Welcome

Welcome to your guide to all that’s in store for September. It’s time to get those school uniforms aired and bags packed for the new term, and for many it’s time to make that journey to college or university. Here at Chapter we’ve a student membership which provides some fab offers to ease you in to academic life. For more details see page 13. Did you catch Waking Exploits’ popular show, Love and Money, last year? Well they’re back with award-winning writer Gary Owen’s breakthrough hit, Crazy Gary’s Mobile Disco. The play takes us to a small Welsh town on a standard Saturday night and paints a razor sharp portrait of masculinity in crisis (p11). Our cinema provides a bit of a haven for music fans with our popular Cinephonic programme (p19). We’ll be screening 20,000 Days on Earth; a day in the life of the brilliant Nick Cave, and enjoying a special live performance via satellite from the Barbican Centre by the man himself, plus a Q&A with the film’s directors on Wed 17 Sep. Also, Finding Fela takes a bold look at the life, music and politics of Fela Kuti, the inimitable founder of Afrobeat and a giant of Nigerian music. September sees the end of our Gallery exhibition by Christoph Dettmeier (p4–5), which explores the way in which we commemorate the First World War, and the impact the war has had on our popular culture. Catch it while you still can! Thanks for reading and see you soon.

Christoph Dettmeier: Happy Birthday Exhibition: until Sun 21 Sep Performance: Friday 19 September, 7pm The gravity of WWI helped the relatively new medium of film gain wider acceptance as newsreels brought pictures from the battleground to the home front — under the propagandist control of the state. After the war, German filmmakers were eager to transform the vehicle of mass entertainment into an art form in dialogue with the avant-garde and the horror and science fiction genres are widely seen as originating in Germany. Weimar film culture represents some of the most prominent examples of this era of so called ‘Shell Shock Cinema’: The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920), Nosferatu (1922), Metropolis (1927), to name just a few. Such films were seminal in articulating an indirect but more poignant understanding of trauma than traditional war movies and in translating the experience of war with a proliferation of living dead, zombies, vampires, somnambulists and others emerging as means of expressing the ‘lost generations’ feelings and a rise in distrust in both filmic and photographic documentation. ‘Happy Birthday’ — Dettmeier’s first solo exhibition in the UK — takes as it’s starting point these significant shifts in culture and identity during and in the aftermath of World War 1 and playfully excavates what it might mean, in 2014, to mark one hundred years since the start of the war. More information available at www.christoph-dettmeier.de

Talk at 2

Sat 13 Sep 2pm Our ‘Talks at 2’ are on every other Saturday during exhibitions and are hosted by our artist Live Guides Richard Higlett and Samuel Hasler. They provide an opportunity to discover more about the current exhibition and the artists’ approach to making art. No two talks are the same, while we hope they’re always insightful and open. Talks at 2 are free of charge and there’s no need to book in advance — just turn up at the Gallery and join in! FREE

Tooth & Clawr Tue 9 Sep 7pm

Tooth and Clawr is a reading group based around Chapter’s Gallery programme. We focus on reading short excerpts of texts which are selected from a wide range of sources — from critical texts to poetry — and use these as a basis for a discussion about the exhibition. These informal sessions are led by Catherine Angle and Phil Owen and do not require any previous knowledge of art theory. We choose texts that we feel resonate with aspects of the artwork on show and encourage you to do the same — whether it’s a piece of writing of your own, or one you have found — all contributions are welcome. £3

Intrigued by the imagery of Shell Shock Cinema and references to early science fiction? We’ll be screening ‘The Cabinet of Dr Caligari’ from Friday 29 August to Monday 1 September, see page 15 for details.

Exhibition open: Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday 12-6pm; Thursday & Friday 12-8pm; closed Monday

ART IN THE BAR Bob and Roberta Smith: All Schools Should Be Art Schools Until Sun 12 Oct ‘Art, images, artifacts, songs; culture are the principal means by which Human beings define themselves.’ Bob and Roberta Smith, Letter to Michael Gove, 2011 Following the death of Lucian Freud and Amy Winehouse in 2011, Bob and Roberta Smith wrote an open letter to Michael Gove expressing his deep concerns and frustrations with political decision making, state education and the proposed introduction of the EBacc — the English Baccalaureate — which would see Art, Design and Music side-lined in secondary education. Fuelled further by the increase in student tuition fees, currently capped at £9000 per year, Smith’s letter champions Britain’s creative and cultural diversity. Following on from this letter and now gathering support from fellow artists, students and educators, Smith organised the Art Party Conference in

Scarborough in 2013, a joyous celebration of art and a significant event where those who attended discussed the importance of art in education and in wider society. The day also included performances, films, music, lectures, seminars, comedy acts and podium speeches as well as a protest march to the venue where participants were encouraged to make their own banners and placards. All Schools Should Be Art Schools is taken from one of Smith’s trademark hand painted signs. Commonly painted onto scraps of wood and roughly nailed together Bob and Roberta Smith’s messages are often political or social provocations aimed to instigate debate whilst simultaneously being humorous in their delivery. Colourful and bold, the sign’s aesthetic borrows heavily from folk art and are suggestive of makeshift notices and early punk protest movements.

Coming Soon!

Artes Mundi 6 Fri 24 Oct — Sun 22 Feb Carlos Bunga, Omer Fast, Theaster Gates, Sanja Iveković, Ragnar Kjartansson, Sharon Lockhart, Renata Lucas, Renzo Martens and the Institute of Human Activity, Karen Mirza and Brad Butler. We’re delighted to once again partner with Artes Mundi to present a core exhibition of works by some of this year’s Artes Mundi 6 shortlisted artists. The shortlist features a diverse selection of international artists spanning different generations and cultures but sharing important global themes. These include investigations into the politics of institutional and urban space and social control in the works of Renata Lucas, Carlos Bunga and Theaster Gates. Sanja Iveković, Omer Fast and Renzo Martens continue this thread but more specifically address media representation and manipulation. Many of the artists on the shortlist work in collaboration with individuals and communities. For example, Sharon Lockhart’s poetic films and photographs involve working closely with her subjects over a long period of time, whilst the work of Karen Mirza and Brad Butler questions what we mean by collaboration and participation in their practice which includes film, performance, curating and publishing. Ragnar Kjartansson’s work also involves collaboration, often with musicians through

performance and installations through which he explores themes of friendship, human emotions, love and beauty. All these artists use a wide range of media, actions and strategies to comment on what it means to be human in contemporary society. The artists were chosen from more than 800 nominations by two invited selectors: Adam Budak, an independent curator currently based in Washington and Sabine Schaschl, Director and Curator of Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich. They particularly looked for artists whose work explores and comments on the human condition and lived experience. The exhibition opens to the public on October 24th 2014 and the remaining shortlisted artists will present work at National Museum Cardiff and Ffotogallery, Penarth. Details will be announced shortly, as well as events and exciting performances that will take place at the three exhibition venues and other sites across the city. France/2013/96mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Roman Polanski. With: Emmanuelle Seigner, Mathieu Amalric.

Germany/1920/66mins/silent with intertitles/U. Dir: Robert Wiene. With: Werner Krauss, Conrad Veidt, Lil Dagover.

Writer-director Thomas is alone in a Paris theatre, where he has been struggling to fill the lead part of a dominatrix for his new play, when he meets Vanda. Trashy and desperate, she seems to be far from perfect but when Thomas reluctantly agrees to let her try out for the part, he is captivated by her transformation. As the audition builds momentum the relationship moves from attraction to obsession until the balance of power shifts completely. A subversive, subtle and darkly funny comment on gender, sexuality and performance.

Francis is enticed into an exhibition at the fair that will have a sinister, life-changing effect. When Dr Caligari awakens psychic sleepwalker Cesare from his slumber to predict the future, the prophecy is terrifying and in the days that follow the village falls prey to a series of unsolved murders. With the killer fast closing in on Francis’ fiancée Jane, the brave husband-to-be must uncover the secret of Dr Caligari’s strange powers before she suffers a grim fate.

Babs Johnson is a flashy criminal on the lam from the FBI, hiding out in a trailer with her egg-obsessed mother, degenerate son Crackers and the sinister Cotton. Taking pride in her status as the ‘Filthiest Person Alive’ she is not impressed when the hateful couple Connie and Raymond Marble try to take the title away from her. Featuring a dizzying variety of sexual perversions this film thrust Divine and John Waters into the hearts of the filthy filmmaking world.

Sat 27 Sep

Francine Fishpaw is a housewife whose life has become a living hell. Her philandering husband runs a porno theatre, her children are delinquents and even her dog commits suicide. But then the handsome, art house cinema owner Todd Tomorrow appears and she begins a torrid affair. Subversive on all fronts, this gross-out romance is dirty in all the right ways. + This screening will be presented as originally intended, in fragrant Odorama.

Female Trouble Sun 28 — Tue 30 Sep

This is the life story of spoiled schoolgirl Dawn Davenport who runs away from home, gets pregnant on a junkyard mattress while hitchhiking, and ends up as a fashion model for a pair of beauticians who force her to mainline eyeliner and photograph women committing crimes. Life of Crime

Fri 5 — Thu 11 Sep

Fri 12 — Thu 25 Sep

USA/2013/112mins/15. Dir: Kelly Reichardt. With: Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning, Peter Sarsgaard.

USA/2014/94mins/ctba. Dir: Daniel Schechter. With: John Hawkes, Mos Def, Tim Robbins, Jennifer Anniston.

Three radical environmentalists from very different backgrounds come together to execute the most intense protest of their lives: the explosion of a hydroelectric dam — the very source and symbol of the energy sucking resource-devouring industrial culture they despise. This is a tense meditation on the consequences of political extremism and how far you will go to change the world.

Adapted from Elmore Leonard’s The Switch, this is a 1970s-set story of petty criminals who kidnap a rich, sleazy businessman’s wife only to find that he doesn’t want to pay her ransom, setting off a sequence of ever more complicated double crosses. A brisk black comedy that interweaves the absurdist plot with sparkling dialogue and great performances.

Hell is a City

UK/1967/101mins/12A. Dir: Joseph Losey. With: Dirk Bogarde, Stanley Baker, Jacqueline Sassard, Michael York.

UK/1960/92mins/PG. Dir: Val Guest. With: Stanley Baker, Donald Pleasence, Billie Whitelaw.

Stephen is a married Oxford professor experiencing the pangs of a mid-life crisis as he starts to bristle at the stifling emotional repression of the society in which he lives. Things begin to change when he meets Anna, a beautiful student who is engaged to another of Stephen’s students. Though he feels alive again in her presence, Stephen’s feelings for Anna can only end in tragedy for them and those around them. With a script by Harold Pinter, this is a subtle, witty study of simmering class conflict and sexual tension.

Inspector Martineau suspects that escaped thief Don Starling is going to return to Manchester to retrieve a cache of jewels he hid away before being convicted. The sudden, brutal murder of a woman tips the Inspector off that his suspicions were right. He starts tracking down the killer and the gang of men he knows must be working with him, as suspense builds at every turn. The gang falls one by one, until only the killer is left.

Electric Shadows: A Century of Chinese Cinema From the glamour and invention of Shanghai’s 1930s golden age, the restrictions of the Cultural Revolution to the renaissance of the independent spirit of the late 20th century leaping into the 21st, this month we have a taste of the rich history of Chinese Cinema.

Song at Midnight

In the Mood for Love

Tue 2 Sep

Tue 16 Sep

China/1937/113mins/subtitles/PG. Dir: Weibang Ma-Xu. With: Menghe Zu, Ping Hu, Shan Jin.

China/2000/92mins/subtitles/PG. Dir: Wong Kar-Wai. With: Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung.

The first full sound version of Phantom of the Opera came not from Hollywood, but China. Dan-Ping, an opera singer, is horribly disfigured by a warlord who suspects him of having ties to his political enemies. He flees to the rafters of the abandoned opera house and longs for his love, the daughter of the war-lord. Weibang sustains an air of gloom through melodramatic cinematography and the lead actor’s histrionics in what is widely considered to be the first Chinese horror film.

A man and a woman move in to neighbouring Hong Kong apartments on the same day and form a bond when they both suspect their respective partners of extramarital activities. They meet in secret, acting out fictitious scenarios in which they confront their unfaithful spouses and have an affair. Widely considered to be a masterpiece of the Hong Kong Second Wave, this is a delicate and visually lush portrait of fatalism, restraint and sensual anticipation.

Spring in a Small Town

The Red Detachment of Women

Tue 9 Sep China/1948/98mins/subtitles/U. Dir: Fei Mu. With: Chaoming Cui, Wei Li, Yu Shi.

Depressed hypochondriac Liyan lives in a house still damaged by Japanese war-time bombing, stagnating in ruins and a stunted marriage. When a charming doctor comes to visit the family his wife Yuwen uncovers long-suppressed feelings for her former sweetheart and becomes torn between yearning and duty. Eliciting a great performance from Wei Wei as Yuwen, whose wistful voiceover offers insights into her conflicted feelings, Fei Mu creates spellbinding chamberwork in a subtle yet potent study of halted passion, half-truths and the ghosts of the past. With thanks to the China Film Archive

Tue 23 Sep China/1961/92mins/subtitles/U. Dir: Xie Jin. With: Qiang Chen, Niu Tie, Xin-Gang Wang.

One of six films made during Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution and a testament to Communist kitsch. Peasant Wu Qinghua escapes her village and the clutches of its terrible warlord and joins a troop of women soldiers known as The Red Detachment of Women, who liberate her village and topple the tyrant. An adaptation of a ballet of the same name and set to the backdrop of the Communist takeover, this is a bold and theatrical swan song of Mao the Red Emperor and an exemplar of blunt propaganda.

USA/2014/113mins/PG. Dir: Todd Douglas Miller. With: Stan Adelstein, Lanice Archer, Robert Bakker.

Gently striking, achingly tense, this subtly explores the shifting relationship between the diminutive Lilith, a blonde, blue-eyed Argentinian girl and Josef Mengele, the Nazi doctor on the run for his crimes at Auschwitz. The tension that comes from knowing Mengele’s past — of which Lilith and her family are unaware — becomes almost unbearable as his relationship with Lilith grows closer. Beautifully shot against the bleak Patagonian mountains, this is a wonderfully atmospheric film.

Leave to Remain Fri 19 — Thu 25 Sep UK/2014/89mins/15. Dir: Bruce Goodison. With: Jake Davies, Toby Jones, Zarrien Masieh.

Afghan teenager Omar is at the precarious juncture of having his refugee status decided when the arrival of a boy from back home threatens to change everything. The outcome may be the difference between life and death and his options are to tell the unbelievable truth or to tell a good story. With powerful performances from the cast, the majority of whom are refugees themselves, this demonstrates what happens when young people arrive alone and scared and find themselves in a hostile country: the UK.

Palaeontologist Peter Larson and his team from the Black Hills Institute made the world’s greatest dinosaur discovery in 1990; the largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus rex ever found. But during a ten-year battle with the U.S. government, powerful museums, Native American tribes and competing scientists, they found themselves not only fighting to keep their dinosaur but fighting for their freedom as well.

Pride Wed 10 Sep + Fri 26 Sep — Thu 9 Oct UK/2014/120mins/15. Dir: Matthew Warchus. With: Imelda Staunton, Lisa Palfrey, Jessica Gunning, Bill Nighy, Dominic West, Paddy Considine, George MacKay.

Summer 1984, Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers is on strike. In London lesbian and gay activists decide to raise money to support the families of the miners, but they encounter a problem when the NUM seem embarrassed to receive their support. Undeterred, they decide to go directly to the miners, identifying a mining village in the Dulais Valley. This is an impassioned and extraordinary true story of two seemingly alien communities who form a surprising and ultimately triumphant partnership. + Join us on Wed 10 Sep for a special preview BAFTA Cymru screening with members of the cast and crew, tickets are limited so please book in advance.

BAFTA Cymru presents: The British Academy Cymru Awards are almost here and we are giving you a chance to see the three nominated films before the winner is announced at the award ceremony on Sunday 26 October (please see www.bafta.org/cymru for more info). Please check our website www.chapter.org for details after 12 September.

Stephen Phillips Temporary Cinema Programme Officer As the evenings start to get a tiny bit darker, I’ll be found in the cinema for the majority of the month as two excellent seasons get into gear; a heartfelt tribute to trash king John Waters and the beginning of our epic sci-fi season kicks off with ‘Phase IV’. Alongside that, the live satellite screening of Nick Cave docu-drama ’20,000 Days on Earth’ is set to be a stunner, accompanied by a live performance at the Barbican. I’ll also be taking part in our community garden Open for Charity Day in anticipation of next spring’s seed sewing.

Of Horses and Men

Fri 26 Sep — Tue 7 Oct

Mon 29 Sep — Thu 2 Oct

Norway/2014/116mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Hans Petter Moland. With: Stellan Skarsgård, Kristofer Hivju, Bruno Ganz.

Iceland/2013/81mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Benedikt Erlingsso. With: Ingvar E. Sigurðsson, Charlotte Bøving.

In this thriller as blackly comic as the snow is white, we meet Citizen of the Year, Nils, who snow ploughs the wild mountains of Norway. The celebrations are cut short when his son is murdered. Seeking revenge and justice, his actions ignite a war between the vegan gangster The Count and the Serbian mafia boss Papa. Winning a blood feud isn’t easy, but Nils has something going for him: Heavy machinery and beginners luck.

Told in a series of vignettes, this is a story of the people in rugged, rural Iceland and the symbiosis and separation between human and equine lives. Beautifully shot scenes paying attention not only to the grace and beauty of the beasts, but to their personalities and individual mannerisms. Love and death are interlaced with immense consequences and the fortunes of the people are seen through the horse’s perception with deadpan humour.

Directed and Choreographed by Sean Tuan John. Wales/2014/30mins/15.

This provocative dance film centres around 24 hours inside a fictional governmental department where the guests are offered therapy and deprogramming sessions to be rehabilitated and re-entered back into a chaotic society beyond the institution’s walls. The film mixes dark humour, idiosyncratic dance with a highly charged emotional physicality as the camera floats, flies and moves gracefully and voyeuristically through the rooms and corridors witnessing the strange attempts of the workers to force the inhabitants to dance away their fears with both comic, tragic and horrific results. + Join us for a Q+A with director and uhhuh dance company following the film.
