PRIDE IN MISSION Letter from the Head of School As I reflect on our milestone 2016–17 school year, I can’t think of a more fitting theme for the Annual Report than “75 Points of Pride.” On every page—from summaries of academic achievements and innovative student opportunities to reports on financial strength and community engagement—it’s clear that our school is exceptionally strong and poised to continue to lead the way in education for years to come. In fact, I can think of many, many more ways that we can all be proud of Country Day, its students, faculty and staff, alumni, parents, and supporters. And I know everyone in our community has their own individual reason to be proud of their connection to Country Day. # A steadfast and intentional A steadfast and intentional commitment commitment to our mission to our mission and key and key values is the reason we values is the reason we have so much to have so much to celebrate as celebrate as a school community. Over the a school community. Over the course of 75 years, course of 75 years, our purpose our purpose has always been to develop the full potential of every student. has always been to develop the All Country Day graduates carry with them not just full potential of every student. the intellectual curiosity that was instilled in them by their talented teachers, but also the values of principled character, ethical leadership, and a responsibility to serve. A Country Day education is the foundation for our students to become leaders capable of bettering themselves, our community, our country, and our world. The strength of our past makes us well-positioned as we focus on our future. In June, we began the first phase of construction on a multiyear plan to create even more distinctive learning environments for our students. Moving forward on this strategic priority gives us the academic and community spaces needed to build on our already strong academic programming. The new and renovated facilities underway are a significant commitment in ensuring Country Day remains at the forefront in delivering an exceptional education for our students, both now and in the future. I am grateful and proud to be a part of a community that embraces our collective commitment to our students and our school. Our strong legacy of philanthropy has enabled Country Day to reach the 75-year mark as a leader in independent school education. Thank you to everyone who supports Country Day. Without you, our donors and volunteers, we couldn’t provide our students with the distinctive educational experiences that make them Country Day Ready for life.

PRIDE IN LEGACY Letter from the Board of Trustees Chair The more things change, the more they stay the same. I am awed by the changes our school has seen since my preschool days in 1969. As a student, I enjoyed a new learning center and theater, and I gained friends when we expanded to a second campus. My children have since benefited from larger and better athletics and fine arts facilities, new buildings at the Middle School, iPads and Surfaces, and a host of other changes. And, here we go again. The multiyear construction project now afoot will transform Country Day for generations to come. Yet, amidst these changes, Country Day has sought to stay the same. For over 75 years, Country Day’s single-minded focus has been to help families raise children who become capable, independent, responsible, and kind adults. A changing world has demanded transformation in our campuses, our program, and our faculty. At every turn, Country Day has evolved to ensure # At every turn, Country students emerge ready for the next step, and we have backed that dedication with the philanthropy and Day has evolved to stewardship necessary to deliver on our promise. ensure students emerge The results speak for themselves. Country Day excellence is rooted in generosity. In the year just ended, gifts to the Country Day Fund totaled more than $2.25 million, our endowment reached $57.5 million, and capital gifts toward strategic priorities topped $31.2 million, all record-setting figures and a testament to the value we place on investing in our children’s education. To all of those who have made Country Day a philanthropic priority, you have our gratitude. This time of transformation is exciting for the Country Day community. On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, thank you for your faith in us and your support for this great institution.

75 Days for Country Day

Last fall, we set a goal to generate 750 gifts for the Country Day Fund in 75 days. The Country Day Fund is the school’s first giving priority because the gifts enhance our programs and campus facilities, helping prepare our students for life. The generosity of parents, teachers, alumni, grandparents, and friends allowed us to exceed our goal, collecting more than 1,000 gifts in 75 days. Best of all, students, faculty, and staff helped us count down to the December 31 deadline with creative videos that we shared on social media. Thank you to everyone who supports the Country Day Fund.

Robust Academic Programming Creates Exceptional Results Lower School special area classes are special

At Country Day, special area classes are essential components of a rich academic experience. Philanthropic support allows Country Day teachers to create robust educational programming in these specific areas: •Daily PE: Children need to run, play, and MOVE in order to do their best learning, and our PE program does just that…every single day! • Fine Arts: Students get the chance to take risks, tap into their creativity, and explore a wide range of artistic pursuits: singing, dancing, playing instruments, weaving, sculpting, drawing, painting, acting, and so much more! • Science: The science program taps into student curiosity in hands-on, engaging ways, such as designing 3-D models, corresponding with astronauts in space,

building robots, and making paper from scratch. • Languages: Research shows that language learning makes children more culturally competent, more empathetic, and stronger math students. • Computer/Design & Engineering: Coding is increasingly seen as a fourth literacy, and Country Day is ahead of the curve. From coding and design/engineering to media literacy and digital citizenship, our technology team is equipping our children with the skills and mindsets to thrive in their digital worlds.

•Library: No educational experience is complete without piles and piles of wellloved books, and our librarians make it their mission to give children rich, joyful reading lives.

A Remarkable Experience In our pursuit of continuous improvement, each year the Admissions Office surveys all families who applied for admittance— whether they ultimately joined the Country Day family or not. Here are two of many comments that highlight the warm and welcoming feeling that prospective families experience at Country Day.

“Our son made the decision to attend CCDS. It was his favorite by far. He felt the teachers were the most passionate, as experienced by the classes he sat in on, and also felt the students and school community as a whole were the most welcoming.” “Most important to our family was an environment that is all about loving to learn and curiosity about the world and cultures. I could tell the education was thoughtful and challenging and the community was open and diverse.” …And that confidence in Country Day as the right choice continues long after the admissions process is over, as we often hear on social media:

“I love that Country Day has given my daughter an amazing education and educators who love what they do. It’s the best combination of rigor and love, and I wouldn’t want her to be anywhere else.” –ERICA TILLERY, parent of a fourth grader “So grateful for Country Day and all it did for my children. FINANCIAL STABILITY

I feel a lot of pride for Country Day and where we are today. One of the things I’m most proud about is that Country Day’s endowment is approximately $58 million. I’ve continued my involvement with Country Day and my support of endowment giving partly because of my parents’ long-term interest in scholarships for financial aid. I’ve seen the success and leadership of Country Day going back decades, and I’ve always wanted to be a part of that.

Recognizing Our Culture of Philanthropy

I have three children who are lifers, so we had 39 good years at Country Day. I never saw my children leave the house not wanting to get to school. During our school’s 75th anniversary, we introduced two new giving societies to celebrate the exceptional culture of philanthropy shaped by so many over time. The 1941 Society honors lifetime giving to our school and the Country Day Loyal Society recognizes those who have given consecutively for at least five years. These two special giving groups join the established Oak Society, which honors those who have made Country Day a part of their estate plans. Each of us has an important role to play, just as generations have before us, in not only sustaining Country Day, but also perpetuating its reputation as a national leader in education. It’s the people behind each gift and the story that inspired it that shape the rich texture of our philanthropic culture. Thank you for your steadfast and generous support of our students and faculty, and know that the spirit behind your gift is as precious and lasting as the gift itself.

In spring 2017, the school announced another step toward meeting Country Day’s key strategic priorities. Jim and Bev Hance pledged $2 million to create new opportunities for our next generation of leaders, thinkers, and doers in a distinctive learning environment. This significant gift from the Hances helps bring to life the collective vision shaped by our strategic plan and moves Country Day’s mission forward for our students. We are delighted to recognize the couple’s deep commitment to Country Day by naming the future Hance Lower School Learning Center. Through a strategic planning process, our community determined that a significant investment must be made to support math and science, dining, and learning centers on Cannon Campus in order to advance our students’ success, while also continuing to secure our financial

future through increased support of the endowment and the Country Day Fund. The Hance Lower School Learning Center, with an anticipated completion of August 2018, is the first step in creating separate, age-appropriate libraries/ learning centers for younger and older students. The Hance Lower School Learning Center will also be home to the Lower School Educational Resource Program, a hub for dedicated technology instruction, as well as before- and afterschool enrichment. Facility highlights include an open and airy library/media center that integrates an extensive collection of books with resources designed for modern information literacy. There will be storytelling and instruction rooms, a hands-on makers space/innovation area that engages students in age-appropriate problem solving, collaboration, and design thinking, multiple modern classrooms, and a kitchen. Margaret and Smoky Bissell Invest in the People of Country Day Endowment Giving

64

An extended standing ovation greeted Margaret and Smoky Bissell at the February Faculty and Staff meeting when Head of School Mark Reed announced that the couple had made an extraordinary $4.2 million gift to support Country Day’s key strategic priorities and further our mission. This exceptional gift, which will be directed toward the Margaret E. Gragg Endowment for Faculty Professional Development and the Bissell Faculty Salary Endowment funds, ensures Country Day is able to attract and retain a diverse and passionate faculty and staff and that our greatest assets—our teachers—are provided ample opportunities for professional growth. In her long tenure with Country Day, 17 of which she served as Head of School, Margaret championed investment in people in order to ensure we remain a leader in attracting and retaining the very best faculty and staff members for our students. As a former teacher himself and also former chair of the Board of Trustees, parent of alumni, and now grandparent, Smoky understands well the value of supporting educators who are passionate about developing the potential of every student.

The Bissells are moving Country Day’s mission forward by also ensuring that an increasingly diverse and passionate faculty and staff: • create meaningful learning experiences for each student, • are fully provided opportunities and resources for professional development, and • receive a competitive compensation package. Scott Waybright, assistant head of school, oversees curriculum and professional development for the school. He says, “The one consistent finding in educational research is that when you spend time developing teachers, you improve student learning. Margaret gave of herself professionally for many years, and now she and Smoky continue to give by

providing Country Day with the financial flexibility to develop future generations of academic leaders at Country Day.” The Bissell’s generous investment in the people that make Country Day so special further augments the cornerstone elements of an integrated plan to update Cannon Campus and position Country Day for the future. This support ensures that the previously announced gifts to construct a Dowd Student Center, Purdy Center for Science and Mathematics, and Hance Lower School Learning Center will realize their full potential for our students—because of the extraordinary educators who are preparing them for the future. This gift also propels Country Day into an elite group of independent schools nationwide, whose endowments are above the $50 million mark.

Tommy and Millie Cox Giving from the Heart Planned Giving

People support their charitable interests for many practical reasons; oftentimes to meet a specific need or to fulfill a certain goal. Then, there are the reasons people give beyond the practical. As French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal wrote, “The heart has its reasons which reason knows not.” For Millie ’66 and Tommy Cox, their reasons for supporting Country Day are a combination of both practical and heartfelt—with an emphasis on the heartfelt. “In many ways, Country Day helped shape me into the person I am today,” shared Millie. “The school is dear to me.” “We give to places we value,” added Tommy. “We value what Country Day has meant to our family.” The Coxes have a long-term relationship with Country Day: Millie is an alumna and was the director of the International Studies program for two decades; Tommy’s mother was beloved math teacher Nancy Cox; and they are the parents of Liza ’94, Miles ’96, and Dalton ’99. Though Millie has many memories of her time as a student, her most poignant is from her first-grade year. Having contracted polio at age five, Millie arrived at Country Day in a wheelchair. “I was doing a lot of complaining because my desk was not like the other students,” Millie said. “My teacher, Marilyn Mills, who was also in a wheelchair, told me the staff had built a special desk to accommodate my wheelchair and I hadn’t even said thank you. That taught me how important it is to show gratitude to those around you who are helping you shine and succeed. It’s a lesson I’ve never forgotten.”

As parents, Millie and Tommy value how caring and influential Country Day teachers and coaches were for their own children. “Miles’s experience on the wrestling team gave him skills he uses today in the business world,” said Tommy. “He had a great coach, Rick Stack, who taught him valuable life lessons.”

Giving in All Kinds of Ways Making a difference in their community and around the world is something the couple has been committed to throughout

their 47-year marriage. “We believe in giving in all kinds of ways,” Tommy said. Tommy served on both the Charlotte City Council and the Mecklenburg County Commission and coached community baseball; Millie currently chairs Country Day’s Board of Visitors and served as a former board chair of the World Affairs Council. They are counselors at Camp Blue Skies, a camp for adults with developmental disabilities; and are active in their church, Myers Park Presbyterian, where they support a girls’ school in the

The couple has ensured their continued support of the scholarship by including Country Day in their estate plans: Millie with a gift in her will and Tommy with a gift of a life insurance policy. Their heartfelt legacy will provide educational opportunities for future Country Day students.

The Oak Society recognizes those who include the school in their wills or estate plans. Their gifts help ensure the future strength of our school and enable them to strengthen Country Day beyond their lifetimes. We deeply appreciate their foresight and extraordinary generosity.

Democratic Republic of the Congo. They share a passion for bluegrass music and are in a band, Sugar Creek. Millie cherishes the memories from her years as Country Day’s director of International Studies, calling it the “highlight” of her work life. The Coxes contribute annually to the Mildred Dalton Cox Endowment for International Studies. This fund was established by Millie’s parents in her honor in 1997 and provides opportunities for Country Day students to study abroad.

Mr. Kenneth D. Miller

The Coxes recognize the impact the International Studies program can have on the entire school community, opening the campus to the world and Country Day’s students to other cultures. “I spent a year studying abroad,” Millie said. “The experience impacted the rest of my life— it made me a deeper thinker and gave me a clearer perspective of what it means to be a world citizen.” It has been especially meaningful to them when others have contributed to the fund over the years in Millie’s honor.

THE FUND New Name, Same Impact For over 75 years, the Country Day community has been dedicated to providing our students with an education that goes beyond exceptional academics to help them reach their highest potential. The Country Day Fund (formerly the Annual Fund) plays a vital role in our ability to ensure this experience for every student on campus. Renaming the Annual Fund to the “Country Day Fund” allows us to focus more on the impact these critical, operating dollars have on the core of our mission: students and faculty. We also plan to host more of an active dialogue with donors regarding what part of the Country Day experience they value most, while more intentionally reporting back to them on the difference their generosity is making. No matter the name, we are grateful to everyone who supports our top philanthropic priority!

The loyal support of this generous group of leaders is critical to giving Country Day students distinctive academic experiences. Head of School Mark Reed acknowledges members of the Selwyn Society every fall at a special reception. Mike Gallo, Charles Horton, and Trustee Stoney Sellars

Country Day is where I grew up. I would be a different person without Charlotte Country Day School and the community that surrounds it. Above anything else, this school has provided me with the lessons, values, education, life skills, role models, and friendships necessary to use and rely on out in the real world of college, jobs, and even family. I am proud of who I have become because of the value and dignity I was treated with at Country Day. –MADISON LETTS, Class of 2015

Interdisciplinary Projects Strengthen Understanding: Because mosaics are one of the great legacies of the Ancient Roman world, Middle School Latin students researched lesser known myths from Ovid’s Metamorphoses and art students captured these myths in stone. A mosaic was also created to honor the school’s anniversary, complete with the Roman numerals (LXXV) for 75 years.

Country Day is more likely to graduate tomorrow’s leaders than most schools are. That’s a hefty responsibility, and I think we have the right values and we’re on course to understand what that means. I hope Country Day, 75 years from now, is one of those great institutions that is more than just a school. It’s really a citizen in its own right.

–TODD GORELICK ’82, Chair of the Board of Trustees
