THE FUTURE’S NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE Vernon Ah Kee, Tony Albert, Darren Almond, Matt Bryans, Susan Hiller, Jeremy Millar, Patricia Piccinini, Marjetica Potrč, Amie Siegel, Monika Sosnowska Curated by Deborah Smith Fri 21 September — Sun 4 November Our latest exhibition features ten international artists exploring the concepts of past, present and future. Using a range of media, the artists present multiple perspectives of their changing landscape, encouraging us to define and redefine our own relationships to the world. Susan Hiller, Vernon Ah Kee and Tony Albert give voice to indigenous cultures in the hope that we learn from the past; Marjetica Portč and Monika Sosnowska’s architectural and sculptural works investigate the poetics and politics of space; Amie Siegel and Jeremy Millar explore how events in history resonate with our understanding and experience of the present; Patricia Piccinini engages us with the changing nature of our environment; Darren Almond and Matt Bryans mark, manipulate and erase time. This exhibition has been supported by the Henry Moore Foundation and Queensland Government through the Indigenous Arts Marketing and Export Agency (QIAMEA). Vernon Ah Kee: theendoflivingandthe beginningofsurvival
Tooth & Clawr
In 1854 the United States government offered to ‘buy’ a large area of Indian land; in return they promised a ‘reservation’ for the Indian people. Vernon Ah Kee’s light box commission references Chief Seattle’s profound response to this offer. His work also comments on the social and political inequalities that continue to confront Australia’s indigenous people today. Vernon Ah Kee was born in 1967 in Innisfail, Queensland, and is of the Kuku Yalandji, Waanji, Yidinji and Gugu Yimithirr peoples. He now lives and works in Brisbane. Ah Kee’s work is primarily a critique of Australian popular culture, specifically the Black/ White dichotomy. Commissioned as part of The Future’s Not What It Used To Be (see p5).

The group looks at reading material from a wide variety of sources — fictional, theoretical and tangential. Phil Collins This Unfortunate Thing Between Us Sat 6 October — Sun 13 January Outside our entrance two second–hand caravans are hosting the UK premiere of Phil Collins’ video installation based on his recent eponymous performance. Originally presented in 2011 at the Hebbel am Ufer theatre in Berlin and on German public television, This Unfortunate Thing Between Us consists of two live broadcasts. Hosted by a crew of actors and porn workers, and featuring live music by Gruff Rhys and Y Niwl, This Unfortunate Thing Between Us follows the logic and grammar of the teleshopping channel, including pitches, sales and phone–ins. Instead of commodities, viewers are offered a choice of experiences at promotional prices. Providing an opportunity to face up to our contemporary desires and fears, TUTBU TV brings together a live audience and home viewers for a glimpse of what may well prove to be the future of consumerism. Phil Collins’ films, photographs, installations, and live events often use elements of low–budget television and the entertainment industry to dissect the political and aesthetic implications of popular visual formats. His collaborators have ranged from former teachers of Marxism in the GDR and anti–fascist skinheads in Malaysia, to fans of The Smiths that span three continents and disco–dancing Palestinians. Biography Phil Collins is based in Berlin and Cologne, where he is a professor of video art at the Kunsthochschule für Medien. Recent solo exhibitions include Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane (2012); British Film Institute, London (2011); Tramway, Glasgow (2009). Group exhibitions include Revolution vs. Revolution, Beirut Art Center and Hors Pistes 2012, Centre Pompidou, Paris (both 2012); Museum der Wünsche, MUMOK, Vienna; Berlin 2000-20011, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo; and Ostalgia, New Museum, New York (all 2011); as well as biennales in Singapore (2011), Berlin (2010), Turner Prize (2006) and Istanbul (2005). Collins’ films have been shown at international film festivals, including Rotterdam, Oberhausen, and Berlin. His works are held in significant public collections such as, among others, Tate, London; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.

Recent investment in satellite broadcast technology in our cinema has opened the door to a whole raft of exciting opportunities. His ship was mistaken for a troop ship and attacked by a German U-boat, with many innocent Welsh-Italian men losing their lives. Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry helped to invent a genre of music in the 1950s that would come to be called Reggae and Dub. Despite the gang warfare back home, the ensuing extortion, a marriage break up, alcohol and drug addiction and his studio burning to the ground, Scratch remained a key figure in music and returned at the age of 70 for a world tour. A fascinating study of one man, and an entire music scene.

Carry On Screaming!
Every Friday at 11am, Carry on Screaming allows parents or carers to see a film without having to worry about their baby causing a disturbance. Check out the calendar for details of these special screenings, exclusively for people with babies under one-year-old. Free entry for babies. Please note that tickets for these screenings are not available online. Sorry, strictly no admittance unless accompanied by a baby!

Our regular pop up market features local food producers selling scrumptious artisan foods. Mark’s Bread continue to offer a host of your favourite loaves and speciality breads like potato and rosemary sourdough or raisin and caraway. Oktoberfest 2012 Thu 25 — Sat 27 Oct
For this year’s Oktoberfest Beer Festival we’re bringing you an entirely new selection of hoppy beverages from Germany. Dave, our Bar Manager, has sought out (sampled) a wide range of the best lagers, pilsners, dark and wheat beers from across the country to delight and surprise you. You won’t find your old favourites on our list, but we’re certain you’ll discover a new one amongst the treats on offer. How about Schlöbberla, a dark land beer completely new even in Germany; or Mårzen, a woody smoked taste sensation? Our mouths have already started watering in anticipation! Our talented chefs are pulling out all the stops too, offering a selection of Chapter-made festival fare like Welsh beef or 3 bean chilli with rice, sour cream and nachos; Bockwurst or vegan hotdogs with homemade curry ketchup and sauerkraut; Welsh beef burger with fries and coleslaw; or falafel burger with fries and Moroccan coleslaw. Plenty to get your teeth into. Our normal Caffi Bar menu runs until 5pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Festival menu 5pm– 9pm. Sample some of the produce grown in our community garden, from chutneys, soups and cakes to the honey from our Chapter bees. Tom Bean of ‘Blas o’r Tan’ will be demonstrating his earth oven and giving you the chance to make some flat breads.
Hires We have a number of spaces and facilities for hire at Chapter, many of which are booked regularly by an eclectic mix of day and evening classes. Check out our website or pick up a leaflet at the box office to see what’s on offer. And if you’re looking for a room for a party, meeting, conference, video shoot, rehearsal or team building extravaganza then our state-of-the-art facilities, technical know-how and friendly staff will help you to create a comfortable, distinctive and memorable event. Our café manager Lex is also able to supply a variety of catering options for your event. Last year we welcomed 800,000 visitors to 12 exhibitions, almost 2,000 cinema screenings, over 600 theatre performances and 1,000s more to workshops and classes, talks and other events. Behind the scenes we also supported 100s of projects by providing space and advice. We are proud that we earn over 70% of the money we need to make this happen ourselves through our box office, café-bar sales and space hires. Support from funders, trusts, foundations and sponsors helps us meet the gap but as a registered charity we also rely on the support of 100s of individuals making small donations.
