It doesn’t get bigger (or better) than this… No-one can accuse us of not thinking big and nowhere is that more evident than our commission of a new touring project by the internationally renowned artists Heather & Ivan Morison. For the last few months the Portsmouth and Southsea skyline has been transformed by the spectacular addition of Luna Park, their re-creation of a 16-metre dinosaur. And now it’s time for Southsea to wave goodbye to the giant Ultrasauros — despite an online petition by local residents to make Luna Park permanent — which starts its move to the idyllic location of the boating lake at Castle Park in Colchester. The ‘life-sized’ dinosaur, based on the mythical Ultrasauros unearthed in the 1970s but later found to be made of the bones from two smaller dinosaurs, is one of the biggest off-site projects in our 40 year history. It was built in a small rural village outside the city of Kragujevac in Serbia and the construction team of engineers, welders, assemblers and model makers were all former employees of the Zastava car factory in the city. As the Ultrasauros travels across the UK it is intended as a temporary monument, a marker of time and place, a shelter, a platform for activity and an area in which to congregate. Some of the photos opposite give a glimpse of its time on Southsea Common. S Mark Gubb: How Should I Live? (Maybe That’s Not The Question) Fri 1 Oct — Sun 7 Nov • Gwe 1 Hyd — Sul 7 Tach Preview: Fri 30 Sept • 6pm • Gwe 30 Medi Wim Wenders’ film Wings of Desire is a seminal reflection on the nature of humanity, centred on the tension between the heavenly protagonists and their earthly counterparts. Acting as an allegory for some of the big philosophical debates, the film conveys the immediacy of such questions of contemporary existence as life, death, love and faith. S Mark Gubb’s exhibition is also a reflection on the nature of existence. Taking its title from a line in the film, How Should I Live? (Maybe That’s Not The Question) raises questions of personal ambition, belief and values, by asking you to make choices as you navigate your way through the gallery. On the one hand the exhibition is an exploration of a kind of naive utopian ideal in which Gubb explores, amongst other things, the Costa Rican notion of ‘Pura Vida’ or the ‘Good Life’; but this is consistently tempered by his ability to cut across any notions that the journey through life could be without complexity or sacrifice. And so he offers various points of access, allowing engagement with the subject and content in several meaningful ways; pulling different aspects in and out of focus so that the response demanded can also tap into the deeper cultural, political, moral and social decisions that shape us. Biography S Mark Gubb was born in Margate, Kent and studied at the Universities of Derby (BA Fine Art) and Central England (MA Fine Art). Previous exhibitions and projects include Zünderkerze, Matthew Bown Gallery, Berlin; We Have the Mirrors, We Have the Plans, Mostyn, Llandudno; History of a Time to Come, Crate Project Space, Margate (all 2010); My Empire of Dirt, Ceri Hand Gallery, Liverpool; Pura Vida, Hinterland, Nottingham (both 2009); Here Today, Gone Tomorrow, The City Gallery, Leicester (2008); Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere, Castlefield Gallery, Manchester and The Death of Peter Fechter, ICA, London (both 2007). He is currently working on public commissions for Bristol City Council and The Usher Gallery, Lincoln, a solo show at Aspex, Portsmouth early in 2011 and was recently shortlisted to represent Wales at the Venice Biennale in 2011. Built around a block of high-rise flats in a council estate in the mid 1970s, the Maelfa Shopping Centre in Llanedeyrn is the focus of artist Sean Edwards’ portrait of a near derelict space. His film focuses on the detritus of daily life and the inevitable failure of human aspirations for greatness. Slow paced and silent, Maelfa touches upon a sense of poignancy associated with disappearing communities and failed utopian aspirations. The screening is accompanied by a book launch of ‘No Dust Adheres’, published by The Bedford Press, London and Safle, Cardiff. Maelfa has been made with the assistance of The Elephant Trust and Safle with the financial assistance of the Arts Council of Wales.

On the Edge An Absent Look by Mercè Sarrias Tue 26 Oct • 8pm • Maw 26 Hyd Michael Kelligan continues his Deadlier Than The Male season of plays written and directed by women with this script-held performance directed by Ruth Garnault. Mercè Sarrias is a Catalonian playwright whose work has much in common with female artists working in Wales. Inspired by cartoon strips and old black and white movies, she has developed a fresh, idiosyncratic writing style. Paul Granjon Black Box Ni Sat 9 Oct • 8pm • Sad 9 Hyd Wearing a special interactive costume, Paul Granjon delivers his most recent performance work focusing on the latest developments of military robotics. However, during the course of his presentation a mysterious electronic black box sends radio-wave commands to the costume, interrupting the smooth flow of his delivery. He has to complete a mission for the black box before resuming his human activities. Black Box Ni is Paul Granjon’s latest reflection on the co-evolution of humans and machines. The performance tackles issues of technological dependence, human adaptation and communication with machines and features a unique mix of funny robots, sad songs and a happy ending. Paul Granjon has been developing his machines for 10 years, from his studio at Chapter. He first made an impression with Cardiff audiences with It Is Not a Piece of Cake during the Cardiff Art in Time Festival in 1995. His robotic solo exhibition Z Lab 2001 was commissioned for Chapter Gallery and toured Wales and beyond, and in 2005 he represented Wales as part of the Venice Biennale. He was born in China, grew up in Hong Kong and was based in New York for 15 years before returning to Hong Kong in 1995. He has presented over 3000 shows all over the world, including Frog Fun Lum and 9 million works on-going project. Frog King will be present throughout Experimentica with his ‘multi-media performance installation mobile museum project’ in the Chapter foyer and concourse.

But these narratives never address the role performance art will play in future societies. What kind of work would a performance artist make onboard a spaceship or in a postapocalyptic world? What kind of work would a performance artist make in the UK after ten years of Conservative government, in a climate akin to that of Southern California today? What would a performance for the year 2020 look like? In imagining it, can we actually shape this future? Wed 13 Oct • 8pm • Mer 13 Hyd The symbol of the Raven stands at the threshold between death and rebirth. Horacek’s performance explores the ritual of transformation as she calls the spirit of the Raven into her body and transforms the old into something new.

Thu 14 Oct • 12–2pm • Mer 13 Hyd This collaborative audiovisual installation focuses on the disused Porthgain granite quarry in Pembrokeshire. Shot in 16mm from a fixed position the camera slowly rotates in a continual 360 degree panorama in which events take place that evoke both the present uses of the quarry, and recall its past. Traces of the history of the site are visible in the hewed rock and in the remains of the brick buildings that formed part of the working operation. By paying attention to the minutiae of sounds, and our ability to construct meaning from acoustic events even when we don’t see their source, a sense of place is generated – suspended between the past and the present.

Noel James Godzelvis Thu 14 Oct • 7pm • Iau 14 Hyd What is the difference between a comedy act and performance art? Conceptual art and ‘the joke’ often embrace language. The background to Noel’s elaborate wordplay and absurdist routines is more working class social club than situationist cabaret. His comedy absorbs many influences, from Yoko Ono to horror films from the 1950s.

Jess Dobkin Everything I’ve Got Thu 14 Oct • 9pm • Iau 14 Hyd Toronto-based performance artist Jess Dobkin’s latest performance is a raw and intimate examination of creativity and mortality in which she draws upon her entire collection of artistic ideas. With the urgency, vulnerability and humour that marks much of her work, she focuses attention on her own artistic practice and confronts her own temporality.

Videotage [20/20] Sat 16 Oct • 2.30pm • Sad 16 Hyd Videotage (literally merging the two concepts of video and montage) is an interdisciplinary artist collective which focuses on the development of video and new media art in Hong Kong. Founded in 1986, Videotage’s support to artists came in the form of labour and equipment for production and post-production, and the exchange of ideas. Videotage has since expanded to include publications, education, exhibitions and screenings. For Experimentica, curator Alvis Choi presents an overview of video works from Hong Kong over the past twenty years. The programme explores the cross-generational difference between those in their 20s, born in the ‘80s, often seen as a politically apathetic, “not caring” generation, and those who were in their 20s during the political activism of the 1980s. The films reflect the role of the independent music scene in Hong Kong video art, and demonstrate how one generation quietly influenced another and how a sense of social and political observation has continued to evolve throughout the Hong Kong art scene. The research started online and aimed at recreating a five second video of people’s first memories based on their own scripts and using edited and re-composed fragments of Flickr, Youtube and other online data. As part of a residency project, she has been visiting Oriel Mostyn in Llandudno since 2004. Following the gallery’s progress from demolition through to completion, she has experienced at first hand the extensive rejuvenation and expansion project. Shapland and her collaborators, composer/ musician Dewi Evans and performer Will Dickie, bring to Chapter elements of their performances and exhibition at the recently reopened Mostyn. The installation includes video, drawings, photographs and sculptural objects created over the residency’s duration.

He made an extraordinary debut in 1976 with Howard Hughes, a performance described by Mike Pearson as ‘a tour de force’. Previously unseen video, rare recordings and contributions from collaborators and Alexander himself explore his unique work (10 productions) and the first decade of experimentation at Chapter. This event is chaired by Heike Roms, Lecturer in Performance Studies, Aberystwyth University.

Good Cop Bad Cop Pitch Sun 17 Oct • 8pm • Sul 17 Hyd Experimentica stalwarts Good Cop Bad Cop present the opening work in a year long series of research and artworks entitled ‘Croeso I Gymry/u Fwyaf!’ Pitch explores consolidation, appropriation and expansion into new markets. It’s a positioning performance, locating previous and current product within the context of the prevailing dominant modes of creation and transmission. In the retail and grocery sector 14% of new product ideas actually make it to market. 85% of products fail within the first year. So, 2.1% of ideas don’t fail as products within the first year. In 2010, John Rowley and Richard Huw Morgan celebrate 20 years of creative partnership.

A favourite at the Sundance Film Festival, Winter’s Bone tells the tale of seventeen year old Ree Dolly, who’s living a harsh life on the outskirts of the law in the Ozark Mountains and is the primary caregiver to her unstable mother and two siblings. When her absentee father puts their home up as collateral for his bail, Ree must find him or lose all they have. Rumours abound that he died while ‘cooking’ crystal meth, but a dead father without a body doesn’t help her cause and her persistent questioning of people who know more than they’re letting on puts her, and her family at risk. Based on the novel by Daniel Woodrell and featuring a soundtrack from former Tindersticks composer Dickon Hinchliffe, this tale is told with gorgeously stark and visceral cinematography.

Funny, tense and unpredictable, this is the tale of the pig-headed Racquel, the maid-from-hell who has lived with the same family for 20 years. Her increasingly unreliable behaviour leads them to employ a string of new servants, who Racquel soon sees off. But when the latest recruit, the lovely Lucy, is genuinely kind to her, Racquel has to learn about something she’s never known before — friendship and the need for human contact. Psychologically astute, The Maid slyly overturns our expectations as Racquel (a riveting performance by Saavedra) gradually emerges as a complex, sympathetic character.

Told with magical realism, this is a playful, sweet and thoroughly sincere road movie that looks at a fascinating part of welsh culture.

When the error is discovered, the Christians seek to recover ‘their’ body. Some critics have seen this film as a fascinating detective thriller, but it also addresses many of the political questions addressed in Sembene’s other films, such as the credibility of African independence and the role of women in African society. + intro by Yvonne Connike, Film Curator.

Sembene’s first feature is a seminal film in the history of African cinema. It tells the tragic story of a Senegalese girl employed as a servant to a French couple. Her initial enthusiasm regarding the colonial motherland and employment is quickly transformed, as she finds herself being treated by the family like an object, a non-person, ‘the black girl’. + Borom Sarret (The Cart Driver) Senegal/France/1963/20mins/subtitled/ctba. Sembene examines the impact of economic exploitation on ordinary Senegalese citizens in this early short film. A poor cart driver provides a ‘guided tour’ through modern Dakar and his sense of social marginality.

Guelwaar

Sembene’s satire of the modern African bourgeoisie was heavily censored in Senegal at the time of its release, and it remains a sharp attack on neo-colonialism. The film follows the decline of a self-satisfied, Senegalese businessman who is suddenly struck down with the xala (the curse of impotence).

Set in Senegal at the end of the 19th century, this film tells the story of the Ceddo people who try to preserve their traditional African culture against the onslaught of Islam, Christianity and the slave trade. As a protest against their forcible conversion to Islam, the Ceddo kidnap the local king’s daughter, sparking a highly symbolic confrontation between the opposing social, political and cultural forces.

The prime suspect is the woman’s son, Brad, who has now barricaded himself inside a nearby house and appears to have taken hostages. As the events leading up to the murder emerge, it becomes apparent that Brad is not so much insane as he is affected and confused by the madness of the world around him and the Greek tragedy in which he is performing. In his first collaboration with fellow filmmaker David Lynch as executive producer, Werner Herzog’s latest film is inspired by the story of Brad Macallum and is as humorous, menacing and compelling as fans of the pair would hope for.

Being connected via your gastric system to two other people may not be to everyone’s taste but fans of classic body horror are sure to enjoy the ride. There is no high drama here, just a beautiful window into the relationship between a father and son and the inevitability that while this idyllic and basic co-existence will disappear, the bond will remain.

Chapter Old School Ale Launch Wed 27 Oct • 6–8pm • Mer 27 Hyd A huge hit with our regulars when we piloted it earlier this year, we’re celebrating the launch of our very own real ale with a free pint and some tasty morsels. Chapter Old School is made by real ale innovators Ian Teagle and Dave Walbeoff of VoG brewery in Barry. Tasty! The first 50 glasses are free on a first come, first served basis. Get here early…

Festival Food Our café will be serving special menus during the Sŵn Festival (Fri 22 + Sat 23 Oct, see p12) and Oktoberfest (see above) including favourites from our main menu and treats such as hot dogs with sauerkraut and homemade German curry ketchup. Please note that the full café menu will not be available at these times.

Chapter is situated in Canton, behind Cowbridge Road East, between Llandaff Road and Market Road. We are easily accessible from the city centre. Overflow car parking is available after 6pm at Cardiff Community Learning Services adjacent to the car park at Chapter. Alternative nearby car parks are shown above. Number 17, 18 and 33 buses leave every five minutes from the City Centre. From the east on M4: Take exit 29 onto the A48; after 6 miles turn slight left onto A4119/ Mill Lane; then left onto Cardiff Road; continue straight onto B4267/Llandaff Rd; after 300m turn right onto Market Place; take next right onto Market Road; Chapter car park is on the right. From the west on M4: Take exit 33 and follow signs onto A4232; after 6.3 miles exit onto Leckwith Rd, towards the new Cardiff City Stadium; keep straight until turning left onto Cowbridge Road E; Market Rd is on your right; Chapter car park is on the right.
