IN THIS ISSUE

I’m the youngest of four and 15 minutes younger than my twin, and my brothers and sister have helped shape the person I am today and how I do business. I never graduated with honors, never went past getting a four-year degree, but I would watch my older brother give an eloquent speech, my sister collect devoted friends and my twin win over everyone he meets with his kindness and smile. Everything I’ve learned is because of them, and that’s why I wanted to dig a little deeper in this issue to find out just how the families of six of our Charleston local businesses manage to work together. Anne’s owners, Sarah and Gary Snyder, are a mother/son retail team who head up their 72-year-old business, and Penny Vaigneur also owns and operates the Copper Penny with her three sons. Finicky Filly on King Street is owned by a mother/daughter team as is Croghan’s Jewel Box, which has been in the same family for more than a century, and siblings Kathleen Hope and Mary Norvell design for their family store, Acquisitions, while sister and brother Ellen and Steve Berlin head up a business started by their ancestors in 1883. It’s businesses like these that make shopping in Charleston such a unique and personal experience. We hope you’ll drop in and say hello and visit all the other independentlyowned shops and restaurants that give the city its entrepreneurial spirit.

FAMILY

n an age of look-alike chains and faceless corporate managers, one of the nicest things about shopping in Charleston is that so many of our businesses are locally owned and operated. Beyond that, they’re also often family affairs. Whether relatives are found behind the scenes or in the front of the store, it’s an art to be able to disagree at work and leave it at the door when you go home. It’s just as tricky to avoid bringing family squabbles into the workplace, and yet somehow all of the relatives in this article manage to walk that tightrope exceptionally well. We asked them to tell us the best things and the biggest challenges about working with family. FACT: Retention at a family-run business is far better on average than non-family. FACT: Family-owned businesses account for 60% of the country’s employment. FACT: If you stop by any of these stores, you’ll probably see a family member who makes sure you enjoy your shopping experience.

Charleston offers lodging as unique as its history. While it is best known for its historic district, gourmet dining and luxury hotels, there is another side that you don’t want to miss. Start by exploring downtown and then head to the outskirts for a few days of adventure. Be Rocked to Sleep Not just for sailors, staying on a boat may be the best night’s sleep you’ll get in years. Gentle waves rock you to sleep and you can sip coffee on the deck while watching dolphins and egrets catch their breakfast. Various boats are available and most have bathrooms (a.k.a., heads) and kitchens (a.k.a., galleys) onboard so it’s more luxurious than camping. Charleston Coastal Charters offers overnight stays as well as various outings on the water. charlestoncoastalcharters.com Wake Up on the Beach Edisto Beach State Park offers ocean front campsites for tents and RVs. The park is perfect for year-round outings, from splashing in the waves to evenings by the fire pit. Prefer to fall asleep to the quiet rustlings of the marsh rather than the sound of crashing waves? You can do that, too, by renting one of the seven cabins on Scott Creek, about a mile and a half from the ocean. Just a short drive from historic Charleston, it’s even a great place to take a day trip. southcarolinaparks.com/edistobeach Island Time Does the thought of escaping to a deserted island ever cross your mind? If so, Coastal Expeditions can make that happen. Take a three-day, all-inclusive expedition to Bulls Island and walk miles of deserted beaches, hike a pristine maritime forest, and catch a glimpse of some of the 290 species of birds that roost here. The Dominick House serves as the base for your stay, professional guides offer insight into this Class One Wilderness, and you’ll even be able to taste the island in the locally sourced meals that are prepared for you. coastalexpeditions.com

Y HERRICK

MADE TO ORDER Charleston’s dizzying blast-off into the universe of unparalleled deliciousness presents restaurant goer’s here with an enviable problem. Instead of what not to order (because almost everything’s really good), it’s a stomach-rumbling internal debate over what is the one dish I must not fail to order. Here are some of my recent picks. 40 | INSIDEOUT

Hominy Grill: Lately, there’s been a big buzz about Hominy’s Big Fat Nasty fried chicken sandwich. You can do even better. Order the shrimp and grits. The gravy is more like a sauce and mushrooms, scallions and really thick bacon adorn what seems like a pound of local, fresh, sweet shrimp over toothsome stone ground grits. 207 Rutledge Ave., Charleston | hominygrill.com Crust Wood Fired Pizza: It’s worth a quick trip from downtown to visit this smoking hot wood fire pizza joint on James Island. Any and all pizzas are great, but do order one of Chef Chorvat’s masterful salads, especially the seductively subtle local Bibb & shaved beet salad topped off with creamy goat cheese, salty pistachios, swaths of pickled onion and just-right vinaigrette. 1956B Maybank Hwy. | crustwoodfirepizza.com The Obstinate Daughter: Chef Jacques Larson is a master of the art of cooking, but he takes pasta to an obscene level of rave-worthy. Don’t miss the ultra-tender gnocchi awash in a beefy, long-braised short rib ragu topped with a plucky horseradish gremolata. 2063 Middle Street, Sullivan’s Island | theobstinatedaughter.com FIG: Chef Mike Lata could probably turn shoe leather into a delicacy. He’s just that masterful. Order the Keegan-Filian chicken liver pate. Served with Dijon mustard, thin slices of toasted baguette and cornichons, it may as well be foie gras, but it’s only about $12 and utterly priceless. 232 Meeting Street, Charleston | eatatfig.com Leon’s Oyster Shop: Leon’s is all about oysters and fried chicken, and I’m sorry, you can’t pick just one. Order the ambrosial char-grilled oysters dressed with lemon, fresh, parsley, butter and nutty Parmesan that melt together into a decadent sauce. Chase those with the fried chicken – hot from the fryer, seeped-to-the-bone brine flavor, thick ‘n crispy with a touch of heat. After, go home and take a nap. 698 King Street, Charleston | leonsoystershop.com

Playing House The refined art of snooping in

CHARLESTON by Stephanie Hunt

52 | INSIDEOUT

Back in the dark ages of the 1970s, I got paid $2.75 an hour to do

what I love: play house, in other people’s homes. My official job title was “babysitter,” but to me the kids were just props; the real draw was the larger stage—the house. Not the home’s architecture or décor so much as the fact that other people, with their revealing wares, messy closets and bookshelf photo galleries, lived there. By snooping around their house, I stepped into the family’s story for those hours while the unwitting parents were partying and I was feeding their kids boxed mac-n-cheese, and checking out their pantry. Charleston is an eye-popping playground for the more grown-up version of snooping. Here it’s an official pastime, a festival even, and thanks to Historic Charleston Foundation’s annual Festival of Houses and Gardens, spring is its heyday. Throughout March and April, many of the peninsula’s most stately homes invite peepers to come plodding through. Docents (such a charming euphemism for “gatekeeper”) welcome you to these private abodes, and while making sure you stay on the designated carpets and keep your paws off the silver, they offer insider nuggets about the 18th century mahogany sideboards, the authentic rice bed, circa 1722, and the joggling board on the piazza. You’ll learn about intricate moldings and fireplace surrounds, and how Loutrel Briggs loved the formal symmetry of an old Charleston garden. But here’s a humble suggestion from an old snooping pro: listen to your imagination as much the docent’s script. Peer past the antiques and the fine artwork (yes, that’s a Thomas Sully portrait) and look for clues about who lived there centuries ago and who lives there now, and conjure what their life was/is like. Smell the hints of their cologne still in the air, notice the book titles (Pat Conroy or Jane Austen?), study the family ski trip photos – this is Charleston. The living pulse of a patina’d city, one with fancy buildings and elegant architecture, to be sure, but in my humble and prying opinion, one that’s colorful and fascinating more because of its colorful people. For my 50 bucks (price of a Festival of Houses ticket), I’m happy to know how to identify a Palladian window, but I’m tickled Pink House pink to discover that the resident of an enormous Battery manse has a thing for tacky owl paperweights. Besides official house tours, there are other ways to get your snoop on. Hop on a horse carriage elevated to the perfect height for peeking into residential windows and over garden gates. Take an evening stroll, pausing to look into illuminated rooms. Wander down neighborhood streets, and eavesdrop on dog-walker conversations and smell the roast coming from the Single House over there, the one with peeling paint and a rusted porch swing. Visit our museums and museum houses, for sure, but remember, the tales of yesteryear are being retold, relived, re-construed, right here, right now, by real people. Clues to these stories are right under our noses, if we’re nosy enough to find them. INSIDEOUT | 53

Insider Field Trip

By Annie Reeves

74 | INSIDEOUT

Paul Zoeller-Photographer

Just 25 miles outside of Charleston is a sweet Southern gem: Summerville, South Carolina. This suburb easily stands on its own with lots of attractions and activities for the Charleston tourist and resident alike. Also, it’s the birthplace of sweet tea — and we all love that southern concoction.

A day trip to Summerville is hardly enough time to cover it all, but it’s definitely worth your time. If you’d like, you can follow the city’s Sweet Tea Trail to get a taste of everything Summerville has to offer. Start out with caffeine from Coastal Coffee Roasters’ coffeehouse — aka, the “C.”There’s plenty of room to get a little work done or enjoy sipping your drink of choice in silence. Next, take some time to explore downtown. There are countless antique stores and specialty stores for browsing: the charming children’s bookstore, A Very Little Bookstore; Marigolds, a home, garden and soul store; and antique goodness at Main Street Antiques and Relic Revival. Once you’ve had your shopping fix, head over to Accent on Wine for lunch. They have daring and delicious open-faced sandwiches as well as cheese and charcuterie galore! I can’t recommend the Hot Apple Pie (Granny Smith apples, brie and fig jam) option more highly. Have the friendly bartender pair a refreshing glass of wine with your lunch choice. The options are truly endless. If you’re like me and love a bite of something sweet after a savory meal, Guerin’s Pharmacy next door is the place for an ice cream cone or milkshake. Have a seat, and enjoy the delightful, family-owned atmosphere of this 140-year-old pharmacy. For the afternoon, there are many tours of homes, gardens, and plantations available. Middleton Place, a National Historic Landmark, gives several different types of tours each day including garden and home tours (find them all at middletonplace.org), and a restaurant in which to dine. Linwood Bed and Breakfast offers a garden tour with master gardener Linda Shelbourne. She will guide you around the home and garden and narrate the extensive history of the area while describing her absolutely stunning (and award-winning) gardens. Finally, you must finish off your day in Sweet Tea Country with an ice-cold refresher. Check out The Eclectic Chef downtown for a tea bar that’s also a stop along the Sweet Tea Trail. Cheers to a day well spent in Sweet Summerville! INSIDEOUT | 75
