As always we’ve a selection of compelling documentaries, including Hawking (p5) which delves into the astonishing scientific discoveries and true life story of the world’s most famous living scientist, professor Stephen Hawking, and will be followed by a live satellite Q+A with the man himself and guests. Cine Phonic (p8–9) brings us the very best music films, and we start by taking a journey back to the golden age of silent films, with early masterpiece The Passion of Joan of Arc (p8) featuring live accompaniment by pianist and composer Paul Shallcross. Morrissey 25: Live (p9) brings us back to the present with the first authorised film on the outspoken star in more than 9 years, whilst The Blueblack Hussar (p9) takes a revealing look at iconic Neo-Romantic Adam Ant as he grapples with fame the second time around. Fri 23 Aug — Thu 5 Sep USA/2013/90mins/18. Dir: Nicholas Winding Refn. With: Ryan Gosling, Kristen Scott Thomas, Yayaying Rhhatha Phongam.

Julian is respected in Bangkok’s criminal underworld, running a boxing club as a front for drug smuggling with his violent brother Billy. When Billy is murdered their crime-lord matriarch Jenna compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible and ‘raise hell’, but there is a sword-carrying cop on his trail. A queasy, tense nightmare with a neon-sheen from the director and star of Drive.

What Maisie Knew Fri 30 Aug — Thu 5 Sep USA/2013/99mins/15. Dir: Scott McGehee, David Siegel. With: Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan, Alexander Skarsgård.

In this powerful contemporary update of the Henry James novel, we meet Maisie, a little girl with newly divorced parents; fading rock star Susanne and British art dealer Beale. The ex-lovers compete for custody, more to score points against each other than for her well-being. Their respective new partners are caught in the middle of this narcissistic display but unprepared to take responsibility for the child. A luminous performance from newcomer Onata Aprile and a biting look at modern family life. + Audio description & soft subtitles Tue 3 Sep

Fri 30 Aug — Thu 5 Sep USA/2010/115mins/15. Dir: Dirk Simon. With: Richard Gere, The Dalai Lama.

As economic interests make an open China an alluring possibility for Western governments, possible human rights violations are swept aside. The lack of progress towards an autonomous Tibet urges more of its people to consider the Dalai Lama’s controversial Middle Way Policy, a compromise on independence. With interviews from prominent speakers in the Buddhist community as well as world leaders, this is a look at the complexity of the struggle, with an incredible soundtrack by Philip Glass and Thom Yorke amongst others.

World War Z Fri 30 Aug — Thu 5 Sep USA/2013/116mins/15. Dir: Marc Foster. With: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Peter Capaldi.

Gerry, a former U.N. investigator, is pulled into his old profession when a zombie apocalypse threatens to destroy the world. With a virologist and a military team in tow he dashes around the globe in search of patient zero, finding previous world powers pushed aside in the battle to kill or cure the human race. An intelligent, impressive thriller with an emphasis on geopolitics rather than gore and anchored by a solid central performance from producer and actor Brad Pitt.

The Big City

Lovelace

Sun 1 + Tue 3 Sep

Fri 6 — Thu 12 Sep

India/1963/135mins/PG. Dir: Satyajit Ray. With: Anil Chatterjee, Madhabi Mukherjee.

USA/2013/92mins/18. Dir: Rob Epstein. With: Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard.

A woman’s place is with her cooking pots; that is the firm belief of Subrata Mazumdar, a young bank clerk struggling to support his entire extended family on a meagre salary, and he is duly horrified when his wife Arati offers to help by going out to work as a ‘salesgirl’. Satyajit Ray’s wonderful portrait of mid-50s Calcutta, a society still adjusting to independence, displays warmth, wit and genuine insight into its large, multi-generational cast of characters. Now re-released by the BFI to mark its fiftieth anniversary, The Big City, with its emphasis on conflicting social values and most particularly on the role of women, feels as fresh and relevant as ever.

In 1972, before the internet made porn available from every screen, Deep Throat was a phenomenon: the first scripted pornographic theatrical feature film, featuring a story, some jokes, and an unknown and unlikely star, Linda Lovelace. Escaping a strict religious family, Linda discovered freedom and the highlife when she fell for charismatic hustler Chuck Traynor and became an international sensation-less centerfold fantasy. Fully inhabiting her new identity, Linda became an enthusiastic spokesperson for sexual freedom, but six years later she presented another, utterly contradictory narrative to the world as the survivor of a far darker story.

Bad Film Club The Ultimate Weapon

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa

Sun 1 Sep USA/1998/110mins/15. Dir: Jon Cassar. With: Hulk Hogan.

Hulk Hogan stars in this not so action-paced but sold on being action-packed drama, as a professional soldier who discovers that the people who’ve hired him are actually double agents working with the IRA. Obviously narked about the deception, he starts to plot his revenge against the soldiers who doublecrossed him. Great acting, great action and a great story… are all missing from this film, but it will make you feel a whole lot better about your life. A running commentary will accompany this film. Film titles can differ from that in the programme.

Chapter Moviemaker Mon 2 Sep A regular showcase for short films by independent filmmakers. Occasionally films with adult content will be shown, therefore Chapter Moviemaker is advised 18. FREE

Fri 6 — Thu 12 Sep UK/2013/90mins/15. Dir: Declan Lowney. With: Steve Coogan, Colm Meaney.

After wrapping up Peartree Productions, Partridge is now employed by North Norfolk Digital, presenting the “Mid-Morning Matters” show. The station is bought up by a media conglomerate and their restructure forces depressive night-shift DJ Pat Farrell out of his show. Angry at the execs, Pat retaliates by staging a siege at the office party, taking staff hostage and refusing to negotiate with anyone other than Alan. With his conscience awakened by the chance of once again becoming a national treasure, can Alan save the day?

Reel to Reel Clockwise from top left: More Than Honey, Hawking, InRealLife

“ There is no unique picture of reality.” Stephen Hawking

More Than Honey Fri 13 — Thu 19 Sep Switzerland/2012/95min/ctba. Dir: Markus Imhoof. Narration by John Hurt.

This compelling documentary uses state-of-the-art film-making to illuminate the world’s bee crises in California, Switzerland, China and Australia. Colony collapse disorder has decimated the bee population, with scientists still uncertain about the exact nature of the deadly phenomenon. Imhoof, who has a family history of beekeeping, travelled to three continents, interviewing apiculture players and examining the nature of the calamity as well as discussing possible solutions. With an introduction from Julian Riggs from International Bee Research Assocation www.ibra.org.uk on Tue 17 Sep.

Hawking + Satellite Q&A Thu 19 Sep UK/2013/86mins/ctba. Dir: Stephen Finnigan. With: Stephen Hawking, Nathan Chapple, Arthur Pelling.

Stephen Hawking, the world’s most famous living scientist, tells his life story in his own words. Given unprecedented personal access to the physicist, filmmaker Stephen Finnigan delves into memories of Hawking’s student days, recounts his astonishing scientific discoveries and portrays his struggle against Motor Neurone Disease, with which Hawking, now 71, was first diagnosed at the age of 21. An intimate and inspiring portrait of a remarkable man. This screening will be accompanied by a live Q&A with Stephen Hawking and guests via satellite from the opening night of the Cambridge Film Festival

InRealLife + Satellite Q&A Sun 22 Sep UK/2013/86mins (full event 150mins)/ctba. Dir: Beeban Kidron.

What exactly is the internet and what is it doing to our children? Taking us on a journey from the bedrooms of British teenagers to the world of Silicon Valley, filmmaker Beeban Kidron suggests that rather than the promise of free and open connectivity, young people are increasingly ensnared in a commercial world. Beguiling and glittering on the outside, it can be alienating and addictive. Quietly building its case, InRealLife asks if we can afford to stand by while our children, trapped in their 24/7 connectivity, are being outsourced to the net? This live satellite event will include a post screening panel discussion moderated by Jon Snow with Beeban and young people from the film.

The Kings of Summer

Ain’t Them Bodies Saints

Fri 6 — Thu 12 Sep

Fri 13 — Wed 25 Sep

USA/2013/95mins/15. Dir: Jordan Vogt-Roberts. With: Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso, Moises Arias, Nick Offerman.

USA/2012/97mins/ctba. Dir: David Lowery. With: Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, Ben Foster.

Joe, Patrick and Biaggio have grown up together in a suburban mid-west American town and aged 15 they have decided that this summer will be different. Abandoning their needy, oddball parents, they build a house in the woods and live out their fantasies of independence and living off the land. In this refreshingly funny and emotionally rich story the boys yearning to be men rejoice in their liberation and experience, for a while, what it is to be free.

A film about wild passion that exists outside of the law in 1970s Texas Hill Country. In a standoff with the police Ruth wounds a policeman but husband Bob goes to prison in her place, discovering a little later that she is pregnant. Four years on, Ruth has embraced single parenthood and Sheriff Patrick pays her regular visits, while Bob succeeds on his sixth attempt at escape. Making his way home, Bob is unaware that forces bigger than Patrick look to keep him and Ruth apart. With dreamy cinematography and superb performances, this is an unforgettable, tense love triangle.

06

Heaven’s Gate Sun 15 Sep USA/1981/216mins/15. Dir: Michael Cimino. With: Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, Jeff Bridges, Isabell Huppert.

When Harvard lawyer, Averill arrives at a community of European immigrants struggling with a brutal cattle owners’ association, he does what he can to help them in what would become the real-life bloody conflict of the Johnson County War in 1892. At the heart of Heaven’s Gate lies a fraught love story between rogue Federal Marshal Averill, local madam Ella and association mercenary Nate, with spectacular cinematography depicting the awesome nature of America’s landscape and its historical significance in the post-Civil War era.

“The film is so singular, it’s hard to place. At times, its elegiac visual quality evokes Terrence Malick, but Lowery’s scripting is tighter and more accessible. His is truly a fresh voice, exhilarating to hear.” The Guardian

Pieta Fri 13 — Wed 18 Sep South Korea/2012/104mins/subtitles/18. Dir: Kim Ki-duk. With: Min-soo Jo, Jeong-jin Lee, Ki-Hong Woo.

Handsome Kang-do is a Seoul mafia man whose sadism knows no bounds till one day when a mysterious woman arrives at his door claiming to be his mother, begging for his forgiveness for giving him up as an infant. A punchy, claustrophobic and complex drama using violence and dark humour to discuss the brutality of the pursuit of money and the emotional wreckage it can cause. Elysium

The Great Beauty

Fri 13 — Thu 19 Sep

Fri 20 — Thu 26 Sep

USA/2013/109mins/15. Dir: Neill Blomkamp. With: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley.

Italy/2013/141mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Paolo Sorrentino. With: Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone, Sabrina Ferilli.

In the year 2154, two classes of people exist; the very wealthy, who live on a space station called Elysium and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. When Earth’s inhabitants try to escape, some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce antiimmigration laws and preserve their luxurious lifestyle. Max is in desperate need to get to Elysium and with his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission. If he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but the lives of millions of people on Earth as well.

In the splendour of summer, charming Jep Gamberdella enjoys Rome’s social life to the full. In his youth he wrote an award-winning novel and he has dined on its reputation ever since. Now a journalist and inveterate seducer, he is weary of his lifestyle and dreams of taking up his pen again, haunted by memories of a youthful love. But can he overcome his profound disgust for himself and others, in a city whose dazzling beauty sometimes leads to paralysis? The swooning camera eye of Sorrentino glides and perfectly captures the Eternal City and the people of Berlusconi’s Italy.

Kelly and Victor meet on the dance floor of a Liverpool nightclub, wander through the night to her flat and make love with a ferocity neither of them has experienced before. However, the bleakness of their ordinary existence away from the intensity of their passion seeks to pull them apart. This beautiful story of a search for the magic and mystery of love in a spiritual vacuum is a raw, haunting and transgressive adaptation of the novel by Niall Griffiths. + Q&A with director Kieran Evans on Sun 22 Sep.

Rock and Roll’s Greatest Failure: Otway The Movie Thu 5 Sep UK/2013/90mins/12A. Dir: Steve Barker.

In the midst of Britain’s 70s punk revolution and after a momentous TV appearance where five and a half million viewers watched him land painfully on his testicles, Otway was high in the charts. Too bad his next hit was 25 years later. His career is a magical lesson in self-promoting, recruiting fans for overthe-top projects which, among others, secured him a Top Ten hit for his 50th birthday and a feature movie for his 60th. John Otway will be joining us at this screening for a post film Q&A.

An elaborate deception becomes a bizarre way of life. Californian rap duo Silibil ‘n’ Brains are poised to take the music world by storm. They’re talking the talk... walking the walk... and they’ve just pocketed a hefty advance from a major music label. Surely nothing could go wrong? This beautiful film, adapted from transcripts of the trial of Joan of Arc, is a masterpiece of early cinema. Powerful visions led the peasant girl to believe that God chose her to lead the French into battle against the English. Captured and pressured to recant her beliefs, this is the intimate end of her story of battered faith, vicious bullying and personal torment played out largely in brutal, heartbreaking close ups. Paul Shallcross the Brecon-based pianist and composer will be accompanying this silent classic. £12/£10/£8. Tuesday matinee £7/£6/£5.

Spain/2012/104mins/subtitles/adv15. Dir: Fernando Trueba. With: Jean Rochefort, Aida Folch, Claudia Cardinale.

Tom Ripley travels on an all-expenses-paid mission to Italy to convince the errant playboy Philippe Greenleaf to go back to San Francisco at the request of his wealthy family. Initially, the pair enjoy the good life, often to the dismay of Philippe’s fiancée Marge. When it becomes apparent that Philippe has no intention of returning to the U.S. Tom has to consider more nefarious means of maintaining his extravagant lifestyle. Adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr Ripley, the homoerotic undercurrents which simmer below the surface of Tom and Philippe’s relationship set into motion a love/hate tension which explodes during a high seas journey.

Marc Cross, an elderly, eminent sculptor lives with his wife in the south of France, safe from the World War that rages in the distance. He seems to have reached the end of his life when one day they encounter a beautiful young Spanish political refugee who agrees to model for him in exchange for food and shelter. Trueba (Belle Epoque, Chico and Rita) collaborates with legendary screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière (Goya’s Ghosts) to present a poetic tale of a quest for beauty and artistic inspiration, whilst examining the complexities of the human condition at a pivotal moment in history.
