Builders, blogs and all things bright and beautiful Thanks to all of you who joined us for our Community Garden Gathering in October. The sun shone and we shared Chapter honey, parsley pesto, chocolate and beetroot brownies and the last of the runner beans, yellow courgettes and green plum tomatoes were all up for grabs. Using funding from Biffaward and The People’s Millions (part of the Big Lottery Fund) we’re about to start work on landscaping our frontage so that we can really crack on with planting for next year’s crop. The building work will continue through November and the early part of December so will be finished (weather permitting) in plenty of time for the spring. Thanks to all the Canton Community Gardeners who’ve put in enormous amounts of free time to get the garden up and running, organise the many events throughout the year and look after the Chapter bees. We’ll be continuing free honey tastings throughout November usually from 4.30pm on Wednesdays when Mark’s Bread set up their regular weekly stall. Mark’s bread, Chapter honey… what’s not to love? Talking about love — we love blogs. If you do too, you can vote in The People’s Choice category and see who wins here on Thursday 27 October as part of the annual Wales Blog Awards. We’ll also be live streaming the event so that you can watch on your desktop, laptop or in the theatre foyer.

The WITH Collective Resident Fri 30 Sept — Sun 6 Nov • Gwe 30 Medi — Sul 6 Tach Resident is a witty and engaging rumination on the role of the artist in a rapidly changing and blurred cultural landscape. For their exhibition, The WITH Collective have moved a large section of our caffi bar into the gallery and have installed a paying turnstile into another section of the exhibition so that visitors must choose whether to pay to see the remainder of the show and to receive an unlimited edition WITH artwork. These jarring and provocative interventions have created a site for a series of unfolding (yet invisible) performances where WITH are engineering a number of delegated actions on behalf of visitors to the exhibition. As well as posing timely questions about the ongoing sustainability of the arts sector, Resident explores the nature of participation, memory and responsibility through a series of multilayered new works. Since its inception in 2002, The WITH Collective has received critical praise in the UK and beyond, largely through the creation of a diverse range of concepts that are for sale at their website, including: Knowthing™ where a commissioner can have their ‘me-time’ delegated to a member of the collective and Mymory™ where a client can have a memory recovered (or lost) on their behalf. These concepts or ‘solutions’ are the primary manifestation of the artwork; the theme that links all of the ideas together is that a client can have an experience either invented or lived out on their behalf by a member of the collective. WITH are hosting a talk on Thursday 3 November with Professor Christopher French, Head of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit at Goldsmiths, University of London, about ‘False Memory’, as part of a new collaborative body of research commissioned by the Wellcome Trust. www.withyou.co.uk

Assembly: Art in the Bar Bermingham and Robinson When Worlds Collide Mon 31 October — Sun 4 December • Llun 31 Hydref — Sul 4 Rhagfyr Robert Bermingham and Richard Robinson have worked together for the past six years. Their practice plunders the worlds of advertising, comic book graphics, computer gaming and corporate culture to question the belief that as the world becomes more modern so it will become more reasonable and enlightened. For their new series of work, they explore this misconception through the familiar visual language of the vintage film poster — but there is something unsettling about them — something at odds with their bright, bold cinematic message. Bermingham and Robinson have meticulously removed the original illustrations, bringing the graphic boldness of their titles and sub-headings to the foreground: WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE; THE CREATURE WALKS AMONG US; THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE and THE FUTURE IS CANCELLED! By doing this, they create an ambiguity that is closely associated with current paranoia — both at home and abroad — as the posters appear to mimic a tabloid style in both their layout and message. Biography Robert Bermingham (b.1971,Brighton) and Richard Robinson (b.1972, Orpington) have worked as solo artists and collaboratively since 2005. When Worlds Collide was originally shown at Oriel Mwldan, Cardigan (2011) and recent group exhibitions include: We Have The Mirrors, We Have The Plans, Oriel Mostyn, Llandudno; Re:Animate, Oriel Davies, Newtown (2010); En Residencia, Laboral, Asturias, Spain; Auxesis, tactile BOSCH, Cardiff (2009); National Eisteddfod, Cardiff; Welsh Artist of the Year, Cardiff (2008).

ÜBERSONG: A night of experimental song, art and performance Wed 23 Nov • 8–11.30pm • Mer 23 Tach ÜBERSONG is a one-night event that invites you on stage to sing your very favorite song. Live performance, video screenings, DJ sets, happenings and open mic sessions converge in this entertaining and engaging event. ÜBERGOOD or ÜBERBAD — all are welcome, all can join in. Following the hugely popular Stagefright event in November, and based on Yvonne Buchheim’s epic search for amateur singers through her Song Archive project, this eclectic evening also features her hot tips on overcoming stage fright plus the launch of a new publication. Paloma Varga Weisz Thu 24 Nov — Sun 8 Jan • Iau 24 Tach — Sul 8 Ion Paloma Varga Weisz’s sculptures and works on paper skirt the issues of history and influence, melting and mixing sources, periods and figments into an indistinct pool of images. In taming what she calls “the rapid pictures that arise in one’s head,” Varga Weisz tends to the metamorphosis of the images that move from mind to hand, from watercolour to wood, producing hybrids that recall at once history, folklore, contemporary media and works of art. As Guido de Werd noted in his catalogue to her exhibition at the Kurhaus Kleve, the charmingly surreal figures that populate her work seem “like pictures belonging to an unknown fairytale”. In this manner, Varga Weisz sculpts an uncharted terrain, tracing the border of the familiar and the remarkable. Trained as a woodcarver, in her sculptures and drawings Varga Weisz creates timeless works that — by means of a fusion of influences from Gothic Madonnas to the Teletubbies — encapsulate simultaneously states of adult knowingness and childhood innocence, personal reference and collective memory. The determination and tenacity with which she works is urgently felt throughout. Biography Paloma Varga Weisz, born in 1966, was raised in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, Germany. She lives and works in Düsseldorf. She has had solo exhibitions at, amongst others, Sommer Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv (2009); Gladstone Gallery, New York; Konrad Fischer Galerie, Berlin (2008) and Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2006). She was recently included in the Folkestone Triennial, Folkestone (2011) and has forthcoming exhibitions at Sadie Coles HQ, London and Museum Schloss Morsbroich, Leverkusen (both 2012)

PME-ART: Hospitality 3: Individualism was a Mistake

As you enter the theatre you are asked to write down answers to a series of provocative questions. The performers play records, tell stories, play music (placing themselves in an awkward relationship to the instruments and each other), demonstrating the intricate balance that lies at the heart of any true collaboration. With a strong focus on artistic collaboration, Canadian group PME-ART combine performance, installation and research to look at social and political aspects of the world around us. Hospitality 3 is part of an ongoing project, begun at Studio 303 in Montreal, which explores how friends and strangers alike might share a common space, creating encounters that are hospitable, critical, surprising and productive.The remarkable openness of the structure means that every show is uncannily different yet also loosely the same. In a broader sense, Hospitality 3 asks if our culture’s over-emphasis on individualism prevents us from working effectively together for political change. Sat 29 Oct • 7.30pm • Sad 29 Hyd Dream Hunter is a new chamber opera composed by Nicola LeFanu to a libretto by renowned poet and storyteller John Fuller. The piece is performed by the internationally renowned Lontano Ensemble with conductor Odaline de la Martinez, and directed by Carmen Jacobi of WNO. Set in Corsica, the opera explores the ambiguity surrounding the mazzere — women gifted with the prescience of death. The story centres on Catarina and her growing awareness of her powers, and looks at the collision of the real world and the world of dreams, where fantasy knows no bounds.

Dave Stapleton Thu 3 Nov • 8pm • Iau 3 Tach Dave Stapleton’s latest album ‘Catching Sunlight’ is filled with gorgeous melodies, drenched in lush harmonies and driven by subtle, shifting, exotic rhythms. Commissioned by the Lunar Saxophone Quartet, who join Stapleton for this special concert, it has been described as ‘simply brilliant, both in execution and conception’, with a sound half-way between Gil Evans / Miles Davis and Arve Henriksen. The band features Neil Yates, one of the purest trumpet players in British jazz, alongside Stapleton’s regular rhythm section of Paula Gardiner and Elliot Bennett. £12/£10/£8 www.editionrecords.com

This performance brings together the talents of director, designer and puppeteer Purvin and poet/performer Mazhar Tirmazi in an entertaining, moving and illuminating show. The Fetch’s highly visual style of theatre incorporates masks, puppetry and music and goes a long way to dispelling the myth that “puppetry is for kids” by producing work that engages with all ages. Torch Theatre Company Accidental Death of An Anarchist by Dario Fo

Sat 5 Nov • 8pm • Sad 5 Tach Did he fall or was he pushed? An investigative farce with live music and breadsticks Responding to real events in Italy in the late 1960s and early 1970s, this hugely popular farce involves an anarchist who, whilst being held in police custody, fell — or was thrown — from the fourth floor window of a Milan police station. Comic, farcical and occasionally verging on slapstick, the play gains momentum as Fo’s snappy dialogue explodes like gunfire to reveal a masterly plot in an attempt to ridicule the police and expose a cover up. Although the play is set in Italy, the events are pertinent to Britain today. The ‘only doing my job’ policeman, the secrecy and cover-ups and the power of strengthening central state are problems we are all familiar with. Taylor Tue 15 — Sat 19 Nov • 7.30pm • Maw 15 — Sad 19 Tach Perhaps the most intelligent play ever written about the Third Reich, Good makes you question yourself: if I were there, would I have reacted any differently? Would I have made a stand, or merely kept my head down? Am I keeping my head down now? The play tells the story of John Halder, a liberal academic whose best friend is Jewish. He slowly, by degrees, through a series of small petty lies to himself, finds himself at the gates of Auschwitz, in full SS regalia, in charge. Tue 1 Nov • 6.30pm • Maw 1 Tach The latest informal debate from the Institute of Welsh Affairs looks at how the Welsh and UK Governments are using community wellbeing to guide public policy, which sounds in sharp contrast to the scenes of destruction played out on the news this summer. They are researching the contentious and sensitive area of the ‘cancer gene’ and are specifically interested in the growing trend of women choosing to surgically remove healthy breasts and other organs. The latest of Michael Kelligan’s script-held performances, Orange was first presented by Script Cymru in 2006. With Sule Rimi, Alan Humphreys and Dean Rehman. Directed by Michael Kelligan.

Fri 2 + Sat 3 Dec • 8pm • Gwe 2 + Sad 3 Rhag A new restaging of Diamond Age’s 1981 show performed by Janek Alexander (previous Chapter Director), theatre, choreographic and performance artist Eddie Ladd and guest jazz saxophonist Dave Perry (previously seen with Gerald Tyler and Bristol based group, Limbo). This evening of virtuosic singing, arrangements and playing is scored around Alexander’s tuneful pop songs about politics, society and happiness. From recordings made at the time of the Falklands War, these are songs “from the old country”, a visceral and ironic look at the state of the nation in a show that innovatively updated the cabaret format for the 1980s. A welcome return of Diamond Age and special guests to Chapter.

Thu 24 — Sat 26 Nov • 8pm • Iau 24 — Sad 26 Tach This site specific combination of dance, drawing, animation and printmaking investigates how the simple use of mark-making can affect the way movement can be created, and how dance, in turn, can affect the impulse to draw. Marega Palser combines her training in dance and fine art to provide this performing exhibition of her work in collaboration with three of Wales’ finest movement artists. Catherine Bennett trained with Rambert and worked with Random and Siobhan Davies; Belinda Neave trained at The Place and worked extensively with Moving Being and as a solo artist; and Rosalind Brooks has toured with Earthfall for the last three years and continues to teach with the company. The dancers and choreographer use their individual styles and experience to provide a subtle and intimate take on the art work and the exhibition space. Marega Palser is one half of Mr and Mrs Clark and an associate artist of Volcano Theatre Company. She trained at the London School of Contemporary Dance and studied Fine Art at UWIC. Sometimes We Look is supported by Volcano Theatre Company and Arts Council Wales. £10/£8/£6

In 1965, three young Mossad agents were assigned a secret mission to capture and kill a notorious Nazi war criminal. It’s something they imagine has been left in the past, but when one of the agent’s daughters writes a book about the famous exploit thirty years later, cracks start to appear in the trio’s version of events. At the same time, a man in Ukraine claims to be the target of their original mission, still alive and ready to talk. Though no longer together, the three agents are compelled to complete the mission. Directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love), The Debt is a very satisfying thriller that moves back and forth in time with a subtlety and believability that makes it feel like it’s based on a true story.

Being keen on theatre, art and music I approached Chapter and started working under the YTS. My duties were mostly based in the publicity dept where I developed a keen interest in ‘Letraset’ and became pretty good at intricate, three-dimensional poster displays. Favourite thing about working at Chapter? The wonderful people. No two days are the same. Best memories at Chapter? Many over the years...from the danger of performing in a show ‘Over The Wall’, devised by Trevor Turton in the 80s to recently adorning a bee suit and opening the hive of the Chapter bees. Favourite Chapter event? So much choice, however, the launch of my book of Poetry/Stories/ Lyrics, Listen on my 40th birthday (It’s on sale in the shop!). What do you get up to outside of Chapter? I seek and listen to beautiful music. I make music. I enjoy vegetarian cooking. I collect found objects. I love a good rummage in a charity shop. I like to read. This delicate teen romance charts the first love between Enoch and Annabelle, a couple of likeminded outsiders who first meet at a funeral in their native Portland. Talk Film: A Celebration of Europa Cinema It’s been 20 years since the Europa Cinema network began between over 1,000 cinemas in 60 countries. The Cardiff cinema experience has been enriched by the inclusion of Chapter in their network. Led by Claire Vaughan, this course celebrates just a little of their influence by screening a selection of four films taking in themes of what it means to be European in a post-9/11 world. The films will be screened on Sundays and the Tuesday matinee, with a discussion on the Tuesday night. Course fees are £45/£35 which includes a ticket to either screening. This autobiographical coming of age story by Franco-Iranian artist Marjane Satrapi was adapted elegantly from her graphic novel. A stark and beautifully designed animation, it’s as authentic and moving as it is funny. Satrapi draws on her experiences during turbulent times in 1970s Iran and her subsequent flight from a country that is becoming increasingly repressive. The film peppers a strikingly universal narrative of an imaginative little girl growing up with humour but without losing any of the seriousness of the task of trying to remain a free woman in Iran.

This edgy film explores the dilemma of how they retain their Turkish roots alongside the pressures of fitting in to German society. When Head On was released in 2004 it won plaudits across the world for its fearless exploration of the plight of immigrants in a modern society and its dynamic filmmaking and brave acting choices.

As lead singer with Felt, Lawrence was responsible for some of the most precious music of the 1980s developing a cult status with albums on indie labels like Creation. Moving on to form Denim and Go Kart Mozart, there’s been an air of tragi-comedy about Lawrence’s career. Paul Kelly’s intimate portrait, follows Lawrence between Go Kart Mozart albums, weighed down by the chips on his shoulders while still dreaming of being a pop star who rides in limousines and dates supermodels. Genesis P-Orridge has been one of the most innovative figures in music and fine art for the last 30 years. A link between the pre and post-punk eras, he founded COUM Transmissions, Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV, all of which merged performance art with rock music. In 2000, he began a series of surgeries in order to more closely resemble his love, and artistic partner, Lady Jaye, who died in 2007. It was the ultimate act of devotion, and his most ambitious and subversive performance to date.

A rare opportunity to see this wonderful archive film which inspired Owen Sheers to write Resistance. “Two months after the Nazis’ massacre of over 170 men in a Czech mining village Humphrey Jennings gained the co-operation of the South Wales Miners’ Federation and local pitmen to stage a bold re-enactment of the events in Cwmgiedd, South Wales. Suggesting that the slaying could have happened in any similar village, Welsh locals reveal their actual names when forced by occupying Nazis to register at the village hall. There’s a civilised reticence about Jennings’ treatment and skillful montage builds tension isolating objects and telling details. There are no glib, articulate spokesmen here and Jennings, using light and shadow well, suggests a stunned community awaiting the decisive blow. The scene where the miners defiantly sing Land Of My Fathers at the climax can be expected to release audience emotions hitherto restrained by Jennings’ commendable rigour and sensitivity” An edited extract from an article by Welsh film historian Dave Berry.

We can’t do anything about our inclement Welsh weather but we can reap the benefits. I love this time of year, where you can eat all the comfort food you want and not feel too guilty as it’s freezing outside! In the café we’ll be bringing back our orchard pie — a delicious mix of chicken, gammon, apples and cider; and for you veggies there’s a scrummy ratatouille pie — mushrooms, onions, peppers and spinach in a rich homemade tomato and basil sauce. During the autumn we’ll also be warming you up with some lovely homemade stews such as Welsh beef, mushroom and stout or chunky winter vegetable and bean. We’ve eschewed the traditional patio heaters and instead opted for the much more environmentally friendly option of freely available blankets. Just head over to the smoking area, grab one from the large crate and wrap yourself up. Snug as a bug in a rug! If you’re still not as toasty as you’d like to be, you might like to treat yourself to a warming wee dram of one of the single malts we have on offer. Chapter is situated in Canton, behind Cowbridge Road East, between Llandaff Road and Market Road. We are easily accessible from the city centre. Overflow car parking is available after 6pm at Cardiff Community Learning Services adjacent to the car park at Chapter. Alternative nearby car parks are shown above. Number 17, 18 and 33 buses leave every five minutes from the City Centre. From the east on M4: Take exit 29 onto the A48; after 6 miles turn slight left onto A4119/ Mill Lane; then left onto Cardiff Road; continue straight onto B4267/Llandaff Rd; after 300m turn right onto Market Place; take next right onto Market Road; Chapter car park is on the right. From the west on M4: Take exit 33 and follow signs onto A4232; after 6.3 miles exit onto Leckwith Rd, towards the new Cardiff City Stadium; keep straight until turning left onto Cowbridge Road E; Market Rd is on your right; Chapter car park is on the right.
