Welcome

With the nights drawing in and the crunching of leaves underfoot, autumn, our favourite season, is here in all its glory. Chapter is a hive of activity this October as is the wider city; we’ll be taking part in Cardiff Contemporary, a festival of contemporary visual culture, with a playful and somewhat delicious artwork (p6-7), and we’re thrilled to be a partner venue for the third time for Artes Mundi 7, featuring some of the world’s leading contemporary artists (p4-5). Our cinema takes an equally international perspective this month, with Iris Prize Festival celebrating the best LGBTQ films from around the globe (p24-25) and Watch Africa screening a selection of African films, complete with film workshops (p20-21). The stage is set for November’s Experimentica with Greg Wohead revisiting Elvis Presley’s comeback show, with spectacular results (p9). And that’s only a small fraction of what’s going on! So as always we’re happy that Oktoberfest (p17), our festival of delicious German beer is here and we have a handy excuse to relax at the bar after a busy day in the office. Thanks for reading and see you soon.

Artes Mundi 7 Fri 21 Oct 2016 — Sun 26 Feb 2017 We are delighted to be a partner venue hosting the Artes Mundi 7 exhibition opening this month in Cardiff. This will be the third time that Chapter has collaborated with Artes Mundi, a contemporary arts organisation, best known for its biennial exhibition and prize which features some of the world’s leading contemporary artists. Chapter will present works by internationally acclaimed artists Nástio Mosquito and Lamia Joreige. The exhibition will also extend to the contemporary art wing of National Museum Cardiff. The Artes Mundi 7 shortlist was selected by Élise Atangana, an independent curator based in Paris and Cameroon, Alistair Hudson, Director of Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art and Marie Muracciole, Director of the Beirut Art Centre. The exhibition will feature John Akomfrah, Neïl Beloufa, Amy Franceschini/ Futurefarmers, Lamia Joreige, Nástio Mosquito and Bedwyr Williams. For more information visit www. artesmundi.org

Artes Mundi 7 at Chapter Nástio Mosquito Embracing performance, video, music, poetry, installation, philosophy and digital art, Mosquito’s work bursts forth with fervent energy. Originally rooted in the broadcast industry as a director and cameraman, his practice is both confrontational and deeply witty, expressing an urgent desire to engage with reality at all levels. Nástio Mosquito’s exhibition for Artes Mundi 7 will include a new audiovisual installation entitled Transitory Suppository: Act#I Another Leader (2016). The installation revolves around a unique and absurd solution for a fictional country attempting to overcome its economic problems and transform itself into a world power. The artist takes centre stage, embodying the character of a despotic leader in a darkly humorous and pertinent exhibition.

Caitlin Davies, Curatorial Volunteer I graduated from University in Swansea in July this year and have just been accepted on to a Masters at the University of the West England where I will be studying Curating. The course starts in January and involves a twelve month placement at Chapter but I wanted to get a bit of a head start so I have been working as a Curatorial Volunteer in the Visual Arts department over the last couple of months. I’m enjoying working here and developing friendships with all the different staff, artists and clients. I’m also learning so much about the curatorial role within a gallery and within a large city such as Cardiff. I’m really looking forward to helping out on Artes Mundi 7 and Cardiff Contemporary — not only here at Chapter but all over the city.

Lamia Joreige Lamia Joreige uses archival documents and fictional elements to reflect on the relationship between individual stories and collective history. Her practice is rooted in the possibilities of representation of the Lebanese wars and their aftermath, specifically Beirut, a city at the centre of her imagery. For Artes Mundi 7 the artist will exhibit work at Chapter and National Museum Cardiff. Chapter will host the premiere of the latest work within the ongoing project Under-Writing Beirut — Nahr (The River), 2013-2016, entitled After the River. In this work Joreige investigates the urban areas in and around the river which defines the eastern border of Beirut, inviting a reflection on migration, the process of gentrification, and the notions of borders and landscape in our imaginary. Other elements of Under-Writing Beirut — Nahr will be shown at National Museum Cardiff.

LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME ALONE is a carefully crafted sculpture, as well as the artists’ first permanent building in the United Kingdom. Its inventive and playful design, high quality detailing and distinctiveness as an object has been focused upon to create a very special artwork — a remarkable destination in this newly regenerated part of Cardiff. During Cardiff Contemporary LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME ALONE will also function as a kiosk with a unique food and drink offering for visitors to Cardiff Bay. LMOLMA‘s aim is to provide a nucleus for the community via an array of programming. Each Saturday evening there will be live acoustic music and a special outdoor cinema double-bill on Saturday 29 October. Food and drink by Chapter’s caffi team will be served throughout the week. STUDIO MORISON founders

Heather Peak and Ivan Morison have worked together as an artist duo, under the name Heather and Ivan Morison, since 2003, establishing an ambitious collaborative practice that transcends the divisions between art, architecture and theatre. STUDIO MORISON facilitates their practice and the projects that flow from it. LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME ALONE is commissioned by IGLOO regeneration and EMP Projects in collaboration with Chapter. The Cardiff Contemporary programme is developed by Heather and Ivan Morison and Chapter.

Jam sessions, patter with a Southern drawl, big dance numbers, and a bit of sweat: this is a re-enactment of Elvis Presley’s 1968 Comeback Special. Sort of. It’s an experiment in time drag; wearing another time as drag and dragging another time into the present. What happens if the Comeback comes back? Like a half-remembered dream or two mirrors facing each other or repeating a word so much it loses its meaning. Comeback Special is a double negative. It’s not the original, but it’s not not. Greg welcomes Elvis fans, theatre fans and anyone who thinks this peculiar re-enactment might be fun. He certainly does. Greg Wohead is a writer, performer and live artist who makes theatre performances, one-to-one pieces and audio work internationally.

CURATED BY THEATR IOLO

Christopher Brett Bailey Kissing the Shotgun Goodnight Wed 2 + Thu 3 Nov 8pm A neo-noir fever dream and a 120 decibel suicide note. A gleeful howl from the armpits of hell, Bailey’s words deliver a linguistic kaleidoscope of caustic cartoons, crackpot prophesies and demented erotica. A panorama of humanity in tatters, of a diseased society at war with itself, blown-out, bloated and tumbling towards a million nauseating climaxes. By turns gruesome and euphoric, snotty and psychotic. A giddy cocktail of impotent violence and frantic, frantic sex. An auto-destructive shaggy dog story, a nocturnal meditation crooned into the swollen abyss, and a radical No! to life. A dense, poetic blend of the hallucinogenic and the hardboiled, all set to a warped collision of haunting musics and ear-popping noise. A sumptuous, cinematic melting pot of psycho-acoustic trickery, futurist soundscaping and dark psychedelia. Recommended for those with an aural fixation. No kids. No dogs. £12/£10 Age 16+ Commissioned by Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, Cambridge Junction, Ovalhouse, Theatre in the Mill, and Theatr Iolo. Supported by Arts Council England. Tim Bromage and guests The Hunter & The Bleak (a collection) The vehicle sat on the red block driveway, squat and sullen. The ritual should have been simple... but there was so much he did not know, he had not observed it for so long, and now fear, coupled with a sense of obligation had led to an unexpected cry for help. After all you heard horror stories, heard of those moments when a vehicle died with no warning, at eighty mile an hour… out on the great tarmac. One moment hurtling forward, and then... nothing. Not a whisper, nor cough. Coasting mockingly to a halt, never to move again” From ‘The Driver’ by Gordon Lang 1945.

Tim Bromage presents a selection of readings from his recently completed poetry collection The Hunter and The Bleak. The performance is informed by a variety of disciplines including music, magic and anecdote. Also drawing inspiration from Greek mythology and in particular the Delphic Oracle, the work explores truth, process and FATE. It’s not all doom and gloom though, along the way there’s alternate realities, some rousing tunes, and the world famous bag and egg trick. £10/£8

USA/2016/118mins/15. Dir: Matt Ross. With: Viggo Mortensten, George McKay, Kathryn Hahn, Frank Langella.

France/2015/102mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Andrzej Zulawski. With: Sabine Azéma, Jean-François Balmer, Jonathan Genet.

Ben lives with his six children in the wilderness, in idyllic seclusion from civilisation, giving them a rigorous education of his own design, until a family crisis forces him to re-enter the world. Exposing his children to a new way of life presents challenges for them all and Ben must reassess his idea of what it means to be a parent. A powerful and thoughtprovoking story of alternative lifestyles with incredible performances.

Having just failed his law-school examinations Witold arrives at a guest-house for a few days away with a friend. There, they are greeted by a series of unsettling hangings. Witold’s reality mutates into a whirlwind of tension, histrionics, foreboding omens and surrealistic logic as he becomes obsessed with Madame Woytis’s newly married daughter Lena. This final film from legendary Polish director Andrzej Zulawski is an ominous and manic exploration of desire.

A man meets a girl, then the girl disappears. This scene is repeated against various periods of history — the male a figure of authority or menace in this highly original and arresting film. Against a haunting score, the story fragments portray an African woman as an object of lust, surveillance, fascination or violence. Fri 14 — Thu 20 Oct

USA/2016/81mins/12A. Dir: Richard Tanne. With: Tika Sumptor, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Parker Sawyers.

USA/2016/139mins/ctba. Dir: Gary Ross. With: Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali.

In the summer of 1989 two bright young lawyers in Chicago went to catch an art exhibit, see a film and have drinks and ice cream. This seemingly unremarkable meeting developed into the first date of Barack Obama and Michelle Robinson, later to become President and First Lady. This charming, well observed romance feels authentic and gives an elegant insight into the most famous couple in America.

In this USA election year it’s fitting that through this film we witness a moment that defined the nation: the Civil War and its lingering consequences. Based on the true story of disillusioned fighter Newt Knight who banded together with other poor farmers and runaway slaves to revolt against the Confederacy. This powerful film with assured performances links economic and racial justice through the vein of American life.
