welcome Chapter is an international arts venue known for making things happen. We’re about arts and audiences and creating artistic and social spaces that make a difference to how we think, who we are and what we want to become. We relish change and risk. We love space just to enjoy. We’re a meeting place for ideas, for inspiration, for innovation. We’re also a place where you can sit and chat, feel at home and feel welcome.

Andy Eagle Director A big thank you to Renault Cardiff who are supporting our green agenda with their generous sponsorship of a 100% electric Kangoo van. Renault Cardiff are one of many sponsors, funders, foundations and individuals who help us meet the gap between the 70% of income we earn ourselves and the amount we need to produce, present and promote the 1000s of events we offer each year.

Mark Perris Volunteer Usher I’m really excited to see Barbara (p21), as I love Berlin as a city and am really interested in the history and stories surrounding the east and west of old Berlin. THE FUTURE’S NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE Vernon Ah Kee, Tony Albert, Darren Almond, Matt Bryans, Susan Hiller, Jeremy Millar, Patricia Piccinini, Marjetica Potrč, Amie Siegel, Monika Sosnowska Curated by Deborah Smith Fri 21 September — Sun 4 November Our latest exhibition features ten international artists exploring the concepts of past, present and future. Using a range of media, the artists present multiple perspectives of their changing landscape, encouraging us to define and redefine our own relationships to the world. Susan Hiller, Vernon Ah Kee and Tony Albert give voice to indigenous cultures in the hope that we learn from the past; Marjetica Portč and Monika Sosnowska’s architectural and sculptural works investigate the poetics and politics of space; Amie Siegel and Jeremy Millar explore how events in history resonate with our understanding and experience of the present; Patricia Piccinini engages us with the changing nature of our environment; Darren Almond and Matt Bryans mark, manipulate and erase time. This exhibition has been supported by the Henry Moore Foundation and Queensland Government through the Indigenous Arts Marketing and Export Agency (QIAMEA). Additional sponsorship has been provided by GB-Sol and City Satellite.

Hannah Firth Head of Visual & Live Arts We’re pleased to have been included as one of the key venues for Cardiff Contemporary - a city-wide initiative that showcases the wealth of visual art and design activity that Cardiff has to offer. Vernon Ah Kee: theendoflivingandthe beginningofsurvival

Tooth & Clawr

In 1854 the United States government offered to ‘buy’ a large area of Indian land; in return they promised a ‘reservation’ for the Indian people. Vernon Ah Kee’s light box commission references Chief Seattle’s profound response to this offer. His work also comments on the social and political inequalities that continue to confront Australia’s indigenous people today. Vernon Ah Kee was born in 1967 in Innisfail, Queensland, and is of the Kuku Yalandji, Waanji, Yidinji and Gugu Yimithirr peoples. He now lives and works in Brisbane. Ah Kee’s work is primarily a critique of Australian popular culture, specifically the Black/ White dichotomy. Commissioned as part of The Future’s Not What It Used To Be (see p5).

Phil Collins This Unfortunate Thing Between Us Sat 6 October — Sun 13 January Outside our entrance two second–hand caravans are hosting the UK premiere of Phil Collins’ video installation based on his recent eponymous performance. Originally presented in 2011 at the Hebbel am Ufer theatre in Berlin and on German public television, This Unfortunate Thing Between Us consists of two live broadcasts. Hosted by a crew of actors and porn workers, and featuring live music by Gruff Rhys and Y Niwl, This Unfortunate Thing Between Us follows the logic and grammar of the teleshopping channel, including pitches, sales and phone–ins. Instead of commodities, viewers are offered a choice of experiences at promotional prices. Providing an opportunity to face up to our contemporary desires and fears, TUTBU TV brings together a live audience and home viewers for a glimpse of what may well prove to be the future of consumerism. Phil Collins’ films, photographs, installations, and live events often use elements of low–budget television and the entertainment industry to dissect the political and aesthetic implications of popular visual formats. His collaborators have ranged from former teachers of Marxism in the GDR and anti–fascist skinheads in Malaysia, to fans of The Smiths that span three continents and disco–dancing Palestinians. Presented at Chapter as part of Artes Mundi 5. For more information about Artes Mundi, the shortlisted artists or the exhibition at National Museum Cardiff visit www.artesmundi.org

Biography Phil Collins is based in Berlin and Cologne, where he is a professor of video art at the Kunsthochschule für Medien. Recent solo exhibitions include Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane (2012); British Film Institute, London (2011); Tramway, Glasgow (2009). Group exhibitions include Revolution vs. Revolution, Beirut Art Center and Hors Pistes 2012, Centre Pompidou, Paris (both 2012); Museum der Wünsche, MUMOK, Vienna; Berlin 2000-20011, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo; and Ostalgia, New Museum, New York (all 2011); as well as biennales in Singapore (2011), Berlin (2010), Turner Prize (2006) and Istanbul (2005). Collins’ films have been shown at international film festivals, including Rotterdam, Oberhausen, and Berlin. His works are held in significant public collections such as, among others, Tate, London; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.

Open: Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 12-6pm; Thursday & Friday 12-8pm; closed Monday

THEATRE “The humour, the creativity, the imagination… I loved it” audience feedback (Teifi Emerald)

Recent investment in satellite broadcast technology in our cinema has opened the door to a whole raft of exciting opportunities. One of these is the screening of National Theatre Live (see p15) where you become part of the live theatre experience on London’s South Bank. It’s a thrilling new medium and one that I’m delighted Chapter is able to be a part of. Enjoy!

This funny, magical, one-of-a-kind performance merges elements of stand-up, physical theatre, storytelling, song and dance, puppetry, parody and the absurd. £9/£7/£6 www.teifiemerald.net

Cardiff Design Festival Fri 28 Sept — Sat 13 Oct

This annual celebration of the skills and passion of our city’s designers provides a spotlight on the sector and shows how design affects every aspect of our lives. See p17 for details of a film about designers Charles and Ray Eames. For the full festival schedule at venues around Cardiff go to www.cardiffdesignfestival.org.

Mon 1 Oct 8pm

What is design? Is the concept tied too closely to notions of form and function, of producing smart, novel things? Does it lead to the big ethical questions of how to live well, or how we ought to live, questions which it is unreasonable to expect any one designer to answer. Join Clive Cazeaux, Professor of Aesthetics at Cardiff School of Art and Design, for an evening of pub philosophy discussion in our Caffi Bar.

PechaKucha Night Cardiff Tue 2 Oct 6.30pm

Trapped in a loveless marriage to a government official, Anna falls passionately in love with the young Vronsky, setting in motion a chain of events that leads to her downfall. Lawless

Fri 21 Sept — Thu 4 Oct

USA/2012/115mins/18. Dir: John Hillcoat. With Tom Hardy, Jason Clarke, Jessica Chastain.

Ping Pong

Fri 28 Sept — Thu 4 Oct

UK/2012/80mins/PG. Dir: Hugh and Anson Hartford. With Les D’Arcy, Terry Donlon, Lisa Modlich.

89-year-old Les D’Arcy is headed to Inner Mongolia to compete in the over 80s Table Tennis Championships. But he’s considered a spring chicken by others at the tournament, including 100 year old Dorothy DeLow, a mega celebrity in this rarefied world. The film is as much about the tenacity of the human spirit as it is about taking home the medal, with intimate and candid portraits of life back home exploring the hope, regret and immediacy of growing old.

Fri 28 Sept — Thu 4 Oct

USA/2012/84mins/12A. Dir: Jason Cohn, Bill Jersey. Narrated by James Franco.

The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames are widely regarded as America’s most important designers. Perhaps best remembered for their mid-century plywood and fiberglass furniture, the Eames Office also created a mind-bending variety of other products, from splints for wounded military during World War II, to photography, interiors, graphics, games, films and toys. This documentary also takes a look at their personal lives and influence on significant events in American life.

Nicko and Joe lend their irreverent live commentary to another classic from their terrible movie vault. You remember Mick Dundee, the guy who hunts crocodiles and has a big knife? Well now he’s in LA! And he’s taken along very little of the drama and not much of the comedy of his original film.

Hysteria Fri 5 — Thu 18 Oct

UK/2012/99mins/15. Dir: Tanya Wexler. With Hugh Dancy, Jonathan Pryce, Maggie Gyllenhall.

Looking for a cure for what was commonly described as hysteria in women, late 19th century physician Mortimer Granville set about creating the world’s first electromechanical vibrator — all in the name of medical science. This breezy and often cheeky comedy sets the notion of the doctor’s blissful ‘cure’ against the ideals of Gyllenhall’s Suffragette who believes the true path to women’s happiness lies in education and self-sufficiency.

Part documentary, part stylized visualisation, this chilling film chronicles the story of a 13-year-old boy who disappears from Texas in 1994 and is found three years later in southern Spain with a story of kidnapping and torture. His family is overjoyed to bring him home, but all is not quite as it seems. Why does he now have a strange accent? Why does he look so different? Any why doesn’t the family seem to notice these glaring inconsistencies? It’s only when an investigator starts asking questions that this strange tale takes an even stranger turn.

Keyhole

Fri 12 — Thu 18 Oct

Canada/2012/94mins/ctba. Dir: Guy Maddin. With Isabella Rossellini, Jason Patric, Udo Kier.

After a long absence, Ulysses Pick arrives home to a house haunted with memories, towing the body of a teenage girl and a bound and gagged young man. His gang waits inside and there’s friction in the ranks. But Ulysses is focused on one thing: journeying through the house, room by room, and reaching his wife Hyacinth in her bedroom. Master of the peculiar and darkly humorous, Guy Maddin’s beautiful fever dream is a compelling watch.

My Winnipeg

Sun 14 + Tue 16 Oct

Canada/2007/80mins/12A. Dir: Guy Maddin. With Darcy Fehr, Ann Savage, Amy Stewart.

Have you ever wanted to relive your childhood and do things differently? B-movie icon Ann Savage plays a domineering mother attempting to answer that question. Maddin’s strange and profoundly touching goodbye letter to his childhood hometown is an inventive blend of local and personal history, surrealist images and metaphorical myths.

The Saddest Music in The World Sun 21 + Tue 23 Oct

Canada/2003/100mins/15. Dir: Guy Maddin. With Isabella Rossellini, Mark McKinney, Maria de Medeiros.

During the Great Depression, Winnipeg is declared ‘the world capital of sorrow’ so the glamorous local brewer, double-amputee Lady Port-Huntly, sets a contest to find the saddest music in the world. Featuring a screenplay by Kazuo Ishiguro, Maddin’s beguiling and hallucinatory black-and-white musical delves into a past that never was.

Dracula: Pages From A Virgin’s Diary Sun 28 + Tue 30 Oct

Canada/2004/73mins/12A. Dir: Guy Maddin. With Wei-Qiang Zhang, Brent Neale, Cindy Marie Small.

Maddin’s sumptuous feast of dance, drama and shadow transposes Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s interpretation of Bram Stoker’s classic vampire yarn from stage to screen. The tale of the sinister but intriguing immigrant who preys on young English women is presented in a style reminiscent of the silent expressionistic cinema of the early 20th Century.

Keyhole (top), Dracula (bottom)

From ballet-filled takes on the Dracula story to pseudo-autobiographical tales of growing up in Winnipeg, Guy Maddin’s unique style can thrill, amuse and perplex. We’re celebrating the release of his latest surreal, black and white melodrama Keyhole, with this short season.

Killing Them Softly Fri 19 Oct — Thu 1 Nov

USA/2012/97mins/18. Dir: Andrew Dominik. With Brad Pitt, Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini.

This down-and-dirty thriller unfolds in post-hurricane New Orleans, a city in pieces, caught in the midst of a recession-induced crime wave. Two dreamy, low ranking gangsters bite off more than they can chew when they take on a mob boss and find two hired killers on their tail. This fast-paced and darkly comic drama shows a morally bankrupt society dripping with corruption and hypocrisy from the top down. A grimy, third film from writer-director Dominik teams him once again with Assassination of Jesse James actor Brad Pitt, offering him a deliciously wicked career-defining role.

With the proliferation of gay films over the past three decades, can we see a change in how gay humour is presented on the screen? Chaired by Andrew White of Stonewall Cymru, this session takes a light-hearted look at gay humour on screen.

The older Elliot is less prepared for life and is unsuccessful in looking for love as it seems all the good men are taken. The Upsetter: The Life And Music of Lee Scratch Perry Fri 19 Oct

USA/2008/95mins/ctba. Dir: Ethan Higbee, Adam Bhala Lough. Narrated by Benicio Del Toro.

Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry helped to invent a genre of music in the 1950s that would come to be called Reggae and Dub. He mentored a young Bob Marley, worked with Paul McCartney and the Clash and gained international recognition as an experimental solo artist and producer. Despite the gang warfare back home, the ensuing extortion, a marriage break up, alcohol and drug addiction and his studio burning to the ground, Scratch remained a key figure in music and returned at the age of 70 for a world tour. A fascinating study of one man, and an entire music scene.
