There’s a lot going on… The stunning photos on the opposite page, taken by local photographer Dan Green, are a glimpse of one evening in July when South Wales Intercultural Community Arts brought a taste of carnival from around the world to Chapter. It was a great night and just one example of what we know you love about us — there’s always something happening. And that’s not just in the cinema, theatre and gallery — there are always lots of free events taking place in every nook and cranny of the building. September is no exception. Early in the month (Tue 7 Sept) you’ll find the next Coffee Shop Debate happening in the Theatre Foyer. This month the awardwinning poet Ifor Thomas proclaims that the Swedish novelist Stieg Larsson is the Tolstoy of our age. Do you agree? Come along and join the debate, you’ll find more details on p17. Larsson’s Millennium trilogy of dark crime thrillers have also been adapted for the big screen, two of which can be seen here this month (The Girl who Played with Fire and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo both screen from Fri 10 Sept, see p27). And if you love books and love films too, there’s a Larsson connection in the first of our new Adaptations club — read the book, see the film and discuss both. See p27 for details. Some of you will already be big fans of the BBC Radio Wales hit comedy The LL Files and this month you’ve got a chance to be in the audience (see p17). Or is jazz or jewellery more your thing? For jewellery try the gallery shop or come along to Make it Pretty, the second outing at Chapter for this eclectic craft and fashion fair (Sat 25 Sept). For jazz you can’t beat our cinema’s very own Glen Manby, a great way to end the week or get ready for the next (Sun 26 Sept). And there’ll be lots more things that ‘just happen’. All for free, all at Chapter.

Magic Show Until Sun 12 Sept • Tan Sul 12 Medi Art, like magic, aims to interrupt and overturn everyday notions of reality. Magic Show demonstrates how visual artists draw upon the perceptionshifting tactics of the theatrical magician to explore questions of creative agency, the power of suggestion and the fragility of belief. Artists may manipulate and mystify, not simply to entertain, but to reveal fundamental relationships between matter and mind, knowledge and perception. The exhibition features work by 24 international artists in a wide range of media, from video and performance to sculptural installation. It also includes an historical archive of rarely seen props, paraphernalia and imagery from the world of theatrical magic, underlining the themes of conflict, belief and coercion that resonate throughout the exhibition. Just as the secular magician can throw our understanding of the world into disarray with carefully deployed sleights of hand, art too flourishes in the gap between fact and fiction. Magic Show highlights include Zoë Beloff’s 3D video installation (complete with glasses) which features a vaudeville-style performance of two case studies from early 20th-century psychopathology; The Center for Tactical Magic’s ‘Ultimate Jacket’, which has 50 pockets for optimum concealment and retrieval and is being worn by our gallery assistants; João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva’s poetic and metaphysical films featuring trees, rocks, water and rope behaving strangely and disobeying rational natural laws; Susan Hiller’s selection of found photographs of people levitating; and Sinta Werner’s installations which mimic architectural features in the gallery to distort space and trick your eye. And don’t forget to take a look at the amazing ‘card finding duck’, a staple of TV magicians in the 1970s, this one actually belonged to the late, great Tommy Cooper. An exhibition catalogue is available to buy from The Shop priced at £9.99. Magic Show is a Hayward Touring Exhibition from the Southbank Centre, curated by artist Jonathan Allen and writer Sally O’Reilly.

Stuart Bailes, Of Walking in Ice, 2009. Photographic prints. Installation at Chapter.

Assembly: Art in the Bar Stuart Bailes — Of Walking in Ice Until Fri 3 Sept • Tan Gwe 3 Medi Stuart Bailes’ work is inspired by a deep fascination with the land. Using simple visual gestures, objects or captured moments, he explores how we understand our physical surroundings, and reflects on the discrepancies between true experiences and how they are ultimately perceived. Of Walking in Ice is a series of photographs exploring the idea of experience as an imagined perception. The images are studio reconstructions of objects that Bailes has documented while walking in Wales, England, Scotland, Iceland and Norway. There are limitations to how a photograph can represent a physical experience; and Bailes addresses this by reducing the space within the images to prompt you to re-examine what you think you know.

Stuart Bailes was born in 1985 in Bath and graduated from the University of Wales, Newport in 2007. He is based in London and has just completed his MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art. Recent exhibitions include Freshfacedandwildeyed 08, The Photographers Gallery, London; Future 50, PSL, Leeds; ArtswayOpen09, Artsway, Hampshire and Hal Silver, The Russian Club, London. In 2009 he was selected as Magenta Foundation’s Flashforward09 UK winner resulting in an international touring group show. He has been selected by Jotta Contemporary to show at the 2010 Affordable Art Fair; and has just received the Hooper’s Gallery Award for his MA graduate exhibition in London.

Marega Palser Sat 18 Sept • 6-9pm • Sad 18 Medi Marega Palser is well known at Chapter for her extraordinary performances as part of the inimitable Mr and Mrs Clark, and for her Art in the Bar exhibition in 2008. This short exhibition of drawings, prints and animation also features a series of dance/performance sketches. Ruth Jones Vigil Preview: Tue 7 Sept • 6-8pm • Maw 7 Medi Wed 8 — Sat 11 Sept • 3-8.30pm • Mer 8 — Sad 11 Medi Ruth Jones’ recent video installations and public art projects have focused on the relationships between humans, animals and the land, and explored the magnetic pull that particular places have on people. Vigil examines the presence that Strumble Head Lighthouse has on the landscape in North Pembrokeshire. The lighthouse was built in 1908, and its rotating beam can be seen for thirty miles in all directions. Every lighthouse has its own distinctive ‘character’, recognised by a pattern and duration of flashes, in this case, one flash every two seconds four times, followed by seven seconds of darkness. Jones’ project suggests that this rhythm has permeated the land for over a hundred years, seeping into the psyche of its inhabitants. The installation also portrays the lighthouse as a threshold place, situated between land and sea, day and night and the human and animal kingdoms. Using Strumble’s regulated light pattern as a guide for editing both picture and sound, Jones’ film invites a quiet contemplation of the internal and external rhythms that influence our daily experiences, rituals and memories. Jill Greenhalgh The Threat of Silence

theatre • theatr Double CL1C card points

Thu 23 — Sat 25 Sept • 8pm • Iau 23 — Sad 25 Medi The residues of silence and tranquillity reside in a place of uncomfortable beauty; a place of absence and remembrance. This new collaboration combines video, music, text, action and sound to question the chaotic pace of today’s society: the ever increasing noise, information overload and the disappearance of the act of listening in daily life. Director Jill Greenhalgh has gathered an international team of renowned artists to contribute to this new work: cellist Nicola Thomas (Wales), performance and video artist Zoe Christiansen (Norway), performer Eddie Ladd (Wales) and writer Margaret Cameron (Australia). Greenhalgh’s most recent theatre work at Chapter, The Acts Vigia, explored how performance could respond to the brutal femicide occurring on the Mexico/US border. The Threat of Silence is the next stage of her investigation into, and pursuit of, an effective feminine language in performance. £10/£8/£6 With support from Theatr Mwldan, Arts Victoria and the Arts Council of Wales.

Chanel Coco and Igor Stravinsky Fri 20 Aug — Thu 2 Sept • Gwe 20 Awst — Iau 2 Medi France/2009/120mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: Jan Kounen. With Anna Mouglalis, Mads Mikkelsen, Yelena Morozova.

In 1913 at the Theatre Des Champs-Elysées, Igor Stravinsky premieres his controversial composition, The Rite Of Spring. But the crowd isn’t yet ready for this revolutionary work and, as a near riot ensues, Coco Chanel finds herself mesmerised by this radical character. Seven years later, a now rich and respected Coco Chanel meets Stravinsky again and a passionate and intense love affair begins between them, fuelled by their desires to push the boundaries of fashion and music. Picking up where Coco Before Chanel ended, Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel made their archives and collections available for this film which features several original garments and even Coco’s own celebrated apartment. + Artist’s Short: Tomorrow Everything Will Be Alright Lebanon/7mins/12A. Dir: Akram Zaatari.

The Secret in Their Eyes Fri 27 Aug — Thu 9 Sept • Gwe 27 Awst — Iau 9 Medi Argentina/Spain/2009/130mins/subtitled/18. Dir: Juan José Campanella. With Ricardo Darín, Soledad Villamil, Pablo Rago, Javier Godino.

This year’s Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winner is a skilful blend of love story, crime thriller and legal drama with a distinctly Latin flavour in its sweeping melodrama and emotive, showstopper scenes. The generous running time allows the film to fully explore the central love affair of female District Attorney, Irene, and criminal investigator, Sandoval. Neatly entwined around their story is Sandoval’s obsession with the unsolved case of a murderer who has escaped justice through a mix of police corruption and mysterious disappearance. A heady mélange of violence, baroque styling and sentimentality, this is a thriller deeply in debt to the lush rhythms of Almodovar and the tougher genre elements of South American cinema such as Nine Queens.

No Greater Love Fri 27 Aug — Thu 2 Sept • Gwe 27 Awst — Iau 2 Medi UK/2009/100mins/ctba. Dir: Michael Whyte. With nuns from the Carmelite monastery.

After ten years of trying, director Michael Whyte was given unprecedented access to a monastery in Notting Hill to produce a unique depiction of an alternative, spiritual way of life. This extraordinary documentary unveils the hidden world of the Carmelite Nuns of the Most Holy Trinity and provides a rare glimpse into their lives of prayer and contemplation. Silence is maintained throughout the day with the exception of 40 minutes of social recreation in the morning and evening. The nuns leave the monastery only to visit the doctor or dentist; they cook all their own food and wear their own handmade clothes.

Fri 27 Aug — Thu 9 Sept • Gwe 27 Awst — Iau 9 Medi USA /2010/142mins/12A. Dir: Christopher Nolan. With Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard.

Christopher ‘The Dark Knight’ Nolan’s long awaited latest feature is a dark and complex science fiction thriller that travels the globe and delves into the intimate and infinite world of our dreams. Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, who steals valuable secrets from deep within people’s subconscious during the dream state. It is this skill that has made him an outlaw and a coveted player in the treacherous world of corporate espionage. When he’s offered the chance of redemption, to do ‘just one last job’ to give him back his lost life, he must carry out the reverse - not stealing an idea but implanting one. + Guest panel discussion on Fri 27 Aug.

Mexican Film Season This series of events and rare films marks the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. Dr Tilmann Altenberg from Cardiff University joins us to explore a range of topics including the representation of Mexico and the hero of the people, General Pancho Villa. The remarkable films on offer range from historical footage and scarcely known cinematic masterpieces to Western classics. The opening event on Wed 1 Sept coincides with an international conference hosted by Cardiff University. www.cardiff.ac.uk/euros/newsandevents/events/mexrev2010.html

100 Years of the Mexican Revolution Wed 1 Sept • Mer 1 Medi

The Lost Reels of Pancho Villa Mexico/USA/Canada/2003/49mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: Gregorio Rocha.

+ Surviving fragments of Liberty, 1916, 8mins. + Surviving fragments of The Life of General Villa, 1914, 5mins. The Mexican Revolution was the first major historical event to be documented by cinematographers. In 1914, the legendary general Francisco ‘Pancho’ Villa signed a contract with Hollywood granting the right to film him on the battlefield. Even more surprisingly, Villa agreed to star in a film about his own life. Mexican filmmaker Gregorio Rocha presents this special event, which includes a screening of his award-winning documentary The Lost Reels Of Pancho Villa. He will also talk more generally about his work and introduce two surviving film fragments which have been preserved by the Library of Congress, Washington DC, and have never before been screened publicly.

Let’s Go with Pancho Villa (Vámonos con Pancho Villa) Sun 5 Sept • Sul 5 Medi Mexico/1935/92mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: Fernando de Fuentes. With Antonio R. Frausto, Domingo Soler.

Now considered by many to be the best film ever made in Mexico, this masterpiece went largely unnoticed on its release in 1936. Director Fernando de Fuentes tells the story of six friends, the ‘Lions of San Pablo‘, who join the troops of the already legendary Francisco ‘Pancho’ Villa. The Lions’ initial enthusiasm about being part of an exciting adventure soon fades before the grim reality of war. In scenes of great intensity and symbolic power, the absurdity of personal sacrifice takes centre stage. + Intro by Dr.Tilmann Altenberg.

Godfather Mendoza (El Compadre Mendoza) Sun 12 Sept • Sul 12 Medi Mexico/1934/85mins/subtitled/ctba. Dir: Fernando de Fuentes. With Alfredo del Diestro, Antonio R. Frausto, Carmen Guerrero.

This highly acclaimed film approaches the Mexican Revolution from the perspective of sly landowner Rosalío Mendoza, who successfully plays both opposing sides to his personal advantage. He eventually finds himself, however, trapped between his business interests and his friendship with a revolutionary who once saved his life. Godfather Mendoza explores the human dimension of the armed conflict in Mexico, going beyond stereotypes and finding humorous moments despite the tragic course of events. + Intro by Dr.Tilmann Altenberg.

The Wild Bunch Sun 19 Sept • Sul 19 Medi USA/1969/145mins/18. Dir: Sam Peckinpah. With William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan.

The Wild West has been tamed and easy money is getting harder to get, but a group of ageing outlaws aren’t ready to let go of their days of power and freedom. Joining forces to attempt one last big score, they hijack a US ammunition train crossing the border into Mexico to supply the revolutionary army of Pancho Villa. No one is innocent in Peckinpah’s much debated, ultra-violent tale of desperation against changing times.

“A true cinematic touchstone, the film has influenced a generation of moviemakers, from Scorcese to Tarantino to Hong Kong action king John Woo.” — San Francisco Chronicle

A Fistful of Dynamite Sun 26 Sept • Sul 26 Medi Italy/1971/138mins/15. Dir: Sergio Leone. With Rod Steiger, James Coburn, Romolo Valli, Maria Monti.

Also known as ‘Duck You Sucker’, taken from James Coburn’s catchphrase as the dynamite obsessed IRA outlaw John Mallory who teams up with Rod Steiger’s Juan, an amoral Mexican peasant-turned-revolutionary, to rob the great bank of Mesa Verde. Without Clint Eastwood’s ‘Man With No Name’, this is an often over-looked film from Leone but is an actionpacked, often humorous and morally ambiguous tale of power and politics.

“The most wry of the political spaghettis, and wholly wonderful.” — Time Out

Mother Fri 3 — Thu 9 Sept • Gwe 3 — Iau 9 Medi Korea/2010/128mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Bong Joon-Ho. With Kim Hye-ja, Bin Won, Ku Jin.

Nail-bitingly tense and brimming with humanity, Bong Joon-Ho’s (Memories of Murder and The Host) terrific film swept the board at the Asian Film Awards, winning Best Film, Best Script and Best Actress. This taut, unsentimental, Hitchcockian dissection of a mother defending her son at all costs remains consistently unpredictable right up to its supremely satisfying climax. When Kim Hye-ja’s nameless mother of the title discovers her 27 year old son, who suffers from learning difficulties, has been arrested for the murder of a young girl, she sets out to track down the real killer and prove her son’s innocence. Worth the admission for its life-affirming book-end dance sequences, this is a tour-de-force from a filmmaker at the very top of his game.

“Is any director in the world currently coming up with more surprises than Bong Joon-Ho?... luscious and blackly comic.” Tony Rayns, London Film Festival

Llygaid Sgwâr Gan Philip Wyn Jones Ar ôl chwarae rygbi proffesiynol, dechreuodd yr actor a chyfarwyddwr ffilmiau Ffrengig, Jacques Tati (1907 — 1982) ymddangos ar lwyfannau Ffrainc, fel perfformiwr meim. Tua diwedd y 1930au dechreuodd ffilmio ei berfformiadau ei hun a gwnaeth nifer o ffilmiau byrion eraill. Ei ffilm nodwedd bwysig gyntaf, ym 1947, oedd Jour de fête/ The Big Day; hanes postmon anobeithiol sy’n ymweld â ffair deithiol, yn meddwi, ac yna yn dosbarthu’r post ar gefn beic. Fe’i ffilmiwyd mewn system lliw arbrofol a thrafferthus ond hefyd mewn du a gwyn a’r ail fersiwn a ryddhawyd ar y pryd. Llwyddwyd i adfer y fersiwn lliw erbyn Gŵyl Ffilmiau Fenis ym 1995. Roedd 1953 yn flwyddyn bwysig yn hanes Tati. Dyma’r tro cyntaf i’r cyhoedd weld cymeriad pwysicaf Tati, fel actor a chyfarwyddwr, Monsieur Hulot. Daeth y gŵr afrosgo hwn — gyda’i got law, het a phib a’i anallu i gyfathrebu’n gall â phobl eraill — yn enwog ledled y byd. Roedd Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot yn dychanu ymddygiad Ffrancwyr ar eu gwyliau glan môr. Enwebwyd sgript Tati a’i gyd-awdur am Oscar. Ychydig o ddeialog ddealladwy sydd yn hon a’i ffilmiau eraill. Maen nhw’n gyfuniad o sefyllfaoedd digri, ystumiau hynod ac effeithiau sain pwrpasol. Ym 1958 dychanodd Mon Oncle obsesiwn y Ffrancwyr gyda phopeth modern. Enillodd Tati Oscar amdani, fel y ffilm orau mewn iaith dramor. Tua’r adeg yma lluniodd Tati sgript na chafodd ei ffilmio ganddo, L’Illusionniste. Ynddi disgrifir y berthynas rhwng consuriwr aflwyddiannus a gwraig ifanc sy’n credu yn ei allu. Roedd y sgript yn anrheg neu ‘lythyr’ i’w ferch hynaf, Helga. Roedd Tati, fe ddywedir, wedi troi ei gefn arni adeg y rhyfel ac roedd y ‘llythyr’ yma yn ymdrech ar ei ran i wneud iawn am hynny. Tati ei hun, fe awgrymir, oedd y consuriwr a Helga oedd y wraig ifanc. Treuliodd Tati y naw mlynedd nesaf yn paratoi ei ffilm fwyaf uchelgeisiol a drudfawr, Playtime (1967). Adeiladodd set anferth ar gyrion Paris i gynrychioli dinas gyfan. Mae Monsieur Hulot yn mynd ar goll yng nghanol yr holl foderniaeth amhersonol ac oeraidd. Er bod y beirniaid yn canmol Playtime, cadwodd y cyhoedd draw ac roedd Tati yn wynebu argyfwng ariannol enbyd. Roedd Trafic (1971) yn ffilm ratach o lawer. Dyma ffilm boblogaidd olaf Tati a’r tro olaf i Monsieur Hulot ymddangos. Yn hon mae’n honni ei fod yn ddyfeisydd ceir trawiadol. O dro i dro bu sôn am ffilmio L’Illusionniste. Roedd merch ieuengaf Tati, Sophie, yn mynnu na ddylai unrhyw actor bortreadu ei thad a dyna paham y penderfynwyd gwneud ffilm animeiddiedig. I’w chyfarwyddo dewiswyd Sylvain Chomet oedd wedi cyfarwyddo Belleville Rendezvous (2003). Cafodd y rhan fwyaf o’r gwaith ei wneud yn ei stiwdio yng Nghaeredin. Caeredin y 1950au hwyr yw cefndir y ffilm a fersiwn animeiddiedig o Tati yw’r prif gymeriad. Eisoes cafodd L’ Illusionniste / The Illusionist ganmoliaeth uchel ond dyw pawb ddim yn hapus. Mae Richard, mab Helga, wedi mynegi ei ddicter yn gyhoeddus. Ei fam, meddai, oedd prif ysbrydoliaeth sgript Tati. Does dim cyfeiriad ati ar y sgrin nac yng nghyhoeddusrwydd y ffilm. The Illusionist Fri 3 — Thu 9 Sept Gwe 3 — Iau 9 Medi France/UK/2010/80mins/PG. Dir: Sylvain Chomet.

This magical animation from the team that brought us Belleville Rendezvous is based on an unproduced script originally written by French mime artist, director and actor Jacques Tati in 1956 for his illegitimate, estranged daughter. A struggling illusionist, Monsieur Tatischeff, travels to Edinburgh to try his luck with a new audience. On the way, he meets a young girl Alice in a remote Scottish fishing village who’s so impressed with his abilities (she believes them to be magical powers) that she becomes his assistant as well as his surrogate daughter. The Illusionist is a love letter to 1950s Edinburgh, with the city’s distinctive architecture and changeable weather all painted in an evocative watercolour palette. The gorgeous handdrawn animation delivers a defiant rebuttal to the 3D generation.

The Girl Who Played with Fire

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Fri 10 — Thu 23 Sept • Gwe 10 — Iau 23 Medi

Fri 10 — Sun 12 Sept • Gwe 10 — Sul 12 Medi

Sweden/2010/129mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Daniel Alfredson. With Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace.

The second film adaptation from Stieg Larsson’s bestselling Millennium trilogy (The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets’ Nest will be here later this year) finds Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist under fire in another brutal murder investigation. Blomkvist returns to Millennium magazine and is intent on exposing a billion dollar sex trafficking ring. He’s making headway with his enquiries when two of his researchers are murdered, and Salander becomes the police’s chief suspect. Unconvinced, Blomkvist attempts to track her down, but the secretive hacker has gone on the run, along the way stumbling across secrets that are shockingly close to home. As addictive as the trilogy of novels on which they’re based, this second film is just as dark and compelling as the first. See p17 for details of a Coffee Shop Debate which compares the work of Stieg Larsson with that of Tolstoy.

Sweden/2009/152mins/subtitled/18. Dir: Niels Arden Opley. With Michael Nyqvist, Noomi Rapace, Peter Andersson.

In anticipation of the second installment of the Millennium trilogy, we’re bringing back the first film to get you in the mood. When the head of the powerful Vanger dynasty employs a young journalist and a computer hacker to investigate the possible murder of his niece, the pair link her disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from forty years ago and begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan and the duo soon discover just how far the dysfunctional family are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Metropolis

Sat 11 + Sun 12 Sept • Sad 11 + Sul 12 Medi

Germany/1927/145mins/intertitled/PG. Dir: Fritz Lang. With Alfred Abel, Gustav Frohlich, Rudolf Klein-Rogge.

Perhaps the most famous German film of all time, Lang’s silent classic has been revised, re-edited and released a number of times over the years, but this new restoration is almost certainly the most complete and authentic version. Metropolis takes place in 2026, where people are divided into two groups: poor workers living beneath the ground and the rich who enjoy a futuristic city of luxury. The tense balance between the societies is realised through images that are among the most famous of the 20th century, many of which pre-empt such science fiction classics as Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. Lavish and spectacular, with elaborate sets and jaw-dropping production values, Metropolis stands as a testament to Lang’s ambitious vision of what cinema could be.

Double CL1C card points

This is a fascinating documentary about how Manhattan-based Colin Beavan decides to completely eliminate his personal impact on the environment for a year. Eating only vegetarian, locally bought food and turning off the refrigerator, he also eschews the use of elevators, television, cosmetics, buses, electricity and generates no rubbish. But when his espresso-addicted, retail worshipping wife and their two-year-old daughter are dragged into the fray, the project has an unforeseen impact in a challenging, but also very positive way.

Alex makes his living as a well-paid ‘heartbreaker’, hired by friends and family to disrupt unsuitable relationships and encourage the woman to come to the conclusion that she doesn’t have to put up with second best. The immaculately tailored Alex deploys an arsenal of tactics best suited to spying, including phone-tapping, fake identities and, of course, his devastating charm. But when he’s hired to avert the marriage of Juliette, a beautiful, quirky heiress, he may just have met his match. This time, love may interfere with his plans and the heart he breaks may turn out to be his own. A thoroughly charming and stylish romantic comedy.

Dog Pound Fri 17 — Thu 23 Sept • Gwe 17 — Iau 23 Medi UK/France/2010/91mins/18. Dir: Kim Chapiron. With Adam Butcher, Shane Kippel, Mateo Morales.

Three juvenile delinquents arrive at a correctional centre and are put under the care of an experienced guard. An electrifying cast delivers blistering performances packed with intensity and emotional punch that reveals the deficiencies of a well-intentioned but ultimately failing penal system. Kim Chapiron (Sheitan), one of France’s brightest emerging directors, powerfully evokes the grittiness of Alan Clarke’s 1979 crime drama Scum to lend a contemporary glimpse into how more than 60 percent of the 100,000 children locked away in juvenile detention centres across North America become repeat offenders.

Mon 13 — Thu 16 Sept • Llun 13 — Iau 16 Medi

Wed 22 Sept • Mer 22 Medi Earthfall’s artistic directors Jessica Cohen and Jim Ennis have always been intrigued and seduced by film, not only in the traditional sense, but also when using filmic language in their choreography. Alongside their many dance productions Earthfall have produced 4 short dance films to date, which include the BAFTA award winning Too Old to Dream and BAFTA nominated Gravitas Postcards (directed by Chris Forster). This special screening also includes shorts from groundbreaking filmmakers Chris Lewis-Smith and Russell Frampton & Ruth Way.

France/USA /2010/130mins/subtitled/15. Dir: Joann Sfar. With Eric Elmosnino, Lucy Gordon, Laetitia Casta.

Based on his own graphic novel, Joann Sfar wrote and directed this unique and enjoyable film of the life of one of France’s most influential artists. Growing up in wartime Paris the young Lucien Ginsburg escaped from both Nazi and selfpersecution by embarking on a career in the arts, resulting in him becoming a celebrated songwriter. But it was only through his relationships and affairs with the likes of France Gall, Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin that he became a veritable force in music and French popular culture. Despite this success, his life and career remained turbulent as he provoked the establishment while blazing a musical trail that has continued to inspire generations ever since. Eric Elmosnino is terrific as the peculiar and complex lead in this visually beautiful and often fantastical film.

The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog Sun 26 Sept • Sul 26 Medi UK/1926/75mins/PG. Dir: Alfred Hitchcock. With Ivor Novello, Malcolm Keen, Daisy Bunting.

London is being terrorised by a Jack the Ripper-style murderer, The Avenger, who targets young blonde women. When a mysterious new lodger arrives at the home of Mr and Mrs Bunting and shows an interest in their daughter Daisy, the family and the local policeman become suspicious. This was Hitchcock’s first thriller, and features the first actress to turn blonde at his insistence and his first signature cameo. This screening is accompanied by the Harmonie Band, whose emotive musical score references 1920s dance bands, opera, horror film soundtracks and echoes of American minimalism. £9/£7

Shop open: Tue — Sat 10am-8pm, Sun 2-8pm. Closed Monday.

Summer might be drawing to a close, but we have a nice selection of items to keep you cosy as the autumn nights draw in. Warm up your interior décor with some twinkling flower lights or tea lights, held safely in our beautiful new silver holders. Brew yourself a soothing cuppa in one of our teapots, kept at the perfect temperature with a stylish balaclava pot warmer. How about cwtching up on the sofa with a good book? We’ve just received our copies of Nobrow, an independent, limited edition publication featuring diverse and talented global illustrators. These books are not only filled with great work, but are art objects themselves, to be coveted, collected and cherished. We’re now selling Ultrasauros pin badges in the shop. These miniature dinos have been especially commissioned to coincide with the Luna Park project which runs throughout September in Southsea, Hampshire and comes to Cardiff next spring. As always, if there’s something you’d like us to stock please let me know. Jemma, Shop Supervisor

Café open: Mon — Sat 8.30am-9.30pm Sun 9.30am-9.30pm Breakfast: 9-11.30am (Sun 10am-12pm) Lunch: 11.30-3pm Main Menu: 12-9pm

Our delicious, revamped menu has been up for a few weeks, so I hope we’ve tempted you with a few of the new dishes. Back by popular demand, are our homemade smoked haddock and spring onion fishcakes served with seasonal salad and homemade tartare sauce. Or why not try a chicken and chorizo salad with herby mixed peppers or a delicious homemade lamb kebab served with pita, homemade salsa, garlic sauce and salad. As some of you may have noticed, the butternut squash and beetroot salad has disappeared, and I’ve already had requests to put it back on. Fear not! It will return in the autumn. The quality of the squash at the moment is so poor that I wasn’t happy to serve it. We’ve replaced it with a warm cannellini bean, sun-blushed tomato, roasted red pepper, spinach and basil salad topped with pine nuts. Something a bit different — why not give it a try? Lex, Café Manager

Drink • Yfed After the great reaction we had to our first ever Cider & Perry Palooza in July, I thought it would be good to feature one of the local ciders on our cask pumps. Welsh Perry and Cider Championships award-winner Blindfold (5%ABV) is a medium cider brewed at Blaengawney Farm in Hafodyrynys, Gwent, less than 20 miles from our front door. It’s the perfect tipple for relaxing on the patio in the early autumnal sunshine with a Chapter ploughman’s, I’m sure you’ll agree. www.blaengawneycider.co.uk Bar open: Sat 12pm-12am, Sun 12-10.30pm, Mon-Thu 12-11pm, Fri 12pm-12.30am.

Dave, Bar Manager Free wireless internet is available in Caffi Bar Chapter.
