David Mackintosh: The Curtain Preview • Blaenwelediad: Thu 28 April • 6pm • Iau 28 Ebrill Exhibition • Arddangosfa: Fri 29 April — Sun 19 June Gwe 29 Ebrill — Sul 19 Mehefin David Mackintosh’s disarmingly simple drawings are by turns naïve and macabre; mundane then exciting; graphically simple and yet expressively complex. Rendered in a limited palette of black, red, green and yellow gouache, the tone of his works is both intricate and elusive, their graphic presence sharing much of the language of cartoon or illustration. But there is something about the seemingly straightforward spontaneity of his marks — loaded as they are with salaciousness, humour and pathos — that suggests a further reading or intimates that the composition of the subject is anything but one-dimensional. Recently, the complexity of his drawings’ psychological landscapes has been matched with a formal expansion of the possibility of drawing beyond the limitations of the page. For Chapter, Mackintosh has created a number of new works that continue this development in his practice using animation, music and three-dimensional forms. Biography David Mackintosh was born in Sunderland in 1966; he lives and works in Manchester. Recent solo presentations include Cornerhouse, Manchester (2010) and Spike Island, Bristol (2008) and he has exhibited in group shows at the Tegnebiennale, Norway (2010); Contemporary Art Society, London (2009) and Gallery Praxis Hagen, Berlin (2007). He has work in Collection Berge Madrid; Ernst & Young London and in private collections throughout Europe and America. David Mackintosh is represented by works|projects.

Assembly: Art in the Bar Lloyd Durling Until Sun 8 May • Tan Sul 8 Mai Lloyd Durling’s modestly sized drawings are made from an innumerable amount of strokes that form a surface similar to thin washes of paint. Created using simple drawing tools — mainly felt-tip pen and graphite — the images are both animated and claustrophobic. For his exhibition at Chapter, Lloyd has made a number of monochromatic wood engravings of suspended still lifes. In these striking pieces he uses silhouettes to explore negative space, and give the impression of physical form by working back-to-front, filling in the space directly around the image. He has also produced a series of new felt-tip pen drawings which exploit colour, pattern and texture to great effect. In these drawings, apparent tranquillity is undercut by small pictorial details that suggest potential loss amid a quiet existence. Behind the inviting façade is the reality of how we could live with practically nothing and nothing practical. A limited edition postcard has been produced to coincide with the exhibition and is available from The Shop.

Biography Lloyd Durling was born in Solihull and lives and works in London. He is represented by Mermaid and Monster, Cardiff and Golden, Chicago. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Laughter Staggers On’, Golden, Chicago (2010); ‘Somewhere Better Than This’, Pippy Houldsworth, London; ‘Schadenfreude’, The Royal Academy of Arts Sackler Cafe, London (2006). Assembly: Art in the Bar Annabelle Shelton Fri 13 May — Sun 3 July • Gwe 13 Mai — Sul 3 Gorffennaf Annabelle Shelton draws influence from her social and geographical investigations of space and environment. She uses extensive photographic documentation, as well as memory, to create rich, detailed studies that are then re-presented using layers of watercolour and pencil. Interested in the Japanese art of ‘Ukiyo-e’ (traditionally meaning ‘sad world’), Annabelle takes the more recent translation ‘floating world’ as inspiration for her playful, dreamlike and sometimes surreal landscapes. She takes us on a personal journey, revealing elements of the familiar through her unique use of positive and negative space. Annabelle is exhibiting a number of previous works, alongside a new painting, specially created for Chapter. Biography Born in 1968 in London, Annabelle attended Staffordshire University Stoke on Trent and UCE Birmingham, and is now based in Milton Keynes. She is represented by Rarity Gallery, Greece and Bedford Street Gallery, UK and is a founding member of Market Project, based in the East of England. Recent exhibitions include: ‘John Moores Painting Prize Exhibition’, Walker Gallery, Liverpool, UK (2011); ‘Five’, Aberystywth Art Centre Gallery, UK; ‘Beyond’, Wysing Art Centre, Bourn, Cambridge, UK; ‘Summer Salon’, Rarity Gallery, Mykonos, Greece; ‘Art Beat’, Woburn Estate, Bedfordshire, UK (all 2010). Yvonne Buchheim: Stagefright Thu 12 May • 7pm • Iau 12 Mai Using a unique storytelling style that includes relaxation techniques, video footage and photographs, artist Yvonne Buchheim presents her extraordinary ‘Song Archive Project’ and the story of an epic search for singers. Using her powers of persuasion, she has convinced people from as far and wide as America, Wales, Germany and Iran, to spontaneously sing a song of their own choosing in front of her video camera. The resulting project archive is made up of more than 900 recordings. For one night only, Yvonne — who admits she herself can’t sing a note — will brave the mic to perform, after which she will offer you the chance to get involved. £3 (book early from Chapter box office to avoid disappointment) This event is developed in partnership with Elbow Room

Coffee Shop Debate Tue 3 May • 6.30pm • Maw 3 Mai The Institute of Welsh Affairs returns with another lively, informal debate. Composer/ technologist Ben Challis discusses his recent projects, including the development of a novel, non-contact musical instrument. Ben explores alternative modes of interaction with sound and music for people with specific individual needs. As a performer, he works with these same technologies, exploring their creative and expressive potential within free-improvisation.

Voices of Partition Literature and Partition

Tue 3 May • 7.30pm • Maw 3 Mai The Partition of British India and creation of Pakistan in 1947 led to one of the most traumatic periods in the history of the subcontinent. The literature from this period, often written in regional languages, described acts of unprecedented brutality to moments of compassion and humanity. Part of the Sangat series of events, this evening explores the work of Panjabi poet Amrita Pritam (Ode to Warris Shah) and Urdu short story writer Sadaat Hasan Manto (Toba Tek Singh), and Khushwant Singh’s 1956 novel ‘Train to Pakistan’. The event features contributions from writer Reginald Massey and musician Simon Kholi and is chaired by Tej Purewal, who has recently been researching ‘Gender, Caste and the Practices of Religious Identities’ in Punjab.

Barron Brady Sat 14 May • 8pm • Sad 14 Mai Barron Brady (Ros Brady and Si Barron) are awardwinning songwriters and interpreters of English folk music from West Somerset, performing material ranging from raw, moving laments to songs with huge energy and verve. Voices and harmonies combine deliciously with flutes, guitars, Appalachian dulcimer and harmonium.

If ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ then what is the true reality? Two dancers explore the notion of perception, how each person sees the world through different eyes. Can we ever know what is real and what is not? Jessie Brett (Cardiff) and Carlota Mantecon (Tenerife) have been developing their collaborative relationship with support from Wales Arts International and the Arts Council of Wales. This is a work in progress performance of their new piece ‘Awake in the dream’. Free

Christopher Rees (with band and horns) + John Lewis Fri 13 May • 8pm • Gwe 13 Mai Acclaimed Welsh singer/ songwriter Christopher Rees returns to Chapter to launch his fifth album. Recorded in Texas with The South Austin Horns, ‘Heart on Fire’ draws on his love of vintage Stax recordings, and features a collection of songs that recall beloved Southern Soul songwriters Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham. It might sound like a change of direction for an artist recently seen plucking a banjo and stamping his feet on tour with Steve Earle, Kristin Hersh, The Sadies, The Handsome Family and Chuck Prophet, but MOJO Editor Phil Alexander says Rees has always been “full of simmering soul”. On The Edge Where Does Laughter Come From? by Gwynne Edwards Tue 24 May • 8pm • Maw 24 Mai The latest in Michael Kelligan’s season of script-held plays tells the story of ‘the true voice of the English-speaking valleys’, Gwyn Thomas. A native of the Rhondda, Thomas struggled to establish himself during the 1930s depression, and became a schoolteacher for 20 years before fulfilling his ambitions as a full-time writer and broadcaster. Jâms Thomas takes on the role of the great word-spinner, filling in many of the hilarious details of his life. £4 (on the door)

Torch Theatre Company Flowers from Tunisia by Laurence Allan Wed 25 May • 8pm • Mer 25 Mai There’s nothing like a bit of romance to spice up your holiday — a camel ride through the desert, a Bedouin banquet, a mystery tour through the medina... but when Reah, who is experiencing the early stages of Alzheimers, announces to her son Keith that she is marrying a seventeen year old flower seller from Tunisia, what should they do? A brave play which explores a delicate subject with humour and compassion, this is a timely revival of an acclaimed drama from one of Wales’ finest playwrights. Each of this series of solo works has explored a different chapter in her own dance history and that of the changing environment, both political and cultural, in Hong Kong. Gaining exclusive access to the cave paintings of the Chauvet Pont d’Arc in southern France, Werner Herzog was tasked with documenting the 30,000-year-old drawings and paintings for the symbolic cost of one Euro. And he doesn’t disappoint. Using only a minimum of light and a custom-built hand-held camera, he succeeds not only in filming, but in bringing the images to life with his wonderfully idiosyncratic mix of fascination and humour. Making use of the contours of these ‘moving’ rock paintings as the starting point for a philosophical meditation on the origins of the art of film, he also explores questions of human existence. Werner Herzog also features this month in The Wild Blue Yonder (p32); Encounters at the End of The World (p33) and My Dog Tulip (p34).

With a second, much larger bomb threatening to kill millions, Colter re-lives the incident over and over again, gathering clues each time, until he can solve the mystery of who is responsible and prevent the next attack.

During the 1980s, Alan McGee’s Creation Records were revered by a generation of knowing boys and girls with floppy fringes, who embraced the initial releases by The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream and My Bloody Valentine as the soundtrack for their lives. By the turn of the decade, Creation were releasing indisputable touchstones ‘Screamadelica’ and ‘Loveless’, putting out records as diverse as Teenage Fanclub’s debut ‘Bandwagonesque’ and Sugar’s ‘Copper Blue’, and nurturing such new talents as Ride and Swervedriver. The phenomenal success of Oasis in the mid-90s meant cosying up to New Labour and ruling the Britpop roost. The background to all this is a tale of near-bankruptcy, hard partying, bitter feuds, sell-out accusations, heavy drugs and nervous breakdowns. Danny O’Connor’s passionate documentary gives McGee the chance to tell his side of the story of arguably the last British indie label to really matter.

It’s 1645 and England is torn by civil strife as the Royalists battle the Parliamentary Party for control. Superstition is rife and threatens rational thought across the land and Matthew Hopkins, the Witchfinder General, tours the country instigating witch hunts and extracting confessions through torture. When Hopkins persecutes a priest, he incurs the wrath of his son in law who leaves his military duties to pursue the evil Hopkins and his minion Stearne. Controversial upon release due to the particularly sadistic exhibition of violence, this film has generated a large cult following in the years since its release. + We hope to be joined for the Sunday screening by a representative of the Pagan Society of Cardiff.

This post-apocalyptic horror fantasy stars Vincent Price as scientist Robert Morgan, the one man apparently immune to a virus that has killed 90% of the earth’s population and transformed the survivors into vampire-like creatures. During the day he tours his abandoned hometown, tracking down and destroying the vampires, always making sure to return before nightfall. Hope arrives in the form of an apparently normal young woman, but her agenda is not what it seems… This 1964 classic was remade in 2007 as I am Legend starring Will Smith. The screening features a new soundtrack, performed live by Animat, who use a mixture of their own original brand of dubby downtempo and an eclectic selection of tracks from their DJ archive. The Sheffield-based duo have developed a national reputation for their innovative series of re-scores. www.animat.co.uk

This feature-length dance film portrays the exhilarating and inimitable art of great German choreographer Pina Bausch, who died in the summer of 2009. You’re taken on a sensual, visually stunning journey of discovery right onto the stage of the legendary Tanztheater Wuppertal ensemble. The film also accompanies the dancers beyond the theatre, into the city and the surrounding industrial landscape of Wuppertal — the home and centre of Pina Bausch’s creative life for more than 35 years. Wim Wenders first saw a piece by Bausch — ‘Café Müller’ — in 1985, and was immediately bowled over. They soon developed a longstanding friendship that led eventually to an idea for this stunning joint film project. + see p14 to read about Mui Yuk Chen, a pioneering Hong Kong dancer and choreographer whose latest show comes to Chapter Theatre in June, and includes footage made with Pina Bausch. In the 1990s, Pina Bausch spent time in Hong Kong making a new work about the fascinating city. She met with Mui Cheuk Yin, who subsequently performed her work in Germany at Pina Bausch’s theatre in Wuppertal.

Moscow, in the early 1980s. An unsuspecting French engineer is supplied with secret documents by a KGB colonel codenamed ‘Farewell’. The documents reveal the extent to which the KGB has infiltrated security agencies in the west, and are passed on to the top echelons of the French and US governments. It’s been some time since Cold War spy films have been de rigeur, but the convincing atmosphere of paranoia and tension marks Farewell as a rewardingly old fashioned international thriller rather than any sort of pastiche. Emir Kusturica gives a stand-out performance as ‘Farewell’, in a terrific cast of American, French and East European actors, for once mostly speaking in their own language, bringing an authenticity to the action which is rare in the genre.

How I Ended This Summer Fri 6 — Thu 12 May • Gwe 6 — Iau 12 Mai Russia/2010/124mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Alexei Popogrebsky. With Grigory Dobrygin, Sergei Puskepalis.

In beautifully minimalist fashion, this taut psychological drama is made all the more gripping by the isolation and desolation of the striking polar landscape of its setting. On a deserted, windswept Russian island inside the Arctic Circle, two men spend the summer working at a meteorological station. The gruff polar veteran Sergei barely tolerates the inexperienced Pavel, a feckless graduate on a temporary posting. Then a series of misunderstandings and mishaps cause them to turn against one another. Highly original, and with a unique atmosphere and sense of place, this is a memorable and deeply affecting work. Winner of the Best Film Award London Film Festival 2010

An unsentimental elegy to the American West, Ilisa Barbash’s documentary follows the last modern-day cowboys to lead their flocks of sheep up into Montana’s Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains for summer pasture. It was a journey of almost 300 kilometres through expansive green valleys, by fields of snow, and across hazardous, narrow ridges. The aging shepherds do their very best to keep the hundreds of sheep together in an area teeming with hungry wolves and grizzly bears. This astonishingly beautiful yet unsparing film reveals a world in which nature and culture, animals and humans, vulnerability and violence are all intimately meshed.

As Abdelkader and Messaoud become more and more zealous in their quest for justice, they reunite in Paris, where their paths diverge towards radical politics and violent crime. Rachid Bouchareb’s Oscar-nominated follow up to Days of Glory (Indigènes), has a grand, sweeping feel, not dissimilar to The Godfather or Once Upon a Time in America. Double CL1C

The most fun film at last year’s Cannes was this emotionally uplifting documentary about a group of disabled street musicians from Kinshasa. A hundred years ago the British Antarctic Expedition led by Captain Scott set out on its illfated race to the South Pole. Official photographer and cinematographer Herbert Ponting filmed almost every aspect of the expedition: the scientific work, life in camp and the local wildlife. Most importantly, he recorded the preparations for the assault on the Pole — from the trials of the sledges to clothing and cooking equipment — giving us a real sense of the challenges faced. In 1924 he re-edited the fooatge into this remarkable feature. The BFI National Archive has restored the film and introduced a new score by Simon Fisher Turner. + On Sun 22 May, this film will be accompanied by a very special film from the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales: The Welsh Himalayan Expedition

Using unique, beautiful, and unseen footage, with access to the five astronauts responsible for the Galileo-mission, Herzog has created a spectacular vision of imagery, sound, music and human emotion.

Sydney Wignall set off from Llandudno on a climbing expedition to the Himalayas in 1955. His group was captured and interrogated before being abandoned in an inhospitable Himalayan pass. Sydney also took a film camera with him on the trip, and the resulting footage is a captivating account of the long and rewarding journey.

Green is an orangutan who is a victim of deforestation and resource exploitation. This awardwinning documentary takes you on an emotional journey through her final days. NB: contains scenes that some viewers may find distressing. + Cardiff-based author and wildlife photographer Andy Rouse joins us to talk about his experiences with orang-utans in Borneo plus some of his work with mountain gorillas and Bengal tigers. Andy’s new book ‘Gorillas’ features his trade-mark ‘up-close’ style of photography with some of the worlds most fascinating and potentially dangerous animals.

While filming the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand fell to earth in a helicopter accident. He had no fear of dying but was filled with thoughts of home, and it was this that formed the inspiration for this film. With stunning aerial footage and a voiceover littered with persuasive facts and figures, this is a wonderful depiction of how the Earth’s problems are all interlinked.

This beautifully animated film is a bittersweet account of author J. R. Ackerley’s 16-year relationship with his German shepherd dog. The distinguished man of letters hardly thought of himself as a dog lover until he came to adopt Tulip, who turned out to be the love of his life. In vivid and sometimes startling detail, the film reveals Tulip’s sassy, often erratic behaviour and Ackerley’s fumbling but determined efforts to ensure an existence of perfect happiness for her. Featuring Werner Herzog (The Wild Blue Yonder, Encounters At The End Of The World — see p32/33) in a completely different guise, this is a profound and subtle meditation on the strangeness that lies at the heart of all relationships.

Mae bysus rhif 17, 18 a 33 yn gadael Canol y Ddinas bob pum munud. Chapter is situated in Canton, behind Cowbridge Road East, between Llandaff Road and Market Road. We are easily accessible from the city centre. Overflow car parking is available after 6pm at Cardiff Community Learning Services adjacent to the car park at Chapter. Alternative nearby car parks are shown above. Number 17, 18 and 33 buses leave every five minutes from the City Centre. From the east on M4: Take exit 29 onto the A48; after 6 miles turn slight left onto A4119/ Mill Lane; then left onto Cardiff Road; continue straight onto B4267/Llandaff Rd; after 300m turn right onto Market Place; take next right onto Market Road; Chapter car park is on the right. From the west on M4: Take exit 33 and follow signs onto A4232; after 6.3 miles exit onto Leckwith Rd, towards the new Cardiff City Stadium; keep straight until turning left onto Cowbridge Road E; Market Rd is on your right; Chapter car park is on the right. Access for all
