So what is Chapter all about? Art and audiences, innovation and ideas… but a lot more than that too. We’ve never been easy to describe or put a label on and Chapter means many different things to many different people. We opened our doors in 1971 with a vision to bring performance, film and exhibitions together under one roof united by a dynamic social space. Over forty years later we’re now recognised as one of the most successful multidisciplinary arts venues in Europe. We’re dedicated to developing contemporary culture, nurturing new talent and providing public access to the arts. We also play a central role in positioning Cardiff and Wales in the international cultural arena. Or in other words we’re passionate about the arts and want to spread the word. Chapter is known and loved for the open space we create and the combination of radical new work that coexists with our many diverse users. We have a strong social contract of diversity, openness, empowerment, informality, tolerance and acceptance. We welcome over 750,000 visitors every year and all our spaces are busy seven days a week from 8.30am until late, 362 days of the year and our arts programme is supplemented with a vibrant mix of activity from reading groups to social media surgeries, from mother and toddler groups to dance lessons. We are an independent charity, a company limited by guarantee and one of the largest social enterprises in Wales. Our caffi bar is very much at the heart of our welcoming social space. So on the one hand we’re about new, agenda-setting art in all its forms and on the other we’re a friendly place where people can just sit and chat, feel at home and feel welcome. Chapter is full of people passionate about what we do, whether that’s creating an extraordinary piece of work, making your time here really special or serving the best cappuccino in the city. Enjoy.

The Institute Of Critical Zoologists Fri 27 April — Sun 17 June • Gwe 27 Ebrill — Sul 17 Mehefin Preview: Thu 26 April • 6-8pm • Iau 26 Ebrill The Institute of Critical Zoologists (ICZ) works with artists, scientists and researchers to develop a critical approach to the zoological gaze. Motivated by current ecological concerns, the heart of its practice addresses the human regard for animals as conveyors of meaning with values that are both culturally and politically specific. Taking factional environments as a starting point for quasi-factual scenarios, projects are realised as installations, photographic art works, archive material and expedition reports. The ICZ aims to test the role of art and photography in the dissemination of knowledge and acceptance of truths. We have worked in collaboration with the ICZ to present its first UK retrospective exhibition that interrogates the boundaries between the seen and the unseen, art and artifice, credence and fantasy; exploring methods of allegorical representation and interpretation. ICZ artist Zhao Renhui, has undertaken a residency supported by National Museum Cardiff in March 2012, which has informed part of the research for this exhibition. An installation by the artist is open in the Natural History Galleries at the Museum between Tue 13 March and Sun 17 June 2012. Pauline J Yao writes, Zhao’s work “may be truthful depictions or artful fabrications, but it hardly matters: Zhao succeeds in proving that our assumptions about reality must be rigorously questioned if not, on occasion, fully abandoned”. (Best of 2010, Art Forum) This exhibition is curated by Lauren Jury and Helen Warburton. Biography Under the organisational name of The Institute of Critical Zoologists, Zhao Renhui has shown in a number of international exhibitions and been the subject of extensive writing and commentary. Recent group exhibitions include: The Singapore Art Museum (2012); Langgeng Art Foundation, Indonesia (2011); Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan; Seoul Arts Center, Korea; (both 2010); Photo Levallois, Paris (2008), as well as solo exhibitions at The Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (2012) and The Arts Gallery, London (2011). In 2011 he received the Deustche Bank Award in Photography from University of the Arts London and was awarded the Singapore National Arts Council Young Artist Award in 2010. In 2009, he won a distinguished art prize in Singapore, The United Overseas Bank Painting of the Year Award. Zhao graduated with a Masters (Distinction) in Photography from The London College of Communication under its graduate scholarship program. Art in the Bar Nicholas Dietrich Williams Fri 30 March — Sun 20 May • Gwe 30 Mawrth — Sul 20 Mai Nick Williams applies the knowledge and ideas of Modernism to his work in an attempt to challenge recent statements by some critics that ‘painting is antiModernist’. His works take reference from great painters like Breugel and Matisse, fused with modern popular music culture. The iconic rock star motif is repeated again and again, reflecting the ecstatic highs and devastating lows of life. They are stripped of their instruments, isolated and at odds with the backdrop they are painted against. The figures are drawn free-hand, sourced from internet videos. They become deformed and twisted apparitions after being sketched from a moving image, where elements are kept or deleted at will. Traditional rules are simultaneously maintained and broken: there is light, but no shadow; each area has been resolved and activated as a part geometric, part-ambiguous abstract composition, informed by an intuitive approach. Biography Nick Williams was born in Merseyside in 1981 and now lives and works in Bristol. He studied at Liverpool John Moores Univesity (2000) and Hull School of Art (2003). Selected group exhibitions include: The Manchester Contemporary, Spinningfields, Manchester; Nothing Gold Can Stay, Angelika Studio’s, High Wycombe (both 2011); The Constant Garden, Casa De Brujas, Liverpool Biennial; The Museum Of Accumulation, Casa De Brujas, Liverpool (both 2010); Sale, The Royal Standard, Liverpool (2009). He was selected for the Celeste Art Prize, London in 2007 and is currently represented by Mermaid and Monster, Cardiff. www.nickdietrichwilliams.com

MaiBOCK Thu 10 — Sat 12 May • Iau 10 — Sad 12 Mai It’s that time of year again and our lovely bar manager Dave has been busy sourcing some great beers from Germany for our annual MaiBock beer festival. He’s ordered in over 30 different brews from great historic breweries — dark, blonde or weisse — the choice is yours! This year we have a selection of beers brewed at Andechs Abbey, the burial place of composer Carl Orff. The monks of Andechs have been brewing beer for more than a thousand years and their beer is rated as one of the best in all of Bavaria. With six beers from this brewery alone, there’s bound to be (at least) one to tickle your fancy. To compliment your selection, we’re also serving up some special festival food. Sample a German hot dog with our famous homemade curry ketchup or tuck in to a hearty ploughman’s, with either honey and clove roast ham or Welsh cheddar. Of course, our usual selection of tasty burgers will be on offer and there’ll also be a special fragrant chicken curry, served with rice and a naan bread. In the words of one of our regulars: “On any given day at Chapter, the choice is broad, confusing even. At MaiBock, the choice is bewildering — but if you can’t find something you like, you don’t like beer! All this plus good food, cinema and theatre. Not to mention the choice of single malt…” So dust off you lederhosen and join us for a taste of something a bit different. Prost! Festival hours: Thu 10 May: 5-11pm; Fri 11 May: 5pm-12.30am; Sat 12 May: 1pm-12am.

Bar open: Sat 12pm-12am, Sun 12-10.30pm, Mon-Thu 12-11pm, Fri 12pm-12.30am Free wireless internet is available in Caffi Bar Chapter.

EXPERIMENTICA 2012: UNSEEN — CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS Wed 21 — Sun 25 Nov • Mer 21 — Sul 25 Tach Experimentica is our annual festival of performance and interdisciplinary projects across installation, film, video, sound art, dance and theatre. We are now looking for proposals from artists at all stages in their careers, based in Wales, the UK and internationally, to contribute to the programme in 2012. Experimentica is part of a UK network of festivals and organisations — including The National Review of Live Art, Glasgow; In Between Time, Bristol and the Live Art Development Agency, London — that is dedicated to the development of the live art scene. Over the last 10 years Experimentica has featured performance art from Japan, Canada, China and Mexico, and cutting edge dance from Brazil, Australia and Korea alongside a selection of innovative performance, film, dance, music and installation from Wales and around the UK. Projects have ranged from large scale to intimate and from formal exhibition space and studio to off-site intervention. The Experimentica team work with partner venues, artists and groups to develop an open and collaborative exchange of ideas, projects and knowledge. Experimentica 2012: UNSEEN will profile new work that in the same way reflects the notion of the challenging; experimental; genre defining. UNSEEN is not a theme for the festival, more a point of departure; a catalyst for new ideas; an opportunity to explore the often hidden or ignored; the spaces between and on the edge. To be a part of Experimentica 2012 please download the guidelines from our website or email experimentica@chapter.org and we’ll send you the details. Deadline for submissions: midday on Mon 30 April.

Theatre Replacement Dress Me Up In Your Love Tue 1 + Wed 2 May • 8pm • Maw 1 + Mer 2 Mai Part theatre, part installation, part fashion show, the latest piece in Theatre Replacement’s series of biographical performances takes inspiration from garments from around the world. It’s a generous, open and comic piece, which centres on approximately 40 outfits. As the performers encounter the outfits, and the stories about the people who wore them, they are drawn in by their own personal connections to the material, and the result is both intimate and resonant. Dress Me Up In Your Love has no written script — the words have been shaped through the performers’ care of the stories themselves. Over time, and after telling them repeatedly, the texts have been formed, allowing them to hold on to their immediacy. The show features live music from Vancouver composer, singer and keyboardist Veda Hille. £12/£10/£8 www.theatrereplacement.org

“…some of the most innovative, smarty pants theatre makers in town with a mission “to speak to contemporary existence and investigate the experiences and events that fill our lives.” We all wear clothes. Seren and Literature Wales First Thursday

Everyman Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen

Thu 3 May • 7.30pm • Iau 3 Mai This regular literary event welcomes some of the best writers of their generation to introduce and read from their works. In May, poet, novelist, essayist and environmentalist Robert Minhinnick will be reading from his new book of short stories, ‘The Keys of Babylon’. And Rhian Edwards (who won an unprecedented double in this year’s John Tripp Spoken Poetry Prize) drops by to perform poems from her debut collection, ‘Clueless Dogs’.

Tue 22 — Sat 26 May • 7.30pm • Maw 22 — Sad 26 Mai Everyman Theatre continues its ‘Banned’ season of plays with Ibsen’s classic drama. Following its publication in 1881, the play was described by the director of the Christiania Theatre as ‘one of the filthiest things ever written in Scandinavia’. A decade later the reaction of English critics was just as extreme. The Daily Telegraph said it was ‘an open drain, a loathsome sore unbandaged’. It was the inclusion of syphilis in the main storyline that caused so much critical outrage. The play was not performed again on a public stage in Britain until 1914. The main themes in Ghosts are the hypocrisy of the Church and the subjugation of women. It’s a powerful drama in three acts that unfolds like a detective story as the secrets of family life are slowly revealed.

£2.50 (on the door)

Zane Banks Ingwe by Georges Lentz Sat 5 May • 8.30pm • Sad 5 Mai The outstanding young Australian electric guitarist Zane Banks comes to Chapter as part of the Vale of Glamorgan Festival. Dedicated to celebrating the work of living composers, the festival takes place at venues across Cardiff and the Vale. Australian composer Georges Lentz’s 60-minute solo guitar work Ingwe (an Aboriginal word meaning ‘night’) is a truly extraordinary achievement. Heavy metal meets musical metaphysics, as shrieking amplified sound clashes with the spirituality of indigenous Australian cultures. Conceived as part of an open-ended cycle of compositions, it is at once a nod to guitar heroes such as Jimi Hendrix and a monumental meditation on the human condition, the bleak vastness of the Australian desert and the awe-inspiring radiance of its night skies. + Pre-concert talk with Georges Lentz and Zane Banks at 7.30pm

£10 (£8 Concessions on Tue and Thu)

Parthian Books Forgotten Footprints Wed 30 May • 8pm • Mer 30 Mai Come to the end of the Earth... and discover the men who went there first. Forgotten Footprints is your chance to experience captivating stories of Antarctica alongside beautiful original photography and immersive soundscapes. Hear about the night that lasts for months, the ever-changing Deception Island, and find out who really discovered Antarctica. Shock n Awe Love at First Light Tue 8 – Sat 19 May • 8pm • Maw 8 – Sad 19 Mai (no performance on Sun 13 May) From the award-winning creators of Muscle They say ‘first love’ is the most intense and that the memory of it lasts a lifetime. Perhaps you are still together. Perhaps love withered and died, or sadly they did? Was your love forbidden? Or did they simply have to catch the next plane home? Questions like these revealed a set of astonishing, beautiful, heartbreaking, hilarious and life enhancing true stories which have been forged into an exhilarating collage of drama, dance and music. From World War Two to the very passionately felt present, Love at First Light is a foolhardy rush of naiveté to the head, a danger to the heart and, who knows, perhaps a sigh of some poignant wisdom come morning? Finland/2011/93mins/subtitled/PG. Dir: Aki Kaurismäki. With Andre Wilms, Kati Outinen, Jean-Pierre Darroussin.

It’s 2018 and, unknown to the world, in 1945 a group of scientists from the Nazi fortress of New Swabia in the Antarctic escaped to the dark side of the moon. In complete isolation, in a military base known as the ‘Black Sun’, an Armada of Nazi UFOs is being constructed with the intention of returning to Earth to subjugate the population. Panic arises however when a US space shuttle lands and so sets into action mission ‘meteor Blitzkrieg’ and a party of Nazis head for New York — but secret agent Renate has her own plans. Made with the support of a vast internet community, this fulfils all the criteria for an over-the-top, trashy B-movie-cum-exploitation film full of cheap thrills.

In this warm-hearted portrait of a French harbour city, fate throws young African refugee Idrissa into the path of Marcel Marx, a well-spoken bohemian who works as a shoe-shiner. With innate optimism and the unwavering support of his community, Marcel stands up to the officials who are doggedly pursuing the boy for deportation. A political fairy tale that exists somewhere between the reality of contemporary France and the classic cinema of Jean-Pierre Melville, Le Havre is a charming, deadpan delight, excellently directed by critically acclaimed filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki (The Man Without A Past).

It’s been said (but unsubstantiated) that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were killed in a standoff with the Bolivian military in 1908. In this slightly different interpretation, Cassidy survived, and is quietly living out his years under the name James Blackthorn in a secluded Bolivian village. Tired of his long exile from the US and hoping to see his family again before he dies, Cassidy sets out on the long journey home. But when an unexpected encounter with an ambitious young criminal derails his plans, he is thrust into one last adventure, the likes of which he hasn’t experienced since his glory days with the Sundance Kid.

Llygaid Sgwâr Gan Philip Wyn Jones Llyfr mwyaf poblogaidd y nofelydd Ffrengig, David Foenkinos ydy ‘La Délicatesse’ (Delicacy), 2009. Enillodd y nofel ddeg o wobrau a gwerthwyd dros saith mil o gopïau ohoni. Cyfarwyddwr castio yw ei frawd Stéphane a’i ffilmiau’n cynnwys Criminal Lovers (François Ozon) a Midnight in Paris (Woody Allen). Daeth y ddau frawd ynghyd i ffilmio Delicacy (2011). Lluniwyd y sgript gan David ac ef fu’n gofalu am olwg y ffilm. Cyfarwyddwyd yr actorion gan Stéphane. Mae’r nofel yn un araf a dwys. Bu gŵr a gwraig ifanc yn briod ers rhyw dair blynedd pan gaiff y gŵr ei ladd wrth loncian. Mae ei weddw yn ceisio goresgyn ei phrofedigaeth trwy wneud dim byd ond gweithio yn ei swyddfa a gwrthod cymdeithasu. Yna daw dyn arall i mewn i’w bywyd hi, un sydd heb fod yn ddigon da iddi, ym marn ei chydweithwyr busneslyd. Mae edmygwyr y nofel yn anhapus am fod David Foenkinos wedi cynnwys elfennau o ysgafnder a hiwmor yn y ffilm ac wedi dewis actorion sy’n adlewyrchu hynny. Portreadir y wraig weddw ifanc, Nathalie, gan Audrey Tautou sydd ers 1999 wedi ennill pedwar César, un BAFTA a sawl gwobr arall. Mae ei ffilmiau’n cynnwys Amélie, A Very Long Engagement, Priceless a Coco Before Chanel. Francois Damiens sy’n actio rhan y dyn newydd yn ei bywyd, Markus. Mae Damiens yn adnabyddus ar y Cyfandir fel actor mewn sefyllfaoedd Candid Camera. Mae rhai beirniaid yn dechrau colli amynedd gyda Tautou ac yn ei chyhuddo o chwarae cyfres o rannau sy’n rhy debyg i’w gilydd. Maen nhw, ar y llaw arall, yn canmol gwaith Damiens yn y ffilm hon. Yn wahanol i ddiweddar ŵr Nathalie dyw Markus ddim yn heini a golygus; mae’n afrosgo ac yn swil ac mae perfformiad Damiens yn ei wneud yn gymeriad annwyl. Gyda phawb, ar wahân i fam-gu Nathalie, yn gwrthwynebu’r berthynas mae perygl iddi ddiweddu mewn dagrau. Ym marn un beirniad, mae’r ffilm hon yn amrywiad ar yr hen chwedl am y dywysoges sy’n cusanu broga ond bod y broga y tro hwn yn aros yn froga! Nid dyma ddehongliad y nofelydd. Iddo ef y pwynt ydy y gall cariad orchfygu pob rhwystr. Hon ydy ffilm nodwedd gyntaf y ddau frawd. Mae eu ffilmiau byrion blaenorol yn cynnwys Une Histoire de Pieds, sef golwg ar garwriaeth o safbwynt traed y cariadon! Boed ym Mharis neu allan yng nghefn gwlad mae Delicacy yn ffilm hardd yr olwg ac mae cerddoriaeth swynol i’w chlywed ar ei hyd. Bydd 2012 yn flwyddyn brysur i Audrey Tautou. Claude Miller, un o ddisgyblion François Truffaut, yw cyfarwyddwr Thérèse D. Mae Tautou yn portreadu Thérèse Desqueyroux, gwraig briod sydd wedi diflasu gyda’i fywyd yn y wlad. Ar ôl i’w gŵr lyncu arsenic yn ddamweiniol mae’n achub ar y cyfle i geisio ei lofruddio. Cyfarwyddir L’Écume des Jours/ Froth on the Daydream gan Michel Gondry, Ffrancwr sy’n byw yn Efrog Newydd. Ffilm enwocaf Gondry yw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Yn y ffilm newydd mae Tautou yn cymryd rhan gwraig briod sy’n dioddef o salwch anghyffredin gan fod blodyn yn tyfu yn ei hysgyfaint. Mae’n ymddangos fod Tautou yn ceisio gwrthbrofi’r haeriad nad yw hi am fentro i feysydd gwahanol! Bad Film Club: Planet of Dinosaurs Sun 6 May • Sul 6 Mai USA/1979/84mins/12A. Dir: James K. Shea. With Mary Appleseth, Harvey Shain.

Nicko and Joe supply their irreverent, live, DVDstyle commentary to another monstrous movie travesty. The crew soon discover that the planet is inhabited by bloodthirsty dinosaurs, and so begins an ‘epic’ struggle to survive.

Hunky Dory Fri 4 — Thu 10 May • Gwe 4 — Iau 10 Mai UK/2011/107mins/15. Dir: Marc Evans. With Minnie Driver, Aneurin Barnard, Danielle Branch.

It’s the start of the sweltering summer of 1976 and the end of term is approaching at a secondary school in Swansea. Idealistic drama teacher Vivienne (Minnie Driver) is holding rehearsals for an ambitious musical production. Her take on ‘The Tempest’ incorporates the contemporary songs of her pupils’ pop heroes - a version of the play that ‘both Shakespeare and David Bowie could be proud of’. She faces an uphill battle with her cynical colleagues, who aren’t shy about voicing philistine opinions on the project. And the kids are distracted by the business of being teenagers — arguing with adults, playing in bands, cooling off at the lido, worrying about their post-school futures and falling in and out of love. Back by popular demand, Marc Evans’ latest feature is a sweet and sincere paean to the 1970s. With a refreshing lack of cynicism, its soundtrack celebrates pre-punk pop, and features stirring versions of songs made famous by Bowie, Nick Drake, ELO and The Beach Boys, among others.

Roman Kogler is 19 years old and has lived all his life in institutions. Abandoned by his mother as a young child and raised in an orphanage, he is now serving time in a juvenile detention centre having accidentally killed a boy of his own age in a brawl. A solitary and uncommunicative character, he has no friends, family or connections to turn to in the outside world. But when threatened with a life behind bars, he finds a probation job at a morgue in Vienna. The work is physically and emotionally draining and his co-workers are unwelcoming, but when Roman is one day faced with a dead woman who bears his family name, it occurs to him that this may be the mother who gave him up for adoption and he begins to explore his past. Breathing was awarded the Europa Cinemas award for best European Film in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes and went on to win Best Film at the Sarajevo Film Festival.

Roger Brown has it all — he’s the country’s most successful headhunter, with a beautiful wife and a magnificent house and, to maintain this lifestyle, he’s also a highly paid art thief. At a gallery opening, his wife introduces him to Clas Greve. Not only is he the perfect candidate for one of Roger’s high profile clients, he’s also in possession of one of the most sought after paintings in the world. Seeing his chance to become rich beyond his wildest dreams, Roger starts planning his biggest heist ever but soon he runs into trouble — and this time money is the least of his worries. The first of Jo Nesbø’s best-selling novels to be adapted for the big screen, this deliciously dark and blackly comic thriller is already the most successful Norwegian film of all time.

Sun 6 + Tue 8 May • Sul 6 + Maw 8 Mai

Sun 20 + Tue 22 May • Sul 20 + Maw 22 Mai

France/1945/190mins/subtitled/PG. Dir. Marcel Carné. With Arletty, Jean-Louis Barrault, Pierre Brasseur.

UK/1958/123mins/U. Dir: Roy Baker. With Kenneth More, Ronald Allen, Robert Ayres.

In the Parisian theatre world of the early nineteenth century, the fates of four men — a brilliant mime artist, a great romantic actor, an aristocrat and a ruthless master criminal — are intertwined. All four love and are loved — at least for a time — by the beautiful, free-spirited Garance. Shot during the German Occupation, Les Enfants du Paradis triumphantly overcame the constraints of wartime and is widely considered to be one of the greatest films ever made.

Based on the best-selling book by Walter Lord, this classy rendering of the Titanic story is still viewed by many to be the most accurate screen version of events. From the launch of the ‘unsinkable’ ship to the night it was struck by an iceberg, the stellar cast, led by Kenneth Moore, draw our focus onto the heroism of the human spirit in these extreme circumstances.

La Grand Illusion France/1937/113mins/subtitled/U. Dir: Jean Renoir. With Jean Gabin, Pierre Fresnay, Erich con Stroheim.

Funny, heartrending, erotic, suspenseful, exhilaratingly inventive... Jean Vigo’s only fulllength feature satisfies on so many levels. When Juliette marries and moves in with Seine barge captain Jean, their relationship soon shows signs of strain. Sharing the cramped boat with eccentric bosun Père Jules, a cabin boy and a clutter of cats doesn’t help; nor do Jean’s jealous tendencies or the couple’s reluctance to compromise. Vigo brings an extraordinary array of ideas and insights to the story, while the lustrous lyricism of Boris Kaufman’s camerawork, injections of surrealism and the almost childlike innocence of the performances locate the film in a fertile territory between objective realism and subjective fantasy.

Newly restored for its 75th anniversary, Renoir's classic about WWI prisoners of war is one of the most comprehensively beautiful films ever made about friendship and freedom, respect and responsibility. Dealing not with carnage but with how war re-shapes social interaction, codes of ethics and notions of class and nationality, it is blessed with the most delicate of directorial touches. The profoundly astute insights into human behaviour are couched within a consistently amusing, suspenseful and very moving drama charting the POWs' attempts to escape. The fluid camerawork and typically flexible approach to narrative, mixed with a refusal to deal in simple heroes and villains, make for a masterpiece of immense range, depth, relevance and humanity.

Marley Fri 13 — Thu 19 April • Gwe 13 — Iau 19 Ebrill UK/2011/145mins/15. Dir: Kevin Macdonald.

Bob Marley loved women, football and marijuana and was a staunch supporter of the Rastafarian movement, but his first love was the music, which enabled him to escape a life of grinding poverty in the townships of Kingston. Together with his band ‘The Wailers’ the singer, guitarist and songwriter born to a British officer and a Jamaican woman in 1945 made reggae famous throughout the world. Marley’s family, friends, lovers, fellow musicians and some of his twelve children gave the Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald access to countless documents and information presented here alongside rare archive material. As well as being able to marvel at some incredible footage of the man on stage, we also come to understand Marley as a man of politics, as is evidenced in his love for Africa and the attempt on his life that was made during a concert for peace held in Jamaica.

Goodbye First Love Fri 11 — Thu 17 May • Gwe 11 — Iau 17 Mai France/110mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Mia Hansen-Løve. With Lola Creton, Sebastian Urzendowsky, Magne-Havard Brekke.

Mia Hansen-Løve’s follow-up to the masterful Father of My Children is a poignant semiautobiographical film about an ill-fated teenager. Fifteen-year-old Camille is a serious, intensely focused girl who has fallen in love with cheerful Sullivan, an older boy who reciprocates her feelings, mostly, but wants to be free to explore the world. When he leaves her to travel through South America, she is devastated. But over the next eight years, she develops new interests and a new love — and the possibility that she’ll be less defenseless when Sullivan enters her life again. Hansen-Løve takes the story of a girl’s first romance and makes it into a singular experience, familiar in its broad strokes and yet so specific that it feels uniquely personal.

Buck Fri 18 — Thu 24 May • Gwe 18 — Iau 24 Mai USA/2011/88mins/ctba. Dir: Cindy Meehl. With Buck Brannaman, Robert Redford

Buck Brannaman believes that your horse is a mirror to your soul, and sometimes you may not like what you see. A true American cowboy and sage, this real life horse-whisperer travels America helping horses with people problems. This textured and visually stunning documentary follows Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses, as he eschews the violence of his upbringing and teaches people to communicate through leadership, sensitivity and respect. With interviews from devotees such as Robert Redford and footage of him in action, this is a low key and fondly personal look at a uniquely gifted person.

USA/2011/76mins. Dir: Roko Belic.

USA/2011. Dir: Ian Cheney.

Does money make you happy? Children and family? Your work? Do you live in a world that values and promotes happiness and well-being? Academy Award-nominated director Roko Belic visits the villages of Okinawa, the deserts of Namibia and the bayou of Louisiana, to explore the secrets behind our most valued emotion.

A personal lament for the star-filled night sky experienced growing up in small town America, Ian Cheney’s film is neither sorrowful nor a rant, more of a philosophical insight into what an increasing inability to see the night sky means for our ability to experience the world around us. Exploring what light pollution has done to the Earth’s other species and taking in opinions and ideas from all over the world, this magical film has some stunning astrophotography and won prizes for its musical score.

Filmed in nine countries, the film includes an impressive roster of interviewees including UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon and many leading climate change scientists and sceptics. A no-holds-barred look at the fossil fuel industry which, its detractors say, will stop at nothing to maximise profits.

While researching an article on student prostitution for the French edition of Elle magazine, journalist Anne meets with two seemingly well-adjusted girls who share their stories. Hearing these tales of sexual adventure and misadventure forces the middle-aged writer to examine her own life and family. Writer-director Malgoska Szumowska places female sexuality in all its complexity under a microscope and asks what does it mean to choose to sell your body? Moreover, how should we react when these girls admit that they are not just in it for a roof over their heads, but that they actually enjoy what they do and hope that it will help them climb the social ladder. The deeper she investigates the interplay between money, sex, love, freedom and enforcement, the more she discovers about her own fetters and desires.

Even The Rain Fri 25 — Thu 31 May • Gwe 25 — Iau 31 Mai Spain/2010/103mins/ctba. Dir: Iciar Bollain. With Gael Garcia Bernal, Luis Tosar, Juan Carlos Aduviri.

When an idealistic director arrives in Bolivia to make a revisionist biopic about Christopher Columbus and the conquest of Latin America, events start to spin out of control as the present starts to exhibit painful parallels with the colonial past. Set in February and March of 2000, when real-life protests against the privatisation of water rocked the nation, the film blurs the line between fiction and reality and sets up an intriguing dialogue about Spanish imperialism through incidents taking place some 500 years apart. Even The Rain examines the various personal belief systems of the members of the film crew as the director pushes on with a dogmatic, Herzog-like desire to get his film done despite mounting dangers and questions about his methods.

“a powerful, richly layered indictment of the plight of Latin America’s dispossessed” — Variety

Jeff, Who Lives At Home Fri 25 – Thu 31 May • Gwe 25 – Iau 31 Mai USA/2012/83mins/ctba. Dir: Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass. With Jason Segal, Ed Helms, Susan Sarandon.

Jeff is 30 and living in his mother’s basement. Smoking weed and waiting for signs from the universe to determine his destiny, his patient mother wishes he’d follow a similar path to his conventionally successful brother Pat. However, convinced that his perfect wife is cheating on him, Pat enlists Jeff to help catch her in her betrayal, which leads to a series of unexpected events as the brothers play at private investigation. With a funny dialogue from the Duplass brothers [The Puffy Chair, Cyrus] that feels improvised, the charm of the characters helps to make the small, awkward moments of life resonate with emotional power and maybe restore our faith in the power of destiny.

The Woman In Black

Tales of the Night

Fri 4 — Thu 10 May • Gwe 4 — Iau 10 Mai

Fri 25 — Thu 31 May • Gwe 25 – Iau 31 Mai

UK/2012/95mins/12A. Dir: James Watkins. With Daniel Radcliffe, Ciaran Hinds

France/2011/84mins/U. Dir: Michel Ocelot. With the voices of Julien Béramis, Marine Griset, Michel Elias.

This atmospheric British chiller follows a young lawyer who travels to a remote village to discover the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman who is terrorizing the locals. Full details on p26. NB: Contains intense supernatural threat and horror.

Big Miracle Sat 12 May • Sad 12 Mai UK/USA/2012/107mins/PG. Dir: Ken Kwapis. With Kristen Bell, Drew Barrymore, Ted Danson.

Inspired by real events, Big Miracle follows a news reporter and a Greenpeace volunteer as they attempt to save a family of gray whales trapped in the ice near Barrow, Alaska. The film demonstrates that when people put aside politics and ill will, they can accomplish something they could never manage alone and become unlikely allies.

A Cat In Paris Fri 18 — Thu 24 May • Gwe 18 — Iau 24 Mai France/2010/65mins/PG. Dir: Jean-Loup Felicioli, Alain Gagnal.

This enchanting film from world famous animator Michel Ocelot (Kirikou and the Sorceress) weaves together six exotic fables set in Tibet, medieval Europe, an Aztec kingdom, the African savannah and the Land of the Dead. You’re transported to lands inhabited by dragons, a werewolf, captive princesses, sorcerers and enormous talking bees — each fable ending with its own ironic, dryly comic twist. It’s Ocelot’s sly humour, the gorgeously rendered settings, and the diverse and idiosyncratic stories that makes this suitable for both children and adults.

Carry on screaming! Check out the calendar for details of our special screenings aimed at people with babies under one year old, every Friday at 11.00 am. Carry on Screaming allows parents or carers to see a film at Chapter without having to worry about their baby causing a disturbance. Free entry for babies.

Dino the cat leads a dramatic double life. By day he is the only friend of Zoë, a little girl who hasn't spoken since her father died. At night he leaps from roof to roof with a burglar looking for jewels. It is Zoë's curiosity which leads her to an adventure involving her police officer mum, dastardly criminals and the cityscape of Paris.
