformation. The presentation is in two parts and takes the form of a lecture by Andre followed by a film One Inch To The Left focusing on a recent performance by Andre, Alastair MacLennan and Adrian Hall (also known as Triple AAA). In the film they come together again in the city where they first met in the 70s and through live performance, personal archive and frank interviews, the recount their story. www.andrestitt.com One Inch To The Left will premiere at Chapter and is a film by Mutiny Filmhouse productions; directed by Oisin Kearney.
PAUL HURLEY: I FALL TO PIECES
COMMON ROOM, 2–6PM Paul Hurley presents a new work exploring formal interests in abstract movement and performance action, and personal experiences of grief. I fall to pieces comprises a single male figure dancing to Patsy Cline records in an otherwise empty space. The performer is unclothed, untrained (in dance), unrehearsed (for the piece or for death), and has his eyes closed throughout. There is no dialogue, no props, and no choreography beyond the simple score of ‘moving / not moving’. I fall to pieces is inspired by the recent loss of a friend, and by the surges and ripples of pain, love and energy that follow. It is a meditation on the repetition of multiple past losses, as well as those to come. It ventures to the line between life and death, and teeters on that between courage and shame. www.paulhurley.org

DYDD SUL 9 TACHWEDD OFF THE PAGE: CURATED BY SAMUEL HASLER
MEDIA POINT, 4PM Off the page is a regular event where artists and writers exhibit, perform or discuss new work. At these events we try to create an atmosphere of openness and encouragement. We try to work lo-fi with a DIY ethos. The works are usually focused on the use of text within the visual arts. Often this is readings or printed matter, but it has included all sorts of other activity. As part of Experimentica, we are hoping to bring a bit of the ‘unknown’ and ‘unplanned’. We might be seeing somebody’s experiments in a new method of presentation, a side to their practice that they don’t often show, or the first airings of works in progress. We make Off The Page a safe environment to experiment and encourage artists to take risks. Things can get half way and then fail, or we could see something incidental, that we’d never noticed, take on huge significance. Three artists will be presenting their works. It could be calm, it could be chaos, we’ll just have to wait and see.
FLORENCE PEAKE & JONATHAN BALDOCK: APPARITION OF THE PHANTOM LIMBS SOUND SCORE BY IAN WATSON
STIWDIO, 7PM Continuing their recent ongoing collaboration Jonathan Baldock and Florence Peake have created a new work entitled ‘Apparition of the phantom limbs’. Set in a darkly lit room, two dancers (one male and one female) stand on a stage. The performance endeavours to reconfigure these bodies and their ‘humanness’ into abstract art. Using diverse materials — plaster, mod rock, wood, fabrics and others — Baldock and Peake re-cast themselves as absurd alchemists for art making and ritualise the building of sculpture onto the human form. These materials will plaster, encrust and conceal the dancers as the choreographed performance unveils before a live audience. The stage, or space occupied, becomes a form of Renaissance studio gone wrong; deconstructing the heroic and mythic ‘artist’ through the revealing of the making processes. www.jonathan-baldock.com www.florencepeake.com www.uhohwatson.com

ANDRE STITT: PERFORMING POLITICAL ACTS: PERFORMANCE ART IN NORTHERN IRELAND: RITUAL, CATHARSIS, AND TRANSFORMATION
SINEMA, 12PM Ers dros ddeugain mlynedd, bu artistiaid yn creu gweithiau o gelfyddyd perfformio yng Ngogledd Iwerddon yn ystod cyfnod o wrthdaro sifil trawmatig. Caiff y gwaith arbrofol, a grëwyd o ganlyniad i’r ‘Trafferthion’, ei archwilio trwy gyfrwng enghreifftiau o ymyriadau gan artistiaid yng nghyd-destun dinesig rhyfel cartref. Bydd y cyflwyniad yn edrych ar y modd yr aeth artistiaid ati i ddefnyddio defod a chatharsis fel modd o droi tystiolaeth, ymyrraeth a chofio cyhoeddus ac artistig yn weithredoedd trawsnewidiol. Bydd y cyflwyniad mewn dwy ran — darlith gan Andre wedi’i dilyn gan ffilm, One Inch to the Left, sy’n canolbwyntio ar berfformiad diweddar gan Andre, Alastair MacLennan a Adrian Hall (a adwaenir hefyd dan yr enw Triple AAA). Yn y ffilm, dônt at ei gilydd unwaith eto yn y ddinas lle y bu iddynt gyfarfod am y tro cyntaf yn y 70au. Trwy gyfrwng perfformiadau byw, deunydd archif personol a chyfweliadau onest, maent yn adrodd eu stori. www.andrestitt.com Mae One Inch to the Left yn ffilm newydd gan Mutiny Filmhouse, wedi’i chyfarwyddo gan Oisin Kearney.
PAUL HURLEY: I FALL TO PIECES
YSTAFELL GYFFREDIN, 2–6PM Bydd Paul Hurley yn cyflwyno gwaith newydd sy’n archwilio diddordebau ffurfiol mewn symudiad haniaethol a pherfformiad, a phrofiadau personol o alar. Mae ‘I Fall to Pieces’ yn cynnwys un ffigwr gwrywaidd sy’n dawnsio i recordiau Patsy Cline mewn gofod sydd, fel arall, yn wag. Mae’r perfformiwr yn noeth, yn ddibrofiad (heb ei hyfforddi mewn dawns), dyw e ddim wedi ymarfer (nac ar gyfer y darn nac ar gyfer marwolaeth), ac mae ei lygaid ar gau ar hyd y darn. Does yna ddim ddeialog, dim propiau a dim coreograffi y tu hwnt i gyfarwyddyd syml y sgôr i “symud / beidio â symud”. Ysbrydolwyd ‘I Fall to Pieces’ gan y profiad o golli ffrind, a chan yr ymchwydd a’r tonnau o boen, cariad ac egni dilynol. Mae’n fyfyrdod ar golledion niferus yn y gorffennol, yn ogystal â cholledion sydd eto i ddod. Mae’n mentro at y llinell rhwng bywyd a marwolaeth, ac yn pendilio rhwng dewrder a chywilydd. www.paulhurley.org

OFF THE PAGE: WEDI’I GURADU GAN SAMUEL HASLER
PWYNT CYFRYNGOL, 4PM Mae Off the Page yn ddigwyddiad rheolaidd sy’n caniatáu i artistiaid ac awduron arddangos, perfformio neu drafod gwaith newydd. Yn y digwyddiadau hyn, rydym yn ceisio creu awyrgylch agored ac anogol. Rydym yn ceisio mynd ati ag ethos ‘lo-fi’, DIY. Mae’r gweithiau yn canolbwyntio fel arfer ar y defnydd o destun yn y celfyddydau gweledol. Yn aml, mae hyn yn golygu darlleniadau neu ddefnydd o ddeunydd print, ond gall gynnwys hefyd bob math o weithgareddau eraill. Yn rhan o Experimentica, rydym yn gobeithio cyflwyno elfen ‘anhysbys’ a rhywfaint o anhrefn i bethau. Mae’n bosib y gwelwn arbrofion rhywun â dull newydd o gyflwyno, neu agwedd ar eu gwaith nad ydynt yn ei dangos fel arfer, neu fe allem gael cipolwg cynnar ar waith ar y gweill. Rydym yn ceisio sicrhau bod Off the Page yn ofod diogel ar gyfer arbrofi a thrwy hynny annog artistiaid i gymryd risgiau. Gall pethau gyrraedd rhyw bwynt penodol cyn methu neu fe allem sylwi ar fanylyn newydd, annisgwyl a hwnnw’n cymryd arno arwyddocâd enfawr. Bydd tri artist yn cyflwyno eu gwaith. Fe allai’r sesiwn fod yn dawel neu fe allai pethau fod yn anhrefn llwyr — bydd yn rhaid i ni aros i gael gweld.
FLORENCE PEAKE & JONATHAN BALDOCK: APPARITION OF THE PHANTOM LIMBS SGÔR SAIN GAN IAN WATSON
STIWDIO, 7PM Bydd Jonathan Baldock a Florence Peake yn parhau â’u cydweithrediad diweddar er mwyn creu gwaith newydd o’r enw ‘Apparition of the phantom limbs’. Mewn ystafell dywyll, mae dau ddawnsiwr (dyn a menyw) yn sefyll ar lwyfan. Nod y perfformiad yw ad-drefnu’r cyrff hyn a’u ‘dynolrwydd’ a’u troi yn gelfyddyd haniaethol. Â chymorth deunyddiau amrywiol — plastr, roc mod, pren, ffabrigau ac yn y blaen — bydd Baldock a Peake yn eu hail-ddiffinio’u hunain fel alcemyddion abswrd er mwyn creu celfyddyd a defodoli’r broses o greu cerflun ar ffurf ddynol. Bydd y deunyddiau hyn yn plastro ac yn cuddio’r dawnswyr wrth i’r perfformiad fynd rhagddo o flaen cynulleidfa fyw. A homeless drifter discovers a reason for the ever-widening gap between rich and poor: a conspiracy by aliens who have infiltrated American society in the guise of wealthy yuppies. With the help of special sunglasses that reveal the aliens’ true faces and their subliminal messages put out in the media our hero tries to stop the invasion. A hugely entertaining satire on modern capitalism.

Uk/1960/75mins/12. Dir: Wolf Rilla. With: George Sanders, Barbara Shelley, Martin Stephens.
One morning in the village of Midwich every resident suddenly falls asleep and then, just as suddenly, everyone wakes up, unaffected by the phenomenon except that every woman of childbearing years has become pregnant. The babies are born at precisely the same moment and all look the same. One of the fathers notices that the children possess powers far beyond those of ordinary mortals and deduces that they must be stopped. One of the most influential films of the 1960s.

Un bore ym mhentref Midwich, mae pob un o’r trigolion yn cwympo i gysgu cyn deffro eto mor sydyn bob tamaid. Dydyn nhw ddim fel petaent wedi’u heffeithio gan y ffenomenon — ar wahân i’r ffaith bod pob menyw sy’n ddigon hen i gael plant bellach yn feichiog.
