They say you can never go home, but that’s exactly what I did six months ago. After spending the last five years in New York, I finally returned to Charleston with a renewed appreciation for the city. I’m happy to see many of the trailblazing shops that recognized Charleston’s potential early on thriving - Berlins, RTW, Worthwhile, Copper Penny, M. Dumas, Bob Ellis, Morris Sokol, Birlant’s, Anne’s, Croghan’s - and excited to discover new businesses that are adding a whole new vibrant dimension to the city. Our staff and contributors live, work and play in Charleston, and we want to share the love. We’ll let you in on the hot spots and the latest scoops. The best side trips and the newest shops. The chefs that have made the city food-famous. Where to catch a wave or shuck an oyster. Sophisticated cocktail bars and sweet tea like our mothers made. Brew pubs and wine bars where you might meet a local poet or digital entrepreneur. The best beaches for kids, Kindle time or kite sailing. Old plantations and up-and-coming neighborhoods. Even inside info on moving here. From historic to hip and everything in between. Tuck our guidebook in your pocket, and get to know Charleston InsideOut. Because we know you’ll be back.

hether it’s a work trip, a solo getaway, or maybe a new adventure and fresh start (that would be me), there are many occasions where you might find yourself in charming Charleston alone. For years, I was hesitant to venture out to dinner or a bar by myself, but since my move to Charleston, I have become increasingly comfortable with the idea. In fact, I’ve grown to love it.
8 | INSIDEOUT
There are so many places where I enjoy pulling up to the bar, ordering a glass of wine (or maybe a Westbrook One Claw), and enjoying an app or two. The newest and easiest place to do so: 167 Raw. Now open on East Bay Street, this tiny raw bar has locations in Charleston and Nantucket – so you know the seafood is good. Their marble-top counter seats just a few people, and you’re lucky to be one of them. However, don’t expect a solo dining experience just because you walked in alone. Enjoy chatting with the guys behind the bar and maybe with a neighbor or two. That’s one of the things I love about Charleston – most people are eager to carry on a conversation, play the name game, and tell you about their favorite spots in town. After a lobster roll or some fish tacos at 167 Raw, I love to wander through Ansonborough towards Upper King Street. Enjoy the hustle of people walking to and from dinners until you arrive at The Cocktail Club. This refined upstairs bar boasts a rooftop terrace, cozy corners, and a carefully created cocktail menu. If you’re a fan of spicy, you have to try the Double Standard cocktail: serrano infused gin, cucumber vodka, ginger, cilantro, and celery bitters. It’s my personal favorite cocktail in the city. If you’d like a taste of Charleston culture, the French Quarter Art Walk takes place four times a year, with the next one scheduled for December 5. During the walks, gallery owners stay open for extended hours (5-8pm) and serve wine (and sometimes apps) so that people can stroll from venue to venue and peruse new works and each other. Locals turn out in droves, but it’s full of discerning tourists as well. You can meet the artists, mingle and make conversation with strangers or just enjoy being on your own. It’s solely up to you.

FESSIONS OF A HOUSEKEEPER N O C by Jeff Moss
I know, I know – Confessions of a Housekeeper! No, we’re not casting a reality show. Instead, this is a story paying tribute to hotel housekeepers worldwide, with a special thanks to those here in Charleston. 12 | INSIDEOUT
W
e chose two of what we consider Charleston’s most prestigious and renowned hotels –The Wentworth Mansion downtown and The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Resort – and asked them just how they maintain their high level of service and excellence. Both credited their staff, with an overwhelming emphasis on the Housekeeping Department. Being a housekeeper is for the most part, a crucial behindthe-scenes job that usually goes unrecognized. With that in mind we asked one housekeeper from each hotel exactly what their day entails along with some of the things they do to make a guest’s stay more enjoyable. Alethia Laboard, a housekeeper for the past 13½ years with Wentworth Mansion, cleans six of their 21 rooms on a daily basis and makes sure to leave a bucket of ice in each room as her little “above and beyond.” Yvonne Allen, a four-year employee at The Sanctuary, services 11 rooms in the morning and another whopping 22 in the evening! One of her personal touches is that if she sees a book that’s dog-eared, she’ll go ahead and place a bookmark where you left off so as not to ruin your book. Then we brought up that ever-pressing question we all want to know but are maybe too embarrassed to ask, “Should I leave a tip?” The answer to that, in our opinion, is an unequivocal yes, but our actual question to both women was, “Would you rather the guests leave their room in an orderly fashion or leave a tip”? Both of their answers were generally the same: -- a tip is greatly appreciated, but they do the same detailed job no matter how the room is left. Their main concern is that guests are happy and return for another visit soon. As a frequent traveler, I understand and appreciate how nice it is to come back to a tightly made bed, fresh towels and, of course, the fully RE-STOCKED mini-bar! As a rule, I leave $5.00 a day per person. I realize this may be a little on the high side, but in return, for good service when you’re on the road, it’s well worth it. After all, we leave a 20 percent tip for wait staff and bartenders, and they certainly don’t turn down our beds and clean our toilet bowls! The next time you stay at a hotel we hope you’ll remember your housekeepers, those unsung heroes, with a generous gratuity that says thank-you for making my day (and my bed). INSIDEOUT | 13

Dining out can be pricey, but there are ample choices around Charleston that will leave your belly satisfied without walloping your wallet. Cypress: Savor a wood-grilled burger with bacon jam and pimiento cheese for $8 from the upstairs bar menu any night of the week, or better yet, on Monday’s legendary $5 burger night at one of Charleston’s most cosmopolitan dining spots. 167 East Bay Street, downtown.

Heart Woodfire Kitchen: This kitchen’s ablaze with goodness at great prices. A mere $10 will buy you a plate of tender smoked chicken with a side (go for the crispy russet potatoes) any day of the week, and the same can be had day or night on Tuesdays for $6. 1622 Highland Ave., James Island. Roadside Seafood Restaurant: This food truck-turned-restaurant gives some serious “bam” for your buck with a 16-ounce, $6 bowl of She Crab soup, brimming with sweet crab, roe and lip-smacking flavor. 807 Folly Rd., James Island. Swig and Swine: S & S’s chef/owner spends nights at this ‘cue joint to cajole max flavor out of his smoky meats and house made sausage, which comes wrapped up in a bun with one side (try the baked beans with brisket) for $9. 1217 Savannah Hwy., W. Ashley. Indaco: Happy hours get extra happy with Indaco’s $10 Margherita Pizza special. Fresh from the wood-fired pizza, it can be yours at this easy price from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday-Friday. 526 King Street, downtown. Lana: Lana’s Happy Hour Tapas menu (5 - 7 p.m., bar only, Mon-Fri) allows you to mix and match a few of the $5 items or go for the gusto with the belly-filling, delectable Lamb Kefta or Shrimp Roasted in Tomato Sauce for $9 each. 210 Rutledge Avenue, downtown. Basico: The best $10 bet at this trendy taqueria “up north” is a choice of three enchiladas (brisket in adobe, chicken in a mole, or vegetarian with Chihuahua cheese) served with a choice of three incredible sauces and one side – don’t miss the coconut rice. 4399 McCarthy St., N. Charleston. Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit: From 10pm - 2am, Fri/Sat, fill up on a large buttermilk fried chicken biscuit stacked with house pickles and slathered with sriracha mayo for $7.95. 476½ King St., downtown. Santi’s Restaurante: This Mexican mainstay makes fragrant, rich chicken stock each morning and by evening, it’s transformed into Mama’s Chicken Soup, a heaping bowl of pulled chicken, beef tortillas and a garden-full of garnishes, including avocado, sour cream and cilantro. It’s a meal in a bowl for $8.50. 1302 Meeting Street, Upper Neck. Pearlz Oyster Bar: Belly up to a dozen local oysters (steamed or raw) with a zesty mignonette or cocktail sauce for $9.95 or pair the grilled Mahi tacos (2 for $6.95)) with a bowl of house-made chips dipped in thick blue-cheese dressing ($2.50) for a royal feast at peasant prices during Happy Hour, Mon-Fri, 4 to 7pm. 135 East Bay, downtown and 9 Magnolia Road, West Ashley.

ou’ve planned, you’ve saved and you’ve reserved a place to stay in Charleston. And then it rains. And rains some more. No beach, no biking, no strolling the Battery, but there’s still plenty to do and see in the city. Just a warning, though, if the tide is high and the rain is heavy, flooding near the Market can be heavy. Find some higher ground and have a drink or two till the water recedes. It’s the Charleston thing to do. Keeping kids corralled in a hotel room on vacation is pretty close to torture for everyone involved. Let them work off some energy at the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry. The interactive exhibits include a pirate’s ship, medieval creativity castle, art room and shadow room. Have lunch at one of the nearby restaurants and then head off to Tom’s Toys to let them explore the intriguing Kapla block playroom. Tom’s Toys: 125 Market St.; kaplaus.com | Children’s Museum: 25 Ann St.; explorecml.org Strike it rich. There’s more than bowling at The Alley. You can also grab some good grub and a beer and watch a game on one of their big screen TVs. Kids will love playing the oldschool video arcade games, skee ball or basketball. 131 Columbus St. | thealleycharleston.com Climbing the walls? Do it for real -- indoors where it’s nice and dry. You can get a day pass ($13) and rent shoes ($3) at Coastal Climbing, and you don’t need prior experience in bouldering. You’ll get a thorough introduction, and you can also pay extra for a class or one-on-one instruction. 708 King St. | coastalclimbing.com The Historic City Market at the intersection of Meeting and Market Streets dates from 1841 and was recently renovated to include The Great Hall. Under its skylight roof, you can dawdle through micro boutiques, explore vendors in the nearby open-air sheds (covered but not enclosed) and stop for dessert at Kaminsky’s. It’s open daily (except Christmas Day) with plenty of restaurants in the area. thecharlestoncitymarket.com Drop in on a spinning class at Charleston RIDE and burn off some of the calories you’ve been stockpiling during vacation. Check out their daily classes online. 74 Wentworth St. | charlestonride.com The Shops at Belmond Charleston Place are an absorbing diversion whether you’re buying or browsing. Cap your tour with drinks, tapas and live music at The Thoroughbred Club, the hotel’s lobby bar. And cheer up – “the sun’ll [probably] come out tomorrow.” 205 Meeting St. | charlestonplaceshops.com INSIDEOUT | 53

Long before the first Model Ts rolled down Charleston’s narrow, sandy streets, the bicycle ruled. Back in 1869, the curious new “velocipede” first took the peninsula by storm, and two-wheeled traveling soon became haute fashion for this ever-fashionable port city. Fastforward nearly 150 years and the velocipede (updated in carbon, fixie or cruiser variety) remains the vehicle of choice for Charlestonians in the know and on the go. Navigating the peninsula’s crowded streets and cobblestoned alleyways can be a chore by car, but a wind-in-your-hair delight by bike. Whiz past snarled traffic; eavesdrop on carriage tours; follow your whim down enchanting streets (we especially love a slow roll down Legare, Logan, ZigZag Alley, and Church Streets); pause to read historic markers; pull over to sample Jeni’s ice cream or a crepe at Queen Street Grocery; smell jasmine and tea olive in the air; peer over garden gates; and best of all, don’t waste your precious vacation time hunting down (and paying for) a parking spot. A bike in Charleston is like a gondola in Venice – the best way to really see and experience the city. One of our favorite routes starts at Hampton Park (where you can ditch your car free of charge). Either pedal along the park’s dedicated bike path or hop on the inner garden loop (hard-packed gravel), meander over to the Citadel to check out the parade grounds (and world’s largest class ring), then bike down Lockwood Boulevard to Brittlebank Park, and continue (with caution by the bridges/intersection) past the City Marina (beware yacht envy) and then right on Chisolm Street toward the Battery. Follow the Battery up East Bay to Waterfront Park. For the Lowcountry’s highest view, tackle the Ravenel Bridge, which will reward your effort with a spectacular panorama of the islands, harbor, Fort Sumter, Mount Pleasant and the peninsula.
Need more reasons to ride? Arrive by bike at Taco Boy (Huger Street) and enjoy a free margarita. Exploring Charleston by bike burns enough calories to offset an extra IPA at Edmond’s Oast. Yep, you might sweat a tad, but there’s always a breeze on a bike.
Other local two-wheelin’ tips: Rental bikes (and helmets) available downtown at: The Bicycle Shoppe (280 Meeting Street), Affordabike (573 King Street) and some hotels. On King Street, park bicycles only in designated bike corrals. Obey all traffic rules. Ride on the road WITH traffic, not on sidewalks. Use hand signals; if riding at night, bicyclists must have a front bike light and rear reflector or light. Find other local routes at Map My Ride, coastalcyclists.com or the Charleston Bikes app.

There’s no better way to spend a day outside Charleston than to venture up Hwy 17 N to the Awendaw area about 20 miles north of the city. Take a hike in the Francis Marion National Forest to work up an appetite, tour the amazing Center for Birds of Prey and have dinner at the SeeWee Restaurant before heading back to the city. Check the hours and days each is open below in order to fit in everything you want to do. 64 | INSIDEOUT
FRANCIS MARION NATIONAL FOREST This lush landscape comprised of more than 250,000 acres is filled with pine stands, marshes and swamps shaded by towering bald cypress trees. Four wilderness areas give visitors a chance to view the forest as it might have been earlier in history. Best of all, there are numerous hiking, biking and interpretive trails throughout the forest. With all that’s offered, the best way to get oriented is to make your first stop the Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center on Hwy 17 N to get an overview from the staff on the recreational opportunities available in the national forest area. While you’re there, take advantage of the Center’s interpretive displays, one-mile nature trail and live viewing of endangered red wolves! Sewee Visitor & Environmental Education Ctr. 9am-5pm, Wednesday through Saturday. 5821 Highway 17 N, Awendaw. | 843-928-3368 | fms.gov/seweecenter CENTER FOR BIRDS OF PREY Surrounded by Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge and the Francis Marion National Forest, the Center’s main focus is treating and releasing injured raptors and shorebirds. Their avian clinic provides medical care to more than 500 birds a year and has been called the best of its kind worldwide by no less than Jack Hanna. Admission includes guided tours (10:30am and 2:00 pm), visits to the Owl Wood, free-flight demonstrations (11:30am and 3:00pm) and educational exhibits. The Center encourages you to allow a minimum of two hours for your visit. Thursday through Saturday, 10am-5pm $15 adults, $10 ages 6-16, under 6 free. 4872 Seewee Road, Awendaw 843-971-7474 | thecenterforbirdsofprey.org SEEWEE RESTAURANT Last, but not least in our view, is a stop at the homey Seewee Restaurant for southern-style seafood, hushpuppy baskets, down-home vegetables and homemade cakes. It’s a far cry from the rave-reviewed foodie temples in Charleston, but one of a kind in its own right. Perched right on the roadside, the restaurant is easy to miss if you’re going too fast. There are often people waiting for tables if you come on a busy day, but the experience is well worth the wait. No room for dessert? Take it home for breakfast. Otherwise you’ll need another trip back before your vacation is over. Lunch and dinner Mon-Sat; brunch & dinner Sundays. 4808 Hwy 17 N, Awendaw | 843-928-3609 INSIDEOUT | 65

the sweet life
just three doors down
A few years back, Chad Beaver chose I’On as his dream neighborhood for its beauty as well as its residents, who are made up of single professionals, young families as well as retirees. Life in I’On more than exceeded his expectations. He soon married his wife, Sarah, and awhile after that, Sarah and he welcomed a son, Wade, into their world. Life events made finding a larger home for their growing family a must. That’s when the perfect home, just three doors down, came on the market and fate ran its course. No moving truck required!

A SHARP WIT
& A KEEN KNIFE by Helen Mitternight
86 | INSIDEOUT
What do the fashionable wear in Charleston? Stiletto heels wedge into cobblestone streets. Suit coats bake under the Palmetto sun. I found when I moved here less than a year ago that I had to purge my closet of fussy power suits and invest in comfortable, stylish flats, cross-body bags that leave my hands free for walking the dogs everywhere, and big sun-blocking hats. Hats that actually fit so they don’t blow off in the playful Holy City breezes that can lift hats – and skirts – in an unholy tease. But the most “Charlestonian” accessories can’t be found in Vogue. I figured that out when a neighbor asked if I had been to an oyster roast yet. I had not. I love oysters in almost any form. Fried, Rockefeller, floating in gumbo.
{
“Of course, you’ll want to bring your oyster knife,” the neighbor said. “My what?” “Your oyster knife! And a glove if you have one.” “But I don’t know how to shuck an oyster! They’re already open when I get them,” I said in a bit of a panic.
White Bone Engraved Oyster Knife Croghan’s Jewel Box 308 King Street 843-723-3594
“Oh, don’t worry, I’m sure someone there will help you. It’s not hard. I’ll bet even you can get it.” That slight little twist at the end, meant without malice, seems typical of Charleston conversation. Like the best Southern cocktail, as savory as it is sweet, Charleston conversation has a wit and a slight snap that you have to listen carefully to catch, and you don’t want to leave the house without your own sharp wit. And so, with my first oyster roast, I finally became fashionable. Turns out that if you’re really a fashionable Charlestonian, forget white glove society; it’s all about oyster glove society. A little wit adds spice. And a little oyster knife pries open not only bivalves, but also the friendship of the locals. INSIDEOUT | 87
