Welcome
chapter.org
welcome Chapter is an international arts venue known for making things happen. We’re about arts and audiences and creating artistic and social spaces that make a difference to how we think, who we are and what we want to become. We relish change and risk. We love space just to enjoy. We’re a meeting place for ideas, for inspiration, for innovation. We’re also a place where you can sit and chat, feel at home and feel welcome.
Andy Eagle Director Welcome to November in Chapter. Another fantastic programme awaits you and I’d like to recommend the forthcoming Experimentica festival (see pages 4-7 and 20-21). Also make sure that you venture to the Phil Collins’ Caravans on the Chapter forecourt as part of our collaboration with Artes Mundi (pages 8-9). As usual loads of fantastic events are happening — too many to mention — so please read on. Enjoy!
Graham Hill ICT Manager The Soundtrack festival looks great this year. I’m really looking forward to hearing David Arnold, the James Bond composer, talk about his work. I loved his Casino Royale score, it’s really subtle.

This year we are presenting a range of exciting works that in some way consider the notion of the ‘UNSEEN’: the challenging; the experimental; the genre defining. UNSEEN is not a theme for the festival, more a catalyst for ideas and an opportunity to explore the often hidden or ignored — the spaces between and on the edge. The programme — that this year takes place across our gallery, theatre, cinemas, lightbox, studios and public spaces — is also supported by a vibrant season of films in the cinema to celebrate 100 years of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) (see pages 20 and 21), and a collaborative programme of events as part of Artes Mundi 5 (see pages 8 and 9). In the meantime, if you would like to participate in this year’s festival please read on overleaf. A full schedule of activity will be available to download from our website www.chapter.org A day pass costs £12/£10/£8; or for £40 (early bird price of £30 before 7 Nov) you can gain access to any event over the 5 days, unless otherwise stated. Experimentica is supported by the Arts Council of Wales and Cardiff Contemporary.
Hannah Firth Head of Visual & Live Arts We’re really excited about this year’s Experimentica which is taking place across theatre, cinema, gallery and our social spaces — as well as in locations around the city. We’re also collaborating for the first time with Artes Mundi to bring you an additional showcase of some of their shortlisted artists. Look out for the full 5-day schedule in our Experimentica brochure or online.

MONICA ROSS ACT OF MEMORY: CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS ‘Anniversary — an act of memory’ is a performance series in 60 acts, focusing on the importance and relevance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Act of Memory is keen to recruit performers who will, alongside artist Monica Ross, learn and recite from memory individual Articles from the Declaration, in their preferred language. The UDHR is translated into 385 languages and to date more than 400 people have taken part in this work in over 50 languages. Although the text remains the same, each voice gives its own context and we are encouraging participants to celebrate the diversity of language in Cardiff and Wales. Please join us for a workshop with Monica Ross at 7pm on Thursday 1 November, where she will talk about the project and outline how it will work at Chapter. The performance will take place at 12 noon on Saturday 24 November as part of the Experimentica festival and so participants will need to be free on this date to take part.
EXPERIMENTICA: VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME Wed 21 — Sun 25 Nov
Experimentica is looking for enthusiastic, friendly and energetic volunteers to take part in this year’s festival. As part of the team you will be integral to the day-to-day running of the festival and will be involved with welcoming artists, guests and members of the public to Chapter. You will need to be available between 19 and 25 November inclusive and willing to work flexible hours to suit the festival schedule. If you would like to apply to be part of the team please send a CV and covering letter (no more than 2 sides of A4) outlining your interest and experience to visual.arts@chapter.org by midday on Wednesday 7 November 2012.
Please contact visual.arts@chapter.org for more information or to register your interest.

EXPERIMENTICA: SECOND LEVEL COURSE An Introduction to Performance Art: Level 2
Tuesdays between 22 Jan and 12 Mar 2013, 7-9pm Following on from the success of our 2011 and 2012 courses, Chapter is delighted to announce a second level ‘An Introduction to Performance Art’ programme. This course is a follow-on opportunity for those who have attended the Level 1 ‘An Introduction to Performance Art’ course and who wish to continue their studies, or for artists who an interest in or some knowledge of the performative. This eight-week evening course, devised and run by Davida Hewlett, will provide an opportunity to study, make work and discuss a contemporary understanding of performance art and its major themes. ‘Performance art’ as a term describes artworks that range from art actions, experimental performance, installation and live art, as well as dance and theatre. It continues to influence much of contemporary practice at venues like Chapter as well as galleries, museums, festivals and artist-run projects across the world.
‘An Introduction to Performance Art: Level 2’ has a practical emphasis, including task-based exercises and activities, one-to-one tutorials and group discussion. This provides an opportunity for attendees to bring and develop existing work, or generate new material in a playful and supportive environment. Informal lectures exploring artists’ works are shown and explained through a historical and thematic framework. There is a particular emphasis on exploring the relationship between fine art and performance, and its current trends. Places on the course are limited and a commitment to attend the whole course is requested. For more information please contact hannah.firth@chapter.org £75/£50

Phil Collins: This Unfortunate Thing Between Us (2011) Until 13 January
Outside our entrance two second–hand caravans are hosting the UK premiere of This Unfortunate Thing Between Us. First performed in September 2011 in a theatre in the centre of Berlin and broadcast live on German digital television, TUTBU TV is an alternative home shopping channel selling real life experiences at promotional prices in place of mass produced commodities. Hosted by a cast of actors and porn workers, and featuring a soundtrack by Wales’ own Gruff Rhys and Y Niwl, TUTBU adopts the format of teleshopping, with pitches, demonstrations and live phone–ins, providing a tantalising glimpse into what could be the future of consumer television. So kick back with a cuppa, cwtch up round the telly with pals old and new, to the patter of rain on the roof and only one channel working: TUTBU TV — more experience isn’t possible! Free

Miriam Bäckström: Motherfucker
Wed 28 Nov 7pm & 9pm Premiere of the artist’s play (2011-12) Motherfucker explores the complex roles, positions and perspectives within a relationship. A female director asks a male actor to forge a character whom she wants to meet in order to be able to leave. As the drama unfolds, so does the shifting control and dependencies. Humiliation and ridicule become tools and raw material. The woman wants to create a character who is a transparently despicable and conniving person. She gives him direction but wants him to act of his own volition, asking him to take the role of the ‘bastard’, pushing him so that he is no longer acting but becomes the embodiment of the ‘Motherfucker’. The performance is mixed with live video feed, creating a paradox between the real and mediated video that is simultaneously being projected. £10/£5 concs

Last chance to catch The future’s not what it used to be Until Sun 4 Nov Our latest exhibition features ten international artists exploring the concepts of past, present and future. Using a range of media, the artists present multiple perspectives of their changing landscape, encouraging us to define and redefine our own relationships to the world. Susan Hiller, Vernon Ah Kee and Tony Albert give voice to indigenous cultures in the hope that we learn from the past; Marjetica Potrc and Monika Sosnowska’s architectural and sculptural works investigate the poetics and politics of space; Amie Siegel and Jeremy Millar explore how events in history resonate with our understanding and experience of the present; Patricia Piccinini engages us with the changing nature of our environment; Darren Almond and Matt Bryans mark, manipulate and erase time. This exhibition has been supported by the Henry Moore Foundation and Queensland Government through the Indigenous Arts Marketing and Export Agency (QIAMEA). Omidaze Productions Things Beginning with M
Written by Carmen Medway Stephens, directed by Louise Osborn, performed by Sharon Morgan and Sara Lloyd-Gregory In a village affected by unemployment and poverty a girl dreams of getting out, and when her chance arrives of escaping the valley she takes it. She marries her Mormon missionary to live the American dream but to what consequences? Often the worse war is the one at home, fought between knife and fork, table and chair. This play explores where ‘home’ is, the meaning of family and asks, is the grass greener on other side?
How do women tell each other their stories? How do women map out their journeys through womanhood from adolescence to old age? Where do women share their information, advice, facts, stories, truths, wisdom and secrets so that we can learn from each other? And why do all these things begin with M? An experimental and collaborative fusion of theatre, new writing, comedy, movement and visual art using real women’s stories.

Hanns Eisler
Hanns Eisler (1898-1962) was one of the most fascinating and controversial Austrian composers of the twentieth-century. A man of powerful convictions, he dedicated his life to fighting all forms of political and social repression, and suffered the double indignity of enforced exile from both Nazi Germany and McCarthyist America. He was friends with Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, Thomas Mann, Charles Laughton and most notably with Bertolt Brecht among many others. Eisler composed in various genres: from chamber pieces to ‘agitprop’ ballads and choruses for the Workers’ Movement; from full symphonic works to the more conventional film scores he wrote for Hollywood.

Nieuwe Gronden (New Earth)
Netherlands/1933/30mins. Dir: Joris Ivens.
Hanns Eisler and filmmaker Joris Ivens met in the cultural Mecca of 1920’s Berlin. After avant-garde formal experiments the two men brought their art into action against fascism and in favour of the communist labour movement in Ivens’ impressive film about the construction of the Zuiderzee dykes near Amsterdam. New Earth is an eloquent portrayal of the catastrophes subsequently visited upon Dutch workers by the necessary closing of these dykes. Combining dramatic re-enactments, stock footage, and documentary materials with a stirring score by Eisler, New Earth is a classic of political documentary.

The Third Uncles Sat 10 Nov 8pm With the resurgence of interest in Welsh music it’s time, perhaps, to reflect on one of the early trailblazers. They might not have reached the dizzying heights of the summit themselves — but it’s undeniable that they hammered in a few flags to the rock face and made it a little bit easier for the ones that followed. So, dig out the paisley and the badge-strewn cardigans. Jump up and down. Dance. And go ‘wooooooooooooo’ really loudly! £10/£8
The Third Uncles
The Third Uncles were a guitar band from Cardiff who were ahead of their time. Well, two or three weeks ahead of their time maybe. Signed by Chrysalis in 1988 they toured the UK with the likes of The La’s and The Weather Prophets and released a single — ‘Bluedress Day’ — which has since been regarded as something of a lost pop classic. Thankfully it has now been found again (it was behind the fridge all the time) and the band have reformed to play Chapter — their spiritual home — for a special oneoff gig.

Blackboard Jungle
5 Broken Cameras
USA/1955/103mins/12A. Dir: Richard Brooks. With Glenn Ford, Sidney Poitier, Anne Francis.
Palestine/90mins/2012/15. Dir: Emad Burnat, Guy Davidi.
Sun 4 + Tue 6 Nov
The BBFC passed this tale of an altruistic teacher attempting to ‘reach’ his disillusioned students only after several minutes of cuts. Still, reports proliferated of Teddy Boy audiences being provoked into seat-slashing revelry by the sound of ‘Rock Around the Clock’. Initially viewed by the Board as ‘a most unpleasant film’, the film has since become a recognised milestone in the evolution of the ‘teensploitation’ genre.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Sat 10 Nov
USA/1984/118mins/12A. Dir: Steven Spielberg.
The BBFC Chairman personally flew to LA to cut the film in order for it to receive the PG certificate required by the studio. Now reclassified as a 12A, this is the first theatrical release of the film in its entirety. See Family Features page 28
Enter The Dragon Sun 11 + Tue 13 Nov
Hong Kong/1973/99mins/18. Dir: Robert Clouse. With Bruce Lee, John Saxon.
This mainstream martial arts hit fell foul of the BBFC’s anxieties about violence and martial arts weaponry. After reading about the ready availability of flying stars and rice flails (nunchaku), chief censor James Ferman effectively banned such instruments from UK screens until the turn of the century, arguing that – unlike guns — these weapons could be legally purchased in the UK.

Cape Fear
Sun 18 + Tue 20 Nov
USA/1962/106mins/15. Dir: J L Thompson. With Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, Polly Bergen, Lori Martin.
This violent thriller put the Board in the unusual position of being vilified by the tabloids for being too stringent: ‘161 Cuts In One Film’ declared an outraged Daily Express. But while Thompson complained and campaigned against the censor’s scissors, the then BBFC chief later wrote that leading man Gregory Peck had personally approved all of his cuts. Also part of Soundtrack Festival — see pages 22-23
Fri 23 — Wed 28 Nov
Filmed from the perspective of Palestinian farm labourer Emad Burnat, this documentary was shot using six different video cameras — five of which were destroyed in the process of documenting Emad’s family’s life as well as Palestinian and International resistance to Israeli appropriation of land and occupation. The film chronicles his son growing into a precocious pre-schooler against the backdrop of the many non-violent protests that have become an intrinsic part of life.
The Shining
Fri 23 — Thu 29 Nov
USA/1990/144mins/15. Dir: Stanley Kubrick. With Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall.
This is a beautiful restoration of Kubrick’s truly chilling horror to its full glory about a young family who take on the care of a closed resort hotel high in the Colorado mountains during the long winter, only to find that their son’s imaginary friend ‘Tony’ knows a few secrets. Those extra 24mins, previously only seen in the US, hold a few secrets of their own. Double bill ticket price £12/£10 with Room 237
Room 237: Being an Inquiry into The Shining in 9 Parts Fri 23 — Thu 29 Nov
USA/2012/102mins/15. Dir: Rodney Ascher.
The Shining may be over 30 years old but it continues to inspire debate, speculation and mystery. Over the course of Room 237, very different points of view from the psychoanalytical, historical and occasionally far-fetched, are illuminated through voice over, film clips, animation and dramatic re-enactments. Double bill ticket price £12/£10 with The Shining
Sick: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist Sun 25 + Tue 27 Nov
USA/1997/92mins/18. Dir: Kirby Dick.
Kirby Dick documented the proud life and lifestyle of cystic fibrosis sufferer Bob Flanagan, the LA writer, performance artist, comic and BDSM celebrity who remained an advocate of the liberating power of consensual S&M throughout his terminal illness. The BBFC required three-and-a-half minutes of cuts in order to classify the film as an 18.

USA/2012/90mins/12A. Dir: Sally Potter. With Christina Hendricks, Elle Fanning, Annette Bening.
As the nuclear threat of the Cold War meets the sexual revolution in swinging sixties London, the lifelong friendship of two teenage girls born on the day the atom bomb fell on Hiroshima is shattered by ideological differences and personal betrayals. Sally Potter’s latest feature plunges into that heady moment when change seemed just around the corner, but also offers a sobering look at the toll that this radical age took on the lives of its young idealists.
On The Road Fri 2 — Thu 15 Nov
France/2012/137mins/ctba. Dir: Walter Salles. With: Viggo Mortensen, Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kirsten Stewart.

Untouchable Fri 2 — Thu 8 Nov

When wealthy quadriplegic Philippe interviews for a live-in carer, he meets several highly qualified but dull candidates, until Driss appears, a young offender who only attends the interview to meet the criteria of his unemployment benefits. One of the most successful films ever released in France, this witty, heart-warming comedy focuses on the unlikely friendship that develops between the two men as they introduce each other to art, culture, hanggliding and high-speed car chases.
Bad Film Club: The Beach Girls Sun 4 Nov
USA/1982/91mins/18.
Nicko and Joe are back with live commentary on the summer classic Beach Girls. Living up to the reputation of films that have their entire plot in the title, Beach Girls is about some girls who go to stay at the beach. Partying, fast living, quick drinking girls band together and solve an international drugs ring all without the aid of most of their clothing.
Rust and Bone Fri 9 — Thu 22 Nov
France/2012/120mins/15/subtitles. Dir: Jacques Audiard. With Marion Cotillard, Matthias Schoenaerts.
When Ali suddenly finds himself in charge of his estranged 5 year old son, penniless and without friends he seeks shelter at his sister’s in Antibes. Finding work as a bouncer at a local nightclub Ali meets Stephanie, a beautiful, self-confident woman, and leaves her his number. When he sees her again she is crammed into a wheelchair after losing both her legs, and her dreams. Audiard has created a beautiful film which shows them sharing genuine moments, but without pity or compromise.
Sister
Fri 9 — Thu 15 Nov
France/2012/100mins/15/subtitles. Dir: Ursula Meier. With Lea Seydoux, Kacy Mottet Klein, Gillian Anderson, Martin Compston.
Precocious 12 year old Simon lives with his wild and irresponsible older sister in a small apartment below a luxurious ski resort nestled in the Swiss Alps. Each day, Simon ascends the lofty mountain above, pilfering ski equipment from the rich and selling it to get by. Left unsupervised, his newfound criminal enterprise and growing attachment to the seasonal workers and guests sends his precarious relationship with his sister spiralling out of control.
Tabu
Fri 9 — Tue 13 Nov
Mexico/2012/118mins/15/subtitles. Dir: Miguel Gomes.
Shot in luminous black and white, Tabu is divided into two distinct yet complimentary storylines. The first, set in present-day Lisbon, follows the melancholy Pilar, a recently retired cinephile, and her fretful relationship with eccentric elderly neighbour Aurora. The second, told through poetic voice-over, goes back in time to colonial Africa, where the tale of young Aurora’s violent amour fou unfolds like a Hemmingway story against green hills, snow-capped mountains and vast, roaming plantations. A virtuoso film which plays with history, sound, the concept of linear narration as well as the ideas of melodrama, slapstick, passion and tragedy – all with equal servings of melancholy and wit.

Australia/2012/103mins/PG. Dir: Wayne Blair. With Chris O’Dowd, Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens, Miranda Tapsell.
For four young women from a remote Aboriginal mission, 1968 was the year that changed their lives forever. Dave flies them to the Mekong Delta war-zones of South Vietnam, where they sing up a storm with soul classics for the American Marines, dodge bullets and maybe fall in love.
About Elly
Fri 16 — Thu 22 Nov
Iran/2009/118mins/12A/subtitles. Dir: Asghar Farhadi. With Golshifteh Farahani, Shahab Hosseini, Taraneh Alidoosti.
From the director of the Oscar winning A Separation comes this engrossing mystery about a group of student friends spending their holidays in a large house by the coast of the Caspian Sea. Sepideh, who has organised the trip, invites her work colleague Elly in the hope that she may respond to the charms of her friend Ahmad who has just ended a relationship. Understanding the set-up, they go along with the charade and the group’s holiday goes well until the sudden disappearance of Elly. Award winning director Farhadi has yet again produced an outstanding and morally challenging piece of cinema which ensures both us and the characters themselves remain under pressure and off-balance.
“a really absorbing picture, powerfully acted, disturbing and suspenseful” The Guardian
Mon 19 — Thu 22 Nov
USA/2011/99mins/12A. Dir: Ron Fricke.
Filmed over a four-year period in twenty-five countries across five continents, Samsara takes the form of a non-verbal guided meditation. Transporting us to the varied worlds of sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial complexes and natural wonders but rooted very firmly in the human experience, the team that brought us Baraka and Chronos have teamed up again to subvert our expectations of a traditional documentary. It encourages our own interpretations inspired by breath-taking images that infuse the ancient with the modern, set against a mesmerizing musical score featuring the work of Lisa Gerrard, Michael Stearns and Marcellow De Francisci. Illuminating the link between humanity and the rest of nature, it shows how our life-cycle mirrors the rhythm of the planet and is essential viewing on the big screen.

Behind the scenes we also supported 100s of projects by providing space and advice. We are proud that we earn over 70% of the money we need to make this happen ourselves through our box office, café-bar sales and space hires. Support from funders, trusts, foundations and sponsors helps us meet the gap but as a registered charity we also rely on the support of 100s of individuals making small donations. Here are some ways you can help.
£250 Adopt a Seat Adopt a cinema or theatre seat for yourself or a friend. Your engraved plaque will adorn a seat of your choice for 10 years.
