Jonathan Baldock: The Soft Machine Fri 18 Apr — Sun 29 June Curiously irregular and meticulously crafted, Jonathan Baldock’s hybrid forms occupy the gallery space, acting as both costume and object. The Soft Machine, Jonathan’s first solo exhibition in Wales, explores the relationship between the body and sculpture using installation and performance. His work draws unlikely parallels between seemingly disparate cultural references, nodding to literature, art history, pagan ritual, cinema, fashion and the carnivalesque. Transformation is a recurring motif in Jonathan’s work: masks, nests and shells offer a kind of refuge. They are a new skin to inhabit; a place to lie concealed and protected. Oscar Wilde said, “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.” For Jonathan, the mask provides a place where you can be yourself. His swathed costumes act as mobile homes which a performer or person can inhabit. Modest materials become monuments, brought to life through carefully choreographed movement; the inanimate becomes animate and the humorous unsettling. Acting as a kind of safe zone, his sculptures can conjure memories of cosy children’s stories; though simultaneously also reference somewhat monstrous fairground attractions. Interrogating the role of the forgotten or marginalised craftsperson in our culture, Jonathan has developed a visual language where the importance of materials continues to play a significant role in his work, transforming ‘lowly‘ materials into something of status by defying our preconceived expectations about what they can do or be. Jonathan’s work denies specific narrative in favour of conversation: between tradition and craft, movement and stillness, object and body.

Exhibition open: Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 12-6pm; Thursday & Friday 12-8pm; closed Monday

Florence Peake Florence Peake is a London-based artist who has been making work since 1995. With extensive training in dance and a background in painting, Florence Peake’s performance practice uses drawing, painting and sculpture materials combined with found and fabricated objects placed in relationship to the moving body. Site and audience, live and recorded text, wit and humour are key to her work. Recent work includes; MAKE at BALTIC (2013) and Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2012); Duckie Goes To The Gateways commission (2013); REMAKE at Baltic 39 (2012) and the Lanchester Gallery (2012).

Andrew Morris, What’s Left Behind? 2013. 6x7" medium format

06

ART IN THE BAR Andrew Morris: What’s Left Behind? Fri 14 Mar — Sun 18 May The interiors depicted in Andrew Morris’ photographs appear calm and contemplative, in a transitory place — somewhere between occupied and vacant. Reading glasses still perched on the windowsill and bedrooms with beds that seem to have been freshly made — you could easily be mistaken in believing the owner has just popped out. Look a little closer and you’ll find something isn’t quite right. Wallpaper peeling from the walls, a single photograph on an otherwise empty bookshelf; these are homes in the process of being cleared out, homes that once belonged to someone who has passed away. Morris sensitively captures these scenes which are about more than the remaining possessions. He leads us to consider and reflect upon the ideas of home, family and ownership.

Biography Andrew Morris lives and works in Swansea and recently graduated from University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Swansea, where he studied Photography in the Arts. Morris is the first recipient of the Wales International Young Artist Award which was presented to him by the British Council Wales for this body of work. The Wales International Young Artist Award The Wales International Young Artist Award was launched in 2013 by the British Council Wales with the aim of both identifying a new pool of young talent across the creative sectors and also nurturing it by offering young artists from Wales, national and international exposure. The winner receives a £500 prize and the opportunity to exhibit in six continents and over 100 countries. The 2013 judges were Hannah Firth, Chapter; Melissa Hinkin, Artes Mundi and indendent producer/curator Marc Rees.

Kelly Best, Untitled Drawing, 2013, coloured pencil on paper

chapter.org

ART IN THE BAR Kelly Best: Out Lines Fri 23 May — Sun 3 Aug Using photographs of architectural structures as the starting point for her work, Kelly Best strips these back to basic shapes and forms. Parts of the background are painted over and the shape becomes more apparent; buildings become a series of vertical lines intercepted by voids where the canvas or paper has been left untouched, bridges span empty spaces and hang helplessly on the canvas. Best is interested in the irregular spaces that begin to appear during the early construction process of drawing and painting. The simple use of line and colour in her most recent work creates a curious false sense of perspective; shadows appear to drop from the surface of walls, altering your view of the space around you. Out Lines is a new piece of work made in direct response to the space and architecture of Chapter’s Caffi Bar and brings together several ideas that Best has been developing during her recent residency at g39, Cardiff.

Biography Kelly Best was born in Kent in 1984 and completed her BA Fine Art painting degree at Kingston University, London. She now lives and works in Cardiff. Recent exhibitions include ‘Unit(e) Residency’, g39, Cardiff (2014); ‘Y Lle Celf’, National Eisteddfod of Wales, Denbigh, ‘Painting Exhibition’, Studio B, Cardiff (both 2013); ‘John Moores Painting Prize’, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, ‘Cardiff Open 2012’, Cardiff, ‘Door Painting Prize’, Centrespace Gallery, Bristol (all 2012).

These informal sessions are led by Catherine Angle and Phil Owen and do not require any previous knowledge of art theory. We choose texts that we feel resonate with aspects of the artwork on show and encourage you to do the same — whether it’s a piece of writing of your own, or one you have found — all contributions are welcome. £3

Bavarian Maibock beers are traditionally lighter and hoppier than other bock (strong) beers, to reflect and celebrate the transition from winter to spring. We are still compiling our range for this year’s event, but as ever we fully intend to bring some new brews to Chapter, alongside established favourites. This year we will be running the festival bar for an extra day to coincide with Art Car Bootique (25 May, see pages 8-9), so you can enjoy a pint of well-crafted German beer whilst exploring the stalls outside… hopefully in the spring sun! Prost!

good cop bad cop and Chapter present

Lleisiau / Voices Thu 8 — Sat 10 May 7.30pm

The fire and brimstone of revivalist preachers, the recitation of medieval verse and Richard Burton performing Dylan Thomas are familiar to us all as a shorthand for the richness of Welsh vocal traditions. Lleisiau / Voices is a performance project and live internet broadcast that aims to discover and present a collection of lesser celebrated Welsh voices. A call went out across the nation asking for people to share their talents. A search for the diverse and overlooked ways in which people use their voices in their everyday lives. We have spoken to auctioneers, market traders, spoken word poets and newspaper sellers and gathered voices from Bangor, Wrexham, Rhaeadr, Llanelli and Cardiff. At the time of writing the lines are still open and the final line–up is still unknown. What is known is that there will be a specially commissioned performance streamed live from The New York City Players and poetry streamed from New Zealand. The result is a survey of what a few people in a brief period of time managed to gather together to show some of the uses of voice in contemporary Wales. It is an incomplete and incompleteable survey, and one that we intend to continue. Lleisiau is a Dylan Thomas 100 commission by the Arts Council of Wales and the Welsh Government. Thanks to Ffwrnes, Oriel Wrecsam, UndegUn, This Project, Theatr Mwldan, Pontio, Jean Forsythe, Mayor of Bangor. £12/£10/£8

Alice Burrows PA / Theatre Programme Administrator This month there is a great selection in the Theatre programme with comedy, dance, music and theatre. One of the highlights for me will be Lleisiau for the Dylan Thomas celebrations. It was so interesting to see the different types of people and voices at the open days and I am looking forward to seeing how good cop bad cop have drawn them together into a performance. And of course, Art Car Bootique will be a lot of fun!

An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker

chapter.org

An Episode in the Life of an NT LIVE King Lear Iron Picker Fri 25 Apr — Thu 1 May Romania/2013/74mins/12A. Dir: Danis Tanovic. With: Nazif Mujic, Senada Alimanovic, Semsa Mujic.

Live: Thu 1 May. Encores: Sun 11 + Thu 29 May (Schools matinee, Fri 16 May 10am) Dir: Sam Mendes. With: Simon Russell Beale

Nazif salvages metal from old cars and sells it to a scrap-dealer whilst his wife Senada cares for their two small daughters. One day, pregnant Senada feels a sharp pain in her abdomen and whilst at the hospital, she is told there is something wrong with the baby, but with no medical insurance, the hospital’s head refuses to treat her. Tanovic’s Romanian neorealist portrait of stagnant poverty in Bosnia-Herzegovina is striking and unforgettable.

An aged king decides to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, according to which of them is most eloquent in praising him. His favourite, Cordelia, says nothing and Lear’s world descends into chaos.

Exhibition

Based on the acclaimed novel by Mark Haddon, this is the tale of fifteen year old Christopher, and his extraordinary brain. Exceptional at maths while illequipped to interpret everyday life. When he falls under suspicion of killing Mrs Shears’ dog he records each fact about the event in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of the murder. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.

Fri 25 Apr — Thu 1 May UK/2014/105mins/15. Dir: Joanna Hogg. With: Viv Albertine, Tom Hiddleston.

In this rich and complex portrait of an artistic couple preparing to sell their London townhouse, Hogg explores the inner lives of those who appear to have it all. With long-time collaborator Hiddleston and a nuanced performance from former Slits guitarist Viv Albertine, she creates a subtle and unexpectedly touching film.

The Double Fri 18 Apr — Thu 1 May UK/2013/93mins/15. Dir: Richard Ayoade. With: Mia Wasikowska, Jesse Eisenberg, Chris O’Dowd.

In 1792, John Evans, a farmhand from Snowdonia travelled to America to discover whether there was a Welsh-speaking Native American tribe walking the Great Plains. Over two hundred years later, distant relative Gruff Rhys retraces the explorer’s route through the continent by means of an Investigative Concert Tour. A multi-platform project that blurs the boundaries between music, literature and film and investigates what really happened in the heart of the new world. With special preview + Q&A with Gruff Rhys and the crew on Wed 30 Apr.

Separado! Fri 9 — Mon 12 May Wales/2009/84mins/subtitles/12A. Dir: Dylan Goch. With: Gruff Rhys.

Gruff Rhys goes on a quest to find his descendants amongst the wave of Welsh immigrants to Patagonia in the late 1800s. A playful, musical road movie across South America tracing the Welsh community’s movements, whilst searching for 1970s Argentine pop star René Griffiths.

Stockholm in 1982 and fearless 13 year old best friends Bobo and Klara spend their evenings listening to punk on their walkmans despite being told that punk is dead. With restless energy and a desire to prove something to the men at the youth club, they recruit virtuoso Hedvig and start a band. A joyous, noisy blast of vitality from Moodysson about having the courage to be yourself.

Young wannabe musician Jon discovers he’s bitten off more than he can chew when he joins an eccentric pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank. Loosely inspired by writer Jon Ronson’s time in the backing band for masked cult icon Frank Sidebottom, as well as the stories of outsider artists such as The Space Lady and Daniel Johnston, this is a dazzling dark comedy. + Q&A with writer Jon Ronson Fri 9 May

The Punk Singer Fri 30 May — Thu 5 June USA/2013/80mins/15. Dir: Sini Anderson. With: Carrie Brownstein, Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, Kathleen Hana.

Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of the punk band Bikini Kill and dance-punk trio Le Tigre, rose to national attention as the reluctant but never shy voice of the riot grrrl movement. So in 2005, when Hanna stopped shouting, many wondered why.

Bad Film Club

Dungeons and Dragons Sun 4 May USA/2000/107mins/PG. Dir: Courtney Solomon.

The Bad Film Club presents a journey into fantasy with Dungeons and Dragons, the almost universally panned tale of sword and sorcery. With a 3.6 on IMDB and a 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this movie about a maniacal tyrant attempting to overthrow an empress SHOULD have been at least passable but no amount of budget or post production filters could polish this turd. Angry nerds come vent your frustration at the desecration of your childhood on the medium sized screen.

Tue 6 — Thu 8 May UK/2014/90mins/ctba. Dir: Luke Dodd, Michael Whyte.

A beautiful portrait of photographer Jane Bown and her determination to succeed in a male dominated profession. A look at the process of her work, not only of photojournalism at historic events such as Greenham Common but also documenting everyone from Bertrand Russell to Margaret Thatcher.

Rookie member of an elite special-forces team Rama is instructed to hang back during a covert mission involving the extraction of a brutal crime lord from a rundown fifteen-story apartment block. But when cover is blown Rama must stand in for the team’s fallen leader and wind through every floor to complete the mission and escape with his life. With wildly inventive flourishes and epic beatdowns this is a showcase for the brilliant talents of this Welsh director.

The Raid 2 Fri 2 — Thu 8 May Indonesia/2014/148mins/18. Dir: Gareth Evans. With Iko Uwais, Julie Estelle.

Australia/2013/112mins/12A. Dir: John Curran. With: Mia Wasikowska, Adam Driver.

UK/2013/85mins/15. Dir: Steven Knight. With: Tom Hardy, Ruth Wilson.

In 1977 Robyn Davidson went on a 1,700 mile trek across the deserts of West Australia with illtempered camels and a faithful dog, only breaking her sought-after solitude every six weeks to meet National Geographic photographer Rick Smolan in order to fund the journey. Haunting, inspiring and dreamily meditative, this is a visually majestic film of transfixing moods and textures.

A single phone call causes the life of a successful construction manager to unravel during his drive home. With only one onscreen character, this is a bold and riveting minimalist cinematic experiment with a powerfully restrained performance from Tom Hardy.

Jiro has visions of flying beautiful airplanes but, short-sighted and unable to become a pilot, he joins the aircraft division of a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and encounters the beautiful Nahoko. Inspired by Mitsubishi designer Jiro Horikoshi, in Miyazaki’s final film we meet a dreamer trying to realise his visions from fantasy into reality, with parallels to his own animation career.

Starred Up

In an unnamed Balkan country, a farmer and his children mourn his murdered wife. That night, seeing trucks approach his home, the farmer grabs his rifle to fight off the invaders only to see a travelling circus appear out of the devastated landscape. As the ailing ringmaster rests in their farmhouse, the performers sing and practice their acts, bringing something magical to a place of war and death. At times absurd, this is a meditation on life amidst conflict, and an exercise in magical realism.
