Dr Schleifer receives FEMS-Lwoff award For his outstanding service to microbiology in Europe, Dr Karl-Heinz Schleifer will receive the FEMS-Lwoff award during the 3rd FEMS Congress in Gothenburg, Sweden. Dr Schleifer was chosen for the Lwoff Medal because of his distinguished work on the molecular identification of bacteria.

EAM to be launched at the 3rd FEMS Congress The European Academy of Microbiology (EAM) will be inaugurated during the FEMS Congress in Gothenburg, Sweden. The EAM is a new initiative of FEMS aimed at amplifying the impact of microbiology and microbiologists in Europe. It will consist of microbiologists leading in their fields and will promote excellence in microbiology through targeted programs and activities. The activities of the EAM include: • Organization of high standard meetings on "cutting edge" subjects • Organization of colloquia to discuss critical issues in microbiology • Publishing of recommendations on critical issues in microbiology • Promoting microbiology education • Providing expert advice to European and local authorities • Initiating special awards for microbiological achievements • Initiating joined activities with other institutions (e.g. AAM, EMBO) Click HERE for more EAM details.

Microbes and men meet at the 3rd FEMS Congress
FEMS-sponsored meetings, 2009:
Almost 1800 microbiologists the world over attended the 3rd FEMS Congress in Gothenburg, Sweden from June 28—July 2.
The European Academy of Microbiology was also launched. The EAM is an initiative of Former FEMS President Dr Eliora Ron.
Of the 73 countries represented, the largest number of participants came from Sweden, Spain and Germany.
It aims to amplify the impact of microbiology and microbiologists in Europe and to promote excellence in microbiology through targeted programs and activities.
More than 500 posters were presented, around 65 exhibitors showed their products and about 25 symposia were attended by the congress participants.
The next FEMS Congress will be held on June 25-30, 2011 in Geneva, Switzerland. Hope to see you there!

The deadline for the Meeting Attendance Grants is on September 1, 2009. Young scientists who are members of FEMS societies and not more than 36 years of age are encouraged to apply. This grant allows you to attend/visit microbiology-related meetings opening between Oct. 1, 2009—April 30, 2010.

Each year the FEMS journals get new cover images. The images accompanied by the legend are used for all issues of the FEMS journals for the whole calendar year. They also appear in miniatures on the FEMS website and the publisher’s website. In addition, the covers are used for promotional purposes.

36th Council Meeting held in Barcelona Spain was this year’s venue for the 36th FEMS Council Meeting. Almost 40 FEMS member societies were represented at the meeting which was held at the Institut d’ Estudis Catalans in Barcelona.

During the meeting, seven provisional members of FEMS member societies were chosen to become full members, these are: • Armenian Microbiological Society Society for Anaerobic Microbiology British Phycological Society Interregional Russian Microbiological Society Society of Microbiologists of Ukraine Society for Virology
• Interregional Association for Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobial Chemotherapy Moreover, the next FEMS President was confirmed and the next Vice-President elected. The Council also elected/reelected new delegate representatives for the Management Boards. The FEMS Council meeting is the annual meeting of the FEMS Executive Board and Delegates. The 36th Council Meeting was hosted by the Spanish Society for Microbiology. The next Council Meeting will be held on September 24 and 25, 2010 in Prague, Czech Republic. It will be hosted by the Czechoslovak Society for Microbiology.
Drs Schink and Piffaretti to lead FEMS from September 2010 One of the highlights of the 36th FEMS Council meeting was the confirmation of the next President and the election of the next Vice-President. Current FEMS Vice-President Dr Bernhard Schink was confirmed as the next FEMS President, while Dr Jean-Claude Piffaretti of the Swiss Society for Microbiology (SSM) was elected as the coming FEMS Vice-President. The following delegates were also elected/re-elected as representatives for the Management Boards: •Dr Jozef Anné (Belgian Society for Microbiology) and Dr Alexander Rapoport (Latvian Society for Microbiology) for the Awards Board

FEMS-Jensen Award open ‘til 30 Nov. 2009 An award for young microbiologists, the FEMS-Jensen award is named after the Danish soil microbiologist Dr Hans Laurits Jensen (1898-1977).

The award was initiated through a donation by the UK-microbiologist Dr John R. Norris CBE, to many of us known as an Editor of Methods in Microbiology and as former FEMS Treasurer.
Dr Jensen was the tutor of Dr Norris and many other soil microbiologists. He was one of the 20th century foremost scientists and teachers in the field of symbiotic and non-symbiotic nitrogen fixation, soil microbial activity, and the taxonomy of Actinomycetes, Azotobacter, mycobacteria and coryneform bacteria, as well as a pioneer in microbial degradation of pesticides. Dr Jensen was active in England and Australia, as well as in his home country Denmark. Objective The FEMS-Jensen award recognises academic achievement and superior research accomplishments showing significant potential to develop a distinguished research career. It honours Dr Hans Laurits Jensen for helping young scientists in establishing their scientific career.

Award The award comprises a fellowship for spending at least half a year in an eminent research laboratory chosen by the student. The maximum award amounts to EUR 10 000. An illuminated address, signed by the FEMS President, will be handed to the awardee. Eligibility Outstanding European students of mi-
crobiology at the final stages of their PhD studies, or those who received their PhD-degree less than two years from the application deadline are eligible for this Dr Jensen award. Moreover, applicants should be less than 36 years old at the time of the application deadline. Frequency The award will be given once every two years. Application Interested candidates are asked to submit their application to the convenor of the Awards Board (FEMS President) via the FEMS Central Office (fems@fems-microbiology.org). The application letter should be accompanied by: a. a curriculum vitae. b. two reference letters from wellknown European microbiologists. c. an invitation letter from the director of the host laboratory. d. an outline of the research proposal. Dear Colleague, This issue of the Affiliates Letter focuses on the FEMS Research Fellowships which has a deadline on December 1, 2009 and the plans of FEMS for its grants and fellowships.

It calls on working microbiologists who are less than 36 years old. These fellowships are meant to assist young scientists in pursuing their research up to three months in a European country which is different from where he/she lives in. 2009, a good year for FEMS The year 2009 is a fruitful year for FEMS. Two of the biggest events of the year are the 3rd Congress of Microbiologists held in Gothenburg, Sweden and the 36th Council Meeting in Barcelona, Spain. Both are successful events with long-term impacts on FEMS as the voice of microbiology in Europe and microbiology itself.
If 2009 is a good and fruitful year, FEMS looks forward to more challenges in 2010. Preparations for the next FEMS Congress in Geneva, Switzerland are already in motion. The next FEMS Council meeting which will be held in Prague, Czech Republic will expectedly be another big event. Finally, FEMS will allot 10% of its budget on Research Fellowships to Young Scientist research outside Europe.
