It doesn’t get bigger (or better) than this… No-one can accuse us of not thinking big and nowhere is that more evident than our commission of a new touring project by the internationally renowned artists Heather & Ivan Morison. For the last few months the Portsmouth and Southsea skyline has been transformed by the spectacular addition of Luna Park, their re-creation of a 16-metre dinosaur. And now it’s time for Southsea to wave goodbye to the giant Ultrasauros — despite an online petition by local residents to make Luna Park permanent — which starts its move to the idyllic location of the boating lake at Castle Park in Colchester. The ‘life-sized’ dinosaur, based on the mythical Ultrasauros unearthed in the 1970s but later found to be made of the bones from two smaller dinosaurs, is one of the biggest off-site projects in our 40 year history. It was built in a small rural village outside the city of Kragujevac in Serbia and the construction team of engineers, welders, assemblers and model makers were all former employees of the Zastava car factory in the city. As the Ultrasauros travels across the UK it is intended as a temporary monument, a marker of time and place, a shelter, a platform for activity and an area in which to congregate. Some of the photos opposite give a glimpse of its time on Southsea Common. A vibrant programme of activity is planned in Colchester– including children’s workshops, film screenings and special evening events for all the family — further information is available from Firstsite who have worked closely with Chapter to commission and develop the project there. www.firstsite.uk.net For those of you who haven’t yet met Ultrasauros you will get your chance in Cardiff in Spring 2011 and you can keep in touch with its journey across the UK on our facebook page — www.facebook.com/chapterarts Luna Park is a Chapter initiative that has been commissioned in collaboration with Safle, Aspex Portsmouth and Firstsite Colchester. It has received additional support from the Arts Council of Wales, The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, King Lifting Ltd and Vale Consultancy.

S Mark Gubb: How Should I Live? (Maybe That’s Not The Question) Fri 1 Oct — Sun 7 Nov • Gwe 1 Hyd — Sul 7 Tach Preview: Fri 30 Sept • 6pm • Gwe 30 Medi Wim Wenders’ film Wings of Desire is a seminal reflection on the nature of humanity, centred on the tension between the heavenly protagonists and their earthly counterparts. Acting as an allegory for some of the big philosophical debates, the film conveys the immediacy of such questions of contemporary existence as life, death, love and faith. S Mark Gubb’s exhibition is also a reflection on the nature of existence. Taking its title from a line in the film, How Should I Live? (Maybe That’s Not The Question) raises questions of personal ambition, belief and values, by asking you to make choices as you navigate your way through the gallery. On the one hand the exhibition is an exploration of a kind of naive utopian ideal in which Gubb explores, amongst other things, the Costa Rican notion of ‘Pura Vida’ or the ‘Good Life’; but this is consistently tempered by his ability to cut across any notions that the journey through life could be without complexity or sacrifice. And so he offers various points of access, allowing engagement with the subject and content in several meaningful ways; pulling different aspects in and out of focus so that the response demanded can also tap into the deeper cultural, political, moral and social decisions that shape us. Biography S Mark Gubb was born in Margate, Kent and studied at the Universities of Derby (BA Fine Art) and Central England (MA Fine Art). Previous exhibitions and projects include Zünderkerze, Matthew Bown Gallery, Berlin; We Have the Mirrors, We Have the Plans, Mostyn, Llandudno; History of a Time to Come, Crate Project Space, Margate (all 2010); My Empire of Dirt, Ceri Hand Gallery, Liverpool; Pura Vida, Hinterland, Nottingham (both 2009); Here Today, Gone Tomorrow, The City Gallery, Leicester (2008); Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere, Castlefield Gallery, Manchester and The Death of Peter Fechter, ICA, London (both 2007). He is currently working on public commissions for Bristol City Council and The Usher Gallery, Lincoln, a solo show at Aspex, Portsmouth early in 2011 and was recently shortlisted to represent Wales at the Venice Biennale in 2011. Mark is introducing a special screening of Wings of Desire in Cinema 2 on Wed 6 Oct — see p25 for details. We have produced a limited edition print to accompany the exhibition. ‘Free For All Forever’ has been printed by Print Market Workshop in Cardiff and is available from The Shop priced at £100 (or you can pay in instalments through the Collectorplan scheme). Film screening & book launch

Maelfa Thu 14 Oct • 6.30pm • Iau 14 Hyd UK/2010/25mins/no cert. Dir: Sean Edwards.

Built around a block of high-rise flats in a council estate in the mid 1970s, the Maelfa Shopping Centre in Llanedeyrn is the focus of artist Sean Edwards’ portrait of a near derelict space. His film focuses on the detritus of daily life and the inevitable failure of human aspirations for greatness. Slow paced and silent, Maelfa touches upon a sense of poignancy associated with disappearing communities and failed utopian aspirations. The screening is accompanied by a book launch of ‘No Dust Adheres’, published by The Bedford Press, London and Safle, Cardiff. Maelfa has been made with the assistance of The Elephant Trust and Safle with the financial assistance of the Arts Council of Wales.

Paul Granjon Black Box Ni Sat 9 Oct • 8pm • Sad 9 Hyd Wearing a special interactive costume, Paul Granjon delivers his most recent performance work focusing on the latest developments of military robotics. However, during the course of his presentation a mysterious electronic black box sends radio-wave commands to the costume, interrupting the smooth flow of his delivery. The performance tackles issues of technological dependence, human adaptation and communication with machines and features a unique mix of funny robots, sad songs and a happy ending. Paul Granjon has been developing his machines for 10 years, from his studio at Chapter. He first made an impression with Cardiff audiences with It Is Not a Piece of Cake during the Cardiff Art in Time Festival in 1995. His robotic solo exhibition Z Lab 2001 was commissioned for Chapter Gallery and toured Wales and beyond, and in 2005 he represented Wales as part of the Venice Biennale. But these narratives never address the role performance art will play in future societies. What kind of work would a performance artist make onboard a spaceship or in a postapocalyptic world? What kind of work would a performance artist make in the UK after ten years of Conservative government, in a climate akin to that of Southern California today? What would a performance for the year 2020 look like? In imagining it, can we actually shape this future? Random People are making opening and closing presentations at Experimentica and their future laboratory is open throughout the week. www.random-people.net

Michelle Horacek Raven

Ruth Jones and Andrea Williams Chwarel

Wed 13 Oct • 8pm • Mer 13 Hyd The symbol of the Raven stands at the threshold between death and rebirth. Horacek’s performance explores the ritual of transformation as she calls the spirit of the Raven into her body and transforms the old into something new.

Thu 14 Oct • 12–2pm • Mer 13 Hyd This collaborative audiovisual installation focuses on the disused Porthgain granite quarry in Pembrokeshire. Shot in 16mm from a fixed position the camera slowly rotates in a continual 360 degree panorama in which events take place that evoke both the present uses of the quarry, and recall its past. Traces of the history of the site are visible in the hewed rock and in the remains of the brick buildings that formed part of the working operation. By paying attention to the minutiae of sounds, and our ability to construct meaning from acoustic events even when we don’t see their source, a sense of place is generated – suspended between the past and the present.

Noel James Godzelvis Thu 14 Oct • 7pm • Iau 14 Hyd What is the difference between a comedy act and performance art? Conceptual art and ‘the joke’ often embrace language. The background to Noel’s elaborate wordplay and absurdist routines is more working class social club than situationist cabaret. His comedy absorbs many influences, from Yoko Ono to horror films from the 1950s.

Jess Dobkin Everything I’ve Got Thu 14 Oct • 9pm • Iau 14 Hyd Toronto-based performance artist Jess Dobkin’s latest performance is a raw and intimate examination of creativity and mortality in which she draws upon her entire collection of artistic ideas. With the urgency, vulnerability and humour that marks much of her work, she focuses attention on her own artistic practice and confronts her own temporality.

Videotage [20/20] Sat 16 Oct • 2.30pm • Sad 16 Hyd Videotage (literally merging the two concepts of video and montage) is an interdisciplinary artist collective which focuses on the development of video and new media art in Hong Kong. Founded in 1986, Videotage’s support to artists came in the form of labour and equipment for production and post-production, and the exchange of ideas. Videotage has since expanded to include publications, education, exhibitions and screenings. For Experimentica, curator Alvis Choi presents an overview of video works from Hong Kong over the past twenty years. The programme explores the cross-generational difference between those in their 20s, born in the ‘80s, often seen as a politically apathetic, “not caring” generation, and those who were in their 20s during the political activism of the 1980s. The films reflect the role of the independent music scene in Hong Kong video art, and demonstrate how one generation quietly influenced another and how a sense of social and political observation has continued to evolve throughout the Hong Kong art scene. Presented with the support of Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the British Council.

Mnemonic

Mathilde Lopez & Jorge Lizalde Mnemonic Sat 16 Oct • 3–10pm • Sad 16 Hyd This participative project, performance and installation explores and records the act of remembering and processing data, both online and in real-time. The research started online and aimed at recreating a five second video of people’s first memories based on their own scripts and using edited and re-composed fragments of Flickr, Youtube and other online data. You are invited to contribute by visiting a recreated space where, taking the time to remember, you can reshape and record your first visual memory. Please make an appointment at the box office. http://mnemonic.org.uk

Winter’s Bone

The Maid

Fri 1 — Thu 14 Oct • Gwe 1 — Iau 14 Hyd

Fri 1 — Iau 7 Oct • Gwe 1 — Iau 7 Hyd

USA/2010/100mins/15. Dir: Debra Granik. With Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Garret Dillahunt.

Chile/2008/95mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Sebastian Silva. With Catalina Saavedra, Claudia Celadon, Mariana Loyala.

A favourite at the Sundance Film Festival, Winter’s Bone tells the tale of seventeen year old Ree Dolly, who’s living a harsh life on the outskirts of the law in the Ozark Mountains and is the primary caregiver to her unstable mother and two siblings. When her absentee father puts their home up as collateral for his bail, Ree must find him or lose all they have. Rumours abound that he died while ‘cooking’ crystal meth, but a dead father without a body doesn’t help her cause and her persistent questioning of people who know more than they’re letting on puts her, and her family at risk. Based on the novel by Daniel Woodrell and featuring a soundtrack from former Tindersticks composer Dickon Hinchliffe, this tale is told with gorgeously stark and visceral cinematography.

Funny, tense and unpredictable, this is the tale of the pig-headed Racquel, the maid-from-hell who has lived with the same family for 20 years. Her increasingly unreliable behaviour leads them to employ a string of new servants, who Racquel soon sees off. But when the latest recruit, the lovely Lucy, is genuinely kind to her, Racquel has to learn about something she’s never known before — friendship and the need for human contact. Psychologically astute, The Maid slyly overturns our expectations as Racquel (a riveting performance by Saavedra) gradually emerges as a complex, sympathetic character.

Separado! Fri 1 — Tue 5 Oct • Gwe 1 — Maw 5 Hyd UK/Argentina/Brazil/2009/84mins/subtitled/12A. Dir: Gruff Rhys, Dyl ‘Goch’ Jones.

Super Furry Animal Gruff Rhys goes on a quest to find his distant relatives among the descendants of a wave of Welsh immigrants to Patagonia in the late 1800s. Travelling at times by a teleportation device, Rhys journeys across South America performing experimental solo concerts, tracing the Welsh community’s movements, and searching for Jones’ great grandson, a 1970s Argentine pop star called René Griffiths, who would arrive on stage on a horse and sing in Welsh. Told with magical realism, this is a playful, sweet and thoroughly sincere road movie that looks at a fascinating part of welsh culture.

“funny as Almodovar, creepy-strange as Bunuel, and with a hopeful, humane heart to boot” — Edinburgh International Film Festival

Bad Film Club Track of the Moon Beast Sun 3 • Oct • Sul 3 Hyd USA/1976/90mins/PG. Dir: Richard Ashe

Nicko and Joe return with another portion of movie trash featuring their irreverent live commentary. Paul Carson is minding his own business when a fragment of rock hits him on the head during a meteor shower. This unfortunate incident has the unpleasant side-effect of causing Paul to mutate into a giant reptilian monster with a penchant for murderous rampages. I Am Love

Senegal/France/1992/115mins/subtitled/no cert. Dir: Ousemane Sembene

Senegal/1974/123mins/subititled/12A. Dir: Ousemane Sembene.

The body of a Christian activist is mistakenly delivered to Muslims who bury him in a cemetery according to the teachings of Islam. When the error is discovered, the Christians seek to recover ‘their’ body. Some critics have seen this film as a fascinating detective thriller, but it also addresses many of the political questions addressed in Sembene’s other films, such as the credibility of African independence and the role of women in African society. + intro by Yvonne Connike, Film Curator.

Black Girl Sun 17 Oct • Sul 17 Hyd Senegal/1964/60mins/subtitled/no cert. Dir: Ousemane Sembene.

Sembene’s first feature is a seminal film in the history of African cinema. It tells the tragic story of a Senegalese girl employed as a servant to a French couple. Her initial enthusiasm regarding the colonial motherland and employment is quickly transformed, as she finds herself being treated by the family like an object, a non-person, ‘the black girl’. + Borom Sarret (The Cart Driver) Senegal/France/1963/20mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: Ousemane Sembene.

Sembene examines the impact of economic exploitation on ordinary Senegalese citizens in this early short film. A poor cart driver provides a ‘guided tour’ through modern Dakar and his sense of social marginality.

Guelwaar

Sembene’s satire of the modern African bourgeoisie was heavily censored in Senegal at the time of its release, and it remains a sharp attack on neo-colonialism. The film follows the decline of a self-satisfied, Senegalese businessman who is suddenly struck down with the xala (the curse of impotence).

Ceddo (The Outsiders) Sun 24 Oct • Sul 24 Hyd Senegal/1976/117mins/subtitled/PG. Dir: Ousemane Sembene

Set in Senegal at the end of the 19th century, this film tells the story of the Ceddo people who try to preserve their traditional African culture against the onslaught of Islam, Christianity and the slave trade. As a protest against their forcible conversion to Islam, the Ceddo kidnap the local king’s daughter, sparking a highly symbolic confrontation between the opposing social, political and cultural forces.

My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done? Fri 8 — Thu 14 Oct • Gwe 8 — Iau 14 Hyd USA/2010/93mins/ctba. Dir: Werner Herzog. With Michael Shannon, Willem Dafoe, Chloe Sevigny, Brad Dourif.

Called to the scene of a domestic disturbance in suburban San Diego, Detective Hank Havenhurst discovers an elderly woman lying in a pool of blood and an antique sword lying next to the body. The prime suspect is the woman’s son, Brad, who has now barricaded himself inside a nearby house and appears to have taken hostages. As the events leading up to the murder emerge, it becomes apparent that Brad is not so much insane as he is affected and confused by the madness of the world around him and the Greek tragedy in which he is performing. In his first collaboration with fellow filmmaker David Lynch as executive producer, Werner Herzog’s latest film is inspired by the story of Brad Macallum and is as humorous, menacing and compelling as fans of the pair would hope for.

Restrepo Fri 8 — Thu 14 Oct • Gwe 8 — Iau 14 Hyd USA/2009/93mins/Adv 18. Dir: Tim Hetherington, Sebastian Junger.

This documentary is being hailed as one of the most intimate and unflinching examinations yet of the processes of modern warfare. The directors were granted unprecedented access over 15 months with the Second Platoon, Battle Company, 173rd Airborne Brigade. This incredibly unvarnished and profoundly moving account is not for the fainthearted, including disturbing footage of fatalities, both civilian and military. This is a hugely inventive and visually bizarre animated tale which will delight adults and children alike. The long suffering horse, cowboy and Indian set out to discover just who in their tiny rural village is stealing their house as fast as they can build it. Gloriously silly and surreal, the peculiar looking heroes, whom you may recognise from the Cravendale adverts, embark on a fantastic voyage for justice and truth. They journey to the North Pole via the centre of the earth, where they battle a giant penguin robot and renegade scientists, and navigate an underwater world of slippery aquatic house thieves.

Police, Adjective Fri 15 — Thu 21 Oct • Gwe 15 — Iau 21 Hyd Romania/2009/115mins/subtitled/12A. Dir: Corneliu Porumboiu. With Dragos Bucur, Vlad Ivanov, Irina Saulescu.

A double prize winner at Cannes, this is a smart, dryly funny comedy which centres on Cristi, a young undercover cop who undergoes a crisis of conscience when he is pressured to arrest a teenager who offers drugs to his classmates. ‘Offering’ is punished by the law but Cristi believes that the law will change and he doesn’t want the life of a young man he considers irresponsible to be a burden on his conscience. For his superior the word conscience has an entirely different meaning…

Soulboy Fri 15 — Thu 21 Oct • Gwe 15 — Iau 21 Hyd UK/2010/82mins/15. Dir: Shimmy Marcus. With Martin Compston, Felicity Jones, Alfie Allen, Pat Shortt.

+ Sˆ wn music video before all screenings

It’s 1974 and Joe McCain is bored of a life that’s going nowhere in a dead end job and drinking in his local pub. But a chance encounter with a beautiful girl leads him into a new world of all-night dancing at The Wigan Casino, the home of Northern Soul. Swept along with the fashion, dance moves and fantastic music, Joe experiences his first taste of drugs and his exciting new life begins to take a turn towards the darker side of the soul scene. Shimmy Marcus’ fun and dynamic coming-of-age film is set right at the heart of the Northern Soul craze, and features a great UK cast.

Cafe A Go Go Club Night Sat 16 Oct • Sad 16 Hyd Get yourself free entry to the monthly Northern Soul night at the Promised Land in Windsor Place. Take along a ticket stub from Friday or Saturday’s screening. The Cafe A Go Go people will also be handing out 2FOR1 vouchers for Soulboy. Mr. Nice Fri 22 Oct — Thu 4 Nov • Gwe 22 Hyd — Iau 4 Tach UK/2010/121mins/18. Dir: Bernard Rose. With Rhys Ifans, Chloë Sevigny and David Thewliss.

+ Sˆ wn music video before all screenings

Bringing to life the best-selling autobiography about the life and career of Kenfig Hill’s most famous son, Howard Marks, Mr Nice tells the story of the charismatic drugs smuggler who was at one time Britain’s most wanted man. Linked with MI6, the IRA and the Mafia, he eventually spent seven years in America’s toughest penitentiary before reinventing himself as a highly popular public raconteur. Rhys Ifans is a thoroughly charming personification of the 1980s’ Public Enemy Number One and while it would be nice to think that crime doesn’t pay, Mr. Nice doesn’t make a convincing case.

+ Adaptations: Book / Film Club Tue 26 Oct • Maw 26 Hyd The ‘reading group with a difference’ gets together following the screening to discuss Mr Nice and the book that inspired it.

Der Golem

Fri 29 Oct • Gwe 29 Hyd

Sun 31 Oct • Sul 31 Hyd

France/1930/55mins/no cert. Dir: Jean Cocteau. With Enrique Rivero, Elizabeth Lee Miller, Pauline Carton.

Germany/1920/84mins/PG. Dir: Paul Wegener, Carl Boese. With Paul Wegener, Albert Steinruck, Lyda Salmonova.

Steven Severin, Siouxsie and the Banshees co-founder, bassist and songwriter joins us to perform his stunning new live soundtrack to Cocteau’s avant-garde classic. The first part of Cocteau’s Orphic Trilogy, Blood Of A Poet is an intriguing study of the agonies and ecstasies of being a poet. The artist is, in the first part, trapped by his own work as he brings to life a statue and is then forced to walk the corridors of the Hotel Of Dramatic Follies as punishment. With an elusive narrative, this remains a highly influential film and even includes costumes supplied by Coco Chanel. £12/£10/£8

This silent classic is an exemplary specimen of German expressionist cinema set in a 16th century Prague filled with cobbled and twisted streets with towers lurching up to the skies. A rabbi fashions a human-like, proto-Frankenstein’s monster, sculpted from rough clay and brought to life through the medieval art of Cabbalism to protect the Jewish ghetto from a Christian emperor’s decree that it be destroyed. Through surprising means the creature manages to stave off the wrath of the emperor and his court. We’re delighted to welcome back Reflektor — Jan Kopinski (saxophone) and Steve Iliffe (keyboards) — to perform a live musical score to this seminal, melodramatic tale of mysticism and fantasy. £12/£10/£8 www.jankopinski.com + post screening discussion, chaired by SciScreen. The Human Centipede Fri 29 Oct • Gwe 29 Hyd Netherlands/2010/92mins/partially subtitled/18. Dir: Tom Six. With Dieter Laser, Ashley C Williams, Ashlynn Yennie.

When their car breaks down on a road trip through Europe, two young American girls end up alone at night in the woods, and so take shelter in an isolated villa. However, when they wake up, they find themselves trapped with another man in a terrifying makeshift hospital overseen by a demented surgeon who plans to be the first person to create a human centipede. Being connected via your gastric system to two other people may not be to everyone’s taste but fans of classic body horror are sure to enjoy the ride. On giving it a no-star review, respected film lover Roger Ebert noted that the film “occupies a world where the stars don’t shine”.

Made in Dagenham Fri 29 Oct — Thu 4 Nov • Gwe 29 Oct — Iau 4 Tach

Fri 22 — Thu 28 Oct • Gwe 22 — Iau 28 Hyd Mexico/2009/73mins/U. Dir: Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio. With Jorge Machado, Natan Machado Palombini, Nestor Marin.

This mesmerising film, part documentary, part drama, follows a young Mayan fisherman and his five year old son Natan as they spend their last days together before Natan returns to live with his mother in Rome. Spending their time at the coastal Banco Chinchorro in the Caribbean, their relationship develops as they connect with life above and below the surface of the sea, diving for fish and befriending a migrating bird as it passes through to an unknown destination. There is no high drama here, just a beautiful window into the relationship between a father and son and the inevitability that while this idyllic and basic co-existence will disappear, the bond will remain.

Alamar

In the autumn of 2008, the extremely successful, Oscar-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix announced his retirement from film and set off to reinvent himself as a hip hop musician. Director and fellow Hollywood star, Casey Affleck, was allowed remarkable access to create this portrayal of a tumultuous year in Phoenix’s life. Funny, shocking and riveting, the film is a portrait of an artist at a crossroads and explores notions of courage and creative reinvention, as well as the ramifications of a life spent in the public eye.

Double CL1C card points

UK/2010/113mins/15. Dir: Nigel Cole. With Sally Hawkins, Rosamund Pike, Miranda Richardson, Bob Hoskins.

It’s 1968 and both workers’ and cultural revolutions are taking place around the world. Rita, like many other women, works at the Ford plant in Dagenham stitching together seat covers. It’s intricate work carried out in sweltering conditions — so why are the workers paid the same as unskilled labourers? The director of Calendar Girls has joined forces with a host of British talent to bring us a joyful and uplifting retelling of the groundbreaking strike when a group of women teamed up to fight for their right to equal pay.

“It’s an inspiring story and it’s an uplifting story. I want everyone to see this” — Mark Kermode
