Back in Mid April as Chapter turned 40 I was unveiled as the new, incoming Director. Since then I have been itching to get my feet under the table. As you turn the pages of this brochure I will have just started. My only achievements will have been locating my office and figuring out how the kettle works! To lead Chapter into its next 40 years is a huge honour. Chapter is a unique arts centre, a huge success story for Cardiff and Wales, and I pay tribute to the outgoing Director Janek for his efforts and thank him for the welcome he has given me. What makes Chapter unique is the way artistic ideas emerge (often over a coffee in the social space), develop and then come to fruition whether it is music, theatre, visual arts or cinema. That concept is dynamic, exciting and no doubt a little fraught at times. I look forward to working with the Chapter team and resident companies to continue producing, facilitating and presenting the very best work for our audiences and communities. This summer we have a fantastic programme lined up including a celebration of 25 years of the Magdalena Project, a season of films by Muppets maestro Jim Henson and an exhibition curated by Simon Morrissey in the gallery. You, our audiences and customers are key to the success of Chapter; quite simply we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it without you, particularly in these austere times. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible and receiving feedback on what we do well and what we can improve on. Chapter is an ideas place and so your ideas and opinions are valued. Curated by Simon Morrissey Fri 8 July — Sun 4 September • Gwe 8 Gorffennaf — Sul 4 Medi This exhibition takes its title from the refrain of ‘New Millennium Homes’, a song by Rage Against the Machine from their seminal album ‘Battle of Los Angeles’. Rage Against the Machine were renowned for their abrasive, polemic music and achieved huge commercial success in the 1990s, providing the perfect soundtrack to the idea of rebellion against authority. A Fire in the Master’s House is Set suggests a somewhat contradictory space — a space where ideas of political, social or youthful resistance are invoked but simultaneously overlaid with the idea of the latent or the mute. It sets out to create a proposition where ideas of opposition, social defiance, protest, hedonism — so often the social language of music culture — are distanced or enfolded within abstracted forms. Some of the works in the exhibition reference music’s cultural position as a repository for social and political expression, or moments of protest directly. But these references are often diffused or distorted into new forms. Set in direct dialogue with the more abstract languages in the exhibition an atmosphere is created that is suggestive of an incantation or spell being formulated through their combination to release a latent power held within the works. The exhibition colonises Chapter beyond the gallery space and even extends into the fabric of the city, intervening with colour, sound, objects and text to involve the public as participants in releasing the spirit of subversion and possibility held within its structures. How long have you worked at Chapter? 20 years. I got a job in the bar to get some holiday money together and I’m still here!

Annabelle Shelton draws influence from her social and geographical investigations of space and environment. She uses extensive photographic documentation, as well as memory, to create rich, detailed studies that are then re-presented using layers of watercolour and pencil. Interested in the Japanese art of ‘Ukiyo-e’ (traditionally meaning ‘sad world’), Annabelle takes the more recent translation ‘floating world’ as inspiration for her playful, dreamlike and sometimes surreal landscapes. She takes us on a personal journey, revealing elements of the familiar through her unique use of positive and negative space. Annabelle is exhibiting a number of previous works alongside a new painting specially created for Chapter. Born in 1968 in London, Annabelle attended Staffordshire University Stoke on Trent and UCE Birmingham, and is now based in Milton Keynes. Does that make you the longest standing member of staff!? Scarily, it almost does. Do you think your son Josh will still be working here in 20 years? No, he has a sense of adventure and will probably be halfway around the world by then! Best memory at Chapter? Camping out at the back of the building for our own Blair Witch experience is a bizarre one that springs to mind. Your favourite Chapter event? I loved the Peter Liversidge exhibition last year and the whole concept of ideas being made into reality. What do you get up to outside of Chapter? Currently lots of DIY — we’re doing up a house. Do you have any hidden talents? I take the occasional half decent snap. If money was no object what would you buy? A VW campervan would definitely be on my list. Who would you like to play you in a film of your life? Olivia Newton John What’s your favourite snack? Friday’s homemade cakes in the Box Office. Tell us a secret… I once did a Charlie’s Angel style kick to open the old Chapter front doors. (They shattered.)

Eating Green Sat 16 July • 10.30am–4.30pm • Sad 16 Gorffennaf To coincide with our celebration of local cider and perry we’re spending Saturday getting down to earth about food, and looking at how we can reduce the ecological footprint of the food and drink we consume. In collaboration with Canton Community Gardens, This is Rubbish, and RCMA Farmer’s Market, we’ve organised a jam-packed day full of art and craft activities designed to help us make sustainable food choices. From 10.30am — 12.30pm, Canton Community Gardens are hosting grow-your-own food gardening workshops and an introduction to Chapter’s new bees. From 10.30am — 4.30pm This is Rubbish are presenting a range of food waste-themed art and craft workshops and delicious games in their beautiful hand crafted Haj tent. They’ll be making delicious fruit smoothies from waste apples and hosting a roundtable talk with a special guest speaker. SWICA Carnival Night Magick: The Last Royal Wizard

An avid follower of developments in science, from microbiology to cosmology, her work is inspired by the wonderment of childhood and asks the essential questions of how and why. With lyrical, dynamic movement set amidst beautiful visual imagery and studded with truly mind-blowing science — from the truth about your cells to the scale of the universe you live in — Lifedeathlife is a witty and rewarding evening of theatre. Caroline has been at the heart of the cardiff dance and theatre scene for the last 17 years, and has worked with the likes of Earthfall, Marc Rees, Eddie Ladd, Gerald Tyler, Good Cop Bad Cop and Sean Tuan John. Lifedeathlife combines a newly commissioned song from James Williams, lighting design by Gerald Tyler and a stellar performance from Earthfall regular Lara Ward.

Tue 5 July • 6pm • Maw 5 Gorff Creative carnivalists South Wales Intercultural Community Arts are gearing up for a summer of spectacular outdoor events for all the family, with flamboyant costumes and dance traditions from Brazil and Trinidad accompanied by African song and drumming, samba reggae and joyous brass. Continuing their close relationship with Chapter, SWICA have agreed to come along and perform a free show in our foyer, featuring a cosmic carnival cast of scheming magicians, angelic spirits, shadowy demons, swashbuckling adventurers and Welsh Indian warriors! The greatest thinker of the Elizabethan age Dr John Dee (played by Cardiff street entertainer Dave Id) is bedevilled by his nemesis Edward Kelley (West African dancer and drummer Idrissa Camara), who is a cunning conman and false medium. Dee is forced by Kelley to conduct scientific séances or ‘Magick’, leading to his fall from Royal favour for dabbling in the occult.

Voices of Partition: Launch Night A Lifetime on Tiptoes/ Trwy Waed y Galon Sat 2 July • 8pm • Sad 2 Gorff The culmination of the Sangat series of events, this special evening celebrates the launch of Menna Elfyn’s Welsh translation of Mazhar Tirmazi’s play ‘A Lifetime on Tiptoes’. The tri-lingual publication in Panjabi, Welsh and English is a first for the Drama Association of Wales. The evening features readings by Menna Elfyn and Mazhar Tirmazi and live music by Kuljit Bhamra. A pioneer of the Bhangra phenomenon, Bhamra combines traditional Indian rhythms with western instruments to transform Panjabi music into a new sound. The evening is chaired by Chapter’s departing director Janek Alexander. Voices of Partition explores the tragic events surrounding, and the legacy of the partition of British India in 1947. A principle aim of the theatre debates has been to foster a spirit of reconciliation and healing between British Panjabi people of Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Sikh backgrounds and all other communities who have suffered the consequences of partitions. Who did she meet on the way? The scary Queen from Snow White. Ella with the glassy slippers and a pumpkin. And a tiger, of course! Or did she? Because Ruby likes telling tales... Created and directed by Sarah Argent, this enchanting musical play for the very young is based on children’s retellings of stories from around the world. Fri 8 + Sat 9 July • 8pm • Gwe 8 + Sad 9 Gorffennaf Titillation is a bold one woman show written and performed by Emily Underwood-Lee in collaboration with Sean Tuan John (The Brothers Very Grimm, Dead Head Show) and Kylie Ann Smith (uhhuh dance, Dirtyfitgrannies, Dance Bytes). It takes a humorous look at the post-operative body and considers who and what can be sexy after breast cancer. Based on Emily’s real-life experiences, Titillation takes liberties with the truth in order to imagine what might be. This performance features dancing breasts, prosthesis puppetry, sparkly scars, surgical imagery and gratuitous nudity. “When i got breast cancer I watched ‘Dirty Dancing’ over and over again. When I discovered that Patrick Swayze had pancreatic cancer, I started to dream that we would both get better and dance the last dance together. I am a terrible dancer (when I was fourteen I got asked to leave my ballet class) but he was a professional and a strong partner so we would still do the lift and it would be triumphant and fantastic!” £10/£8

Parthian Books The best of Nu Writing Wed 13 July • 7pm • Mer 13 Gorff An evening of poetry, prose and everything in between. This double launch night celebrates Parthian’s latest addition to the Bright Young Things series — Ten Of the Best — and the most recent Nu anthology — Memorable Firsts. The event features contributions from a host of award-winning writers — Siôn Tomos Owen, Mab Jones, Alan Kellermann, M.A. Oliver and Anna Lewis — who perform their work and talk about what inspires them, in discussion with publishing editor Lucy Llewellyn. ‘Nu2: Memorable Firsts’, edited and introduced by Tomos Owen, is a diverse collection of poetry and prose by young writers from as far afield as Portugal, Germany and Kazakhstan. £5 (can be redeemed against the price of the book on the night)

The Harri-Parris return to Chapter following a sell-out run in January. Join them for an evening of comedy, drama and song as they share their stories and secrets, dreams and fears, and reflect upon the ups and downs of living in rural west Wales; all from the comfort of their living room. The family occasionally speak a bit of their native Welsh, but don’t worry, the Slovakian farmhand will help to translate. Written and composed by Llinos Mai. Disgraced Victorian anatomist Tobias Flavian thought his monster hunting days were behind him. Trading in hooch, moonshine and miracle cures, Tobias and his faithful manservant have tried to scratch a living, but then something hideous comes along, waggling it’s cash. A disgusting beast. An arrogant gargantuan. A behemoth. A...merica. £8

We have the habit of popping up, often unexpectedly, in your beds, wombs, wars and conversations. You find us in your arms, nightmares and fondest memories. We come, for better or for worse, in guises as disparate as grandfather and son, priest and lover, yet apparently we all hail from Mars. No wonder being a man is problematic; it’s dangerous, pressured, ridiculous, funny and sometimes tragic, but it is also capable of being something beautiful. This richly textured fusion of theatre, dance, music and documentary returns to Chapter following two sell-out runs last year, and prior to shows at the Edinburgh Festivals. But you must have been interested enough to come. And it means that I must have a stake in all this. Putting things straight. Getting it all out in the open...” Stevenage is a multimedia solo performance by transgender artist Mandy Romero. Stevenage — the first English New Town — is an unlikely subject, but it’s a performance which beautifully explores many interlinked lives — the ‘young man in the brown corduroy suit’, an English pastoral poet, a young woman who moved south in the early years of the 20th century, a young film actor, a town, two villages and the lives of a post-war generation. Chapter study course: AN Introduction to Performance Art From September we are offering a ten week evening course which provides an opportunity to study, gain practical experience and discuss the history and contemporary understanding of performance art. ‘Performance art’ as a term describes artworks that range from art actions, experimental performance, installations and live art as well as dance and theatre. It continues to influence much of contemporary arts practice at venues like Chapter as well as museums, festivals and artist-run projects across the world. This course gives a practical and accessible guide to understanding how performance art is made and considered as well as an opportunity to collaborate, whether as audience, artist, writer or organiser. The course is led by artist Davida Hewlett and consists of 10 evening sessions from Tue 6 Sept — Tue 15 Nov with two day-long research days. Included in the course is a pass to Experimentica 11, our live and time-based art festival (11-16 October) providing a valuable opportunity to see and discuss the work of many artists working in Wales, the UK and internationally. This celebration aims to honour these women, their theatre and their knowledge and bring them together in Cardiff — the Project’s birthplace. Dawn Albinger

www.chapter.org Among the many acclaimed artists contributing to the programme are: Teresa Ralli and Ana Correa from the Peruvian company Yuyachkani; multi awardwinning writer, director and activist Patricia Ariza and Teatro La Mascara, Colombia; actress and director Madeline McNamara from New Zealand; and Julia Varley from Denmark’s Odin Teatret. Brigitte Cirla’s Voix Polyphonics are performing a special concert in Llandaff Cathedral; Geddy Aniksdal (Grenland Friteater, Norway) and Jolanta Krukowska of Poland’s leading company Akademia Ruchu are both designing unique celebratory events; Helen Varley Jamieson, inventor of the term ‘Cyperformance’, is running MagNet, a virtual programme space that will feature women from across the world who cannot make it to Cardiff. There will also be contributions from Welsh artists Sharon Morgan, Fern Smith and Eddie Ladd. This special gathering gives the chance to evaluate the legacy of the Magdalena Project and to identify future challenges. It’s an opportunity to experiment and propose new strategies for thinking, making, organising and, most importantly, continuing. The week of events features performances, work demonstrations, works-inprogress, debates, and workshops, streaming of selected events and online activities for those who cannot attend. A full festival ticket costs £240 and includes access to all events plus two meals a day in the festival restaurant. Please book early as capacity is limited. MagNet has been set up as a way of involving artists from around the world who cannot make it to Cardiff, using the internet to take the festival out to the network and bringing the network into the festival. Performed in Georgian, English and French. Voix Polyphoniques is a Marseille-based group specialising in polyphonic and acapella singing. This concert is a tribute to Edisher Garakanidse, singer, musicologist and founder of the Georgian group Mtiebi. Brigitte Cirla joined him on many field trips to meet singers and record songs in the different regions of Georgia. The singers exchanged and fused their cultural and musical references and the resulting performance is an exhilarating and moving experience. £12/£10/£8 (from Chapter Box Office)

It’s the last Bad Film Club before a short summer break, and Nicko and Joe are lending their irreverent, rather hilarious, live commentary to another treat from their collection of terrible — in a good way — films. This early 70s beauty centres on Dr Roger Girard, a mad scientist who has a penchant for head transplantation. When a ‘psycho-killer’ breaks into his home, Girard takes decisive action, gunning him down in his tracks. Things take a turn for the hilarious/macabre when he decides that the offenders head would be a perfect addition to the body of his caretaker’s son, and the resulting two-headed monster escapes into the surrounding countryside.

This ‘hard hitting’ biopic takes an appropriately old-fashioned look at the life of Welshman Howard Winstone (Stuart Brennan), who took the World Featherweight championship in 1968. Winstone shot to fame in the 60s with an impressive record (67 fights, 61 wins) and a distinctive handicap — he’d lost three of the fingertips from his right hand in an industrial accident — which forced him to develop a new fighting style. Risen features a cracking supporting cast including Chapter regular Boyd Clack as Winstone’s dignified miner dad, and Grainne Joughin as the wife who comes to hate the life her husband has chosen.

French New Wave La Nouvelle Vague was an explosion of vibrant, innovative and highly selfconscious films spearheaded by critics from film journal ‘Cahiers du cinéma’, their bold, modern writing style translated into film. They found audiences hungry for a new, energetic, political cinema with a different kind of hero and heroine. The wave broke in the late 1950s but continued to ripple onwards and continues to influence filmmakers today. This season of films celebrates two of its figureheads, Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Trauffaut.

Two in the Wave tells the fascinating story of the relationship between Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffaut. Born within 2 years of each other in the early 1930s, their love of movies, their friendship and subsequent break-up embody the story of French cinema. They began writing in the same magazines in the 1950s and loyally supported each other in their early filmmaking exploits. But history and politics separated them in the late 60s as Godard plunged deeper into radical politics. By the time Truffaut died in 1984, the two old friends had not seen or spoken to each other for over 10 years. Utilising rare archival footage, interviews and film excerpts, this insightful documentary takes us back to a prodigious decade that transformed the world of cinema and on to the difficult later years of their relationship.

Truffaut presents a cosy world not so very different from our own, with television pouring out reassuring messages and the only element of menace a bright, gleaming red fire-engine tearing down the road. But this pleasant surface hides deeply inhibited people, in a totalitarian society where technology is worshiped and books are burned. From Kermit’s humble origins in a swamp, to the gang being hired by Orson Welles, this film is an absolute delight. As Kermit makes his way to Hollywood, he assembles a team of like-minded individuals, including Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy and Gonzo.

Memorable eccentrics like John Cleese and Peter Falk join in the fun, but the scenes with Miss Piggy on a motorcycle really steal the show.

Those of you who were here for our 40th Birthday weekend and sampled some of the scrumptious offerings from our barbeque will be delighted to know that it will be back for the Cider & Perry Palooza on Sat 16 July (see p7). Its garnering great praise from our Twitter followers who have described it as ‘amazing’ and said they’d highly recommend it to anyone. If you love a fruity beverage, then you’ll love our Cider & Perry Palooza — a whole three days serving the best local craft cider and perry from around Wales (see p7). We also cater well for cider drinkers the rest of the year, with Aspall Suffolk Cyder and Kingstone Press on draught, alongside a changing guest cider (which, as I write, is Weston Bounds Scrumpy from Herefordshire). Chapter is situated in Canton, behind Cowbridge Road East, between Llandaff Road and Market Road. We are easily accessible from the city centre. Overflow car parking is available after 6pm at Cardiff Community Learning Services adjacent to the car park at Chapter. Alternative nearby car parks are shown above. Number 17, 18 and 33 buses leave every five minutes from the City Centre. From the east on M4: Take exit 29 onto the A48; after 6 miles turn slight left onto A4119/ Mill Lane; then left onto Cardiff Road; continue straight onto B4267/Llandaff Rd; after 300m turn right onto Market Place; take next right onto Market Road; Chapter car park is on the right. From the west on M4: Take exit 33 and follow signs onto A4232; after 6.3 miles exit onto Leckwith Rd, towards the new Cardiff City Stadium; keep straight until turning left onto Cowbridge Road E; Market Rd is on your right; Chapter car park is on the right.
