Welcome
Welcome to your guide to all that’s in store at Chapter this November. It’s Experimentica time — our festival of live art has become a pretty iconic event in November, however this year we’re doing things a little differently… This month we’ll enjoy a mini festival, in anticipation of the full Experimentica which relaunches in the Spring, including the inimitable Greg Wohead who reimagines Elvis Presley’s Comeback Special and the unpredictable GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN (below), 31 Oct — 6 Nov (p8-9). We know how much the kids enjoy coming to the cinema on the weekend and Crafty Pictures, is a way to keep the film going well after the lights come up. See pages 16–17 for details of Crafty Pictures and other fun-filled activities for the little ones. Our Gallery continues to host Artes Mundi 7. Curious about the exhibition? Come along and chat to the live guides to dig a little deeper around this fascinating exhibition of world class contemporary art. As is customary this time of year, we’ll be taking some of our cinema screenings offsite. Wrap up warm, grab a hot drink and take in the sights, sounds and smells as we watch films at Caerphilly Castle, one of the most magical locations in south Wales (p20). Thanks for reading and see you soon!

Artes Mundi 7 Film Screenings
Until Sun 26 Feb 2017 We are delighted to be a partner venue hosting the Artes Mundi 7 exhibition. This is the third time that Chapter has collaborated with Artes Mundi, a contemporary arts organisation, best known for its biennial exhibition and prize which features some of the world’s leading contemporary artists. Chapter presents works by internationally acclaimed artists Nástio Mosquito and Lamia Joreige. The exhibition also extends to the contemporary art wing of National Museum Cardiff. The Artes Mundi 7 shortlist was selected by Élise Atangana, an independent curator based in Paris and Cameroon, Alistair Hudson, Director of Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art and Marie Muracciole, Director of the Beirut Art Centre. The exhibition features John Akomfrah, Neïl Beloufa, Amy Franceschini / Futurefarmers, Lamia Joreige, Nástio Mosquito and Bedwyr Williams. For more information visit www.artesmundi.org.

Lamia Joreige And the living is easy Sat 5 Nov 2.30pm France/2014/75mins/subtitles/no cert. Dir: Lamia Joreige.
Beirut, 2011, the city remains strangely quiet, in a state of expectancy, while the region is in great turmoil. Through five characters, mainly nonprofessional actors, Lamia Joreige creates a unique portrayal of her native town. Over several months, the director asked them to perform scenes inspired by their love affairs, professional lives, friendships and the places that are dear to them. The city and their feelings become deeply intertwined.

Artes Mundi 7 at Chapter Nástio Mosquito Embracing performance, video, music, poetry, installation, philosophy and digital art, Mosquito’s work bursts forth with fervent energy. Originally rooted in the broadcast industry as a director and cameraman, his practice is both confrontational and deeply witty, expressing an urgent desire to engage with reality at all levels. Nástio Mosquito’s exhibition for Artes Mundi 7 will include a new audiovisual installation entitled Transitory Suppository: Act#I Another Leader (2016). The installation revolves around a unique and absurd solution for a fictional country attempting to overcome its economic problems and transform itself into a world power. The artist takes centre stage, embodying the character of a despotic leader in a darkly humorous and pertinent exhibition.

Neïl Beloufa Tonight and the people Sat 19 Nov 2.30pm UK/2013/81mins/no cert. Dir: Neïl Beloufa.
Billed as an ‘artistic sitcom’, the debut feature of French film artist Neïl Beloufa is a beautiful, extraordinarily weird take on American soap operas, westerns and the apocalypse. In an imaginary ‘Far West’, cowboys, activists, hippies and self-obsessed twenty-somethings hang out on a Hollywood backlot, which mixes together the wild west, LA parking lots and movie dressing rooms. A truly original celebration of American pop culture.
Lamia Joreige uses archival documents and fictional elements to reflect on the relationship between individual stories and collective history. Her practice is rooted in the possibilities of representation of the Lebanese wars and their aftermath, specifically Beirut, a city at the centre of her imagery. For Artes Mundi 7 the artist will exhibit work at Chapter and National Museum Cardiff. Chapter will host the premiere of the latest work within the ongoing project Under-Writing Beirut — Nahr (The River), 2013-2016, entitled After the River. In this work Joreige investigates the urban areas in and around the river which defines the eastern border of Beirut, inviting a reflection on migration, the process of gentrification, and the notions of borders and landscape in our imaginary. Other elements of Under-Writing Beirut — Nahr will be shown at National Museum Cardiff.
Bedwyr Williams: Tyrrau Mawr, 2016 Bedywr Williams’ practice draws upon his own life experiences, highlighting and examining the friction between the deadly serious and the banal aspects of modern life. For Artes Mundi 7, Bedwyr has created a fictional city around Cadair Idris (Idris’ Chair) near Dolgellau in North Wales. The city draws its inspiration from mega cities built all over the world to house expanding populations and to sate burgeoning state ambition in times of economic boom. The film Tyrrau Mawr can be seen at National Museum Cardiff and Bedwyr has developed a companion work for Chapter’s Caffi Bar space. The large-scale diptych of day and night from the film also references the medium of matte painting, a device applied to live-action film footage to enable the illusion on film of environments that would otherwise be too expensive, or impossible, to build.

CARDIFF CONTEMPORARY
LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME ALONE: Heather & Ivan Morison
Offsite project at Heol Porth Teigr, Cardiff Bay CF10 4GA Until Sun 20 Nov Opening hours: Wednesday — Friday + Sunday 11am–4pm and Saturday 11am–8pm LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME ALONE is a carefully crafted sculpture, as well as the artists’ first permanent building in the United Kingdom. The artists were inspired by the shingled stave churches of Norway and the ad hoc beach shacks of 1960s West Coast America to create an animal-like form that is inventive and playful in design. For Cardiff Contemporary, Chapter has taken over the LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME ALONE cafe and is serving tasty, seasonal dishes around a bespoke banqueting table, providing a focus for conversation, activity and relaxation so that visitors can share the beautifully created public, open space in Porth Teigr. During November you can join the artists for the following fabulous live music events that can be enjoyed with warming winter treats from the café.
All events are free and no booking necessary:
Sat 5 Nov 6-8pm Zeuk (Ronnie Angel Pope & Marc Robert Roberts). Expect songs, soundscapes, musings, mutterings, walking, waking, cosmic dreaming, meandering, scrambling, scheming and some really serious stuff.
Sat 12 Nov 6-8pm Tim Bromage is an artist and musician whose practice draws upon an interest in stage magic, folklore and physical movement. Props and costume are combined with song, text, and other activities to create strange rituals. For LMOLMA Tim will be performing traditional folk songs.
Sat 19 Nov 6-8pm Our final feast around a fire with live music from Kit Wilmans Fegradoe. Kit is fascinated with presenting harmonious and textured sonic landscapes, allowing space for the listener to explore and play with the hope of eliciting a holistic experience of sound. Please note that events are outdoors and although we will provide you each with complimentary hand warmers and a waterproof poncho, we recommend you wrap up so you can enjoy the evening whatever the weather!
LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME ALONE is commissioned by IGLOO Regeneration and EMP Projects and managed and curated by Chapter. The programme of events to be held during Cardiff Contemporary is made possible through the generous support of Cardiff Contemporary and IGLOO Community Chest.

Greg Wohead Comeback Special
Christopher Brett Bailey KISSING THE SHOTGUN GOODNIGHT
Mon 31 Oct + Tue 1 Nov 8pm Jam sessions, patter with a Southern drawl, big dance numbers, and a bit of sweat: this is a re-enactment of Elvis Presley’s 1968 Comeback Special. Sort of. It’s an experiment in time drag; wearing another time as drag and dragging another time into the present. What happens if the Comeback comes back? Like a half-remembered dream or two mirrors facing each other or repeating a word so much it loses its meaning. Comeback Special is a double negative. It’s not the original, but it’s not not. Greg welcomes Elvis fans, theatre fans and anyone who thinks this peculiar re-enactment might be fun. He certainly does. Greg Wohead is a writer, performer and live artist who makes theatre performances, one-to-one pieces and audio work internationally. Comeback Special has been co-commissioned by Shoreditch Town Hall, Theatre in the Mill and South Street Arts Centre. A Jerwood Charitable Foundation/Bristol Old Vic Ferment Commission. Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
Wed 2 + Thu 3 Nov 8pm KISSING THE SHOTGUN GOODNIGHT, a neo-noir fever dream and a 120 decibel suicide note. Bailey’s words deliver a linguistic kaleidoscope of caustic cartoons, crackpot prophesies and demented erotica. A dense, poetic blend of the hallucinogenic and the hardboiled, all set to a warped collision of haunting musics and ear-popping noise. A sumptuous, cinematic melting pot of psycho-acoustic trickery, futurist soundscaping and dark psychedelia. Recommended for those with an aural fixation. No kids. No dogs. Rated R. 100 mins. Colour, 3D. £12/£10 Age 16+ Commissioned by Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, Cambridge Junction, Ovalhouse, Theatre in the Mill, and Theatr Iolo. Supported by Arts Council England. For the last two decades, Katy has been at the frontline of the customer service industry. From getting you high to supersizing your whopper meal she has done everything she can to make you happy. Join Katy for a very personal story of the ups and downs of what it means to serve you — the great British Public. Pay what you decide Age 18+ (features nudity and scenes of a sexual nature.)
In their last show, GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN destroyed the double-act that’s at the centre of their theatre work. So what now? They’ve been banging their heads against a brick wall, trying to feel something, over and over and over — but this time it seems like there really is nobody home. In this progress-showing of the material from the first new GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN show since 2013, come and get a glimpse of the monstrosity that’s being bolted together, grafted onto itself from the scrapheap, reprogrammed, and recklessly turned on. Birdsong | Cân Yr Adar Thu 10 Nov 10.30am There is a Celtic rainforest that lives and breathes in Wales. Birdsong / Cân Yr Adar tells a story through music inspired by RSPB Carngafallt, near Powys, which is home to a complex ecosystem, which makes up some of the country’s rainforest territory. Lose yourself in this landscape as we explore the hidden secrets. Escape the noise and learn to listen again. This wild life is brought to the stage through a live orchestral fusing of soulfolk and jazz. Pianist and jazz composer Gwilym Simcock collaborates with Welsh/ Bajan artist Kizzy Crawford and an ensemble from leading Welsh chamber orchestra Sinfonia Cymru to create a special collection of newly composed music. Created in partnership with RSPB Cymru, supported by Arts Council of Wales, the performance will be followed by a workshop in Chapter’s community garden (see page 17 for details of the workshop). Artfully portrayed by Eddie Izzard in a 2002 revival of the play, we see a man who has become trapped in his selfdelighting defence mechanisms. Filmmaker Jon Spira has tracked some of these people down and explored the bizarre community they have formed, to find out what it means to exist in the shadow of such a phenomenon.
