You’re just loving the new Chapter. If you haven’t visited us since the refurb, come along and find out what all the fuss is about. Here’s what a few people on the review website www.yelp.co.uk think: “A real hive of activity and a brilliant arts centre. *****” Rebecca B, Bristol “I have been going to Chapter for more than 10 years and I have yet to visit anywhere else in the UK and perhaps the world that comes close to offering as diverse and brilliant entertainment... cinemas, theatres and gallery spaces where you can ALWAYS find something thought-provoking.” Myles L, Cardiff “Everything is looking really gorgeous which is just as well because now summer is back I’d like to go there and drink my slightly pretentious cherry beer and talk art with the locals... one of the few places in Cardiff that’s got something different going on every day.“ Tiffany M, Cardiff

Peter Liversidge: Proposals for Cardiff Until Sun 11 July • Tan Sul 11 Gorffennaf Peter Liversidge always begins the exhibition process at his kitchen table, sitting alone writing proposals on an old manual typewriter. These handtyped pages present a wide range of possible and impossible ideas for performances, artworks and interventions in almost every conceivable medium. In a sense the first realisation of every work is in Liversidge’s head, then on the page, then in the mind of the reader, and finally (perhaps) as an object or happening. For Chapter, Liversidge has made 30 ‘Proposals for Cardiff’, each of which was posted to the Gallery for consideration. These framed letters are now displayed in our caffi bar and feature in a new bookwork of the same name. The physical manifestation of some of these proposals includes the addition of Lancashire Plum Bread to our caffi menu, specially compiled music CDs for the bar, brilliant white bunting strung throughout the space and limited edition embossed money in our tills. Further proposals have been made real in our Gallery space. The major installation Proposal No.10 (2009-10) features a forest of Black Walnut Trees. The installation offers a wry nod to a mythological vision of the American West and to our nostalgic pre-conceptions of the epic proportions of the landscape. These ideas are humorously undermined by Liversidge’s use of scale, prop and location. The exhibition also features a pair of large-scale Winter Drawings, a new, site-specific wall drawing and a pair of Polaroid photographs taken on South Beach in Miami. In addition, Liversidge has built a cinema in our Gallery which is screening free films selected by his friends and family. Screening details are available from the Gallery. Peter Liversidge is based in London and is represented by Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh. Recent projects and exhibitions include ‘The Thrill of it All’, Ingleby Gallery, 2010; ‘Proposals for Liverpool’, Tate Gallery, 2008 and Jupiter Proposals, Jupiter Artland, 2009. Liversidge is also one of 8 artists selected to be part of a major research project and exhibition by the Architectural Association, London and the city of Venice, to be unveiled at the Venice Biennale in 2010. Proposals for Cardiff is available to buy from The Shop for the special exhibition price of £5. This exhibition has received generous support from Richer Sounds, Canton

Magic Show Fri 30 July — Sun 12 Sept Gwe 30 Gorffennaf — Sul 12 Medi Featuring Jonathan Allen, Archive (Anne Walsh & Chris Kubik), Zoë Beloff, Ansuman Biswas & Jem Finer, Joan Brossa, Rick Buckley, Brian Catling, Center for Tactical Magic, Jackie & Denise Chapwoman, Tom Friedman, Brian Griffiths, Colin Guillemet, João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva, Susan Hiller, Alexandra Hopf, Christian Jankowski, Janice Kerbel, Annika Lundgren, Juan Muñoz, Bruce Nauman, Ian Saville, Ariel Schlesinger, Suzanne Treister and Sinta Werner. For some, the idea of magic suggests fantasy and illusion, while for others it signals a license to practice deception. This new exhibition considers how art and magic often share common ground, and how some contemporary artists adopt the perception-shifting tactics of the theatrical magician to influence the viewer and explore the power of suggestion. Magic Show features work by 24 international artists, with new commissions and performances and an archive of historical posters, curious props and off-beat ephemera from the world of theatrical magic. The exhibition demonstrates how art and magic both flourish in the grey area between fact and fiction, and considers the potential of trickery and illusion to undermine logical thought. The Los Angeles-based Center for Tactical Magic’s ‘Ultimate Jacket’ (designed for ‘private investigators, magicians and ninjas’) has 50 pockets for optimum concealment and retrieval and will be worn by our gallery assistants. Susan Hiller’s ‘Homage to Yves Klein’ incorporates found photographs of people levitating, ranging from the low-tech sham to highly sophisticated ruse; while ‘Failing to Levitate’ documents Bruce Nauman’s similar attempts to get off the ground. Sinta Werner’s site-specific installations mimic architectural features in the gallery to distort space and trick your eye. The archive section includes magician Paul Kieve’s collection of historical posters from theatrical magic’s ‘Golden Era’ (c1890-1930) that play up to the idea of the magician as princely commander of unearthly forces. And you can also marvel at a ‘card finding duck’, a staple of TV magicians of the 1970s, belonging to Tommy Cooper. See p37 for details of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and F For Fake, screening to complement this exhibition. An exhibition catalogue is available to buy from The Shop priced at £13.95. Magic Show is a Hayward Touring Exhibition from the Southbank Centre, curated by artist Jonathan Allen and writer Sally O’Reilly.

Heather & Ivan Morison Luna Park Southsea Common, Hampshire Sat 10 July — Sun 26 September Luna Park is a ‘life-sized’ dinosaur in the style of the early American roadside super-sculptures which will be appearing in three locations during the next 12 months. Following visits to Southsea Common and Colchester, it will arrive in Cardiff Bay in spring 2011 with an associated programme of activity for all the family. Luna Park is modelled on the Ultrasauros, a ‘discovery’ made in the 1970s by Professor Jim Jensen. The bones that he found were originally believed to belong to the largest dinosaur that ever lived and the name was widely used by the press and in scientific literature. Jensen published a paper describing his discovery in 1985, but it was later revealed that the collection of fossils came from two different dinosaur species — Ultrasauros was, in fact, a fiction. The Morisons’ Ultrasauros continues their recent investigation into the blurring of fact and fiction and will provide an intriguing and spectacular addition to the skylines of Southsea, Colchester and Cardiff. A programme of educational activity including discussion groups, architectural walks and talks, outdoor activities for children and dinosaur study days will be developed for each venue as the dinosaur tours. Heather & Ivan Morison’s work blends factual recall with fiction, merging information into a narrative that builds on the mythology of their lives and the lives of people they encounter. The Morisons featured in the British Art Show 6 and are represented by Danielle Arnaud contemporary art, London and Clint Roenisch, Toronto. They represented Wales at the Venice Biennale 2007 (the exhibition came to Chapter in February 2008). Luna Park is a Chapter initiative that has been commissioned in collaboration with Safle through the Stiwdio Safle programme; aspex, Portsmouth and Firstsite, Colchester. The project has received generous financial support from the Arts Council of Wales, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Arts Council of England and the European Union. Keep an eye on future magazines and our website for more information about Luna Park’s tour programme; or visit www.aspex.org.uk for details of its first appearance.

Anushiye Yarnell: Double Bill
Double CL1C card points
Tue 13 + Wed 14 July • 8pm • Maw 13 + Mer 14 Gorffennaf An evening of two new solo works choreographed by Anushiye Yarnell, one of Wales’ most idiosyncratic and visionary dancers and choreographers. Following previous collaborative projects, such as The Animal Love Project (2007) and The Heavenly Love Project (2009), this evening features two new works that move between the formal codes of dance, its history and movements, and the interpreted emotional landscape encountered between performer and choreographer. £10/£8/£6
Jennifer-Lynn Crawford Elvis, Kika, Candy “I do not know Jennifer-Lynn very well. I know she mumbles jokes to herself, she usually dresses in greys, blues and blacks, quite low key, she likes breathing and also smoking.” Jennifer-Lynn moves through an obstacle course, encountering different aspects of her inner and outer worlds including boredom, happiness, fascination, discomfort, aspiration and imagination. Jennifer-Lynn studied at Quinte Ballet School and School of Toronto Dance Theatre. Her choreographic work has been performed in Holland, Toronto, London and most notably as a finalist in Stuttgart’s 9th International Solo Tanz Theatre Festival. She has performed extensively with Hofesh Shechter’s deGENERATION tour and participated in the Siobhan Davies’ Bank Project (2007).
Anushiye Yarnell Is this me …or else? “I search amidst the wreckage of a dance, for something, in a self-defective moment resorting to a Jungian personality test, for some concrete piece of myself. Back and forth, it’s always the same — I keep changing, becoming lost, a familiar, forgetful, self-undoing motion.”

Her animated films have received many international Awards including 2 Oscar nominations, BAFTAs and Emmys. In June this year she was honoured with the prestigious ‘La Luna de Valencia’ award at the International Film Festival in Valencia. Previous recipients of the award include acclaimed film directors Guillermo del Toro, Stephen Frears, Richard Lester and veteran cult horror master Roger Corman. The city is simultaneously hosting a major retrospective of Joanna’s films, drawings and Artwork. “Normally people don’t get to see the individual drawings and all the work that goes into my films, so it’s great that they’ll be able to see the whole process at the exhibition. I would have loved to have had the exhibition shown here in Wales because this is where I’ve lived for the last 25 years and all my work has been produced here, perhaps one day I will be able to.” — Joanna Quinn Joanna donated a limited edition print of one of her drawings to our redevelopment fund (see below) - there are still a handful of prints left with all proceeds going towards Chapter’s continuing development (details on our website). She also recently carried out a series of workshops with staff from the Admiral Group, our newest corporate sponsor.

Fri 25 June — Thu 1 July Gwe 25 Mehefin — Iau 1 Gorff
UK/2009/140mins/12A. Dir: Ridley Scott. With Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Max Von Sydow, William Hurt, Mark Strong, Danny Huston.
USA /UK/2010/117mins/15. Dir: Matthew Vaughn. With Nicolas Cage, Mark Strong, Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz.
Filmed mainly in Pembrokeshire, this spectacular re-envisioning of the tale of how the man became legend draws on those elements which made Ridley Scott’s Gladiator such a success — the man fulfilling his destiny to rise up against his oppressors. In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power.
This DIY superhero tale is gloriously wrong, charming and entertaining throughout. A nerdy teen comic-book fan decides that there should be superheroes in real life and, with his homemade costume and weapons, springs into action against local hoodlums. As his antics gain an internet following under the guise of ‘Kick Ass’, his actions attract not only the attention of ‘real-life’ superheroes but also the local mob boss Frank D’Amico, who resolves to wipe out the costumed crusaders.

Utilising the ground breaking technique of combining 2D and CGI animation, The Sky Crawlers chronicles the lives of a group of young aerial fighter pilots known as ‘Kildren’ involved in a seemingly never-ending war against the nation’s enemies. When Yuichi Kannami is brought in to replace a pilot whose fate is kept secret from him, he struggles to discover his missing past. His memories are only of intense flight training and he begins to question not only his purpose in life but also his very existence.

Greenberg Fri 2 — Thu 8 July • Gwe 2 — Iau 8 Gorff USA/2010/107mins/15. Dir: Noah Baumbach. With Ben Stiller, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rhys Ifans.
Roger Greenberg is a greying malcontent about to turn 41. After treatment for a bout of mental instability, he makes a decision to ‘actively do nothing’ for a while, leaving behind his New York life to return to LA to house sit for his successful, happily married brother. Greenberg spends his days writing letters of complaint to faceless corporations and trying to understand what went wrong with past relationships. He finds time to mull over the recording contract he turned down, the life he could have had, and mankind’s collective, passive acceptance of a growing global, manufactured culture. This is a much stiller Stiller; working closely with Baumbach [The Squid And The Whale, Margot At The Wedding] he creates a believable character, teetering on the edge of likeable, who is, maybe, expressing our own thoughts and fears about a life where Frappuccinos are cold comfort. + Artist’s Short: This Quality (see p26) Egypt/5mins/U. When You’re Strange Fri 2 — Thu 8 July • Gwe 2 — Iau 8 Gorff USA/2009/90mins/ctba. Dir: Tom DiCillo. Narrated by Johnny Depp.
Providing new insight into the revolutionary impact and legacy of The Doors, this is a riveting account of the history of both the band and America from 1965 up to Jim Morrison’s untimely death in 1971. Narrated by Johnny Depp and using previously unseen footage, it follows Jim, John, Robby and Ray from the corridors of UCLA film school to the stages of sold-out arenas, and makes use of rare recordings and beautifully preserved footage of concerts, home movies and drunken studio sessions. Much of this may never have seen the light of day without Tom DiCillo’s keen eye for editing. This labour of love is a fascinating tribute to one of America’s most iconic and influential rock bands.
Wild Grass [Les Herbes Folles] Fri 2 — Thu 8 July • Gwe 2 — Iau 8 Gorff France/2009/104mins/subtitled/12A. Dir Alain Resnais. With André Dussollier, Sabine Azéma, Emmanuelle Devos.
The director of Last Year at Marienbad and Private Fears in Public Places, Alain Resnais’ 48th feature sees him in playful form as he continues to explore the male mid-life/late-life crisis to witty and revealing effect. While the basic tale of a man returning the stolen and discarded wallet of a woman and proceeding to stalk, and be stalked by, her, may sound contrived, Resnais’ skill means that it’s almost impossible not to be sucked in. Written by long-time collaborator Alain Robbe-Grillet, this visually sumptuous, arresting brain-teaser feels like his metaphysical day-dream. At 87 years old, Resnais is clearly more than ever in control of his directorial skills as this deceptively simple tale unpeels to explore the emotional twists and turns of ageing in a film that is part thriller and part psychosexual daydream.
Bad Film Club Cosmos: War of the Planets Sun 4 July • Sul 4 Gorff Italy/1977/89mins/ctba. Dir: Alfonso Brescia. With John Richardson, Yanti Somer, West Buchanan.
Nicko and Joe bring you one more stinker from their bad movie archive before a short summer break. A strange cosmic signal begins to disturb all communications on Earth and a UFO appears above the Antarctic. When a spaceship is sent out to find the origin of the signal the crew find a little bit more than they bargained for – an unknown planet where a giant robot has enslaved the population by stealing their psychic energies. No doubt this nasty fella has his circuit board sights on Earth too! This film can’t really be as bad as it sounds, can it...? Please note: Bad Film Club features live, irreverent commentary.

The Happiest Girl In The World Fri 2 — Thu 8 July • Gwe 2 — Iau 8 Gorff Romania/2010/100mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Radu Jude. With Andreea Bosneag, Andi Vasluian.

The girl in question is Delia, a young girl from a small Romanian town whose fortunes change when she wins a luxury car in a soft drinks competition. As part of the prize, she’s invited to Bucharest to perform in their advert and proclaim that she is indeed, the happiest girl in the world. However, this is not such an easy or quick process with increasing demands from the director, sponsors and fading light. Her acting is stilted, her smile becomes forced and the family squabbles over the future of the car noting the sacrifices they’ve had to make for her. This is a quirky and acerbic comedy which touches on notions of poverty and growing consumerism in a country whose film industry is enjoying a great deal of international success.

UK/2009/90 mins/12A. Dir: Lucy Bailey, Andrew Thompson. With Michael Campbell, Ben Freeth, Laura Campbell, Angela Campbell.
Inspired by the Africa-themed films in our Claire Denis season (see p29) we’re bringing back this intimate and moving account of one family’s extraordinary courage in the face of overwhelming injustice and brutality. Michael Campbell is one of the few hundred white farmers left in Zimbabwe since President Mugabe began his violent land seizure programme in 2000, re-allocating formerly white-owned farms to ZAN U-PF friends and officials. Battling to get their case against Mugabe heard in court, the Campbell family stand up to the thugs who are threatening to take their land, and possibly even their lives.

Four Lions Fri 9 — Thu 15 July • Gwe 9 — Iau 15 Gorff UK/2010/94mins/15. Dir: Christopher Morris. With Benedict Cumberbatch, Julia Davis, Preeya Kalidas.
Back at Chapter by popular demand, this first feature from the controversial master of contemporary British satire (Brass Eye, Nathan Barley, The Day Today) tells the story of a group of British jihadists who push their dreams of glory to breaking point. As their competing ideologies clash, what emerges is an emotionally engaging and entirely plausible farce. A storm of razor-sharp verbal jousting, Four Lions is a dark comic joy, showing that while terrorism is about ideology, it can also be about idiots.

Hires and Spaces
Name: Phil Scully
We have a number of spaces and facilities for hire at Chapter, many of which are booked regularly by a wonderful mix of day and evening classes. Visit our website or pick up a leaflet at the box office to see what’s on offer. If you’re looking to hire a room, you may want to check out our newly refurbished Media Point. This multi functional room is ideal for conferences and workshops but also transforms into an intimate bar or a small performance space. For more details give our hires manager a ring on 029 2031 1058 or email nicky.keeping@chapter.org
Job title: Cafe Counter Assistant What’s the best thing on the café menu? Definitely the beetroot and butternut squash salad. How long have you worked at Chapter? I think 7 years, in a multitude of areas! I’ve worked in the gallery shop, picked up a few shifts in theatre and cinema, and I used to fill envelopes to be sent out to customers! I like to think I’m multi-talented. What is your favourite thing about working at Chapter? It sounds like a cliché but it’s definitely the people I work with. It’s a one-of-a-kind atmosphere. Tell us about a memorable Chapter day... Mel (Cafe Supervisor) and I met at 6am one morning to post Chapter leaflets around Canton. After emptying our (gigantic) backpacks we ran off to audition for Big Brother for four hours. We were given a multitude of tasks, including jumping through hoops and making words with our bodies. We then made our way back to work for a seven hour shift! What do you get up to in your spare time? I like a good party and love spending time with Siham, Rosie and Lorna from the café and I’ve just finished studying my second year of a BA Hons in Fashion Promotion. What’s your style? It’s pretty unique, and doesn’t really follow one trend! I’m well known in Chapter for my low riding trousers. But, they’re getting higher... it’s a long process... one step at a time! Tell us a secret… Buy me a pint of Aspall’s cider after my shift and I might. Tell us a joke… One plate says to the other plate ‘lunch is on me’.
World Cup Fever! While most of Chapter remains a football-free zone, we’ve decided to make use of Media Point’s big screen and bottle bar so you won’t miss any of those important World Cup moments. We’re showing the quarter finals (except the late kick off on Fri 2 July), semi finals and the grand final, so you can savour every kick, save, foul, dive or incisive bit of half-time punditry!

Intense Intimacy The Cinema of Claire Denis Recently hailed by Sight & Sound Editor Nick James as the ‘filmmaker of the decade’, French director Claire Denis is one of the most distinctive and significant cinematic voices of our time. A number of longstanding collaborators have helped to shape her signature style, most notably cinematographer Agnès Godard, screenwriter Jean-Pol Fargeau, composer Stuart Staples (Tindersticks) and a pool of preferred actors. This touring season from Bristol Watershed marks the release of her latest film, White Material.

Trouble Every Day
Fri 9 — Thu 22 July • Gwe 9 — Iau 22 Gorff
Sun 4 July • Sul 4 Gorff
France/2010/100mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Claire Denis. With Isabelle Huppert, Isaach de Bankole, Christopher Lambert.
France/Germany/Japan/2001/97mins/subtitled/18. Dir: Claire Denis. With Vincent Gallo, Beatrice Dalle.
Maria owns a coffee plantation and is fighting to keep her family and her business together against the chaotic backdrop of a brutal civil war. Armed child soldiers fill the local streets and French helicopters patrol the sky aiming to save French families from near certain disaster. Maria’s family has become the ‘white material’ of the title, swept helplessly along by the weight of politics and history while trying desperately to survive. Denis revisits Africa, the setting for her celebrated first feature Chocolat, in this beautiful and haunting film which features a strong turn from Isaach de Bankolé (The Limits of Control) as a legendary black hero whose world has also been turned upside down. + Artist’s Short: The Last Days of British Honduras (see p26)
In 2001, Denis outraged Cannes audiences with this explicit elaboration on the violent poetics of desire, with Vincent Gallo and Béatrice Dalle as carriers of a blood-hungry virus released by erotic stimulation. Echoing the body-horror and scientific themes of contemporaries David Cronenberg and Dario Argento, this is the closest Denis has ever come to a horror film. In her defence, Denis remarked that her film is not “explicit or violent. It’s actually a love story. It’s about desire and how close the kiss is to the bite. I think every mother wants to eat her baby with love. We just took this on to a new frontier.”

The Cinema of Claire Denis Friday Night (Vendredi Soir)
Chocolat
Sun 11 July • Sul 11 Gorff
Sun 25 July • Sul 25 Gorff
France/2002/86mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Claire Denis. With Valerie Lemercier, Vincent Lindon.
France/Germany/Cameroon/1988/105mins/subtitled/PG. Dir: Claire Denis. With Isaach De Bankolé, Giulia Boschi.
A far cry from the darkness of Trouble Every Day, Denis’ poetic exploration of the pleasure and discontent of modern sexuality follows the nightlong odyssey shared by a woman and a stranger picked up in a Paris traffic jam. In typical Denis fashion, Friday Night deliberately cultivates a rich ambiguity on every level. The film is steeped in romanticism with remarkable cinematography by Agnès Godard. The sensual pleasure in surfaces and the attention to mood so important in Denis’ work come to the fore, alternately reflecting and refracting the film’s ethereal plot and almost anonymous protagonists.
An intricately observed tale of growing up in the twilight of French colonial authority in 1950s Cameroon, Denis’ feature debut (which Wim Wenders helped to secure funding for) instantly announced her as an auteur of the intimate. Although she herself has often demurred over the film’s autobiographical dimensions, many have read her own life story in the coming-of-age of a young woman and the complex relationships that bind her and her family to their house ‘boy’, Protée (Isaach De Bankolé). Shot by Agnès Godard and with a sparsely used soundtrack by South African musician, Abdullah Ibrahim, the film is stunning in its depiction of the West African landscape and the grating incongruity of its French intruders. Chocolat navigates the minefields of gender and sexuality under colonialism with a rare emotional honesty.
J’ai Pas Sommeil Sun 18 July • Sul 18 Gorff France/Switzerland/1994/110mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Claire Denis. With Yekaterina Golubeva, Richard Courcet.
Based on the true story of Thierry Paulin, who, with his male lover, murdered more than twenty elderly women in Paris in the 1980s, J’ai Pas Sommeil examines the life of three immigrants: Daïga, an aspiring Lithuanian actress with limited opportunities; Camille, a beautiful transvestite from Mauritius; and his brother, Theo, a musician and carpenter who longs to return to his homeland. Faced with the persistent pressure of assimilation, each character is confronted with division and marginalisation, finding brief moments of solace among their respective expatriate communities.
+ Vers Nancy
Vendredi Soir
Chocolat
2002/10mins/15. Dir: Claire Denis.
Nancy is both a North-eastern French city (and hometown of Eric Rohmer) and the last name of Jean-Luc Nancy, the celebrated philosopher who has exerted a major influence on Denis’ work. A fascinating combination of direct interview and fiction, Denis’ short film is her first attempt to grapple with Nancy’s ideas about intrusion and otherness.

The Intruder (L’intrus) Tue 27 July • Maw 27 Gorff France/2004/130mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Claire Denis. With Michel Subor, Gregoire Colin.
Drawing inspiration from R.L. Stevenson, Paul Gauguin’s paintings and a memoir by French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, this remains one of Denis’ most poetic and invigorating works. Gorgeously shot by long-time collaborator Agnès Godard, with a superb score by Tindersticks front man Stuart Staples, L’Intrus follows an enigmatic man in his late sixties (Michel Subor) travelling from the Jura region to the South Seas in an attempt to find a son he has never met. Although it can be a frustrating watch, this dying man’s long goodbye, which at times recalls Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man, is wilfully elusive, vital cinema that pushes the boundaries of what films can do.
“a haunting, enigmatic meditation” — Time Out
Llygaid Sgwâr Gan Philip Wyn Jones Mae’r actor Affricanaidd Isaach De Bankolé wedi ymddangos yn aml yn ffilmiau Claire Denis. Yn White Material (2009) mae’n portreadu arweinydd clwyfedig y gwrthryfelwyr yn un o drefedigaethau Affricanaidd Ffrainc lle mae teulu Ffrengig yn ceisio dal eu gafael ar eu planhigfa goffi. Isabelle Huppert yw’r wraig a mam styfnig sy’n gosod dyfodol y blanhigfa uwchlaw popeth arall. Yr awdures ddu arobryn Marie Ndiaye luniodd y sgript. Ganed Claire Denis ym Mharis ym 1948 ond treuliodd y rhan fwyaf o’i phlentyndod a’i harddegau yn Affrica lle roedd ei thad yn swyddog yn un o drefedigaethau Ffrainc. Gofalai ef fod Denis a’i chwaer yn derbyn eu haddysg mewn ysgolion oedd yn dysgu Affricanwyr ac Ewropiaid gyda’i gilydd. Ar ôl priodi dilynodd Denis gwrs dwys yn yr Institut Des Hautes Études Cinématographies, treuliodd gyfnod yn gweithio i sianel deledu addysgol a gwnaeth nifer o ffilmiau byrion a ffilmiau dogfen. Treuliodd bymtheng mlynedd fel cyfarwyddwr cynorthwyol i Jacques Rivette, Costa-Gravas, Wim Wenders a Jim Jarmusch ac ym 1988 cyfarwyddodd ei ffilm nodwedd gyntaf, Chocolat; golwg yn ôl ar ei phlentyndod yn Affrica gan Ffrances. Cafodd gymorth y dramodydd Jean-Pol Fargeau, ei chyd-sgriptiwr rheolaidd o hynny ymlaen, i’w gwneud yn gymharol wrthrychol ac yn rhannol ffuglennol. Dyma’r gyntaf mewn triawd o ffilmiau am bobl oedd, rywsut, ar wahân i’r gymdeithas lle roedden nhw’n byw. Y ddwy arall oedd S’en fout la mort/No fear, No Die (1990), am ddau Affricanwr sy’n ceisio ymsefydlu yn Ffrainc ac yn dod wyneb yn wyneb â hiliaeth enbyd, a J’ai pas sommeil/I Can’t Sleep (1994), am lofrudd du, hoyw, ifanc oedd yn lladd hen wragedd ym Mharis. Nénette et Boni (1996) oedd y ffilm nesaf, hanes brawd a chwaer sy’n cwrdd eto ar ôl bod ar wahân am gyfnod hir. Ar ôl Chocolat chawsai ffilmiau Denis mo’u dosbarthu’n eang ond death yn ôl i sylw’r byd gyda Beau Travail/Good Work (1999), golwg homoerotig ar fywyd yn y Lleng Dramor Ffrengig. Mae sawl dylanwad i’w gweld yn y ffilm hon; nofelig Herman Melville, Billy Budd, opera Benjamin Britten, gwaith Jean Genet a ffilm Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Querelle. Ychydig o sylw a gafodd Trouble Every Day (2001), oedd yn gyforiog o ryw a thrais, Vendredi Soir (2002) lle mae merch sydd ar fin symud i fyw gyda’i chariad yn cael noson o ryw gyda dieithryn a L’intrus/The Intruder (2004), am ddyn sydd â chalon wan a mab sy’n bell i ffwrdd. Yna yn 2008 cafwyd y ffilm boblogaidd 35 Rhums/35 Shots of Rum. Mae gyrrwr trên sydd newydd ymddeol yn colli’r gwmnïaeth yn y gweithle ac ar fin colli cwmni ei ferch sydd ar fin priodi. Does dim naratif gwasgarog a chymhleth yn y ffilm hyfryd hon. Yn White Material mae’r naratif yn neidio yn ôl ac ymlaen mewn amser ac mae nifer o’r golygfeydd pytiog yn ymddangos yn ddigyswllt. Ydy hyn yn ychwanegu at gyfoeth y ffilm neu a fyddai hi ar ei hennill petai Claire Denis wedi dewis arddull symlach? Penderfynwch chi! This blistering take on life on the streets of Jaffa, where Arabs, Jews and Christians live side by side, is absorbing in its complexity and becomes increasingly gripping as we grasp the myriad connections ensnaring the put-upon characters. Nasri is determined to help his older brother Omar with his schemes to raise money to pay off their blood feud debt, while Binj just wants to be able to live openly with his Jewish girlfriend. Bold and thoroughly cinematic, this joint venture between Israeli and Palestinian directors is a truly original look at life in Israel.
SWICA Cardiff Mas Carnival Mas Man Tue 13 July • 8.30pm • Maw 13 Gorff USA/Trinidad/Tobago/2010/56mins/no cert. Dir: Dalton Narine.
Mas Man documents the life and work of Peter Minshall, the Trinidad Carnival artist who introduced a new term ‘Mas’ to act against the formality and conservatism of masquerade in Carnival in the 1970s. This bold move to enlighten spectators about the complexities of life ultimately influenced the Olympic Games to utilise him as an artistic director in Barcelona, Atlanta and Salt Lake City. Featuring footage from the Mas in Trinidad, the Olympics and set pieces of political protest he’s undertaken worldwide, this is a personal portrait of a highly complex, motivated man and his impact on the world of Carnival. This free screening is part of a special evening of events at Chapter, celebrating the Cardiff Mas Carnival. See p20 for full details.

Whatever Works Fri 16 — Thu 29 July • Gwe 16 — Iau 29 Gorff USA/France/2009/92mins/12A. Dir: Woody Allen. With Larry David, Carolyn McCormick, Evan Rachel Wood.
Boris Yellnikoff is a retired nuclear physicist, Nobel Peace Prize nominee and New York misanthrope who spends his days hanging around in a coffee shop with his pals, teaching kids to play chess and grumbling to anyone who will listen, the audience included (‘let me tell you right now, I’m not a likeable guy’). He finds an unlikely companion in teenage runaway Melody St. Ann Celestine who naively hangs on his every word, but the situation becomes complicated when Melody’s parents arrive in town from Mississippi and take against this blossoming friendship. Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm and creator of Seinfeld) is of course a natural, if maybe meaner, version of Allen’s alter ego in this enjoyable and life affirming ride. + Artist’s Short: A Love Story (see p26) India/U/5mins. Tetro Fri 16 — Thu 22 July • Gwe 16 — Iau 22 Gorff USA/2009/127mins/15. Dir: Francis Ford Coppola. With Vincent Gallo, Maribel Verdu, Alden Ehrenreich.
When 17-year-old Bennie arrives in Buenos Aires to find the elder brother who ran out on him as a child (the now renamed and reinvented Tetro) he finds a man tortured by his past and influenced by his own maxim that ‘love is like a quick stab in the heart’. Trying to escape the oppressive shadow of their acclaimed symphony conductor father, the pain of losing his mother and attempting to realise his ambitions of being a great writer, Tetro lives a volatile and melancholy life with his girlfriend Miranda. Reluctantly, Bennie is allowed into Tetro’s life and the two brothers grapple with the haunting experiences of their shared past. Is it possible that the answers to their pain may be revealed within Tetro’s near-finished play? Told in stark and beautiful monochrome interspersed with intense colour sequences, Coppola’s original, new film explores the great topics of family rivalry, remorse and lost love.
The Girl On The Train Fri 16 — Thu 22 July • Gwe 16 — Iau 22 Gorff France/2010/102mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Andre Techine. With Emile Dequenne, Catherine Deneuve, Michel Blanc, Matheiu Demy.
Jeanne is a young jobless woman who lives a fairly comfortable life in the suburbs with a boyfriend she likes and a mother who rarely bothers her. But when a job interview with a lawyer who was a long time friend of her mother’s goes badly and she splits with her boyfriend, incredibly Jeanne carves a swastika on her stomach and claims she was the victim of a racial attack by North Africans who taunted her as a Jew. This far reaching lie soon grows into one of the biggest news and political stories of the day with the Media and French President alike swarming to be involved in the story. Dennis Hopper — The Poet Warrior “What are they gonna say about him? What are they gonna say? That he was a kind man? That he was a wise man? That he had plans, man? That he had wisdom? Bullshit, man!” — Hopper’s photojournalist in Apocalypse Now.
Apocalypse Now Sun 1 + Tue 3 Aug • Sul 1 + Maw 3 Awst USA/1979/2001/202mins/15. Dir: Francis Ford Copolla. With Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Martin Sheen, Dennis Hopper.
Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s novella ‘Heart of Darkness’ is now considered to be one of the greatest films about the Vietnam War, depicting the war as a descent into primal madness. Captain Willard, already on the edge, is assigned to find the AWOL Colonel Kurtz, rumoured to have set himself up in the Cambodian jungle as a local, lethal godhead. On his journey Willard encounters the uncounted casualties of war including draftees who prefer to surf and do drugs, a US Playboy Bunny show, a napalm and Wagner loving colonel and a jumpy photographer (Hopper on fine form), telling wild, reverent tales about Kurtz and building the myth.
Easy Rider Sun 8 + Tue 10 Aug • Sul 8 + Maw 10 Awst USA/1969/95mins/18. Dir: Dennis Hopper. With Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson.
Receiving an Oscar nomination for his part in writing this landmark countercultural American road film (together with Peter Fonda and Terry Southern), this early role for Hopper cemented his reputation as an iconoclast and free spirit and helped to spark off a new phase of filmmaking in Hollywood. After smuggling cocaine from Mexico to LA, Wyatt and Billy stash money from a deal in the Stars and Stripes fuel tank of their motorbike and head east towards New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Along the way, they encounter hippy communes struggling to live off the land, partake in some light drug taking and free love and get thrown in jail. They pick up local drunk George who tells them that its not what they look like, it’s what they represent that scares people.
Blue Velvet Sun 29 + Tue 31 Aug • Sul 29 + Maw 31 Awst USA/1986/120mins/18. Dir: David Lynch. With Isabella Rossellini, Kyle Maclachlan Dennis Hopper, Laura Dern.
Blue Velvet is considered by many to be Lynch’s masterpiece, not only for its brooding, neo-noir visual style and at times abstract narrative, but for the outstanding lead performances. Isabella Rossellini plays the abused torch song singer Dorothy Vallens, alongside Dennis Hopper as the dark and menacing Frank Booth and Kyle Maclachlan as the naïve young college student who stumbles across a severed ear and goes to great lengths to find what’s lurking beneath his hometown’s picture-postcard veneer.

The Time That Remains Fri 23 — Thu 29 July • Gwe 23 — Iau 29 Gorff UK/Italy/Belgium/France/2009/109mins/subtitled/15. Dir Elia Suleiman. With Elia Suleiman, Salah Bakri, Samar Qudha Tanus, Nati Ravitz, Amer Hlehel.
Double CL1C card points
Beginning in 1948 on the day Elia Suleiman’s hometown of Nazareth officially surrendered to the Israeli army, and continuing through to the most recent Intifada, The Time That Remains skilfully interweaves the personal and the political. As with his earlier works (Chronicle of a Disappearance and Divine Intervention), Suleiman uses surreal, blackly comic vignettes, a fractured dramatic narrative and his own acting skills, playing a silent, passive observer. Drawing on his parents’ diaries for inspiration, this masterpiece is a sweeping, comic and ultimately heartbreaking account of sixty years in the life of a Palestinian family.
American: The Bill Hicks Story Fri 23 — Thu 29 July • Gwe 23 — Iau 29 Gorff UK/2009/110mins/adv 15. Dir: Matt Harlock, Paul Thomas. With Bill Hicks, Kevin Booth, John Farneti.
Often referred to as the outlaw comic, Bill Hicks’ targets ranged from the first Iraq ‘war’, advertising executives, the news and organised religion. This highly spiritual and uncompromising comedian always tried to tell the truth as he saw it, right up until he lost his life at the age of 32 to pancreatic cancer. He became one of the most respected and groundbreaking comics of his generation, finding a true home in the UK when shunned by some American audiences. With contributions from his friends and family, this is a lovingly created documentary featuring photo-animation and live footage.

Separado! Fri 30 July — Thu 12 Aug • Gwe 30 Gorff — Iau 12 Awst UK/Argentina/Brazil/2009/84mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: Gruff Rhys, Dyl ‘Goch’ Jones.
Super Furry Animal Gruff Rhys goes on a quest to find his distant relatives among the descendants of a wave of Welsh immigrants to Patagonia in the late 1800s. Following a rigged horseback race that ended in a fatal accident in late 1882, Dafydd Jones fled to South America and became part of the still thriving Welsh-speaking community. Travelling at times by a teleportation device, much like a Power Ranger’s helmet, between Wales and Patagonia, Rhys journeys across South America performing experimental solo concerts, tracing the Welsh community’s movements, and searching for Jones’ great grandson, a 1970s Argentine pop star called René Griffiths, who would arrive on stage on a horse and sing in Welsh. Told with magical realism, this is a playful, sweet and thoroughly sincere road movie that looks at a fascinating part of welsh culture. + Artist’s Short: Ausgeträumt (See p26) Lithuania/6mins/U. After making a deal with Mr Nick for immortality and eternal youth, Parnassus enlists the help of his troupe of players. These 2 films have been chosen to complement our Gallery exhibition Magic Show. See p7.
F For Fake Tue 17 Aug • Maw 17 Awst USA/1974/85mins/no cert. Dir: Orson Welles.
Reality and artifice, truths and lies, the means and the ends are the poles traversed by Orson Welles in his examination of the nature of authenticity and artistic essence. Described by Welles as ‘a new kind of film’, it’s a prism of a movie in which fiction, documentary, and the poetic essay interlock, fragment and recombine to form an entertaining and profound work. Opening with a couple of magic tricks, the film segues into the story of master art-forger Elmyr de Hory and his relationship with biographer Clifford Irving, the author of the debated biography of the recluse Howard Hughes. F For Fake comes from the late period of Orson Welles’ career which, although perhaps less widely known than his Hollywood years, found one of cinema’s greatest masters at the top of his game.

Good Hair Prompted by his daughter asking “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?”, US Comedian Chris Rock trades his usual frenetic style to play the role of journalist for this enlightening, often funny and sometimes shocking documentary. He visits beauty salons, hairstyling battles, scientific laboratories and Indian temples, as well as a range of academics and celebrities, to explore the way hairstyles impact on the activities, sexual relationships and self-esteem of the black community. Their candid stories and observations help Rock in his struggle with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter’s question.

It’s the night of the 1979 Elections and Delroy is the chief suspect in the murder of his pregnant wife. He is interrogated by D.S. Karn, a witty, psychotic racist and his violent sidekick D.C. Wilby. Callous humiliation gives way to a barrage of sinister violence, which leads to a devastating conclusion. Based on a true story, this gripping drama looks at the ‘sus’ law, which allowed an officer to stop and search an individual on suspicions alone, which was withdrawn in 1980. Giuseppe Tornatore Baaria Fri 6 — Thu 12 Aug • Gwe 6 — Iau 12 Awst + Fri 20 — Thu 26 Aug • Gwe 20 — Iau 26 Awst Italy/2009/150mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Giuseppe Tornatore. With Francesco Scianna, Margareth Made, Angela Molina, Lina Sastri.
The director of Cinema Paradiso returns with an epic tribute to his Sicilian heritage as he tells the tale of Peppino Torrenuova, a boy who’s childhood coincides with the rise of the Fascists, the declaration of war and the liberation by the allies. The older Peppino joins the Communist Party and falls in love with the beautiful Manniana; events that are to shape and define his adult years. Beautifully photographed by Enrico Lucidi and set to a memorable Ennio Morricone score, this tale of a young man’s coming of age also shows the changing face of Sicily and the town of Bagheria, also known as Baaria. + Introduction by Helen Vallis on Mon 9 Aug at 8.30pm
Cinema Paradiso Sat 14 — Tue 17 Aug • Sad 14 — Maw 17 Awst Italy/1998/155mins/subtitled/PG. Dir: Guiseppe Tornatore. With Salvatore Cascio, Philippe Noiret, Marco Leonardi.
The release of Baaria provides us with the perfect excuse to screen a film that features in most cinema lovers’ top films. This tender tribute to the enduring passion of first love centres on Salvatore, a middle-aged and successful film director who receives news of an old friend’s passing. While returning to his hometown for the funeral of Alfredo, the projectionist who brought about his love of film, he remembers his life as a cheeky young boy drawn to the local picture house in a tiny village recovering from World War II. This is a poignant and humorous tale of a young boy’s, and later a young man’s, life and an answer as to why Salvatore walked away from his past thirty years earlier.

Women Without Men Fri 6 — Thu 12 Aug Gwe 6 — Iau 12 Awst Iran/2009/95mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Shirin Neshat, Shoja Azari. With Shabnam Tolouei, Pegah Ferydoni, Arita Shahrzad.
Photographer and installationartist Shirin Neshat spent six years making this feature debut about four Iranian women in 1953 who witness the country’s transition from a democratically elected patriarchy to a more dictatorial one. Munis is a middle-class, middleaged single woman fascinated by the protests in the streets and the reports of a Western-led coup, while Faezeh, her best friend, urges her to obey her conservative brother and be less of an iconoclast. Farrokhlagha is the well-off wife of a highranking official in the Shah’s military and Zarin is a prostitute who is slowly losing her mind. Exploring the very different experiences of these women, the film moves between reality and a kind of dream-state, as all four find their way into a walled orchard where they share fellowship and temporary refuge from the demands of men.

Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque) Fri 13 — Thu 19 Aug • Gwe 13 — Iau 19 Awst France/USA/2010/130mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Joann Sfar. With Eric Elmosnino, Lucy Gordon, Laetitia Casta.
Based on his own graphic novel, Joann Sfar wrote and directed this unique and enjoyable film of the life of one of France’s most influential artists. Growing up in wartime Paris the young Lucien Ginsburg escaped from both Nazi and self-persecution by embarking on a career in the arts, resulting in him becoming a celebrated songwriter. But it was only through his relationships and affairs with the likes of France Gall, Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin that he became a veritable force in music and French popular culture. Despite this success, his life and career remained turbulent as he provoked the establishment while blazing a musical trail that has continued to inspire generations ever since. Eric Elmosnino is terrific as the peculiar and complex lead in this visually beautiful and often fantastical film.
Bluebeard Fri 13 — Thu 19 Aug • Gwe 13 — Iau 19 Awst France/2009/80mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: Catherine Breillat. With Dominique Thomas, Lola Creton, Daphne Baiwir, Marilou Lopes-Benites.
Based on Charles Perrault’s grisly fairytale, Catherine Breillat (The Last Mistress) brings her uniquely dark and elegant style of filmmaking to this classic tale of a wealthy aristocrat who, as stories say, despatched his various wives without a care. Catherine loves to frighten her older sister by reading this fairy tale to her until she starts to cry. She makes it all the more real by including herself in the tale as Bluebeard’s last wife, Princess MarieCatherine, the virgin princess, who the ogre can’t decide whether to kill or not. Given a key to a secret chamber and told not to open the door while he is away, curiosity gets the better of her and she enters a frightening world where she is confronted by her worst fears.

Despite Stravinsky having his children and consumptive wife in tow, a passionate and intense love affair begins between them, fuelled by their desires to push the boundaries of fashion and music. The Secret in Their Eyes Fri 27 Aug — Thu 9 Sept • Gwe 27 Awst — Iau 9 Medi Argentina/Spain/2009/130mins/subtitled/18. Dir: Juan José Campanella. With Ricardo Darín, Soledad Villamil, Pablo Rago, Javier Godino.
This year’s Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winner is a skilful blend of love story, crime thriller and legal drama with a distinctly Latin flavour in its penchant for sweeping melodrama and emotive, showstopper scenes. The generous running time allows the film to fully explore the central love affair of Irene, female District Attorney, and Sandoval, a court criminal investigator. Neatly entwined around the story of their love affair is Sandoval’s obsession with the unsolved case of a murderer who has escaped justice through a mix of police corruption and mysterious disappearance. A heady mélange of violence, baroque styling, sentimentality and melodrama, this is a thriller deeply in debt to the lush rhythms of Almodovar and the tougher genre elements of contemporary South American cinema such as Nine Queens.

Christopher ‘The Dark Knight’ Nolan’s long awaited latest feature is a dark and complex science fiction thriller that travels the globe and delves into the intimate and infinite world of our dreams. Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, who steals the most valuable secrets from deep within people’s subconscious during the dream state. It is this skill that has made him an outlaw and a coveted player in the treacherous world of corporate espionage. When he’s offered the chance of redemption, to do ‘just one last job’ to give him back his lost life, he must carry out the reverse, not to steal an idea but to implant one. However, no amount of planning can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. + Guest panel discussion from Sci Screen on Fri 27 Aug.

Shop open: Tue — Sat 10am-8pm, Sun 2-8pm. Closed Monday.
We have gone recycle-tastic in The Shop this month, with frisbees, stationery, picnic bags and even recycled jewellery by local artist Elen Wynne-Jones. Elen takes found objects and alters them to create highly individual pieces. Why not pop in, have a nosey and maybe ease your carbon footprint. We’ve also taken on a new eco-friendly cycling mag, Boneshaker. It’s published in Bristol by a dedicated team of recycling cyclists and contains some great info on pimping your ride DIY style. There are tips on reusing discarded parts and getting advice/meeting people who are passionate about cycling. You can buy Peter Liversidge’s beautiful new bookwork ‘Proposals for Cardiff’ for just £5 (exhibition details on p5). If you’re lucky you might even get one of his limited edition embossed notes ‘Montana Forever’ in your change. Don’t forget the children’s packs designed to engage young visitors to the gallery and please let me know if there’s something you’d like us to stock in The Shop. Jemma, Shop Supervisor

Café open: Mon — Sat 8.30am-9.30pm Sun 9.30am-9.30pm Breakfast: 9-11.30am (Sun 10am-12pm) Lunch: 11.30-3pm Main Menu: 12-9pm
As we steam ahead into summer, I’ve decided to take roast dinners off the menu for a little while (no need to worry, they will return in the autumn!). Alongside the usual favourites, I’m introducing some lovely salads utilising what is fresh at the moment. We have a great marinated feta, beetroot, spinach and mint salad; the classic Nicoise; and our very own Chapter ploughman’s (with a choice of Welsh cheddar, award winning Caws Cenarth organic Welsh blue cheese, home cooked ham or griddled aubergine, artichoke hearts and olives), served with sourdough bread, homemade onion chutney, salad and a handful of Welsh Real crisps. We’ll also be tantalising your tastebuds with sea bass en papillote (sea bass baked in parchment with potato, tomato and onion). Lex, Café Manager

Thu 15 — Sat 17 July • Iau 15 — Sad 17 Gorffennaf Join us for the Chapter Cider and Perry Festival and sample some delicious craft perry and cider from local producers — the perfect drink for a warm summer’s day. Over the past 10 years, the cider and perry industry has seen a great resurgence in Wales (thanks, in no small part, to the work of the Welsh Perry and Cider Society) and we’re more than happy to be jumping on the apple cart at Chapter. We’re also welcoming some great local food stalls during the festival, courtesy of our friends at Roath Food Market. Abi, Front of House Manager
