Welcome

It’s Experimentica time (p6-7)! Not familiar with our live arts festival? If you visit Chapter during the first week of November, you soon will be. Featuring a programme of experimental and playful performance pieces by artists from around the world, Experimentica often spills out from the gallery and theatre into the caffi, the cinema and other spaces around the building, injecting fun and just the right amount of bonkers… Later this month we’ll be tapping our toes and enjoying some cutting edge dance, courtesy of the very first Cardiff Dance Festival (p14-16), for which we’re a proud host venue. And over in our cinema, we continue to be swept off our feet by the Love (p29-31) season. Whilst we love a trip to the cinema, we’re upping the romance stakes by taking some gorgeous love stories and screening them at castles (of course we are!) So why not wrap up warm and join us at Caerphilly Castle (p29) to watch a film with a steaming hot chocolate. What could be better on a dark November night? Thanks for reading and see you soon.

GEORGE BARBER: AKULA DREAM Until Sun 10 Jan 2016 George Barber rose to prominence in the 1980s as a pioneer of the Scratch Video movement. Since then, Barber has developed a large and varied body of work, incorporating found footage, performative monologues and narrative films. We are delighted to present an ambitious solo exhibition entitled ‘Akula Dream’ which will premiere a new work of the same name, alongside presentations of significant recent works including Fences Make Senses (2014), The Freestone Drone (2013) and The Very, Very End (2014).

George Barber, Beyond Language Selected Video Works 1983 — 2008

Home Taping

To coincide with our exhibition of recent and new works by George Barber, we are delighted to present this LUX programme of films produced by the artist between 1983 and 2008. Amongst others, the screening features many of Barber’s most celebrated works including Absence of Satan (1985), Yes Frank No Smoke (1985), 1001 Colours Andy Never Thought Of (1989), Schweppes Ad (1993), I Was Once Involved In A Shit Show (2003), Walking Off Court (2003), Automotive Action Painting (2007) and Following Your Heart Can Lead to Wonderful Things (2008).

Sat 7 Nov 12pm In the early 1980s, the mainstream media was treated like a giant library to be plundered for provocative play and subversion. Whether by filming their television screens with a Super 8 camera or deftly copying tape-to-tape, artists appropriated and spliced together disparate material to disrupt the dominant ideologies of the age and produce new visual music. The programme features notable examples from the highly influential Scratch Video movement, including the seminal works Tilt and Branson by George Barber, plus films by the Duvet Brothers and Gorilla Tapes. ‘Home Taping’ is one of seven curated film programmes from the major new touring project THIS IS NOW: FILM AND VIDEO AFTER PUNK. Presented by LUX in partnership with the BFI National Archive, the series looks at artists’ film and video from the postpunk era (1978–85) when inexpensive, domestic technology gave rise to new modes of expression and a strident DIY approach. More information is available at www.lux.org.uk Total running time: 75 min The screening will be introduced by George Barber and will be followed by a conversation between Barber and Rik Lander (Duvet Brothers). ART IN THE BAR

Magda Archer #givemeeverythingandnothingbaby Magda Archer’s #givemeeverythingandnothingbaby exhibition is an assault upon the peepers in our public spaces via saccharine-soaked, candy coloured scenarios, statements and speech-bubble philosophy that draws upon vintage packaging, greeting card design, retro graphics and a lemonsharp sweetness that belies the bitter truth beneath. Emblazoning the walls of our Caffi Bar Magda Archer showers the viewer with rainbow shards as she explores junk emotions and online validation. “In my show #givemeeverythingandnothingbaby, the internet is the modern day funfair: exciting, attractive, fast and flashy, but disappointing and upsetting too. Your heart can be broken in the time it takes to ride the dodgems. Your self-esteem can be shattered with a stray Facebook comment from a ‘friend’. Your ego smashed to smithereens when someone tags you into an unflattering photo… you don’t REALLY look like that — do you?

Don’t tell me, cos #ireallydontwannaknow. These emotions can lead to a sense of despondency, upset or heartbreak. We can empty our pockets out trying to win something we never really wanted in the first place. We vow never to go back and know in our hearts that ‘this shit will bring you down’. But you do go back, the lights are bright, the music’s loud and enticing, everyone else is there. You recognise a friend of a friend and now they’re you’re friend too, right?” — Magda Archer, April 2015 #givemeeverythingandnothingbaby is curated by Bren O’Callaghan and was first commissioned by HOME Arts Centre, Manchester. HEATHER AND IVAN MORISON LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME ALONE

Artes Mundi 7

LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME ALONE is a carefully crafted sculpture, as well as the artists’ first permanent building in the United Kingdom, intended to function as a kiosk with a unique food and drink offering. The artists were inspired by the shingled stave churches of Norway and the ad hoc beach shacks of 1960s West Coast America to create an animal-like form that is inventive and playful in design. Its high quality detailing and distinctiveness has been focused upon to create a very special artwork — sure to become a remarkable destination in this newly regenerated part of Cardiff. LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME ALONE‘s aim is also to provide a nucleus for an array of programming in Porth Teigr, Cardiff Bay, and Chapter is delighted to be working with Heather and Ivan and with the local community to develop an unfolding programme of engagement in and around the sculpture. LMOLMA is commissioned by Igloo and EMP Projects in association with Chapter

Idiot-Syncrasy

Yellow Towel

We started out wanting to change the world with a performance. We felt like idiots. Then we danced a lot. We jumped. We called on the folk traditions of Sardinia and the Basque Country. We sang. We jumped some more. We committed. Now we promise to stick together. We promise to persevere. We promise to do our best.

As a child, Dana Michel would drape a yellow towel on her head in an attempt to emulate the blonde girls at school. As an adult, she revisits the imaginary world of her alter-ego in a performance free of cover-ups or censorship. Yellow Towel digs into black culture stereotypes, turning them inside out to see what is revealed. From deep memories a strange creature slowly emerges that adjusts to its surroundings in a slow and disconcerting metamorphosis. Initially attracted by the aesthetics of fashion, video clips, queer culture and comedy, Dana has made a strong mark as part of Montréal’s independent dance scene. Thu 19 Nov 8pm Over the past ten years Burrows and Fargion have built a body of duets which mix the formality of classical music composition with an open and often anarchic approach to performance and audiences, bringing them a worldwide following. In Cheap Lecture the two men steal the shape of John Cage’s Lecture on Nothing to make an impassioned and increasingly unhinged explanation of their work. It’s followed by The Cow Piece, which restages the lecture as a riotous celebration of the limits of logic, where two tables become the staging ground for 12 plastic cows who dance, sing, speak, think, sleep, go, come and die in a series of ritual executions which have delighted and disconcerted audiences around the world. £14/£12/25 years and under £7 www.jonathanburrows.info

“Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion have created a performance that dances in your head. It’s superb” De Morgen, Belgium

Fri 20 Nov 8pm + Sat 21 Nov 9pm Perfection is boring. ODE TO THE ATTEMPT is a solo Martens has made for himself. Authenticity, manipulation, coolness, perfectionism, humour and melancholy form the extremes between which he moves. The result a selfportrait laying bare choices he makes about his way of working and living. “After creating a group work for eight dancers being alone on stage is like coming home. But at the same time it starts a fight with yourself, because that is what creating art is about: having something to say, and doubting the next day whether what you say is of any importance to anyone.” Jan’s performance on Friday 20 November will be accompanied by a solo made during the festival by an artist selected through an open-call process. Friday (including accompanying open-call solo performance): £14/£12/25 years and under £7 Saturday: £10/£8/25 years and under £5 Tickets for ODE TO THE ATTEMPT are half price for the Saturday performance if you book tickets for Good News from the Future at the same time. www.janmartens.com

Theatr Ffynnon & Theatr Iolo present

The Unique Me Thu 19 + Fri 20 Nov 7.30pm It was a drizzly, grey November day when I was wandering the streets of our little town wondering where am I going? Where have I been? Where have I come from? WHO AM I REALLY? In the distance I could see the Old Library and there outside a curious man ushering people in and people out, rather hypnotically. Then something caught my eye — I looked down — there in a puddle floating on a leaf was an envelope and it had my name written on it. Intrigued I bent down and picked it up. As I shook the droplets of water off the envelope which had made the ink run — I could still see a name, my name! My heart was racing — I took a deep breath… and carefully opened the envelope and pulled out a note. There in bold letters the words… YOUR APPOINTMENT AT THE ARCHIVE BUREAU OF DISTINCT POSSIBILITIES IS FOR THIS EVENING AT 7.30PM. DO NOT BE LATE! Join Theatr Fynnon & Theatr Iolo for an illuminating and insightful evening where we search for that something that makes us uniquely ourselves and wonderfully human. The Greatest Liar In All The World

18

Half a dozen friends and relatives come together one Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day at the house of Neville and Belinda. Typical of any family Christmas, the characters squabble, and just like any family disagreement, some rows hit more nerves than others. There are children among the party and though unseen by the audience, their presence is always felt. Highlights include a chaotically incompetent puppet show and a midnight love scene that sets off a fearful din among mechanical Christmas toys. The play was originally presented at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough in September 1980. £10/£8 (only on Tuesday + Thursday performances)

“Whoever said Christmas was for kids? It’s Armageddon for grown-ups” Independent

Familia de la Noche’s roller-coaster of a show follows the story of The Liar. A world weary mentalist act who has reached the end of his tether and threatens to end it all live on stage. His company of glamorous and not so glamorous assistants manage to distract him from his imminent demise and convince him to tell the story of his infamous origins. Using a hilarious mix of clowning, puppetry, music and shadowplay, The Greatest Liar in all the World has enchanted audiences aged 8 to 88. £10/£8 Supported by Arts Council of Wales, Pontardawe Arts Centre and Wiltons Music Hall.

2015: The Year of Women in Film

From L to R: Make More Noise! Suffragette

Currently women filmmakers are only involved in 26% of feature length films released in the UK, and within that only 7% directed blockbusters during 2013-14. In a bid to redress the gender imbalance we are offering a rare chance to see some films by pioneers of experimental cinema and celebrating our suffragette sisters.

“You have to make more noise than anybody else, you have to make yourself more obtrusive than anybody else, you have to fill all the papers more than anybody else. ” Emmeline Pankhurst

Thursday’s Child Wed 4 Nov

Wales/1989/54mins/no cert. Dir: Michelle Ryan. With: Sharon Morgan, Gwyn A Williams.

Historian Gwyn Williams takes us through the origins of Sylvia Pankhurst. Best remembered as a suffragette, she was also a passionate supporter of the Russian Revolution, a founder of the first British Communist Party and a talented visual artist. + Join us for a panel discussion with Women’s Equality Network Wales prior to the screening.

Suffragette

Fri 30 Oct — Thu 12 Nov UK/2015/106mins/12A. Dir: Sarah Gavron. With: Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham-Carter, Brendan Gleeson, Meryl Streep.

Maud, a working wife and mother, finds her life changed forever when she is recruited to join the UK’s suffragette movement. Galvanised by Emmeline Pankhurst she joins the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, women from all walks of life forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State. Inspired by true events, this moving drama explores the passion and heartbreak of those who risked all they had for women’s right to vote. Audio descriptions and soft subtitles available, please see the calendar for details.

Make More Noise! Suffragettes In Silent Film Mon 2 + Thu 5 Nov

UK/1899 — 1917/80mins/PG. New archival compilation from the BFI National Archive.

THE TIME IS NOW is a UK-wide film project, launching Oct 15, celebrating women forcing change, curated and produced by Showroom Workstation and Film Hub North in partnership with Pathé and Twentieth Century Fox. THE TIME IS NOW is a BFI Film Audience Network initiative with the support of the BFI, awarding funds from The National Lottery.

Suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst’s legendary speech of November 1913 reflected the energetic and determined tactics of suffragette women, which was to stand up at every public event and cry out ‘votes for women!’ Cinema was born just as their campaign was gathering momentum, and this is a chance to see how women were being portrayed on the screen, while their battles were being waged on the streets outside.

Mam

Tue 3 Nov Wales/1988/52mins/no cert. Dir: Michelle Ryan. With: Sharon Morgan, Rachel Thomas.

The Welsh ‘mam’ has played a central role in the social, cultural and economic life of the South Wales valleys for generations. In literature and film she has been portrayed as a powerful matriarch within the confines of the miner’s home and family. Through interviews, drama and archive films, we can look behind these myths to examine the reality of Welsh women both past and present and how the myth disguises the reality of oppression and subordination. + Join us for a Q&A with director Michelle Ryan.

USA/2015/240mins/ctba. Dir: Anna D. Shapiro. With: Chris O’Dowd, James Franco.

France/1975/89mins/PG. Dir: Orson Welles. With: Orson Welles, Oja Kodat, François Reichenbach.

The hit Broadway production, filmed on stage in New York is a landmark revival of Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck’s play. A powerful and enduring portrait of the American spirit and a heart breaking testament to the bonds of friendship.

A twinkly eyed meditation on fake, front and movie make-believe. Welles presents the remarkable story of notorious art forger Elmyr de Hory, whose biography was being written by American journalist Clifford Irving, apparently intoxicated by the occult fabrication of talent and identity. There’s a wintry sadness and poignancy in his penultimate film, an elegant retreat into a hall of mirrors.

If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choice. A man arrives with his brother (in the form of a dog) to navigate this dangerous dating scene.

Eilis Lacey, a young Irish immigrant lured by the promise of America, departs the comfort of her mother’s home for New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis off her feet. Wings Of Desire Sun 1 + Tue 3 Nov

Germany/1987/128mins/12. Dir: Wim Wenders. With: Bruno Ganz, Solveig Dommartin, Otto Sander.

Damien and Cassiel are angels who watch over and move invisibly through the divided city of Berlin, watching, listening and comparing notes. They cannot directly change events and listen to the thoughts of citizens below, until Damien falls in love with a beautiful, lonely trapeze artist. A seductive and masterful reverie buoyed by the beautiful cinematography of the legendary Henri Alekan.

Gone With The Wind Sun 8 + Tue 10 Nov

USA/1939/238mins/PG. Dir: Victor Fleming. With: Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Thomas Mitchell.

A sumptuous and unrivalled epic from the golden age of filmmaking and one of the first to be made in splendid Technicolor, the story of Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler swept the Oscars in 1939. Scarlett is a petulant belle wreaking havoc on the lives of others in her pursuit of Ashley Wilkes and her dealings with Rhett. UK/1945/86mins/PG. Dir: David Lean. With: Celia Johnson, Trevor Howard, Stanley Holloway.

After a chance meeting on a train platform, a married doctor and a suburban housewife enter into a muted but adoring, ultimately doomed, love affair. With its evocative noir-ish setting, swooning Rachmaninoff score and piercing performances veering from frazzled cynicism to an exquisite English trance of unhappiness, Lean’s defining drama is a classic of passionate reserve.

Letter From An Unknown Woman Sun 22 + Tue 24 Nov

USA/1948/86mins/U. Dir: Max Ophüls. With: Joan Fontaine, Louis Jordan, Mady Christians.

With sweeping, fluid camerawork and devastating central performances, this is the story of young Viennese dreamer Lisa and her desire for an unattainable man and the high-style world he inhabits. A grand, heart-breaking masterpiece suffused with opulence that resonates with sad and simple truths — just because one loves does not mean one is loved.

Doctor Zhivago Sun 29 Nov + Tue 1 Dec

USA/1965/193mins/PG. Dir: David Lean. With: Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, Rod Steiger, Alec Guinness.

Based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel by Boris Pasternak, Lean’s adaptation is a sweeping epic spanning the Russian Revolution and beyond.
