Welcome

Happy New Year from everyone at Chapter! We’re kicking off 2016 in our usual style with a great section of film, performance and art to feed your soul through the cold winter months. If you haven’t had a chance to visit George Barber’s Akula Dream in the Gallery (pp4-6) you can catch it until Sun 10 Jan. Check out p8 for a preview of our next show, from painter Rose Wylie. Our Theatre programme kicks off with Jo Fong’s An Invitation… (p11), which began its development here at Chapter, impressed critics at its sold out run in Edinburgh last year and has now been selected for British Dance Edition later this year. We are delighted that our performance spaces are to be renamed thanks to a generous donation from Philippa and David Seligman. The Seligman family have been generous supporters of the arts in Cardiff for many years and Chapter’s board and management are hugely appreciative of their kind gift. Our main theatre will now be known as Theatr Seligman Theatre and the Stiwdio as Stiwdio Seligman. In the Cinema, as well as a raft of Oscar contenders including The Danish Girl (p21) and Joy (p19), we celebrate Dydd Santes Dwynwen with Welsh star-crossed lovers Solomon a Gaenor (p20) and we pay tribute to the original Blonde Bombshell in our Marilyn Monroe season (p23). Thanks for reading and see you soon.

GEORGE BARBER AKULA DREAM Until Sun 10 Jan

Dream Myself Outside: On George Barber One could be forgiven for thinking that there are several video artists named George Barber. Is the maker of Absence of Satan (1985), which arranges sampled fragments of trashy American TV and cinema into an illogical but ominous montage, really the same G. Barber who filmed I Was Once Involved in a Shit Show (2003), a comic, first-person account of a dismal exhibition experience sponsored by a cementworks owner? Can the Barber who made the wordless Automotive Action Painting (2007), a singletake aerial view of cars slaloming creatively through bucketfuls of coloured paint, also be the creator of the CGI-laden, fully scripted Akula Dream (2015)? Well, yes, and the unorthodox attitude is surely no accident, given that Barber’s art itself has, underneath the variation, regularly taken aim at toxic orthodoxies. Akula Dream, for example, feels formally as distant from the Scratch Video approach that Barber pioneered in the 1980s as its characters are from dry land. At the bottom of the ocean, in 1988, in a Soviet nuclear submarine, one Captain Pavel has gone rogue, preoccupied with shamanic drumming and astral travels. The crew are mostly mutinous, and unwilling to join him in thinking beyond their metal box. There are clear suggestions meanwhile that this story has dark metaphorical contours. The crew are informed by their commander, for example, that “humankind is the real nuclear weapon”. One might not subsequently expect a vintage garage number to erupt amid flashing lights, the first of several miniature pop videos, signalling a crewmember’s burgeoning ecological awareness. But that’s what happens. In The Very Very End (2013), Barber again points to his medium’s plastic possibility by somehow travelling into the future and the past, nodding to Neville Shute’s apocalyptic 1957 novel On the Beach (and, again, historical paranoia about nuclear war) while setting an end-of-days story in a 21st-century holiday resort. The Freestone Drone (2013), the companion piece to The Very Very End, substitutes a historical anxiety for a contemporary one concerning remote warfare. Here, Barber aims to think past a reflex response while analysing a problematic, not entirely rational hive-mind reaction: drones engender fear today because they represent a mindless, futuristic mode of warfare. Barber, emphasising this, reverses the terms and humanises the drone. He compares it to Thomas the Tank Engine (complete with burst of theme tune), gives it a silly sped-up voice, some humorous lines about how the drone “just happened to blow you up”. Drones, Barber suggests, may not constitute worse weaponry than older examples but they somehow frighten us more, which deserves thinking about. In Fences Make Senses (2014), the artist lays out the blunt realities of migration. Pointed comparisons are made between beans in a lorry (well cared for, because they are consumer products) and people in a lorry (not well cared for at all), and the fact that biscuits are packed so as not to be smashed whereas emigrants, as we know, often die in transit. The reality principle that divides affluent citizens in the West from their sense of responsibility to the poor — on which their affluence rests — is exposed, as are the easy get-out clauses, voiced by Barber’s actors: “Nobody can solve a fifty-million people problem.” In the four Shouting Match films shot in London, Bangalore, Tel Aviv and New Orleans, Barber sets up a situation whose simplicity recalls the pure products of early video art. Two people sit on chairs, on tracks, and yell at each other: assistants assess which one is shouting loudest, and accordingly push them forward or pull them back, in or out of the camera frame. Each locale produces a different kind of preverbal joust, implicitly suggesting that not only are human beings in perpetual conflict that looks ridiculous from a distance; but also, scaling up, nations produce their own kind of aggression. People have been disagreeing since time immemorial, of course. But Barber seems, here, particularly interested in how this might function as allegorical for a consumerist era, a marketplace of attention. An extract from a longer text by Martin Herbert. ART IN THE BAR

Magda Archer #givemeeverythingandnothingbaby Until Sun 24 Jan I once saw a man in pressed cream chinos sitting in an airport departure lounge. He looked very smart, as if enroute to clinching an important account. He stood up at the announcement his gate was boarding, but on walking away, it turned out he had unknowingly sat upon an abandoned chocolate bar. There was a large, brown, melted skidmark down the back of his pants. He had no idea. It shouldn’t be funny, but it was. It was awful, but also hilarious. As a random event, it might have happened to anyone. I was glad it hadn’t happened to me. Someone had to take the fall. The universe will have a little giggle at our expense. If the moment had been captioned, it would have to be ‘SH*T HAPPENS’. Magda Archer is an artist with an eye for these moments of wry banality, from the sweetly melancholic to the needle-piercingly astute. Her paintings, screen prints and related merchandise are

often paired with the typographic commentary of a high street seer: The Oracle of Argos, if you will. ‘Keep ya mouth shut, I want to stay in love with you’, pleads one cartoon puppy of another. ‘Bet your mother works at McDonalds’, in an exchange of playground insults. Or the human condition succinctly summarised in a single sentence… ‘Let’s Talk About Me’. For her new exhibition in the public spaces at Chapter, Archer looks at the pseudo friendships and false promises offered by the internet and social media; supposedly a means of greater connectivity, but actually an isolating and alienating amalgamation of other people’s baby photos. Coming soon…

Rose Wylie Sat 13 Feb — Sun 29 May Rose Wylie’s pictures are bold, occasionally chaotic, often unpredictable, and always fiercely independent, without being domineering. Wylie borrows from first-hand imagery of her everyday life as well as films, newspapers, magazines, and television allowing herself to follow loosely associated trains of thought, often in the initial form of drawings on paper. The ensuing paintings are spontaneous but carefully considered: mixing up ideas and feelings from both external and personal worlds. Rose Wylie was born in 1934 and lives and works in Kent. She studied at Folkestone and Dover School of Art, and at the Royal College of Art. In 2015 Wylie was elected a Senior Royal Academician. A publication accompanies the exhibition and will be available from Chapter in February. A Very Bad Woman Tue 26 — Sat 30 Jan 8pm Matinee performance Fri 29 Jan 2.30pm A true story, from Cardiff’s award winning, Shock n Awe Performance Company. The talking was over. The world held its breath. The Afghan people waited for the bombs to fall. So… Perhaps it wasn’t the best time for a hard drinking, single parent, feminist, Fleet St., reporter, working for a notorious pornographer, to don a burka and illegally enter Afghanistan in search of a story. Meet Yvonne Ridley. Everything went smoothly until Yvonne’s shoes started killing her. What happened next is the remarkable story of how personal and global cultures clashed because of an unruly donkey. Imprisoned by the Taliban for being, “A very bad woman, with a very bad mouth”, Yvonne was unaware that back home, her mum was forcing the hands of the world’s most powerful men by feeding the world’s media tea, biscuits and ‘snippets’ over the garden fence. Had she been, Yvonne might not have risked the Taliban’s moral outrage by hanging her knickers out to dry. Upon such flimsy threads the fates of individuals and nations sometimes hang.

Tony Law Frillemorphesis

Fri 15 Jan 8.15pm

Mon 1 Feb 7pm + 9pm

Mike Bubbins returns, this time with a dazzling stand up show about the tribulations of being a man out of time. “The 1970s, halcyon days when a man could be a man. And not just a man. He could be ALL man. A man’s man. But at the same time, very much a woman’s man. “For me, nothing can compete with the glamour of that age; its music, its television, its cars, its fashion, its moustaches. So I decided, many years ago to live in that golden decade, despite my wife, my children, my friends, my colleagues and everybody else I know, insisting on living in this one. “This might have made a lesser man feel like a Cuban-heeled outsider. A Cortina-driving fish out of water. A flared peg in a round hole. But not me. I am strong. I am well-groomed. I smell richly of spices and pine forests. I am, unashamedly, a Retrosexual Male.” Mike Bubbins is the taller half of BBC Radio Wales’ hit comedy series ‘The Unexplainers’ and both halves of BBC Radio Wales’ ‘Mike Bubbins-Daytripper’.

The brand new stand-up art show from the multi award-winning Tony Law. Experience his frillemorphesis as he explodes into the future absurdly. As seen on Have I Got News For You, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Celebrity Squares, The Alternative Comedy Experience and heard on Radio 4’s Tony Law’s Surreal Guide to Surreal Comedy. Following a sell-out tour and mammoth West End run in 2014, Mr Tony Law is striding back out on tour this Spring with a brand new show. Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict

UK/2015/94mins/subtitles/PG. Dir: David Evans.

USA/2015/96mins/15. Dir: Lisa Immordino Vreeland.

Human rights lawyer Philippe Sands interviews two men with strikingly opposite views on their relationship with their fathers. Niklas Frank, whose father was executed after being found guilty of war crimes at Nuremberg, and Horst von Wächter, whose father operated in occupied Poland. Both have utilised different emotional strategies (to varying success) to deal with the weight of the past. A fascinating encounter, it’s also a profound and timely meditation on remembrance and moral responsibility.

Heiress to the Guggenheim estate, she transformed a modest fortune as a patron to the arts with her impeccable taste. As she moved through the 20th century she collected not only art, but artists. A wild and iconoclastic life of one of the most powerful figures in the history of the art world.

France/2015/89mins/subtitles/U. Dir: Luc Jacquet.

Scientist and filmmaker Claude Lorius first travelled to the Antarctic as a young explorer looking for adventure, enthusiastically filming the dramatic landscape. Here he had his eureka moment, realising that the bubbles under the surface could contain information about the climate when they formed, so he began to dig: unearthing the science of climate change. This film charts his journey to the inconvenient truth of man’s destruction of the Earth.

During a routine mission, the soldiers are caught in heavy crossfire and in order to save his men, Claus makes a decision that has grave consequences for him — and his family back home.

In 1950s New York, two women from very different backgrounds find themselves in the throes of love. Therese is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol, an alluring woman trapped in a loveless marriage of convenience. An exquisitely drawn, deeply felt love story that teases out the characters’ inner lives with supreme intelligence.

Fri 15 — Thu 21 Jan

Awkward, precocious Stella is on the cusp of adolescence and idolises her older sister, competitive ice skater Katja; and is the first to notice when Katja starts starving herself in her quest for excellence. With outstanding and natural performances by the two girls, this is a nuanced and authentic portrayal of a difficult but common scenario; unusually exploring the far-reaching emotional impact of eating disorders for those who depend on, and look up to, their sufferers.

Facing betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, Joy becomes a true boss of family and enterprise in a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy’s inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces. Nie is asked to kill cruel and corrupt government officials; but when she fails in a task, she’s sent back to the land of her birth and faces a critical choice. Mesmeric and dreamlike, this is an extraordinary comeback from a master director.

“One of the most purely beautiful films I have ever seen… a martial arts saga like no other” Robbie Collin, The Telegraph

Fri 22 Jan — Thu 4 Feb UK/2016/120mins/ctba. Dir: Tom Hooper. With: Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander, Ben Whishaw.

This is the remarkable tale of the lives of artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer. With two incredible central performances, we begin to understand that Gerda’s portraits of Lili capture in art a truth that mirrors can’t reflect. + Join us for a post-screening presentation, discussion and debate on Mon 25 Jan with Tinted Lens, a new collaboration between Chapter, Cardiff University and the BFI. Audio descriptions and soft subtitles available, please see the calendar for details.

Room Fri 29 Jan — Thu 4 Feb USA/2015/118mins/15. Dir: Lenny Abrahamson. With: Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay, Joan Allen, William H Macy.

Emma Donoghue’s Booker-shortlisted novel, a tale of a mother and child held captive for years has many unsettling real-life resonances. A young woman is held captive with her five year old boy (who has never known life outside the room) and devises a precarious plan of escape. However, once outside they are forced to discover the wonders, horrors and choices of the world they left behind. Harrowing, suspenseful and wondrous, this film represents the culmination of a variety of talents.

In 1782, Choderlos de Laclos’ novel of sex, intrigue and betrayal in pre-revolutionary France scandalised the world. Two hundred years later, Christopher Hampton’s irresistible adaptation is revived on the play’s 30th anniversary. Former lovers, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont now compete in games of seduction and revenge. Merteuil incites Valmont to corrupt the innocent Cecile de Volanges before her wedding night but Valmont has targeted the peerlessly virtuous and beautiful Madame de Tourvel. While these merciless aristocrats toy with others’ hearts and reputations, their own may prove more fragile than they supposed. £17.50/£14/£13
