Welcome

Chapter is an ambitious, multi-artform venue that presents, produces and promotes international art, live performance and film alongside a dynamic social space. We are an organisation that celebrates difference, that embraces the collision of contemporary and community, of art with audience, of the challenging and new with the open and the accessible. We have never been afraid to change and develop, take risks and sometimes fail. It’s this spirit of curiosity that has fostered our transformation from a deserted school to a unique hub for art, ideas and innovation. To find out more about our history, what’s happening now and some great things we have planned for the future take a look at our new website www.chapter.org.

James Harder Volunteer I’d heard great things about Chapter, so when I moved to Cardiff a few years ago I decided to volunteer. I was unemployed at the time, but volunteering meant that I was able to see fantastic productions and films. I’ve got a full time job now, but still do a few duties per month. As a volunteer I’ve seen some real gems that I perhaps wouldn’t have considered seeing. I’m looking forward to seeing Mark Thomas’s 100 Acts of Minor Dissent and Henning When’s Authentic German Christmas Do (both p14). I lived in Germany for a number of years, so I really enjoy his comedic take on being German and living in the UK.

Sean Edwards Drawn in Cursive Preview: Fri 26 July, 6 - 8pm Exhibition: Sat 27 July — Sun 22 September

“I am interested in the outpouring of things that sit at the periphery of a practice; collections of objects, images and drawings, photographs and clippings. The incidental moments and small objects in life that we sometimes neglect.” Sean Edwards’ work investigates the sculptural potential of the everyday, often using remnants of previous activities as a starting point to form an archive of some 600 objects, clippings, drawings and other found or made materials. In many of the works there is a sense of objects being in-progress, indeterminate and open to change; the audience is invited to play a part in their creation. The completion is only ever realised in the exhibition environment to undermine the perception of the gallery as a space for fully achieved artworks. Edwards describes this aspect of his practice as ‘artistic intuition’. Objects are gathered and collected intuitively but are all strongly connected. This exhibition will see him working more closely with the collection, to build up the archive and to create an expanding dialogue around it. Beginning at Chapter, the exhibition will be shown in a further two venues, during which time it will evolve, shift and change in dialogue with the architecture, history and location of each space: Chapter as a former school; Netwerk, Aalst, Belgium as a former textile factory and Mostyn as a purpose-built picture gallery. Sean Edwards was born in Cardiff and lives in Abergavenny. He gained his BA Fine Art at University of Wales Institute (2003) and his MA Fine Art at Slade, London (2005). Recent solo shows include Kunstverein Freiburg, Freiburg, Tanya Leighton Gallery, Berlin (2012); Spike Island, Bristol (2011). Recent international group shows include Zabludowicz Collection (2011); Galeria Marz, Lisbon and Wallspace Gallery, New York (both 2010); Lisson Gallery, London (2009); The Approach, London; Frank Elbaz and Art: Concept, both Paris; Centre, Berlin (all 2008); and Tanya Bonakdar, New York (2007). He is represented by Limoncello, London limoncellogallery.co.uk and Tanya Leighton, Berlin tanyaleighton.com Oriel Mostyn, 17 October 2014 — 4 January 2015. Netwerk, 8 December 2013 — 9 March 2014.

Emma Bennett

I’ve been visiting Chapter ever since I was a young girl growing up in Brecon and so it was great to be invited to show here as part of Diffusion festival and to see how the centre has developed. It was probably the first contemporary art gallery that I ever went to and it certainly influenced me in my decision to go to art school. I vividly remember seeing Withnail and I at Chapter when it was first released in the cinema and I remember my first band playing here in the late 80s. I’m really looking forward to returning to Chapter to perform with my current band, Dear Thief, on Saturday 6th July (p8).

Emma Bennett Thief of Time Wed 1 May — Sun 7 July Emma Bennett’s hauntingly beautiful paintings contemplate space, time and the fragility of the human condition. Appropriating imagery from historical Dutch and Italian painting, Bennett immaculately renders bowls of ripened fruit, bouquets of blooming flowers, dead game and swathes of rich fabric that reflect this long tradition of still life painting — of apparent naturalism underpinned by compositional artifice, and of time suspended. Emerging out of the midnight– black void of her canvas, the subjects allude to the transitory nature of existence; to life, death and the after-life. In her latest work Bennett considers the ephemerality of imagery, memory and the desire to make these moments more permanent, and references the investigations of historic and contemporary still-life photographers — from Roger Fenton to Wolfgang Tillmans. Bennett illuminates the tradition’s darker side — through the use of allegory and in reflecting the poignancy of loss, and the poignancy of the futile effort to retrieve and retain, to freeze time and hold on to what passes. Chapter’s Head of Visual and Live Art, Hannah Firth, has been invited to commission new work from artists based in Wales as part of the major overhaul of Cardiff Airport. Travellers arriving at Cardiff Airport can expect a brighter welcome and better first impression of Wales thanks to this Welsh Government-funded scheme to improve visitor experience at the terminal. The work celebrates Wales’ vibrant culture, heritage, landscape, products and businesses. The project is one component of the wider activity recommended by the Cardiff Airport Taskforce, established by the First Minister, to look at ways of making the airport more competitive and realise its potential. The work was agreed prior to the Welsh Government’s purchase of the Airport last month. The Chapter commissions will run for three years and feature contemporary work by artists from Wales - including painting, illustration, text and installation. Dear Thief + Support Sat 6 July 8pm Dear Thief have come a long way from their debut album Under Archway from 2011. Performing a new collection of songs, the band explores the heavier side of their sound. From the fatigued insomnia of Hotel through to the haunting resignation of Ground Pull, they maintain momentum with heavy, melodic riffs and rhythmical directness, drawing comparisons to bands such as Shellac and The Jesus Lizard. Weaving heavy, churning grooves with intimate moments, they conjure a hypnotic swirl of syncopated patterns with B’layachi’s storytelling setting the pace. Dear Thief are Yusuf B’layachi, Emma Bennett and Tim Greany.

Coreo Cymru: Dance Roads Open Process Mon 16 — Sat 28 September During September, Chapter will host Dance Roads Open Process (DROP), a major European dance residency and conference bringing together dance artists, leaders and specialists from across the EU to discuss artistic working practices and examine the current provision available within dance networks. The event is just one aspect of a bigger project led by Chapter and Coreo Cymru; DROP is the first Welsh led dance project to be funded by the EU Culture Programme and aims to develop and expand the provision currently available to the small-scale contemporary dance sector in Europe. Dance artists from Wales, France, Italy, The Netherlands and Canada will descend on Chapter to a two-week artists residency guided by France internationally acclaimed choreographer Faizal

Zeghoudi. The artists selected through the Dance Roads network will work together to develop short work in progress pieces presented during the conference to the delegates and other invited guests. These works will later be developed and presented in Chapter in June 2014 as part of the Dance Roads tour. This project has been funded with support from the European Commission. This communication reflects the views only of the author, and the Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein.

She has performed with Rosas, DV8 Physical Theatre, Rambert Dance Company, Mark Bruce Company, Young Vic Theatre, Igloo and currently she is working with Quarantine Theatre. After Hours at the Polestar Club

Barry Cryer and Ronnie Golden

Thu 15 Aug 8pm

Wed 4 Sept 7.30pm

Holed up in a run-down cabaret venue, the manageress, the musician and a stubborn ‘regular’ are stuck with nowhere else to go, which as usual is when all the best stories begin… The strange tale of a young girl in space. A conversation using the Auroral Current. A way to navigate the magnetosphere. It’s After Hours… but you’re invited. Appearing at the Polestar Club are cosmic storyteller Christine Watkins, universe-mapping artist Maria Hayes and vocal violinist extraordinaire Sianed Jones. After Hours at the Polestar Club is a collaboration between Honeysuckle Direction and The Centre for Performance Research.

Go Faster Stripe are proud to present another DVD recording. The dynamic duo of comedy legend Barry Cryer (I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue), and former Fabulous Poodle Ronnie Golden, promise a riotous, rip-roaring night of comedy and song. Forget a combined age of 142, they deliver this with neither a safety net nor Zimmer frame in sight! A glorious mix of Barry’s legendary jokes and stories alongside Ronnie’s skillful strumming and wicked wit make the night a unique and hilarious event. Expect songs that deal with the burning issues of the day: voluntary euthanasia, mobile phone frustrations, Stannah Stairlifts and John Prescott! This will be a “best of” show followed by an audience Q+A.

A word from Pablo Janczur, Director of Brecon Jazz Andy Eagle Director I am delighted that Chapter will be hosting one of the main festival stages at this year’s prestigious Brecon Jazz Festival. The Chapter stage at Brecon Cathedral will present the latest innovative, cutting edge inspirational jazz from some of the UK and Europe’s most exciting new artists. Chapter has started to present a much broader music programme recently and jazz plays a key part of this development. Enjoy Brecon Jazz and look out for more great jazz in the autumn and winter.

Having reclaimed its spirit under a new organiser last year, Brecon Jazz returns to the cultural calendar this August, rejuvenated by the reunification of the festival with its traditional town centre venues, including the breathtaking Brecon Cathedral, which this year hosts the Chapter Stage. This partnership sees fiery saxophonist Gilad Atzmon and his Orient House Ensemble and the Mercury nominated pianist Zoe Rahman perform on Friday 9th, whilst on Saturday 10th both Ian Shaw and the Julian Siegel Quartet perform new material amongst the pews. Artist in Residence Huw Warren delivers the first of two 2013 international commissions under the banner of World Wide Wales, accompanied by Neapolitan vocalist, Maria Pia de Vito. Warren returns on Sunday 11th, this time as one third of Quercus, with UK Jazz pioneer John Surman and rising star Laura Jurd completing the day’s bill.

Elsewhere Gospel legend Mavis Staple appears at The Market Hall (Saturday), as does multi-instrumentalist Courtney Pine (Friday). With a combined cache of 18 Grammy’s, The Impossible Gentlemen (Sunday, Theatr Brycheiniog) are quite a proposition for your money, much like the great Django Bates (Saturday, Theatr Brycheiniog). Predictably, Jools Holland sold out immediately, but the experimentally inclined should join Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer and his compatriot Biosphere (Friday, Theatr Brycheiniog) as they blur the boundaries of jazz and ambient electro in a UK exclusive performance. www.breconjazz.com

Come As You Are

Fri 28 June — Thu 11 July

Fri 28 June — Thu 4 July

France/2012/110 mins/subtitles/12A. Dir: Claude Miller. With: Audrey Tautou, Gilles Lellouche, Anais Demoustier.

Belgium/2012/108mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Geoffrey Enthoven. With: Robrecht Vanden Thoren, Gilles De Schryver, Tom Audenaert.

Suffocating in a marriage of convenience Thérèse is a frustrated young housewife in 1920s provincial France. Watching her best friend begin a passionate affair with a dashing young man Thérèse yearns to escape to a bohemian life in jazz-age Paris. She discovers her husband’s heart medicine contains arsenic, and forms a plan of escape. This gloriously conceived costume melodrama is an adaptation of François Mauriac’s classic novel and Tautou brings an intense depiction which conveys all the inflections of hurt and pain, love and sorrow.

Three young friends with disabilities decide to go on a road trip to lose their virginity when they hear of a Spanish brothel catering for “people like us”. Josef is almost completely blind, petulant prankster Philip is paraplegic and wheelchair bound Lars has a degenerative terminal illness that causes paralysis and occasional fits. Inspired by the experiences of advocate and motivational speaker, Asta Philpot, this joyful film follows what happens when Lars’ prognosis takes a turn for the worse and they decide to sneak away to help him live the remainder of his life to the full.

The Iceman Fri 28 June — Thu 11 July USA/2012/105mins/15. Dir: Ariel Vromen. With: Michael Shannon, Winona Ryder, James Franco, Ray Liotta, Chris Evans, David Schwimmer.

Based on the true story of Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer and associate of East Coast crime families in the late 1950s. Dubbed “the Iceman” for his practice of freezing bodies to confuse the time of death, this brutal thriller reflects the coldblooded efficiency of its murderous subject in every detail. Inhabiting a terrain of pool halls, porn theatres and a blood-spattered slaughterhouse, Richie maintained a normal life with his wife and children until his grisly day-to-day activities took their toll, an effect comparable to that of slow-drip poison.

The Act of Killing Fri 28 June — Thu 4 July Denmark/2013/115mins/15. Dir: Joshua Oppenheimer.

In the 1960s, Anwar Congo was a leader in Indonesia’s pro-regime paramilitary, the Pancasila Youth who, along with his band of dedicated followers, was amongst those who participated in the murder and torture of more than a million alleged Communists, ethnic Chinese and intellectuals. Proud of their deeds and completely unpunished, Anwar and his pals delightedly use actors, construct elaborate sets and even use pyrotechnics to re-enact these murders for this documentary — in any genre they desire. Initially enthusiastic, as the movie violence is played out and reconstructed, Anwar finally begins to feel unease and remorse.

Fri 5 — Thu 11 July

USA/2013/108mins/15. Dir: Richard Linklater. With: Julie Delphy, Ethan Hawke.

Australia/2011/119mins/15. Dir: Fred Schepisi. With: Charlotte Rampling, Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis.

Linklater’s third instalment [Before Sunrise, Before Sunset] further explores the relationship between American Jesse and French Céline as they enter their 40s with a witty examination of what happens when youthful ideals collide with the responsibilities of middle-age. With all the razor sharp dialogue of the earlier films, it also packs an emotional punch as the darker edge of life piles up. It’s a treat to see these characters’ lives unfold over many years made possible with the pitch perfect performances from the cast and Linklater’s attention to detail.

In this quiet and dreamily intense tale we meet the wealthy matriarch Elizabeth Hunter, a powerful presence who is in command of all aspects of her life — society, her staff and her children. In her final defiant act, she wishes to dictate her death. With her children convened for the occasion, their masks of refinement are slowly stripped away revealing undercurrents of cruelty and savage emotions. A witty script coupled with intelligent and powerful performances brings this handsome looking adaptation from Australian Nobel Laureate Patrick White.

Piercing Brightness Mon 15 — Thu 18 July UK/2013/75mins/adv 15. Dir: Shezad Dawood. With: Houda Ecouafni, Chen Ko.

Using the starting point that Lancashire has the highest UFO sighting rate in the UK, internationally acclaimed artist Shezad Dawood weaves together elements of documentary and the fictional story of Jiang and Shin who land in a spacecraft outside of Preston. Sent to retrieve agents from an ancient mission who were sent to this planet to study us, many have forgotten their original purpose and are slowly becoming influenced by and in turn influencing their adopted home. Science fiction has often been used as a backdrop to contest fixed cultural ideas and here Dawood uses it to discuss race, migration and identity.

+ Come Along Do, Mon 15 July

Chaired by Gill Nicol, this post screening event takes Piercing Brightness as the starting point for an in-depth and lively discussion exploring art and film. £2.50 (Places are limited so please book early. Tickets for the film must be purchased separately.

Summer in February Fri 12 — Thu 25 July UK/2013/101mins/15. Dir: Christopher Menaul. With: Dominic Cooper, Dan Stevens, Emily Browning.

From left to right: Summer in February, Renoir

Based on true events, this is a story of love and loss among the Lamorna Group, the bohemian colony of artists which flourished on the southern coast of Cornwall before the First World War. The incendiary anti-Modernist artist AJ Munnings, is at the centre of a complex love triangle involving aspiring artist Florence Carter-Wood and Gilbert Evans, the land agent in charge of the Lamorna Valley estate.

Claire Vaughan Programme Officer, Film and Cinema Identity is a fluid, abstract concept I find myself grappling with daily, so I love our programme this month. Family identity is a concern of Sarah Polley’s film Stories We Tell and I’ll be discussing hiding our true selves in a Lavender Screen discussion following Beyond The Candelabra. As I’m Cornish it will be great to see my homeland portrayed in Summer in February. By August I may have a better idea of who I am.

Renoir Fri 26 July — Thu 1 Aug France/2012/111mins/subtitles/ctba. Dir: Gilles Bourdos.

At the estate of Impressionist master Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1915, his son Jean returns home to convalesce during the war. During his stay he becomes attracted to his father’s beguiling muse Andrée who seduces Jean into the new art of filmmaking, giving him the opportunity to step out from under his father’s long artistic shadow. A sensuous tale of love between rivals who happen to be father and son, where the only rule of the game is that all is fair in love and war.

“Cinema is the most powerful weapon” Mussolini took a personal interest in the Italian film industry, and opened the Cinecittà on the anniversary of the founding of Rome, unwittingly nurturing a generation of future auteurs. After his demise these directors took this tool and created some of the most memorable films of all time. Also featured is Cleopatra and Shun Li and The Poet, films made in and inspired by Italy.

Journey to Italy

Shun Li and The Poet

Italy/1957/86mins/PG. Dir: Roberto Rossellini. With: Ingrid Bergman, George Sanders.

Italy/2012/100mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Andrea Segre. With: Tao Zhao, Rade Serbedzija.

Alexander and Katherine Joyce, are a well-to-do English couple who have come to Naples to sell some property and do a little sightseeing, but something in their enforced leisure, the disturbing beauty of the landscape accelerates a crisis in their troubled marriage. They are more alive than ever, intensely aware and intrigued by each other and themselves. Will the couple find each other again in this intoxicating city?

Shun Li is a single mother from China working in a fishing village in Italy in the hope of a better future. She meets weary old fisherman Bepi, an exile from Eastern Europe with a love of poetry and she shares tales of Qu Yuan, China’s most celebrated poet. Unlikely friends, they encounter disapproving locals who make it clear that they don’t accept Shun Li and Bepi’s budding relationship. A delicate, beautifully shot film that proves that lyricism is something available for everyone no matter what language we speak.

Sun 7 + Tue 9 July

Theorem

Sun 14 + Tue 16 July Italy/1968/98mins/15. Dir: Pier Paolo Pasolini. With: Terence Stamp, Silvana Mangano, Massino Girotti.

Terence Stamp is the beautiful visitor to an uppermiddle-class household in Milan who sexually entrances every single member: the son, the daughter, the maid, the mother and even the wealthy, ailing father, and then departs, leaving behind him a creative and destructive chaos. This playful absurdist tale from Pasolini fuses the sexual and political revolutions of the time and imagines a bourgeois world blown open by ideas.

Cleopatra

Sat 13 — Sun 14 UK/1963/243mins/PG. Dir: Joseph L Mankiewicz. With: Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Rex Harrison.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of what is considered the most opulent, expensive epic in cinema history, telling the life and loves of the Egyptian queen. Desperate to hold onto her throne in the face of Roman expansion, Cleopatra employs all her charms in an attempt to secure an alliance with Julius Caesar. When Caesar is murdered, her affections turn to popular general Mark Anthony but it is not long before romance turns to tragedy. This is a rare chance to see this beautifully restored full length print and glimpse the beginnings of the Burton-Taylor love story.

Fri 19 — Thu 25 July

The Gospel According To Matthew Sun 28 + Tue 30 July

Italy/1964/137mins/PG. Dir: Pier Paolo Pasolini. With: Enquie Irazoqui, Susanna Pasolini, Margherita Caruso.

In this fierce burst of neorealism, Pasolini imagines Christ as a gentle radical working against the unjust Roman power structure. Taking dialogue directly from the gospel and casting non-professionals (including his own mother as Mary) this is a deeply moving and raw tale of The Passion, making the story relevant to modern audiences by drawing parallels with contemporary politics and a provocative soundtrack.

From the streets of his native New Jersey, to the dizzy heights of the victory and inauguration speeches of America’s first black President, no other artist has embodied the highs and lows of the American Dream more. This unique film combines never-before-seen archive footage of Bruce’s performances over 40 years, together with his fans’ own personal insights. This screening includes an exclusive 15mins of his current concert tour. £10

The Decline of Western Civilization Pt II: The Metal Years Sun Jul 28 Doors 7.00pm, film 8.00pm USA/1988/93mins. Dir: Penelope Spheeris.

A fascinating insight in to the hedonistic and largerthan-life world of 80s metal, The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years is a rightful classic. Featuring interviews and live performances from Megadeth, Alice Cooper, Gene Simmons and Ozzy, this film is the ultimate document of a time and place where hairspray and hell-raising were the only things that mattered. Perhaps best summed up by an interview with Chris Holmes from W.A.S.P., fullydressed, in a floating-chair in his swimming pool, downing full bottles of vodka as his Mum looks on, this film has to be seen to be believed. Tickets are £5 and can be purchased through www.chapter.org and at Bogiez

USA/2013/107mins/15. Dir: Evan Goldberg. With: James Franco, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen.

A party at James Franco’s house is cut short by the apocalypse. As the world unravels and their supplies dwindle the friends are forced to leave the house and face their fate. With a cast list reading like a who’s who of American ‘indie’ comedy, this is an ironic look at celebrity and a light-hearted look at how we react to the end of days.

Stories We Tell Fri 12 — Thu 18 July Canada/2012/108mins/12A. Dir: Sarah Polley.

Sarah Polley calls this a documentary, but it is far more mischievous than that. As both filmmaker and detective she delves into the secrets kept by her own family of storytellers. Playfully interviewing a candid cast of characters she asks the same questions with often contradictory results, each relating their version of the family mythology. Present-day recollections shift into nostalgia-tinged glimpses of their mother, who departed too soon and left a trail of unanswered questions. The threads of tales told unspool, revealing the essence of a complicated, warmly messy and fiercely loving family.

“Polley has her brilliant way with the elusiveness of truth. The result, with its flashing perspectives and stealthy wit, is unique and unforgettable.” - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

USA/2013/90mins/ctba. Dir: Gabriela Cowperthwaite.

Performing orca Tilikum has killed several people whilst in captivity. Shocking footage and interviews from the staff explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment and pressures from the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry. This emotionally wrenching story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals. A mesmerizing psychological thriller with a killer whale at its centre, this is the first film since Grizzly Man to show how nature can get revenge on man when pushed to its limits.

Clockwise from top left: The Bling Ring, Days of Grace, The Deep

May’s Cannes festival saw some fantastic films in competition, including the hotly anticipated The Bling Ring by Sofia Coppola telling the disturbing tale of a group of teenagers who went on the rampage in the Hollywood hills, tearing through the homes of the rich and famous. We’re looking forward to Days of Grace, a fast paced look at the underbelly of Mexican drug gangland and the new drama The Deep which sees the return of one of Iceland’s most successful and prolific directors, Baltasar Kormakur [Jar City, 101 Reykjavik], with a film inspired by real life events, when a fishing boat in 1984 capsized in freezing cold waters. The charming new comedy Frances Ha co-written and starring indie darling Greta Gerwig will be a summer favourite and seventeen years after his first foray into the vampire genre with Interview with the Vampire, director Neil Jordan is back with the fantasy thriller Byzantium, starring Gemma Arterton. Tales From Earthsea director, Goro Miyazaki returns with the gorgeous From Up On Poppy Hill and we’ve some dark secrets to uncover in the beautifully remastered Chinatown, Point Blank and Repulsion. We’ll also be continuing our season of comedy films with the Go Faster Stripe team and bringing you the very best music films around with the popular Cine Phonic, in addition to our summer holiday family friendly features.
