NEW FOREST ROTARY CLUB HORSE, CYCLE OR WALK 2015
16th May
New Forest Rotary Club is once again organising this really enjoyable sponsored fundraising event and the SFHT will be taking part. The event takes place on Saturday 16th May at Burley Park, adjacent to the Queens Head pub in the New Forest. The main start is at 10am when the horses set off followed by walkers and cyclists at staggered times. However, it is also possible for walkers and cyclists to start slightly later during the morning. The routes are mainly off-road through open forest; horses and walkers about 6 miles, cyclists a choice of about 6 or 16 miles. Start and Finish at Burley Park. We had a wonderful day last year and raised just over £1,000 and this year we want to do much better and get more people involved. It really is a great day out, with food available on site and the Queens Head pub adjacent to Burley Park so no need to feel hungry! Please do try to join us for this fun day. Volunteering at SFHT As an organisation we are extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated and enthusiastic Volunteer team. During 2014 the total number of hours that Volunteers contributed amounted to an outstanding sum of 6,158. Members continue their amazing support and regularly attend to support our Stables Day service and special events – including Horse of the Year Show at Olympia, Wizard of Oz performance at the BIC, German Market in Bournemouth Town Centre, Submarine Museum in Gosport, together with our Christmas Celebration Event and Christmas Carol Service. Since January we have received numerous enquiries for volunteering with us. At the beginning of each year it seems that people wish to fulfil their New Year Resolutions as many potential members come along saying that they want to give something back to society. We always welcome new Volunteers on board as there are extensive prospects to offer within the Trust – especially with our additional Day Opportunities of Cornerways and Gifted - we are always extremely grateful for extra support which enables us to provide the excellent range of activities that we do. Volunteers certainly feel rewarded from their
voluntary roles with us – they often say that they “go away with a smile on their face” and say to themselves “today was a good day” after their experiences with us. News from the Stables Flat With the spring rapidly approaching we are pleased to see the back of winter. All in the Flat had great Christmases with their families and friends. The staff put on an early Christmas lunch for all in the Flat to celebrate together before people went off on their visits. We have been supporting individuals to stay in contact with family members via the use of Skype and email which has been a great way of people staying in touch. We are also in the process of upgrading the service user computer to enable them to research points of interest and hopefully plan days out with their inspired ideas. The service users continue to make the most of the alternative day provisions based from the Stables Flat. Simon has been spending time at the library and visiting local historical sites. Stephen has been accessing the local community and Nick, Andrew and Paul have been making the most of having some quiet time during the day as and when they wish.

On a very cold and windy December afternoon service users, staff, volunteers, Trustees and the Mayor of Ringwood gathered in Bisterne Church for our Carol Service. The church was almost full and looked beautiful with a wonderful Christmas tree and floral displays all ready for the Christmas services.

Revd. Henriet Miell, from Ringwood Parish Church, arranged the service and a number of service users, staff and volunteers took part: Nathan James (service user) & Lynda Gillies (volunteer) lit the Christ Candle. David Mowinski read the lesson, Val Smith (staff), Liz Holmes (volunteer) & Libby Bellhouse (volunteer) said the prayers. A number of service users made the crib, all went well with this, at first, Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, Shepherds, all safely placed in the crib together with various animals including one lamb. “Who has the other lamb?” asked Henriet Miell... silence... “Where is the other lamb?”... silence. We proceeded without the other lamb but all was well. We finished with a rousing “Oh, Come all ye Faithful” led by Stephen Freemantle from the front of the church. A wonderful Carol Service and many people said how much they enjoyed it and hoped it would be a fixture in the SFHT calendar. Many thanks to Revd. Henriet Miell, the service users, staff and volunteers, the Organist and to Norman & Betty Light from Bisterne Church who ensured that the church was warm and the lights were on when we arrived.

News from Harleith & Abbotsford Mark Wells says “Everyone had a great Christmas either spending time with parents, in a hotel or at Abbotsford/Harleith with plenty of food and parties going on.” Now that Spring is not far away Service Users are looking into holiday choices for the coming Summer. As usual Butlins is still a favourite, also Blackpool has been mentioned, along with canal holidays, Isle of Wight, Theatre trips and Thorpe Park. Staff are also looking at the possibility of renting a beach hut for summer week-ends.
Harleith has now got a new dining table and chairs and this has encouraged Service Users to sit and eat together. Julian is about to have his room completely redecorated and Service Users hope to have some new garden furniture in time for, hopefully, those hot summer days.
Abbotsford is looking forward to having a bigger lounge with the construction of a new conservatory where everyone can sit together and funding is being sought so that this work can begin as soon as possible. Some of the rooms are being redecorated and new carpets fitted. Finally, new fencing will be installed in the garden to provide greater privacy.

Service Users have a Wonderful Christmas Party! This year’s Christmas Party for the Service Users was again a huge success, attended by over 100 people!! The party was held at the same venue as last year, Hurn Bridge Sports Club, as this was such a popular choice from many of the Service Users due to last year’s brilliant party there. Leading up to the Party everyone was very excited discussing what they would be wearing as this year’s theme was ‘SPARKLE’. Themed events are always very popular with everyone and lots of fun!!! We had a disco playing many favourite songs and taking lots of personal requests throughout the evening and also a raffle providing many lovely prizes. This year’s food was a choice of several different basket meals, this being a popular change to the normal buffet style refreshments. All this was made possible by donation from Fundraising of £686 together with a further donation of £200 from Donaldson Ross & Co. towards the event, which was very much appreciated and enabled all Service Users to have a very special party together.

Christmas Celebration Event Our Events Committee decided that we would celebrate our Christmas in 2014 early in the hope of
promoting the festive spirit. Our goal was to offer our visitors entertainment and refreshments. We were extremely honoured that the Mayor of Ringwood, Barbara Woodifield, joined us to officially open the event on the last Friday in November. Father Christmas also thrilled us by attending and had a very cosy and exquisite “Grotto” in the Dance & Drama Studio. Several children visited Father Christmas during the afternoon and advised him that they were very eager to receive the presents that they had wished for. The atmosphere was cheerful and vibrant. In the Courtyard the Beer Tent was elaborately decorated. Our Service Managers Jo Gibbs, Kevin Forward & Mark Wells served mulled wine and hot cider, together with beer from the local Ringwood Brewery - all very welcoming! Our Dance & Drama group made us feel very proud when they performed and sang Xmas songs, together with some from the “Sister Act” medley. Volunteers Micky Chilman & Pete Thompson were selling Hot Dogs, and what a great team these two make. Colin Parish (Supported Living Worker) was close by with his outstanding stall selling stained glass items. Our Dance & Drama Studio accommodated our Craft, Pottery & Woodwork stalls. Volunteers Rob Taylor and Marina Caines ran a Games Stall creating a bit of fun and Marisia Zdrochecki (Domiciliary Care Team Leader) and sister Alina were selling some amazing jewellery. In the Stables dining-room, we offered refreshments and tasty stollen and mince pies. A small group of service users from Cornerways very kindly came to help serve our visitors. This was to promote their catering skills and they all did a fantastic job! In the Tea Bar Marion Davies & Val Smith sold some beautifully decorated cakes. Our Stables Flat Team Leader Diana Shearer organised and ran the Tombola Stall selling items that had mainly been donated to the Trust. We were delighted that our former driver Sheila Orr came and manned the “Glow In the Dark” stall. Sheila had made some fantastic Christmas decorations which all sold and helped to raise funds. Our volunteer Lynda Gillies efficiently took great charge of the Raffle Stall and was assisted by volunteer Liz Holmes. We were very grateful to RMDS (Ringwood Music & Dramatic Society) who came along and sang some festive carols and to the Men’s Group of Ringwood Parish Church who manned the car park for us.

Her Royal Highness was given a very warm welcome by service users, staff, trustees and volunteers as she arrived in the Courtyard at The Stables. The Chairman of Hampshire County Council and New Forest District Council and the Mayor of Ringwood were waiting to be presented to her along with Cllr. Steve Rippon-Swaine a Hampshire County Councillor, New Forest District Councillor and Ringwood Town Councillor. Jan Mills invited Her Royal Highness to tour the garden and meet a number of staff, service users and volunteers who work there. Although it was raining HRH was so interested in all that she saw and took her time and spoke to everyone. The Royal Party then moved into the Dance & Drama Studio and HRH enjoyed a short performance by service users of their “Love in the War” production. She spent time talking to service users, staff and volunteers before heading for the Dining Room to see more of our work.

The three Home Service Managers were waiting to greet her along with Mandy Harris, Service Manager: Domiciliary Care and two service users, Andrew Buckingham and Stephen Freemantle. Her Royal Highness spent a relaxed time speaking to everyone and having her photograph taken before signing our Visitor Book and making her way back to the Dance and Drama Studio. Several groups were waiting to meeting her including service users, volunteers, staff and trustees and HRH took time to speak to everyone and was so interested in what people had to say. Hallam Mills then invited her to unveil a plaque commemorating her visit and three Countess of Wessex roses will be planted in our garden.

NEWS from FUNDRAISING The last few months have been extremely busy for Fundraising with a Friends Event taking place at Bisterne Manor just before Christmas, a Carol Service at Bisterne Church and immediately after Christmas we were preparing for our Royal Visit by HRH The Countess of Wessex on 28th January 2015. Grants & Donations We have received a number of grants and donations over the last few months including a very generous grant of £5,000 from Santander to help us establish a small Sensory Garden behind the Quiet Room at The Stables. We hope to have plans drawn up for this garden in the near future so that service users can enjoy the tranquillity of this space and learn how to tend the garden for themselves.

We have had a number of generous donations from Family Members and Friends, Masonic Lodges, Church/Community Groups and local business. Some of these donations are specifically for the refurbishment of two of our homes, Abbotsford and Pinehaven. We have a significant amount of fundraising ahead of us this year in order to do this work £160,000 plus VAT. We also want to provide our service users with a new Art Suite, on site at The Stables. This will be one large space with interconnecting doors so that smaller spaces can be created for group activities. We are waiting for the cost of this project at the moment and I hope to have more news in the near future.

Thirty-two people supported the event and enjoyed a delicious buffet with wine and a guided tour of the beautiful Manor House.
