Welcome

chapter.org

Welcome to our cinema miniGuide for November. Our Gothic season, Chapter Goes Dark continues (p3-5) with some spine-tingling films and events, beginning with Some Sort of Monster — a celebration of Britain’s favourite gentleman of horror, Peter Cushing (p4). Proving that the most atmospheric films rely little on technical wizardry, we’ll journey to the early days of cinema with a selection of silent horror shorts, which will be accompanied by a live score, composed and performed by pianist Paul Shallcross (p5). We’re indulging in our dark side outside the cinema too, with our annual live arts festival, Experimentica (6 — 10 Nov) which takes an off-kilter look at what it means to be Born Under a Bad Sign, and we’ll take our broomsticks over to the Norwegian Church for ghostly musical thriller, Apparitions of Spirits by Gagglebabble (30 Oct — 1 Nov). If you’d rather not indulge in the gloom of winter, don’t worry, we’ve a packed month of comedies, thrillers and thoughtprovoking documentaries that’ll give you the perfect escape. Plus we’ll be bringing you the best of British theatre with a live screening of Royal Shakespeare Company’s Richard II with non other than David Tennant in the title role on Wed 13 (p7). And for the little ones? We’ve a selection of family friendly films and activities listed on page 12, to keep everybody busy.

GOTHIC: Season of the Witch November’s season of the witch explores the world of the Dark Arts with some wicked reissues of British classic horror films, silent shorts with musical accompaniment, together with an event to mark Peter Cushing’s centenary. For updates on new events here and around Wales, as they are confirmed, please visit: www.chapter. org/chaptergoesdark Opening up a world of film Supported by the BFI Film Audience Network and working with Abertoir Film Festival www.abertoir.co.uk/walesgoesdark www.chapter.org/chaptergoesdark

Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages

The Wicker Man

Sweden/1922/105mins/15. Dir: Benjamin Christensen.

Brought to Summerisle by an anonymous letter to investigate the disappearance of a young girl, Sergeant Howie is surprised to discover that the island’s population suspiciously denies the missing girl’s very existence. Even more shocking, to the pious law officer, the island is ruled by a libertarian society organized around pagan rituals, led by an eccentric but charming English lord. Repelled by the open acceptance of sexuality, he takes an antagonistic attitude towards the people and their leader and his unease intensifies as he continues his investigation. An intelligent and unsettling film, playing on repressed fears of British folklore, the atmosphere builds to a terrifying climax.

Sun 3 Nov

Since its premiere in 1922, this exploration of the role of superstition in medieval minds has caused outrage and protest from both the general public and religious groups. Dramatizing satanic activities and rituals, including the ways in which suspected witches were tortured and killed, Häxan is a deliriously imaginative masterpiece. Bristol’s Bronnt Industries Kapital (led by composer Guy Bartell and previously at Chapter as part of WOW with Turksib) will create a hallucinatory musical landscape, ranging from chilling electrical/concrète passages to ecstatic antique clockwork electronica. £12/£10/£8 bronnt.com

Some Sort of Monster: Peter Cushing Centenary

Peter Cushing and The Strange Case of The Concertina Factor

Celebrating one of our most prolific and well-loved gentlemen of British Horror, we’re pleased to be welcoming author Tony Earnshaw to host this special evening to celebrate the life of a man who was in turns a monster maker, a monster destroyer, but never a monster. Tickets can be bought separately at our regular prices, or at a bargain of £12/£10/£8 for the whole event. Tickets are now also available for our screening of Cushing in Dr Who and the Daleks and Daleks — Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D on Sat 7 December.

Join Tony Earnshaw, author of An Actor and a Rare One — for an evening on Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes, as he lifts the deerstalker on the star’s interpretation of the great detective over more than 25 years on film and TV. Cold, spare and ascetic, Cushing sought to bring purity and truth to Conan Doyle’s creation and fought running battles with everyone, from Hammer to the BBC, as he struggled to put his vision on screen.

Hound of the Baskervilles Sun 17 Nov

UK/1959/87mins/PG. Dir: Terence Fisher. With: Peter Cushing, Andre Morell, Christopher Lee.

Returning to his family’s manor house on the lonely moors after his father dies under mysterious circumstances, Sir Henry Baskerville is confronted with the mystery of the supernatural hound that supposedly takes revenge upon the Baskerville family. The famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson are brought in to investigate.

Approx. 45mins

The Beast Must Die Sun 17 Nov

UK/1974/93mins/15. Dir: Paul Annett. With: Peter Cushing, Charles Gray, Michael Gambon.

A rich businessman and expert hunter summons a group of guests to join him and his wife for a weekend at their country estate. For each guest, dead bodies have followed in their wake and the murders suggest the mark of a werewolf. With the house rigged with cameras and a high-tech security system and a 30 second “Werewolf Break” near the end of the film, both the guests and the audience are invited to consider the evidence and decide who the lycanthrope really is.

Silent Horror Shorts: With live piano accompaniment Sun 24 + Tue 26 Nov

La Légende Du Fantome France/1908/13mins. Dir: Segundo de Chomón.

A journey into the underworld — a psychedelic cacophony of arresting visuals, human lizards, grim reapers, demons and ghosts, all joined together by a demon’s chariot (aka a poorly disguised car) and a narrative that would baffle Einstein. A memorable and barking mad experience.

Frankenstein USA/1910/16mins. Dir: J. Searle Dawley.

Filmed by the Edison Company in 1910, this was the very first example of Mary Shelley’s classic novel ever to be put on film. It features a terrifying creation scene that still astounds today, even though the distributors claimed they were toning down the “repulsive situations” of Shelley’s novel. A fascinating landmark in film history.

Le Spectre Rouge France/1907/9mins. Dir: Segundo de Chomón.

A demonic magician performs a magic show in the depths of Hell itself, however his mistreatment of his female assistants incurs the wrath of a good spirit who starts to interfere. Some ground-breaking special effects are on display here (including miniature women in glass bottles) in this early example of a “trick” film which even predicts the invention of the TV.

The Jest UK/1921/15mins. Dir: Fred Paul.

A fantastic British entry from the ‘Grand Guignol’ series. After his wife leaves him, an old man suffers for 40 years, longing for her to return, until one day his fellow lodgers decide to play a vicious prank… By far the most modern of these films, it offers a narrative that could compete with the very best of today’s stories.

NT Live: Frankenstein

A selection of silent short horror films from the dawn of the 20th century, featuring brand new scores specially commissioned by the Abertoir Horror Festival. Composed and performed by Paul Shallcross.

Chapter Wails: Blood On Satan’s Claw Thu 28 Nov UK/1971/93mins/18. Dir: Piers Haggard. With: Patrick Wymark, Linda Hayden, Barry Andrews.

This powerful folk horror is set in a 17th century England riven with superstition and evil. Led by a beautiful young woman, the village children gradually fall under the spell of a coven of devil worshippers and those remaining must find a way to destroy the beast. Chapter Wails’ Ben Ewart-Dean will introduce the film, together with a music performance with Marc Roberts and gothic folk band Zeuk playing acoustic music inspired by the extraordinary original soundtrack. NT Live: Frankenstein Encore Matinee Screenings Mon 4 Nov + Sun 1 Dec 162mins/15. Dir: Danny Boyle. Writer: Nick Dear. With: Benedict Cumberbatch, Johnny Lee Miller.

Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal. Cumberbatch and Miller alternate the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature in each version. Victor Frankenstein will be played by Cumberbatch on Mon 4 Nov and Miller on Sun 1 Dec. £13/£11/£10

The Selfish Giant

Gloria

Fri 25 Oct — Thu 7 Nov

Fri 1 — Thu 14 Nov

UK/2013/93mins/15. Dir: Clio Barnard. With: Conner Chapman, Sean Thomas, Sean Gilder.

Chile/2012/109mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Sebastian Lelio. With: Paulina Garcia, Sergio Hernandez.

Barnard’s second feature after The Arbor takes us back to West Yorkshire, depicting a fictional contemporary fable about 13 year old Arbor and his best friend Swifty. Outsiders in their own neighbourhood, they meet Kitten, a local scrap dealer — the Selfish Giant. Collecting scrap metal for him using a horse and cart, Swifty has a natural gift with horses and is quickly used as a driver for illegal harness races excluding Arbor from this newly found haven.

Gloria is a 58 year old divorcee who is young at heart. Determined to defy loneliness, she fills her nights looking for love in ballrooms for single adults. This fragile happiness changes the day she meets Rodolfo and begins a whirlwind romance which forces her to face the realities of another long term relationship. A smart character study with an incredible central performance by Paulina Garcia, this is a joyous and perceptive film.

The Bad Film Club are lighting up the dark November nights with some fast paced 80s action. Exterminator 2 tells the story of Vietnam vet John Eastland who was a flame-thrower wielding vigilante from New York. When his dancer-girlfriend is attacked by a ruthless street gang he must take revenge. Are you tough enough? Are you brave enough? Are you strong enough to sit through the entire movie? Like Father Like Son Fri 8 — Thu 14 Nov Japan/2013/120mins/subtitles/ctba. Dir: Hirokazu Koreeda. With: Masaharu Fukuyama, Yoko Maki.

When high flyer Ryota and his wife Midori get an unexpected phone call from the hospital telling them that they were given the wrong baby and their 6 year old son is not theirs, they are forced to make a lifechanging decision to choose between their natural child, raised by a rough yet caring family, or the child they’ve raised in a world dedicated to hard work and social climbing. This is a moving story of a man who suddenly has to decide what is truly valuable in life. + SciSCREEN Tue 12 Nov cardiffsciscreen.blogspot.co.uk

The Fifth Estate Fri 8 — Thu 14 Nov UK/2013/124mins/15. Dir: Bill Condon. With: Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Bruhl.

Triggering our age of explosive news leaks and the trafficking of classified information, Wikileaks forever changed the game. This film follows Julian Assange and his colleague, Daniel Domscheit-Berg’s quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an internet upstart into the 21st century’s most fiercely debated organisation and asks, what are the costs of keeping secrets in a free society — and what are the costs of exposing them?

Approaching 30, Josie is desperate to do something big. Together they drink buckfast and wander the streets, wondering why their friends are becoming old and boring. It’s them against the world, or so Josie hopes. How much can you rely on a friend who doesn’t want to grow up?

Rewind This! Fri 15 Nov USA/2013/94mins/no cert adv 15. Dir: Josh Johnson. With: Frank Henenlotter, Atom Egoyan, Mamoru Oshii, Cassendra Peterson.

Enough Said

Prince Avalanche

Fri 15 — Thu 21 Nov

Fri 15 — Thu 21 Nov

USA/2013/93mins/12A. Dir: Nicole Holofcener. With: James Gandolfini, Julia Louise Dreyfus, Catherine Keener.

USA/2013/94mins/15. Dir: David Gordon Green. With: Paul Rudd, Emile Hirsch.

Eva spends her days enjoying work as a masseuse and dreading her daughter’s impending departure for college when she meets Albert — a sweet, funny and like-minded man also facing an empty nest. As their romance blossoms, Eva befriends Marianne who is perfect, except that she is Albert’s ex-wife. Suddenly, she finds herself doubting her relationship with Albert as she learns the truth about her new beau. Gandolfini’s final starring role, this is a sharp, insightful comedy that humorously explores the mess that often comes with getting involved again.

An odd couple of sorts; Alvin, meditative and stern, and his girlfriend’s brother Lance, dopey and insecure, leave the city behind to spend the summer in solitude, repainting traffic lines down the centre of a country highway ravaged by wildfire. As the two begin their gradual journey across the landscape, swapping stories and butting heads, what unfolds is an unexpectedly humorous yet moving examination of an unlikely friendship that reveals distinct approaches to finding one’s way in life. Adapted from Icelandic film Either Way, Prince Avalanche is driven by strong performances by the two male leads.

Captain Phillips Fri 15 — Thu 21 Nov USA/2013/134mins/12A. Dir: Paul Greengrass. With: Tom Hanks, Catherine Keener, Barkhad Abdi.

Greengrass brings his distinctive lens to the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years. Focussing on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer and the Somali pirate captain, this is a thrilling and complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalisation.

Child’s Pose Sat 16 — Thu 21 Nov Romania/2013/112mins/subtitles/ctba. Dir: Calin Peter Netzer. With: Luminita Gheorghiu, Bogdan Dumitrache.

Cornelia is a member of the well-connected, privileged, bourgeois elite of contemporary Bucharest society. But when her son Barbu hits and kills a young boy in his car one night, we see Cornelia’s ruthless, fierce maternal instinct snap into action in her meticulous dealing with the matter. Constantly met with examples of the blind, corrupting love for her son, even as he repeatedly withdraws from her, she’s gradually revealed as little short of monstrous. A dark and corrosive character study from the continually impressive Romanian New Wave.

“Sharp, multi-layered dialogue and expectedly canny performances.” Variety

The Lebanese Rocket Society Tue 19 Nov Lebanon/2013/95mins/adv PG. Dir: Khalil Joreige, Joana Hajdithomas. With: Manoug Manougian, John Markarian.

A fascinating look at an attempt by maverick scientists to launch a space programme in the early 60s which has been somewhat erased from Lebanese history. The artists interpret this history through incredible archive materials and interviews with those involved, and end their exploration with an uplifting and bold creative action — transporting a life-sized replica of one of the rockets through the centre of Beirut (which ends as a permanent installation in the city).

Fri 22 — Thu 28 Nov USA/2013/111mins/ctba. Dir: Ridley Scott. With: Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz.

When a respected lawyer gets into drug trafficking, he finds himself over his head as an illegal business deal spirals out of control. Interweaving the characteristic wit and dark humour of Pulitzer Prize winning author, Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men) in his screenwriting debut with a nightmarish scenario directed by legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott (Prometheus) and a stellar cast, this promises to be an exciting ride.

Philomena

Filmed around various locations in South Wales, this is the true story of Port Talbot boy Paul Potts, a shy, bullied shop assistant by day and an amateur opera singer by night who became a phenomenon after being chosen for — and ultimately winning — “Britain’s Got Talent”.

Fri 22 Nov — Thu 5 Dec UK/2013/94mins/12A. Dir: Stephen Frears. With: Judi Dench, Steve Coogan.

Based on the book by former BBC correspondent and Downing Street spin doctor, Martin Sixsmith, this engaging and astute film tells the story of Philomena Lee, a former laundry girl in Ireland whose child was forcibly taken by the nuns and adopted into America, and her 50 year quest to reunite with her son. From the Director of The Queen, this charming film has been gaining critical acclaim at film festivals across the world.

Muscle Shoals Fri 1 — Thu 7 Nov

USA/2013/111mins/ctba. Dir: Greg Camalier. With: Keith Richards, Percy Sledge, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Rick Hall.

A small town on the Tennessee River, Muscle Shoals was home to two important studios in American soul and a breeding ground for some of the most creative and defiant music. This is where Aretha found her voice, backed by solid, heavy groove sounds making up the golden age of R&B. Producer Rick Hall, at the epicentre of decades of turmoil, tells the story of the almost mystical belief in the power of a place to imprint itself on the musicians who recorded there.

The Broken Circle Breakdown Fri 1 — Thu 14 Nov

Belgium/2012/112mins/subtitles/15. Dir. Felix Van Groeningen. With: Veerle Baetens, Johan Heldenbergh, Nell Cattrysse.

Elise and Didier strike up a passionate relationship despite their differences, becoming even closer through their bluegrass band. When their daughter becomes ill and the sadness takes its toll, they respond in different ways and their relationship is threatened. A cinematic ballad of love, with a fantastic interwoven soundtrack and finely tuned performances.

“The Broken Circle Breakdown is the cinematic equivalent of a great album that gets played at a funeral. Ultimately it’s a celebration; but the heart-breaking melancholy of love and life lost bleeds out of every note.” Blake Howard, That Movie Show Like the sound of these Cine Phonic films? Machete Kills Fri 22 — Thu 28 Nov USA/2013/107mins/15. Dir: Robert Rodriguez. With: Danny Trejo, Charlie Sheen, Michelle Rodriguez, Amber Heard.

Mexican gun-for-hire Machete is back, recruited by the US government to battle his way through triggerhappy despots to stop an arms dealer who wants to launch a weapon into space. More splattering Grindhouse fun, with an impressive succession of cameos from Hollywood’s outlaws.

Blue is the Warmest Colour Fri 29 Nov — Thu 5 Dec France/2013/180mins/18. Dir: Abdellatif Kechiche. With: Adèle Exarchopoulos, Léa Seydoux, Jérémie Laheurte.

A delicate and beautiful tale of a young woman going through a period of agonising and exquisite selfdiscovery as she climbs into adulthood and experiences first love. Adèle spots Emma through the crowd as a kind of sexual apparition, and this brief romantic spark burns brightly. Their world feels entirely authentic and touchingly universal, capturing the two teenagers in all their muddled complexity and raw sexuality. Fri 29 Nov — Thu 5 Dec USA/2013/136mins/15. Dir: Sophie Fiennes. With: Slavoj Zizek.

Cultural theorist superstar Slavoj Žižek re-teams with director Sophie Fiennes (The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema) for another wildly entertaining romp through the crossroads of cinema and philosophy. With infectious zeal and a voracious appetite for popular culture, Žižek literally goes inside some truly epochal movies, all the better to explore and expose how they reinforce prevailing ideologies. Titanic, Kinder Eggs, verité news footage, Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” and propaganda epics from Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia all inform Žižek’s stimulating, provocative and often hilarious psychoanalytic-cinematic rant.

Drinking Buddies Fri 29 Nov — Thu 5 Dec USA/2013/90mins/ctba. Dir: Joe Swanberg. With: Anna Kendrick, Jake M Johnson, Jason Sudeikis, Olivia Wilde.

Luke and Kate are co-workers at a Chicago brewery where they spend their days drinking and flirting. They’re perfect for each other, except that they’re both in relationships. Luke is in the midst of marriage talks with his girlfriend of six years. Kate is playing it cool with her music producer boyfriend Chris. But you know what makes the line between ‘friends’ and ‘more than friends’ really blurry? Beer.
