Welcome

After a break for the summer, our theatre is abuzz once again, with a selection of drama, comedy and gigs to usher in the new season (p1015). Motherlode are back after a successful American tour, to present The Good Earth a timely drama about the residents of one small village who fight against corporate development, to protect their way of life (p10-11). The big day has finally arrived — on Tuesday 13 September we’ll be celebrating the centenary of Roald Dahl’s birth with a fabulous selection of films, including a fancy dress screening of The Witches and Scratch ‘n’ Sniff Matilda (p18-21). Join us to celebrate one of Wales’ most beloved storytellers! This month we’ll be catching the last of summer and heading outdoors... You may already know about Canton Community Gardens’ award-winning plots around our building, but if not, there’s an open day on Saturday 3 September (p17). A fantastic opportunity to explore the garden, and to learn more about it and its prolific beehive. Here gardener Roger Phillips gives us a little insight as to what we can expect.

We were delighted when Canton Community Gardens were awarded the Green Flag Award by Keep Wales Tidy earlier this year. The award recognises quality parks and green spaces. Our volunteers have enjoyed another year of growing in our predominantly edible garden. We have had a lot of competition from snails this year so lettuces are in short supply, but the nettles are growing well to attract beneficial insects and they make a good soup. Local schools continue to visit and enjoy tasting everything without

hesitation — the wild garlic is always a particular favourite. We welcome all volunteers on Monday nights from 6.30pm and Thursday mornings from 9.30am. Our next event is the NGS Gardens Open for Charity Day on Saturday 3 September 11.30am — 2.30pm when we will be selling honey from the Chapter bees, and there will be a chance to buy plants and talk to the volunteers. The £3 entry fee goes toward the National Gardens Scheme charity and includes tea and cakes and tasting the produce.

Find out more about the NGS Gardens Open for Charity Day on page 17.

Sticky Intimacy: Katie Cuddon, Emma Hart & Nicholas Pope Until Sun 18 Sep ‘Sticky Intimacy’ brings together artists of different generations who each explore an inquisitive relationship to materials and making. The show is a conversation around shared formal and thematic approaches and, while the work is diverse, each artist makes sculpture that is resolutely un-monumental. In using materials such as glass, wood and clay — Cuddon, Hart & Pope translate their own circumstances and lived experiences into exuberant and highly emotive works. Whether it is through a process of sculpting with clay, drawing or glass blowing, the body and its myriad of imperfections are mirrored in the wonky, the awkward and the asymmetrical, and all are tied to the intimacy of the handmade.

Katie Cuddon explores the materiality of clay and the physical engagement of the sculptural object. Her sculptures are known for their clotted, restless surfaces created from thin skins of clay that swathe and wrap themselves into voluminous forms. These figures are often awkward and bodily and their exteriors, largely painted, draw attention to the restless and slippery surfaces that mask a hollow interior. Slipperiness is also embedded within the ambiguity of the forms, which refuse to sit within a singular, fixed definition. The formalised interaction between objects, and between object and viewer, prompts us to contemplate the subjects they touch upon: issues of gender and sexuality, failure and shame, while the personal narrative through which the viewer interprets the work becomes highly significant.

Art

Emma Hart’s works are marked by a chaotic aesthetic that disrupts the viewing process, and captures the nagging anxieties of daily life. She uses materials to reference awkward experiences and by doing so creates visual spillages that teeter between control and disarray. Ceramic outlines of wine glasses tip ceramic drinks against the gallery wall. These pools are simultaneously speech bubbles and sick that erupt from the mouth shapes that Hart has bitten in to the clay. The works are raw — ceramic arms throw punches, curl around the body and mop up tears; legs that sweat, malleable and marked, are captured in prints that are inserted into glazed clay. Sculptures of hair nod to tensions between looseness, control and stasis. The long hair here is held by oversized scrunchies that make an unconvincing attempt at taming already static fired clay. Hart deftly shifts the space that is occupied by the viewer using narratives that are at once public and also deeply private. Like that of many of his peers who emerged in the 1970s, who were preoccupied with finding a new and distinctive sculptural language, Nicholas Pope’s work marked a disassociation from an earlier generation and he began to be known for using mainly natural materials, which he carved, or more simply, stacked and assembled. Following his 1980 exhibition representing Britain at the Venice Biennale, Pope visited Zimbabwe and Tanzania: an experience that affected the rest of his life and twisted his artistic practice completely. In a move towards softer, more malleable materials such as glass, porcelain, textiles, moulded aluminium and ceramics, Pope began to make abstract works that reference complicated themes of spirituality, suicide and society. In this exhibition, Pope has worked with master glassmaker James Maskrey from the National Glass Centre, Sunderland, to create a new series of fourteen chalices inspired by the Seven Virtues and Seven Deadly Sins. Working from the artist’s original drawings, the chalices translate mark making into glass blowing, manifesting a complex relationship between artist and maker. With the drawings displayed alongside the chalices, audiences are offered a unique opportunity to see this translation in proximity.

Sticky Intimacy Symposium Sat 17 Sep 10am–4.30pm To accompany our current exhibition Sticky Intimacy, we are pleased to collaborate with curator George Vasey for a day long symposium where artists are invited to talk about one work of significance from their own practice for 30 minutes. Through this close reading of their own research, contributors can reflect on a broad range of influences and reference points. How do we articulate “one work”? Is it within the art work or exhibition? Network or object? Intention or reception? The event follows on from the NGCA event in June 2016 which featured talks by Johann Arens, Emily Hesse, Fay Nicolson, Lorna Macintyre, William Cobbing and Luke McCreadie. The event is free and open to all. Spaces are limited, so please book a place by contacting our Box Office on 029 2030 4400 or on our website www.chapter.org. This event is organised by NGCA in collaboration with Chapter.

ART IN THE BAR

Lorna Macintyre Until Sun 25 Sep To accompany the forthcoming gallery exhibition Sticky Intimacy: Katie Cuddon, Emma Hart & Nicholas Pope, Scottish artist Lorna Macintyre has taken a series of photographs of Nicholas Pope’s house and studio in Herefordshire. The silver gelatin prints offer an oblique documentation of his work, and present a portrait of an artist through an idiosyncratic landscape of objects, as much as through the work. The lyrical photographs gesture towards his influence, forming a type of formal and conceptual reverberation across generations.

Well Thumbed Wed 28 Sep 7.30pm Conceived and performed by Terry Victor There is a generation that still remembers the erotic education and salacious thrills to be had in the well-thumbed pages of respectable libraries; the promise and temptations of dirty words and suggestive passages that then-young readers found irresistible. And, now, there’s a new generation that needs to be pointed in the right direction… Well Thumbed & well out of copyright is one man’s gentle yet irredeemably prurient thumbing through those well-used pages of literature. A classic line up of absolute filth that includes words from Jane Austen, Thomas Otway, William Shakespeare and James Joyce, to name just a few. £10/£8 Age 16+ (adult content)

Tim Bromage Shift Sat 1 Oct 8pm “The vehicle sat on the red bock driveway, squat and sullen. The ritual should have been simple... but there was so much he did not know, he had not observed it for so long, and now fear, coupled with a sense of obligation had led to an unexpected cry for help. After all you heard horror stories, heard of those moments when a vehicle died with no warning, at eighty mile an hour… out on the great tarmac. One moment hurtling forward, and then... nothing. Not a whisper, nor cough. Coasting mockingly to a halt, never to move again” From ‘The Driver’ by Gordon Lang 1945 Tim Bromage presents shift a new performance that draws upon Greek mythology, in particular the practice of the Delphic Oracle. Combining a wide variety of disciplines, including music, prose and other activities, the work explores truth, fiction, and FATE. It’s not all doom and gloom though, There’s alternate realities, mind reading, and possibly even an appearance by Bobby Darin. £10/£8

ROALD DAHL ON FILM

The Witches

Gremlins

Thu 1 — Sun 4 + Tue 13 Sep

Sat 10 + Sun 11 Sep

UK/1990/91mins/PG. Dir: Nicolas Roeg. With: Anjelica Huston, Mai Zettering, Jason Fisher.

USA/1984/106mins/12A. Dir: Joe Dante. With: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton.

After his parents die in a car crash, Luke travels with his eccentric grandmother to a stark Cornish hotel. Also checking in is the annual ladies meeting of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Luke overhears a meeting only to discover they are actually a convocation of ghastly witches hell bent on turning every child in Britain into a mouse. With a deliciously wicked performance from Anjelica Huston and imaginative puppetry by Jim Henson’s creature shop, Roeg’s dark and witty retelling puts disturbing flesh on Dahl’s fancies like few other adaptations.

Seeking a unique gift for his son, an erstwhile inventor purchases a cute, fuzzy little Mogwai from a Chinatown shopkeeper’s grandson, warning him to never let it get wet, exposed to sunlight or feed it after midnight. Naturally, things don’t go to plan and the loveable critter mutates, unleashing an army of devilish monsters and panic in the streets. Loosely inspired by the creatures from Dahl’s character “Gremlin Gus”, this is an homage to B-movie monsters and both a Christmas and all year round classic.

Tales of the Unexpected

Sun 11 + Tue 13 Sep

Tue 6 + Tue 20 Sep UK/1979-1988/25mins/12A.

A selection of episodes from the classic macabre British television series, often told with sinister and wryly comedic undertones based on the short stories by Roald Dahl. Starring some of the greatest acting talent of the time, including Joseph Cotton, Ron Moody, Joan Collins, Brian Blessed, Julie Harris, Sir John Gielgud, Susan George and Michael Gambon. The audience will vote for the episodes they want screened — please see our website for full list of episodes.

UK/1971/110mins/adv18. Dir: Alastair Reid. With: Patricia Neal, Pamela Brown, Nicholas Clay.

The dreary existence of middle-aged spinster Maura takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of young handyman Billy Jarvis, but there is more to Billy than meets the eye. Finding herself fascinated by his nocturnal forays, she learns to her horror why he spends so much time outdoors at night. An eerie Bernard Herrmann score ups the tension as Patricia Neal, then Dahl’s wife, provides sexual tension and a certain Gothic flavour.

Fri 2 — Wed 7 Sep

Fri 2 — Thu 15 Sep

UK/2016/88mins/15. Dir: János Edelényi. With: Brian Cox, Coco König, Emilia Fox, Karl Johnson, Anna Chancellor.

USA/2016/90mins/15. Dir: Todd Solondz. With: Greta Gerwig, Ellen Burnstyn, Kieran Culkin, Julie Delphy, Danny DeVito.

Sir Michael Gifford is a retired Shakespearean actor suffering from Parkinson’s, confined and cantankerous at his country estate. He has alienated a host of caregivers, but his daughter forces a new companion on him, a young Hungarian woman with creative aspirations of her own. A warm, witty film with charming performances, including a late career best from Brian Cox.

A spiritual sequel to the unforgettable ‘Welcome To the Dollhouse’, this is the story of a dachshund (wiener dog in American slang) as he travels around the country between various owners, all with their own problems (including Dollhouse’s Dawn Weiner). The sweetness of the premise is undercut by the caustic, and at times disturbing, profoundly perceptive observation eye of Solondz.

In the 1950s, Chet Baker was one of the most famous trumpeters in the world, renowned as both a pioneer of the West Coast jazz scene and an icon of melancholic cool. But by the 1960s, his career and personal life were in shambles following years of profound heroin addiction. Reimagining a key moment in Baker’s life as he attempts to stage a comeback spurred by a new romance, this is a film concerned with the artistry and improvisatory genius of jazz, showcasing an extraordinary central performance by Ethan Hawke.

The Clan

Author: The JT LeRoy Story

At the head of the Puccio family is charismatic, benign patriarch Arquímedes. Unemployed after the Falklands War, Arquímedes starts kidnapping members of wealthy families and demanding ransoms, while holding them under his family’s nose. Based on the astonishing true story of a seemingly normal family who turn to crime at a time when the military dictatorship specialised in ‘disappearing’ its suspected political opponents. This is a witty, disturbing and beautifully controlled drama exploring the nature of authoritarianism and the banality of evil.

Finding Dory

Fri 26 Aug — Sun 11 Sep USA/2016/103mins/U. Dir: Andrew Stanton, Angus MacLane. With: Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks.

The friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish Dory tries to relocate her parents. Trouble is, the fact that she had parents is one of the only things Dory can remember, and it’s learning anything about them that proves difficult. Swept out to sea by an ocean current, she floats on to learn more about herself and family.
