veryone has heard by now that Charleston was voted the #1 City in the World by Travel + Leisure. Here at Charleston Inside Out, we provide the Charleston traveler (and locals as well) the inside scoop on the best places to Shop, Eat, And Play in the area. And speaking of Play, do you exercise when you go on vacation? It’s no secret to those who know me that I’ve become completely obsessed with yoga. I visit Charleston Power Yoga (A Baptiste Studio) on a regular basis and try to catch a class with Holly or Sarah (trust me, this is one of my best Insider Tips). To help you stay in shape even while you’re on vacation, we’ve listed some of the best independent yoga studios in Charleston. Whether you’re staying at the beach, downtown or North Charleston we’ve listed what we think are some of the best places to Salute the Sun. If marathon window shopping is more your style, be sure and check out Insider’s Secrets, which features some fabulous local retailers and their tips on where they like to shop when they’re off duty. If that’s not enough to keep you busy, our Concierge Confidential spotlights Alexandra Bankart from the Luxury Zero George Boutique Hotel and her favorite places to send their guests. We hope you’ll carry a copy of CHARLESTON INSIDE OUT wherever you go, and make it your personal guide to the best city in the world.

GET FRESH CHARLESTON FRESH
When visitors come to Charleston, one of the first things they want to do is sample our local fish and fresh-from-the-boat shrimp. Whether you want your seafood breaded or broiled, sauced or straightforward, there’s a plate with your name on it somewhere in town. Here are just a few delicious choices. Seewee Restaurant is known for its old-fashioned fried fish and shrimp and baskets of hush puppies. Housed in a modest building that will remind you of an old general store, it’s located on the side of Hwy. 17 North just outside Mt. Pleasant. You’ll often find lines on the weekend, but the experience is worth the wait. Indoor/outdoor seating. 4804 Hwy. 17N., Awendaw Coda Del Pesce is a contemporary Italian-influenced restaurant on the Isle of Palms beach. An extensive wine list and offerings that change according to what’s fresh that day are marked by the same urbane style that you’ll find at Trattoria Lucca, Chef Vendrinski’s legendary Italian restaurant in downtown Charleston. 1130 Ocean Blvd., Isle of Palms The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene was named in honor of an old trawler that was broken apart by Hurricane Hugo on the restaurant’s present site on Shem Creek in Mt. Pleasant. The Wreck is low-key and specializes in indigenous seafood prepared in the old Lowcountry way. In summer, the screened-in porch dining area is open to Southern breezes, and it’s kept toasty with heaters in the winter. Open daily spring, summer, fall and ThursdaySunday in winter. 106 Haddrell St., Mt. Pleasant The Codfather serves up the only traditional, authentic British fish ‘n chips, and, yes, that includes sides of gravy and mushy peas. The place is so good that locals want to keep it to themselves, but the secret is out and raves abound. Check out this little-restaurant-that-could Wednesday through Saturday. 1809 Reynolds Ave., North Charleston Fleet Landing is on the harbor in historic downtown Charleston. Its waterfront setting means that it’s always packed with locals and tourists, so reservations are highly recommended. The views and food make this one of the city’s favorite spots to have a drink, order a seafood platter and watch the sun go down. 186 Concord St., Charleston INSIDEOUT | 47

BABY YOU CAN RIDE OUR
! s e k i B Charleston is turning into a cycling town, from daily commuters hauling laptops over the bridges to college students zipping through the streets to class. Barring walking, it’s the best way to see the city at a slowed-down Southern pace. Now, some of the local hotels are getting in on the movement by providing their guests with complimentary bikes during their visits. Check them out when you check in.

Historic old beach houses, celebrity mansions, and local restaurants and bars coexist peacefully for the most part on this beautiful barrier island with family-friendly beaches. You won’t find any hotels or high-rise condos here, but you will find stiff fines for drinking on the beach and unlicensed and off-leash dogs. All the restaurants are on Middle Street, the main drag. Parking can be a problem – patience advised. About a 15-minute drive from downtown.
The fort dates from the Revolutionary War and is open for touring. Kids will love to roam. The Visitors’ Center across the street from the fort has restrooms and exhibits and is open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Days. 1214 Middle St.

STORAGE
Chances are you won’t need everything you moved to your new house in Charleston, but you might not be ready to trash it yet. There are dozens of storage units in the area, or have a POD delivered, fill it at your leisure and have it placed in a climate-controlled center until you’re ready to deal. Out of sight, out of mind.

STUFF PLUS
If you have clothes or furnishings you don’t want or have room for in your new home, chances are that someone else would find a use for them. Donate them Goodwill, and they’ll probably find a second life. There are several retail stores around the Charleston area, some of which have handy drive-through drop-offs. Go to palmettogoodwill. net for a location near you.

SOUTH CAROLINA DEPT OF MOTOR VEHICLES
More than you ever wanted to know about applying for a SC driver’s license, registering vehicles and DMV branches and services. The lines are supposed to move quicker now, but we can’t promise that.
You can explore the infinite benefits of Exfinity on their website, but it’s only a little easier than deciphering the Mayan calendar. Going to an office is sometimes faster – unless the lines are out the door. Good luck!

UH OH! STORM WARNINGS
Get savvy about planning and preparing for Mr. or Ms. Hurricane. Learn your escape routes should there be a mandatory evacuation and what supplies you should have on hand if you just have to batten down the hatches (other than some cases of Beanie Weenis and beer). Check the facts from South Carolina Emergency Management. scemd.org
PALMETTO BUGS
The first time one of these cockroaches on steroids flies at you, you’ll probably begin packing to move back out of state. Just stay calm, and hire a good exterminator to make regular visits to keep them out of your house. And, of course, tread carefully if you get up for a snack in the middle of the night.
