Welcome

There’s no rest for the wicked as we continue with our jampacked autumn. Here’s what we’ve got in store for November. Do you enjoy seeing art in less conventional settings? We can oblige! Experimentica, our annual festival of live and time-based art is back, 5–9 November (p6–9). With performances and actions taking place around the building and the city, you’re likely to see some wonderful and peculiar things as you pop in this month. We’ll also be working with artist Richard Woods who has transformed a building at Cardiff Castle (p10) with lots of colour and wit. Elsewhere, our cinema’s Sci-Fi season continues with some cult classics, silent films and new releases that take in aliens and co-existence. You might also want to take a trip as we wrap up warm and brave the November chill to watch fabulous films at Castell Coch and Raglan Castle (p32). Bringing the younger members of the family to Chapter? There are several workshops for the young aspiring filmmaker and a fun-filled sewing course that’ll teach the basics in a fun and ‘sewcial’ way. Thanks for reading and see you soon!

Artes Mundi 6 Until Sun 22 Feb 2015

We are delighted to be working with Artes Mundi to present work by Karen Mirza and Brad Butler (UK), Renzo Martens (The Netherlands) and Sharon Lockhart (USA). Works by the other Artes Mundi 6 shortlisted artists can be seen at National Museum Cardiff and Ffotogallery, Penarth. For details about all of the shortlisted artists and opening times at other venues please visit www.artesmundi.org

Renzo Martens and the Institute for Human Activities Lightbox and Theatre Foyer

Renzo Martens lives and works in Brussels and Kinshasa and is known for his disturbing documentaries in which he travels to war-torn countries and places himself at the centre of the action, demonstrating how Western spectators consume distant trauma. Martens presents Episode 3 (Enjoy Poverty) in which he visits the ruined Congo, interviewing photographers, plantation owners and locals; acting the role of Western journalist, colonist, missionary and aid worker. His film focuses on one observation: poverty is Africa’s biggest export, and as with other natural resources, it is exploited by the Western world through the media. He lectures locals about poverty as a commodity and encourages them to sell their own photographs of starvation and death rather than let Western journalists profit from their humanitarian disaster.

Sharon Lockhart Gallery Sharon Lockhart works with individuals and groups to make still and moving images that are both visually compelling and socially engaged. One of Lockhart’s major works is Lunch Break (2008) which features 42 shipyard workers as they take their midday break. Over the course of the lunch break we see workers engaged in a wide range of activities — reading, sleeping, and talking — in addition to actually eating their midday meal. For Artes Mundi 6, Lockhart shows one of two films from Lunch Break entitled Exit. Filmed over a five-day working week, each of the five takes that comprise Exit shows the long progression of workers leaving the Bath Iron Works at the end of their shift. Reminiscent of Louis Lumiere’s film, Leaving the Lumiere Factory, Exit emphasises the flow of time and the nuances of daily experience. Exhibition open: Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 12–6pm; Thursday & Friday 12–8pm; closed Monday

Karen Mirza and Brad Butler Gallery and Art in the Bar

Mirza and Butler have worked together since 1998, developing a layered practice that consists of film, installation, performance, publishing and curating. Their work challenges terms such as participation, collaboration and the traditional roles of the artist as producer and the audience as recipient. For Artes Mundi 6, Mirza and Butler present The Unreliable Narrator, a constellation of works that take advantage of the gap between fiction and reality. In You are the Prime Minister, a prominent neon becomes an empowering invitation to take up the title role in a fantasy fiction. A video installation also speaks of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, alternately from a position of the terrorists and of a seemingly impartial commentator.

Lunchtime Events Thursdays 1.05 — 1.30pm

Performers from across Wales create unique responses to Artes Mundi 6, taking inspiration from the shortlisted artists’ exhibited works, materials, themes or countries:

Thu 6 Nov ‘Wimmin’ World Premiere of a new work by dance artists Sarah Hudson and Cet Haf.

Thu 20 Nov A selection of Welsh critics will be joined by writers, poets and singers from Sherman 5, to respond to the Artes Mundi 6 exhibition at Chapter

Established in 2001, Experimentica is our annual five–day Festival of live art. Experimentica hosts a dynamic programme of performance and interdisciplinary projects and offers a significant platform for UK and international artists to produce or introduce their work. The Festival can be entertaining, dangerous, confusing, life–affirming, playful, provocative, witty, engaging, irritating and everything in between. This year’s Festival takes its title from the 2009 science fiction thriller District 9 (directed by Neill Blomkamp), a multi–layered allegory that explores our attitudes to outsiders. The title is not a theme but rather a starting point in which participants can explore how we co–exist. Experimentica14 is supported by the Arts Council of Wales and Cardiff Contemporary. Co-existence as a theme is also explored in our cinema’s season of Sci-Fi films. Turn to pages 28–31 for details on our screening of District 9, alongside other cult classics and a number of Afrofuturism Shorts celebrating alternative visions of tomorrow.

Unease

chapter.org

Thu 27 — Sat 29 Nov 7.30pm Chapter favourite Sean Tuan John returns this autumn with a new, hard-hitting and uncompromising show PUNISHMENT. This show builds on Sean’s previous focus on people on the Outside; those forgotten people hidden on the fringes of our society. PUNISHMENT explores the idea of deviance; what happens to people who act outside the accepted norm? How do we start to understand? Can we begin to forgive? Darkly humorous and emotionally charged PUNISHMENT is a provocative work exploring the restorative justice system as four male dancers physicalize the disturbing and dangerous elements of crime, marginalisation and the effects of social deviancy in this astonishing new performance from Wales’ most daring choreographer. Funded by The Arts Council of Wales, PUNISHMENT is an Aberystwyth Arts Centre co-production with support from Chapter and the University of South Wales. £12/£10 Age 16+

Sinfonia Cymru & Tom Raybould: Unease Wed 12 — Fri 14 Nov 7.30pm + 9pm You are right to be afraid of the dark; of being alone and of things you don’t understand. Fear is a good thing. Fear is your guide. A group of exemplary classical and contemporary musicians, film and theatre makers present their collections of uneasy sound, image and memory to colour the dark space around you. Because of their associations, technical difficulty, allusions or history, each offering represents an aspect of fear to the individual artist. The creative contract is that no one will be allowed to flinch. Continuing to build on the success of their previous collaboration, Unbuttoned, Sinfonia Cymru and Tom Raybould are taking a bold creative leap with the engagement of video artist John Collingswood, theatre director Gerald Tyler and immersive experience producer Alison John to present a swirling celebration of all that creates unease. £14/£12

Tue 11 — Sat 15 Nov 7.30pm (+ Matinée Sat 15 Nov 2.30pm) Chronicling the background to the start of World War 1, this musical play features sketches, scenes, songs and dances that portray the horrors of life in the trenches and the politics behind the war. Staged to commemorate the centenary of the start of WW1, Oh What a Lovely War was first staged in 1963 by Joan Littlewood Theatre Workshop, and the remarkable Richard Attenborough film was released in 1969. To reflect and honour the 50th anniversary of its Broadway production we return to the Joan Littlewood style of Pierrot costumes, audio visual effects and slides. Full of comedy, bravery and buffoonery, we see how the idealistic policies and class system of the era prolonged the war and de-humanised the soldiers, the play thus working as a fiercely anti-war production. Life After Beth

’71

Fri 31 Oct — Thu 6 Nov

Fri 24 Oct — Thu 6 Nov

USA/2014/89mins/15. Dir: Jeff Baena. With: Audrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan, John C. Reilly.

UK/2014/99mins/15. Dir: Yann Demange. With: Jack O’Connell, Sean Harris, Sam Reid.

Zach is grieving for his recently deceased girlfriend Beth, finding comfort in spending time with her parents who treat him like a son. Then one night Beth shows up: there’s a big hole in the ground at her gravesite, but she can’t remember dying. After confronting his shock, Zach’s in bliss, especially as Beth’s memory loss has wiped out the fact that she’d wanted to break up just before she died. But as time goes by she becomes stranger and she isn’t the only cadaver whose reset button has been punched. Sometimes tender, sometimes frantic and always funny.

Gary, a new recruit in the British army gets separated from his unit after a routine house search escalates into a terrifying street riot in Belfast. He must find a way to survive the night telling friend from foe in this gripping and uncompromisingly tense drama.

Effie Gray Fri 7– Thu 13 Nov UK/2014/108mins/12A. Dir: Richard Laxton. With: Dakota Fanning, Emma Thompson, Claudia Cardinale.

One of the great thinkers of the Victorian age: art critic, architect and poet John Ruskin championed the Pre-Raphaelite movement and was admired by Proust and Ghandi. However, there remains a period in his life which has baffled scholars: his brief, unconsummated and eventually annulled marriage to the beautiful Effie Gray. This deftly crafted drama from Emma Thompson, exploring strength of character and perception, shines with wit and intelligence.

Exploring the lighter side of cinema’s first adventures into the realms of the other-worldly. Scores composed and performed live by Paul Shallcross. In memory of Afan ab Alun, whose kind donation made this possible.

Un Homme de Têtes

The Thieving Hand

France/1898/1min. Dir: Georges Méliès.

USA/1908/6mins. Dir: J. Stuart Blackton.

Written, directed and acted by the great French innovator of early film Georges Méliès and featuring four decapitated heads, all of them belonging to Méliès.

An artificial arm is endowed with an uncontrollable instinct for thievery. It takes over the life of an innocent purchaser and leads him to the only place the arm can feel safely at home.

Une Excursion Incohérente

The Haunted House

France/1909/9mins. Dir: Segundo de Chomón.

USA/1921/21mins Dir: Buster Keaton.

A family day out in the woods turns into a day of horror. Chocolate worm cake, maggot roll and mice eggs are all on the menu as Chomón treats us to one of his finest surrealist fantasies.

Keaton’s spoof on the then popular ghost-house genre is packed to the rafters with gags and stunts to delight all audiences. Apart from Keaton himself, the starring role in this film is taken by none other than a collapsing staircase.

Prelude UK/1927/8mins. Dir: Castleton Knight.

A beautifully crafted dark film where a man sitting reading Edgar Allan Poe finds objects acquiring a sinister overtone, inspired by Rachmaninov’s famous Prelude in C sharp minor.

Jimi: All is by My Side

UK/2014/112mins/15. Dir: Stuart Murdoch. With: Olly Alexander, Hannah Murray, Pierre Boulanger.

UK/2014/118mins/15. Dir: John Ridley. With: André Benjamin, Imogen Poots, Hayley Atwell.

When Eve begins writing songs as a way to sort through some emotional problems, she meets James and Cassie, two musicians at crossroads of their own in this poignant coming-of-age story that doubles as a sublime indie-pop musical. The film began life as a suite of songs by Belle and Sebastian, and is set in the bohemian fantasia of Glasgow’s West End populated by mods, rockers and emo kids who have no qualms about breaking into song and dance.

We are dreamily taken through the year when backup guitarist Jimi Hendrix became a star, pursued by two women who help him break the UK: Linda Keith who introduced him to LSD and the business, and long term girlfriend and muse Kathy Etchingham. A stylised look at the legend, this is an intimate portrait of a sensitive young artist, revealing more in this short time than a conventional biopic.

Real to Reel

Tony Benn: Will and Testament

Sometimes real life is as peculiar and captivating as a Hollywood film. Real to reel is our regular documentary strand featuring films that take fascinating real events and people to the big screen.

Lion Ark Tue 11 Nov USA/2013/100mins/12A. Dir: Tim Phillips. With: Remy Ballivan, Bob Barker, Martin Beltran.

More action adventure than traditional documentary, we take a ride with Animal Defenders International as it conducts an ambitious and daring animal rescue. Defying the law, circus owners in Bolivia are keeping their lions in terrible conditions and treating them with cruelty. A sanctuary has been built in the USA, all that needs to be done is to break them out, but that means risking harm to themselves and the animals. + Q&A with director Tim Phillips

Mirage Men Wed 26 + Thu 27 Nov UK/2014/85mins/adv12A. Dir: Roland Denning, John Lundberg, Kypros Kyprianou.

Amongst the documents leaked by Edward Snowden were images from a presentation entitled The Art of Deception. Curiously, sandwiched in the middle of the document are three photographs of classic fake UFOs: a hub cap, a bunch of balloons, and one that turned out to be a seagull. Is this a new style of training or is the very idea of ETs a conspiracy going back decades? Some ufologists suggest that this is a double bluff designed to cover up the real story of long time contact. This film looks at the people whose actions have directly shaped the UFO mythology and their victims, drawing the viewer into a saucer-shaped hall of mirrors, where every lie contains elements of the truth.

Tony Benn: Will and Testament Tue 18 — Thu 20 Nov UK/2014/90mins/12A. Dir: Skip Kite.

The heart and soul of Britain’s left and arguably the most popular UK politician of all time, this is a vivid portrait of a man whose career transcended politics. Tony Benn reviews the triumphs and the upsets of his personal and political life, from his fight to retain his seat in the House of Commons after his elevation to the peerage, to his championship of the 1971-72 Upper Clyde Shipbuilders’ Work-in, to his battles with a hostile mainstream press. The long-time Labour MP participated in the making of this moving and informative tribute shortly before his death in March 2014.

The Case Against 8 Thu 20 Nov

USA/2014/109mins/adv15. Dir: Ben Cotner, Ryan White.

A riveting documentary chronicling the five-year campaign to have California’s Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in the state in 2008, overturned in federal court. The film beautifully connects the procedural ennui of large-scale legal cases with the individual struggles of those directly involved and gives inspiration to those still fighting for equality.
