Baffling venue leads Wales’ creative sector [Extract from an interview with Andy Eagle in the iwa news analysis magazine ‘clickonwales’]

Chapter has intrigued, interested and sometimes baffled me over the last 20 years I have been working in Wales. Now in post for close to nine months I can confirm that it is still interesting, intriguing and also sometimes quite baffling. Unique is a word that maybe we overuse in selling ourselves in the arts. In the case of Chapter I believe the term is justified. Forty years ago Chapter grew out of the integrity and dedication of artists and the art in which they believed. It did not come out of a feasibility study or a regeneration project but truly from a grass roots desire to place art at the heart of this part of west Cardiff. Since then Chapter’s community roots have become stronger and more embedded. Today its role and importance is undoubted, to the extent that it could almost be described as part of the establishment — though many a loyal Chapterite would shudder at the suggestion. Yet many challenges remain. As we head into the next 40 years can we do so without the hint of a middle-aged spread? While these are challenging times Wales has not seen the same level of savage cuts in the arts as has been the case over the border. The Welsh Government sees their intrinsic social value to a greater extent than Westminster. Nevertheless the public investment squeeze is on and Chapter needs a robust business base and operational structure so that creativity and artistic risk can be supported and developed further in line with the aspirations of our key public stakeholders and audiences. With a sustainable business base Chapter can thrive and develop enormously in the next few years and the potential is almost limitless. I want Chapter to be recognised internationally as Wales’ leading arts centre where artistic experimentation and boldness are encouraged and where different types of audiences are engaged. Since our redevelopment of our café-bar numbers coming through the doors have at times been overwhelming.

The result is a genuinely inclusive social space that is an artistic opportunity in itself. Mothers and toddlers, knitting circles, youth groups and artists all mingle together. The opportunity and challenge for us is to ensure our visitors engage in the arts programme that we deliver in the building as well as in the wider community through our participation programmes. Core to Chapter’s values is its support for emerging and aspiring Welsh artists, whether they are filmmakers, visual or performance artists. We are building on this through our involvement in the Creative Producer for Dance initiative over the next three years in partnership with Arts Council Wales and the tender-winning Creative Producer Carole Blade. Developing exciting artistic partnerships is one of my key plans for the future. We have over 30 SMEs in the creative industries based in Market House across the road from the main building. Closer ties are being discussed with our resident companies Earthfall, Ffotogallery, Bafta Cymru and the recently housed Theatr Iolo. These partnerships will form the basis of future investment at Chapter. At the same time we must address our environmental responsibilities and provide as much opportunity for the creative sector to expand. After all, this is now recognised as a key economic driver for both the Cardiff and the wider Welsh economy. Our aim is to unlock the potential of the incipient talent that surrounds us and enable it to flourish. Andy Eagle, Director

Nothing Like Something Happens Anywhere Fri 6 July — Sun 2 September • Gwe 6 Gorffenaf — Sul 2 Medi STAN DENNISTON, GEORGE SHAW, MAAIKE SCHOOREL, UGO RONDINONE, BEN RIVERS, FRANCIS ALŸS AND ANDY HOLDEN Taking its title from a line in Philip Larkin’s ‘I Remember I Remember’ this exhibition explores the meaningfulness of ‘events’ in our lives, as opposed to the unadorned fact of ‘living’. The work explores the nearly imperceptible evolutions in everyday life; the slow history that lies beneath the surface of culture and contrasts with the highpaced changes dominating the surface. The works delve beneath the rapid succession of events on a human scale, to find the slower currents typical of the history of human groups — relating to their environment and the structures that shape societies. The social history described by historian Fernand Braudel as an “anonymous history, working in the depths and most often in silence”. This exhibition has received financial support from the Arts Council of Wales and the Belgian Embassy and is part of the Chapter 40 celebrations.

Texts — theoretical, fictional and tangential — are selected to draw out different aspects of the work on show. Art in the Bar Pete Williams: 3.20m 48.08f 5910s Until Sun 19 August • Tan Sul 19 Awst This exhibition marks the culmination of work which Williams began during a three month residency at Aberystwyth Arts Centre. Initially consisting of drawings, photographs, notes and ideas it has transformed into prints and largescale works produced specifically for Chapter. Utilising traditional methods of printmaking — woodcuts/engraving, lithography and stone — Williams uses print as a vehicle with endless possibilities. Each journey is mapped and logged in the form of a series of drawings and photographs, that ultimately become realised as large woodcut block and prints, displayed here side by side on the Caffi Bar walls. The pace, time and distance is logged, which in turn informs the title of each work. A passion for running is a key inspiration in the work including the views experienced during Williams’ ‘journeys’. Like a form of relaxation, it is a time to gather thoughts and mentally unwind. The pace of running is important — methodical and rhythmical, which is replicated in the working and cutting of the block. Biography Pete Williams (b.1965, London) studied at Cheltenham School of Art & Design and received an MA in Fine Art, Printmaking at Brighton University. He is currently UWIC Associate Lecturer in BA/MA printmaking and the Founder/Director of Print Market Project — a new Sculpture & Printmaking Workshop. Solo exhibitions include Open Studio, Aberystwyth Arts Centre; RK Burt Gallery, London (2012) and ‘New York Commercial’, Blackburn 20/20 Gallery, New York (2011). Group exhibitions include ‘New Prints’, Autumn International Print Centre, Chelsea, New York and Visual Arts Center at The University of Texas, Austin (2011). Forthcoming group exhibitions include ‘Between Spaces’, Aberystwyth Arts Centre Gallery (2013) and ‘New Works’, RK Burt Gallery, London (2012). Recent commissions include Hapus Ice-Cream Factory, Machen Mountain Sculpture Trail, Wales (2010); KALEID editions Gallery, London; Sydney Nolan Trust, Wales (both 2009). Williams was awarded an international collaborative residency with Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop in New York, including a solo exhibition (2011); Artist in Residence at Aberystwyth Arts Centre (2010) and International Artist in Residence at Leitrim Sculpture Centre, Ireland (2008). www.printmarketproject.com

Experimentica Study Course: An Introduction to Performance Art Wed 12 Sept — Wed 14 Nov • 7-9pm • Mer 12 Medi — Mer 14 Tach Following the success of last year’s course, and as part of this year’s Experimentica 12: UNSEEN, we are offering a ten-week course — on Wednesday evenings plus two Saturday sessions — which gives you the opportunity to study, gain practical experience and discuss the history and contemporary understanding of performance art. ‘Performance art’ as a term describes artworks that range from art actions, experimental performance, installation and live art, as well as dance and theatre. It continues to influence much of contemporary practice at venues like Chapter as well as galleries, museums, festivals and artist-run projects across the world. This course gives a practical and accessible guide to understanding how performance art is made and considered as well as an opportunity to collaborate, whether as audience, artist, writer or organiser. The course was created by Davida Hewlett, who will lead the sessions with invited guest artists. Included in the course is a pass to Experimentica 12: UNSEEN which takes place from Wed 21 — Sun

25 November, and provides a valuable opportunity to see and discuss the work of many artists working in Wales, the UK and internationally. Places on the course are limited and a commitment to attend the whole course is requested. To find out more, please contact experimentica@chapter.org or visit www.chapter.org to book a place. We are also inviting applications for two places subsidised by Experimentica. To apply for a subsidised place, email an application of no more than one side of A4 explaining your interest in and commitment to attending the course to experimentica@chapter.org. The deadline for applications for subsidised places is Fri 20 July and the decision will be made by the end of July. A second-level course will be held between January and March 2013. Details in the September magazine. £75/£50 Supported by the Arts Council of Wales.

Sports Play

by Elfriede Jelinek

Thu 19 + Fri 20 July • 7.30pm • Iau 19 + Gwe 20 Gorff London-based performing arts company Just a Must, in partnership with Austrian Cultural Forum London, stages the English language premiere of a play by Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek. This is a rare opportunity to see Jelinek’s work on stage as part of a UK-wide tour. Sports Play (written in 1998) explores the marketing and sale of the human body and emotions in sport. Jelinek questions contemporary society’s obsession with fitness and body image and rejects the romanticised notion of sport as portrayed in today’s media. She considers sport as a mass phenomenon and as a medium for chauvinism and fanaticism — sport as war. At the same time this is one of her most personal plays in which she styles herself as “Elfie Electra” and mixes anger with self-irony. Jelinek was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2004 for her ‘musical flow of voices and counter-voices in novels and plays that, with extraordinary linguistic zeal, reveal the absurdity of society’s clichés and their subjugating power’. Translated by Penny Black with Karen Jürs-Munby. Directed by Vanda Butkovic. Dramaturgy by Karen Jürs-Munby. Scenography and video by Simon Donger. Costumes by Meni Kourmpeti. Lighting design by Ana Vilar. Produced by Berislav Juraic.

Tom Marshman Legs 11

Tue 24 July • 8pm • Maw 24 Gorff Alan M. Kent’s award-winning play tells the true story of West African slave Joseph Emidy. Born in Guinea at the height of colonialism, he was captured by the Portugese, then kidnapped by the British Navy, serving as a fiddler during the French wars. Landing at Falmouth in 1800, he was presented with a magical tin violin and went on to become a famous violinist and composer. The Tin Violin is a re-imagining of Joseph’s journey, rich with dialect, dance and decadence. From the oppression of slavery to encounters with mad sailors, the potty queen of Portugal and a chorus of Cornish fishwives; it’s a thoughtful and funny exploration of identity, creativity and belonging. Bish Bash Bosh is a production company specialising in new work that responds to Cornish issues, trends and events.

Dark Horse Fri 29 June — Thu 5 July Gwe 29 Mehefin — Iau 5 Gorff USA/2011/85min/ctba. Dir: Todd Solondz. With Jordan Gelber, Selma Blair, Christopher Walken, Mia Farrow.

A Fantastic Fear of Everything Fri 29 June — Thu 5 July Gwe 29 Mehefin — Iau 5 Gorff UK/2012/100mins/15. Dir: Crispian Mills, Chris Hopewell. With Simon Pegg, Amara Karan, Paul Freeman.

Todd Solondz (Happiness, Welcome to the Dollhouse) returns to form with this acerbic antiromantic comedy. Twenty-something manchild Abe is at war with himself, living at home with his parents and working for the family firm. Railing against the hypocrisy he sees at the heart of his family while taking no responsibility for his own arrested development, he is swept off his feet by an attractive woman who clearly has problems of her own. Both hilarious and, at times, excruciating, Solondz delivers his trademark ability to punch through social niceties.

Jack is a children’s author turned crime novelist whose detailed research into the lives of Victorian serial killers has left him persecuted by the fear of being murdered and turned him into a paranoid wreck. He’s thrown a lifeline when a mysterious Hollywood executive takes a sudden and inexplicable interest in his script. But what should be his big break rapidly turns into his big breakdown and he’s forced to confront his worst demons; among them his love life, his laundry and the origin of all fear.

France/2011/99mins/subtitled/12A. Dir: Ismael Ferroukhi. With Tahar Rahim, Lubna Azabal, Michael Lonsdale.

Social misfit Dom works the nightshift in a small hotel near the industrial sea port of Le Havre. One night, a woman called Fiona arrives with no luggage and no shoes and tells Dom she is a fairy, granting him three wishes. It is love at first sight. After making two of his wishes come true, Fiona mysteriously disappears. Searching high and low, heart-broken Dom eventually finds her in the psychiatric hospital where she has been committed. The third feature from anarchic comedy trio Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon and Bruno Romy, The Fairy is a colourful burlesque comedy that succeeds in being both charming and hilarious.

Exploring a fascinating historical moment, this is the little-known true story of Muslim agents who fought for the French Resistance. The film is set in a Paris mosque during the WWII occupation, where false papers were produced enabling hundreds of Jews to evade capture. Initially operating as a wheeler and dealer on the black market, Younge (Tahar Rahim from A Prophet) is recruited by the Secret Services to spy on the mosque. As he spends more time there he comes into the orbit of a deeply charismatic cabaret singer and a mysterious woman who sparks his political awakening.

Waylaid by traffic, violent political protests, celebrity funerals and the collapse of a world economy, his journey is anything but typical. During the course of his odyssey Packer’s paranoia intensifies and he starts piecing together clues about the spectacular wildness unfolding in the world around him as the limo lurches toward an increasingly uncertain future. In a return to the anxiety of a technology-driven modern world, director David Cronenberg delves into the novel by Don DeLillo exploring what happens to people when corporations are more influential than governments.

Cult Films Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel Fri 6 July • Gwe 6 Gorff USA/2012/95mins/15. Dir: Alex Stapleton. With: Roger Corman, Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino

“King of the B movies”, Roger Corman epitomises American entrepreneurialism and independence. At heart a genteel man who is also responsible for distributing some of the most highbrow European film of the last 40 years, he has a throbbing mischievous vein and a can-do attitude that has enabled him to make some of the most anarchic and exciting movies ever seen. He is directly responsible for nurturing the careers of the raging bulls of the 70s Hollywood independents such as Jack Nicholson, Robert de Niro, Martin Scorsese, Peter Bogdanovich, Johnathon Demme and Peter Fonda. Here they pay tribute to this uncompromising movie mogul and celebrate his warmth, fun and world-changing approach to the industry. Part of Chapter Burger Fest. See page 48.

With this unprecedented access, Robert Weide [Curb Your Enthusiasm] followed the notoriously private film legend over a year and a half to create this biography. Beginning with Allen’s childhood, this film chronicles the trajectory and longevity of Allen’s career from teen writer to TV scribe, from standup comedian to award-winning writer-director averaging one film-per-year for more than 40 years. Exploring Allen’s writing habits, directing and relationship with his actors first-hand, interviews with A-listers, writing partners and family and friends provide insight and backstory to the usually inscrutable filmmaker. Bad Film Club: Sharktopus Sun 1 July • Sul 1 Gorff USA/2010/89mins/15. Dir: Declan O’Brien. With Eric Roberts, Karem Bursin, Sara Marakul Lane.

Nicko and Jo bring their irreverent live commentary to one last bad film before a well-deserved summer break. And this is certainly one to get your teeth in to, as a half-shark/half-octopus created for the military (as you do) kicks up a whole lot of terror in Mexico. With all the fake location detail of Shark Attack 3, none of the plot of Megashark vs. Giant Octopus and all the acting skills of Spring Break Shark Attack, how can you possibly say no?

Juan Of The Dead Fri 20 — Thu 26 July • Gwe 20 — Iau 26 Gorff Cuba/2011/92mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Alejandro Brugues. With Alexis Diaz de Villegas, Jorge Molina, Andros Perugorria.

When a zombie epidemic breaks out in Havana, it takes a while for the locals to notice. At first, the living dead stumbling about in raggedy clothes, looking dazed and hungry blend right in with the rest of the citizens of post-revolution Cuba. However, as the social order on the island begins to crumble, two slacker friends, Juan and Lazaro, realise something strange is afoot and there’s money to be made hiring themselves out to people who need to put their beloved ones out of their misery. Taking repeated swipes at Castro’s revolution and finding gags aplenty in the political climate, Brugues film celebrates the endurance and ingenuity of people who have managed to survive on a crumbling island stranded in time and starved of resources.

Prometheus Fri 20 — Thu 26 July • Gwe 20 — Iau 26 Gorff USA/2012/124mins/15. Dir: Ridley Scott. With Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce.

Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define with this muchanticipated prequel to Alien. Journeying to one of the most dangerous corners of the universe, a team of scientists follows a clue to the origins of mankind on earth and find far more than they could have hoped, or bargained for. There are some fine performances by an array of talent but Michael Fassbender is maybe the most compelling as an Aryan synthetic with a penchant for Lawrence Of Arabia.

It’s 2018 and, unknown to the world, in 1945 a group of scientists from the Nazi fortress of New Swabia in the Antarctic escaped to the dark side of the moon. In complete isolation, in a military base known as the ‘Black Sun’, an Armada of Nazi UFOs is being constructed with the intention of returning to Earth to subjugate the population. Panic arises however when a US space shuttle lands and so sets into action mission ‘meteor Blitzkrieg’ and a party of Nazis head for New York — but secret agent Renate has her own plans. Made with the support of a vast internet community, this fulfils all the criteria for an over-the-top, trashy B-movie-cumexploitation film full of cheap thrills.

Based on the true story of a scandal at the heart of the Danish royal family in the 18th century, this enjoyable and visually austere drama shows how love can change a country forever. The enigmatic Count Johann Friedrich Struensee is best friend and physician to the Danish King Christian VII, enjoying all the privileges that come with it, including the power of de-facto regent with the ability to push through much needed political reforms. The King is mentally unstable and has spurned his wife Queen Caroline Mathilda, the sister of British King George III. At a time when he is trying to guide the country through a difficult period, he and the Queen fall in love and this puts all his noble endeavours at risk as the public turn against them.

Fri 13 — Thu 19 July • Gwe 13 — Iau 19 Gorff

Fri 13 — Thu 19 July • Gwe 13 — Iau 19 Gorff

Norway/2012/117mins/subtitled/12A. Dir: Marius Hoist. With Stellan Skarsgård, Bejamin Helstad, Kristoffer Joner.

USA/2011/90mins/15. Dir: Lynn Shelton. With Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt, Mark Duplass.

This brooding, evocative drama is based on the true story of the infamous Bastøy Boys Home correctional facility in Norway in 1915. It begins with the arrival of seventeen-year-old Erling, a rumoured murderer. He immediately clashes with the island facility’s governor who believes manual labour, rigid discipline, and harsh punishment are the only methods that can turn the boys into honourable members of society. Refusing to accept the constant abuse, Erling slowly rouses the rest of the boys out of their resigned existence, and encourages them to fight to lift their spirits. With strong performances from Stellan Skarsgård as the governer and a cast of emerging young actors, this is a compelling and timely story of defiance after hypocrisy transforms discipline and order into oppression.

Following the success of her award winning film Humpday, Lynn Shelton weaves another compellingly human story. Lost in an emotional funk one year after his brother’s death, Jack takes his best friend Iris up on her offer for a reflective week of solitude at her family’s remote island retreat. Upon arriving at the house, Jack discovers that Iris’ sister Hannah had the same idea. The two spend an awkward evening together, setting in motion an emotionally twisted tale of sisters, brothers and best friends. Shelton once again honestly explores the complexities of interpersonal relationships while gently poking fun at her characters’ predicaments.

UK/1984/94mins/18. Dir: Neil Jordan. With Angela Lansbury, David Warner, Stephen Rea.

A collection of enchanting and rare fairy tale and fantasy shorts that date back to the birth of cinema with newly-commissioned scores from composers including Chris Watson, Phillip Jeck and Fennesz. Utilising the expressionist style of silhouette animation, Reiniger is one of the great figures in animated film, claimed by the avantgarde and rediscovered by the art world in the 1970s when she was in her 80s. These are timeless magical tales that have been enjoyed by children for generations.

The Shout Sun 8 + Tue 10 July • Sul 8 + Maw 10 Gorff UK/1976/83mins/15. Dir: Jerry Skolimoswki. With Alan Bates, Susannah York, John Hurt, Tim Curry.

The sun beams down on a village green where people are playing cricket. It is the annual competition between the villagers and members of the local mental hospital. Sitting in the scoring tent are two patients, Crossley and Graves. Crossley tells a terrifying story of how he had supernatural powers that allowed him to kill with his shout. Although Robert dismisses it as an insane fantasy, as the match continues, the proceedings take a decidedly sinister turn. Winner of Grand Prize of the Jury — Cannes Film Festival, 1978.

UK/1948/136mins/U. Dir: Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger. With Anton Walbrook, Moira Shearer.

Czech/2001/132mins/15. Dir: Jan Svankmajer. With Veronia Zilkova, Jan Harti.

Powell and Pressburger’s influential musical tragedy set the stage for the climactic dance ballets that became a staple of the MGM musicals with this glorious take on Hans Christian Anderson’s tragic fairy tale about betrayal, love and art. Vicky is a young ballerina starring in a ballet ‘The Red Shoes’. Like her character, she is irresistibly drawn to dancing. When her life becomes split between her simple human passion and her almost unhealthy devotion to her artistic profession, she is convinced to do just one last performance.

When a childless couple learn that they cannot have children, it causes great distress. To ease his wife’s pain, the man finds a piece of root in the backyard, chops it and varnishes it into the shape of a child. However the woman takes the root as her baby and starts to pretend that it is real.

Billy Fisher is known to his mates as Billy Liar because of his vivid imagination. This film version of the Keith Waterhouse/Willis Hall stage play ‘visualises’ some of Billy’s more outrageous fabrications as he periodically escapes the drudgery of his job at a funeral parlour by conjuring up impossible adventures, usually involving the conquest of women. In one of her first film roles, Julie Christie plays one of two ‘real’ girls who wish that Billy would come down to earth and pop the question.

As Ofelia’s bed-ridden mother lies pregnant and immobilised and her high-ranking stepfather remains determined to crush a nearby guerilla uprising, the young girl ventures into an elaborate stone labyrinth presided over by the mythical faun, Pan. Del Toro’s Alice in Wonderland for grown-ups blends the horrors of both reality and fantasy with this extraordinary, spellbinding fable. Told through the eyes of a little girl whose imaginary world is inhabited by nightmarish creatures, Pan’s Labyrinth is a visually imaginative and allegorical take on the fears she faced in Spain during WWII.

UK/2012/91mins/12A. Dir: Regan Hall. With Rupert Graves, Bradley James, Lily James.

Two girls from very different backgrounds gear up for an athletics championship and discover a lot about each other and themselves along the way. Sassy, streetwise Shania initially clashes with determined, middle class Lisa but they soon realise that their rivalry off the track must be overcome for their ambitions to be realised. With strong female characters and a warm beating heart this debut feature from Regan Hall takes us on a timely and inspiring journey into the minds of high powered athletics.

Salute Fri 13 — Thu 19 July • Gwe 13 — Iau 19 Gorff USA/2012/120mins/ctba. Dir: Matt Norman.

This is the tale of three brave athletes Peter Norman, Tommie Smith and John Carols who, in one inflammatory moment of political protest in 1968, made a stand that had socio-political ramifications and destroyed their careers. Tommie Smith won Olympic gold for the USA but this achievement was disregarded by the committee who disciplined him and John Carols for giving the Black Power salute on the winners’ podium at the height of the American Civil Rights conflicts. Australian Peter Norman declared unity with his fellow sportsmen and faced a barrage of negative press on his return, despite achieving the still unbeaten Australian 200m world record. Told by Norman’s nephew who captured their reunion only months before his uncle’s death, this is a story of defiance that deserves to be told as we indulge in the pomp of the international celebrations in London.

Salute

UK/2012/90mins/12A. Dir: Sam Blair.

Filmed over four years this fascinating documentary follows James Ellington, Richard Alleyne and Jeanette Kwayke, three up-andcoming British sprinters on their journey from the grassroots of athletics to the international stage. The film is both a gripping portrait of the athletes in training and competition and a deeply personal account of their lives — revealing victory, defeat, agony, ecstasy and the simple trials of growing up. This is an inspiring but genuine portrait of Britain’s young and a penetrating study of the art of sprinting, peeling back the layers so we can finally understand everything it means to them as they wait on the start-line for the gun to fire.

Long distance running is a way of life in the Arsi region of Ethiopia. In a country long associated with poverty, famine and war, world-record beating athletes are a great source of pride. Many of the world’s greatest runners hail from Bekoji, a remote town in the southern Highlands. In the Beijing Olympics, runners from Bekoji won all four gold medals in the long distance track events — more medals than most industrial countries. This is the latest feature from award-winning documentary filmmaker Jerry Rothwell (Donor Unknown, Heavy Load). Shot over three years, the film follows the village’s young athletes as they move from school track to national competition and from childhood to adulthood.

Marina Abramovic, The Artist Is Present

Fri 6 — Thu 12 July • Gwe 6 — Iau 12 Gorff USA/2012/106mins/ctba. Dir: Matthew Akers. With Marina Abramovic, James Franco, Ulay.

Seductive, fearless, and outrageous, Marina Abramović has been redefining what art is for nearly 40 years. Using her own body as a vehicle, pushing herself beyond her limits — and at times risking her life in the process — she creates performances that challenge, shock and move. This documentary follows Abramovic as she prepares for what may be the most important moment of her life: a major new retrospective of her work at The Museum of Modern Art. To be given a retrospective at one of the world’s premier museums is the most exhilarating sort of milestone. For Marina, it is far more: it is the chance to finally silence the question she has been hearing for four decades: “But why is this art?”

“an easy way in for viewers unaware of Abramovic’s work, while easily illuminating enough to satisfy her enthusiastic fanbase” Screen International

In recent years artist Ai Weiwei has garnered international attention for his political provocations as much as his ambitious art. This film examines this complex intersection of artistic practice and social activism. Beijing-based journalist Alison Klayman gained unprecedented access to the artist and documented his life during the creation of work for major museums and the famous birds-nest stadium in Beijing including playful intimate exchanges with family members and increasingly public clashes with the Chinese government. A nuanced portrait of both the artist and contemporary China, this film provides an insight into the art world’s most compelling figures.

“an essential portrait of a key contemporary figure” — The Guardian

Llygaid Sgwâr Gan Philip Wyn Jones Yn Whitechapel, Llundain ym 1888, llofruddiwyd cyfres o ferched ifanc a rhwygo allan eu horganau. Dyna egluro’r llysenw ‘Jack the Ripper’. Dyma sail y nofel, ‘The Lodger’ (Mrs Belloc Downes, 1913) a’r ddrama gyfatebol, ‘Who is He?’ a welwyd gan Alfred Hitchcock. Erbyn iddo weld y ddrama roedd Hitchcock wedi cyfarwyddo dwy ffilm yn yr Almaen i gwmni Gainsborough oedd yng ngofal Michael Balcon ac wedi syrthio dan hud cyfarwyddwyr fel F.W.Murnau (Nosferatu, 1922) a Fritz Lang (Metropolis, 1926) a’u defnydd o onglau camera anghyffredin a goleuo dramatig. Mae eu dylanwad i’w weld yn glir ar The Lodger (1927). Fel prif actor, sef y lletywr, cafodd Hitchcock brif actor Gainsborough, Ivor Novello, oedd eisoes wedi gwneud deg ffilm, yn Lloegr, ar y Cyfandir, ac yn Hollywood — lle’r oedd wedi chwarae’r brif ran yn ffilm D.W.Griffith, The White Rose (1924). Gan fod Novello yn cael ei eilun-addoli gan filoedd, roedd awgrymu mai ef, efallai, oedd Jack the Ripper yn broblem ond roedd cyfarwyddo Hitchcock yn gwneud iddo edrych yn hynod amheus trwy gydol y ffilm! Mae’r ffilm yn gyforiog o driciau dyfeisgar Hitchcock gan gynnwys gosod nenfwd o wydr mewn ystafell er mwyn dangos Novello yn cerdded i fyny ac i lawr mewn cyfyng-gyngor. Mae perthynas yn datblygu rhwng merch y tŷ a Novello, er bod ganddi hi gariad sy’n blismon. Mae’r plismon cenfigennus hwn yn chwilio am Jack the Ripper ac yn penderfynu mai Novello yw’r dihiryn. Diweddglo cyffrous sy’n dilyn. Credai Hitchcock iddo gyflawni cryn gamp ond roedd Balcon wedi’i siomi. Credai nad oedd rhai golygfeydd yn gwneud synnwyr a bod gormod o gardiau teitl yn y ffilm. Cysylltodd ag Ivor Montagu; beirniad, cynhyrchydd a chyfarwyddwr uchel ei barch. Cyfarfu Montagu â Hitchcock a mynnu fod rhai golygfeydd yn cael eu hail-olygu neu eu hail-saethu a bod y 300 o gardiau teitl yn dod i lawr i 80. Yn anfoddog, ond gan wybod nad oedd ganddo ddewis, cytunodd Hitchcock. Roedd Montagu wedi achub y ffilm a gyrfa Hitchcock. Ym 1932 gwnaeth Maurice Elvey fersiwn sain o’r ffilm a Novello yn chwarae’r brif ran eto ac yn cyd-ysgrifennu’r sgript. Yn ôl ym 1918 Elvey oedd cyfarwyddwr yr epig arloesol, The Life Story of David Lloyd George. Dyw The Lodger (1932) ddim o’r un safon ond mae’n ffilm ddigon difyr. Mewn mannau mae’n hynod debyg i ffilm Hitchcock ond mae Novello yn cael arddangos ei ddawn fel cerddor trwy ganu’r piano yn ei lety. Mae’n gwbl amlwg mai ef ei hun sydd wedi cyfansoddi’r darnau hyn ac mae hyd yn oed yn eu canmol yng ngŵydd merch y tŷ! Mae’r plismon yn cael ei bortreadu gan Jack Hawkins ifanc iawn yn ymddangos yn ei ail ffilm. Difyr hefyd yw diweddglo’r ffilm. Nid Novello, fel y prif gymeriad, yw Jack the Ripper ond mae ganddo frawd a Novello sy’n actio hwnnw hefyd, gan roi perfformiad gwirioneddol iasoer. Ar ôl cwblhau’r ffilm hon gwnaeth Novello dair ffilm arall cyn penderfynu, ym 1934, fod yn well ganddo actio o flaen cynulleidfa fyw na chamera a rhoddodd y gorau i’w yrfa fel actor ar y sgrin fawr. Where Do We Go Now? Fri 20 — Thu 26 July • Gwe 20 — Iau 26 Gorff Lebanon/France/Italy/Egypt/2011/100mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Nadine Labaki. With Nadine Labaki, Layla Hakim.

Rare indeed is a genuinely funny comedy about the religious divisions in the Middle East, even rarer one with the zest and joyful panache that Nadine Labaki (Caramel) shows here. This entertaining parable is set in a mythical village cut off from the rest of the world, where Christians and Muslims live happily side-by-side. When this harmony is threatened by a variety of outside influences, the women of the village band together to keep their hot-headed men from fighting.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel Fri 27 July — Fri 10 Aug • Gwe 27 Gorff — Fri 10 Awst UK/2012/124mins/12A. Dir: John Madden. With Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson.

When a group of British friends decide to retire to the less expensive and seemingly exotic India they are enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel. Back by popular demand and featuring a star-studded ‘who’s who’ of British talent, this is a charming and enjoyable ride.

“Charming, delightful and amusing — just what you’d expect from the star-studded cast of veterans.” — Empire

Nostalgia For The Light Fri 27 July — Thu 2 Aug • Gwe 27 Gorff — Iau 2 Awst France/2010/90mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: Patricio Guzman. With: Gaspar Galaz, Lautaro Núñez, Luís Henríquez.

Screened to rapturous critical acclaim at festivals worldwide, this exquisite documentary from Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzmán (The Battle of Chile, Salvador Allende) explores the Atacama Desert, where 10,000 feet above sea level, astronomers work to observe the stars in a sky so translucent that views extend to the boundaries of our universe. But when eyes - and Guzmán’s camera — are lowered to the ground, this unique place also evidences layers of disturbing human history. It’s so dry that it’s possible to find pre-Colombian mummies, the bodies of 19th century explorers and, most terribly, the remains of political prisoners ‘disappeared’ after Pinochet’s rise to power in 1973. So as astronomers look for gorgeous new vistas in the heavens, women search the earth for signs that their loved ones were dumped in the ground, in an attempt to reclaim their families’ histories and lay ghosts to rest.

“Stunningly beautiful. I don’t know how you can put more into a film, or make one that’s more deeply moving.” Stuart Klawans, The Nation

Revenge Of The Electric Car

The Descendants

Fri 3 — Thu 9 Aug • Gwe 3 — Iau 9 Awst

Fri 10 — Thu 16 Aug • Gwe 10 — Iau 16 Awst

USA/2011/90mins/ctba. Dir: Chris Paine.

USA/2011/115mins/15. Dir: Alexander Payne. With George Clooney, Judy Greer, Beau Bridges.

When electric cars first appeared on the market in the 1990s, mass production and commercialization was abruptly, and dubiously, shut down; a story told in Chris Paine’s first documentary Who Killed The Electric Car? Just a few short years later, the race is back on to develop an affordable, stylish electric car and win over a sceptical public. Paine’s new film goes behind the closed doors of Nissan, GM, the innovative California start-up Tesla Motors and an independent car converter named Greg “Gadget” Abbott to find the story of the global resurgence of electric cars. This new generation of automobile emerges as the future: fast, furious and cleaner than ever.

Killer Joe Fri 3 — Thu 9 Aug • Gwe 3 — Iau 9 Awst USA/2011/103mins/18. Dir: William Friedkin. With Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon.

When 22-year-old Chris is in hock to a drug lord, he needs money quick and stumbles on the scheme of hiring a hit man to dispatch his mother, whose $50,000 life insurance policy is supposed to go to his sister Dottie. Chris has heard of Joe Cooper, a creepy, crazy Dallas cop who moonlights as a contract killer. Although Joe usually demands cash up front, he finds himself willing to bend the rules and takes Chris’ attractive younger sister, Dottie as carnal collateral. A garish, Southwestern Gothic tale, Killer Joe is a shocking, sexy and violent black comedy that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Revenge Of The Electric Car

Having cemented his place as the king of the American indie black comedy with Election, About Schmidt and Sideways, director Alexander Payne moves into more tender terrain with this five times Oscar-nominated tale of a man dealing with his wife’s critical coma. Hawaiian lawyer Matt King has always been the backup parent, so the challenge of shepherding his two wayward daughters — a ten-year-old emotional tornado and a snarky teenage tearaway — is no breeze. In addition, King must come to terms with the secrets his wife may have kept from him. While the subject is serious, the touch is light, and supporting characters offer plenty of space for comedy, from bleak humour to sassy dialogue and even slapstick.

What happens when a great artist’s legacy is so mysterious and enigmatic that no one seems to know whether he’s dead or alive? Detroit singer-songwriter Rodriguez released two wonderful albums of profound lyricism in the US in the early 1970s before disappearing from the public eyes amidst dark rumours that he had killed himself on stage. Two fans trace clues around the globe trying to find out what happened to their idol. A film of transcendent beauty, the truth is stranger than his fans, the filmmakers or any of his family believed it could be. This is a chance to rediscover a legend in this awardwinning musical detective story.

Fri 24 — Thu 30 Aug • Gwe 24 — Iau 30 Awst

France/2010/90mins/15/subtitled. Dir: Lola Doillon. With Kristin Scott Thomas, Pio Marmai.

USA/2012/116mins/ctba. Dir: Sarah Polley. With Michelle Williams, Luke Kirby, Seth Rogen, Sarah Silverman

An act of revenge takes an unexpected turn in this psychological drama from French writer and director Lola Doillon. Anna flees a house on the outskirts of Paris and returns home, careful to tell no one where she’s been or what she’s been doing. The next day, after an ordinary day of work as a hospital obstetrician, Anna stops at a police station and reports that she had been kidnapped by the husband of a former patient. This intense and at times claustrophobic drama explores the way in which their relationship changes over the duration of their time together from contempt to something more complex as Scott Thomas’s arrogant loner comes to appreciate the actions of her guard.

7 Days in Havana

When Margot meets Daniel, their chemistry is intense and immediate. But Margot is happily married to Lou. However, when she learns that Daniel lives across the street, the certainty about her domestic life begins to fall apart. Stealing moments together throughout the Toronto summer, their draw towards each other is heightened by their restraint. Director Polley [Away From Her] paints a swelteringly hot, bright and colourful indie picture as Williams and the rest lead us through the question of what long-term relationships do to love, sex and our images of ourselves.

2012/UK/106mins/15. Dir: Ken Loach. With John Henshaw, Roger Allam, Daniel Portman.

Seven directors offer their own unique visions of contemporary Cuba in this drama of intersecting lives set over the course of seven days. The film focusses on some of the many ways in which people experience this complex and iconic country, including a tourist’s initial impressions of the common struggles, small pleasures experienced by the locals and a religious Yoruba family preparing to make an offering against the intense fervour of an exorcism. Selected for Un Certain Regard at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, this unusual film offers a beautiful glimpse of a country through the eyes of some of the world’s most acclaimed filmmakers.

When ex-offender Robbie holds his new-born son for the first time, he swears that his child will not have the same tragic life that he has led. Escaping a jail sentence by the skin of his teeth, he is given one last chance while serving a community service order. He and his friends visit a whiskey distillery and come to realise that the drinks business might offer them an unlikely chance at redemption.

According to a centuries-old code of law, this entitles the dead man’s family to take the life of a male from Nik’s family as retribution. His uncle in jail and his father in hiding, Nik is the prime target and confined to the home while his younger sister Rudina is forced to leave school and take over their father’s business. After 9pm Chapter, particularly the bar, becomes a more adult-focussed environment and much less suitable for younger children. Of course if your child is in a screening, performance, workshop or other event that started before 9pm that’s fine — you just won’t be able to hang around with them in the public spaces when the event ends. Please let us know what you think about this — we’re trying to keep the venue safe and suitable for all our customers but it’s a difficult area and one we’re keen to get right. Eating Green Sat 14 July • 11am–6pm • Sad 14 Gorff

Community Garden Last year’s Eating Green went down a storm and we’re starting to get a sneaking suspicion that you like your food as much as we do. From 11am–6pm you can explore our local food market amongst the veg and flowers in our community garden, grab a delicious Palooza special from the Chapter food stall, oh, and of course the local craft cider and perry will be flowing at our festival bar from 1pm–12am. And as an added extra Green City will be hosting local food and family friendly workshops throughout the day — more details can be found on our website.

Chapter Burger Festival Wed 4 — Sat 7 Jul • 5–9pm • Mer 4 — Sad 7 Gorff

Did you know that the best seller in the Caffi Bar is our mighty homemade Welsh beef burger? To celebrate our star performing patty and to coincide with Independence Day on 4 July, we’re hosting our first Burger Festival! We’re turning the Caffi Bar into an American diner and from 5pm each night you’ll be able to choose from one of our tantalizing classic, gourmet or veggie burgers. Keep an eye on our website for the full festival menu. Please note that our normal café menu will run throughout the festival. Café open: Mon-Sat 8.30am-9pm Sun 9.30am-9pm Breakfast: 9-11.30am (Sun 9.30-11.45am) Lunch: 11.30am-3pm (Sunday lunch served 12-3pm) Main Menu: 12-9pm (Sunday 3-9pm)
