ho doesn’t love a good wedding? I have been of both minds at different times in my life. Why waste the money? Put a down payment on a nice house. Of course twenty years later when the children want to see wedding pictures…. There are two sides to every coin. We wanted to feature a wedding in the last issue of Charleston Woman Magazine for all you ladies who will be getting engaged over the holidays. Send us your “engagement” story and we will chose one of you to feature on next year’s cover! This issue of Charleston Woman is filled with the stories of several inspirational ladies. It is always our hope that you will read something in our pages which will inspire you to do something you have never done before, or make a positive change in your life, or just be grateful for the life you have. It is important to understand why we do what we do. When my father died, I began to understand the power of sharing a story. I met many women who had lost their fathers. It was through those stories that I began to realize that life would go on. I would smile again. I would find joy again. We bring you the stories of these incredibly strong, inspiring women to encourage you in the same way. If you are dealing with loss, or change, or a new beginning, someone else has been there. May you find hope and encouragement in their stories. Every advertiser in these pages has made a personal commitment to you, the Charleston Woman, to provide quality products and services as well as superior customer service. Please use them and be sure to let them know you found them in Charleston Woman Magazine. This is a busy time of year for all of us. I hope during this holiday season you will be able to just celebrate and enjoy the real reason for the season. God Bless and see you in 2015! Lori Samples Duncan

hen Deborah Estes and James Hong first met in a college classroom they had no idea they would one day marry. “I noticed him because he always looked sad or at least disinterested in class,” Deborah remembers. At the time Deborah was in a band and on a marketing mission to promote it. She asked people in the class to go on Facebook and accept her friend request. That was the beginning of their friendship. "He looked surprised when I asked his name, then proceeded to send him a friend request. He actually accepted the request and we began a Facebook friendship.” Of course, James had a different view of the encounter. “I think the moment she saw me in computer class, she loved me,” he smiles.
love of God and our dedication of our lives together to serve Him,” Deborah states. “It was our dream wedding in reality!”
Over time, they got to know each other. Deborah discovered James had just returned from two service tours – one in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. “He is a Marine, and I was on a mission to share with him the peace and love of God I saw he desperately needed,” she explains. “Through that mission, we became great friends!”
Of course, there was some humor during the ceremony when the pastor asked, “Who gives this woman to be with this man?” Deborah’s father paused a little too long, so the ring bearer shouted as loud as he could, “ME!!!” in response. The church burst into laughter.
James knew this relationship was turning into more than friendship. “I knew she was the one for me,” he says. “Every time I would make a mistake or do something dumb, she never gave up on me. She always wanted the best for me and believed in me when no one else did.”
There were other memorable parts of the wedding. “This is not something most people have as part of their wedding,” Deborah says. “But, foot washing is an ancient custom that speaks of humility and
service to one another.” So, the couple washed each other’s feet. Since the groom is Korean, the couple followed tradition in a Korean ceremony. “They provide a table with dates (which represents girls) and chestnuts (which represents boys.) Each family takes turns coming up to the table to grab however many boys or girls they desire the newly married couple to have. The couple holds a cloth and tries to catch the dates and/or chestnuts thrown. Finally, however many dates and chestnuts the couple caught inside the cloth represents how many children they will have,” Deborah explains. “It was definitely a lot of fun for the
whole family and it really was a cultural experience for many of our guests!” Now, as a married couple, they look to their future together. “I am really looking forward to having kids with my wife. I love kids and I already have baby fever,” James confesses. “I just think it will be a blast to raise a family with Deborah.” “I look forward to traveling the world with my husband,” Deborah says. “I could not imagine life without him and I know going to different countries and experiencing cultures with him will be even more interesting!”
It was a formal affair when they married in July of 2014 at St. Luke’s Chapel. “The wedding ceremony was beautiful with string instruments. It intertwined our www.charlestonwomanonline.com

hen Dianne Thomas first thought of opening a business in a historic home in Charleston, she never thought of
buying a pink house. But, when she drove by one on East Richardson Avenue, it was the one house she couldn’t help but notice! “When I pulled up to the house I thought ‘Oh my gosh, how many thousands of gallons of paint will it take to cover a pink house?’ I just don’t think I can live in a pink house,” she recalls thinking at the time. She decided to check on the zoning anyway, and when she described the house the clerk said, “Oh, you mean the pink house? Everybody in Summerville knows where the pink house is.” She laughed, but she knew if she bought the house it would need to stay pink. Originally, Dianne had wanted to open a tea room, but due to zoning regulations her option was to open a bed and breakfast instead. “I had never even stayed in a bed and breakfast,” she remembers. So, she did her research. She had always worked in service industries, so she and her husband, Ken, decided to buy the house and take on a new business venture. The name of the business came to her while on her treadmill. “I have been swimming with whales and dolphins for years. I have pictures of whales and dolphins in front of the treadmill along with a picture of two dolphins coming into the circle called eternal love,” Dianne explains. “I was looking at that picture. The dolphins were pink and I thought ‘oh, it’s the pink dolphin.’ So, that’s how I got its name.” It came to her later that pink is the color of the heart and the dolphin
is an intuitive healer with a joy for life that openly reaches out to others. “What makes the house special is that it holds a very healing and loving energy inside it,” she says. Dianne decided to offer Reiki treatments and classes at the Pink Dolphin. Reiki is a Japanese word meaning "Universal Life Energy." She is a licensed teacher of Reiki with the International Center for Reiki Training, and is only one of 28 teachers in the world licensed through the Center. She and her husband became Reiki Masters the same month they bought the house so they could start teaching.
me, it’s never really been an issue. We been doing this now for 11 years now,” she says. “We’ve just learned how to make it work, and make time to do the things we need to do so we don’t feel tied down to the business. I think it’s about your attitude and perspective.”
“I’ve always treated all my guests with the understanding that I want to make their experience the best it can be. I make it all about them. I think that is the key in any service business,” she states. “Making them feel very special is the core of how I run my business.”
“Reiki helps to reduce the stress in the body. It also promotes healing and is very good for relaxation and emotional healing,” Dianne states. “People come from all over the United States to take my Reiki classes. They get treatments which are usually one hour. I also do what I call a two hour session where I help them through life coaching. Actually, I call it soul coaching. I’m helping the person to see life through a new prospective. Changing a person’s perception will help heal their body and it’s also teaching them how to love themselves, therefore they have more fulfilling relationships.” Some may ask Dianne what it has been like working with her spouse since they opened in 2003. “For www.charlestonwomanonline.com

Make Aiken your Great Escape
I
f you are looking for the perfect holiday getaway, make Aiken your great escape! The beautiful city of Aiken captures the spirit of the season and offers a southern landscape
that features historic homes, beautiful parkways and peaceful pathways, a lively downtown, and events for the yuletide.
Hopelands Gardens, a 14 acre estate that opened in 1969 as a public garden, is a serene mixture of oak trees, magnolias, and stunning cedars that are brought to life during the holiday season. The gardens are illuminated with over 1.5 miles of holiday displays with over 100,000 lights. Have hot chocolate, and on select nights enjoy an outdoor concert, watch a movie or visit Mrs. Claus. If your dream is to visit the Land of Sweets and to see the Sugar Plum Fairy, performances of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker will be performed by the Aiken Civic Ballet at the University of South Carolina’s Etherredge Center. The Aiken Civic Ballet is South Carolina’s longest continuously operating Dance Company, while the Etherredge Center features a 687 seat theater known for its acoustical quality. Try something new this year. Instead of watching Frank Capra’s classic holiday movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” on television, come see it performed on stage. The Aiken Community Playhouse, located in downtown Aiken, will feature several showings of the touching play. Are you interested in fine dining and great music? You can find both at the Stables Restaurant at Rose Hill Estate. Various artists perform a variety of musical styles including bluegrass and jazz at the historic estate. Built in 1898 as a winter colony residence, the Rose Hill Estate occupies an entire city block in downtown Aiken. Tis the season to shop, so you need to add an afternoon downtown to your itinerary. It is a special place to spend the afternoon. Have lunch at one of the many restaurants like the Aiken Brewing Company, where they brew a variety of beers. Then visit the unique and

eclectic shops. You’ll be able to find something special for anyone on your shopping list. “Downtown Aiken offers small town charm with big city amenities,” says Elizabeth Harm, Tourism Supervisor with the City of Aiken. “From fine boutiques to unique gift shops there is something fun for everyone to explore. And, the restaurants throughout Aiken offer every taste bud an opportunity to be tickled. Of course, some of my personal favorites are our quiet parks and parkways. It’s nice to just stroll and take in the beautiful City.” One thing is certain - Aiken isn’t just a place to visit during the holidays. “Christmas is just one special time that we encourage visitors to come to Aiken! Aiken is a beautiful place to visit year around,” Harm states. “Most weekends guests can find a street fair, festival or concert happening in Aiken. And, our Farmers Market is a fun place to explore on Saturday mornings. Also, there is the Saturday morning historic tour. You climb aboard our trolley and learn all the wonderful stories and history lessons that make Aiken unique… making a weekend of Aiken is a great choice.” Harm suggests when arriving in Aiken you start your exploration at the Aiken Visitors Center and Train Museum (406 Park Avenue). The staff and volunteers can help visitors plan a trip you won’t forget. “We welcome special guests to Aiken…and everyone visiting is a special guest to us!” she adds. So, make Aiken your new weekend destination. You’ll be glad you did! (Please visit http://visitaikensc.com for more information).

elinda and Lindsay Tompkins both dreamed of owning their own business one day, so when the opportunity to purchase the business where Melinda was working became available, they
decided to take it. “I’ve always thought about it, but didn’t think it would happen so soon,” Melinda states. “I don’t think I could do it by myself successfully, but Lindsay and I make a great team.” Lindsay was excited at the prospect of going into business with her sister-in-law too. “We get along really well and I felt we could thrive off of each other’s personalities. We are both pretty upbeat, cheerful, and easy going,” she says. Lindsay had been working for years as a dental assistant and wanted a change, while Melinda was working primarily as a graphic designer at PostNet and loved it. When the previous owners decided to sell or close the store, it was the perfect time to act. “I had grown to love the customers who appreciate PostNet so much,” Melinda recalls. “I spoke with Lindsay, and we knew we would make great partners to keep the business going.” PostNet is a printing, shipping, business services company, with a heavy emphasis on the printing. They can print anything from business cards to banners to promotional items to wedding invitations. They also ship through FedEx, UPS, DHL and USPS,

and offer other services such as graphic design, copying, binding, notary public, and faxing. “Melinda worked at PostNet when the opportunity to buy it came along. She is incredibly familiar with doing everything in the store. She just had to teach me,” Lindsay explains. “I mainly run the counter sales, do the marketing, and manage the behind the scenes paperwork to keep our business running. I love my job! I enjoy interacting with people and helping them out.” “I do the graphic design, print production, quoting, customer service, and ordering of supplies,” Melinda says. “I love doing the graphic design, printing and sign making. I also love helping customers to get what they need when they need it; they are always so appreciative of the work we do, and the timely manner in which we do it.” Both women are very proud of the service they offer. “We are friendly and helpful, and

we want our customers to have a great experience every time they come through our doors,” Lindsay states. Melinda agrees, “Our great quality and very quick turnaround are key on the printing side. On the shipping side, we have great customer service, our lines move quickly and we will do anything to make sure our customers leave happy and satisfied.” As female business owners they know the success of the business falls squarely on their shoulders, yet they encourage other potential women business owners
to give it a try. “Make sure the business is something you are truly passionate about,” Melinda advises. “You must accept help from others; it is very difficult to do everything yourself and still enjoy what you do.” “You can do it if you really want to! It is truly worth all the hard work when you remember what you’re doing it for,” Lindsay states. Janis Hoffman
Woman
The Behind the
MAN By: Patti McGrath
I
t’s a dilemma many women face. Do I continue my career when my child is born or should I be a stay at home mom? Janis Hoffman struggled to make the decision. “It was a very difficult decision for me to leave work,” she remembers. “I had a job that I loved with a great company, and I felt that I was an important part of a team. I was afraid that leaving my career would mean losing a large part of my own identity and self-worth.” After much consideration, she decided to stay home. “I decided to stop working when our son was three and we were considering having another child,” Janis says. “There are so many women who are able to strike that balance, and I think they are amazing! Having been on both sides of the fence, as a working mom and as a stay at home mom, I think they each have their own unique set of challenges.” “No one warns you about what I call the ‘Guilt Gene’ that kicks in when you have a baby. You feel guilty if you are working and aren’t home with him, and then when you stop working, you feel guilty about that, too!” she laughs. “Truthfully, it took some getting used to. My new ‘bosses’ were much more demanding, and I traded my suits for yoga pants and flats. For me, I eventually found that the right fit was to be
at home with my kids. Now I feel that I am an integral part of a new team…and it’s pretty awesome! I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to stay home with the kids, and to have a great husband who is also a wonderful father.” Janis is married to David Hoffman of the Hoffman Law Firm in Charleston. “Dave and I met in a very surprising way. I was attending a medical conference in Myrtle Beach at a resort that happened to be hosting a legal conference at the same time,” Janis states. “We passed each other in the hallways several times and exchanged smiles, and eventually ended up on the same elevator. We started chatting and I think we both missed our floors, but it was worth it! We met up later on for dinner, and the rest is history!”
She moved to David’s hometown of Charleston. “I love everything about living in Charleston,” she exclaims. “Charleston has the art, food, culture and diversity of a larger city, but the pride and sense of community of a town. There is a laid-back vibe that is evident from the smiling faces you pass on the streets to the pop of flip-flops in every direction. I believe that Charleston will help our children grow in into well-rounded adults who will have a deep love for the natural beauty and community of their wonderful hometown.” “Dave and I have two wonderful children. Our son Mason is seven, and daughter Kayden is four. Watching them grow has been the biggest joy of my life,” she says. But, her interest in children goes beyond her own. She volunteers at Darkness to Light. “The charity is making
a big impact in the fight to stop child sexual abuse. As a mother, I want to see every child have the happy, safe childhood. They help to educate people on the warning signs and how to spot the abuse so that we can all better protect the children of our community.” “Janis is an amazing wife and mother who always puts others in front of herself,” says husband, David. “She is truly a blessing to us all. Her support of my endeavors with Hoffman Law Firm is incredible. She is a perfect sounding board for new ideas I have professionally. She is also very involved and interested in local charities on top of everything else she does. She is incredibly smart and loving and I wouldn't know what to do without her.”

Our goal is to give each customer exactly what they want.” New Creations Salon is a down-to-earth hair care and nail salon. They don’t perm your eyelashes, but if you want a great salon cut, curl, blow-dry style, color, or to straighten your hair, New Creations Salon is the perfect place. Their nail services include manicures, pedicures, acrylics or gels, and nail extensions. With many years of combined experience to share, they provide all of these services in an expert manner.
In 1987 Wanda and Chip renovated property in Summerville, South Carolina and opened New Creations Salon. About twelve years ago, Wanda’s sister, Renee’, moved from Washington, DC where she had worked as a stylist for a number of years. Renee' joined her sister and nephew at the salon and has created a wonderful group of customers. New Creations Salon is fortunate to also have Danielle Davis and Nicole Smith on staff. Danielle, who has been with them for about eight years, is the resident “Hair Extensions Specialist”. Nicole, who is the newest member of the staff, specializes in the trendiest cutting- edge styles. We are professional and in the salon, as Chip would say, ‘It's business.’ When we have a rift in our personal life, it might be a little quieter than usual, but we would never make our customers uncomfortable." New Creations is a full-service salon offering both nail care and hair care for men, women, and well-behaved children. Wanda said that the only thing she doesn’t like about the salon business is that with appointments already set up, you can’t always come and go as you please. On the other hand, you can set your schedule up ahead of time to be as free as you want or need to be. Otherwise, she loves being in the salon. Her comment was, “If you have a problem and you can’t find the answer in a beauty salon, then something is very wrong. We get such a wide array of people in the salon that it doesn’t matter what we need - there will be someone coming for service who can answer any question or help us solve whatever situation we might be dealing with. Whether we need a doctor or lawyer or almost any kind of service person, we will probably see one over the course of a day or two. “ Wanda commented that going to work in the salon is “… almost like having a party every day. You have people coming and going all the time. We have made many wonderful friendships over the years.” She also remarked, “people like that they can count on us. We have been in the same location with the same phone number since 1987. We offer expert services at reasonable prices and we’ll be here to answer the phone when you call for an appointment.” The salon is open Monday through Saturday, 9am to 5 pm and will work on Sundays by appointment.

I was now the patient.” Smith was understandably distraught. Her sister Cindy had been diagnosed with breast cancer when she was only 36 years old. Her cancer was advanced when it was discovered. She fought her battle for years before cancer took her in 2003, leaving behind her husband and three children. “Cindy taught me the importance of truly living and enjoying every day,” Smith states. “She made sure that she enjoyed every minute with their boys. She was always so positive and would go for treatment and then go to ball games or their other activities. She did not want to miss a minute of their life. Cindy fought with remarkable strength, courage and grace.”
new beginning. It is a very meaningful, an accomplishment, and a way of saying ‘I made it!’ I looked around and there were about 30 coworkers there to cheer me on as I rang that bell!” She was ready for a new adventure and accepted a job in California, but it wasn’t meant to be. “I went for my routine follow up
Also, her boyfriend Todd was with her throughout her cancer journey. “He proposed to me in December of 2010, and we married on Valentine’s Day in 2011,” she beams. “He is one of the greatest gifts I have ever been given.” Now, as she celebrates her milestone of five years as a cancer survivor, she reminds us all – Don’t sweat the small stuff because every day is special. She also supports
It was her sister’s battle that made Smith’s family realize the importance of having a mammogram. “It was very hard for my mom, my sister Pam, my daughter Kim and me to go for our mammograms,” she recalls. “We would support each other and sometimes go together. We were always a close family, but this journey drew us even closer.” So, Smith began her own journey battling breast cancer. “My lumpectomies were scheduled, talks of treatments, chance of survival, what to expect, what is the right treatment choice? It was all a blur. Could this really be happening?” she wondered. “I continued to pray and believe I could beat this.” It was a challenge. After surgery, her radiation treatments were difficult and made her extremely tired. Fortunately, she had a great support system. “When I had no strength, my family and friends supported me with theirs. There was always someone willing to help, so many offers of food, help with housework and grocery shopping,” Smith remembers. “When my treatment was complete, I was so proud to ring the bell on the last day of radiation! The ringing of the bell is significant because it is the end of one chapter of my life and a

mammogram but I could tell that something was not right. There were a lot of worried looks. I was terrified!” Smith explains. “My mammogram showed another spot. It seemed unbelievable. The spot was right between the two spots we had just destroyed. I had been through radiation but the cancer had survived! My move to California was put on hold and my family and I dug our heels in deeper, this time for extensive surgical treatment. I wanted the cancer risk gone!”
her sister Pam who also was diagnosed with breast cancer but is doing well. When asked what she would tell other cancer patients after her ordeal she says, “I know God answers prayers. I learned strength comes from within and when your strength is gone borrow it from others who love you. Positive thinking is survival.” And, of course, her most important advice is to get a mammogram. It could save your life! www.charlestonwomanonline.com

Don’t Miss Out on LIFE any Longer
A
fternoon bike rides with significant others, going out to a movie, taking your children to the park, traveling, taking a vacation; these are all activities that everyone looks forward to and enjoys. That is, if you are not keenly aware of the fact that there are no easily accessible restrooms in these areas and are fearful of having accidental bowel leakage while out. Today, one in every five women in the United States suffers from some level of fecal incontinence or accidental bowel leakage. Renee, a 47 year old mother of three, recounts how she always sat in an aisle seat at her son’s performances or the movies for fear that she would not make it to the bathroom in time if she sat in the middle. The fear was so great that if there were no aisle seats available, she would simply leave and return home. Curt, a 35 year old married man, refused to go out to eat or go on trips for fear that he would have an accident. MJ, a 51 year old teacher and mother of two daughters, stated “everything I was involved in suffered because of accidental bowel leakage.” She missed days from work and was unable to go on mission trips with her husband and daughter. These individuals were hopeless and doubtful that they would ever find someone to help them with this condition. In fact, society makes us believe that accidental bowel leakage is just “part of the aging process.” Thankfully, this could not be farther from the truth. Dr. Margarita Murphy offers an innovative, minimally invasive new treatment option for those suffering from accidental bowel leakage. It is known as Interstim Neurostimulation, which is a tiny device inserted under the skin in
the upper buttocks that stimulate the nerves that control the bowel, rectum, and bladder. Dr. Murphy is second in the nation for the most patients treated with Interstim and is also one of the very few instructors of Interstim therapy at national and international levels. Since seeing Dr. Murphy and having the Interstim procedure,
life before Interstim therapy versus his life now is a “night and day difference.” He went from having daily accidents that required him to change clothes to having 4-5 minor accidents in six months. “It is life-changing,” he adds. Dr. Murphy is excited about the remarkable results she has witnessed with this therapy. “Interstim has completely changed my
practice. The past two years have been the most satisfying in my career. I have been able to change people’s lives in such a radical way with this quick, minimally invasive procedure.” Her office is located in Mount Pleasant and there is no referral needed to become a patient. We would love to speak with you. Call our office at 843-853-7730.

MJ has gone from having 20-30 bowel movements a day with several accidents to 2-3 bowel movements a day with rarely any accidents. She says “it was an instant change, unbelievable! Through years of prayer, God led me to Dr. Murphy.” Renee is now able to watch her son’s performances from the middle row without worrying about having an accident. What kind of Sandwich are You?
A
re you still raising your family and now your parents need help? You’re part of the Sandwich generation - a generation of people who care for their aging parents while supporting their own children. According to the Pew Research Center, about 1 of every 7 middle aged Americans is both raising a child and caring for a parent. An AARP analysis of U.S. Census data shows a 25 percent increase in the number of living arrangements with multiple generations under one roof. Boomers, those born between 1946-1964, are increasingly a part of the sandwich generation. But as a member of the sandwich generation – is everyone the same type of sandwich? Elder Care Authority Carol Abaya, M.A. categorized the different types of Boomer Sandwiches: 1. Traditional: those sandwiched between aging parents who need care and/or help and their own children. 2. Club Sandwich: a particularly complicated and layered sandwich as it is those in their 50’s or 60’s sandwiched between aging parents, adult children and grandchildren. It can also be those in their 30s and 40s, with young children, aging parents and grandparents. 3. Open Faced: anyone else involved in elder care. AllCare Living Services can help the members of the sandwich generation – any type of sandwich – for “All Stages, All Ages.” Since 1998, Kelly Williams, Owner of AllCare Living Services and her team have provided “Certified In-Home Care with A Heart.” The “Traditional Sandwich Boomer,” cares for aging parents while still helping their own children, perhaps getting their children through college or established financially. AllCare Living Services can provide additional support to the aging parent throughout the day - providing personal care assistance, medication monitoring, meal planning, even transportation for errands, thus enabling the “Traditional Sandwich Boomer” to continue their career, meeting financial obligations while caring for their families.
Sandwich Boomer” can go to a movie, dinner or even take a vacation. Whatever the need, AllCare will develop a plan to meet it. Boomers who are an “Open Faced Sandwich” generation are “empty nesters” with children grown and living on their own. Yet, their elderly parents need help with activities of daily living so they can remain in their residence of choice. They need help reviewing their medications to avoid confusion and possibly over-medicating themselves. AllCare Living Services’ Medication Management system includes weekly set up and review by a licensed nurse. Sometimes, these elderly family members are capable of taking care of their daily needs, but need help with transportation to a medical procedure that may require mild sedation. AllCare Living Services provides a Concierge Service with a Certified Caregiver that includes transportation to and from a hospital or doctor’s office, waiting during the procedure, and following the procedure, stopping for medications or supplies. Once home, the Certified Caregiver makes sure the client is settled in, giving the Boomer peace of mind that their loved one is cared for in a safe and professional manner.
Regardless of the type of sandwich, Boomers face the ever-increasing epidemic of having a loved one with dementia or Alzheimer’s. AllCare Living Services has dementia and Alzheimer’s specialists who are Certified in the care of those with this special type of challenge. AllCare Living Services also offers FREE Dementia Dialogue courses throughout the tri-county area to help those who are caring for a loved one that has dementia or Alzheimer’s. AllCare Living Services caregivers are Certified and regulated through Medicaid and each Certified Caregiver is fully insured, bonded and covered by workers’ compensation. Since 1998, family-owned and operated, AllCare Living Services has been providing “Certified In-Home Care with a Heart” in the Lowcountry and surrounding areas. They are also a presenting sponsor for the newly launched radio program, “Let’s Talk Boomers,” on NewsTalk Radio 94.3 WSC every Saturday at 11AM. What Is Lipo-Light Treatment?
E
veryone knows how to lose weight. You eat healthy foods. You don't eat unhealthy foods. You eat less than you feel like eating. And you spend a chunk of time each day exercising.
The problem comes when dieters realize that exercising enough to lose weight means a couple of hours out of their day. Eating healthy means more trips to the grocery store and more time in the kitchen. Not eating unhealthy foods means no quick and easy drive-thru meals when time is short. And before too long, most dieters realize that to lose weight they have to dedicate ALL their time and energy to the cause. So what happens when you already have a life filled with demands and expectations and not
a lot of time left over to dedicate to dieting? No weight loss. That's what happens! It is a frustrating cycle that many find themselves stuck in over and over throughout their lives; trying unsuccessfully to lose 10, 20, 30 or more pounds. Some of our most effective weight loss tools include: hCG weight loss program: This program utilizes pure pharmaceutical hCG to help the body to metabolize fat and use it as energy. Using this prescribed hCG
formula along with a strict low calorie diet is a safe, effective way for both men and women to lose weight. Lipo-Light Treatment: Our Lipo-Light comes from the UK. They have had this cutting-edge technology for quite some time and we are just now getting it here in the USA! Do you know that light is measured in wavelength and frequency? Lipo-Light has developed a wavelength that ONLY affects fat cells. Our 16 paddle machine is the MOST powerful in the
industry to super-energize each fat cell so that a ‘temporary’ pore opening forms in each cell. The jelly-like contents then spill out into the interstitial tissue to be carried to the lymph system to be used for energy before leaving the body! Basically, it takes a fat cell from being the size of a grape and makes it into a raisin!! Our Lipo-Light is very effective and one of the safest machines out there, giving consistently clinical superior results much faster . We are an integrated WELLNESS clinic, which helps people in the community achieve weight loss and improve their overall health. We strive to address patients’ health concerns as a WHOLE. This is because people concerned about their weight usually have other health problems related to their unhealthy weight gain. These problems CANNOT be ignored. What sets us apart is that our patients are given the option to be taken care of by our team of doctors, rehab staff, and massage therapists according to their PERSONALIZED, PRESCRIBED MEDICAL TREATMENT, which can help you become a healthier, happier person. The Right CARE, Right at Home By: Patti McGrath
W
hen Right at Home opened two years ago to serve Charleston and the Lowcountry, there was only one goal in mind – to improve the quality of life for the elderly. Today, you will find they are meeting that goal on a daily basis. “I am very passionate about making sure seniors get the care they deserve,” explains Ms. Kirke Gordon, Vice President of Business Development. “I hate to see seniors brushed aside because of their age. I cherish their age. I love to hear all of their stories. They are so interesting and have the insight that only age brings. I want to make sure they are well taken care of in their own homes and/or facilities.” “It concerns me to see healthcare workers discount seniors,” she continues. “Our caregivers are loving, giving and patient. Also, I do all the admissions and I want to set up the best care for your family.” Ms. Gordon RN, BSN, CCM, joined the team at Right at Home this summer, and has been a nurse for 25 years. In 2012, she became a Certified Geriatric Care Manager after working the past
seven years with seniors in their homes. To date, Ms. Gordon has managed the care of over 1100 seniors in the tri-county area. She is a partner with Matthew Minotti, MBA and a Certified Senior Advisor, who has been owner for the past two years. “We serve seniors in their places of residence, providing RN managed non-medical home care. The services we offer allow our clients to maintain an active, independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home,” she says. “We offer many services like companionship, light housekeeping, medication management and reminders, meal planning and preparation, and transportation to doctor appointments, errands and outings. Right at Home also offers Alzheimer's and dementia care with trained companions.” But, it’s the customer service that makes Right at Home special.
“We have a professional team that really cares for our clients. They will go out of their way to get them what they need when they need it,” Ms. Gordon states. “For example, one of our caregivers learned how to make a special dish that our client likes for breakfast and makes it just the way she wants it each day.” It’s the small things that sometimes matter the most. “I have always enjoyed senior citizens. My grandparents were very important to me and they were interesting, competent people. They helped me form my opinion of seniors,” Ms. Gordon says. “My grandmother lived to 95 and my grandfather to 100. I have always loved history and seniors are a living history book.” Perhaps this is why Ms. Gordon has such a passion for working with seniors. She wants to ensure they obtain the care and services
that they need to stay safely and securely in their own homes. She is currently a member of the Lowcountry Senior Network, The SC Aging in Place Coalition, The Mount Pleasant Business Association, and a State Policy Liaison for the National Patient Advocate Foundation. “I want to be an advocate for the seniors I come in contact with, arming them and their families with important information. The families know they can call me if they need anything and are unable to locate resources,” she states. “All of us at Right at Home want to give our clients the quality of life they deserve.” If you or a family member is in need of elder care, please call Right at Home at (843) 580-5120 or visit their website at www. rahcharleston.com for more information.

High-caliber breast reconstruction options available CLOSE TO HOME
T
he mass in Lana Reilly’s breast appeared to be benign, but when the lump was removed and examined in June 2013, the pathologist found cancer.
“There was only .7 centimeter in that whole lump, but you hear the ‘C’ word and you kind of lose it,” recalls Reilly, 47, who lives in North Charleston with her husband and two children.
I felt very at ease with Dr. Schimpf and very confident in his wisdom and his knowledge of what he does
Further testing results showed the cancer was aggressive and suggested she had a 1 in 4 chance of breast cancer re-occurring. As a result of that and a suspicious spot on her other breast, Reilly decided with her husband to have both of her breasts removed. “I would rather have my life than have boobs.” Yet once her trusted brotherin-law, respected surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Lafond, performed the double mastectomy at Trident Medical Center (TMC) in September 2013, she moved immediately forward with breast reconstruction with expert Dr. Dennis Schimpf of Sweetgrass Plastic Surgery in Summerville. Dr. Schimpf previously founded and directed the Advanced Breast Reconstruction Program at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and at the time of Reilly’s surgery was starting both his private practice and an advanced breast reconstruction program with Trident Health. The new program provides reconstructive surgeries at TMC as well as Summerville Medical Center (SMC), its main base. As a result, cancer survivors here have close access to high-caliber care with a full range of reconstruction options not readily available to women in many other communities.
nection with the surgeons as well as someone at the office they can really get to know. That can offer a lot of comfort and stability.”
“I felt very at ease with Dr. Schimpf and very confident in his wisdom and his knowledge of what he does,” says Reilly. She also had high praise for office manager Vicky Tolbert, who guided her through the process and always boosted her spirits. “She is fantastic.” Dr. Schimpf often does natural reconstruction by taking a flap of skin and fat tissue from the patient’s midsection and transplanting the tissue to the breast area. But Reilly did not have enough abdominal tissue available for her planned reconstruction, so she opted instead for implants. At the time of her mastectomy, Dr. Schimpf initiated the process
by placing expanders at the site. Once the skin was stretched far enough, he added the implants in December. While each woman’s circumstances are unique, breast reconstruction is almost always a multi-step process. Depending on the patient’s need for radiation treatments and chemotherapy, it may take anywhere from 3-18 months before the process is complete. “Breast cancer is an emotionally charged diagnosis and disease process,” says Dr. Schimpf. “It not only affects the patient, but also the patient’s family. It’s very important for them to have a con-
For Reilly, the last step was restoring the natural appearance of the areola. To provide the best look possible, Dr. Schimpf arranges for his patients to see 3-D medical tattoo artist Renee Maschinot, who travels here from Florida. “It really increases levels of patient satisfaction,” he says. “At first I was like, I don’t need that. No one is going to see them besides my husband,” recalls Reilly. But now she’s glad she changed her mind and is pleased with the results of Maschinot’s “phenomenal” work. “It looks like I have boobs now.” Dr. Thomas Hahm also performs breast reconstruction surgery at Summerville Medical Center. She has a Dream... By: Carol Ryall
D
r. Carolyn Hunter, owner of Charleston Spine Center, was working as a dental hygienist when she injured her arm and was subsequently out of work for over a year. She tried every type of medical treatment or therapy she could find, with very little improvement. Finally, at the repeated urging of a friend, she went to see a Chiropractor. Almost immediately there was relief and within three sessions of treatment there was substantial improvement in her range of motion and ability to use her arm. Having seen firsthand how beneficial this treatment could be, she wanted to be a part of this type of healing and decided to go back to school and become a Doctor of Chiropractic herself. (She did this, in spite of having a child in kindergarten and another in first grade when she started school!)
In 1996 she began her graduate studies at Life University in Atlanta, Ga graduating magna cum laude as a Doctor of Chiropractic in 2000. Upon graduation, Dr. Hunter first practiced in Europe, both in Italy and the UK, where she had the opportunity to practice in both hospital based and private practice settings. She began extensive training in Chiropractic Neurology in London with the Carrick Institute and is currently working toward Board Certification in this Specialty. Dr. Hunter relocated to South Carolina with her family in 2005 and has been practicing in the Charleston area ever since. Her focus has always been to optimize human performance and wellness by helping her patients achieve their personal best. To achieve those goals, she has dreamed of forming an integrative, holistic practice, including both traditional and alternative forms of medicine. To make that dream a reality, there are exciting transformations happening right now. To better reflect the unique, holistic approach to treating patients practiced by this group, Charleston Spine Center is changing their name to Health Edge Group. The second, most transforming change is the addition of two new staff members; Dr. Athena Beldecos, an MD specializing in Internal Medicine, and Nurse Practitioner Teresa Privett. With their involvement, a much wider range of treatment modalities will be available to the patients of Health Edge Group. In addition, Dr. Sean Bitner is the newest Chiropractor joining the practice. Both to accommodate the new staff and to broaden the outreach of their practice to more
people, they are also opening a new office at 3730 Betsy Kerrigan Parkway, John’s Island. They will maintain their original office to administer the full range of services at 2102 Otranto Blvd., North Charleston, near Trident Hospital in North Charleston. In addition to Dr. Hunter and Dr. Bitner, Dr. Shane Dreher, who has been with the office for over two years, is also available to treat your chiropractic needs. While chiropractic adjustments have formed the foundation of their services, Health Edge Group also offers several other complementary therapies, including spinal decompression therapy, corrective exercises, lifestyle counseling, Near Laser Assisted Lipolysis Fat Reduction Treatment (which reduces Inches instead of Pounds,) nutritional counseling, massage therapy, and spinal/ postural screenings. Back Pain, Neck Pain, Headaches and Migraines, Leg Pain, Peripheral Neuropathy (Numbness and Tingling), Joint Pain and Arthritis, Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia, Weight Loss, and Sciatica are all conditions which can be treated successfully in a natural and non-invasive way by Health Edge Group. This multi-faceted practice creates a personalized treatment plan for each patient, selecting from the various therapies at their disposal, to best match each individual’s specific needs and symptoms. Spinal Decompression, or IDD therapy, is a highly effective alternative to medication for pain management. Dr. Hunter is nationally certified in Non–Surgical Spinal Decompression and Health Edge Group is
Dr. Carolyn Hunter one of the few practices in the Charleston area to offer the related therapy. If you have back pain which has lasted six months or longer, you may be a good candidate for spinal decompression therapy. Most patients find these treatments to be relaxing and comfortable. The sessions usually last between 15 and 30 minutes, with the majority of patients benefiting from a series of treatment sessions over four to six weeks. These treatments are a much less invasive, much less expensive, much less painful and debilitating alternative to back surgery. In the McClure study, which involved over 500 pre-surgical candidates, (who were able to avoid surgery) Spinal Decompression was shown to be 91% effective. Health Edge Group is committed to making their care affordable for you and your family. They have created a pricing structure which is flexible enough to allow you to get the care you need, no matter what your budget. They accept auto accident, workers compensation, and personal injury cases. These have resulted in back pain, neck pain, headaches, or other related pain conditions. They also accept most health insurance plans, including Medicare, and offer flexible payment programs for patients who have little or no insurance coverage. The cutting-edge technologies and unique approach of this exceptional practice make Health Edge Group one of the Low Country’s finest medical resources. Personal Note
I
n the spirit of thanksgiving I wanted to share a few things on my heart with you today. I am so thankful for so many things in my life. I am thankful for salvation. I believe I am saved by the grace of God and the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. I am thankful for my husband. Neither of us are perfect, don’t get me wrong, but he is perfect for me. I love him beyond what I thought I knew about love at age 21 when I married him and so much more since he has become the spiritual leader of our home. He is smart and brave. He has shown his love to me in so many ways over the last twenty years. I am a blessed woman. I am thankful for the gift of our children. Each of them mean so much to me. As a mother they have taught me things I never even knew I needed to learn. Recently I was leaving a football game at Furman and I had stopped at the dorm to give Trey some things he had asked for, and some things I just wanted him to have, and he hugged me goodbye. He stood with a friend for a moment and then he nudged her, “That’s my MVP,” he said. There I was, a few months ago, telling you all how I worried about him. Here he was affirming his affection for me with three little words. I wouldn’t take a million dollars for that one moment. I am thankful for that moment. I am thankful for my mother. She has taught me about enduring and forgiveness. Things that no other person could have taught me the way she has. She taught me what it meant to make a commitment and stick to it (even if sticking to it was the last thing you wanted to do.) I am thankful for my dad. I am thankful that I miss him. The ache inside me is proof of what he meant to me. Some people have fathers pass and they don’t even really know they are gone. I am grateful my father was a missable father. I am thankful for my siblings; all of them, especially the younger ones. Besides, siblings are the only people who know how crazy your parents really were when you were growing up and definitely the only people you can talk to about it. I am thankful for all the incredible women and men who let me tell their stories. Thank you for allowing the story of your strength , your courage, your ability to overcome, help someone else with what they are going through. Someone asked me once what I would write about when there were no stories left to tell in Lexington. That’s silly. As long as there are people there will be stories. I hope this holiday season is the best yet for all of us. Be good to each other. Smile more. I asked Ryan once, “Ryan, do you know how much I love you?” “Yes,” He said very matter of fact. “How do you know?” I asked, impressed with his confidence. “Because you smile every time you see me.” Out of the mouths of babes. Show someone you love them, Smile. Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
See you in January,
Lori Samples Duncan
