t’s football time. South Carolina is abuzz about what this year will bring for us to celebrate. Whether you are a Carolina, Clemson, Citadel or any other fan there seems a lot to be excited about this year.
This issue is our Pink issue; not just because of Breast Cancer awareness happens in October. We at CWM feel that Cancer happens 365 days a year so we tell the stories all year long of real men and women who have survived many types of cancer. May we all continue to raise the banner and fight against Breast, Ovarian, Childhood Cancers, Kidney, Prostate, Cervical, Bone, Blood Cancers and every other type of cancer that would steal life and joy from us and our loved ones. We hope you enjoy the story about local survivor Mamie Frayer and how she continues to let her light shine in the Greater Charleston area. She is hosting a womens’ event in Orangeburg this fall. We would love to see you all there. It’s great to be a woman in this wonderful world and time we live in. There are so many opportunities afforded to us and our daughters that our mothers and grandmothers would have never dreamed of. We want to celebrate the spirit of those opportunities and share our interview with Senator Katrina Shealy. Who Senator Shealy literally walked door to door to attain enough petition signatures to run against her incumbent opponent. Even though there is evil in the world (as 9/11 always reminds us at this time of year), there are also many good things to celebrate as well. We strive to always tell you the “good stuff” about our friends and neighbors who are making a difference and impacting lives. Make a decision today to do something kind for someone, even if it’s just to offer a smile to a stranger. You may never know the positive impact one tiny inexpensive gift or friendly gesture could make in the life of another person. A special thanks to all of the women featured in this issue for rearranging your schedules for photo shoots and interviews. We hope you will tell all these ladies you saw them in Charleston Woman Magazine and patronize their businesses. Each of these businesses has made a commitment to bring you quality services and products as well as support the local community. Get your pink on Charleston and Celebrate all that is girly and fun in our great big wonderful lives! Let the games begin!

SHRIMP & Lobster Ceviche Melissa Hass
I love Fall …almost as much as I love food! Well, maybe not quite that much. We pack away the heavy, hearty dishes of winter and fall and trade them in for the fun and light plates of summer, fresh off a sizzling grill! Summer brings some spectacular foods to the table. Who doesn’t love all of the color and variety of homegrown nutritious vegetables, juicy fruit cobblers and LOTS of fresh fish and seafood? Let’s boot the bland and season it up! The recipe I’m sharing with you is guaranteed to be versatile, fabulous and full of flavor but most importantly… easy like summertime!
Ingredients • 1 lb. large white shrimp, cleaned • 4 oz. Maine Lobster meat, chopped • ½ cup avocado, cubed • ¼ C radish, shredded • 2 T Scallion, cut into fine rings • ¼ C Fennel, diced • ¼ C Red Bell pepper, diced • 2 Serrano peppers, diced • 3 T Cilantro • ½ C Fresh lime juice • Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste Heat shrimp on the grill for approximately a minute to a minute and a half. Do not completely cook the shrimp. You still want them to be a faint pinkish opaque in color. After shrimp have cooled, cut into bite sized pieces and place along with the remaining ingredients (minus avocado) in a large mixing bowl. Mix well to combine. Allow mixture to marinate for at least 30 minutes to allow the acid of the lime juice to complete the “cooking” process. When done, the shrimp will have turned pink in color. Drain the liquid to stop the cooking process and add salt and pepper. Serve with fresh pita chips or wedges, or pretzel chips and top with the reserved avocado cubes, lime wedges, and a squeeze of lime. 4

Paloosh Salon A By: Patti McGrath Photography by Tammy Bevins
“
s a child, I would always try to give my baby dolls a makeover and play with friend’s hair,” says Holly Powell, owner of the Paloosh Salon. This may have been a telling indicator of what her future would be. Paloosh Salon, located at 2408 Ashley River Rd Suite H in Charleston, offers a comfortable, intimate salon experience with personal attention for its clients. Their professional and talented team is committed to providing excellent customer service. And, for Powell, making all her clients feel welcome and taken care of is her top priority. “This is my first business and I want to make it the best it can be. I want people to feel loved and cared about when they come in and feel relaxed, not rushed, when they leave,” she says. When choosing her career, Powell initially had other plans. “I was always drawing and painting so I studied commercial graphics. Then, with one semester left, I knew it wasn’t for me,” she explains. “I did freelance painting for a gallery for several years when my children where

very young but always loved the beauty industry and with creativity flowing through my hands I decided to go to beauty school.” It was a decision that would change her life. Educated in one of Charleston’s premiere cosmetology schools, Powell has worked and studied under nationally recognized industry icons. Thanks to her artistic nature and talent, her clients have become her works of art. And, although Powell has been in the beauty industry for 17 years, she knows to bring her clients the most cutting edge, up-to-date trends, she will always be a student. In fact, all of the Paloosh team is continuously educated. Originally from New York State, Powell came to Charleston with her family while still in high school. When she was 19 years old her father’s job transferred

the family from the area, but she decided to stay. “Even though at times we are very spread out all over the states we’re a close family,” she says. After working in other salons, Powell decided she wanted to open her own salon in Charleston. “I wanted to open a business where I could create an atmosphere where employees could feel loved, and cared about,” she explains. “I wanted a salon where employees felt good about coming to work every day.” In addition to making both her employees and clients know they were cared about, she wanted to make sure the Salon offered the best services and quality products. Paloosh offers many services including hair services, Xteme lashes, hair extensions, airbrush tanning, Brazilian blowouts, and keratin smoothing.
As much as Powell loves her business, she the support she has received from her family has made all the difference. “What makes the successful in life is my husband. He has supported me with every idea that has popped in my head,” she states. “Also, my daughter Chelsea works at the Salon with me. Just knowing my family and employees are happy makes me feel successful.” Her advice to women wanting to open a business is to care about others, be present and surround yourself with good people. “Paloosh isn’t about me,” Powell says. “It is about the people that work here and as long as they are happy and love to come to work every day it makes Paloosh a creative and artistic success.”

DEBBIE MILER By: Patti McGrath Photos by Tammy Bevins Photography

ebbie Miler’s first love was fashion design. When she graduated as valedictorian of her class from the Art and Fashion Institute in Atlanta, she had planned to open her own boutique. But, fate intervened, and she fell in love with the real estate business. Today, Miler and her husband Dickie run the largest residential property management company in the Charleston area. “I began my real estate career almost 35 years ago as an administrative assistant to the owners of the EAK Gallery of Homes real estate company,” Miler remembers. “They were amazing owners with dynamic agents, and it was great to work with them. While working for them, I saw how passion and integrity go hand-in-hand while building a career. I loved the business, and knew that I wanted to open my own company.”
Miler Properties, Inc. opened its doors in 1986. The company Miler was working with at the time had merged with Merrill Lynch, but the company had no focus on having a property management department. This prompted Miler and her husband to purchase the business.
Working in real estate has become a family affair in the Miler household. “I have been particularly blessed to be able to work with my husband and two of my daughters. Adriane is a property manager and Jennifer, Celebrating, Motivating and Educating

I truly love my work. I like to see it more as a housing ministry.
Since opening the company, Miler has been busy trying to balance a full work schedule, family time, and community involvement. “It’s not always easy,” Miler admits. “Being a business owner means many nights and weekends are spent making endless decisions. For me, the secret of our success has been hiring great people who love their work. Our employees are like family members, and require little oversight. They are wonderful to work with and make my job much easier!”
Her work at EAK Gallery of Homes not only affected her professional life but her personal life. One of the owners, Sherwood Miler, would later become her father-in-law. “My husband and I have been married for thirty years. We have four beautiful daughters and two fabulous sonin-laws,” she says proudly of her family.

my personal relationship with my Lord, quality time with my husband and family, and knowing when I have to say no to some of the many requests that come across my desk,” she continues. “I truly love my work. I like to see it more as a housing ministry.” Miler’s advice to those who dream of becoming a business owner is simple. “Love your work with passion, hire the best people you can, be totally honest with everyone, and be willing to work harder than everyone else,” she advises. How does Miler want to be remembered, not only in her business dealings but in her life? “I would hope that my legacy would be favorable, and one that reflected any glory and accomplishments to the Lord,” she states. “I’d like others to see me as a good steward who faithfully did her work with honesty and integrity, treated all she met and served with care and passion, and gave back with a humble

MEET David L. Hoffman, Jr.
Patti McGrath
I
f you ever meet David Hoffman, Jr. you will quickly discover two things about him: he loves the law and the city of Charleston. His love for Charleston began at a young age. “I was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina but I moved to Charleston when I was very young. I went to first grade at Orange Grove Elementary and have been in Charleston ever since,” Hoffman says. “I attended Wando High School after which I graduated magna cum laude from The Citadel.” He left Charleston briefly to attend the University of Florida, College of Law, where he graduated with honors. “Charleston is probably in my top three places that I would ever really want to visit so I am very lucky to call it home. It is an amazing city and I am very fortunate to practice law here. Sometimes when I just need a break, I will rent a hotel room downtown and hang out. Charleston is the kind of place of which I could never tire,” Hoffman continues. “When I was in law school I would frequently bring friends back to Charleston and play tour guide, driving them all over the city showing them the historic sites. To this day I will still throw on a pair of sneakers and go walking through the downtown area. My favorite part of Charleston is probably the French Quarter area, near Broad Street. I really enjoy the houses and the architecture down there.” Hoffman first became interested
in law while at Wando High School. “I was always fascinated with the law and how it came about in civilized society,” he states. “It is also interesting to note how it has evolved over the centuries. Certainly the idea of being able to help people in need by utilizing a particular set of skills in which I have been trained is appealing to me. Practicing law allows me to do this.” His interest in the law may have also been influenced by his family. “I actually had an uncle who was the dean of Duke Law School and some other uncles who practiced law. That was probably how I first became interested in becoming a lawyer myself,” Hoffman says. Hoffman has practiced personal injury law not only in Charleston but all across the state for many
years. “Personal Injury Law was never really something I sought to do; it pretty much found me. It was by happenstance that I took a job early in my career helping people who had been injured get the benefits they deserved,” he explains. “I have never been one of those cliché type personal injury lawyers. I have gone to great lengths with my advertising and personal demeanor to never be seen as an ‘ambulance chaser.’ To me it is far more rewarding helping people who clearly would become financially destitute because of the actions of an insurance company.” When it comes to how he practices law Hoffman wants people to know integrity and honesty are very important to him. “I would say the most important thing I can carry through my career is integrity,” Hoffman states. “The one thing no one could ever accuse me of is being even remotely dishonest. I go to great lengths to always do the right thing in every situation.”

Hoffman is a fortunate man with both a wonderful family and career that keeps him busy. “I am married to a beautiful, intelligent woman and
!
we are blessed with two amazing children.” But what’s more important to him than legacy, recognition, and even success, is the number of peoples’ lives he can directly impact through philanthropic efforts in the community; a community that has given him so much. It’s this passion to help a community he so loves that has been the catalyst for his involvement with Camp Happy Days, Darkness to Light, Crisis Ministries, Lowcountry Childrens’ Center, Abby’s Friends, and the South Carolina Aquarium. When asked how he defines himself, Hoffman pauses for a moment and responds, “I’m a father, husband, philanthropist, entrepreneur, lawyer, and a Charlestonian. I was very fortunate to have found a career I love so it never really feels like work. But upon reflection, I had to work tirelessly to get to this point and it was not without challenges. I had the support of my wife and friends and their support gave me the edge to overcome adversity. So I guess the lesson is no person is entirely self-made. It is that revelation that has driven me to be heavily involved in philanthropy and to give others that bump or spark I was lucky enough to receive.”

WLGOS offers a structured, residential, military-style environment that emphasizes an academic and life skills education. It is through this training the school leads each student to a new beginning. What is an ‘Opportunity School’ you may wonder. “Since inception, the WLGOS has specialized in helping at-risk young people move past life’s obstacles to achieve success,” states Pat Smith, the Director at the school. “The school provides students with a technologically advanced, state-of-the-art classroom environment designed to encourage learning and the application of new skills. Our daily goal is to engage student’s minds, develop their personal character and build relationships with our students.” The WLGOS is an agency of state government that is funded by the legislature. This allows the school to provide an education that is tuition free with the exception of a nominal $200 fee to cover student incidentals. ree Girl” Jessica Pares is a woman on the go. As owner and principal arborist for New Leaf Tree Service, she is taking the tree care industry by storm. “There aren’t many women in this business,” says Pares. “It’s a very male dominated field. I went to a hazardous tree workshop this past spring and was the only girl in a class with 20 guys!” Pares explains that this is the very reason that her company is better than all the others. As a woman her attention to detail and eye for balance and form makes her company’s pruning work superior to the others and her cleanup is meticulous. “I make sure every job site looks like my own yard when we’re finished.” Most of her competitors are men with little training or education about trees. Pares explains that improper pruning techniques can have devastating effects on trees both aesthetically and health wise so it is crucial to the environment that customers educate themselves and only hire a Certified Arborist when doing annual tree trimming. “Removing too much of a tree’s canopy at one time or cutting a branch in the wrong place could ultimately kill a tree or tree part. Trees provide so many benefits to us. They oxygenate the air we breathe, create shade from the sun, provide homes for wildlife and yield many other benefits. We owe it to them to care for

them properly.” Pares boasts a Master’s degree from the Citadel and her arborist certification from the International Society of Arboriculture. She is one of only two female Certified Arborists in the Charleston area and the only commercial arborist with the prestigious Tree Risk Assessment Qualification. This means that she is basically The Guru on hazardous trees and tree parts, a helpful tool in our hurricane prone area. Pares has been in the tree business for over 15 years and has learned to balance her work and family life. “Being self employed has it’s benefits and it’s draw-

backs,” says Pares. She loves the flexibility that owning her own business affords. She can drive her children to school and pick them up each day because she makes her own schedule. She gets to attend all of their activities and chaperone field trips but that means that she often has to work until late at night doing paperwork, returning emails and attending to the day to day activities of a thriving business. “People ask if I like being my own boss and my answer is usually this: ‘In the service business, your customers are your bosses so really I’m not my own boss and if I’m lucky and do good work, I’ll always have an endless supply of bosses.’”

Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera By: Patti McGrath
T
he Columbia Museum of Art announces a landmark exhibition of the most famous and beloved of American illustrators, Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera, on view from October 17, 2014,
through January 8, 2015. This is the first exhibition to explore in-depth Rockwell's richly detailed study photographs, created by the artist as references for his iconic paintings. Rockwell is known for his depictions of everyday life created with humor, skill, and emotion. However, it is little known that he staged photographs to make his popular covers of the Saturday Evening Post. Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera includes 50 photographs that show the careful procedure Rockwell used to make his art, as well as 16 original paintings and drawings, and takes viewers behind the scenes in the creative process of one of America's great masters. "We are excited to bring to Columbia and South Carolina this first-ever exhibition exploring Norman Rockwell's inventive use of photography to set the stage for his memorable works of art," says Karen Brosius, CMA executive director. "In his artistic approach, Rockwell became known as the 'Kid with the Camera Eye' for his unerring talent and uncanny ability to capture such special moments. Behind the Camera uniquely presents the long-valued relationship between photography and painting while delighting viewers with the inherent charm, energy, and warmth of Rockwell's art."

Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera brings together prints of Rockwell's study photographs and original paintings and drawings from the permanent collection of the Norman Rockwell Museum linked to the photographs on display. The result is a fascinating frame-by-frame view of the development of some of Rockwell's most indelible images. At the same time, the photographs themselves--painstakingly staged by Rockwell and involving an array of models, costumes,
Rockwell. In Behind the Camera, we get to see just how hard he worked as he used photography to carefully stage every aspect of what would become a magazine illustration. Rockwell added and subtracted detail, moved objects around, and tweaked the expressions on the faces of his sitters until he got it right. Behind the Camera is a wonderful behindthe-scenes look into the working method of an artist who created many of our most memorable pictures of American life."

The CMA is the last venue in the national tour of the exhibition. It is a last chance to see the selection of photographs, paintings, and the creative process of an American master. "Norman Rockwell was a natural storyteller with an unerring eye for detail," says Stephanie Haboush Plunkett, deputy director and chief curator of the Norman Rockwell Museum. "This ground-breaking exhibition shows how that narrative instinct found its first expression in the artist's meticulously composed photographs." Accompanying the exhibition is a beautiful, fully illustrated hardback catalogue entitled, Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera, written by Ron Schick with a foreword by Rockwell's son, John Rockwell (Little & Brown, 2009). Copies of the book will be available for purchase in the Museum Shop. This exhibition is presented through the generosity of SCE&G, South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, and Richland County.

here are some people who, when you first meet them, it feels like you have known them forever. Mamie Fryar is one such woman. Her smile was warm and open as she spoke candidly with me about her journey with Cancer. Her first diagnosis came when she was only thirty-three and, after a lumpectomy and radiation, she got back a clear report. Though it sounds simple for all that Mamie went through, that is exactly how she made it seem - as if Cancer was just a minor interruption in the flow of her life. Mamie remembers the day of her second diagnosis like it was yesterday. She was forty-seven and this time it seemed more serious. She had just come home from a tough day at work. She sat down and started to tell her husband about her day, when she felt a lump. It was in the same breast she had cancer in before. She immediately told her

husband, Kenneth, who reassured her that it was “…probably just scar tissue.” She had had a mammogram just three months prior with a clear result. However, she called her doctor, Dr. Montoya, who said, “Mamie, it probably is just scar tissue but with your history and your family history, let’s check it out.” Mamie had two aunts that lost their

battle to Cancer before they reached the age of fifty. Because the result of the second mammogram was unclear, she was sent for an ultrasound which revealed not one, but two masses. Ironically, this appointment was on Mamie’s birthday, May 18th. A biopsy was ordered
next. Mamie went to her biopsy appointment and then went on to work. Dr. Montoya called her at work with the results. Mamie knew when she heard her doctor’s voice, that the news was not good. She was right, but she didn’t fall apart or cry. She was alone in the break room when the call came in. After the call, Mamie says she remembers looking up and saying out loud, “God, you did it before, you can do it again.” She said that her faith helped her not to be fearful. Her questions were not, “Why me?” or “How did this happen to me?” but rather, “What is the plan?” and “When do we get started?” Mamie shared that the hardest thing about this cancer was telling her husband,Kenneth, the second time. In fact, she found it so difficult that she didn’t tell him. She just called him and said they needed to go to Summerville to the doctor’s office right then. He said, “OK,”, and was ready to go when Mamie arrived home. It was in Dr. Montoya’s office, while she was explaining to Mamie what the next steps were, that she realized Mamie’s husband didn’t know why they were there. It was actually Dr. Montoya who broke the news to him. When I asked Mamie why it was so hard for her to tell Kenneth, she said something that, in all the years I have been interviewing survivors, I had never heard articulated this way, “When you go through cancer, everyone who loves you goes through cancer, too.” Mamie had already accepted whatever outcome God had in store for her but, with a husband who had already been through this with her once before, and a mother who was caring for her sick husband, it was hard for Mamie to add another worry to her husband’s plate. This time it was determined Mamie would need a mastectomy. Mamie also had chemo with her second battle and said, “Yes, I knew I was bald headed and cute!” Mamie said when she found out she was going to lose
her breast, she was okay with that. “I chose to live,” she said. She also shared with me how she talked to her husband and told him, “I love you with all of my heart. If you can’t handle this, I won’t hold it against you. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. I am okay with it.” His response to her was, “Let’s do whatever we need to do to keep you here.” (Though I have never met Kenneth, I really like him.)
Celebrating the
Survivor in You!
Mamie’s oncologist is Dr. Douglas Michaelson at the Charleston Cancer Center, which Mamie says is “The BEST Place.” Mamie called Susan Appelbaum, RN, OCN, her angel. “She made it so easy to understand what was happening and to deal with (and be prepared for) the side effects of chemotherapy.” While Mamie does have some lingering effects of her chemo, she is survivin’ and thrivin’ by all accounts. I asked Mamie what she wanted our readers to know about her journey. “If you have strong faith, you can conquer anything. Fear cripples you. I did not want fear to cripple me, so I allowed no fear.” One of her favorite scriptures is “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” “I am a happy person; I like making others happy.”, she remarked. The other scriptures Mamie shared were along the same vein. “The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, And with my song I shall thank Him. Psalms 28:7” “No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; And every tongue that accuses you in judgment, you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their vindication is from Me," declares the LORD. Isaiah 54:17” and “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? Romans 8:31” Mamie said, “Don’t focus on yourself. You are just the vessel He is using. He has a purpose and a plan and your job is to stay in that plan.”
Out of Mamie’s experience she has created something called, “Especially for Women.” This is a women’s conference for all women. Not just women who have had cancer, but women who have gone through any battle. If they are struggling with self-esteem or if they have trouble making good choices for themselves or if they, too, have had a life threatening illness, this conference is for them. The next event is planned for October 4th at 10:00 am and will be held at The New Vision Center at 3699 Magnolia Street, Orangeburg, SC
29115. Mamie says you all are invited! Mamie Fryar is a woman who loves the Lord, her husband and her family. She is a woman who has found true joy. “Even in the midst of adversity and when people didn’t understand, I was so thankful just to see another day.” She celebrated her 50th birthday this year and I am sure with her attitude and faith she will celebrate every single day of her life!

weight loss
veryone knows how to lose weight. You eat healthy foods. You don't eat unhealthy foods. You eat less than you feel like eating, and you spend a chunk of time each day exercising. The problem comes
when dieters realize that exercising enough to lose weight means a couple of hours out of their day. Eating healthy means more trips to the grocery store and more time in the kitchen. Not eating unhealthy foods means no quick and easy drive-thru meals when time is short, and before too long, most dieters realize that to lose weight they have to dedicate ALL their time and energy to the cause.
So what happens when you already have a life filled with demands and expectations and not a lot of time left over to dedicate to dieting? No weight loss. That's what happens! It is a frustrating cycle that many find themselves stuck in over and over throughout their lives; trying unsuccessfully to lose 10, 20, 30 or more pounds. Some of our most effective weight loss tools include: hCG weight loss program: This program utilizes pure pharmaceutical hCG to help the body to metabolize fat and use it as energy. Using this prescribed hCG formula along with a strict low calorie diet is a safe, effective way for both men and women to lose weight. Lipo-Light Treatment: Our Lipo-Light comes from the UK. They have had this cutting-edge technology for quite some time but we are just now getting it here in the USA! Do you know that light is measured in wavelength and frequency? Lipo-Light has developed a wavelength that ONLY affects fat cells. Our 16 paddle machine is the MOST powerful in the industry to super energize each fat cell so that a ‘temporary’ pore opening forms
in each cell. The jelly-like contents then spill out into the interstitial tissue to be carried to the lymph system to be used for energy before leaving the body! Basically, it takes a fat cell from being the size of a grape and makes it into a raisin!! Our Lipo-Light is very effective and one of the safest machines out there, giving consistently clinical superior results much faster. We are an integrated WELLNESS clinic, which helps people in the community achieve weight loss and improve their overall health. We strive to address patients’ health concerns as a WHOLE. This is because people concerned about their weight usually have other health problems related to their unhealthy weight gain. These problems CANNOT be ignored. What sets us apart is that our patients are given the option to be taken care of by our team of doctors, rehab staff, and massage therapists according to their PERSONALIZED, PRESCRIBED MEDICAL TREATMENT, which can help you become a healthier, happier person.

Ruth Motley My name is Ruth Motley, I found information about Back2Health in a booklet one day when I was out to dinner. I called the number and I was accepted right away for an appointment. When I came in I was using a cane and sometimes a walker. After coming to Back2health five times I had to go away on a trip and I was able to go on an Amtrak train all the way up to Pensilvania without my cane, it was then that I new that Back2Health was the right place for me. Now I can do my shores at home and I am able to walk in supermarkets. My knees were very bad, but now I can even dance! I have told my relatives about this and they are very impressed, some even want to come to Back2Health to get treatment from out of state. I recommend the treatment to everyone! www.charlestonwomanonline.com

Dr. Beth Haffner With Lowcountry
Dentistry By: Patti McGrath
D
r. Beth Haffner knows the value of a great smile. “Changing someone’s smile for the better not only improves their health, but their self-esteem,” she says. This is just one of the reasons Haffner opened Low Country Dentistry in 2005. “It is a blessing to be able to work with a patient and help them restore their oral health, which in turn helps improve their overall well-being.” Haffner has a comprehensive dental practice that believes in building relationships. “We are about treating the whole patient with quality care and developing lifelong relationships,” she says. “Many of my patients have been with me since before I had my oldest son. It’s amazing how many patients enjoy sharing their lives with our team, even if we only get to see them twice a year for check-ups.” And, to Haffner, that’s what it’s all about. “In addition to caring for my patients, I have made the choice to slow down and spend some time getting to know them,” Haffner explains. “Patients that come to our practice are not just names on a daily schedule – they are part of our lives. Some professionals might say that my practice philosophy is not the most financially advantageous, but I find the development of an enduring doctor-patient relationship built on trust is priceless.” When Haffner was starting out, she didn’t know she would become a dentist. She graduated from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry, and decided to 22

stay in Charleston working at the VA hospital downtown doing research. After a year, she thought she would explore other opportunities. “I knew, even as a child, I wanted to help people so I considered teaching, medical school and dental school,” Haffner states. “After working in research I taught high school chemistry for a year while doing graduate work. As the daughter of a college math professor and state court judge, I knew teaching and public service were noble professions, but it became clear to me teaching was not my calling, and I certainly wasn’t a litigator! So, I chose to complete my DMD degree at the Medical College of Georgia (now known as Georgia Regents University).” Haffner says she chose dentistry over medicine because she knew it would provide her more flexibility as a wife and mother. “I met my husband Keith after graduating from college,” she says. “Keith was a Charleston native, so we chose to live in Summerville to be closer to his family and live in a smaller community. Little did we know how Summerville would grow!”
Women
“We have two incredible boys, ages 9 and 13,” she states proudly. “I absolutely love being a mom and consider it my true calling. But, balancing it all can be challenging. Fortunately, I have a dedicated husband who has a great deal of flexibility as a Realtor, so he is instrumental in raising our boys.” Owning her practice does offer the flexibility she wanted, but she knows there is a great deal of responsibility that comes with being the owner. So, to women who might be considering opening their own business, she offers the following advice: 1. Identify your goals first – both short and long term. 2. Surround yourself with good people you trust and who want to see you succeed, but who will be honest with you to help avoid early pitfalls that could derail your dream. You can’t put a price on wise counsel. 3. Tap into relationships that will allow you to remain focused on your goals. 4. Remember to dream big, work hard, and enjoy the journey.

MEET Dr. Tara Chellis

ecoming a chiropractor was a family affair for Dr. Tara Chellis. “My brother, who is a chiropractor in Atlanta, was my inspiration,” she says. “I had suffered for many years with migraines until he gave me my first adjustment. With that first adjustment I felt all the tension in my neck and shoulders subside.” That was the turning point for Dr. Chellis, who is now a chiropractor in Summerville. She attended the University of South Carolina for her undergraduate work then received her Doctorate of Chiropractic from Life University. and headaches. “It is about removing interference in the nervous system so the entire body can function better. We specialize in everything from fibromyalgia to pregnancy discomfort to pinched nerves and sciatica,” she explains. Chellis wants to educate parents on a more natural approach to ear infections, immunity, colic and other childhood ailments. “Pain is not normal!” she exclaims.
“I have practiced for over five years in Charleston, and we just celebrated our second anniversary as Chellis Chiropractic,” she states. “The goal I have for my practice is to provide my patients with a safe, gentle and natural alternative to drugs and surgery.”
24
Chellis feels she is a living example of how being treated by a chiropractor can be ben-
eficial. “I had every test and CT test come back negative for my migraines, but the answer to the problem was simple. My brother aligned two vertebras in my neck and I felt better!” Chellis says. “My history of migraines gives me an insight into helping headache patients.” But, she wants people to know that chiropractic care isn’t just back pain, neck pain

Chellis understands wanting healthy children. She is the proud mother of a three year old daughter, Kinsley, and a one year old boy, Quin. “Balancing being a business owner and a mom has been extremely difficult,” she admits. “My office is closed on Wednesdays and Friday afternoons just so I can spend time with the children while they are young. My husband is my go-to guy. He definitely helps me manage the day-to-day troubles that we encounter.” Chellis met her husband while she was in chiropractic school. “I am from Conway, SC and my husband is from Summerville. I moved to
Summerville within a few days of graduating and we were married two months later,” she says. Since arriving in Summerville she has become active in the community by becoming a member of Junior Service League of Summerville, helping raise money and volunteering for several nonprofits in the area. Ideally, Chellis says she would like to see more women business owners in Summerville. “Our town is a very family oriented community with women that embrace and support each other,” she states. “With all the growth in the area I believe there is a lot of potential for women business owners to thrive.” She is grateful for her business and the opportunity to serve and help her community. “I think I have been given a great gift,” Chellis explains. “I strive every day to give my patients the best care I can. I love to be able to treat the entire family, from pregnancy to the new born baby, I am here to meet my patient’s needs.”

Preparing for Birth: Low Country Women’s Specialists By: Amy Pittsenbarger
P
reparing for the birth of a child quite possibly tops the list for the most exhilarating, but also the most nerve-wracking, life events for a woman. Dr. Jennifer J. Heinemann and her associates at Low Country Womens’ Specialists want to help during this time. Dr. Heinemann first joined LCWS in 2008. “We offer complete gynecologic and obstetric services. We take care of women from puberty through menopause,” she explains with a laugh. Their services include “preconception counseling, management of both normal and high risk pregnancy, 3 and 4-D ultrasound, Contraceptive Options – including in-office tubal ligation, annual wellness exams, da Vinci robotic surgery, management of menstrual disorders, and menopause management.” It’s clear that they offer a wide spectrum of services, and that women of the Low Country should be aware of this! Dr. Heinemann has several pieces of advice to share for women who are trying to conceive or are currently pregnant. “Preconception visits are always beneficial. Physicians can review your medical history and help you to develop a plan for a healthy pregnancy. And, of course, anyone considering starting a family should immediately implement healthy lifestyle choices: eating a healthy diet, starting or continuing an exercise regimen, adding recommended supplements like prenatal vitamins and folic acid, and stopping smoking.”
time on what is most important medically and most important to you.” When we sat down to talk, Dr. Heinemann explained to me that many people have misconceptions about what exactly it is that she does as an OB/GYN. “Perhaps the biggest misconception
As for women who have already begun planning their childbirth process, Dr. Heinemann further explains the process that women go through when they visit the office: “At LCWS we have OB Coordinators who orient a newly pregnant patient to the practice, to her pregnancy, and to the delivery experience. During the initial visit, the coordinator answers frequently asked questions and reviews relevant pregnancy ‘dos and don’ts’. This allows physicians to focus their exam

about what I do as an OB/GYN is that I only deliver babies. While I love that part of our practice, it’s only part of the full spectrum of what we offer. A large part of our practice is GYN care, including surgery. I perform minimally invasive da Vinci robotic surgery, which is major surgery done in a minor way. Those procedures
are routinely performed as an outpatient and recovery time is a fraction of what it would have been in years past. It’s really a signicant advancement in women’s healthcare.” Dr. Heinemann also supports several charities, including Share our Suzy (an organization that assists breast cancer patients financially so they can focus their efforts on recovery). “My proudest achievement,” she explains, “is the positive impact I’ve been able to have on my patients. I pride myself on developing relationships with my patients so they feel comfortable having open, honest discussions about their health and the choices they face. Patients are more receptive to facts on difficult, and sometimes sensitive topics, when they feel their doctor is approachable…and this is true for patients at any age.” For more information on caring for your body in all its stages of life, call Low Country Women’s Specialists at (843) 797-3664 or visit them online at www.lowcountrywomen.com.

A Personal Note
W
hen I was thinking about my personal note to you some time ago, I thought about how I was going to write to you about how excited I was that Trey is headed to Furman. I was going to tell you how pleased I am that Abby is a Junior and how Colton is now (I can’t even believe it) a middle schooler. I was going to tell you about the fact Ryan has grown five inches in six months and how sweet it is that he still will let me hug him and read to him. Then something terrible happened.
It was just a regular evening. I was getting ready to go to bed when I heard an alert on my cell phone and picked up to find it was a Facebook notification from a dear high school friend. She and I had been friends for years. Angie and I went on trips together with our church youth group. We had reconnected on Facebook and I had really enjoyed watching her children grow and hearing about her life. She was always athletic and funny. She coincidentally married my second cousin. This particular night Angie was requesting prayers; her son had been in a motorcycle accident. She didn’t know the details. I stopped and prayed. Not because I knew Jacob personally, but because I had always loved his mother and because of that love, by extension, I love her children. After that prayer I went to bed. I charge my phone in my bedroom. Shortly after I laid down, it went off again. It was another childhood friend. She asked me to pray for Angie and Shannon. Jacob didn’t make it. When Trent came into the room he was scared to death to hear me crying. He didn’t know what had happened. I tried to explain my grief to him. How could I explain the very real pain I felt for this mother? As a mother of an eighteen year old son, I couldn’t help but put myself in her shoes. I didn’t weep for Jacob. I believed Jacob went straight to the arms of our heavenly father when he left his earthly body. I cried for his mom and dad. I cried for his brother, Drew and his sister, Ellie. I cried for my cousins and for Jacob’s aunts and uncles. I cried for all the hopes and dreams that Shannon and Angie had for this sweet life-loving boy who simply took a curve too fast and it cost him his life. He was wearing his helmet. He wasn’t partying or showing off. It just didn’t seem fair. July 8th is my cousin Kevin’s birthday. Now it is the day that Jacob Bullock was called home. I write this to you, my Charleston community, about a boy you probably never met for a couple of reasons. The first one is I want my friends’ son to be remembered. He was a baseball playing, four-wheel driving, fun-loving young man who was loved by everyone who knew him. He loved his family. He loved his motorcycle. His favorite scripture was on his Instagram page, “Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” His mom said, “Which is fitting, since his motto was “90 or nothing.” His visitation was so well attended mourners had to wait two hours just to speak to his parents. What a testimony to this family and their impact on the Commerce community. Another reason I share this with you is to remind you to cherish every single moment. We are not promised tomorrow. Love on your babies, and everyone else who means something to you. Be a blessing to someone. Lastly, I share this story with you to encourage my friends in Charleston, South Carolina to do what they are so well known for doing; pray for the Bullock family. Pray that God will wrap his arms around them and show them his faithfulness in a time of great sorrow. Pray they will still be able to find joy in life. Pray they will chose to live even though they may not want to at this moment in time. Sometimes in life we get wrapped up in the silliest, pettiest things. Don’t allow the little things to rob you of what is truly important. God Bless and Keep you,
Matthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
