Welcome to our Cinema miniGuide for June. It’s a lively month, as we host the UK Green Film Festival in partnership with Cardiff’s own city-wide One Planet Festival. Boasting fifteen films that highlight environmental issues, you can look forward to beautiful and thought-provoking documentaries such as Chasing Ice and More than Honey, or indulge in old favourites from the post-apocalyptic future with Mad Max. Cine Phonic, our new music film extravaganza continues with some fantastic documentaries, including The Stone Roses: Made of Stone, by acclaimed director Shane Meadows (This is England) which follows the legendary band as they reform after 16 years with a triumphant gig for 220,000 fans. Over at Bogiez nightclub, Noys R Us takes us back to 1991 with Sonic Youth, Nirvana and a new breed of bands on the cusp of a global breakthrough. There’s lots of new releases too with a smouldering remake of Much Ado About Nothing and the bittersweet Love is All You Need. Looking for a thought-provoking exhibition or performance? Why not take a look at our website, larger guide or turn to page 12 to see what else is happening in Chapter this month.

From L to R: The Great Gatsby, The Gatekeepers
chapter.org
The Great Gatsby Fri 31 May — Thu 20 June Australia/2013/143mins/12A. Dir: Baz Luhrmann. With: Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire.
Luhrmann’s long-awaited adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel is set to be a lavish extravaganza as you’d expect from the director of Moulin Rouge. Midwesterner Nick Carraway is lured into the extravagant world of his neighbour Jay Gatsby but soon sees through the cracks of Gatsby’s nouveau riche existence, where obsession, madness, and tragedy await.
The Gatekeepers Fri 31 May — Thu 6 June Germany/2012/101mins/some subtitles/15. Dir: Dror Moreh. With: Ami Ayalon, Avi Dichter, Avraham Shalom, Carmi Gillon, Yaakov Peri, Yuval Diskin.
This frank and shocking documentary by the Israeli director Moreh features interviews with six surviving former heads of Shin Bet, the Israeli security agency established in 1949 to lead on counter-terrorism and intelligence gathering. For the first time they speak with surprising bluntness about the black and white world of the politics of conflict. It’s not essential to be familiar with the modern history of the Middle East to fully appreciate the magnitude of the insight we’re being given.
Rebellion Fri 31 May — Thu 6 June France/2011/136mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Mathieu Kassovitz. With: Mathieu Kassovitz, Benoit Jauber.
When dissidents in a French Colony take 30 police hostages, the captain of an elite counter-terrorism police unit is sent in to the heart of the rebel base to negotiate a peaceful solution, but against the pressured backdrop of French presidential elections, the stakes are high and all bets are off. Kassovitz (La Haine) makes a powerful comeback in front of and behind the camera with this violent thriller, based on real-life events.
Bad Film Club Supersonic Man Sun 2 June Spain/1979/88mins/PG. Dir: Juan Piquer Simon.
An alien sent to earth to fight crime, Supersonic Man can repel bullets, fight with the strength of a thousand men and turn a gun into a banana. Unfortunately what he can’t do is make an engaging and well-made movie. Come see us save the world, your life may just depend on it! Note: A live commentary runs through this movie.

From top to bottom: Mad Max, Trashed, Big Boys Gone Bananas
Sweden/2011/90mins+10mins/no cert. Dir: Fredrik Gertten.
In 2009, Dole Food Company waged a campaign to prevent a pair of Swedish filmmakers from screening their documentary Bananas! on the evening of its world premiere at the Los Angeles film festival. From the streets of Berlin to the depths of the Amazon, together they are on a planetsaving mission to buy a piece of forest and save the indigenous peoples from the sick, sick West.

+ The Lonely Dodo short film Switzerland/2012/95mins+10mins/no cert. Dir: Markus Imhoof.
This compelling documentary uses state-of the art film-making to illuminate the world’s bee crisis in California, Switzerland, China and Australia. Colony collapse disorder has decimated the population, with scientists still uncertain about the exact nature of the deadly phenomenon and beekeeper Imhoof interviews apiculture players, examining the nature of the calamity and discussing possible solutions.
“When people think of bees they think of honey and stings. Beekeeping is very much like that - there are highs and lows. Aside from global diseases, bees are wild creatures susceptible to the changing climate. Our unusually cold spring has meant that many have died of isolation and starvation, as the cold weather made it difficult for them to access food outside of their clusters.” — Roger Phillips, Gardner for Canton Community Gardens
India/2012/82mins+10mins/subtitles/no cert. Dir: Musa Syeed. With: Mohammed Afzal, Gulzar Ahmed Bhat, Neelofar Hamid.

Kiarostami, (Certified Copy and Ten) travels from his native Iran for this mysteriously beautiful romantic drama filmed entirely in Japan. Revolving around the brief encounter between an elderly professor and a sociology student who moonlights as a high-end escort, she finds her latest client less interested in sex than in cooking her soup and talking. When night eventually gives way to day, a tense standoff with the student’s jealous boyfriend occurs, but as usual in Kiarostami, nothing is quite as it appears on the surface.
“Exquisitely made. An enchanting game of misfired passions and mistaken identities” The Hollywood Reporter
Much Ado About Nothing Fri 21 — Thu 27 June USA/2012/107mins/12A. Dir: Joss Whedon. With: Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, Clark Gregg.
Shakespeare’s classic comedy is given a contemporary spin by director Whedon (Avengers Assemble, Buffy The Vampire Slayer). Shot in black and white in just 12 days in the Director’s own LA mansion, the story of sparring lovers Beatrice and Benedick offers a dark, sexy and occasionally absurd view of the intricate game that is love. As matchmaking schemes are put into play and disguises are donned, loathing and love soon prove to be close cousins.
Thérèse Desqueyroux Fri 28 June — Thu 11 July France/2012/110mins/subtitles/12A. Dir: Claude Miller. With: Audrey Tautou, Gilles Lellouche, Anais Demoustier.
Suffocating in a marriage of convenience, Thérèse is a frustrated young housewife in 1920s provincial France. Watching her best friend begin a passionate affair with a dashing young man, Thérèse yearns to escape to a bohemian life in jazz-age Paris. She discovers that her husband’s heart medicine contains arsenic, and forms a plan of escape. This gloriously conceived costume melodrama is an adaptation of François Mauriac’s classic novel and Tautou brings an intense depiction which conveys all the inflections of hurt and pain, love and sorrow.
“After Amélie, Tautou has found a role that does full justice to her talents” Piers Handling, Toronto International Film Festival

The Act of Killing Clockwise from top left: The Act Of Killing, Come As Yuo Are, The Iceman
Fri 28 June — Thu 4 July Denmark/2013/115mins/15. Dir: Joshua Oppenheimer.
In the 1960s, Anwar Congo was a leader in Indonesia’s pro-regime paramilitary, the Pancasila Youth who, along with his band of dedicated followers, participated in the murder and torture of more than a million alleged Communists, ethnic Chinese and intellectuals. Proud of their deeds and completely unpunished, Anwar and his pals delightedly use actors, construct elaborate sets and even use pyrotechnics to re-enact these murders for this documentary — in any genre they desire. Initially enthusiastic, as the movie violence is played out and reconstructed, Anwar finally begins to feel unease and remorse.
“I have not seen a film as powerful, surreal, and frightening in at least a decade…It is unprecedented in the history of cinema.” Werner Herzog
Come As You Are Fri 28 June — Thu 11 July Belgium/2012/108mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Geoffrey Enthoven. With: Robrecht Vanden Thoren, Gilles De Schryver, Tom Audenaert.

Josef is almost completely blind, petulant prankster Philip is paraplegic and wheelchair bound Lars has a degenerative terminal illness that causes paralysis and occasional fits. Inspired by the experiences of advocate and motivational speaker, Asta Philpot, this joyful film follows what happens when Lars’ prognosis takes a turn for the worse and they decide to sneak away to help him live the remainder of his life to the full.
The Iceman Fri 28 June — Thu 4 July USA/2012/105mins/15. Dir: Ariel Vromen. With: Michael Shannon, Winona Ryder, James Franco, Ray Liotta, Chris Evans, David Schwimmer.
Based on the true story of Richard Kuklinski, a notorious contract killer and associate of East Coast crime families in the late 1950s. Dubbed “the Iceman” for his practice of freezing bodies to confuse the time of death, this brutal thriller reflects the coldblooded efficiency of its murderous subject in every detail. Inhabiting a terrain of pool halls, porn theaters and a blood-spattered slaughterhouse, Richie maintained a normal life with his wife and children until his grisly day-to-day activities took their toll, an effect comparable to that of slow-drip poison.
“The unexpected pleasure of “The Iceman” is the stealth excellence of its ensemble, studded with tasty turns from actors cast against”. Variety
