RACHEL MACLEAN: SPITE YOUR FACE PREVIEW / RHAGOLWG: 19.10.18 EXHIBITION / ARDDANGOSFA: 20.10.18—20.01.19 Commissioned for the Venice Biennale in 2017, Rachel Maclean’s critically-acclaimed ‘Spite Your Face’ travels to Chapter to present her first solo exhibition in Wales. Referencing the Italian folk-tale The Adventures of Pinocchio, ‘Spite Your Face’ (2017) advances a powerful social critique, exploring underlying fears and desires that characterise the contemporary zeitgeist. Set across two worlds — with a glittering, materialistic and celebrity-obsessed upper world, and a dark, dank and impoverished lower world — the lure of wealth and adoration entices a destitute young boy into the shimmering riches of the kingdom above. Written in the wake of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, and during Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, the story is steeped in the political flux and uncertainty of our time. Shown as a perpetual 37-minute loop with no definitive beginning or end, ‘Spite Your Face’ raises issues including the abuse of patriarchal power, capitalist deception, exploitation and the destructive trappings of wealth and fame, all in Maclean’s typically direct and acerbic style. Following the monumental staging of the work for Scotland + Venice in the deconsecrated Chiesa di Santa Caterina in Venice, ‘Spite Your Face’ was reframed for the Georgian Gallery of Talbot Rice in Edinburgh before travelling to Cardiff where we will also present a new commission to accompany the exhibition. Maclean has created a large-scale artwork that will be sited on the lightbox, announcing the arrival of central character, Pic, to visitors and passers-by alike. A text by writer and curator Ellen Mara De Wachter has been commissioned to accompany the exhibition.

Siri wakes to find herself trapped inside a brutalist Barbie Dreamhouse, where she and her inmates are forced to go head-to-head in a series of demeaning tasks. In ‘Make Me Up’, multimedia artist Rachel Maclean has created a world that is both seductive and dangerous; a place where surveillance, violence and submission are a normalised part of daily life. www.makemeupfilm.com ‘Make Me Up’ marks 100 years since women were first given the right to vote in the United Kingdom. Part horror movie, part comedy, ‘Make Me Up’ reflects on the shortcomings of our journey towards equality throughout the past century. The film imagines a dystopian future where a group of women are trapped in a cruel reality TV-style competition in the brutal modernist setting of St Peter’s Seminary. Here, voting is not a liberation — it is a harsh judgement the contestants must face. New arrival Siri learns the rules of a show where compliance and attractiveness are key. Emboldened by her growing friendship with fellow inmate Alexa, Siri finds ways of sabotaging the system and discovers some terrible truths in the process. Cosmic Cat, ‘Make Me Up’ is a major commission for 14-18 NOW and the BBC. ‘Make Me Up’ is part of Represent, a series of artworks inspired by the Representation of the People Act 1918. While the act gave the vote only to women over 30, Represent invites young female artists to explore democracy, equality and inclusion in contemporary Britain. Mae’r newydd-ddyfodiad Siri yn dysgu rheolau’r sioe, lle mae cydymffurfio a bod yn ddeniadol yn hollbwysig. Yn sgil ei chyfeillgarwch datblygol gyda’i chydgarcharor Alexa, mae Siri’n dod o hyd i ffyrdd o danseilio’r system ac yn datgelu ambell wirionedd ofnadwy wrth wneud. Cornelia Baltes’ brightly coloured paintings combine simplicity with humour and playfulness. Real-world observations are stripped back to their simplest form; creating new abstract patterns and rhythms. Their bold graphic qualities often spill out over the surface and on to the walls and surrounding architecture in which they inhabit. For Chapter, Baltes has created a new site-specific work in the bustling Caffi Bar — two giant cartoon hands dangle down from the glass skylights above, their fingers stretching towards the floor whilst another hand protrudes around the smaller wall, claiming the space as their own. Children told they were born from donated eggs or sperm, upon turning 18, are now entitled to know the identity of their donor parent. This show is for anyone who doesn’t like being told what to do and is about finding the courage to defy expectations. They prepare for a performance of Antigone in front of the other inmates and guards — an act of defiance from people who have lost everything... This soaring, award-winning drama draws on the stories that linger from the notorious prison on Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated.
