Welcome

There’s a stirring in Chapter this autumn. As those long balmy summer days fade away, the nights draw in and the ghosts and ghouls of winter come out to play, so there’s no better time for us to launch our Gothic season — Chapter Goes Dark. From our annual live arts festival, Experimentica and the 3 AM exhibition, to our monstrous season of BFI films, we’ve a huge range of performances, exhibitions, films, workshops and much more that delve in to the horror and romance of all things Gothic. Our programming team are here to fill you in on all that’s in store.

Sally Griffith Director of Cinema & Film Hub Wales Programmer As the autumn shadows grow longer, our minds here have turned to all things gothic. Embracing the darker side of human experience, Chapter Goes Dark celebrates the 13th year of Experimentica, exploring the notion of what it is to be ‘born under a bad sign’ with a fantastic programme of activity, including exhibitions, performances, cinema events, film screenings and activities for our young, with the Little Bleeders Film Club. With the creation of the Film Hub Wales and Chapter at its heart, we’ll be working with the Abertoir Film Festival and venues across the whole of Wales to celebrate the UK wide BFI Gothic season. Including a series of events in cinemas and unusual spaces such as castles and haunted stately homes, there’ll be lots to get your teeth into from now until early next year so please keep an eye out for more events as they confirm.

Almut Linde: Radical Beauty

Curated by Oliver Zybok Sat 12 Oct - Sun 24 Nov “My studio is the world,” says Almut Linde. Instead of working with brush and canvas, she works with people and social systems, in the process entering spheres where one would hardly expect artistic potential — such as in industrial production sites or on military manoeuvres. The mere documentation of events is however not what Almut Linde is aiming at. In her action photographs, sculptures and installations she specifically employs the techniques of Conceptual Art, Minimal Art and Action-Painting to direct attention to blind spots in perception. Linde has developed her practice from the observation of phenomena that are often perceived as dysfunctions or faults. Her works, which she realises from performances with people in real social spaces, are concerned with the basic questions of human existence, with the differences between individual existence and systematic constraint in social systems. She is always concerned with awareness of the movement behind the image. Radical Beauty is the first extensive exhibition tour by Almut Linde, with works dating from the past twenty years, and is accompanied by a substantial publication. Almut Linde was born in Lübeck, Germany in 1965. Solo exhibitions include: ‘Radical Beauty’, Kunstpalais Erlangen, Germany (2014), DA2, Domus Artium 2002, Salamanca, Spain and Form/Bewegung, Kunstverein Braunschweig, Germany (both 2013); ‘Existential’, Overbeck-Gesellschaft, Lübeck, Germany and ‘Social Codes’ (with Anne-Julie Raccoursier), rahncontemporary, Zürich, Switzerland (2012). Group exhibitions include ‘Emscherkunst2013. Blowing Free’, KunstVereineRuhr, Germany, ‘Visionen. Atmosphären der Veränderung’, Marta Herford, Germany, and ‘Hit the target!’ rahncontemporary, Zürich, Switzerland. Linde is represented by rahncontemporary www. rahncontemporary.com

EXPERIMENTICA 2013: BORN UNDER A BAD SIGN Wed 6 — Sun 10 Nov

Kathryn Ashill, Nigel Barrett & Louise Mari, Paul Becker, Richard Bowers, Tim Bromage, Roy Brown, Holly Davey, Cian Donnelly, Ben Ewart-Dean, Matthew de Kersaint Giraudeau, good cop bad cop, S Mark Gubb, Samuel Hasler, Mamoru Iriguchi, Richard James & Anthony Shapland, Jerusalem In My Heart, Pil & Galia Kollectiv, Almut Linde, Nicholas McArthur & Robert Molly Vaughan, Mike Pearson & Heike Roms Experimentica is a key event for the presentation of new performance and interdisciplinary projects across installation, film, video, sound art, dance and theatre. It is a significant platform for artists from Wales to produce or introduce their work, alongside contributions and commissions by internationally established artists. In 2013, Experimentica is 13 and we are taking our cue from the Number 13 — embracing and celebrating failure, risk, chance, the experimental, bad and good luck — with five packed days of presentations. We’re also bringing you a spine tingling programme of films to complement the festival. Working with the BFI we are presenting a Gothic season across the Autumn — with tales that feed on our darkest fears and desires and conjure the creatures of the night into being (see pages 12–16 for details). Experimentica is generously supported by the Arts Council of Wales. Additional support and partnerships are gratefully acknowledged with Shape Function, Literature Wales and British Film Institute. Tickets are priced as follows: £25 Festival Pass. A Festival pass will give you access to all of the Experimentica events. NB: A Festival pass does not guarantee entrance to those events which may have a smaller capacity. Arrive early to avoid disappointment! £10 per day £5 per individual event Tickets and passes are available online and at our box office. More details about the programme available at www.chapter.org

Samuel Hasler Artist This year’s Experimentica looks great. I’ve been involved with the festival within different roles for many years. This year I’m curating Off The Page, these will be peripheral events based specifically on text, art writing and the spoken word. One of the great things about Experimentica is the balance between taking a risky approach to curating and building a strong sense of community. This is something we’ll be bringing into the Off The Page events. It’ll be a bit DIY, a bit weird, but friendly and inclusive. Find further details for Off The Page on our website www.chapter.org/page-1

ART IN THE BAR

Kathryn Ashill: For Future Reference

Kathryn Ashill, For Future Reference, 2013

Fri 25 Oct — Sun 24 Nov Kathryn Ashill’s practice is a combination of drawing, installation, film and performance. These diverse mediums are used to convey Ashill’s highly autobiographical work, and delve deeper into narratives the artist draws from everyday life, local history, fiction and the future. The project began in October 2007 when Kathryn visited a psychic in New York; the reading was unforgiving, and the experience became a catalyst for a body of work that is still in progress. On returning from NYC she began to visit psychics regularly and has received a range of readings, most of which have conflicted, however there have been moments when the accuracy of knowledge has seemed uncanny. It is these moments, and the complex set of relations produced by the Fortune Tellers’ easy confidence in predicting terrible events, combined with the recipient’s desire to receive it, that interests Kathryn.

Biography Kathryn Ashill was born in Neath, 1984, and now lives and works in Glasgow where she is currently studying on the MFA programme at Glasgow School of Art. Kathryn has shown nationally and internationally since graduating from Swansea Metropolitan University in 2007. Recent exhibitions include; ‘For Future Reference’, Meantime Residency, Cheltenham, UK (2013); ‘For Future Reference’, Flux Factory NYC, USA, ‘Mother Time’ National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, UK, ‘Cockle-pit’ Adain Avion as part of Artists taking the lead for the cultural Olympiad (all 2012). Solo exhibitions include ‘In Memory of Balloon Girl’, St Davids Hall, Cardiff, UK (2011), and ‘Craig y Nos’, Pontardawe Art Centre, UK (2010). www.kathrynashill.com www.kathrynashill.blogspot.com

ART IN THE BAR

Stanley Donwood: Hollywood Dooom Fri 29 Nov 2013 — Sun 2 Mar 2014 Stanley Donwood’s practice veers from propagandist graphics to introspective illustrations and paintings. Hollywood Dooom depicts the renowned LA landscape being engulfed by fire, flood and a meteor storm, with the iconic Hollywood sign moments away from being submerged by the rising tides. Inspired by the aesthetics of the woodcut illustrations found in the 15th century publication Nuremberg Chronicle, Donwood hand carves his doomsday scenarios into linoleum which is then hand burnished onto Japanese Kozo paper. This recent body of work has developed from themes and subjects similar to Donwood’s 2006 work titled ‘London Views’, which began after being shaken by the Indian Ocean tsunami that claimed more than 229,000 lives. His original drawings evolved from being visual recordings of the destruction into reflections on the ecological consequences of contemporary lifestyle. A selection of linocut prints from the Lost Angeles series and London Views series will accompany the main wall mural in the Art in the Bar space.

Stanley Donwood, ‘Hollywood Dooom’ 2012

Biography Stanley Donwood was born 1968 in Essex and now lives and works in Bath. Donwood gained recognition in 1994 when he began designing album art for the Grammy-award winning band, Radiohead. His work has since been used for 15 singles, 9 EPs and various studio albums, including The Bends, Kid A, OK Computer and Hail to the Thief. In addition to his work with Radiohead, Donwood has successfully exhibited paintings, etchings, linoprints and screenprints across Europe, Asia and USA. Recent Exhibitions include; ‘Lost Angeles’ Subliminal Projects, Los Angeles, USA (2012); ‘Minotaur’ Old Vic Tunnels, London, UK, (2011) ‘RED MAZE’ Schunck, Heerlen, Holland (2010); ‘Palimpsest’ Mondo Bizzarro Gallery, Rome, Italy, ‘OVER NORMAL’, Fifty24SF Gallery, San Francisco, USA (all 2010); ‘I LOVE THE MODERN WORLD’ Tokyo Gallery + BTAP, Tokyo (2008).

3 AM: Wonder, Paranoia and the Restless Night Fri 13 Dec 2013 — Sun 2 Mar 2014

Francis Alÿs, Tonico Lemos Auad, Jordan Baseman, Sandra Cinto, Dorothy Cross, Dornith Doherty, Anthony Goicolea, Marc Hulson, Rachel Kneebone, Nathan Mabry, Michael Palm & Willi Dorner, Hirsch Perlman, Ed Pien, Lucy Reynolds, Sophy Rickett, Paul Rooney, Anj Smith, Fred Tomaselli, Danny Treacy, Bettina von Zwehl and Tom Wood. Bleary-eyed sleepers woken up to be photographed, prowling coyotes caught on specialist digital cameras, and a helicopter spotlight searching the night time waters for a missing person. These are just some of the highlights of this exhibition curated by Angela Kingston and toured from The Bluecoat in Liverpool this autumn. The exhibition features 22 UK and international artists, including Francis Alÿs, Sophy Rickett, and Fred Tomaselli, and includes paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and video, some made especially for the show. The exhibition demonstrates how this particular nocturnal hour has captured the imagination of artists. They explore various themes — psychological, sociological, natural and astronomical

to capture something of the strangeness of the night and the extraordinary range of emotions, states and experiences it witnesses. The featured artworks show teenagers running wild and free, a woman’s rapture at the cosmos, a man quite alone and afraid, the steely imaginings of a frightened child, and an emboldened fox. A 100-page anthology for insomniacs, featuring contemporary and historic night-related material and illustrations of artworks has been produced to accompany the exhibition and is available for purchase from the Gallery and Box Office. 3 AM is a Bluecoat touring exhibition.

The Fall of the House of Usher UK/1928/63mins/12A. Dir: Jean Epstein. With: Jean Debuocourt, Marguerite Gance.

Director Jean Epstein and screenwriter Luis Buñuel studiously avoid cheap shocks and opt for a controlled, spookily subtle technique, in this tale of hereditary madness. The hero, having indirectly caused the death of his beloved, stubbornly tries to resurrect her spirit by devoting himself to painting and sculpture. Epstein conveys the twilight zone between life and death with lingering dissolves and brilliant utilization of slow motion. This gothic tale will be accompanied by a live soundtrack created and performed by Steepways Sound Collective using acoustic instrumentation and processed audio. £12/£10

Dracula at Cardiff Castle Tue 29 Oct

UK/1958/82mins/15. Dir: Terence Fisher. With: Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Melissa Stribling.

Maligned by critics on release, Hammer’s bloodily beautiful Dracula has grown in reputation, as the viscerally erotic allure of the Count was captured, in full colour, as never before. The climatic confrontation between a resolutely upstanding Cushing and the icily magnetic Lee, though much imitated, remains unsurpassed. Restored by the BFI, it includes rediscovered footage banned by the British Board of Film Classification in 1958.

Hotel Transylvania

Night of the Demon at The National Trust’s Tredegar House Wed 30 Oct

UK/1957/95mins/PG. Dir: Jacques Tourneur. With: Dana Andrews, Peggy Cummins, Niall MacGinnis.

Sceptical American psychologist Holden is forced to reconsider his beliefs when genial occultist and children’s entertainer Karswell passes him a cursed parchment. Informed that he will die within four days, Holden races to escape his destiny. Gripping, intelligent, eerily entertaining and chillingly plausible in its depiction of witchcraft, this adaptation from M.R. James’ Casting the Runes was atmospherically directed by the legendary Tourneur (Cat People).

For Those in Peril – NBCQ

Fri 4 — Thu 17 Oct

Fri 11 — Thu 17 Oct

UK/2013/113mins/12A. Dir: Oliver Hirshbiegel. With: Naomi Watts, Naveen Andrews.

UK/2013/92mins/18. Dir: Paul Wright. With: George MacKay, Kate Dickie, Nichola Burley, Michael Smiley.

During the last two years of her life, Princess Diana embarked on a secret relationship with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan and it was during this time that she accomplished some of her most rewarding and successful humanitarian work. This film explores a time that was, for both Diana and the nation, uniquely important, as she fulfilled her search for true happiness and sealed her legacy as the People’s Princess.

Aaron is the lone survivor of a fishing trip that claimed the lives of five men, including his older brother, Michael. Unable to remember the details of their trip, and feeling the weight of the community’s collective grief, Aaron’s sense of helplessness escalates into the belief that Michael and the other men somehow survived. Beautifully shot and sensitively performed, Paul Wright’s folkloric film imaginatively explores love and loss.

Hannah Arendt Fri 4 — Thu 17 Oct Germany/2013/113mins/subtitles/12A. Dir: Margareth Von Trotta. With: Axel Milberg, Barbara Sukowa.

Reporting for The New Yorker on the war crimes trial of the Nazi Adolf Eichmann, political theorist Hannah Arendt’s controversial book around the trial, The Banality of Evil, was widely misunderstood at the time as defending Eichmann and blaming Jewish leaders for the Holocaust. This film explores that time in the extraordinary life of a woman who eschewed the title of philosopher, concerning herself that it is “men, not Man, [who] live on earth and inhabit the world.”

+ Q&A date to be confirmed.

Le Week-End Fri 18 — Wed 30 Oct UK/2013/93mins/15. Dir: Roger Michell. With: Jim Broadbent, Lindsay Duncan, Jeff Goldblum.

Attempting to rediscover some romance in their longlived marriage, Nick and Meg head off on a mini-break to Paris and enjoy food, wine and occasionally each other. As long-established tensions in their marriage arise, they often break out in humorous and painful ways. This is a charming, and often funny tale which marks the third feature collaboration between director Roger Michell (Notting Hill) and screenwriter Hanif Kureishi (The Buddha of Suburbia).

Blue Jasmine

The Selfish Giant

Fri 18 — Thu 31 Oct

Fri 25 Oct - Thu 7 Nov

USA/2013/98mins/12A. Dir: Woody Allen. With: Alec Baldwin, Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins, Louis C K.

UK/2013/91mins/15. Dir: Clio Barnard. With: Conner Chapman, Sean Thomas, Sean Gilder.

After her life falls to pieces, including her marriage to wealthy businessman Hal, elegant New York socialite Jasmine moves into the gritty claustrophobia of her sister Ginger’s modest apartment in San Francisco to try to pull herself back together again. With Blanchett clearly having fun as a neurotic and flinty, Xanaxpopping Jasmine, Allen’s latest offering embraces the humour in the tragedy and has been receiving widespread critical acclaim.

Barnard’s second feature after The Arbor takes us back to West Yorkshire, depicting a fictional contemporary fable about 13 year old Arbor and his best friend Swifty. Outsiders in their own neighbourhood, they meet Kitten, a local scrap dealer — the Selfish Giant. Collecting scrap metal for him using a horse and cart, Swifty has a natural gift with horses and is quickly used as a driver for illegal harness races excluding Arbor from this newly found haven.

Blackfish Fri 25 — Wed 30 Oct USA/2013/90mins/15. Dir: Briela Cowperthwaite.

Performing orca Tilikum has killed several people whilst in captivity. Shocking footage and interviews from the staff explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment and pressures from the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry. This emotionally wrenching story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals. A mesmerizing psychological thriller with a killer whale at its centre, this is the first film since Grizzly Man to show how nature can get revenge on man when pushed to its limits.

Fri 4 — Thu 17 Oct

Sun 13 Oct 7pm

USA/2013/122mins/15. Dir: Ron Howard. With: Chris Helmsworth, Daniel Bruhl, Olivia Wilde, Natalie Dormer.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on the 24th of March 2013, Vicki Butler-Henderson describes how James Hunt took on Formula One world champion Niki Lauda, a man who by the August of 1976 would be fighting for his life in a German hospital.

Formula One in the 1970s was an exhilarating and dangerous sport and was dominated in 1976 by two names; the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and disciplined Austrian perfectionist, Niki Lauda. Their clashes on the racetrack epitomised the contrast between the two men, with rivalry pushing them to the ends of physical and psychological endurance. With impressively shot race sequences and incredible central performances, these extraordinary men’s lives are richly explored. With an introduction from broadcast journalist James W Roberts on his experience of making Hunt/Lauda on Tue 8 Oct.

Am I the One Who I Am?

Lithuania’s Top Dance Company:

Aura Dance Am I the One Who I Am? Tue 15 Oct 8pm Am I the one who I am? Am I something made of the rules of society or something that has grown in time as my own personal identity? Who am I? The mouse, that spins in a circle of domestic interests? A mouse, that runs looking for its “cheese“? A computer mouse, which steals time? Or the office chair, evolving into a piece of art? Amidst culturally established stereotypes and traditional gender roles, individual identity persists, constantly obeying the rules of the material world and leaving its footprints in our personality.

Choreographer Birute Letukaite uses the language of dance to enter the world of art-objects by Almyra Bartkeviciute-Weigel. Reflecting on personal and social image and identity, they consider technological inventions as they evolve and rapidly invade contemporary society. The performance aims to build bridges between the individual body, society and technology, destroying the imagined line between private and public through the gaze of passers-by, passing cars, people in the bar. Dirty Protest in partnership with Chapter present

Parallel Lines by Katherine Chandler Steph is 15 years old. Simon is her teacher. Both live in Cardiff but their parallel lives couldn’t be more different. When an accusation is made and their worlds collide, things aren’t as simple as they might seem. Award-winning playwright Katherine Chandler explores truth, class and power in contemporary Wales in this gripping, uncompromising play, directed by Catherine Paskell. Premiere of the 2012 Wales Drama Award winning play. Dirty Protest is Wales’ national new writing fringe company. Projects in 2013 include a summer tour of new plays to the Almeida Theatre, the Royal Court Theatre and Latitude Festival, and Dirty, Gifted and Welsh, a festival of new writing with National Theatre Wales. Launched in 2007, Dirty Protest has worked with more than 100 Welsh writers, staging sell-out plays in venues from pubs and clubs, to kebab shops, hairdressers and a forest.

Supported by the Arts Council of Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government through the National Lottery. The Wales Drama Award is supported by BBC, National Theatre Wales and BBC Writersroom. £12/£10 www.dirtyprotesttheatre.co.uk

Sue: The Second Coming by Dafydd James and Ben Lewis Tue 3 — Sat 7 Dec 8pm

Sue Timms, the piano-wielding prophet, is back. This time, the Total Theatre Award winner invites you into her lounge to participate in a very special nativity. Enjoy carols, sip eggnog and, if you’re lucky, you might just witness the birth of a new Messiah… With virtuosic piano skills, a soaring falsetto and her faithful backing band, she’ll let rip with her dazzlingly unique blend of comedy, music and theatre. In the award winning cult hit, ‘My Name is Sue’, Sue sang about her life from finishing school to Doomsday. Now, offering an anarchic, dark, yet touching alternative to the traditional Yuletide show, she’s got a few things she’d like to get off her chest about Christmas. Supported by The Arts Council of Wales, Chapter and Bristol Ferment. £14/£12

“An exciting and original piece of work that boasts a laugh rate that would be the envy of most stand ups.” The Guardian on My Name is Sue

Out of the Blue

Tue 3 — Fri 13 Dec Two shows each day, see calendar for times An enchanting, intimate performance for babies / toddlers aged 6 –18 months (and their grown-ups). He’s waiting. Waiting for something to arrive. Ding, dong, doorbell. “Package for you.” A parcel. Unwrap it … “What’s inside?” And there’s paper to play with — scrunch, crunch, tear, rip, rustle. Hiding… “Peekaboo!” And then, one day, out of the blue, a wonderful surprise — the most special delivery of all… A perfect introduction to live theatre — full of captivating images and intriguing sounds — followed by an opportunity for the children to play too! Created with the support of Small Size (the European Network for the diffusion of performing arts for early years) and Culture 2000. £6/£4

“My son (10 months) was spellbound from start to finish! His face was full of amazement for the whole 25 minutes, as were the faces of his friends.” Audience feedback

Nick Hennessey and Serious Kitchen The Whispering Road Tue 10 Dec 8pm A night of sublime music and fantastic storytelling, as one of the UK’s leading musical storytellers, Nick Hennessey re-joins Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer from traditional music group Serious Kitchen to create a brand new show. Drawing on the rich heritage of Scandinavian myth and music, the evening combines Hennessey’s spellbinding storytelling with Swan and Dyer’s dazzling skills on a variety of Swedish folk instruments, including the ethereal, otherworldly sound of the nyckelharpa. By turns tender and hilarious, The Whispering Road tells two entwined Scandinavian stories of hope in the darkness, of two strangers bound by a ring, and of the one who could not love. There are of course Trolls. £10/£8

“A compelling demonstration of storytelling’s many faces.” The Times

Sat 14 Dec 8pm Edward Aczel — “Britain’s greatest living anticomedian” (The Guardian) is now talking big about quitting showbiz (by mutual consent). As seen/heard on Radio 4’s Loose Ends, Channel 4 and Sky Arts. Malcolm Hardee Comic Originality Award Winner. For ages 16+ £8/£7/£6

+ Brothers + The Ukelaliens Fri 20 Dec 8pm Following the success of their sell-out ‘comeback’ gig last year, Cardiff’s pre-Cool Cymru kings, The Third Uncles return with a special Christmas show which promises to smoulder and blaze like a paraffindoused Yuletide log. NME said they produced ‘songs with a hint of vengeance’ whilst Record Collector this year gave their ‘Anthology’ CD a four star review calling them ‘enthralling, gripping and smouldering’. The band have been encouraged to record and they may be persuaded to premiere some of the new songs in this year’s extravaganza! The show will also feature those crazy people The Ukelaliens who promise wild renditions of rock and pop classics in a way you’ve never experienced them before, and a scorching set from Brothers — a young and highly-touted Cardiff based quintet who were this year championed by NME and BBC Introducing. This will be an evening not to be missed! £8 in advance / £10 on the door

An adult only Christmas Review Beauty and the Beasts Mon 16 - Wed 18 Dec 8pm “Beauty and the Beasts” is a satirical, irreverent and gloriously democratic take on the year’s great events and the warped and twisted personalities that shaped them. Margaret Thatcher was buried, or was that resurrected? The nation rejoiced when Kate Middleton found a new way to part her hair. Nigel Farage had the Tory party spitting into Cameron’s Eton Mess. We demonstrated our belief in democracy by backing a military coup in Egypt and as we go to press Parliament is discussing bombing Syria. This was the year Gareth Bale left Whitchurch, Andy Murray almost smiled and Sir Alex Ferguson actually did. As for our energy policy, don’t even get us fracking started! If you have an idea for a song or a sketch then this is your chance. Contact us at www.shocknawe.org and get involved! £12/£10/£8

By discussing how she handled her highly unusual position, Angela will raise questions about how — and whether — women’s business lives have changed fundamentally. Laurentiu Florea Head of Food and Beverage Chapter is a progressive, multi-platform Arts Centre and a very important community hub — as such, when given the opportunity, I was immensely excited about joining an already fantastic team. I started off working with food when I was around 15, working nights making and selling bread. The owner of the shop also had a restaurant, where I became first a bartender and took my first steps in being formally trained in hospitality. I fell in love with it instantly, and I’ve since worked as a restaurant manager in the USA and at two of the best hotels in Wales. My vision is to support the Arts through becoming an increasingly recognised dining destination in Cardiff and South Wales by providing an excellent Food & Beverage offering. The emphasis is to offer simple, easy to understand dishes, using seasonal, local produce in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, as well as being involved in and supporting the local community.

Oktoberfest

Pop Up Produce

Wed 23 — Sat 26 Oct

Every Wednesday 4 — 7pm

Our German beer guy Klaus has been busy sourcing some exceptional brews for our Oktoberfest this year. From his list of 247 different beers (!), we have handpicked only the best from over a dozen breweries. Almost all the beers are new to Chapter, with breweries as small and obscure as Brauerei Herrmann (located in a Bavarian village tavern) represented. This year, we want to go all out to make our festival as authentic as possible, so look out for a delicious range of traditional German market snacks to accompany our beer range, and we will be decorating the main concourse to give it a bierkellar vibe. We’ve also added an extra day to the festival, to give you even more time to enjoy a slice of Teutonic life!

Our regular pop up market features local food producers selling scrumptious artisan foods. Charcutier Ltd. bring the best of British, southern European and North American cured and smoked meats, and The Parsnipship produce and sell unique and original vegetarian and vegan food using locally sourced seasonal ingredients.

Festive Food Fair Sun 15 Dec 11 — 6pm Following last year’s hugely successful Festive Food Fair, Chapter and Green City Events are doing it again, and showcasing the best of local welsh produce. Stock up on Christmas foodie treats and stocking fillers, gorgeous chocs, tasty cheese, delicious meats and something special from the caffi bar. Green City events will be hosting family friendly workshops and activities throughout the day.

Hire We have a number of spaces and facilities for hire at Chapter, many of which are booked regularly by an eclectic mix of day and evening classes. Check out our website or pick up a leaflet at the box office to see what’s on offer. And if you’re looking for a room for a party, meeting, conference, video shoot, rehearsal or team building extravaganza, then our great facilities, technical know-how and friendly staff will help you to create a comfortable, distinctive and memorable event. Our café manager is also able to supply a variety of catering options for your event. If you have any hires queries or would like more information, give our hires manager Nicky a ring on 029 2031 1050/58 or email nicky.keeping@chapter.org
