7th FEMS-ESCMID conference to focus on Helicobacter pylori The 7th FEMS-ESCMID Conference on New Frontiers in Microbiology and Infection will be held on October 2-6, 2011 in Switzerland.
IN THIS ISSUE 7th FEMS-ESCMID Conference in Switzerland to focus on Helicobacter Pylori FEMS Microbiology Reviews comes up with a Thematic Issue on Antibiotic Resistance The European Microbiology Forum, creating a new culture of understanding Grants deadlines List of FEMS-sponsored meetings, Aug-Sept 2011 38th FEMS Council Meeting
It will focus on Helicobacter pylori under the title: “Helicobacter pylori: from Basic Science to Clinical Issue”. All scientists with a research interest in this field are invited to attend. The conference offers young scientists and infectious diseases experts the opportunity to dicuss their specific subjects of interest in depth with senior colleagues. The conference aims to: • provide an opportunity for transfer of state-of-the-art knowledge and understanding of Helicobacter pylori as a pathogen between research laboratory-based and clinical microbiologists as well as infectious diseases specialists; • focus and determine the state-of-the-art understanding of Helicobacter pylori as a pathogen and its impact on clinical practice by bringing together the best scientists; • give young scientists the opportunity to meet and interact with senior scientists; and
www.fems-microbiology.org
• offer research-minded clinical microbiologists and infectious diseases specialists the opportunity to update his/her understanding of the conference’s subject. The conference will be held in Eurotel Victoria in Villars-surOllon, a mountain resort close to Geneva. For more information, application procedure and fees, please consult the conference website: www.cnfmi.org.

Antibiotic resistance: How medical use of antibiotics has shaped bacterial evolution This Thematic Issue covers most of the current knowledge about the genetics of the important evolutionary factors involved in antibiotic resistance (i.e., genes, transposons, integrons, plasmids, clones), and how antibiotic resistance evolves and propagates in a complex network of populations.
This Thematic Issue is FREE and can be accessed on http://bit.ly/FEMSREti355
A number of causes modifying these effects (antibiotic or environmental selection, biological costs) and how bioinformatic methods might clarify these complex issues are examined. Understanding the complexity of these processes will pave the path for future therapeutic interventions based on ecology and evolution and contribute to addressing the global problem of antibiotic resistance.
Images of microbes wanted! Do you have beautiful images of microbes and want them to be published? This might be the chance you are waiting for. The FEMS Journals are currently in need of new images to be used in the covers for 2012, like the ones below. The chosen images will be the faces of the journals (one image/journal) for a whole year. The images will also be used for advertising spreads and other marketing products used to endorse the journals.

The European Microbiology Forum, creating a new culture of understanding
The European Microbiology Forum, along with the European Academy of Microbiology, is an initiative of FEMS. It is created for communication, interaction and promotion of microbiology. The EMF has the following objectives: • To make Microbiology more visible and enable Microbiology to be part of decision-making in Europe; • To foster awareness of the potential of European Microbiology Research for the quality of life, economic development and competitiveness of Europe in a global world; • To provide easy accessible and instructive information about Microbiology and related research for the general public, the research community, policy makers, funding agencies and for industry (Info-Web-Portal); and • To develop a concept for proactive EMF activities and to stimulate the advancement of research and education in Microbiology in Europe.
www.fems-microbiology.org
The EMF acts as a communication, promotion and networking board. It aims to be clearly present in the media, to contribute to its goal of driving awareness and positive public opinion of microbiology, among public administrations, students, teachers, and the research and industrial community alike. Communication activities will be broad and shall encompass the active use of new communication media such as YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and others. EMF expects to achieve this goal through communication expert driven visibility of European Academy of Microbiology (EAM) members. Communication activities will allow EMF to be seen as the first port of call for print, web-based and broadcast media (TV/radio) for hot microbiology-related topics as well as being accepted as an essential partner for policy makers, industry and scientific societies in policy making, and policy communication.
