There’s a lot going on… The stunning photos on the opposite page, taken by local photographer Dan Green, are a glimpse of one evening in July when South Wales Intercultural Community Arts brought a taste of carnival from around the world to Chapter. It was a great night and just one example of what we know you love about us — there’s always something happening. And that’s not just in the cinema, theatre and gallery — there are always lots of free events taking place in every nook and cranny of the building. September is no exception. Early in the month (Tue 7 Sept) you’ll find the next Coffee Shop Debate happening in the Theatre Foyer. This month the awardwinning poet Ifor Thomas proclaims that the Swedish novelist Stieg Larsson is the Tolstoy of our age. Do you agree? Come along and join the debate, you’ll find more details on p17. Larsson’s Millennium trilogy of dark crime thrillers have also been adapted for the big screen, two of which can be seen here this month (The Girl who Played with Fire and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo both screen from Fri 10 Sept, see p27). And if you love books and love films too, there’s a Larsson connection in the first of our new Adaptations club — read the book, see the film and discuss both. See p27 for details. Some of you will already be big fans of the BBC Radio Wales hit comedy The LL Files and this month you’ve got a chance to be in the audience (see p17). Or is jazz or jewellery more your thing? For jewellery try the gallery shop or come along to Make it Pretty, the second outing at Chapter for this eclectic craft and fashion fair (Sat 25 Sept). For jazz you can’t beat our cinema’s very own Glen Manby, a great way to end the week or get ready for the next (Sun 26 Sept). And there’ll be lots more things that ‘just happen’. Magic Show Until Sun 12 Sept • Tan Sul 12 Medi Art, like magic, aims to interrupt and overturn everyday notions of reality. Magic Show demonstrates how visual artists draw upon the perceptionshifting tactics of the theatrical magician to explore questions of creative agency, the power of suggestion and the fragility of belief. Artists may manipulate and mystify, not simply to entertain, but to reveal fundamental relationships between matter and mind, knowledge and perception. The exhibition features work by 24 international artists in a wide range of media, from video and performance to sculptural installation. It also includes an historical archive of rarely seen props, paraphernalia and imagery from the world of theatrical magic, underlining the themes of conflict, belief and coercion that resonate throughout the exhibition. Just as the secular magician can throw our understanding of the world into disarray with carefully deployed sleights of hand, art too flourishes in the gap between fact and fiction. Magic Show highlights include Zoë Beloff’s 3D video installation (complete with glasses) which features a vaudeville-style performance of two case studies from early 20th-century psychopathology; The Center for Tactical Magic’s ‘Ultimate Jacket’, which has 50 pockets for optimum concealment and retrieval and is being worn by our gallery assistants; João Maria Gusmão & Pedro Paiva’s poetic and metaphysical films featuring trees, rocks, water and rope behaving strangely and disobeying rational natural laws; Susan Hiller’s selection of found photographs of people levitating; and Sinta Werner’s installations which mimic architectural features in the gallery to distort space and trick your eye. And don’t forget to take a look at the amazing ‘card finding duck’, a staple of TV magicians in the 1970s, this one actually belonged to the late, great Tommy Cooper. Assembly: Art in the Bar Stuart Bailes — Of Walking in Ice Until Fri 3 Sept • Tan Gwe 3 Medi Stuart Bailes’ work is inspired by a deep fascination with the land. Using simple visual gestures, objects or captured moments, he explores how we understand our physical surroundings, and reflects on the discrepancies between true experiences and how they are ultimately perceived. Of Walking in Ice is a series of photographs exploring the idea of experience as an imagined perception. The images are studio reconstructions of objects that Bailes has documented while walking in Wales, England, Scotland, Iceland and Norway. There are limitations to how a photograph can represent a physical experience; and Bailes addresses this by reducing the space within the images to prompt you to re-examine what you think you know.

Stuart Bailes was born in 1985 in Bath and graduated from the University of Wales, Newport in 2007. He is based in London and has just completed his MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art. Recent exhibitions include Freshfacedandwildeyed 08, The Photographers Gallery, London; Future 50, PSL, Leeds; ArtswayOpen09, Artsway, Hampshire and Hal Silver, The Russian Club, London. In 2009 he was selected as Magenta Foundation’s Flashforward09 UK winner resulting in an international touring group show. He has been selected by Jotta Contemporary to show at the 2010 Affordable Art Fair; and has just received the Hooper’s Gallery Award for his MA graduate exhibition in London.

Deborah Withers Adventures in Kate Bush and Theory Thu 2 Sept • 8pm • Iau 2 Medi Drawing on elements of feminism, queer theory, post-colonial theory and fairy tales, Deborah Withers uses the music, film, video and dance of Kate Bush to explore ideas of subjectivity and the body. This performance/lecture includes material from Withers’ new book, and attempts to unravel the mystery and complexity in Kate Bush’s art, from her debut ‘Wuthering Heights’ to her most recent album ‘Aerial’. Withers’ acclaimed work breaks down boundaries between the academic and popular, presenting theoretical interpretations that are lively, engaging and funny. £6/£5/£4

Gary Coyle At Sea Fri 3 Sept • 8pm • Gwe 3 Medi Every day for the past decade acclaimed Irish artist Gary Coyle has gone for a swim at the Forty Foot in Sandycove, a famous swimming hole in Dun Laoghaire, south of Dublin. During his 10 year swim-a-thon he has kept a record of his experiences through detailed diaries and photographs. At Sea explores one man’s observations of the places of his youth, obsessive swimming, death and performance art. £6/£5/£4

Mardi Gras These two events and the Iris Prize Festival launch (see p24) are part of Cardiff’s LGBT Mardi Gras Festival. The main party event takes place on Sat 4 Sept at Coopers Field, welcoming people from all walks of life regardless of age, gender, colour or sexuality. The main stage is supported by cabaret, dance arena, and disco stages, a fairground, market stalls, family area and a health and wellbeing area. Marega Palser Sat 18 Sept • 6-9pm • Sad 18 Medi Marega Palser is well known at Chapter for her extraordinary performances as part of the inimitable Mr and Mrs Clark, and for her Art in the Bar exhibition in 2008. This short exhibition of drawings, prints and animation also features a series of dance/performance sketches. Palser’s images have a direct link to dance and performance, where the dance has stimulated the drawing and the drawing in turn inspired the dance. The work plays with the idea of the impermanence of the body in motion made permanent in the drawn/printed image. Free

Ruth Jones Vigil Preview: Tue 7 Sept • 6-8pm • Maw 7 Medi Wed 8 — Sat 11 Sept • 3-8.30pm • Mer 8 — Sad 11 Medi Ruth Jones’ recent video installations and public art projects have focused on the relationships between humans, animals and the land, and explored the magnetic pull that particular places have on people. Vigil examines the presence that Strumble Head Lighthouse has on the landscape in North Pembrokeshire. The lighthouse was built in 1908, and its rotating beam can be seen for thirty miles in all directions. Every lighthouse has its own distinctive ‘character’, recognised by a pattern and duration of flashes, in this case, one flash every two seconds four times, followed by seven seconds of darkness. Jones’ project suggests that this rhythm has permeated the land for over a hundred years, seeping into the psyche of its inhabitants. The installation also portrays the lighthouse as a threshold place, situated between land and sea, day and night and the human and animal kingdoms. Using Strumble’s regulated light pattern as a guide for editing both picture and sound, Jones’ film invites a quiet contemplation of the internal and external rhythms that influence our daily experiences, rituals and memories. Talking To Wordsworth Gillian Clarke is the current National Poet of Wales and this beautifully written play is based on her experiences of reading poetry in schools, hospitals and day care centres. The play was first broadcast by BBC Wales from the stage of the Sherman Theatre. + Wishful Thinking A revival of Hijinx Theatre’s highly-charged play, featuring music, song... and shopping in Tesco. Madhvi & Aparna Sharma Momentum Thu 16 Sept • 8pm • Iau 16 Medi Dancer/choreographer Madhvi and film theorist/documentary artist Aparna Sharma return to Chapter with a new production. Momentum questions the style and austerity of traditions, especially the classical Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam. Through dance, projected images and live music, the performers reflect on and articulate their own experiences of migration and movement as second generation women of South Asian descent in Britain and America. £10/£8/£6

Olion Byw is Lucy Rivers and Dan Lawrence, whose beautiful mix of fiddle, mandolin, guitar and voice lends a haunting slant to their Welsh folk material. Sild is the Estonian singer, fiddler and hiiu-kannel (ancient bowed harp) player Sille Ilves and innovative Welsh guitarist Martin Leamon. Together they create an exquisite and timeless marriage of Estonian and Welsh musical cultures. Strikingly original, Sille’s use of different tunings sends the Estonian tradition in adventurous new directions. For this performance they are joined on Celtic harp, trombone and voice by Ceri Owen-Jones. £10/£8/£6

This new collaboration combines video, music, text, action and sound to question the chaotic pace of today’s society: the ever increasing noise, information overload and the disappearance of the act of listening in daily life. Director Jill Greenhalgh has gathered an international team of renowned artists to contribute to this new work: cellist Nicola Thomas (Wales), performance and video artist Zoe Christiansen (Norway), performer Eddie Ladd (Wales) and writer Margaret Cameron (Australia). Greenhalgh’s most recent theatre work at Chapter, The Acts Vigia, explored how performance could respond to the brutal femicide occurring on the Mexico/US border. In doing so, they uncover their deepest regrets, unleash their hidden desires and cast a final judgement on the world to which they belonged. Five Easy Steps (to the end of the world) is a portrait of a civilisation in crisis and a plea for human solidarity in the face of our triumphs and follies. Zuppa is an ensemble theatre company from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Every show is a wild flight through genres, familiar stories and the unknown, created through a unique collaborative process that favours intuition over formula. Paul Granjon Black Box Ni Sat 9 Oct • 8pm • Sad 9 Hyd Wearing a special interactive costume, Chapterbased artist Paul Granjon delivers his most recent performance work focusing on the latest developments of military robotics. However, during the course of his presentation a mysterious electronic black box sends radio-wave commands to the costume, interrupting the smooth flow of his delivery. He has to complete a mission for the black box before resuming his human activities. Black Box Ni is Paul Granjon’s latest reflection on the co-evolution of humans and machines. This year’s Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winner is a skilful blend of love story, crime thriller and legal drama with a distinctly Latin flavour in its sweeping melodrama and emotive, showstopper scenes. The generous running time allows the film to fully explore the central love affair of female District Attorney, Irene, and criminal investigator, Sandoval. Neatly entwined around their story is Sandoval’s obsession with the unsolved case of a murderer who has escaped justice through a mix of police corruption and mysterious disappearance. A heady mélange of violence, baroque styling and sentimentality, this is a thriller deeply in debt to the lush rhythms of Almodovar and the tougher genre elements of South American cinema such as Nine Queens.

After ten years of trying, director Michael Whyte was given unprecedented access to a monastery in Notting Hill to produce a unique depiction of an alternative, spiritual way of life. This extraordinary documentary unveils the hidden world of the Carmelite Nuns of the Most Holy Trinity and provides a rare glimpse into their lives of prayer and contemplation. Silence is maintained throughout the day with the exception of 40 minutes of social recreation in the morning and evening. The nuns leave the monastery only to visit the doctor or dentist; they cook all their own food and wear their own handmade clothes.

Mexican Film Season This series of events and rare films marks the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. Dr Tilmann Altenberg from Cardiff University joins us to explore a range of topics including the representation of Mexico and the hero of the people, General Pancho Villa. The remarkable films on offer range from historical footage and scarcely known cinematic masterpieces to Western classics. The Mexican Revolution was the first major historical event to be documented by cinematographers. In 1914, the legendary general Francisco ‘Pancho’ Villa signed a contract with Hollywood granting the right to film him on the battlefield. Even more surprisingly, Villa agreed to star in a film about his own life. Mexican filmmaker Gregorio Rocha presents this special event, which includes a screening of his award-winning documentary The Lost Reels Of Pancho Villa. He will also talk more generally about his work and introduce two surviving film fragments which have been preserved by the Library of Congress, Washington DC, and have never before been screened publicly.

Now considered by many to be the best film ever made in Mexico, this masterpiece went largely unnoticed on its release in 1936. Director Fernando de Fuentes tells the story of six friends, the ‘Lions of San Pablo‘, who join the troops of the already legendary Francisco ‘Pancho’ Villa. The Lions’ initial enthusiasm about being part of an exciting adventure soon fades before the grim reality of war. In scenes of great intensity and symbolic power, the absurdity of personal sacrifice takes centre stage. + Intro by Dr.Tilmann Altenberg.

Also known as ‘Duck You Sucker’, taken from James Coburn’s catchphrase as the dynamite obsessed IRA outlaw John Mallory who teams up with Rod Steiger’s Juan, an amoral Mexican peasant-turned-revolutionary, to rob the great bank of Mesa Verde. Without Clint Eastwood’s ‘Man With No Name’, this is an often over-looked film from Leone but is an actionpacked, often humorous and morally ambiguous tale of power and politics.

Iris Prize Festival Launch

This magical animation from the team that brought us Belleville Rendezvous is based on an unproduced script originally written by French mime artist, director and actor Jacques Tati in 1956 for his illegitimate, estranged daughter. A struggling illusionist, Monsieur Tatischeff, travels to Edinburgh to try his luck with a new audience. On the way, he meets a young girl Alice in a remote Scottish fishing village who’s so impressed with his abilities (she believes them to be magical powers) that she becomes his assistant as well as his surrogate daughter. The Illusionist is a love letter to 1950s Edinburgh, with the city’s distinctive architecture and changeable weather all painted in an evocative watercolour palette. The gorgeous handdrawn animation delivers a defiant rebuttal to the 3D generation.

The second film adaptation from Stieg Larsson’s bestselling Millennium trilogy (The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets’ Nest will be here later this year) finds Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist under fire in another brutal murder investigation. Blomkvist returns to Millennium magazine and is intent on exposing a billion dollar sex trafficking ring. He’s making headway with his enquiries when two of his researchers are murdered, and Salander becomes the police’s chief suspect. Unconvinced, Blomkvist attempts to track her down, but the secretive hacker has gone on the run, along the way stumbling across secrets that are shockingly close to home. As addictive as the trilogy of novels on which they’re based, this second film is just as dark and compelling as the first. In anticipation of the second installment of the Millennium trilogy, we’re bringing back the first film to get you in the mood. When the head of the powerful Vanger dynasty employs a young journalist and a computer hacker to investigate the possible murder of his niece, the pair link her disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from forty years ago and begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan and the duo soon discover just how far the dysfunctional family are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Perhaps the most famous German film of all time, Lang’s silent classic has been revised, re-edited and released a number of times over the years, but this new restoration is almost certainly the most complete and authentic version. Metropolis takes place in 2026, where people are divided into two groups: poor workers living beneath the ground and the rich who enjoy a futuristic city of luxury. The tense balance between the societies is realised through images that are among the most famous of the 20th century, many of which pre-empt such science fiction classics as Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. Lavish and spectacular, with elaborate sets and jaw-dropping production values, Metropolis stands as a testament to Lang’s ambitious vision of what cinema could be.

This is a fascinating documentary about how Manhattan-based Colin Beavan decides to completely eliminate his personal impact on the environment for a year. Eating only vegetarian, locally bought food and turning off the refrigerator, he also eschews the use of elevators, television, cosmetics, buses, electricity and generates no rubbish. But when his espresso-addicted, retail worshipping wife and their two-year-old daughter are dragged into the fray, the project has an unforeseen impact in a challenging, but also very positive way.

Based on his own graphic novel, Joann Sfar wrote and directed this unique and enjoyable film of the life of one of France’s most influential artists. Growing up in wartime Paris the young Lucien Ginsburg escaped from both Nazi and selfpersecution by embarking on a career in the arts, resulting in him becoming a celebrated songwriter. But it was only through his relationships and affairs with the likes of France Gall, Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin that he became a veritable force in music and French popular culture. Despite this success, his life and career remained turbulent as he provoked the establishment while blazing a musical trail that has continued to inspire generations ever since. Eric Elmosnino is terrific as the peculiar and complex lead in this visually beautiful and often fantastical film.

Back by popular demand, are our homemade smoked haddock and spring onion fishcakes served with seasonal salad and homemade tartare sauce. Or why not try a chicken and chorizo salad with herby mixed peppers or a delicious homemade lamb kebab served with pita, homemade salsa, garlic sauce and salad. As some of you may have noticed, the butternut squash and beetroot salad has disappeared, and I’ve already had requests to put it back on. Fear not! It will return in the autumn. The quality of the squash at the moment is so poor that I wasn’t happy to serve it. How to get to Chapter

Ar yr M4 o’r gorllewin: Dewch oddi ar y draffordd ar gyffordd 33 a dilynwch yr arwyddion ar gyfer yr A4232; wedi 6.3 milltir dewch oddi ar y ffordd ar Ffordd Lecwydd, tuag at Stadiwm newydd Clwb Pêl-Droed Caerdydd; ewch yn eich blaen ac yna trowch i’r chwith ar Cowbridge Road East; mae Heol y Farchnad ar y dde; mae maes parcio Chapter ar y dde.

Chapter is situated in Canton, behind Cowbridge Road East, between Llandaff Road and Market Road. We are easily accessible from the city centre. Overflow car parking is available after 6pm at Cardiff Community Learning Services adjacent to the car park at Chapter. Alternative nearby car parks are shown above. Number 17, 18 and 33 buses leave every five minutes from the City Centre. From the east on M4: Take exit 29 onto the A48; after 6 miles turn slight left onto A4119/ Mill Lane; then left onto Cardiff Road; continue straight onto B4267/Llandaff Rd; after 300m turn right onto Market Place; take next right onto Market Road; Chapter car park is on the right. From the west on M4: Take exit 33 and follow signs onto A4232; after 6.3 miles exit onto Leckwith Rd, towards the new Cardiff City Stadium; keep straight until turning left onto Cowbridge Road E; Market Rd is on your right; Chapter car park is on the right.
