THROUGHOUT THE FESTIVAL TIM ETCHELLS: SOME IMPERATIVES

CAFFI BAR, 10am–10pm Some Imperatives is a durational performance and intervention. It comprises a sequence of short texts painted by a lone performer. PEOPLE SHOULD CLOSE THEIR EYES WHILE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEED JUST TO SEE WHAT IT FEELS LIKE PEOPLE SHOULD ASK THEMSELVES ONCE AND FOR ALL WHICH SIDE THEY ARE ACTUALLY ON Some Imperatives presents a series of contradictory and poetic slogans, demands for change, absurd action and protest, philosophical reflection and political re-thinking. Each text — a declaration chosen by the performer from a long list provided by the artist — is painted on a wall and then later painted out, only to be replaced by a new text. Through this ongoing and somewhat circular process the location for the work accumulates a residue or trace of previous writings as well as displaying the most recent addition of text. Typically the graffiti slogan is a statement (and act) of certainty and conviction — a singular demand, a bold if impromptu statement — in Some Imperatives it is revealed as part of an inconstant, wavering process — a speaking and unspeaking, a writing, erasing and rewriting that reflects the city, its contradictory dreams and its shifting possibilities. www.timetchells.com

DRWY GYDOL YR ŴYL GEORGE BARBER: AKULA DREAM

GALLERY George Barber rose to prominence in the 1980s as a pioneer of the Scratch Video movement which sampled clips from Hollywood films, using the untried sampling technology of the day to create an unprecedented orchestration of sound, vision, repeat edits and rhythm. Since then, Barber has developed a large and varied body of work, incorporating found footage, performative monologues and narrative films. Chapter is delighted to present a solo exhibition entitled ‘George Barber: Akula Dream’. The centrepiece is a new work — of the same name — that features an old Russian submarine, armed with ballistic nuclear missiles, and a new captain; yet Captain Pavel seems to care very little for practical matters or protocol. In fact, he dresses in a cassock, grows a long beard, and practices shamanic drumming. On this strange, unspecified mission, Captain Pavel and the crew begin to project out into the world to see their future and everything above the waves in sharp clarity. Fences Make Senses (2014), The Freestone Drone (2013) and Shouting Match (2004–2011) also feature in the exhibition. Barber’s works have been shown at many international festivals, competitions, galleries, have been broadcast on television throughout the world and awarded major prizes. Recently, he has had work shown at Kate MacGarry, Whitechapel Gallery, Split Film Festival (Croatia), Royal Academy, Tate Britain, and Victoria & Albert Museum. He has had retrospectives at the ICA, and Dundee Contemporary Arts. In autumn 2015 he has solo exhibitions at Waterside Contemporary, London and at Young Projects, Los Angeles. GEORGE BARBER: AKULA DREAM

ORIEL Daeth George Barber i amlygrwydd yn y 1980au fel arloeswr gyda mudiad ‘Scratch Video’ a oedd yn cynnwys samplu o ffilmiau Hollywood. Defnyddiodd dechnolegau samplo datblygol y cyfnod i greu trefniannau cerddorfaol digynsail o sain, deunydd gweledol, golygiadau ailadroddus a rhythm. Ers hynny, datblygodd Barber gorff sylweddol ac amrywiol o waith, sydd yn ymgorffori deunydd ffilm hapgael, ymsonau perfformiadol a ffilmiau naratif. Mae Chapter yn falch iawn o gyflwyno arddangosfa unigol o’r enw ‘George Barber: Akula Dream’. Mae darn newydd, â’r un enw, yn ganolbwynt i’r arddangosfa. Yn Akula Dream, mae capten newydd, o’r enw Pavel, yn cymryd cyfrifoldeb dros hen long danfor Akula Rwsiaidd — ond nid yw Capten Pavel fel petai’n poeni’r ormodol am ystyriaethau ymarferol neu brotocol. WEDNESDAY 4 NOVEMBER MIKE PEARSON, JOHN ROWLEY & IAN WATSON TESTIMONY: THE UNITED STATES (1885-1915)

STIWDIO, 12–8PM A live durational reading of American author Charles Reznikoff’s extraordinary poetic text Testimony: The United States (1880-1915). In the early 1930s, Reznikoff began to search through thousands of pages of court transcripts, condensing the details of crimes and misdemeanours into short poems — glimpses of terrible assaults, careless accidents, desolate scenes, unresolved events. In unadorned narratives, without commentary or interpretation or judgement, Reznikoff evokes moods and people and places — a witness to the banality of evil, creating perfect pictures in the mind’s eye. And as they pile up, the poems create a vivid documentary of the underbelly of a troubled nation still coming into being.

DUNCAN BETT & KARIN DIAMOND: YOUR CALL IS IMPORTANT TO US

COMMON ROOM, 5PM Duncan Bett and Karin Diamond have had the honour of being enslaved in telephone call centres as ‘customer care’ representatives (a term as troubling and misleading as ‘military intelligence’). Taking calls from the rudest and kindest people in the UK they have fielded conversations about everything from the wrong bird sound used on The Archers to negotiating compulsory excess on a multi-vehicle premium — whilst being recorded and monitored for quality and control purposes. To save their souls they have begun the therapeutic process of preparing a performative meditation on the dehumanising effects of sticking to the script.

MEDIA POINT, 6PM Off The Page is a regular Chapter event where artists and writers exhibit, perform or discuss new work. At these events we try to create an atmosphere of openness and encouragement. We try to work lo-fi with a DIY ethos. The works are usually focused on the use of text within the visual arts. Often this is readings or printed matter, but it has included all sorts of other activity. As part of Experimentica, we are hoping to bring a bit of the ‘unknown’ and ‘unplanned’. Three artists will be presenting their works. It could be calm, it could be chaos, we’ll just have to wait and see. www.samuelhasler.co.uk

PME-ART: THE DJ WHO GAVE TOO MUCH INFORMATION

THEATRE, 7–10PM The Listening Party takes place at Spillers Records at 1pm on Thursday 5 November. The DJ Who Gave Too Much Information (HOSPITALITY 5) explores the way music — and the stories that surround it — infiltrate our personal and social lives, affecting our ongoing understanding of love, work and how we think society should operate. This ongoing performance allows the audience to come and go freely, have a drink at the bar leave to see a performance and come back again. The day after the performance, the public is also invited to a special encounter called Bring your own Record/Listening Party, where anyone can bring their own record and tell a story of their own in a casual atmosphere, raising every kind of question. Yn y 1930au cynnar, dechreuodd Reznikoff archwilio miloedd o dudalennau o drawsgrifiadau achosion llys, a chrynhoi manylion troseddau er mwyn eu troi yn gerddi byrion — cipolygon ar ymosodiadau ofnadwy, damweiniau esgeulus, golygfeydd truenus, digwyddiadau heb eu datrys. YSTAFELL GYFFREDIN, 5PM Yn gymharol ddiweddar, cafodd Duncan Bett a Karin Diamond y ‘fraint’ o fod yn gaeth mewn canolfannau galw, yn gweithio fel ‘cynrychiolwyr gofal cwsmeriaid’ (term sydd mor broblematig a chamarweiniol â ‘gwybodaeth filwrol’). Fe dderbynion nhw alwadau gan bobl fwyaf anfoesgar a phobl garedicaf y Deyrnas Gyfunol, a chofnodi cwynion am yr adar anghywir yn canu ar The Archers a cheisiadau i ychwanegu gyrwyr arall at bolisïau yswiriant — a’r cyfan wrth iddyn nhw gael eu monitro at bwrpasau ansawdd a rheolaeth. RICHARD BOWERS: AN ESSAY ON MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI’S 1966 FILM, ‘BLOW-UP’

CINEMA 2, 2.30PM Antonioni’s film, Blow Up, portrays a photographer who uses his medium to seek the truth but fails to find it when a group of his blown up photos reveal the body of a murder victim. Flitting disdainfully between social encounters and situations, he is left in a story without resolution. But the basic premise of the film is a lie: enlarging and cropping a photograph progressively reduces the interpretability of the image. However, a degraded image, pushed well beyond its ability to represent a likeness, can still evoke an essence. Richard Bowers interrogates the details in the film to yield textures of beauty and perplexity — sonic and visual blow ups. www.richardbowers.co.uk

DOPPELGANSTER: TITANIC

CHAPTER, 5PM Doppelgangster’s TITANIC has drawn from the screenplay for James Cameron’s 1997 epic Hollywood tear-jerker and a maelstrom of other sources including the Titanic DVD Special Features Disk and eye witness statements of people who actually saw the film at the movies. Cameron’s narrative is subverted by competing historical, fictionalised and completely fantastic accounts, as early 20th Century political spin, media confusion and public anxiety are given voice, amplification and a flare gun. TITANIC is about ‘educated guesses’, ‘operational matters’ and the impossible pursuit of ‘truth’. This most grand spectacle is staged entirely from a shipping container and stars Titanic Director, Cameron; Korean karaoke star Ms Celine Dion; Rose (an actual rose) and reallife, handsome (though slightly aged) Leonardo DiCaprio. www.doppelgangster.com

SARAH DUFFY: ENJOY THE SILENCE

MEDIA POINT, 6.15PM Sarah Duffy is concerned with the practice of belly speaking, or speaking without movement of the lips, which extends far back throughout various religions and spiritual practices, chronicling the complex relationship humans have had with the voice. Women were particularly associated with the practice at its beginnings. Like The Pythia (The Oracle of Delphi) many women who were engaged in spiritual and necromantic practices utilised illusion, cunning and trickery alongside the practice of belly speaking. Fascinated by the history of these lauded and yet often vilified female figures, Duffy set out to learn this discipline for herself. For Experimentica, she will be performing a live ventriloquist version of Depeche Mode’s ‘Enjoy The Silence’; a song that, despite its lyrical eloquence, attempts to persuade the listener of the violence and uselessness of words. www.sarahcduffy.co.uk

GARETH CLARK & AGNIESZKA BLONSKA: (F.E.A.R.)

STIWDIO, 7PM This performance is looking at what we as human beings are afraid of. Our human instinct of fear was developed to keep us safe, aware of predators but our sense of fear has now moved beyond that to irrational and self-made demons that are less about coming face-toface with danger and harm and more to do with losing face. By exploring fear as a concept Clark seeks to address an idea that these so called fears are part of his cultural identity.

Devised in collaboration with Agnieszka Blonska and developed through research from an Arts Council of Wales Creative Wales Award, (F.E.A.R.) explores the life of a middle aged man who has a story.

SLEEPDOGS: THE BULLET AND THE BASS TROMBONE

THEATRE, 8.30PM There’s a concert orchestra trapped in a city during a military coup. As violence erupts, with pitched battles breaking out around them, the orchestra becomes separated — lost — hoping and trying to find their way back to each other. The composer is left to tell the story. With an intricate, fractured narrative and haunting soundtrack, The Bullet and the Bass Trombone is a modern hymn to people and places now lost. The story comes together from the smallest of pieces, like a mosaic: a whistling bird in the jungle; a gunfight on an airport runway; a murder in a forest of music stands. It’s a fugue of voices, memories and sounds, played by a lone performer trying to make sense of the chaos. Sleepdogs is a collaboration between writer/composer Timothy X Atack and producer/director Tanuja Amarasuriya. Mae’r cyflwyniad hwn yn croniclo’r berthynas gymhleth rhwng pobl a’u lleisiau dros y blynyddoedd. Roedd merched yn arbennig yn gysylltiedig â’r arfer ar y dechrau. Fel y Pythia (Yr Oracl Yn Delffi) roedd llawer o fenywod a oedd yn ymwneud ag arferion ysbrydol a necromantig yn defnyddio rhith, cyfrwystra ac ystrywiau ar y cyd â’r arfer o ‘siarad bol’. KATHRYN ASHILL: POSTER BOY

CAFFI BAR, 6.15PM ‘Poster Boy’ is a new body of performance and installation work by Kathryn Ashill that centres on the brooding hero Heathcliff from Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights. The idea focuses on the multiple international representations of this famous male lead in television and film productions. Through the performance Ashill specifically focuses on Cliff Richard’s portrayal of the character. In 1997, at the age of 56, he was critically slammed for taking on a musical version of the role. He then famously refused critics to attend early performances and only at the end of the production’s run did he allow critique.

Dydd Gwener 6 Tachwedd GABRIEL DHARMOO: ANTHROPOLOGIES IMAGINAIRES

THEATRE, 7PM Anthropologies Imaginaires is a solo vocal performance, which interacts with a video mockumentary. The featured ‘experts’ comment on invented vocal traditions demonstrated by the singer-performer. The music is inspired by various odd and/or isolated vocal expressions found across the world, but revisited through imaginary folklore and experimental extended voice techniques. In a reversal of academic lecture conventions, the subject of analysis and scrutiny is physically present on stage, as opposed to the speakers. Anthropologies Imaginaires showcases the virtuosity, versatility and strangeness of the human voice. STIWDIO, 8PM Uro is what remains when the pomp is extracted from a bullfight, its parts deconstructed and examined as individual postures and movements. Reduced to its elements, the bullfight becomes a spectacle imbued with calculated bravado, performed machismo and the unabashed animal body. By stepping into the bodies of both bull and bullfighter, the lines between human and animal are blurred. Underscoring the importance of the relation between our most raw emotions and their connection to tradition, Uro transmits what might be perceived during a bullfight on a physical and visceral level. The contradictory nature of something that can be both gruesome and beautiful is communicated in a manner which opens a dialogue about what the senses perceive and how the body reacts. CARDIFF CITY CENTRE, 11AM — 5PM In Demonstrating the World, Aaron Williamson explores the ‘alien’ or ‘other’ through an absurdly elaborate, live reinterpretation of YouTube ‘How-To’ videos. He enacts everyday tasks such as opening a cupboard, removing a jacket, or sitting on a chair, with detailed stepby-step instructions — both reinforcing and destabilising their apparent familiarity. Demonstrating the World is presented on a purpose-built mobile performance platform that houses a radically displaced domestic interior. HOME TAPING: WITH GEORGE BARBER & RIK LANDER

CINEMA 2, 12PM In the early 1980s, the mainstream media was treated like a giant library to be plundered for provocative play and subversion. Whether by filming their television screens with a Super 8 camera or deftly copying tape-to-tape, artists appropriated and spliced together disparate material to disrupt the dominant ideologies of the age and produce new visual music. The programme features notable examples from the highly influential Scratch Video movement, including the seminal works Tilt and Branson by George Barber, plus films by the Duvet Brothers and Gorilla Tapes. ‘Home Taping’ is one of seven curated film programmes from the major new touring project THIS IS NOW: FILM AND VIDEO AFTER PUNK. Presented by LUX in partnership with the BFI National Archive. STIWDIO, 5PM Shh is a work-in-progress performance. Sparked by an experiment in telling true stories, Shh explores the effects of secrecy and silence on survivors of childhood abuse. Why do survivors carry guilt and shame? Keep abuse secret, sometimes for a lifetime, when the only person to gain from that secrecy is the abuser? Shh is about one man’s journey from silence to speaking out. Initial R&D on this project supported by National Theatre Wales Waleslab.

DAWN WOOLLEY: DOCILE BODIES AND HYSTERICAL SELFIES

COMMON ROOM, 6.15PM In the Salpêtrière hospital in the nineteenthcentury, hysterical gestures were enacted for an audience. By alternating between performances of sexual provocateur and saintly religious devotee the hysterical women brought attention to the artificiality of these identities. The spectacular illness captured the public imagination; representations of hysterics filled the pages of newspapers, novels, and performances on stage and screen. The hysterics became celebrities and their passionate hysterical gestures were transmitted to the public through popular culture. Socially acceptable feminine behaviours took on an aspect of hysteria. Through a process of idealisation and identification the gestures of selfies also become standardised and exaggerated. Perhaps the ‘selfie’ can be interpreted hysterically? In Docile Bodies and Hysterical Selfies Woolley will perform a series of tableau-vivants revealing the gap between ideal and real bodies. OFFSITE, 1PM Seven Falls is a performance for two women, gravity, water, and a couple of canoes. It also includes special guests local to Cardiff and live music by thirteen-year-old Paddy Mackenzie. Seven Falls concerns our preoccupations with safety and the underlying assumptions and reactions that continuous danger and risk assessment have instilled in us. The performance is otherworldly, involves song, has rhythm, and is intended to take your breath on holiday. With a light touch it coaxes out the institutionalised dread and fear that constant disaster preparedness brings, and attempts to declare a new truth that might replace fear mongering and anxiousness. www.karenchristopher.co.uk

DOG KENNEL HILL PROJECT: SHELLEY ON A LOOP

STIWDIO, 2.30PM Shelley on a Loop is an homage to actress Shelley Duval and director Stanley Kubrick’s controversial process of film making in The Shining. The legendary scene, mythologised as having the most recorded takes in filmmaking history — in which Shelley confronts a demonic Jack Nicholson with a baseball bat — is recreated as a live choreography that repeats on a loop as a visual performance. Members of the public are invited to participate in a short instructional session where they can learn Shelley’s intensely dramatic role after which they can enter the looping performance structure for a given duration. DYDD SUL 8 TACHWEDD TOM CASSANI: LETS ALL JUST CALM DOWN

MEDIA POINT, 5PM Cassani is a professional liar occupied with honesty. In this performance he exposes deceptive techniques, teaches how to spot a deception, and takes you up a mountain and onto an iceberg. Investigate Cassani’s relationship with a practice founded on bending the truth. Often using objects and his body Cassani performs actions that appear to make him vulnerable but could simultaneously be an honest act of deception.

PHIL HESSION & PHIL OWEN: I HEAR YOUR VOICE AT THE BACK OF MY THROAT COMMON ROOM, 6PM A song exchange, a relationship between voices, across space and time. Hession and Owen share a deep interest in the traditional or ‘folk’ singing practices of Britain and Ireland. They also share an approach of working with this material primarily as contemporary arts practitioners. In this piece, they explore the ways in which they learn songs, and the affinities they feel towards particular singers. Including recordings, film footage, singing, and conversation.
