21st Anniversary
A HUGE WELCOME to the 21st
Picture the scene 21 years ago, a handful of people and one dog, listening to one band performing on the bandstand. I’m not sure about the dog, but the people enjoyed the concert, and the following year invited their friends. And the following year they invited their friends, and 21 years on Christchurch can be very proud of hosting what is now probably the largest event of its kind in the country. Every year we try a few new things. Stompin’ ‘regulars’ will have spotted that the main bands this year are performing on a new, dedicated stage, hopefully providing a much better experience for a larger proportion of the audience. Interim community acts will be performing on the bandstand, an altogether much better place for them to perform. Following the success of last year, the Absolute Music marquee have some of the most talented and enthusiastic young musicians in the county performing, and I am sure they would welcome your support. Stompin’ on the Quomps is almost entirely funded by your donations, and last year Christchurch Round Table helped us with the collection. Blessed by the weather-gods the event made a small profit, and we were able to donate just over £1,000 to Christchurch Round Table. Later in 2014 the Christchurch Christmas Festival, which for the first time was being run independently from the Council, needed an early financial commitment in order to go ahead, and Christchurch Round Table stepped up to the mark and donated £1,000. So donations from the community at Stompin’ on the Quomps, via Christchurch Round Table, allowed the popular Christmas event to go ahead. Those of you who witnessed the smiles on the faces of the children as Father Christmas visited the town, will know the Christmas festival was a great event, and one the community can be very proud of.
Stompin’ on the Quomps is a not-for-profit organisation, the organisers giving up their time freely. Each year our costs continue to rise, so please, please dig deep - it is your donation that keeps the event going. Adrian Dwyer Chairman, ‘Stompin’ on the Quomps Community Interest Company

Taverners Big Band At the first Stompin’ on the Quomps in 1994 The Taverners Big Band played to a handful of people... and a dog. In recent years dogs haven’t been allowed, but only because of the huge crowds that come to listen and dance. Playing their unique blend of standard and contemporary big band jazz, The Taverners are the only band to have played in every one of the last 20 years’ events, and it is a pleasure band members relish. The band came about after a handful of musicians raised money by playing Christmas carols for what became the ‘new’ Mudeford lifeboat. As is inevitable for musicians they ended up in a pub, which was previously the Castle Tavern, and as the embouchures were lubricated with ale, so the carols took on a curiously ‘swing’ feel. It led to the suggestion that a band was formed, one that took its name from the pub. Watching from the audience at some of those early concerts at the Regent Centre was a young lad who had just started to learn the clarinet. Inspired by the sound of the big band he took up the saxophone, went on to study music at Goldsmiths College London, and then had a hugely successful career playing, and then directing, bands on liners such as the QE2 and Oriana. Leading the Taverners Big Band today is one of the finest alto sax players in the country, the now not-so-young lad that the band inspired years before – Tim Fulker.

The Lemongrove The group was founded in 1993 as a jazz trio with the sole intention of playing good music well. Originally it was only intended to be a `hobby` band as a playing alternative to Andy & Jim`s other band, the very successful `Street Level`. The Lemongrove (or as it was then`The Lemongrove Plating Co`, taken from an advert seen on the side of a 1930s racing car) continued to grow in popularity and success supporting some popular names on the jazz festival circuit such as George Melly, Courtney Pine, Barbara Dennerlein to mention a few. With the band`s growing audiences and successes it was decided to wind down Street Level (after nearly fifteen years!) and to put all the effort into The Lemongrove project. Piano was added in 1995 and the band has been working regularly ever since, playing to a variety of audiences at public and private events of all sizes and occasions and sometimes in the most bizarre locations.

Blue Commotion ZOË SCHWARZ BLUE COMMOTION 2014 British Blues Awards Nominee Zoë Schwarz brings her very popular band BLUE COMMOTION back to Stompin by popular demand. 2013 was a big year for Zoë and the band with the release of their breakthrough album ‘The Blues Don’t Scare Me’, which lead to a series of awards, nominations and festival appearances. Their exciting live set is based around the band’s blues based, rootsy originals; featuring strong catchy riffs, interesting arrangements and exciting grooves, providing the perfect vehicle for Zoë’s incomparable heart wrenching vocals. The distinct and beautiful touch of left handed guitarist Rob Koral adds another unique voice into the mix, as does the brilliant harmonica of the charismatic and zany Si Genaro. The highly accomplished rhythm section of Pete Whittaker-Hammond organ (Nigel Price, Theo Travis, Jim Mullen) and Paul Robinson-drums (Nina Simone, Van Morrison, Paul McCartney) bring massive authority with the ability to push the music in unpredictable and exciting directions.
What they say about Blue Commotion... “Zoë and her band have reached the point where they cannot be ignored and are poised to make the international breakthrough they deserve.” The Bishop, Blues Matters, December 2013
“Schwarz takes all that is good from Janis Joplin and Billie Holiday and makes it uniquely her own” C. Michael Bailey, All About Jazz, Apr 2012 Zoë has made a considerable impact in a very short space of time and is another one of those new artists that have added a fresh approach and vibrancy to the thriving UK blues scene.

Taxi - This year we will have a taxi rank on site serviced by Christchurch Radio Cabs 01202 484848, who are Stompin’ supporters.
Christchurch Round Table are doing an astounding job helping us to raise the funding required to host the event, and in particular I’d like to thank James Taylor of Taylor Made Designs. Absolute Music have provided an opportunity for young people to perform at Stompin’, and I would like to thank Alan Barclay for his enthusiastic support. We are grateful to Lighthouse Youth Centre for the loan of the marquee and to Russ Gandicott for his sage advice. Highcliffe Charity Players always put on a great performance, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank George for her support.
How about going by Ferry? Park near Tuckton Tea Gardens and take a leisurely cruise to Christchurch Quay. Do check the time of the last ferry with the operator.
We are hugely grateful to 1st Christchurch (Town) Scouts for helping with the clean-up, and to Jerry Whitton and the Jerry Whitton’s Christchurch Youth U15 Football Team for helping us meet the licensing requirements.

We are grateful to Graham Latham for overseeing the financial accounts. Our aim is a simple one, to put a smile on faces on many people, irrespective of age, ability or wealth, and to do so with a quality of music, broadly in the jazz genre.
